- 1998 The Whisky Jury Bellevue Single Cask 24 Year Old Cask Strength Guadeloupe Rum (700ml)GUADELOUPE$450. 00Bottle$5400.00 DozenABV: 54.4%
Other reviews... There's a wee flag with fleur-de-lis on the label, what's that, Quebec? Remember there's a Bellevue in Guadeloupe and a Bellevue on Marie-Galante, while Marie-Galante is administratively part of Guadeloupe. Did you get it all? Colour: deep gold. Nose: kerosene and olive oil, plus brake pad dust and dried mackerels, that's what I'm getting. Also black-olive focaccia. It's true that Bellevue can get pretty extreme. With water: stunning heady flowers, wisteria, jasmine, honeysuckle… Plus this feeling of having just opened the Kardashians' own family-pack of liquorice allsorts. Mouth (neat): totally grand Bellevue, full of menthol, liquorice, salt, rotting bananas, acetone and varnish. What does the people want? With water: more, much more salty liquorice, Scandinavian-style. Finish: very long, salty and full of liquorice, with some kind of smoke in the aftertaste. Juniper wood? Also blood oranges and pineapples. Comments: sure this wee Bellevue doesn't go in for subtleties, but should you be a member of the Liquorice Maniacs, you'll just need this bottle. Love it while frankly, those 24 years don't really feel. Hurray. 90 points - whiskyfun.com

Tiki Lovers Pineapple Rum (700ml)GERMANY$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 45%A new rum label created by Stephan Berg and Alexander Hauck, the founders of the highly successful brand ‘The Bitter Truth.’ This bottling has its roots in the past when Caribbean distillers would macerate fresh pineapple in high-proof sugar cane spirit, thereby adding an extra dimension of delicious fruitiness to the rum. Based on all natural pineapple extracts sourced from South America, the fruit is harvested at peak ripeness and the juice extracted by pressing. The unfermented juice is then stripped of some of its water content to create a complex pineapple extract. Making up the blend are aged & unaged Jamaican pot-still rums from Hampden Estate and Worthy Park, three year old Barbados rum from Foursquare Distillery and some young column-still rums from both Trinidad and Guyana. The blend is then infused with the pineapple extract and allowed to rest for several weeks giving the sugar cane flavours time to mingle with fruity layers of juicy pineapple, all while maintaining elements of the rum. The upshot is that this is not your usual kind of flavoured rum. It’s bold, it’s funky with loads of Caribbean personality. Tasting note: Glossy copper colour. Aromatically, an essence of pineapple pudding captured in a silky rum base. Taste wise, it's a little confected. But more husk than ripe pulp at the finish and the overall authenticity of flavour counters the sugary rush. Try it with ginger beer, in a Daiquiri or a Pineapple Sour. 45% Alc./Vol. -

Turquoise Bay Amber Rum (700ml)MAURITIUS$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 40%Mauritius is home to six distilleries and remains one of the few countries to offer both traditional and agricole style rums, dark, light and spiced, the latter usually infused with the island's abundant crops. Turquoise Bay is unusual, having been produced from molasses, however, a dash of Agricole rum is added for freshness. The final result is finished in x Cognac barrels. Tasting note: Bright polished copper colour. Sweet scents of raw sugar, molasses, caramelised peach and light cinnamon. An elegant, silky, middle-weight rum with flavours of pineapple pudding, dilute golden syrup, liquorice bullets and sweet spice. Ends nicely balanced, medium dry and deceptively long. Sleek, feminine and very appealing. 40% Alc./Vol. -

