Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

From the Coldstream Hills sub-region, this wine is from a range of clones, pressed into 500 litre French oak puncheons, where it matures for the best part of a year. The team use 20% whole bunches and the remaining 80%, whole berries. A vibrant crimson hue, there are notes of cherries, florals, raspberries and Asian spices. Finely balanced, fresh and with good energy, it offers a lovely seductive texture. Seamless in structure, there is serious persistence. Much to like here and it should provide immense pleasure over the next four to eight years. Drink 2025-2033.

These Wheeler wines are quite distinctive in style. Wheeling along on their own road, you could say. Peppery, rosy, poached strawberry and ripe cherry, green mango?!, shot through with orange rind, juniper berry and spice. Medium-bodied, has a peppery and amaro edge to it, dusty feel to the tannin, ripe strawberry, lively old spice cupboard thing going down on a finish of good length. Good to drink. Atypical in style, but I like it a lot. Drink 2020-2024+

Light yet rich and supple with an expansive flavour profile and long savoury finish.

William Downie is a pioneer of minimal-intervention, site-driven Pinot Noir in Australia. Based at Guendulain Farm in Yarragon, where he and wife Rachel Needoba planted a high-density 2-hectare vineyard in 2007, he also leases top sites like Bull Swamp and Camp Hill. Downie is known for his meticulous vineyard work and dedication to expressing place through Pinot Noir.
The Gippsland Pinot Noir is blend of fruit from the Matthews Vineyard in Berrys Creek and Guendulain Farm in Yarragon. Matthews, planted in 1998 to MV6 on red volcanic soils, is a cool, damp, dry-grown site producing dense canopies. Guendulain, established in 2008 with high-density plantings (10,000 vines/ha) of MV6 and Pommard clones, contributes structure and depth.

Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. Perfumed aromas of violet, red cherry, strawberry and clove entrance the olfactory senses with some earth, wild herb and spicy cedar notes also evident. Light in body but simultaneously rich and supple, the palate features expansive red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits over a subtle rhubarb, forest floor, spicy cedar and dried herb back drop. Outstanding power wave with polished tannins and a beautifully balanced freshness. The long, graceful conclusion, highly savoury.

Gee, I do love Gippsland pinot noir. This is beautifully modulated with a deeper, richer fruit profile, although it's far from fruity. In youth it simply shows more primary elements. A whorl of dark cherries, pips and black plums with pomegranate molasses, sweet spices and lots of autumnal fragrance – the earth and damp leaves. Lovely tannins, fresh acidity and, while it will last some distance, lovely now. Drink by 2036.

Light and energetic with delicious red fruits and a long, elegant finish.

Fruit for the Mornington Pinot Noir is sourced from two sites planted in 1998: Mrs Nicks Vineyard in Balnarring, with MV6 on south-facing sandy loam, and Rivendel in Merricks North, home to D5V12 and Pommard clones on grey loam.

Slightly cloudy red to dark red colour with a vibrant red hue. Fragrant violet, sour to red cherry and strawberry scents delicately infused with clove flourish through the nostrils trailed by some fresh herb, earth and spice notes. Delicious red cherry, bright red raspberry and winter strawberry fruits are underscored by lively acidity. Infusions of fresh herbs, light earth and spicy clove are also apparent. Light on its feet and energetic in its feel, it possesses excellent power and polished tannins. Finishes long, fresh and elegant.

One thing appealing with the pinots from Bill Downie is that they are immediately drinkable and deliciously so. Another difficult vintage on the Peninsula but this has a balance of aromas, flavours and texture. Dark red cherries, blood orange and zest with sumac and brown spices plus fresh herbs and a pinch of Italian bitter herbs, too. It’s a savoury wine. Tannins and acidity work in tandem to add definition across the mid-weighted palate. Drink by 2035.

Ethereal and floral, with fine tannins and a long, mountain-fresh palate.

Downie is known for his meticulous vineyard work and dedication to expressing place through Pinot Noir.
Planted in 1998 at 250m elevation, Camp Hill is the highest site between the Strzelecki and Great Dividing Ranges. Predominantly MV6 with some 115, the north-facing vineyard sits on rocky red volcanic soils, producing wines of finesse and delicacy. The 2024 release is richer than previous vintages, yet remains true to Camp Hill’s character—expect an aromatic and ethereal wine with a powerful palate and long fine tannins.

Almost shy at first, a flutter of mint and herbs, florals and spice, not much, all hinting at what’s to come. Mid-weighted, the palate strewn with dark fruit and spice, a slight green edge coming through – almost a mix of charred radicchio and green peppercorn, but not too much, so it does blend back into the wine. There’s a lot to enjoy but it will be even better in another year or so. Drink by 2033.

