Champagne

From a simple name of a French province, Champagne has become a magic word that needs no translation. It is synonymous with elegance and savoir vivre, style and refinement. We continue to ship directly from small and large producers, bringing lesser known labels to the attention of Australian Champagne enthusiasts. We also frequently offer very special deals from bigger houses. Browse our top rated Champagnes here.

A buoyant mousse dissipates to reveal a salmon pink coloured base that’s finely threaded by a persistent bead. Jumping out of the glass are notions of cherry, strawberry and blood orange fruits that are pitted against yeast lees and light baked bread notes. Quite full and voluminous in the mouth, the palate is presented with a concentrated flavour profile of cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry fruits which intermingle with notions of yeast lees. Finishes dry and crisp with a chalky mineral character flowing through to the long aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Expressive flavors of dried cherry, singed orange peel and red licorice are backed by a firm spine of acidity in this racy rosé Champagne, which is tightly meshed and balanced, with the creamy mousse carrying hints of salty mineral and grilled nut on the mouthwatering finish. Disgorged October 2018. Drink now through 2032.

Produced from a blend of 41% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir and 25% Meunier. A fine satiny mousse shows good hold over a pale straw coloured base that has flecks of pale gold around the edges. The bead is exceptionally fine and persistent. Pear, citrus and toast notes show good intensity melding into yeast lees, roasted almond and faint dried honey. The palate combines tension with ample richness and finesse. Sculptured in its mouthfeel, flavours of baked bread, citrus and oily toast characters sit over subtle dried honey and roasted almond. Dry chalk tinged finish with refreshing acidity and a medium to long aftertaste.

Disgorged in February 2018 with five grams per liter dosage, Moët's 2012 Extra Brut Grand Vintage is showing well, unfurling in the glass with an expressive bouquet of ripe yellow orchard fruit, peaches, toasted nuts, warm bread and honeycomb. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a tangy but ripe core of fruit, nicely integrated acids and a pinpoint mousse, concluding with an attractively fruit-driven finish. The 2012 reflects both the concentration of the vintage and Moët's push for riper fruit, and it is already quite accessible. Drink 2018-2028.

The scale of 15,000 pickers arriving each day during harvest is awesome, and this wine proves it is not at the expense of quality. The blend (55% chardonnay, 41% pinot noir, 26% pinot meunier) was disgorged in February 2018 with a very low dosage of 5g/l, and is a lovely wine, with perfect fruit weight, balance and length.

The Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Blanc 2008 is an assemblage of 40% Chardonnay, 37% Pinot Noir and 23% Pinot Meunier. Excellent frothy white mousse that shows good hold sitting over a pale straw/pale gold coloured base wine. The bead is extremely fine and very profuse. On the nose roasted almond and yeasty scents are intermixed with toasty citrus, brioche and cashew. Richer and fuller than the 2008 Veuve Clicquot Vintage the palate sports a flavoursome profile of baked bread and yeast lees intermeshed with fresh citrus fruits over some cashew and subtle toasty characters. Vibrant finish with a creamy yet very refined mouthfeel. The long aftertaste a combination of baked bread, yeast lees, citrus, cashew and a light toastiness.

Moët's 2006 Brut Grand Vintage is beautiful, finessed and expressive. Smoke, slate, apricot and pastry notes emerge as the wine gradually unfolds. Rich and textured on the palate, yet beautifully supported by veins of minerality, the 2006 is simply impeccable from the very first taste. The richer, honeyed notes typical of Chardonnay in this vintage are particularly evident today while the Meunier, which has higher acidity, keeps things bright, although it plays a lesser part in the overall blend than in years past. The 2006 is 42% Chardonnay, 39% Pinot Noir and 19% Pinot Meunier. Dosage is 5 grams/liter. Drink 2014-2026.

Sleek acidity trims the sails of this otherwise rich and expansive Champagne, keeping it finely balanced and racy throughout. Flavors of roasted hazelnut, crushed blackberry, ripe apricot, honey and ginger biscuit glide on the silky palate to a saline-tinged finish. Drink now through 2029.