2013 Velier Beenleigh Tropical Ageing 10 Year Old Cask Strength Australian Rum (700ml)Queensland, AUSTRALIA$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 59%Alongside its official bottlings, Beenleigh has begun a collaboration with Europe's La Maison du Whisky and the acclaimed independent bottler, Velier. After two very interesting previous releases (the 2006 15 year old and the 2015 five year old), Beenleigh is following up with a 2013 Single Vintage. Made from molasses produced and processed in Queensland and fermented for 3 - 4 days, the rum was (unusually) 'reverse distilled': First in a single column and then re-distilled in a pot still, similar to those found in Guyana at Demerara Distillers Ltd. It was subsequently aged for a decade in ex-bourbon casks at the distillery in Eagleby, in Queensland's tropical climate, with an angel's share of >25%. This new reference is quite unique in putting Australian rum on the world map. Expect something powerful and spicy. Bottled in 2023, no sugar has been added. 59% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose : Fresh and expressive. Russian leather, prune kernel, grapefruit, rosewater, and sumac. Palate : Vanilla, dried apricot, kaffir lime, orange zest, cardamom, and lavender. Finish : Long and assertive. Guava, camphor, pine resin, black cherry, dark chocolate, and almond.
- 2011 Worthy Park 11 Year Old Special Cask Series Cognac Cask Jamaica Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 55%
Cognac would seem to be a complementary match for a rum's secondary maturation, hence this addition to the Special Cask Series. Distilled in the iconic Forsyths Double Retort Pot Still at the Estate in Jamaica in 2011, then tropically aged, the initial 8-year spell in ex-Bourbon wood was followed by a further 3 years in barrels that had previously contained Cognac. Eight casks make up this limited edition release, equating to 1056 bottles world-wide. 55% alc./vol.
- 2012 Worthy Park 10 Year Old Special Cask Series Calvados Cask Jamaica Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$189. 99Bottle$2279.88 DozenABV: 45%
The Special Casks Series is a collection of molasses rums distilled, aged and blended at Worthy Park aimed at exploring different secondary maturations. Distilled in 2012 in the Forsyths double retort copper still, in this example, the initial 8-years in ex-bourbon barrels followed time in barrels that had previously contained Calvados (apple brandy) for a further 2 years. Eight barrels were finally blended before bottling without chill filtration in 2022. Expect subtle apple, woody aromas and flavours in an approachable, nuanced sipping rum. 45% Alc./Vol.

Worthy Park Single Estate Reserve Jamaica Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 45%Worthy Park are one of a relatively small number of Caribbean distillers going against the grain of mass marketing and industrial scale production. Consisting of 10,000 acres in St. Catherine planted to more than twenty varietals, it's one of Jamaica's largest sugar cane plantations, yet its modern period of distilling only started in 2005. They were a sugar estate first and remain so to this day. The project started in the 1670s and initially made rum from 1741 up to 1962 when it ceased production due to market over supplies. Gifted by Oliver Cromwell to Lt. Francis Price for his service during the British capture of Jamaica from the Spanish in 1655, the Clarke family has been at the helm since 1918.Not surprisingly, a small portion of the sugar cane harvest remains dedicated to rum. The Estate utilises three different yeasts for fermentation including an isolated proprietary yeast taken from one of their sugarcane varieties. It means they're able to produce a varying number of marques, each with its own code based on ester count. Combined with a double retort all-copper pot still, Worthy Park boast control of the entire process. The result here is a blend of 100% copper pot-still rums aged from six to ten years in ex-bourbon casks. It promises another high quality all-natural addition to the ever expanding selection of Jamaican rums.
Tasting note: Deep gold. Nicely weighted aromas waver from plump and borderline buttery to estery and exotic: Expands with pineapple pudding, dried mango and banana bread. Medium sweet, succulent and oily on entry. Mid palate is candied fruit to brown sugar-like, with impressive sweet/dry balance. Finishes super pure, satiny, faintly caney / grassy / funky with warming cinnamon and nutmeg. Light molasses and raw sugar through the aftertaste. An evocative, individual, unadultered style that's a cut above your average gold rum. 45% Alc./Vol.Other reviews... It’s rum brands like these that focus on and are open about every step of the production process that made me lean toward rum. At the same time, it’s the narrative-controlling bullshit from the big whisky brands that make me lose faith and interest in the whisky scene. Raw materials don’t matter? I guess so, if you’re only after efficiency. Downplaying fermentation? Maybe, if you only want to distill as much and as fast as you can, and let the casks “fix” as many weak spots as it can, and then let marketing do the rest. I often hear aged WP being called “whisky-like'... Thus, if one wants to get into Jamaican rum but is scared of the funk, I say that this, along with Appleton, is something a person should pursue. It’s not as funky as Hampden, which is, I think, the most beloved and popular Jamaican rum right now. That said, it’s quite different from the more easily accessible light rums like Bacardi and Havana Club. - malt-review.com
Notes from the producers... A natural, light amber color; the nose is punchy with upfront aromas of light tobacco and toasted oak with spicy fruit – raisins and plums. With time light notes of vanilla become evident. On the mouth luscious and tropical fruits with a soft, buttery and almost creamy texture. Dry a slightly bitter, soft tannins are rounded out by toasted oak and nutmeg. A hint of black pepper finished off with a touch of ginger as it lingers with it’s soft, dry finish.
- 2017 Habitation Velier Mhoba South Africa Pure Single Cask Strength Rum (700ml)SOUTH AFRICA$230. 00Bottle$2760.00 DozenABV: 64.6%
Something very unusual for rum lovers here. For those new to the series, the Habitation Velier selections represent the world’s only range of Pure Single Rums (think of them as the rum equivalent of single malt whiskies) - in other words, rums from a single distillery, distilled exclusively in pot stills. Every one is a reference point for each distillery’s unique pot still. The rums are entirely aged in the tropics, ensuring a natural, accelerated maturation compared to European or 'continental' ageing. The downside is a higher angel's share.
Continueing Velier's vision is this expression from Mhoba in South Africa, the result of a partnership between Luca Gargano and Robert Greaves, the founder of Mhoba. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Onderberg district of Mpumalanga, Mhoba harvests the Nkomazi variety of sugar cane from a farm adjacent to the distillery. The cane is hand cut and pressed by an in-house mill. The cane juice (not molasses) is fermented in part by a local baking yeast as well as wild yeasts. Distillation is conducted with a pot still designed by Greaves. The particularity of this still is to favour a maximum reflux in order to develop heavy and particularly aromatic distillates.
Aged for four years in ex-bourbon casks at the distillery in the tropical environment, the share the angels take is over 22%. As usual, Velier have bottled this without reduction, at 64.6% with 246.1 gr/HLPA of esters.

