Tasting note: [2015 BATCH tasted] Crystal clear. Pepper and mild juniper followed by an interchange of orange blossom / pith / peel. The flower note repeats on the palate alongside flavours of orange cake combined with lemon verbena over background piney/juniper. Finishes peppery with citrus cough lozenge plus hints of flourless orange cake in the aftertaste. A cleverly juxtaposed Spring / Summer treat. 90 points 40% Alc./Vol

Another award winning Australian Dry Gin hits the market. Like most other recent Australian offerings, Stone Pine is pot distilled in small batches, gently infusing a blend of native and traditional botanicals to create a citrus-driven gin.

Proprietors, Bev and Ian Glen have their roots in the Scottish brewing and distilling industry. They moved to Australia complete with children and dog in 2006 with the aim of establishing Bathurst’s first microdistillery. Bev, with her background in running various Edinburgh pubs, manages the Cellar Door, while Ian is the distiller. Retasted Feb 2017 Expressive aromas of piney juniper, dried herbs and lemon thyme. Air contact maintains the focus on lemon / citrus. Follows through with an attractive, easy-drinking combination of lime and low-key juniper, finishing peppery, warming, medium long. Ups the concentration on the previous batch. Endlessly mixable. 40% Alc./Vol.

First tasted 2014 Crystal clear. Initially restrained by London Dry standards offering juniper and dried citrus peel in the first pass, becoming more expansive in the second inspection with a definitive citrus focus. A light entry builds into a medium bodied, citrus and coriander accented profile. Good balance. Closes mildly chalky, tangy, peppery and vibrant. Integrates well with tonic. 40% Alc./Vol. 89 points

Silver medal at the 2013 International Wine & Spirit Competition in London.

Other reviews... Stone Pine has fast become one of my favourite Aussie gins. Pot-distilled in small batches, Stone Pine Gin is firmly rooted in the London Dry style. Unlike many distillers, who readily share information on the botanicals used, the ingredients in Stone Pine Gin are a closely guarded secret. Although I have managed to find out from Ian Glen, the distiller, that the citrus notes of the gin are derived from the distillation of native finger limes. If you haven’t tried these delicious fruits, you’ve missed out. Often described as “citrus caviar”, they are being cultivated commercially and are becoming a key ingredient in many restaurants and bars. On first tasting Stone Pine Gin, citrus is the initial flavour with the sweetness of the limes very noticeable . It then develops into a warmer flavour of increasing intensity and finishes with a slight spiciness. I love it in a martini, either dirty or as it’s served here with a twist. - theginqueen.com

Strange Nature Premium Grape Gin (700ml)
    Marlborough, NEW ZEALAND
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44%

A gin not made, but grown - from Sauvignon Blanc grapes, and arguably the most exciting new gin to come out of New Zealand in some time. It all started when the Giesen brothers of Marlborough’s Giesen Wines were trying to strip the alcohol from sauvignon blanc to produce an alcohol-free product. The resulting liquid “was essentially a sauvignon blanc spirit”, says Rhys Julian, the general manager of Strange Nature. He adds, “At that point the wine-makers were discarding it, but we thought there was a really good opportunity to take that by-product and do something with it, because it retains heaps of those really tasty flavours from Marlborough sauvignon blanc." The team added juniper but then cycled through more than a dozen different botanicals trying to find the best combination. They ended up going back to basics, deciding that juniper and sauvignon blanc stand on their own merit. “Sauvignon blanc is really aromatic, it’s got those layers of grapefruit and tropical herbaceous qualities,” says Julian, “and so we settled on just one botanical, juniper, which is quite unusual and quite strange, hence our name, Strange Nature.”

Just as you'd expect, Strange Nature retains many of the quintessential notes of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc - as the producers describe it: Partly tropical and zesty with hints of fresh pineapple, candied grapefruit and a touch of kaffir lime and blood orange; and part savoury and herbaceous with piney juniper, blackcurrant leaf and fresh green pepper. Our tasting from a 30ml sample found powerful aromas of ripe feijoa, also hinting at passionfruit and nectarine with a light pepper overlay. There's a citrus/tropical fruit interplay on the palate too, evoking grapefruit, lime zest, feijoa, crushed pine buds and hints of papaya seed through the fresh, warming finish. It's a full bodied, vibrant and distinctive gin that when tasted neat, maintains a good balance of juniper against the fruitiness of the grape distillate. Mixing with soda is simple yet effective, although too much dilution tends to over-emphasise the varietal character of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Try loading up a highball glass with ice and a spritz of carbonated water garnished with a lime wedge. For a refreshing alternative, use East Imperial Grapefruit soda. Lovers of G&Ts should enjoy a generous pour over ice, topped off with a premium tonic, a lime wedge and a sprig of rosemary or thyme. 44% Alc./Vol.

