    Rusty Barrel Gold Rum (700ml)
    Caribbean,
    $84. 99
    Bottle
    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

An aged fusion of 5 & 8-year-old Caribbean gold rums developed in collaboration with an international Master Distiller. The slightly cliched packaging anticipates an entry-level rum, but it's a high-quality blend with the elegance of Nicaraguan benchmarks (think Flor de Cana). Ripe fruit cake and caney notes check the creeping sugars, making the finish almost refreshing. Impressive weight and flavour at just 40% results in a classy standalone sipper that retains much of its character when mixed.

Notes from the producers... Smooth vanilla & oak aromas as well as raisins and floral notes with a delicately sweet honeycomb and butter biscuit palate. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Sagatiba Pura Cachaça (Cachaca) (700ml)
    Minas Gerais, BRAZIL
    $72. 99
    Bottle
    $875.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%

Chacaça is a spirit derived from the juice of sugar cane and is the basis of the Caipirinha (pronounced Kaay-peer-REEN-ya), which became one of the world's most popular cocktails towards the end of the millennium leading to a world Cachaça shortage. The spirit has been in demand in Australia for some time and many bars are now experimenting with its light, clean and versatile flavour. Sagatiba's Pura is a benchmark for the genre.
Tasting note: Clear, burnished silver appearance. Powerful scents include white pepper, green capsicum and dill. Medium dry, the palate bursts with mustard seed, white pepper and green capsicum flavours. Slightly oily mouthfeel. Spice and green capsicum persist into the long aftertaste. Finishes clean and dry with a spicy, minerally tingle. Reminiscent of a class Blanco Tequila. 38% Alc./vol.

Other reviews... Clear. Vibrant baked banana, mineral, toasty meringue, and exotic peppery spice aromas. A round, smooth entry leads to a silky, dryish medium body of powdered sugar, banana puree, banana leaf, coconut milk, mineral ore, and white pepper flavors. Finishes with a smooth, lightly sweet and spicy, mineral oil accented fade. Very soft and sensuous. This is clean and versatile enough for almost any cocktail application and retains the distinctive mineral character of a very fine cachaça. 38% Alc./Vol. International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal 93 points (Exceptional) - tastings.com

Like any classic cocktail, the Caipirinha (roughly translated as 'little peasant girl') has a traditional method of mixing which requires a certain attention to detail. Cut a lime into eight pieces, place in a glass, add 1-2 tea spoons of granulated cane sugar to taste. The proportion of sugar can vary but its sweetness should balance the acidity of the limes.
A wooden muddler can be used to grind the sugar and lime in order to release the oils in the skin as well as the juice in the flesh of the limes. Fill the glass with crushed ice. Add 30-60ml of Cachaca, stir and it’s ready!
In recent years, some bartenders have developed the humble Caipirinha by adding fresh fruit such as blackberries during the muddling (crushing) stage to create new flavours, thus creating for example a 'Black berry Caipirinha.' Cachaça also lends a certain Brazilian exoticism to other drinks such as cola and orange juice.

Sailor Jerry Spiced Caribbean Rum (700ml)
Virgin Islands, UNITED STATES MINOR OUTLYING ISLANDS
    $61. 99
    Bottle
    $743.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

‘Spiced’ is the generic name given to any rum to which a local herb or spice has been added and allowed to impart its particular flavour. Most commonly cinnamon, rosemary, aniseed and peppers are used. It's an acquired taste, however the best examples are deliciously different. Sailor Jerry is blended with Vanilla and Lime, and makes the claim "Strong, but goes down smooth"

Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum is a rum produced by Sailor Jerry Ltd. as a tribute to both the man, Norman 'Sailor Jerry' Collins and the style of Rum 'Jerry' concocted and consumed whilst serving in the US Navy. Collins lived quite an extraordinary life, heavily influenced by artwork he saw whilst sailing in the Navy, he turned his hand to tattoo artistry, thanks to his Eastern influences and strong bonds forged with Japanese tattoo masters - the same masters that were responsible for the training and development of artists to carry on Japan's ancient tattoo tradition. Jerry is regarded as the foremost American tattoo artist of his time, his influences are still prevalent, despite his passing in 1973. Lovers of ink, raise a glass to Jerry! 40.0% Alc./Vol.

Saint James Rhum Blanc Agricole Martinique Rum (700ml)
    MARTINIQUE
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A fresh and tangy entry-level agricole from Martinique, bottled at an accessible 40% ABV for the bartender's circuit. Good to start your adventure into the agricole category or use it to make delicious Mojitos and Mai Tais.

