Grand Marnier Triple Sec Liqueur (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $74. 99
    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Made with Oranges and Cognac, Grand Marnier is a liqueur immortal and one of the world's best known curacaos. Aged in the cellars of Chateau de Bourg in Cognac and blended with fruit from the French West Indies, the company's entry level bottling has become a bar standard, combining the tantalizing fragrance of Seville oranges with the warm, intoxicating rush of extra-aged cognac in a 49/51 blend. Three super premium releases set the bar higher, introducing increasing proportions of (primarily) Grande Champagne Cognacs, sometimes boasting incredible age, adding further depth and complexity to an already remarkable liqueur. Whichever you choose, these expressions are best appreciated neat, on the rocks or in a snifter glass at room temperature.

Tasting notes: The brilliant deep polished brass colour is impressive in the glass. Superb purity in the opening sniffs featuring lifted mandarin / mixed peel freshness over heavier scents of orange cake and vanilla. A light satiny entry builds to a semi-sweet concentrate of citrus peel and mandarin with a lively spirit backbone, concluding fresh, mildly tart and vibrant with the honeyed citrus flavours persisting. Expertly balanced. Classic. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The aroma is a sweet/sour, tangerine/Mandarin orange perfume that never stops enchanting. At the palate entry the orange zest’s acidity mingles gracefully with the Cognac’s alcohol, making for delicious drinking. Satiny finish.
    Rating: 90-95 - wineenthusiast.com

Seasoned Casanovas also recommend Grand Marnier for a “Royal Romance”:

In shaker; one-fourth each of Passionfruit juice and Grand Marnier,
half gin, shake well and serve.

    Or try the popular B52:

    1/3 Grand Marnier
    1/3 Coffee liqueur
    1/3 Irish cream liqueur
Pour delicately on a bar spoon the coffee liqueur, the Irish Cream then the GRAND MARNIER liqueur into a shooter glass. Serve without mixing.

    The Charleston
1 shot of Cherry Brandy Liqueur (e.g. Cherry Heering)
    1 shot of Grand Marnier
top up with lemonade and ice
Method: Pour the cherry brandy and the orange liqueur into a highball. Stir well, then fill a highball glass with ice cubes and pour the cocktail directly over them . There is no need to use a strainer in this instance. Top up with the chilled lemonade to taste, then serve.

    Heering Cherry Liqueur (700ml)
    Copenhagen, DENMARK
    $56. 99
    Bottle
    $683.88 Dozen
    ABV: 24%

Heering Cherry Liqueur has been produced by Peter Heering’s company since 1818. The liqueur is produced entirely from the Danish Stevns cherries grown in Denmark, to a traditional recipe.

After harvesting, cherries are crushed and mixed with spirit, sugar & spices and then matured for three years in Heering’s cellars at Dalby. Its dark red colour and flavour of black-cherries is not overly sweet making it ideal to be served on its own, with or without ice, or as a mixer in cocktails and long drinks such as the world-famous Singapore Sling. No artificial flavours or colourings added. 24% Alc./Vol.

    Classic Cocktail: Singapore Sling
The Singapore Sling was created at Raffles Hotel at the turn-of-the-century by Hainanese-Chinese bartender, Mr. Ngiam Tong Boon. In the Hotel's museum, visitors may view the safe in which Mr. Ngiam locked away his precious recipe books, as well as the Sling recipe hastily jotted on a bar-chit in 1936 by a visitor to the Hotel who asked the waiter for it. Originally, the Singapore Sling was meant as a woman's drink, hence the attractive pink colour. Today, it is very definately a drink enjoyed by all, without which any visit to Raffles Hotel is incomplete. The recipe varies from book to book. Robin Kelly O'Connor, the Bordeaux expert, faxed Dale DeGroff of Craft of the Cocktail while he was staying there in 1990 and reports he's never tasted a better version.