Hobart No.4 Single Malt Gin (700ml)
    Hobart, Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44%

Notes from the distiller... Produced by Sullivans Cove Distillery, Hobart No. 4 single malt gin harks back to colonial times, when spirits were produced using local ingredients on small pot stills. Hobart No. 4 is produced from the same spirit used to make Sullivans Cove award winning whiskies, lending weight, body and malt character you’ll appreciate from the first sip. As well as traditional juniper, this richly textured gin is flavoured with four native botanicals; Lemon Myrtle, Anise Myrtle, Wattleseed and Tasmanian Pepperberry. Hobart No. 4 is perfect on the rocks with a wedge of pink grapefruit, or in your next classic gin cocktail like an old fashioned or negroni.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. Mildly peppery lift includes aromas of thyme, sweet oregano, liquorice root and hints of lemon butter. Aeration emphasises the citrus aspect as lemonade alongside mild cardamom. Light piney / junipery entry leads into a smooth, middle weighted profile with dominant liquorice root, light cardamom and vibrant pepper. Ends fresh, herbal and liquorice root-like. 44% Alc./Vol.

The delightful pink hue is also a contribution from the Lilly Pilly fruit. *Bottle shot indicative only.

Tasting note: Crystal clear with a pale pink blush. Sweet and perfumed - sort of in the Old Tom style. Pleasing scents of candied citrus peel combine with hints of anise, ginger, coriander, juniper and pine sap. A creamy entry leads into a semi-sweet mid palate featuring citrus peel, hints of juniper and pepper. Concludes drier with a juniper and pepper aftertaste followed by a fairly brisk grapefruit like fade. Disjointed yet quaint. Gets better the more time you take with it. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Tanqueray Rangpur Gin (1000ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41.3%

The Rangpur lime is not like the lime you'll find at your local fruit and veggie market. It's a unique fruit that blends attributes of other citrus - in fact it’s believed that Rangpur limes are crosses between lemons and tangerines. Orange coloured, they have the zestiness of ordinary limes but they're as juicy as an orange and look similar to a mandarin. The Rangpur tree itself is native to India, and can fruit year round for up to 40 years (be on the look out for these at nurseries - they're also said to be make beautiful ornamental trees). Enter the Tanqueray team who in 2006 decided to produce a new styled Gin with the influence of Rangpur limes. Like all of Tanqueray's gins, it includes the standard Tanq botanicals distilled into the spirit rather than infused. This distinction traps the flavours into the gin in a way that allows them to shine through in a more natural, authentic way that’s impossible with infusions. This time round the results are 'lip-smackingly delicious', and if the blogosphere is any indication, Rangpur is up there with some of the most genuinely exciting Gin innovations of all time.

The gin pours perfectly clear and follows with a sweet and citrusy perfume of lime and mandarine juice combined with mixed peel. This is no London Dry, with the juniper almost totally eclipsed, becoming apparent only with aeration. The soft entry develops into a gently spicy attack; semi sweet, juicy tangerine & lime flavours are followed by a subtle juniper note on the finish that refreshes and relieves the sweetness. Excellent balance, this gets silkier with every sip. It would make for an intriguing martini moreso than G&Ts. We found it calls for some citrus bitters and demands experimentation. On its own remains undeniably exotic and charming. 41.3% Alc./Vol.

Diageo's newest limited-edition extension to the Tanqueray brand is the juniper-forward Tanqueray Bloomsbury, based on an 1880s-era recipe created by Charles Waugh Tanqueray, the son of the brand founder (at that time, the Tanqueray distillery was located in Bloomsbury in central London).

The gin features prominent notes of Tuscan juniper combined with secondary botanicals like coriander, angelica, winter savoury and cassia bark. It follows recent upscale limited-edition launches from the brand, including Tanqueray Old Tom gin in 2014 and the citrus-heavy Tanqueray Malacca in 2013. $1740.00 Dozen
    ABV: 47.3%
A limited edition of 100,000 individually numbered bottles, this is a revived and personal rendition from Tanqueray's Master Distiller, Tom Nichol, based on an original recipe from Charles Tanqueray's private records. The precursor ceased production in 1921. The packaging harks back to the original.

Due to the modern day resurgence of this genre, many will be aware that the "Old Tom" style refers to a fuller, richer and slightly sweeter kind of gin that was once one of the most widely available spirits stocked in Victorian-era bars in both England and the U.S.

To make this contemporary version, Tanqueray employ neutral grain spirit, re-distilled with Tuscan juniper, angelica root, coriander and licorice in their fittingly named 'Old Tom' No. 4 copper pot still (so called because it comes from the only Tanqueray facility to survive the Blitz). Some unaged wheat spirit is then blended in along with a small amount of sweetener (made with beet sugar), and water reducing it to 94.6 proof.