83 Islands Single Blend Yumi Vanuatu Rum (750ml)$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 41.5%The very first rum from a country many Aussies are familiar with as a holiday destination – Vanuatu! ‘Yumi Rum’ means ‘Our Rum’ in the region's dialect and the brand is the brainchild of a passionate local, Pierre-Luc Chabot, who kickstarted sugar plantations on the island in order to make rum. Due to the lack of agricultural machinery, everything is done by hand, and while official organic certification is years away, the farms simply couldn’t be any more organic. What's more, the cane varieties the Efate farmers are cultivating are heirloom Vanuatuan varieties. Fresh crushed cane juice wash is run with three plates of a 500l hybrid pot/column still operation. The distillate is then matured in the Port Vila warehouse in four used bourbon barrels from four of the world’s leading producers – Peerless Distilling, Heaven Hill Distillery, Brown Foreman and Jim Beam.
Sleek, glossy, lithe and very accessible, the 83 Islands style could be compared to well-aged Lowlands grain whisky, meaning it's lighter bodied than a Jamaican or Bajan, rather closer to mainland rums from Guatemala or Venezeula. The purity of the spirit shines and it comes with some lovely touches of caramelised pineapple, dried banana and mango amongst light sugars and spices. The result is mild enough to share neat with an inexperienced friend, yet confident and complex enough to serve to seasoned rum drinkers. Note: the ABV on the front label states 40%, however the actual ABV is 41.5% Alc./Vol., as declared on the back label.
Other reviews... Nose: Sweet floral and grassy notes. Fresh cut cane billets sitting in the sun, some plump sultana notes and a very feint whiff of sweet polythene glue. Palate: A lovely delicate spirit, very little pepper, sweet fruit salad notes and very little, if any, funk at all. Some citrus peel is apparent and a nice vanilla twang is present as palate and finish overlap. Finish: Pleasant vanilla wraps around delicate fruit notes, a sprinkling of demerara sugar, some ginger-y spice and more citrus – but citrus oil in the finish. - rumtribe.com.au

Adelaide Hills Distillery Gunnery Spiced White Spirit (700ml)Adelaide Hills, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 40%The intention here was to create a spiced style 'rum' that wasn't simply driven by vanilla sweetness. Gunnery uses pot distilled spirits derived from both sugar cane and molasses, blending Australian native ingredients with traditional rum spices. Botanicals include Riverland orange and lemon aspen, Cinnamon Myrtle, Bush Tomato, Native Pepper Berry, locally Roasted Coffee Beans, Vanilla and Bush Honey. Tasting note: Clear / very pale straw blush. Warming, semi sweet aromas. Vanilla, then fruity dark chocolate (orange / fig), faint peel freshness and muted cinnamon warmth. A silky, semi sweet delivery that repeats the bouquet with a delicious cinnamon flourish. Ends vanilla-heavy, but with enough spice and vibrancy to balance. 40% Alc./Vol. - 2005 Adelphi Trinidad Distillery Single Cask 19 Year Old Cask Strength Trinidad Rum (700ml)TRINIDAD$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 58%
A single cask selection of molasses-based rum, distilled in 2005 and left to mature in a bourbon barrel resulting in lots of fruit and funk. Trinidad Distillery remains one of the largest rum distilleries in the Caribbean, yet cask strength independent bottlings are seldom encountered. 244 bottles produced at 58% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... On the nose, aromas of old rubber tires and unripe banana mix with overripe paya, guava and powerboat petrol. A lighter and brighter side shines through on the palate, with glorious powdered citrus fruit juice and oversweet lemonade, sherbet dip, Italian ice and blue raspberry softening that boozy funk from the nose.