    35 ml Plain Gin
    1 shot(s) HEERING - Cherry Liqueur
    8 ml COINTREAU
    8 ml BENEDICTINE - D.O.M.
    75 ml Pineapple Juice
    1 dash(es) ANGOSTURA - Aromatic Bitters
    2 dash(es) Grenadine Syrup
    10 ml Lime Juice
    Club Soda
    slice(s) Orange
    1 Cherry
Method: Shake all the ingredients except the soda with ice and strain onto a highball glass. Top with soda. Garnish with the orange slice and cherry.

    Darkwood Sling recipe:

    1 part cherry heering
    1 part soda water
    1 part orange juice
    ice cubes
Add one share of the liqueur then Soda. For a sour sling use Tonic (most people prefer the drink without Tonic). Afterwards, fill the glass with Orange Juice and ice cubes. Serve in cocktail glass.

    Heiwa Tsuru-Ume Nigori Umeshu (720ml)
    Wakayama, JAPAN
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 10%
    Closure: Screw Cap

Located in the Wakayama prefecture in Japan, Heiwa aim to produce drinks reflective of the climate and landscape where the raw materials are grown. Their Nigori (cloudy) Umeshu is made with local Nanko Ume fruit, and they also add its pulp into the Umeshu liqueur to further heighten the texture representative of the fruit itself.

Tasting Note:  Being classified nigori it's no surprise this is very cloudy, displaying a deep peach hue in the glass. Aromatically this is incredibly complex, with red plum present but complemented by a swathe of ripe stone fruit in the form of peaches, nectarines, and dried apricot. Add to this the subtle sweet elements of vanilla and tonka bean and it's an exceptionally pure and inviting nose. On the palate the viscosity is immediately apparent, yet the fresh acidity keeps the notable sugar in perfect balance. Flavours are a near replica of the nose, showing red plum and waves of ripe stone fruit, supported by white chocolate, vanilla bean and creme brulee. Outstanding. 10% alc

Serving suggestion:  Drink chilled on the rocks or with soda water, or mix it up in a cocktail like a Spritz. Can be stored in the fridge for at least 8-10 weeks once opened.

    Heiwa Tsuru-Ume Yuzushu (720ml)
    Wakayama, JAPAN
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 7.5%
    Closure: Screw Cap

Yuzushu can be likened to a Japanese version of limoncello, substituting lemon for the local Yuzu fruit, and combining the juice with Sake. Heiwa produce their Yuzushu with a high 1:1 ratio of one year old Sake and Yuzu juice. The Yuzu fruit is sourced from Wakayama, and is juiced with the peel ensuring all the sweet, sour, and bitter flavours of the fruit are retained.

Tasting Note: While it's a touch cloudy in the glass, this still presents as an incredibly vibrant medium lemon colour. The aromatics are very lifted, with pure yuzu and citrus zest, along with faint hints of lime and herbal grassiness. On the palate the flavours are equally expressive and pure, only hinting at the quality sake base on the finish. Having such a high ratio of yuzu juice there was a risk this would be too sour, and while it's definitely salivating, the acidity is more than matched by the freshness and intensity of flavour. Length on the finish is also a stand out. 7.5% alc

Serving suggestion: Enjoy chilled and served on the rocks, or as a long drink with soda water. Incredibly refreshing on hot summer days. With such purity and intensity of flavour it's easy to see why so many bartenders have taken this on as a cocktail mixer as well, leading to drinks with slightly more savoury citrus tones. Can be stored in the fridge for at least 8-10 weeks once opened.

Le Birlou Apple & Chestnut Liqueur (700ml)
    Vienezes, FRANCE
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 18%

Like many success stories, great ideas start in small places. Henri Monier was no exception, starting his drinks venture at the back of his bar in the Cantal region, one of the last bastions of rural France. In many parts of the country, beer is often mixed with liqueurs, cordials or bitters and Monier would serve his customers his own recipe made from local chestnuts with a dash of apple flavouring.  The resulting success of the liqueur prompted Monier to refine his recipe with the help of a local distiller. He named the drink by combining the word for beer (biere) with the local word "pelou", which refers the husk of the chestnut. By the year 2000 he finally applied for a distribution license, declaring Birlou the "Drink of the new millenium".