The "Eaux de vies Marc" are to France what Grappa is to Italy. Usually associated with the name of the wine region in which it is produced, the production of these eaux de vies is strictly regulated. The Moet et Chandon "Marc de Champagne" is produced from distilled pomaces of Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Meunier from the Champagne region. It undergoes a maturation in oak casks for several years until the desired texture and smoothness is achieved.

Traditionally served chilled, "Marc de Champagne" can be enjoyed in many ways but perhaps the most enjoyable of them all will be during a dinner party between dishes, or poured over an icy cold fruit sorbet just before another flute of Champagne! 40% Alc./Vol.

The Moet & Chandon Non Vintage is a blend of wines from a specific year, with the addition of different reserve wines from earlier years (the precise proportions vary from year to year) in order to achieve consistent quality and character. Moet & Chandon sources grapes from nearly all the different classified vineyards of Champagne which greatly assists to achieve this consistent quality.A blend of Chardonnay, Pinot and Pinot Meunier. Pale yellow colour with a tinge of green. The nose is delicately vinous, with an initial aroma of both lime and vine blossom. The palate shows predominantly Pinot characteristics. Light, persistent sparkle. Very ample in the mouth, with a discreet finish. Essentially an aperitif, but is also a good accompaniment to fish.

Montaudon Classe M. Brut Champagne - Pre-Arrival Offer
    Champagne, FRANCE

    Closure: Cork

Champagne Montaudon is one of the most exciting and individual of Champagne Houses. The cellars are located in Reims, close to Reims Cathedral and are exported throughout Europe, USA, Japan, South Africa and now Australia. The Montaudon is still owned by the founding family, a rare thing in Champagne, which has become the home of Corporate Giants. In 1891 Auguste Louis Montaudon came to Champagne as a cellar manager. Some years later, his son Auguste Eugene, decided to create a Champagne House which danced its way to success in the 1920ís and was later to become the wine found in the top Caberet Clubs of Paris. It is said that in 1936, the mystical star of Revue Negre and Folies Bergeres, Josephine Baker signed a contract with Montaudon to supply her Caberet Clubs with first class Champagne. The rest, as they say, is history. Whilst the buildings which house the operations of Montaudon are historic, the wine making facilities are very modern, with a number of small stainless steel vats available to ferment and store the base wines until they are required for blending.
Nicks Wine Merchants / Vintage Direct have managed to secure the marketing and distribution rights for this outstanding Champagne for the Australian Market. The quality of Montaudon is exceptional as can be attested by the comparative tasting results conducted by Wine Spectator Magazine in the USA. From our own tastings the results have been very impressive, particularly so when one considers the price points compared with other much larger Champagne Houses.

The ultimate expression of Champagne as perceived by the Montaudon Family, the "Class M" out-rated the 1996 Louis Roederer Cristal ($250.00) and the 1993 Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill ($100.00) in a recent Wine Spectator tasting. The wine is beautifully presented in 19th Century replica bottles. Again, as with all the Montaudon, the Champagne pours visually to perfection with creamy mousse and extremely fine and persistent bead. Superbly refined nose of cashews, biscuit, yeast lees and subdued creme caramel end note. The palate texture is exceptionally creamy, with a sense of refinement only ever found in the top cuvees of the best producers. There is a remarkable length and persistence of flavour here, with honeycomb , yeast lees and biscuit emerging. Superb length and balance with exceptionally long aftertaste.

Sébastien Mouzon is a dynamic, ninth-generation grower producing exciting and terroir driven wines at his domaine, Mouzon-Leroux. Based in the Grand Cru village of Verzy, Sébastien farms eight hectares of vines spread across 60 separate plots. While much of the vineyard area is planted to Pinot Noir, there are additional small parcels planted to the remaining six varietals legally allowed in Champagne; Chardonnay, Arbane, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier and Petit Meslier. Aiming to bring further translation of site to his wines, Sébastien works with very low yields in his certified organic vineyards, with fermentation and élevage then completed in a mix of steel tanks and older 500L barrels. Sulphur additions are also kept to a minimum.