2008 Adelphi Clarendon Single Cask 12 Year Old Cask Strength Rum (700ml)JAMAICAReduced from $240.00$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 56.8%Jamaica's Clarendon Distillery (est.1949 and initially owned by the Monymusk Sugar Factory) is a large plant, home to about 5-6 column still marques and about 20 pot still marques. Amongst these is Monymusk, named after one of the oldest sugar cane plantations in Jamaica, located in Lionel Town, Clarendon. To confuse matters, there's also a brand called 'Monymusk', but that has only been around since 2012. The historical connection remains, as Clarendon is located on six acres in the Monymusk Estate. About 90% of the total output goes to Diageo's Captain Morgan and Myers brands, which in total accounts for about 60% of all Jamaican bulk rum exports. In short, Clarendon is a hybrid set up - on the one hand churning out industrial column still distillate for global brands, while on the other creating various esoteric and highly-regarded light and heavy ester pot-distilled rums. Obviously, this selection falls into the latter category. Although Adelphi aren't giving much away, it's rumoured that this was fully matured in a refill Madeira cask. At a potent 56.8%, it promises to deliver an all-natural and truly evocative Jamaican experience. From a run of 402 bottles.
- 2000 Adelphi Hampden Single Cask 15 Year Old Cask Strength Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenABV: 54.3%Like other independent bottlers, Adelphi are branching out to aged spirits categories besides whisky.

This indie edition was bottled at 54.3% Alc./Vol. with an outturn of 346 bottles from cask JM1. Notes from Adelphi... Deep amber in hue; little beading. American oak. Banana bread, caramel toffees, with a vegetal (artichoke, linseed oil) base surrounded by tropical floral scents. The taste is sweet and fragrant, with burnt sugar, and pop-corn in the aftertaste. A drop of water increases the caramel and oiliness, with tropical fruit juice and a rummy aftertaste. -

Appleton Estate Reserve 8 Year Old Rum (1000ml)JAMAICA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 43%"Complex layers of fruit flavors with some subtle earthy funk make up this benchmark, consumer friendly Jamaican Rum." - tastings.com
Designed to be the Estate’s most versatile expression, fans of the brand will find plenty to like in Appleton's second most affordable offering. This lighter-bodied Jamaican is a combination of minimum 8 year old rums, born in copper pot stills and blended by Master Blender, Joy Spence. The result is summed up by diffordsguide.com as a "...generously dry rum, distinguished by its toasty oak tannins" and rated 4.5 stars. Enjoy it as a quality sipper or a premium mixer. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Golden amber color. Aromas and flavors of ripe banana and pineapple, roasted walnut, strawberry watermelon gastrique, and charred coconut with a round, dryish medium body and a long finish that shows notes of bananas and roasted walnut, grilled pineapple, strawberry watermelon, and mejoola date. Complex layers of fruit flavors with some subtle earthy funk make up this benchmark, consumer friendly Jamaican Rum. 93 points - tastings.com
Very sippable at 43% ABV. It’s certainly not “rough” in anyway. The initial entry is a nice burst of spice – black pepper, ginger and some warming oak and vanilla notes. Moving into the mid palate you get much more of the nose. Warming notes of cream, breakfast tea and some milky chocolate. A nice fruitiness as well with banana and some sweeter notes of green apple. Pretty much everything noted on the nose makes an appearance. The long spicy and oaked finish is wonderfully well balanced with the sweeter richer notes found in the rum. Again I’m reminding my self that this was under £30. At least trying a bottle of this is a no brainer. It’s certainly not what I would call a particularly big step down from the Rare Blend. In fact you might find this to be better or its equal. It doesn’t have some of the more “herbal” notes the Rare Blend has. This isn’t “funky” high ester hogo heavy Jamaican rum. Appleton Estate rums are a very different beast to say Hampden or National Rums of Jamaica. If you want funk from Appelton Estate than Wray and Nephew White Overproof is what you want. If you want an affordable and very nice every day sipper and a premium mixer – get this in your shopping trolley next time Tarquin takes you to Waitrose. The old Aged 8 Years is back and I think it might even be a little better than I remember. - thefatrumpirate.com
Notes from the producer... The appearance displays a dazzling topaz/honey colour with a gold rim and impeccable purity. The bouquet emits delicate scents of brown sugar and honey in the first nosing, further aeration compels the aroma to open up as it offers up biscuity scents of molasses, holiday spice and dried red fruit. The palate entry is sweet, honeyed and satiny in texture; the mid palate offers mature, composed and melted tastes of marzipan, caramel and brown sugar.