So many super enthusiastic reports on this have us more than tempted to open a bottle, but with this extremely limited shipment, we're going to give first pick of the cherry to customers. Enjoy!

Based on a recipe by Charles Tanqueray and originally developed in 1839 for the Far East this latest Tanqueray release was discontinued after a short lifespan, only to be relaunched in early 2013. Named after the Straits of Malacca, a narrow waterway separating the Malaysia Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra, it's a sweeter styled gin with less juniper emphasis and more citrus than the classic Tanq style. Reportedly, it's already achieved cult status among cocktail revivalists in the UK where it was a revelation to many in the burgeoning cocktail scene. It works as a substitute for the original Old Tom gin style. Be quick, word has it only 100,000 bottles will make it to market - then it's all over. Again. 40% Alc./Vol.

There's no doubt that alcohol strength plays an important role in flavour delivery. The most exciting taste experiences from spirits usually come from bottlings over 46% ABV. Unfortunately, tax laws in Australia mean that many mainstream spirits are marketed on price first, flavour second. The temptation for producers to bottle at lower strengths is understandable. They know that their brand will fall into a different tax bracket, so they'll pay less, and ultimately appear more competitively priced in a crowded market. The compromise is on flavour. So if you think you've tried Tanqueray, think again. This is a limited shipment at "Export Strength" revealing this Gin's full splendour.

    Reduced from $120.00
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 47.3%
Another 19th century Tanqueray recipe has surfaced, this time from 1832. The new expression has a “savoury twist”, thanks to the addition of the English garden herb, lovage.
Juniper, angelica, liquorice and coriander are also in the mix.

World-renowned bartender, Jason Crawley, helped create the new gin which he describes as “deeply herbaceous, celery-like and earthy, whilst retaining that signature juniper-citrus forward style”.

Launched in the UK in early 2018, the new expression is reportedly the first gin to be created with lovage.
“We had to work a lot harder on the distilling process, because at first it came through a bit soupy,” explained Crawley. “We had to practice, adding a little bit more this and a little bit more that. We looked at it a bit like a graphic equaliser – we had all the key parts of Tanqueray, but we turned up the bass a little, turned up the treble and dropped down the middle section. It was all a case of tweaking it.”

Around 100,000 bottles have been released in Europe, Taiwan and Hong Kong. We've sneaked in a small amount for the Australian market!

Tasting note: Classically London dry with strong piney/juniper aromas as well as coriander, orris root, pepper and delicate herbal / coastal notes (kelp?) A lively, full flavoured and keenly balanced gin with a fresh juniper and coriander-led delivery; oily textured through the middle stages with budding pepper warmth and subtle celery leaf (?) giving an interesting vegetal twist to the finish. A vibrant, expertly integrated variation on traditional London dry. 47.3% Alc./Vol.

    UNITED KINGDOM

    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
Sourced from an independent, family owned company established in 2012 on the coast of north Cornwall who handcraft Gin and Pastis in tiny runs (the old-fashioned way). A small batch approach sees about 300 bottles created in each run, sometimes much less - each ensuring maximum care and attention. Each bottle is hand filled, wax sealed, labelled and signed by the distiller.

At the heart of the process lies a special, flame-fired, copper pot still (named 'Tamara'). Botanicals include juniper from Kosovo, coriander seeds from Bulgaria, fragrant handpicked Devon violets and fresh orange zest. Also employed are angelica root, orris root, green cardamom seeds, bitter almond, cinnamon and liquorice root.

The distillers compare the aromatic sensation to "... stumbling upon a beautiful orange blossom in the middle of a crisp, dry pine forest."

Taylor & Smith Dry Gin (500ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $87. 99
    Bottle
    $1055.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Taylor & Smith is made up of Natalie Smith and Ben Taylor, based in Moonah, a suburb of greater Hobart. The base spirit (in part) is from Tassie apples from the Huon Valley that the duo ferment and distill themselves. A nod to a London Dry, their Dry Gin (as opposed to their standard gin) features the four key botanicals of sage, abalone shell, Huon Pine needles and red grapefruit.

Fresh sage is grown in the distillery garden and shells are sourced whilst on family abalone dives. Once cleaned, the shell is dried and broken into tiny pieces to infuse in the gin. Abalone shell, used in Chinese medicine, is a calcium carbonate that neutralises acids and adds a slight salinity to the spirit. Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii) is a species of conifer native to Tasmania. It's found by the edge of rivers and is an incredibly slow-growing, revered local timber. The needles provide piney notes that differ to juniper and add to the complexity. Try this in a dry martini, with dry tonic and a sprig of rosemary. Also makes for a fabulous Oyster Martini. 46% Alc./Vol.

The Negroni pack includes the following products to create the perfect Australian Negroni:

    • 1 x Patient Wolf Dry Gin (700ml)
    • 1 x Maidenii Sweet Vermouth (750ml)
    • 1 x Applewood Okar Amaro (500ml)
    • 1 x Mister Bitters Negroni Bitters (100ml)

    Making the Perfect Australian Negroni...