Other reviews... I’ve tried quite a few of these whites from the company, and the thing is, what impresses about the Imperial is its cost benefit ratio — it tastes well and noses even better for the first and cheapest rhum in that lineup. The profile is reasonably good, isn’t strong enough to offend or frighten, and provides most of what is required of a low-level intro to unaged agricoles.  I wouldn’t go so far as to say it makes a great Ti’ punch – you need to go to 50º for that to happen, and Clement and Damoiseau provide stiff competition as well – but its very good at providing a flavourful jolt to whatever you feel like adding it to, even at standard strength.  So while I wouldn’t say it’s a key rum of any kind, it certainly is tailor made for bars, and for anyone of lean purse who wants to start working on his knowledge of the blanc side. - thelonecaner.com

    Saison Gold Rum (700ml)
    Caribbean,
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.5%

Blended and finished at the Tessendier Cognac House in France, Saison's slightly older 'Gold' edition sees multi-cask aging in x-bourbon and French oak making for a versatile, lighter bodied Caribbean style that's not overly aggressive. Suitable for beginners and mixoligists. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

    Saison Pale Rum (700ml)
    Caribbean,
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

'Saison Pale' marries molasses-based rums and column-distilled sugarcane-based distillates from Barbados, Trinidad and Jamaica. The components are blended by Cognac expert, Jerome Tessendier in France. There, the rum is allowed to round off for three months in French oak barrels, adding a smooth hint of oak to the floral, fruity, and elegantly spicy spirit before bottling without added sugar. The result is a light tropical style with a little French-finesse. Enjoyable neat, though perhaps intended less as a sipper, more of a mixer that will add vibrancy to cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

"Top pick for tiki and tropical drinks, this practically begs for lime juice. " - wineenthusiast.com

A mix of heavy Wedderburn and medium bodied Plummer pot-still distillates, aged for up to 3 years and bottled at a potent strength. The Smith & Cross brand is steeped in tradition, both in terms of history and character. The name goes back to 1788, referencing an English trading company that was importing vast quantities of rum and sugar from Jamaica to the UK. The rum itself is described as "old fashioned", pre-dating the trend for sweetened styles that's so prevalent today. Hampden Estate's stills are famous for delivering funky notes like caramelised banana, tropical fruit and a complexing earthiness. Their rums are typically absent of chill filtration, excess dilution or added sugar. Hence, this is what you might call 'old-school' rum. It's exotic flavour profile and punchy strength have made it a bartender's favourite for Tiki cocktails, but you can also showcase its high esters in a classic Daiquiri or Mai Tai. The Kingston Negroni is a contemporary alternative, where Smith & Cross' baking spice notes mingle with red vermouth, while the rum's sweet molasses is balanced by the gentian-forward red bitters. In a similar vein, stir Cocchi Vermouth di Torino with Smith & Cross, a little maraschino and orange bitters and you have a Martinez with a genuine reggae beat!

Other reviews... A top pick for tiki and tropical drinks, this practically begs for lime juice. Scented with warm honey notes, the palate shows lots of brown sugar and spice, plus an enticingly untamed, funky finish (the fabled hogo). Since it’s “navy strength,” you might not want to sip it straight up—the producer wisely recommends exploring the profile first in a daiquiri—though it’s smooth and interesting enough if you want to try. - 95 points - wineenthusiast.com

...Smith & Cross is definitely not the sweeter newer style of rum which have been more prevalent since the 50’s and 60’s.  It is no Ron Zacapa or Diplomatico. It is a million miles away from that.  It is in many ways like Ronseal – it does exactly what it say on the tin (bottle).  Smith & Cross make no allusions or false claims about their product. As a rum to recommend it's a difficult one you either like dunder heavy Jamaican rum or you don’t!  I’ve had around 100ml of the stuff during this review and I can certainly feel it!  The ABV obviously attributes to this! This is a good rum – well made and constructed and has no pretences about being anything other than an old fashioned hard hitting Jamaican pot still. It might well go great with a bit Ting – jammin! 4 Stars - thefatrumpirate.com

    $767.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.5%

New Zealand’s newest rum company, 'Stolen Rum' has been honored with a Double Gold medal for its Gold variant and a bronze medal for its White rum at the prestigious 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Born in the Caribbean and raised in New Zealand, Stolen Rum was created after Kiwis Jamie Duff and Roger Holmes, caught in the rum resurgence that was taking place worldwide, ditched their day jobs in favour of developing a world class rum. “Stolen Rum had only been in the market for three weeks when we entered the competition. We couldn’t have hoped for a better start.” Produced from a molasses ferment and a continuous distillation, maturation follows in Trinidad, the southernmost island of the Caribbean. It matures for a minimum of four years in individually chosen charred American oak bourbon barrels.