Appleton Estate Rare Cask 12 Year Old Rum (1000ml)JAMAICA$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 43%"Top notch rum here... hard to put down — and so beautiful it’s a perfect candidate for straight sipping." - drinkhacker.com
For those who may not remember, this 2015 presentation replaced Appleton 'Extra'. While little blending information is offered, the recipe is said to have remained the same. We do know that it employs both column and pot still rums aged for a minimum of 12 years and reportedly contains liquid up to 18 years old. Appleton 'Rare Casks' ranks among a handful of readily available bottlings we'd recommend to anyone breaking into serious rum connoisseurship. Leading with powerful aromas of spiced apple, lean molasses and buttered fruit toast, developing banana confectionary, rancio and nutty, grilled corn-like notes, it also boasts ideal sweet/dry balance with spicy, fruity, brown sugar flavours countered by hints of banana cake and fine astringency. There are traces of walnut fudge, oaky vanilla and understated molasses at the last. Jamaican rums are known to be overtly fruity and funky, but Appleton’s style here is much tamer, instead offering a clinic on poise in the mid-tier rum category that's almost too good to mix. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews.... The first nosing passes find tight notes of molasses and walnut; aeration time releases bigger scents of nutmeg and spiced apple. The palate entry is wonderfully warm and spicy; at midpalate the taste turns cocoa- and vanilla-like, creamy and honeyed. Concludes creamy and delicious. 98 points - wineenthusiast.com
...This is top notch rum here, and easily the best of the bunch. Refined tropical notes — banana, coconut, brown sugar, vanilla-fueled barrel char — it’s all there, right on the nose. The body takes on a fruitier character, with chocolate lacing and more of a flame-kissed/charred fruit note, giving the rum a distinctly sweet, dessert-friendly character, yet it offers a little extra oomph thanks to the slightly higher proof. This one’s hard to put down — and so beautiful it’s a perfect candidate for straight sipping. - drinkhacker.com

It's described as "light and elegant, but with an almost creamy mouthfeel" by diffordsguide.com. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Caribbean fruit such as pineapple and papaya combine with powdered sugar to give a fresh, clean nose. In the mouth there is a fair amount of weight and a touch of vanilla leading to a great, dry finish. Excellent, Highly Recommended. 91 points - 2016 Ultimate Spirits Challenge
...A decent rum for the money, especially for the price/class. Most of the rum under this price will make you feel like you went blind sometime during the night – or wished you had - this is not one of them. One of the better economy white rums. Honest, straightforward, and better than Bacardi, for less money. A solid choice for a white rum. - spiritsreview.com
"This rum is fairly alcoholic tasting and a bit hot, with some chocolatey, coffee and fruity (mostly banana and coconut) flavors trying to punch their way to the surface. Herbal and tart notes of sage, rosemary and lime zest come through with syrupy sugar flavors. It's not meant to be a neat sipper anyway, but it could certainly hold its own in a mixed cocktail or rum and Coke." 78 points - distiller.com

Appleton Estate 30 Year Old Rum (750ml)JAMAICA$799. 00Bottle$9588.00 DozenABV: 45%First launched in 2009, now is a good time to indulge in this Jamaican legend. It's only the second of its kind to be released in the distillery's 269 year history. Including liquid aged for more than 50 years, Master distiller, Joy Spence describes it as "one of my favourite rums" - a significant statement for an industry veteran of over twenty years. With a complex profile of vanilla, toasted oak, ginger, cinnamon and a smooth, long, spiced honey finish, it's guaranteed to impress serious rum aficionados. The age statement alone is staggering. Given the tropical maturation, Appleton started with 26 barrels and ended with just 13 due to the extreme evaporation rate. From those thirteen barrels just 4000 bottles have been released globally. Nothing has been added to the rum. Beautifully presented with a heavy 'decanter' style bottle and decorated stopper, we have less than a handful on offer. Other reviews... 5 Stars - diffordsguide.com ...On the nose there is orchard blossoms, golden apples stewed with maple, cinnamon, ginger, cedar and candied orange zest delicately buttressed by vanilla. The palate is much lighter than you may expect from the nosing, but the flavors are intricate iterations of the aromas— presented with flowers, oxidized fruit, dark wood tones, voluptuous baking spices and creamy caramel/vanilla. The finish clings, showing molasses, maple, soft spice and sumptuous oak nuances. 96 points - distiller.com Note: due to the long ageing, the liquid may contain some naturally occurring particles. This is not a production fault. -