L’Exaltant is made 100% of Grand Cru Verzy Pinot Noir grapes, that received just a day of skin contact for a blush of colour before the juice was fortified with grape spirit. No fermentation, no sugar addition, no fining and no filtration. A thrilling, pure-fruited aperitif. Served chilled over ice.

Champagne Pascal Agrapart is one of the great grower producers, based at the heart of the Cote des Blancs in the grand cru village of Avize. Pascal has the reputation for being a grape grower first and Champagne producer second; a philosophy shared with his son Ambroise who is now in charge of production. Ambroise and the team works an astonishing 70-plus micro-plots in the Cote des Blancs, mostly in Avize, but also in Cramant, Oiry, Oger, Avenay-Val-d’Or, Bergeres-les-Vertus and Mardeuil. All of these parcels are ploughed, and no chemical pesticides, fertilisers or herbicides are ever used. Production is very small, with no more than 6,000 cases produced in any given year.

Formerly known as Experience, Agrapart's EXP is utterly unique in the world of Champagne. Given how difficult it is to produce, and the inherent rarity of such a cuvee, demand for EXP around the globe is enormous which is in part reflected in the price of this spectacular Champagne. In 2002, Agrapart sought and (remarkably) received permission from the local authorities to begin experimenting with a small quantity of wine that he wanted to produce without any sugar additions at all; no chaptalisation and no additions for the second fermentation and final dosage. Not using sugar and yeast for the liqueur de tirage (to prompt the second fermentation in the bottle) is actually against the AOC laws, which is why Agrapart needed permission. Instead of sugar, he uses must (grape juice) from the same vineyards that produce the wine, thus enabling him to produce a Champagne that is solely the product of estate-grown grapes.

This 2017 release is an equal blend from vineyards that also contributed to the Avizoise and Mineral cuvees (Les Robarts in Avize and Les Bionnes in Cramant), ‘dosed’ with around 20% of the juice of 2018 from these same vineyards. It was this juice that drove the secondary fermentation in the bottle. No sugar or yeast additions were used for either fermentation, and the wine was not fined or filtered.

From Les Bionnes in Cramant (vinified in barrel) and Champbouton in Avize (vinified in tank), two parcels that share a similar geological profile, Agrapart's 2016 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Minéral offers up aromas of crisp stone fruits, wet stones, lemon oil and fresh mint. Full-bodied, satiny and vinous, with terrific texture and cut, it's a vibrant, dynamic wine that's worth a special effort to seek out. Drink 2022 - 2042.

Sharp and focused with very fine bubbles. Precise. Lots of almonds, lemon peel, crushed stones, white pepper and apricot stones, as well as white pears. This has captured so much energy, with a long and refined finish. 100% chardonnay. 3g/L dosage. Disgorged May 2022. Drink or hold.

The 2016 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Avizoise derives from lieux-dits Les Robarts and Les Gros Yeux in Avize, two sites that are characterized by deeper clays than those in the parcels that inform Minéral. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of apple blossom, citrus zest, confit orange, freshly baked bread and warm biscuits, it's full-bodied, satiny and layered, with terrific concentration, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. This concentrated, vinous, chiseled Champagne is a remarkable wine! Drink 2025 - 2040.

A broader Blanc de Blancs for Agrapart, with plenty of hazelnuts, walnuts, lemon cream, mango stones and peaches. Creamy and round bubbles. Textured, with chalky notes on the finish. Comes across very dry. 100% chardonnay. 3g/L dosage. Disgorged May 2022. Drink or hold.