Tasting note: Bright brass / copper appearance. The aroma offers nice depth with suggestions of brown sugar and golden syrup, toffee apple and nougat. A light, soft entry leads into a medium bodied mocha and caramel mid palate supported by very gentle spices. Concludes with good persistence. Creme caramel aftertaste dovetails off into a lovely lean, dry fade. 40% Alc./Vol

Other reviews... A buttery nose with apple notes and cinnamon spice aromas leads to an equally buttery palate, with notes of butterscotch and toffee apple. Slight bitter, oily astringency, especially apparent in the finish which borrows toffee apple notes from the palate. 40% Alc./Vol. 4 STARS **** – Simon Difford, CLASS Magazine 2010

The results are carefully blended by hand before being carbon filtered to remove any colour.

Tasting notes: Clear slightly viscous appearance. Offers a strong bouquet combining opening scents of molasses and spice (white pepper and vanilla), before turning more ripe fruit like - specifically very ripe cantaloupe or grapes. A super soft entry accumulates depth as a slow spice wave unfolds delivering excellent length. Medium bodied, semi sweet and mildly fruity-meringue like mid palate. Concludes clean, dry, vibrant and grassy with warming spices persisting. Subtle cocoa fade. Nicely done. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

    Stroh 60 Rum (500ml)
    AUSTRIA
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 60%

The lower proof Stroh weighs in at a hefty 60% alc/vol and is distilled from herbs and fruit, as opposed to sugar cane so it will come as something of a novelty for the rum connoisseur. It is perhaps more indispensable in the kitchen than the bar, particularly when it comes to the creation of Austrian sweets, although it has its place in fruit bowls and hot drinks such as warming Jagertee, Punch and Grog.

    Stroh 80 Rum (500ml)
    AUSTRIA
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 80%

Austrian rum is hard to come by in Australia. This one from Stroh weighs in at a hefty 80% alc/vol and is limited to 500ml bottles. Stroh is unusual in that is distilled from herbs and fruit, as opposed to sugar cane and will come as something of a novelty for the rum connoisseur or may be equally appreciated as a cough soother. The unmistakable aroma of Stroh makes it indispensable for the creation of typical Austrian sweet dishes.

Tasting note: Deep sienna brown / old copper colour. Penetrating aroma opens with notes of caramelised onion and burnt herbs. Aeration draws out a sweet core of over-cooked fruits while the spirit prickles the nostrils. The palate is bitter and tannic on entry before an achingly intense, prickly and hot, bitter-sweet attack; hints of toasted almond and fruit cake are followed by a touch of rubber band on the finish. The tongue piercing spice and spirit heat continues to flame the mouth well into the aftertaste, turning bone dry as the fruit cake flavours fade. Lip numbing, and just way too much spirit heat to make this enjoyable straight. 80% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Unusual brick orange and metallic copper hue. Caramel and sweet buttered nut aromas with a whiff of sharp alcohol. A tannic, hot entry leads to a fiery off-dry full-bodied palate with roasted nut, treacle, and intense spices. Finishes with a mouth numbing wash of heat, rubber and cardboard flavors. Addition of water tames the heat and mutes, rather than enhances, the flavors. Too manipulated. 80% alc/vol.

Edition No.13 was matured for eight years in the tropics before bottling in 2022 all-natural at 61.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 228 bottles.

Other reviews... “Nose: less sweet than the other cask, more narrow as well. There are some dry wood shavings and leather. Spiced notes and a hint of polished metal. Again there is a whisky-like side. Mouth: meh. This seems narrow, rather woody and spirity. I’m getting a lighter style of spirit, overtaken by some alcohol burn, oak spice and liquorice. Cloves and mentholated freshness. Finish: long and drying, on oak spice. Some heat and pepper.” - whiskynotes.be

The Kraken Black Spiced Rum (700ml)
    Indiana, UNITED STATES
    $74. 99
    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A blend of Caribbean rums that should appeal to fans of rich, navy-style rum. Many years ago, in the Caribbean Islands, a ship carrying a large quantity of black spiced rum mysteriously disappeared. It is rumored that the ship was attacked by the Kraken, a legendary sea monster known for its deadly tentacles, razor sharp teeth, and insatiable appetite. Even though this story can't be proven, the stories still remain, along with a respectful fear of the sea. The lost barrels of rum were renamed after the Kraken, to both honour and appease him.

Tasting note: 47% ABV is standard for this elsewhere, however the Australian import is a lighter bottling. Pours sienna brown with copper edges and offers aromas of chico lollies, creamy soda, subdued vanilla and caramel with the spices otherwise indiscernible. Medium weighted and broad in the mouth with moderate sweetness including flavours of chico lollies, dilute maple syrup and creamy soda. Pleasant spicy warmth to finish. Not overtly spiced in the traditional sense. It would be more compelling at a higher proof. Easy drinking. 40% Alc./Vol.

    ABV: 40%
Mauritius is home to six distilleries and remains one of the few countries to offer both traditional and agricole style rums, dark, light and spiced, the latter usually infused with the island's abundant crops. Turquoise Bay is unusual, having been produced from molasses, however, a dash of Agricole rum is added for freshness. The final result is finished in x Cognac barrels.