While rum in general makes for a fantastic cocktail spirit, extra-old expressions like this really need to be appreciated straight. Master Blender, Joy Spence walks a tightrope with the 21 YO - the trick is adding extra layers of sensory excitement at the risk of becoming overly oaked, while at the same time, retaining some of the youthful, estery sweetness and vibrancy that's Appleton's house style. This gets the balance close to perfect. It's no wonder it was “Spirit of the Year” at the World Spirit Awards back in 2011. Just 12,000 bottles of this rare rum are produced annually, and Australia receives a special share in recognition of the growing group of consumers who have been passionately enjoying the aged blends of the Appleton Estate since the brand launched here in 2004.
Rooted in traditions that go past the American Revolution, not much has changed at Appleton since the 18th century: water is still sourced from a spring on the estate, small batch pot distillation remains the norm, done on-site using a proprietary yeast strain propagated from the estate-grown cane. The estate's versatile blends have been quietly changing the perception of rum, with homes and bars across the country embracing the rum renaissance. This bottling ups the ante to yet another level of sophistication that demands your attention, and at a price that's impossible to resist.
Tasting note: Perfectly polished copper colour dazzles in the glass. Whiffs of shellac, resin and orange zest in the opening pass, evolving aromas of hazelnut / pistachio, walnut slice, raw sugar, extra-aged muscat and cocoa. 3-4 minutes exposure accents clove, vanilla bean and draws out hints of wine-soaked pears. Outstanding. Two decades in barrel sees the sugars reigned in with spicy oak overlaying flavours of raisins, dates, light molasses; finishes drier than the mid palate stage with threads of muscat wine, rancio and all-spice woven through the aftertaste. Remarkable persistence. References to top shelf Armagnac. A very special bottling from a timeless distillery and one of the great age-statements in Jamaican Rum. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... This gorgeous copper-hued rum seems to shift flavors with every sip, encouraging contemplation. It starts with dry notes of espresso and bittersweet chocolate, then morphs into dark, mouthwatering brown sugar, toffee and clove, before easing into a spiced finish reminiscent of chai tea with a hint of white peach. 98 points - wineenthusiast.com
...The bouquet is floral, bean-like and pleasantly nutty. The palate entry is acutely astringent; the midpalate is baked nut-like with bitter tastes of oak and molasses. The aftertaste is long, desert-dry, sugary and sap-like. Not as overly woody as many old rums are; delicious in an old-guard style. 43% Alc./Vol.

Appleton Estate Rare Casks 12 Year Old Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 43%"Top notch rum here... hard to put down — and so beautiful it’s a perfect candidate for straight sipping." - drinkhacker.com