We were impressed with this product prior to any research, but came to learn of its International success with accolades such as a Silver Medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, in Luxembourg, two gold medalis in the International Spirits awards in 2008 and 2010 and Silver Medal (Best in Class, "Best in Class") at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2010.

In addition to its ability to contribute an extra dimension to beer, it favours the culinary world as a unique addition to chicken or sweets such as crepes, and the French have even turned it into a sorbet!.

Tasting note: [20% ABV batch tasted] Pours a glycerous, burnished copper colour. A stunning perfume offers a merry go round of aromas from stewed apples, cinnamon, nutmeg to roast chestnut. The creamy entry leads into a sweet, concentrated profile; flavours of stewed apple, cinnamon and chestnut are delivered with an exceptionally soft, silky, very gently warming mouth feel. Finish is clean and with appropriate acidity to avoid being overly sweet. The aftertaste powers on for 20 seconds plus, concluding with hints of cinnamon and apple pie followed by a roast chestnut fade. A remarkable liqueur that deserves a much wider audience.

    Luxardo Maraschino Cherry Liqueur (700ml)
    ITALY
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 32%

A benchmark elixir from Luxardo, a family owned company founded in 1821. This liqueur is produced by distilling Marasca cherries before maturation in unconventional Finnish ash casks. It pours a viscous water-like colour with tenacious cling to the glass and boasts a spice rack bouquet with penetrating, lifted aromas of cherry juice over secondary notes of fennel, spearmint, anise, sour dough bread and faint glace cherry. The thick, glycerous palate offers decadently rich flavours of sweet ripe cherry above marzipan and a layer of sweet spice. Silky throughout with super texture and a long aftertaste of cherry confectionary and marzipan. It's a world class liqueur. 32.0% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews.... The bouquet is lovely, balanced, properly astringent, ripe and juicy with scents of cherry stone and cherry juice. The palate entry is decadently sweet and textured with vibrant tastes of cherry compote and cherry preserves at midpalate. The finish is svelte, moderately syrupy and downright delicious. An outstanding liqueur: use it in an Aviation Cocktail. - 90-95: Superb/Highly Recommended - wineenthusiast.com

"Clear and bright, this cherry-flavored liqueur has an aroma more reminiscent of an eau de vie than a liqueur. On the palate, however, its texture is creamy and viscous. Its flavor is sugary up front, with an underlying heat, and a vibrant cherry flavor that shines through. While it might prove a bit too thick and sweet to drink on its own, it's obvious why this liqueur plays an essential supporting role in classic cocktails like the Last Word and Aviation." 92 points - distiller.com

    Mandarine Napoleon Liqueur (500ml)
    BELGIUM
    $49. 99
    Bottle
    $599.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%

Mandarines and tangerines were introduced to Europe in the early 1800s, and were considered exotic fruits with medicinal qualities. It became fashionable to infuse the fruits in cognac and to drink the results. Napoleon was himself partial to such drinks and frequently invited one of its greatest exponents, Antoine-Francois du Fourcroy, to indulge in the beverage. It is said to be Fourcroy's formula with which Napoleon wooed his favourite actress, Mlle Mars.

Fourcroy's "Mandarine Napoleon" is now manufactured by the internationally renowned Belgian company which bears his name. The liqueur is made by macerating mandarine peel in selected fine brandies. After maceration and distillation the spirit is compounded with the flavour and sweetened to produce a lightly flavoured unique product. Mandarine Napoleon today forms a classic base for a whole range of drinks and cocktails. It also makes a very pleasant summer long drink when mixed with tonic or orange juice. 38% alc./vol.

