Established in 1978 Stonier Vineyards was one of the pioneers on the Mornington Peninsula and has recently returned to being locally owned and run after a period of corporate ownership. The fruit for Stonier Pinot Noir is derived from a selection of estate and leased vineyards, the majority of which sit on the red volcanic basalt between Merricks and Red Hill. The high elevation (200m+) Red Hill vineyards are the primary component of this wine which provides the lovely lifted red fruit profile. Approximately 10% of the fruit was fermented as whole bunches with a 9 month maturation process taking place in French oak puncheons and barriques (10% new).
Translucent dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Alluring violet, red to dark cherry, strawberry and brambly rhubarb like scents effortlessly flow out of the glass followed by some dried herb, forest floor and light spicy cedar notes. Delivered with the varieties hallmark power and suppleness are delicious ripe cherry and strawberry fruits. Lending complexity to the back half are elements of rhubarb, forest floor, dried herbs and spicy cedar. Silky smooth tannins with all of the components seamlessly integrated with one another. Concludes long and savoury.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.