At least the suite of ’24 pinots turned up even if no information came with them. I do know Cathedral is made from fruit off several vineyards across the state. This is a tip-top offering – not too much of anything, just a balance of cherry fruit and pips, chinotto, wood spices and woodsmoke, a little autumnal too. Lovely perfume. Mid-weighted at best, the tannins supple, the acidity cleansing, and there’s good texture. A nice intro to the pinot world, according to Bill. Drink by 2032.

The intriguing 2023 Pinot Noir Gippsland, off volcanic soils, is classic Gippsland. It offers up layers of dark earth and spices (fennel seed and roasted star anise), well supported by a core of dark cherry and older oak. Despite the lower 12.5% alcohol, there is good upfront volume of flavor, softening through to spicy tobacco tones. It finishes with silky tannins and impressive length. Drink 2024 - 2030.

A danker, more resinous expression of medium-bodied pinot noir, befitting the volcanic soils of Gippsland. Darker than its Mornington sibling, exuding hints of blood plums, sarsaparilla and sandalwood along a frame of well-hewn woodsy tannins. Fragrant riffs on Damson plums and mossy underbrush, never straying into the red fruit and orange peel accents that can mark many wines from this maritime region. There was so much to love in this Pinot, from its complexity to its sapidity to its long length. With a ruby hue and a slight tinge of purple, it is bright in colour but also aroma, showing bountiful red cherry, strawberry, raspberry, confectionery, forest floor and musk. The palate is full of flavour yet it’s refined and not over the top, with the brightness of fruit carrying from the first sip to the last. A highly enjoyable wine.

Currently there is a significant generational shift happening in Burgundy, and these new names are seemingly better trained and better equipped to succeed than ever before. One of the most exciting of these new talents is Thibaud Clerget now heading up his family's Domaine Clerget. Based in Volnay, Thibaud represents the 28th generation of his family's winemaking history in Burgundy, and in a few brief vintages has created significant buzz. In true Burgundy tradition, Thibaud is equally as happy on the tractor in the vineyard as he is in the cellar, confident in taking on all aspects of the process. Since 2019 vintage the family holdings in Volnay and Meursault have been bolstered with further contract arrangements adding prime parcels such as Meursault Perrieres and Corton Grand Cru.

    Other Reviews....
Thet 2020 Corton Le Rognets Grand Cru comes from contracted fruit, though Thibaut Clerget manages the vineyard himself. It includes 40% whole bunch with 50% new oak. It has a well-defined, quite taut bouquet with blackberry, briary and light loamy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, vivid red berry fruit laced with orange zest, leading to a lively and focused finish. Excellent. Drink 2025-2045.

Thibaut runs the viticulture in this vineyard then buys the grapes. 50% whole bunch 50% new wood. Mid crimson, showing a very toasty and lactic style of new wood. Very juicy behind, the whole bunch is almost hidden but I suspect stretches out the finish nicely, and the fruit is not too ripe. Finishes very well, as long as the oak calms down. Actually very long.

This and La Cosette have virtually identical vinification the only difference an extra 3 days on skins and 7% new oak and this is 100% MV6 clone. Whatever, this is markedly more complex, with greater fruit depth and more savoury spice notes on the very long palate. Drink by 2027.

Matured in 500L puncheons for 8 months of which 17% was new oak. Magenta, where red and purple meet. This junction is where the wine fits. Violet and lavender perfume with red cherries and blackberries. Boysenberry and two tone mulberry. Plums skin and sangria. A base note of allspice and lifted sage leaf. Fruit doubles down on the palate with briary tones replaced with blackcurrant and blueberries. Befitting dusty tannins and once again a wine that refreshes the palate on the finish. A smart wine. Yeringberg is a historic Yarra Valley estate, first established in 1863 and now under the stewardship of the fifth generation of the de Pury family. Once one of the region’s most celebrated vineyards, production ceased in 1921 before being revived by Guill and Katherine de Pury in 1969. Today, winemaker Sandra de Pury leads the winery, working alongside her brother David who manages the vineyard. With some of the oldest vines in the Yarra Valley, Yeringberg continues to produce elegant, age-worthy wines that reflect both heritage and thoughtful custodianship.

From low-yielding, dry-grown Pinot Noir vines planted between 1969 and 1974, fermented fully destemmed with nine days on skins, then matured for 19 months in barrel with 38% new oak. The combination of old vines, low yields and extended elevage defines the style and structure of the 2023 release.