The 2015 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs L’Avizoise Grand Cru stands out in this range for its breadth and power. Lemon peel, savory herbs, dried flowers, grapefruit and mint lend a bit of upper register and aromatic presence. Slight vegetal notes, a characteristic of any 2015s, lurk beneath, while texturally the Avizoise is on the lighter side. For those reasons, I would not push my luck on aging. The 2015 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Minéral Grand Cru is bracing, taut and wiry. Crushed rocks, mint, white pepper and lemon peel drive this blend. The Minéral is especially fine in 2015. Philipponnat's Clos des Goisses vineyard is one of the most famous in all of Champagne, and having been purchased by the Philipponnat family in 1935 it immediately became its crown jewel. The name is taken from the local dialect “Gois” meaning very steep, and the vineyard is the steepest, directly south-facing site in the whole of Champagne with a gradient between 30-45%. Pinot Noir dominates the cuvee with the typical blend two-thirds Pinot and one-third Chardonnay, granting Clos des Goisses with power, structure, and exceptional longevity. Work is done almost entirely by hand, and no insecticides or synthetic herbicides are used in the vineyard.

Disgorged in April 2021 with the usual 4.5 grams per liter dosage, Philipponnat's 2012 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses offers up generous aromas of pear, pomelo and peach mingled with hints of honeycomb, macadamia nut and fresh bread. Full-bodied, broad and vinous, it's fleshy and textural, with a strikingly concentrated core of fruit, compelling mid-palate plenitude, bright acids and a pillowy pinpoint mousse. Demonstrative, even dramatic, its youthful generosity is deceptive, as it's only with some bottle age that real complexity will emerge. Drink 2025 - 2045.

The 2012 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses is a Champagne of extraordinary elegance and finesse. Silky and aromatic, the 2012 impresses with its mid-weight, refined personality. Hints of kirsch, red plum, flowers and chamomile open gently in the glass. Clos des Goisses is often a rich, vinous Champagne, but the 2012 comes across as restrained and understated in all the right ways. Its aging potential will be measured in decades not years. Sadly, severe spring frost took with it a startling 50% of the crop. According to Charles Philipponnat Pinot fared better than Chardonnay. Ultimately, though, the Goisses blend is a typical two-thirds Pinot and one-third Chardonnay. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Drink 2024 - 2047.

A wonderful nose blending a wonderful combination of fruit and sweet patisserie elements - lemon, apple, grapefruit and pear with buttery biscuit and roasted hazelnut notes. The palate is strikingly bright filled with textured, lively and persistent bubbles underpinned by balanced acidity and depth of flavour overall. A really well-constructed Champagne from the acclaimed 2012 vintage giving body, weight, precision and drive with a long length. Each sip is so satisfying. Disgorged in April 2021 after eight years on the lees, 60% aged in Burgundy barrels and 40% in stainless steel. A dosage of 4.5g/l which is the same for every Clos des Goisses. This, alongside with the 1996 vintage are new to the Place de Bordeaux this year with Philipponnat the first Champagne house to use the distribution network. Drinking Window 2021 - 2035.

Open-knit and inviting, the 2008 Royale Réserve Brut Rosé is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Pinot Noir plays an important role in this distinctly vinous, rich Rosé. The soft contours and slightly forward aromatics suggest the 2008 is best enjoyed over the next handful of years. Still, readers should expect a fairly intense Champagne with plenty of red stone fruit and blood orange inflections, along with the considerable resonance of Pinot Noir, which makes up 75% of the blend. The majority of this cuvee is always Pinot Noir (40-50%) with the balance being generally made up of Chardonnay (30-35%) and Pinot Meunier (15-25%). The cork on this particular bottle was very difficult to extract. Having finally opened the bottle it poured well with a white creamy mousse showing good hold followed by a pale gold base wine colour. The bead is very fine and shows excellent persistence. Superb nose showing much more intensity and varietal character than the three Tasmanian cuvees tasted before it. Aromas of baked bread, yeast autolysis characters and toast are followed by some light almond notes. The palate is quite full and rich delivering flavours of yeast lees, baked bread, brioche and a touch of hazelnut. Almost creamy like texture with a clean dry finish. Long aftertaste of yeast lees, toast and biscuit.