Tasting note: Bright polished copper colour. Sweet scents of raw sugar, molasses, caramelised peach and light cinnamon. An elegant, silky, middle-weight rum with flavours of pineapple pudding, dilute golden syrup, liquorice bullets and sweet spice. Ends nicely balanced, medium dry and deceptively long. Sleek, feminine and very appealing. 40% Alc./Vol.
2013 Velier Beenleigh Tropical Ageing 10 Year Old Cask Strength Australian Rum (700ml)
    Queensland, AUSTRALIA
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 59%

Alongside its official bottlings, Beenleigh has begun a collaboration with Europe's La Maison du Whisky and the acclaimed independent bottler, Velier. After two very interesting previous releases (the 2006 15 year old and the 2015 five year old), Beenleigh is following up with a 2013 Single Vintage. Made from molasses produced and processed in Queensland and fermented for 3 - 4 days, the rum was (unusually) 'reverse distilled': First in a single column and then re-distilled in a pot still, similar to those found in Guyana at Demerara Distillers Ltd. It was subsequently aged for a decade in ex-bourbon casks at the distillery in Eagleby, in Queensland's tropical climate, with an angel's share of >25%. This new reference is quite unique in putting Australian rum on the world map. Expect something powerful and spicy. Bottled in 2023, no sugar has been added. 59% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose : Fresh and expressive. Russian leather, prune kernel, grapefruit, rosewater, and sumac. Palate : Vanilla, dried apricot, kaffir lime, orange zest, cardamom, and lavender. Finish : Long and assertive. Guava, camphor, pine resin, black cherry, dark chocolate, and almond.

    ABV: 57.1%

Diamond is the only remaining rum distillery in Guyana, so this is from the same operation that makes the fabulous El Dorado range (amongst others). The barrel in question spent five years ageing in the tropics followed by seven years on the continent. We'd hazard to guess that the mix is majority pot still rums. Overripe tropical fruits melt into milk chocolate, liquorice bullets and molasses cake with grassy, caney notes adding appropriate freshness to the finish. Allow five minutes of air contact and this keeps on giving. The fact that it's unsweetened and carries high alcohol so effortlessly makes this seductive, integrated and perfectly balanced expression an epitome of elegance in the Guyanese category. 264 bottles from an x-whisky barrel. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Thick and oily with aniseed, cloves, peppermint and green olives.

Cognac would seem to be a complementary match for a rum's secondary maturation, hence this addition to the Special Cask Series. Distilled in the iconic Forsyths Double Retort Pot Still at the Estate in Jamaica in 2011, then tropically aged, the initial 8-year spell in ex-Bourbon wood was followed by a further 3 years in barrels that had previously contained Cognac. Eight casks make up this limited edition release, equating to 1056 bottles world-wide. 55% alc./vol.

    JAMAICA
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
Worthy Park are one of a relatively small number of Caribbean distillers going against the grain of mass marketing and industrial scale production. Consisting of 10,000 acres in St. Catherine planted to more than twenty varietals, it's one of Jamaica's largest sugar cane plantations, yet its modern period of distilling only started in 2005. They were a sugar estate first and remain so to this day. The project started in the 1670s and initially made rum from 1741 up to 1962 when it ceased production due to market over supplies. Gifted by Oliver Cromwell to Lt. Francis Price for his service during the British capture of Jamaica from the Spanish in 1655, the Clarke family has been at the helm since 1918.

Not surprisingly, a small portion of the sugar cane harvest remains dedicated to rum. The Estate utilises three different yeasts for fermentation including an isolated proprietary yeast taken from one of their sugarcane varieties. It means they're able to produce a varying number of marques, each with its own code based on ester count. Combined with a double retort all-copper pot still, Worthy Park boast control of the entire process. The result here is a blend of 100% copper pot-still rums aged from six to ten years in ex-bourbon casks. It promises another high quality all-natural addition to the ever expanding selection of Jamaican rums.

Tasting note: Deep gold. Nicely weighted aromas waver from plump and borderline buttery to estery and exotic: Expands with pineapple pudding, dried mango and banana bread. Medium sweet, succulent and oily on entry. Mid palate is candied fruit to brown sugar-like, with impressive sweet/dry balance. Finishes super pure, satiny, faintly caney / grassy / funky with warming cinnamon and nutmeg. Light molasses and raw sugar through the aftertaste. An evocative, individual, unadultered style that's a cut above your average gold rum. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... It’s rum brands like these that focus on and are open about every step of the production process that made me lean toward rum. At the same time, it’s the narrative-controlling bullshit from the big whisky brands that make me lose faith and interest in the whisky scene. Raw materials don’t matter? I guess so, if you’re only after efficiency. Downplaying fermentation? Maybe, if you only want to distill as much and as fast as you can, and let the casks “fix” as many weak spots as it can, and then let marketing do the rest. I often hear aged WP being called “whisky-like'... Thus, if one wants to get into Jamaican rum but is scared of the funk, I say that this, along with Appleton, is something a person should pursue. It’s not as funky as Hampden, which is, I think, the most beloved and popular Jamaican rum right now. That said, it’s quite different from the more easily accessible light rums like Bacardi and Havana Club. - malt-review.com