Other reviews... This gorgeous golden-orange liqueur bears fresh mandarin/tangerine aromas. The body is thick and buttery, and the palate follows the nose, but here the bold fruit flavor is well balanced with a tingling spiciness and notes of nutmeg and cinnamon. The finish is long and spicy/sweet. 92 points - wineenthusiast.com

Domaine Roulot are world famous for their exquisite wines from Meursault and surrounds, however lesser known is their expertise and passion for distilled spirits. The Roulot family have been making spirits since 1866, and Guy Roulot in particular had a love for the process of making fruit eau de vie. Guy's son Jean-Marc Roulot continues this tradition with production of a range of fruit liqueurs, along with eau de vie.

Le Citron du Roulot is made from organic Sicilian Petronio lemons that are prepared two different ways via infusion and distillation with minimal sugar and elderflower added for the final blend. Given the relatively low sugar (140g/L) and incredible citrus zest from Sicilian lemons, this is really a perfect expression of lemon.

The lychee grows to approximately 3-4 centimetres in size, oval to rounded-heart shaped with a bumpy skin that is red in colour. Once the skin is peeled, the crisp juicy flesh is white or pinkish, translucent and glossy like the consistency of a grape. Lychees have a sub-acid sweetness with a wonderful freshness. The fruit is also high in the antioxidant Vitamin C and the essential mineral Potassium. Soho Lychee liqueur, the pure essence of fresh lychee fruit captured in a light, refreshing, natural tasting liqueur, can be served at room temperature, or slightly chilled with lime & soda, cola, fruit juices or tonic water. This versatile liqueur is becoming increasingly popular in a wide variety of cocktails and after dinner drinks.
Other reviews... The highly perfumed aroma features good smells of lychee with additional layers of fragrances of parchment, palm oil, flowers and sealing wax. The palate entry is gently sweet and properly fruity; the midpalate displays a textured sweetness/ripeness that is delicious and light-to-medium weighted. Wraps up sweet, succulent, and genuinely tasty.  21% Alc./Vol. Rating: 90-95 points. - wineenthusiast.com

Tempus Fugit Creme de Banane Liqueur (700ml)
    SWITZERLAND
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 26%
There have been few high quality banana liqueurs on the market. Suntory produced a very good drier style called ‘Lena Banana’ for some time, however this version from Tempus Fugit sets the bar for the category in terms of flavour, authenticity and quality.

The liqueur first emerged in the mid-19th century when the banana was revered as a rare and exotic treat. Sourced from Europe's distant colonies, it soon became one of the most widely consumed fruits in the world. As a cocktail modifier it delivers the ripe and complex flavour of banana that bartenders have described as 'liquid banana bread'.

Apart from consumer consensus, Tempus Fugit's Creme de Banane has also received the highest rating of 5-Stars from F. Paul Pacult's prestigious Spirit Journal, resurrecting this quintessential crème as a modern classic and the perfect accompaniment for Tiki cocktails. Created from nothing but the distillation and maceration of bananas, water and sugar. 26% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... "This is an amazing liqueur achievement of the top rank."
Highest recommendation. - F. Paul Pacult, The Spirit Journal

It's dark colour and intense, over- ripe banana flavour set this superb creme de banana apart.

For cocktails or adult milkshakes. Refrigerate after opening and consume within six months.

Villa Massa Limoncello (Lemoncello) Liqueur (500ml)
    Sorrento, ITALY
    $52. 99
    Bottle
    $635.88 Dozen
    ABV: 30%

At the end of the 1800s, when guests came to Villa Massa, tradition dictated that they were offered a liqueur made from the fruit of the family lemon grove. The brothers Sergio and Stefano Massa founded the Villa Massa company in 1991 with the intention of making this liqueur accessible to everyone. Thus was born 'Villa Massa Traditional Lemon Liqueur', or as it is commonly called 'limoncello' now well-known all over the world.