    Notes from producer.....
Fleuron means “flagship” is selected from only the great years. The Fleuron cuvée, a true showcase of our vintages, is a work of assembly that adds the qualities our best terroirs and «lieu-dit» of our domain. cuvee These qualities obviously result from our Terroirs (mostly from Cramant and Chouilly) but according to our conception of Champagne, it’s always essential to add some Cuis 1er Cru to give some freshness and delicacy. A great wine is a balance wine between structure, fruit, elegance, and minerality and definitely pleasant… And to reach that, assembly prevails…

The vineyards are grown organically, and they use biodynamic practices to invigorate the vines. Their mixture of holdings are planted to 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, with the cuvees leaning towards Pinot Noir dominance.

Les Parcelles is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, with 30% reserve wines supporting the base vintage. After blending the wines are matured on less for a comparatively long four years before being disgorged at an Extra Brut level of 1.8 grams per litre of dosage.

(XIII bottling) The NV Bouzy Grand Cru Les Parcelles XIII is based on the 2013 vintage plus roughly 40% of reserve wines from 2012, 2011 and 2010. The assemblage consists of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, fermented in stainless steel and in a few demi-muids. The nicely colored wine (white gold with a pink reflection due to the late harvest and no fining agents) offers a very clear, precise and delicate bouquet of cherries and red berries. Pure and filigreed on the palate, this is a beautifully pure, clear, fresh and delicate blend that reveals impressive mineral structure and length. Simply fascinating. Marked by a tight-knit core, the 2016 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys is very different from the fuller-bodied, more powerful 2017 rendition. Disgorged in December 2023 with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter, it’s a more linear Montjolys, stylistically reminiscent of the 2013 rendition. Offering up aromas of white flowers, green apple, fresh hazelnut and oyster shell, it is crystalline and nuanced, structured around mouthwatering acidity and concludes with a focused, chalky finish. It’s one of the more elegant versions of this cuvée, demonstrating subtle complexity, and I loved it! As always, it derives from a vineyard based on deep clay soil, where the resulting wines are more textural and less taut than those produced from Les Chétillons. Drink 2024-2044.

The 2016 Champagne Blanc De Blancs Les Montjolys Cuvée Speciale Brut displays more breadth in the range and pours a medium straw hue. It reveals a delicate smoky profile, with more savory aromas of ripe golden pears, toasted bread, lemon balm, and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, the palate gains in salinity, with a crunchy feel, a spritely and elegant mousse, and a great finish. It’s prime for holding another year or so and drinking over the following 15 years or more, as it’s surely going to improve as it leans into its more tertiary characteristics. Drink 2026-2042.

Unwinding in the glass with scents of sweet orchard fruit, peach, honeycomb, warm biscuits and dried fruits, the 2017 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Millésime L’Esprit de 2017 is medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with fine concentration, racy acids and a long, saline finish. Péters describes the vintage in the Côte de Blancs—which suffered less than sectors where Pinot predominates—as "a precursor of 2019," in the sense that small yields attained elevated maturity without losing freshness; and this Champagne does indeed transcend simplistic generalizations about the vintage. Disgorged with five grams per liter dosage, the 2015 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons has turned out well, unwinding in the glass with aromas of freshly baked bread, crisp orchard fruit, clear honey, warm biscuits and dried white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and muscular, it's a deep, compact wine structured around racy acids and chalky extract. It's a strong effort, but it will demand a bit of patience to reveal all its potential. Péters was careful not to pick too soon, classifying 2015 along with 2011 and 2007 as years defined by an early harvest where it was nonetheless critical to avoid picking too early. Drink 2025-2050.

A sister to Les Chétillons, its vines just a little lower, with a little more clay over the chalk bedrock. Pale dreamy lemon, then an appealing attack of sourdough which, on warming, presumes upon notes of gingerbread; in the same vein the almonds defer to marzipan and the lemon pith is joined by nectarine and Mirabelle plum. Generous and precise at the same time; all that one should expect from a great wine from a great village (Le Mesnil-sur-Oger). Drink 2021 - 2028.