Notes from the producers... A natural, light amber color; the nose is punchy with upfront aromas of light tobacco and toasted oak with spicy fruit – raisins and plums. With time light notes of vanilla become evident. On the mouth luscious and tropical fruits with a soft, buttery and almost creamy texture. Dry a slightly bitter, soft tannins are rounded out by toasted oak and nutmeg. A hint of black pepper finished off with a touch of ginger as it lingers with it’s soft, dry finish.

"made by one company that remembers its roots and continues to distil a real rum." - thelonecaner.com

Ask a native where you could sample J.Wray & Nephew over-proof rum, and they will tell you knock on the door of any household. Such is the legendary status of this spirit that it accounts for 90% of rum sales in Jamaica. Other brands produced under the J.Wray & Nephew name are Captain Morgan, Coruba and the renowned Appleton Estate range. Use this product in classic rum punches with tropical juices. Alternate with flavoured rums and liqueurs for something new. Also great in the traditional Mai Tai and Daiquiri.

Other reviews... This is the flagship rum from Wray and the rum ... familiar instantly on the nose, with a mixture of citrus and petrol notes, very aromatic with florals and the raw alcoholic notes one expects from an overproof rum. The body is a bit tougher and astringent, slightly charcoal-dusted but otherwise intense with fruit, both citrus and tropical, with overtones of overripe banana, bubble gum, and a touch of eucalyptus on the finish. Surprisingly approachable despite the heavy alcohol level. - drinkhacker.com

...I’m not a huge white rum lover but this is as good as I have had.  It will give a massive kick to tiki style cocktails, where it is very often used.  W&N Overproof is very popular and highly regarded amongst bartenders and mixologists. Rightly so as well. The danger in this drink maybe that at 63% its very drinkable.  At the price it is also very good value.  W&N Overproof needs to be evaluated on what it is.  It is a very good white overproof mixer.  It’s availability and price makes it a no-brainer to have on hand. 4/5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

...I have gained a sort of sneaking appreciation for overproofs, including this one, because while it lacks the subtlety of a more refined 40% variation (subtlety? don’t make me laugh…the thing is like a charging brontosaurus on steroids at rutting time), it makes an intense, strong, powerfully tasting mix with whatever you decide to chase it. Try adding cola to a 40% low-ender and then to the White Overproof and try and tell me this one doesn’t have more character, more taste, more…well, cojones. It absolutely is not afraid to charge the gates and get the hell off the reservation.  When you drink J. Wray’s clear hooch, reader, there’s no ifs, ands or buts — you know Elvis has left the building; and didn’t just exit, he took off with rocket-powered, turbo-charged steel-toed boots. And a jet pack.... made by one company that remembers its roots and continues to distil a real rum. - thelonecaner.com

2017 Habitation Velier Mhoba South Africa Pure Single Cask Strength Rum (700ml)
    SOUTH AFRICA
    $230. 00
    Bottle
    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 64.6%

Something very unusual for rum lovers here. For those new to the series, the Habitation Velier selections represent the world’s only range of Pure Single Rums (think of them as the rum equivalent of single malt whiskies) - in other words, rums from a single distillery, distilled exclusively in pot stills. Every one is a reference point for each distillery’s unique pot still. The rums are entirely aged in the tropics, ensuring a natural, accelerated maturation compared to European or 'continental' ageing. The downside is a higher angel's share.

Continueing Velier's vision is this expression from Mhoba in South Africa, the result of a partnership between Luca Gargano and Robert Greaves, the founder of Mhoba. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Onderberg district of Mpumalanga, Mhoba harvests the Nkomazi variety of sugar cane from a farm adjacent to the distillery. The cane is hand cut and pressed by an in-house mill. The cane juice (not molasses) is fermented in part by a local baking yeast as well as wild yeasts. Distillation is conducted with a pot still designed by Greaves. The particularity of this still is to favour a maximum reflux in order to develop heavy and particularly aromatic distillates.

Aged for four years in ex-bourbon casks at the distillery in the tropical environment, the share the angels take is over 22%. As usual, Velier have bottled this without reduction, at 64.6% with 246.1 gr/HLPA of esters.