Villa Massa was bought to our attention by a customer who believes it to be one of the finest liqueur experiences one can ever attain to. His unusual enthusiasm for the product intrigued us, so we decided to try a bottle ourselves. We must say, we were not disappointed. Unlike many impersonators, it's real limoncello from Sorrento, made with Sorrentine lemons, the only variety recognised by the term "Indicazione Geografica Protetta". Like other lemon liqueurs, it's best served icy cold, preferably on its own. But this particular expression possesses a lusciousness and intensity of natural fruit flavour found in few liqueurs. No wonder it's Italy's best-selling limoncello! No preservatives or colouring added. 30% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The slightly greenish liqueur (you can even get a sense of this in the photo) is largely transparent, with some modest cloudiness, typical of real limoncello. There’s a fresh lemon nose here, with touches of lime. These both carry over to the body — the lime is particularly evident — along with ample sweetness, but none of it is overblown the way some limoncellos can be. All in all it’s quite a simple digestif, its fresh citrus notes finding a wonderful balance between sweet and sour. Every home should have one bottle of limoncello around to cap off a good Italian meal — and this one won’t break the bank. (Good limoncello really beats grappa, guys…) - drinkhacker.com

"Refreshing, enlivening zesty lemon with cleansing citric acidity balancing the light sweetness." 4.5 Stars - diffordsguide.com

White Possum Naked Maraschino Liqueur (500ml)
    AUSTRALIA
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 31%

An intense cherry liqueur that fuses traditional Italian Maraschino flavours with a smattering of Australian desert peaches (aka quandongs). The result of over two years of experiments and trials, sour cherries are first crushed into a paste and then slowly fermented over many weeks to extract maximum flavour. This 'cherry wine' is then distilled in a pot still then rested and aged in a small vat. Finally, a rich infusion of quandongs contributes a distinctly fruity aroma, alongside a couple of other herbs and roots. Offered at a high ABV to preserve intensity, zero filtration takes place before bottling, so you may notice some sediment and oils that may drift out of the liqueur over time. Contains no artificial flavours or preservatives. Vegan friendly. Gluten free. 31% Alc./Vol.

Retasted 2018... As below, but with better length and overall freshness, the finish sustained by a judicious balance of tart peel and citrus oils. 92 points

First tasted 2015... Pale, slightly cloudy emerald green. The nose shows promise with lifted lemon sorbet notes refreshed by hints of peel. Viscous and sweet lemon cordial like flavours; finish is balanced by very delicate acidity. Everything's in its place but upping the zest and freshness would make for a classic. 88 points

Oranges, the exotic fruit that forms the basis of all Triple Sec, were originally from the Indies and China. The crusades introduced them to Europe from Palestine via Portugal. The original orange “curacao” was made with fruit from the Island of Curacao. However, the term now embraces a wide variety of liqueurs made from oranges and other produce as well (examples from Cointreau, Combier and Bols come to mind.) Typically created using only the peel of the orange, soaking it in water followed by distillation and rectification, this family of liqueurs plays an important part in many cocktails. 24% Alc./Vol.

    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $26. 99
    Bottle
    $323.88 Dozen
    ABV: 18%
Cassis is the French word for blackcurrant. The blackcurrant itself is of Nordic origin. It was only towards the beginning of the eighteenth century that Europe embraced it, both as a garden plant and for its medicinal qualities which earnt it the description of “elixir de vie.” However, as far back as the sixteenth-century monks from the famous Dijon region of France are recorded to have been growing blackcurrant bushes. The drink they made from it was offered as a universal cure-all for everything from snake bite to depression. While this is clearly fallacious, it is common knowledge that black currants are rich in vitamin C and the liqueurs made from them are enjoyable and healthy digestifs. Baitz Creme de Cassis is made by macerating the berries in grape brandy. Blackcurrants from the highest quality farms in the Port Huon area of Tasmania, Australia are used - recognised as being amongst the best in the world. On a dollar for dollar basis, Baitz Creme de Cassis represents outstanding value. 18% alc./vol.

The addition of approximately one teaspoonful of Creme de Cassis to dry white wine or champagne creates "Kir", an extremely popular French style aperitif.
