While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Like many of Te Mata's 2020 reds, this young pup needs a little time to open if drinking now. Once it does, there're elegant aromas of cherry and blueberry fruit, violets and roses, ground black pepper, cloves and a slight meatiness in a well-tucked bed of mocha oak. Tangy red fruit on the silky palate is tightly wound by fine tannins and lifted by a crunch of acidity. A unique Pinot that bears the Te Mata stamp of place, polish, freshness and structure. 2018 The Eyrie Vineyards The Eyrie Pinot NoirWillamette Valley, Oregon, UNITED STATES$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenClosure: CorkDavid Lett had been pioneering cool climate Pinots in the Willamette Valley since the mid '60s, when he relocated as a viticulture and enology graduate from U.C.Davis. Lett brought with him cuttings of Wädenswil, the only Pinot clone certified as virus-free at the time by U.C. Davis, paving the way for Pinots in Oregon as this clone is naturally suited to cool, wet climate and crafts very distinctive reds with a bright fruit character as well as spice and floral notes.
Nowadays The Eyrie Vineyards is made up of 26 hectares (all certified organic and dry-farmed) across five sites all in the Dundee Hills AVA and is run by Lett's son, Jason. A distinguishing point of these wines is the elegance and ability to be long-lived in the cellar, gaining further complexity over the years, even decades.Other Reviews....
Pale ruby, the 2018 Pinot Noir The Eyrie is a stunning wine with 10-15 years of aging potential. It has detailed scents of raspberries, blackberries, star anise, tangerine oil and violets, and it continues to unfold aromatically as it spends time in the glass. Delicately intense, it glides through the mouth like velvet, with seemingly endless flavor and nuance, and a finish that goes on and on. Drink: 2024-2039.

2024 The Wanderer Upper Yarra Valley Pinot NoirYarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$57. 99Bottle$695.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam CorkBest Pinot Noir - Yarra Valley Wine Show 2025
The Wanderer is the personal project of Gembrook Hill winemaker Andrew Marks, who draws on select sites across the Yarra Valley to craft wines that reflect both vineyard character and his own light-handed approach. It’s an outlet for Andrew to explore parcels beyond the family estate, with the Upper Yarra Pinot Noir sitting at the core of the range and underscoring the finesse that this cooler part of the region can deliver.
Sourced from a single vineyard in Yellingbo, a cooler site in the Upper Yarra, this wine captures the elegance and fine detail that Andrew consistently seeks in his work with Pinot Noir. Winemaking sees 20% whole bunches incorporated, and is matured in large format French oak (30% new) for a period of 11 months.

From a single vineyard in Yellingbo in the Upper Yarra; 20% whole bunches and 20% new oak. Bright crimson. Gently and beautifully perfumed. Aromas of alpine strawberry, pomegranate, fresh and dried rose and orange zest. There's lovely intensity of flavours through the mid-palate. The tannins are sleek and long. Drink now and over the next decade. Drink 2026-2034.

Philip Rich - James Halliday's Wine CompanionThis is another super release. Read everything you can about Australian pinot noir and then just go out and buy Wanderer and Gembrook Hill. Smoke, red cherries, fragrant herbs, undergrowth and graphite. The tension in this wine is electric; the finish is authoritative; the complexity is inherent and from the first sip to the last you are fully aware that you are in the hands of beauty. But this – at $58, remarkably – and you’re missing out on nothing. Drink 2026-2033+.

This is a terrifically attractive Pinot Noir. In brand-new-release terms I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen such an inherently complex, and settled, release under this label. It’s expressive of undergrowth and strawberry, ripe red cherry, orange oil, sweet spice and more; not quite Unami but certainly savoury. It’s set with acid-riven tannin, which suggests that it will age beautifully over the medium term or longer, but it’s already on song for drinking. Drink 2022-2028+

The fancier labels in the cream with red font. I tasted a brilliant suite of new releases with winemaker Andrew Marks a few weeks ago. A strong reminder of his prowess.
Savoury, earthy, slighly reductive/bitumen scents with dried rose petal and cranberry in the mix. Transparent feel in the palate, sour-ish cherry flavours, supple tannins, great length, understated and very elegant here with a rush of amaro-tinged acidity. It’s subtle, delicate but delivers the goods, particularly texture and detail. Sheesh, a good ‘un indeed.

2020 Thierry et Pascale Matrot Blagny La Piece Sous Le Bois Rouge Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
An ultra-fresh, cool and elegant mix of mostly ripe red berries is nuanced by a plethora of floral elements along with hints of anise and jasmine tea. I very much like the texture of the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that are suave but nicely delineated on the dusty and chalky finish that displays excellent persistence. This is really very good and the impression of refinement is aided by the dense but fine-grained tannins. One to consider. Drink through 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Blagny La Pièce Sous La Bois 1er Cru is very refined on the nose with perfumed red cherries, crushed strawberry and wild rose petal that blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy red cherries and strawberry, still with some new oak to be assimilated on the finish though that will be soaked up in time. A priori, afford this 3-5 years in bottle before broaching. Drink 2025-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousClear mid purple with a scintillating nose, this is a perfect rendition of 2020 red Burgundy at its best. The fruit is ripe but suave and pure, a few strawberry notes coming in, not too much acidity, refined tannins and great length.

The 2019 Blagny La Pièce Sous La Bois 1er Cru is fragrant and comely on the nose, offering pure red cherries mixed with red currant and wild strawberry, all quite sensual and well delineated. The palate is very well balanced with a vivid red cherry and strawberry entry, fine depth and impressive mineralité, This has tension to spare on the spicy finish. An outstanding Blagny that should give up to 18–20 years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Neal Martin - VinousMid purple, a little touch of oak accompanying the fruit on the nose, much more detail of fruit on the palate, very lively and nuanced. Nothing too rich nor ripe. There is plenty of volume here, if anything superior to the Volnay Santenots. Brilliant balance and very persistent. Understated, but just my type of wine.

An attractively perfumed and spicy nose is comprised mostly by notes of violet and dark cherry that are also trimmed in a touch of wood. The sleek, very fresh and intense flavors are tautly muscular before concluding in a detailed, powerful and mildly austere finale. Lovely. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Volnay Santenots 1er Cru has an intense nose of red cherries and wild strawberry, touches of incense emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, supple and lithe, leading to a slightly ferrous finish. Long in the mouth, it is not the most opulent Santenots, but I think that work in its favor. Drink 2023 - 2037.

Neal Martin - VinousFine mid purple. Sheer class on the nose while awaiting the detail. Richer deeper raspberry, worth spending time over this, slightly firmer tannins behind, but the quality of fruit wins the day. No more than medium bodied, yet a Volnay, which will give pleasure over many years.

A more restrained nose combines notes of ripe and fresh black raspberry, warm earth and wood toast. The delicious, round and plump medium weight flavors possess better mid-palate density while exhibiting touches of austerity and rusticity on the mildly warm finale. This should benefit from a few years of patience. Drink 2025+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundFrom two parcels, the 2019 Auxey-Duresses Rouge has a lucid ruby hue. The bouquet is quite high-toned and does not possess the refinement of the Monthélie. The palate is medium-bodied and a little chewy on the entry. One of the more rustic wines from the domaine, with a grippy finish. Drink 2022 - 2030.

Neal Martin - Vinous20% new wood. One plot next to Meursault, Boutonniers, since pulled out to plant in white, plus Heptures. Here the Matrots like to pick later to avoid rustic tannins. Dense purple, Elsa thinks the richer fruit covers the tannins better even though it cannot bring finesse. Certainly an excellent density here, but less finesse and a touch spicier, with white pepper.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