A comparative tasting of neighbouring vineyards, Les Montjolys and Les Chétillons reminds one of the tortoise and the hare. Les Chétillons is incredibly reserved at first, but with a little air and a little time, spring flowers take boom, then hawthorns and acacia appear and even a hint of white pepper calls from behind the chalky foundations. The wine grows on the palate too, and what starts as austerity slowly but surely is transformed by the rigour of an innate and enviable complexity. Drinking Window 2021 - 2030.

Disgorged in July 2021, Péters's just-released 2014 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is showing very well, unwinding in the glass with scents of ripe citrus fruits, crisp green and yellow orchard fruit, white flowers and subtle hints of freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, it's seamless and concentrated, its elegantly fleshy core of fruit underpinned by a racy spine of acidity and animated by a pretty pinpoint mousse; it concludes with a long, mineral finish. Readers will have a lot of fun comparing the 2014 with the more tightly wound 2013 in a decade's time. Drink 2023 - 2043.

The 2014 Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is fabulous. The 2014 is not as obvious as years like 2012 or 2013, but it presents a youthfully austere, classic personality that is absolutely beguiling. Readers will have to be patient here. There is certainly a lot to look forward to. The 2014 Les Chétillons is a Blanc de Blancs that sizzles with Mesnil tension and energy. Dosage is 3.5-4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: May, 2021. Drink 2024 - 2034.

The 2016 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Millésime L’Esprit de 2016 is lovely, wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, nectarine, white flowers, ripe citrus fruit and warm bread. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and precise, it's charming and fine-boned, with a pretty core of fruit, racy acids and a pearly mousse. Drink 2021 - 2038.

The 2016 Brut Cuvée Millésime L'Esprit is laced with the essence of tropical fruit, exotic white flowers and lemon confit. Intensely perfumed and radiant, the 2016 offers tons of near and medium-term appeal. This is an especially racy, aromatic, weightless edition of the Esprit. Dosage is 4.5-5.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: February, 2021. Drink 2021 - 2031.

Sourced from four of the great grand cru villages of the Côte des Blancs, L’Esprit is an archetype of a classy Chardonnay-based Champagne. Rodolphe identifies seasonal elements from each of the villages; steely wintery austerity from Le Mesnil, ripe summer generosity from Avize, spring flowers from Oger and autumnal hints of spice and sousbois from Cramant. Be that as it may, today the wine sings with great charm, its frothy billowing core silky and wonderfully elegant; notes of apple charlotte, praline and lemon pith are all evidenced and the finish is long and persistent, with a teasing twist of salinity. Drinking Window 2021 - 2026.

Fine and satiny in texture, this harmonious version offers lightly juicy acidity and flavors of dried cherry, whole-grain toast, spun honey and pickled ginger. Smoke-tinged finish.

The NV (2016) Rosé Albane is fabulous, but it needs at least several hours to truly blossom, as it is very reticent upon opening. Bright cranberry, mint, white flowers, chalk and sweet rose petal give the Albane striking aromatic nuance and tons of sheer appeal. What a pretty wine it is. The blend is 55% Chardonnay and 45% Meunier, done as a saignée.

    Antonio Galloni's Vinous (November 2020)

Based on the 2015 vintage and blending Péters's Chardonnay with a saignée of Pinot Meunier from René Geoffroy, the latest rendition of the NV Brut Rosé for Albane bursts with complex aromas of red apples, pomelo, fresh mint, licorice and shrimp shell. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, delicate and incisive, with a delicate phenolic presence and a sneakily persistent finish. Péters contends that the tannins of Pinot Noir would amplify the austerity of Le Mésnil, hence his decision to work with Pinot Meunier.

Very pretty pale orangey pink.Victoria plum fragrance. Light and fruity but with drive and length, and excellent freshness, showing well after the time in bottle and a fine fine grip on the finish.