    Other Reviews....
Made from MV6 and an old clone from Great Western planted between ’69 and ’74. Fully destemmed and 38% new oak. A bright ruby red. Old vines, low yields and a cool year have produced another terrific Yeringberg pinot. Gently meaty with aromas of black cherry, blueberry, brown spices and lightly crushed violets. Concentrated, structured and long, this kept opening up with air, meaning that, while it can be approached now, you really want to have a bottle or three when it begins to hit its peak over the next five to 10 years plus. Drink 2026-2036.

The de Pury family have been farming in the Yarra Valley since 1863. Once a famed vineyard in the 19th century, the demise of fine table wines saw production cease in 1921. Guill & Katherine de Pury decided to replant the vineyard in 1969, gradually starting to rebuild the reputation of this historic estate. Today it is helmed by Sandra de Pury, becoming the fourth-generation winemaker at Yeringberg, with her brother David who manages the vineyard. Produced from some of the oldest vines in the Yarra Valley, the low-yielding vines result in wines of great age-ability and finesse.

Made from MV6 and an old clone from Great Western planted between 1969 and ’74. Crushed and destemmed with eight to 10 days on skins, 45% new oak. Bright crimson. Aromatically, I can't recall a prettier Yeringberg pinot. It's got delicate new season cherries, strawberries, rose petals and a little nutmeg spice. Gentle and sweetly fruited on entry, it's also earthy and structured with fine yet powerful tannins. Finishes long and with a touch of spice. This is destined to age well.

I've had wonderful experiences with this pinot in the past. Mid-weighted, yet of a darker cherry, danker brood. Sarsaparilla and damson, with hints of Chinese medicine cabinet. An exceptionally well wrought tannic kit, sinuous and long-limbed, auguring for a solid future. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Cherry, strawberry and rhubarb pie, dried roses, toasty spicy oak. It’s medium-bodied, has some savoury tobacco and toasted spice, red fruits, a light grainy grip to tannin, balanced acidity, and a finish of very good length. It feels young and a little bit chewy as at now, though I reckon it’s going to roll out and evolve beautifully. Certainly it’s one of the best Yeringberg Pinots I’ve tasted.

Made from vines planted 1969–1974. Fully destemmed, 19 months in barrel. A light–medium ruby red. Perfumed with an earthy, old-vine complexity and spices such as clove, cinnamon and nutmeg. Delicate raspberry and cherry fruit on the palate, with a subtle backbone of tannin ensuring this will age effortlessly over the next 5–10 years. Drink by 2031.

Yeringberg perhaps the champions of alt dry whites, and Cabernet, though their Pinot can be very good too. Far be it for me to typecast anyone, but I think CM would dig this wine.
Cherry, spiced strawberry, an ozone lift, some ham hock, spice and minty perfume. It’s medium-bodied, bacon bone and spiced strawberry, cool acidity, a sappy rhubarb tang, fine dusty tannin, with a juicy cranberry cut. Almond and strawberry, with a gently smoky finish of good length. It has a bit of frisson, and something of an Old Skool Yarra mulchiness, and almond paste. No shortage of character. Drink 2023 - 2026.

From vines planted 1969-1974. 35% new oak. No fining or filtration. I always find it pretty interesting that so many people clamor for Yeringberg and Mount Mary Pinot Noir, when it’s the Cabernet wines that are the superstars. Still, good news in a way, for sensible people.
Autumnal, savoury and kind of amaro-laced. I’m thinking poached strawberry, cherry, spice and cedar, with a distinct sappy/sour blood orange tang, fine-grained but firm tannin, and a fresh red-fruited finish of good length. Plenty of character. I like it. Drink 2022 - 2029.

There's more volume this vintage, yet it still retains the Yeringberg touch of elegance. Ripe plums and cherries, all sweet and tangy with blood orange, bitter herbs and woodsy spices. Fuller bodied with ripe tannins and good drinking now. Drink by 2038.

Semi translucent dark red colour with a light crimson red hue. A perfumed nose of dark cherries and strawberries gently overlaid by violets and subtle anise blossoms out of the glass. Notions of faint meaty characters, spicy cedar and fresh herbs follow on. Light in body with an elegant supple feel and plenty of freshness the palate possesses flavours of ripe red cherries and strawberries over meaty cedar, faint dried clove and subtle earth with a spicy and vibrant conclusion. Perfectly integrated fine grained tannins. Excellent power with a long ripe red cherry, strawberry, a subtle meatiness, faint dried clove and spicy cedar aftertaste.
    Cellar 6-8 years.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