83 Islands Single Blend Yumi Vanuatu Rum (750ml)
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41.5%

The very first rum from a country many Aussies are familiar with as a holiday destination – Vanuatu! ‘Yumi Rum’ means ‘Our Rum’ in the region's dialect and the brand is the brainchild of a passionate local, Pierre-Luc Chabot, who kickstarted sugar plantations on the island in order to make rum. Due to the lack of agricultural machinery, everything is done by hand, and while official organic certification is years away, the farms simply couldn’t be any more organic. What's more, the cane varieties the Efate farmers are cultivating are heirloom Vanuatuan varieties. Fresh crushed cane juice wash is run with three plates of a 500l hybrid pot/column still operation. The distillate is then matured in the Port Vila warehouse in four used bourbon barrels from four of the world’s leading producers – Peerless Distilling, Heaven Hill Distillery, Brown Foreman and Jim Beam.

Sleek, glossy, lithe and very accessible, the 83 Islands style could be compared to well-aged Lowlands grain whisky, meaning it's lighter bodied than a Jamaican or Bajan, rather closer to mainland rums from Guatemala or Venezeula. The purity of the spirit shines and it comes with some lovely touches of caramelised pineapple, dried banana and mango amongst light sugars and spices. The result is mild enough to share neat with an inexperienced friend, yet confident and complex enough to serve to seasoned rum drinkers. Note: the ABV on the front label states 40%, however the actual ABV is 41.5% Alc./Vol., as declared on the back label.

Other reviews... Nose: Sweet floral and grassy notes. Fresh cut cane billets sitting in the sun, some plump sultana notes and a very feint whiff of sweet polythene glue. Palate: A lovely delicate spirit, very little pepper, sweet fruit salad notes and very little, if any, funk at all. Some citrus peel is apparent and a nice vanilla twang is present as palate and finish overlap. Finish: Pleasant vanilla wraps around delicate fruit notes, a sprinkling of demerara sugar, some ginger-y spice and more citrus – but citrus oil in the finish. - rumtribe.com.au

Adelaide Hills Distillery Gunnery Spiced White Spirit (700ml)
    Adelaide Hills, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $84. 99
    Bottle
    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
The intention here was to create a spiced style 'rum' that wasn't simply driven by vanilla sweetness. Gunnery uses pot distilled spirits derived from both sugar cane and molasses, blending Australian native ingredients with traditional rum spices. Botanicals include Riverland orange and lemon aspen, Cinnamon Myrtle, Bush Tomato, Native Pepper Berry, locally Roasted Coffee Beans, Vanilla and Bush Honey.

Tasting note: Clear / very pale straw blush. Warming, semi sweet aromas. Vanilla, then fruity dark chocolate (orange / fig), faint peel freshness and muted cinnamon warmth. A silky, semi sweet delivery that repeats the bouquet with a delicious cinnamon flourish. Ends vanilla-heavy, but with enough spice and vibrancy to balance. 40% Alc./Vol.

    $399. 00
    Bottle
    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58%

A single cask selection of molasses-based rum, distilled in 2005 and left to mature in a bourbon barrel resulting in lots of fruit and funk. Trinidad Distillery remains one of the largest rum distilleries in the Caribbean, yet cask strength independent bottlings are seldom encountered. 244 bottles produced at 58% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... On the nose, aromas of old rubber tires and unripe banana mix with overripe paya, guava and powerboat petrol. A lighter and brighter side shines through on the palate, with glorious powdered citrus fruit juice and oversweet lemonade, sherbet dip, Italian ice and blue raspberry softening that boozy funk from the nose.

Entering the league of semi-mythical wood aged spirits, Caribbean rum doesn't come much rarer or more collectable than Caroni. The distillery was demolished in 2001 marking the end to 'heavy' rum production in Trinidad. Stocks are rumoured to be getting low, so whatever Caroni rum is still residing in cask will be edging ever closer to the very last. Famously produced using a wooden column still, well-aged expression are the rarest and most sought after. Bottled by Adelphi for their 30th anniversary, this single refill hogshead yielded 204 bottles at 56.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Jamaica's Clarendon Distillery (est.1949 and initially owned by the Monymusk Sugar Factory) is a large plant, home to about 5-6 column still marques and about 20 pot still marques. Amongst these is Monymusk, named after one of the oldest sugar cane plantations in Jamaica, located in Lionel Town, Clarendon. To confuse matters, there's also a brand called 'Monymusk', but that has only been around since 2012. The historical connection remains, as Clarendon is located on six acres in the Monymusk Estate. About 90% of the total output goes to Diageo's Captain Morgan and Myers brands, which in total accounts for about 60% of all Jamaican bulk rum exports. In short, Clarendon is a hybrid set up - on the one hand churning out industrial column still distillate for global brands, while on the other creating various esoteric and highly-regarded light and heavy ester pot-distilled rums. Obviously, this selection falls into the latter category. Although Adelphi aren't giving much away, it's rumoured that this was fully matured in a refill Madeira cask. At a potent 56.8%, it promises to deliver an all-natural and truly evocative Jamaican experience. From a run of 402 bottles.