The NV Brut Réserve Oubliée (base 2015 ) marries freshness, tension and the complexity that emerges from the perpetual reserve in this blend. Wonderfully complex and layered, with striking aromatic presence, the Réserve Oubliée has so much going on. Marzipan, dried flowers, mint, lemon confit and spice build in the resonant, creamy finish. Dosage is 4.5-5.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: December, 2020. Drink 2021 - 2030.

    Antonio Galloni's Vinous (Nov 2021)

The NV Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Réserve Oubliée is a blend of the best reserve wines from three different vessels: concrete, stainless steel and a 45-hectoliter oak vat from Franz Stockinger in Austria. The "forgotten reserve" shows a complex bouquet with bright and elegant fruit intertwined with notes of nuts, mocha and a touch of smoked speck. Aged sous liège (under natural cork), this is a very pure, fresh, fine, highly complex and energetic Champagne with a long, salty finish. A fascinating example and proof that top quality is also possible with nothing but reserve wines. Disgorged in November 2017 with a dosage of four grams per liter. Tasted at the domaine in April 2018.

Leesy pastry dough and marzipan notes are an aromatic entry for this creamy, layered Champagne, leading to flavors of baked plum, kumquat and anise. A subtle streak of smoky mineral and vivid acidity define the mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2025.

The 2008 Brut Cuvée Rare, now re-baptized as "Rare Champagne," continues to evolve at a glacial pace. Offering up aromas of citrus oil, freshly baked bread and wet stones, it's medium to full-bodied, taut and incisive, with a tangy spine of acidity and a pretty pinpoint mousse, but much in the way of texture or amplitude has yet to emerge. While I continue to think that this has the makings of a very attractive bottling, continued patience is advised. Drink 2023 - 2043.

Rich and complex nose of baked apricot, dried pineapple, praline, walnut, spiced pear and fig. Some nutmeg and smoky notes, too. It’s supple and creamy, with a broad array of ripe tropical and spiced fruit and salted-caramel undertones. Soft bubbles. Dry feel. 70% chardonnay and 30% pinot noir, mainly from the Montagne de Reims. 11 years on the lees, disgorged end of 2020. 10g/l dosage. Delicious now.

Rare Champagne boasts an illustrious past, with its first vintage having been presented to Marie Antoinette in 1785. The wine is produced in very limited quantities and is restricted to exceptional years, with only 11 vintages being declared over the past four decades of production. 70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir from selected grand cru vineyards. Simon Field MW: Gentle bead, lovely evolved notes of hazelnut, even a hint of praline, enrobed and ennobled by firm acidity and a persuasive finish. Alan Bednarski: Great, pure wine with still-fresh zesty flavours, delicate palate and sweet yeast notes, with a long flavourful finish of ripe melon. Tim Hall: A challenging, pressing start, wanting to overwhelm with shimmering and sharp attack, but shows intensity on the palate to match. Lovely lemon-apple notes and tempered texture. Drink 2021 - 2028.

Like a stallion out of the gate, this shows an initial explosion of power, in the form of mouthwatering flavors and fine texture, before quickly settling into an elegant gait. The racy acidity is seamlessly knit, buoying the lacy mousse and flavors of cassis, toasted brioche and tangerine, with accents of candied ginger, hazelnut and fleur de sel lingering on the long, creamy finish. Drink now through 2035.

The new release of this producer's prestige cuvée comes in its usual beautifully sculpted bottle. The Champagne, from a great vintage in the region, is just approaching maturity still showing minerality from the high amount of Chardonnay in the blend. Nutty flavors are creeping in, keeping the great texture adding complexity. Drink this very fine wine now although it will also age further.