It all started with the Americano and an Italian Count who liked it boozy. Created by Gaspare Campari around 1860, the Americano is 1 part Vermouth and 1 part Campari topped with soda. It was originally named the "Milano-Torino" - the Campari from Milan and the vermouth from Turin (an important footnote when considering the “classic” Negroni). Legend has it that around 1920 Count Camillo Negroni, wanting a bigger buzz from his spritz, asked a bartender to replace the soda in his Americano with gin. So the Negroni was born - bitter, sweet and so deliciously complex. For some devotees, the greatest drink in the history of drinks.

Many adaptations now exist on the classic combination of equal parts gin, Vermouth and Amaro. Bartender, Luigi Bosco reflects, “Theoretically, the Negroni is the easiest drink to make. In reality though, because of the huge range of products consumers have at their disposal nowadays, it's a bit more complicated. I found myself tweaking the ratios multiple times to find the right balance, mostly because some vermouths aren't rich enough to get along with an equal amount of Amaro. Also, the lower alcohol contents in many modern Gins meant I often had to increase the amount of Gin.”

With this search for balance in mind and a range of superb Australian products at our disposal, this is where the fun starts! For a more strident and bitter, boozy aperitif try 20ml Maidenii, 30ml Applewood and 40ml Patient Wolf Gin with two hard dashes of Negroni bitters for that classic orange edge.

    • 40ml Patient Wolf Premium Dry Gin
    • 30ml Applewood Okar Amaro
    • 20ml Maidenii Sweet Red Vermouth
    • Two hard dashes of Mister Bitters Negroni bitters for that classic orange edge.
    • Garnish: Orange slice.

Method: Stir briefly in a mixing glass filled with ice then strain into an ice-filled rocks glass or tumbler. Twist an orange zest over the surface of the drink to release fresh aromatic oils. Garnish with the orange wedge if desired. A classic 1:1:1 ratio results in a soft, cinnamon scented entry into the Negroni (almost a cinnamon “Negronut”).

Numerically-named spirits are trending in the Gin category. London No.1 is owned by the Spanish company, Gonzalez Byass (better known for Tio Pepe Sherry), but the gin itself is produced at London's Thames Distillery. The brand is noted for having an unusual pale blue hue - probably a nod to one of the more curious ingredients - Gardenia flowers. Because the colour is added post distillation, EU spirits regulations preclude the use of 'London Dry" on the label. Marketing gimmicks aside, No.1 is essentially London Dry-inspired. Juniper, coriander, angelica and citrus peel are supported by liquorice, almond, savory, cassia, cinnamon and bergamot. From a 30ml sample the bouquet offers perfumed aromatics include white pepper and herbal / bark-like scents over a juniper base note. Concentrated, pleasantly peppery attack follows through to a creamy, herbaceous and juniper focused middle. The finish is leaner, but just as vibrant. The aftertaste turns spicy, drying with late suggestions of chamomile and peppermint tea. Nice length, and the intensity at 47% is a bonus, especially when it comes to mixing.

Other reviews... London No. 1 is surprisingly well-constructed. On the nose you’ll find a solid juniper base, plus hints of caramel sauce, orange and even grapefruit notes. The licorice character is mild but distinct — while this ingredient is becoming commonplace in modern gins, this is one of the few products I can recall where I could actually taste the licorice element. The body of London No. 1 Gin starts off restrained, zero alcoholic burn, and almost tasting watery despite a hefty 47% abv. But things open up a bit with some air, revealing more of the gin’s nuances. Some earthy notes emerge at the start, with juniper and citrus peel close behind. The midpalate veers toward a bittersweet character, its citrus taking on balsamic notes, with some of that lily-driven floral character finally emerging as the finish rumbles along. There’s sweetness on the back end too, a bit earthy, almost caramel mixed with honey in character, perhaps thanks to the bergamot. It’s a nice way to end things — not too dessert like, and providing a nice balance to the racier front side. I’m not sold on the blue color, but the gin itself is versatile, well-made, and unique in its own way. - drinkhacker.com

...Pretty silvery powder blue color. Delicate aromas of powdered nut pastry, anise, date custard, and pinecone with a supple, dryish medium-full body and a gently warming sweet baking spices, pepper, lemon, and juniper gelato accented finish. A very smooth and stylish gin for martinis and clever cocktails. International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal

We're serious about gin.

Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve. From Navy Strength to organic to sloe gin, browse our range today. A long departure from the once "fuddy-duddy" association of the genre, Vickers, Gordon's and other ubiquitous brands are threatened to be swallowed in a giant yawn by the progressive, quality-savvy new-gin devotee. Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics. Learn more today...