    JAMAICA

    ABV: 54.3%
Like other independent bottlers, Adelphi are branching out to aged spirits categories besides whisky.
Built in 1750 and sought after for its powerful, estery, pot-distilled spirit, the Hampden estate is renowned for possessing the best cane lands in Jamaica producing the highest tonne sugar from tonne cane milled. This indie edition was bottled at 54.3% Alc./Vol. with an outturn of 346 bottles from cask JM1.

Notes from Adelphi... Deep amber in hue; little beading. American oak. Banana bread, caramel toffees, with a vegetal (artichoke, linseed oil) base surrounded by tropical floral scents. The taste is sweet and fragrant, with burnt sugar, and pop-corn in the aftertaste. A drop of water increases the caramel and oiliness, with tropical fruit juice and a rummy aftertaste.

Angostura 1824 celebrates the tradition of excellence established by the house of Angostura almost two centuries ago. This is an extremely smooth yet rich spirit and a departure from the lighter rums Angostura is known for.

The multi layered nose reveals top notes of pistachio nuts, vanilla and spice, then more profound, heavier scents of stewed stone fruits, creme-caramel and a whiff of brandy sauce. A sumptuous palate delivers a combination of banana cake, vanilla / chocolate fudge and all spice, refreshed by some orange zest and pine notes. Superb balance and mouthfeel. This lighter-bodied Jamaican is a combination of minimum 8 year old rums, born in copper pot stills and blended by Master Blender, Joy Spence. The result is summed up by diffordsguide.com as a "...generously dry rum, distinguished by its toasty oak tannins" and rated 4.5 stars. Enjoy it as a quality sipper or a premium mixer. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Golden amber color. Complex layers of fruit flavors with some subtle earthy funk make up this benchmark, consumer friendly Jamaican Rum. 93 points - tastings.com

Very sippable at 43% ABV. It’s certainly not “rough” in anyway. The initial entry is a nice burst of spice – black pepper, ginger and some warming oak and vanilla notes. Moving into the mid palate you get much more of the nose. Warming notes of cream, breakfast tea and some milky chocolate. A nice fruitiness as well with banana and some sweeter notes of green apple. Pretty much everything noted on the nose makes an appearance. The long spicy and oaked finish is wonderfully well balanced with the sweeter richer notes found in the rum. Again I’m reminding my self that this was under £30. At least trying a bottle of this is a no brainer. It’s certainly not what I would call a particularly big step down from the Rare Blend. In fact you might find this to be better or its equal. It doesn’t have some of the more “herbal” notes the Rare Blend has. This isn’t “funky” high ester hogo heavy Jamaican rum. Appleton Estate rums are a very different beast to say Hampden or National Rums of Jamaica. If you want funk from Appelton Estate than Wray and Nephew White Overproof is what you want. If you want an affordable and very nice every day sipper and a premium mixer – get this in your shopping trolley next time Tarquin takes you to Waitrose. The old Aged 8 Years is back and I think it might even be a little better than I remember. - thefatrumpirate.com

Notes from the producer... The appearance displays a dazzling topaz/honey colour with a gold rim and impeccable purity. The bouquet emits delicate scents of brown sugar and honey in the first nosing, further aeration compels the aroma to open up as it offers up biscuity scents of molasses, holiday spice and dried red fruit. The palate entry is sweet, honeyed and satiny in texture; the mid palate offers mature, composed and melted tastes of marzipan, caramel and brown sugar.

    JAMAICA
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

This is the new version of the 21 year old classic from Appleton, arriving in an updated bottle and box presentation. First launched in 1996 and named after the heart of Jamaica, the Nassau Valley, the reimagined expression reveals "...a floral scent that develops into a unique mature nutty bouquet, with notes of vanilla, orange peel, nutmeg, almond, coffee and cocoa for a long, dry and luscious finish."

The blend of rare and hand-selected pot and column still rums have all been tropically aged for a minimum of 21 years. Jamaica’s Nassau Valley, 400 ft above sea level, surrounded by limestone hills ranging up to 2,000 ft, provides beautifully filtered waters to the Estate-harvested cane.

“Jamaica is a place unlike anywhere else in the world,” notes Master Blender, Joy Spence. “With Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Nassau Valley Casks, we wanted to celebrate our home in an elevated, modern way with a new sleek, sophisticated version...”

Rooted in traditions that go past the American Revolution, not much has changed at Appleton since the 18th century: water is still sourced from a spring on the estate, small batch pot distillation remains the norm, done on-site using a proprietary yeast strain propagated from the estate-grown cane. The estate's versatile blends have been quietly changing the perception of rum, with homes and bars across the country embracing the rum renaissance. 43% Alc./Vol.