A blend of 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% Pinot Meunier from the outstanding 2008 vintage, this superb Champagne was sourced from Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards and saw a minimum of 8 years on lees.
An exuberant mousse slowly subsides into a pale straw coloured base that has an exceptionally fine and very persistent bead streaming through it. Sophisticated and expressive the nose offers up citrus, chalk and yeast lees aromatics over baked bread, almond and emerging honeyed cashew like notes. Refined and sculptured with an airy feel the palate is layered with bright citrus and pear fruits which meld into yeast lees, toast, subtle honeyed cashew like characters, ginger and faint hazelnut. Dry, chalk tinged finish with taut like acidity evolving into a long elegantly creamed aftertaste.

Disgorged in March 2018, the 2008 Extra-Brut Vintage from Ployez-Jacquemart is showing brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with aromas of citrus zest, confit lemon, pear, brioche and mandarin. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with an incisive spine of acidity and a pearly mousse, the quality of the vintage here puts this on the same level as the house's two tête de cuvée bottlings in their portfolio of current releases. The blend is 50% Chardonnay, with the balance equal parts Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Drink 2020-2040.

Ployez-Jacquemart Rose is produced from a blend of 37% Pinot Noir, 13% Pinot Meunier and 50% Chardonnay grapes sourced from Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. A small amount of the red wine is vinified in oak.
A fine plentiful mousse holds well over a salmon pink tinged base that’s finely threaded by an exceptionally persistent stream of tiny bubbles. Inviting peach and winter strawberry scents intermingle with yeast lees, raspberry and subtle chalky mineral notes. Delightful winter strawberry and raspberry fruits burst across the mouth watering palate showing excellent intensity. Subtle yeast lees, ginger, sherbet and chalky mineral characters flow onto the dry refreshing finish. The crisp aftertaste long, gently textured and vivid. Delicious.

First produced in 2004 to celebrate the house’s 80th anniversary, the Passion Extra Brut is now one of the most popular in their range. Aged for at least 4-5 years on lees, its made from a blend of 44% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay and 18% Pinot Meunier with 25% of the wines matured in oak barrels.
A buoyant fluffy white mousse holds well over a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges. Finely threading the core is a persistent bead. Emanating from the glass are classic aromatics of yeast lees, citrus, baked bread and chalk tinged rocks which are complimented by hints of dried honey and brioche. Possessing both richness and breadth the well formed palate is brimming with baked bread, yeast lees and citrusy brioche like flavours that have a creamy like texture. Some lightly honeyed cashew rounds out the crisp refreshing finish that’s both long and refined.

Some 25% of the vins clairs that compose Ployez-Jacquemart's NV Extra-Brut Passion were barrel fermented, and it's a richer, more vinous non-vintage blend that's aged—for four or five years—sur pointes rather than sur lattes to prevent excess. Offering up an inviting bouquet of lemon, orange oil, crisp yellow orchard fruit, toasted nuts and honeycomb, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and intense, with a racy spine of acidity, fine concentration at the core, and a penetrating, sapid finish. The World’s Finest Champagnes Delivered to Your Door.

The sensation of fine bubbles dancing across the tongue elevates one's senses. Centuries ago, the Champagne sensation had already positioned itself with exclusivity, royalty and good times. Its relative scarcity ensured that the price was high and thus reserved for special occasions. Its connections with the lustful French Court ensured it remained the preferred drink of high rollers, a situation that seems to have persisted.

The place to shop when you need some bubbly for a special occasion.

Whether it's a birthday, anniversary or wedding, or perhaps just enjoying a glass of bubbly with some friends and family over dinner, you'll discover many of the finest options in our online store. Nicks Wine Merchants taste most of the Champagnes we offer and give a 100% money back guarantee.

Much of the art of great Champagne lies in blending: marrying wines from particular years, plots or grape varieties. Each grape variety has its own characteristics. Chardonnay gives wine with a greenish-gold tinge, refined and long on the palate; rather assertively crisp when young but more expansive once it has acquired its sparkle. Pinot Noir vinified as a white wine (not red as in Burgundy) gives a pale gold wine with a sustained but ingressive nose, full-bodied and generous - a wine for keeping. Meunier is slightly pink and lacks the backbone of Pinot Noir, but has a fruity, well-rounded flavour.