Aged between 25 and 35 years, and simply called “Joy”, it comes beautifully presented in a decanter style bottle and presentation case. The final blend is a wonderful rum that I hope will be become a cornerstone of my legacy”. Joy Spence, joined Appleton Estate in 1981 as chief chemist, having graduated from the University of the West Indies with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and the University of Loughborough with a Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry. - Appleton Estate Reserve Blend Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 40%Appleton Estate is the oldest and perhaps most famous of all of Jamaica's sugarcane estates. It is nestled in the fertile Nassau Valley on either side of the Black River in the Southwest of Jamaica. The origins of Appleton Estate date back to 1655 when the English captured Jamaica from the Spaniards. Frances Dickinson, whose grandsons Caleb and Ezekiel were the earliest known owners of the Appleton Estate, took part in that conquest of Jamaica, and it is believed that Appleton Estate was part of the land grant that Dickinson received as reward for his services. After many generations of ownership by the Dickinson family, the Appleton Estate was sold out of the family in 1845. From then on, it was owned by a procession of prominent Jamaican families, each of whom helped to increase the size and potential of the Appleton Estate by purchasing additional acreage of land planted with sugarcane. During these years, the Appleton Estate was producing several different pot still rums, and it began to gain a reputation as a reliable source for quality rum, a reputation that continues to this day. Bottlings include Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum, Coruba Jamaica Rum, Appleton Special Jamaica Rum and the prestigious portfolio of Appleton Estate Jamaica Rums: V/X, Extra and 21 Year Old. Appleton Estate Rums are still produced on the Estate, which encompasses over 11,000 acres of sugarcane as well as a sugarcane refinery and distillery. No tasting notes available.
- Appleton Estate Limited Edition 50 Year Old Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$4999. 00Bottle$59988.00 DozenABV: 45%In 1962, as Jamaica approached full independence, several hand-selected barrels of rum were set aside with the intention of creating a special blend that would one day be bottled to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence. Matured for a minimum of 50 full years, these rums have been looked after, first by Master Blender Owen Tulloch, then by his protégé and Appleton Estate’s current Master Blender, Joy Spence. Deemed as "aged to perfection" by Spence, the resulting rum is reputedly the world’s oldest barrel aged expression. (All of the rum was aged for at least 50 years, thus the age statement is absolute. It does not refer to an 'average age' or to an 'oldest component'.) More importantly, word has it that this is truly rum of historic caliber, "...with a range of flavours and overall gravity that befits its 50 years in oak, but without being too tannic". [www.cigaraficionado.com] The rum itself is a combination of pot-stilled and column-stilled rums, though the exact percentage of each in the final blend is not disclosed. The barrels were all x-Bourbon, originally shipped as staves and reassembled by coopers at Appleton Estate. Thirteen barrels made it through the process, each chained to the warehouse floor for added security and evaluated twice a year by Spence. Given the high evaporation rates, the combined contents yielded a mere 800 bottles. The rum was filled into crystal decanters produced by Glencairn Crystal of the United Kingdom and designed after the curvaceous shape of other Appleton vessels. The brass and cork stopper is finished in gold, and gold screen printing on the bottle reflects a host of national symbols of Jamaica. To round things off, the rum is presented in a black lacquered gift box with gold-finished brass hinges. It contains a commemorative booklet that outlines Jamaica’s march to Independence and the journey of this astonishing rum. No tasting notes available.
- Bacardi Gran Reserva Diez 10 Year Old Rum (1000ml)PUERTO RICO$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 40%
Based on the Maestro de Ron's Reserve and launched in 2017, Bacardi's latest high-end rum is aged for at least 10 years in American white oak and filtered through charcoal for a smooth finish. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... What we have here is a completely fine Bacardi rum, competently made, nicely aged, a decent Latin-style hooch, light, easy drinking, with some taste chops to write home about – even the slightly added dosage doesn’t detract from that, though I think it’s unnecessary, really. Any surprise would be if it wasn’t all those things, and it is indeed a ways above the made-for-the-mixing-proletariat Superior and Gold and Anejo that sell by the tanker load and keep Bacardi’s sales numbers flying high. On top of that, the Diez is demonstrably better than the 4YO “Cuatro”, addressing many of that young premium’s weaknesses: it is more complex, has more going on and seems more suited for the sipper’s glass. What it doesn’t do is eclipse the solidity of the 8YO “Ocho” which also ticks many of the same boxes; moreover, the Diez seems content to go down the familiar path of “same but incrementally better,” and is hardly a serious upgrade from any of its junior brethren. The makers seem to have had no inclination to find new worlds to explore or new profiles to demonstrate, that would show some innovation, a willingness to go off the reservation, if only a little. I find that disappointing. There are enough standard-strength, standard-profiled, standard-priced rums in Bacardi’s stable, and in anyone’s corner shop. If you’re one of the biggest kids on the block, with over a century of experience behind you, you can surely do better than repeat the same old shtick with a new number. 80 points - thelonecaner.com
...For a very long time first thing that appeared in my mind when hearing "Bacardi" was their basic line of mass rum production, meant to be mixed in every pub all around the world. However, at some point I decided to give a chance to something more complex from this brand, and here I am - my meeting with 10 yo Bacardi can be described as fully enjoyable and - as stated in the title - this product is a decent aged rum. Slight alcohol burn at the end made my score to be one point less in comparison to other spirits of similar age, nevertheless I would recommend Gran Rezerva Diez 10 yo to anyone interested in exploring the Bacardi brand. Give it a go - you will be positively surprised. - rumratings.com

Other reviews... Rich copper color. Sweet toffee, roasted nuts, and brown spice aromas are very sophisticated and deep. A vibrant entry leads to a supple, glycerous and lightly sweet full-bodied palate of chocolate, warm caramel, toasted nuts, and rich spices with a touch of cigar box and lacquer for complexity. Finishes with a long, smoky caramel and spice fade. Fantastic and a must for cigars.

First produced in 1862, re-launched around 2015 and named after the Spanish word for Gold, Bacardi Oro is the premium blend from the Bacardi stable based in Peurto Rico. Fourteen young rums make up the mix which is aged for just one to two years adding subtle notes of toffee and muscovado sugar. Filtered once through charcoal for smoothness, expect a lighter, drier style made for mixing.
Other reviews... The Carta Oro despite all of Bacardi’s marketing gimmicks is not a very sophisticated or complex spirit. If you want a strong hit of alcohol in a glass then reach for the Carta Oro. Bacardi is targeting the 'shot market' with this edition launched in April 2015. It has been matured in oak for one year before being blended, charcoal filtered and mixed with various herbs and spices. The producers recommend adding a dash of pepper sauce or serving with cola.Tasting note: Named for the Spanish word for "fire". Confected aromas, redolent of caramel nib milk chocolate. Syrupy, broad, fat and relatively short with the palate repeating the aroma. Virtually zero spices detectable, with the exception of vanilla and a meek pepper / baklava / cinnamon surge at the finish. Liqueur-like and one dimensional. 40% Alc./Vol.