First launched in 2009, now is a good time to indulge in this Jamaican legend. It's only the second of its kind to be released in the distillery's 269 year history. Including liquid aged for more than 50 years, Master distiller, Joy Spence describes it as "one of my favourite rums" - a significant statement for an industry veteran of over twenty years. With a complex profile of vanilla, toasted oak, ginger, cinnamon and a smooth, long, spiced honey finish, it's guaranteed to impress serious rum aficionados. The age statement alone is staggering. Given the tropical maturation, Appleton started with 26 barrels and ended with just 13 due to the extreme evaporation rate. From those thirteen barrels just 4000 bottles have been released globally. Nothing has been added to the rum. Beautifully presented with a heavy 'decanter' style bottle and decorated stopper, we have less than a handful on offer.

...On the nose there is orchard blossoms, golden apples stewed with maple, cinnamon, ginger, cedar and candied orange zest delicately buttressed by vanilla. The palate is much lighter than you may expect from the nosing, but the flavors are intricate iterations of the aromas— presented with flowers, oxidized fruit, dark wood tones, voluptuous baking spices and creamy caramel/vanilla. The finish clings, showing molasses, maple, soft spice and sumptuous oak nuances. 96 points - distiller.com

While rum in general makes for a fantastic cocktail spirit, extra-old expressions like this really need to be appreciated straight. Master Blender, Joy Spence walks a tightrope with the 21 YO - the trick is adding extra layers of sensory excitement at the risk of becoming overly oaked, while at the same time, retaining some of the youthful, estery sweetness and vibrancy that's Appleton's house style. This gets the balance close to perfect. It's no wonder it was “Spirit of the Year” at the World Spirit Awards back in 2011. Just 12,000 bottles of this rare rum are produced annually, and Australia receives a special share in recognition of the growing group of consumers who have been passionately enjoying the aged blends of the Appleton Estate since the brand launched here in 2004.

Whiffs of shellac, resin and orange zest in the opening pass, evolving aromas of hazelnut / pistachio, walnut slice, raw sugar, extra-aged muscat and cocoa. 3-4 minutes exposure accents clove, vanilla bean and draws out hints of wine-soaked pears. Outstanding. Two decades in barrel sees the sugars reigned in with spicy oak overlaying flavours of raisins, dates, light molasses; finishes drier than the mid palate stage with threads of muscat wine, rancio and all-spice woven through the aftertaste. Remarkable persistence. References to top shelf Armagnac. A very special bottling from a timeless distillery and one of the great age-statements in Jamaican Rum. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This gorgeous copper-hued rum seems to shift flavors with every sip, encouraging contemplation. It starts with dry notes of espresso and bittersweet chocolate, then morphs into dark, mouthwatering brown sugar, toffee and clove, before easing into a spiced finish reminiscent of chai tea with a hint of white peach. 98 points - wineenthusiast.com

...The bouquet is floral, bean-like and pleasantly nutty. The palate entry is acutely astringent; the midpalate is baked nut-like with bitter tastes of oak and molasses. The aftertaste is long, desert-dry, sugary and sap-like. Not as overly woody as many old rums are; delicious in an old-guard style. 43% Alc./Vol.

"Top notch rum here... hard to put down — and so beautiful it’s a perfect candidate for straight sipping." - drinkhacker.com

For those who may not remember, this 2015 presentation replaced Appleton 'Extra'. While little blending information is offered, the recipe is said to have remained the same. We do know that it employs both column and pot still rums aged for a minimum of 12 years and reportedly contains liquid up to 18 years old. Appleton 'Rare Casks' ranks among a handful of readily available bottlings we'd recommend to anyone breaking into serious rum connoisseurship. Leading with powerful aromas of spiced apple, lean molasses and buttered fruit toast, developing banana confectionary, rancio and nutty, grilled corn-like notes, it also boasts ideal sweet/dry balance with spicy, fruity, brown sugar flavours countered by hints of banana cake and fine astringency. There are traces of walnut fudge, oaky vanilla and understated molasses at the last. Jamaican rums are known to be overtly fruity and funky, but Appleton’s style here is much tamer, instead offering a clinic on poise in the mid-tier rum category that's almost too good to mix. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews.... The first nosing passes find tight notes of molasses and walnut; aeration time releases bigger scents of nutmeg and spiced apple. The palate entry is wonderfully warm and spicy; at midpalate the taste turns cocoa- and vanilla-like, creamy and honeyed. Concludes creamy and delicious. 98 points - wineenthusiast.com

...This is top notch rum here, and easily the best of the bunch. Refined tropical notes — banana, coconut, brown sugar, vanilla-fueled barrel char — it’s all there, right on the nose. The body takes on a fruitier character, with chocolate lacing and more of a flame-kissed/charred fruit note, giving the rum a distinctly sweet, dessert-friendly character, yet it offers a little extra oomph thanks to the slightly higher proof. This one’s hard to put down — and so beautiful it’s a perfect candidate for straight sipping. - drinkhacker.com

Carribbean Class.

Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’.