The Bacardi Bat Device...
The Bacardi Bat Device appears on every label of every product carrying the Bacardi family name. According to Family lore, it originated in 1862 when Don Facundo’s wife, Dona Amalia Lucía Victoria Moreau, suggested employing the Bat as the trademark for their new rum. Upon entering the first Bacardi distillery, Amalia noticed a colony of fruit bats living in the rafters. Bats had great significance in Dona Amalia’s world. As a lover of the arts, she knew that Cuba’s extinct native people, the Taínos, regarded bats as possessors of all cultural goods. And she knew from local lore that bats were popularly thought to bring good health, fortune and family unity. Her suggestion also was hardheaded and pragmatic. Because of the high rate of illiteracy in the 19th century, a product needed a memorable graphic logo -- a trademark -- to become identifiable and sell. Reports quickly flew across Cuba of Don Facundo’s choice new charcoal-mellowed rums: the carefully aged, rich, dark sipping rums and a miraculous new light rum that was smooth, civilized and astonishingly drinkable. But the bat mythology also helped. Word of Don Facundo’s Bat spread side-by-side with word of his smooth rums. The Bat, local storytellers attested, brought good fortune and added magical powers to his rum. Today, the Bacardi Bat is a welcome character in more than 170 countries around the world where Bacardi rum is enjoyed. Clearly, Don Facundo’s exclusive formula, proprietary charcoal-mellowing, and aging processes give Bacardi rum its superior quality and premium smoothness. But with the Bat as the trademark, the rums have continued to raise the Company’s fortunes to new heights!Classic Cocktail: The Daiquiri Strawberry
The Daiquiri is a family of cocktails whose main ingredients have traditionally been rum and lime juice. There are several versions however, with some like the Strawberry Daiquiri having a texture similar to a smoothie. Originally the drink was served in a tall glass packed with cracked ice. A teaspoon of sugar was poured over the ice and the juice of one or two limes was squeezed over the sugar. Two or three ounces of rum completed the mixture. The glass was then frosted by stirring with a long-handled spoon.40 ml White Rum

Balcones Cask Strength Texas Rum (750ml) - 58.5%Waco, Texas, UNITED STATES$160. 00Bottle$1920.00 DozenABV: 58.5%Balcones are better known for their sizeable single malts. Few are aware that they diversified into rum back in 2013. It's taken a while to get the formula right, but this is getting closer. Initially dense, woody and closed, the aroma needs time to pick up steam, developing with notes of dried mango, molasses cake, cinnamon and ginger bread. Bristling wood spices and nipping alcohol come with the territory, however classic Demerara flavours like fruit cake, cinnamon, bitter dark chocolate and dry molasses only gain definition at the last. While it shows impressive staying power, overall, this remains an understated, unadulterated style that could be mistaken for a rum-finished version of their single malt (perhaps they've matured this in x-single malt casks?) For that reason it should entertain malt whisky drinkers and rum enthusiasts in equal measure. 58.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered

The casks used for BCS release #1 rum were on an Atlantic voyage that spanned almost a year before they reached Kentucky. Rather than issuing them as single barrels, experiments with countless combinations came up with this outstanding blend of vintage rums from Barbados, Jamaica and Guyana. It looks to be a real gem from BCS. The bad news is, we have next to nothing from an outturn of 483 bottles. 62.1% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Strong notes reminiscent of tepache, a Mexican fermented beverage made from pineapple rinds. Others emerge - fruity notes of green grapes and lime hull, earthy notes of oyster shell and potting soil, and very Jamaican vegetal notes of Kalamata olive, caper, pine needle tea, scallion, and pollen. Palate: Comparatively gentle, the Guyanese lending demerara syrup, purple plum, and crème de cassis, the Barbados bringing characteristic florals and spice: rosehip tea, cinnamon, and star anise. These notes are held together by a fresh maritime character -- seaweed, sea salt, and a little glycerine richness. Finish: The Jamaican hogo is back, as is the tepache, but it’s also spicy, with notes of ginger, turmeric, and catnip. Lychee makes an unexpected appearance.

Patience and a splash of water reward the drinker with boundless entertainment: innumerable tropical fruits, maritime minerals and heady florals. Extremely limited stocks. 64.7% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: The esters are so concentrated and varied that the aroma presents first with the unmistakable monolithic smell of funky Jamaican rum. Slowly, the Barbados and Demerara rums drive a wedge into the funk and focus the profile first around berries and flowers. There’s a fatty element at times reminiscent of tahini or browned butter. A kiss of wood spice, sauna and nutmeg is present. Palate: The alcohol keeps the sweetness in check, the tannins are modest and sandy. Tthe flavors mirror the nose: Blackberry, rosehip, nutmeg, tahini. The mineral side really shines and gives a maritime feel: crushed oyster shell, kelp, fried clams, dry vermouth. Finish: The tropical fruits pop, with lime zest, lychee, navel orange, and pineapple. Some soft resinous touches of mastic and pine pitch. A hint of savory enoki mushroom and sweet crab meat.

Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to.
