Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

From the classic 2017 vintage on the Mornington Peninsula, Yabby Lake’s second label, Red Claw, is a model of consistency delivering fragrant aromatics, ripe berry fruit and a velvety feel.

Semi translucent bright red core with a light crimson red hue. Lifted aromatics of ripe cherries and strawberries show good intensity with hints of anise and spicy cedar following on. Delicious dark cherry and ripe strawberry flavours decorate the palate with traces of anise, vanillin cedar and spice also evident. Good power wave with a supple mouthfeel and velvety tannins. Moreish aftertaste of ripe cherries, strawberries, subtle anise and spicy vanillin cedar.

Hand-picked, open-fermented in stainless steel and wood vats, no whole bunches, pumped over and plunged after 10-14 days on skins, matured in French puncheons (15% new). Bright, light crimson; made with typical Yabby Lake precision; red fruit aromas plus touches of bramble and spice leads onto a vibrant red-berried palate with crisp, crunch acidity. This isn't OTT, simply conferring freshness of the wine and the promise of more complexity over the next 2-3 years. Drink by 2021.

The 2023 The Sabre Pinot Noir is all cherries and exotic spice, with lean, leafy characters on the mid-palate. This is a complex wine of presence and finesse, but with the 2024 Dagger so fresh in my mind, I can't help searching for some of that perfectly ripe, concentrated and yet capacious fruit that I tasted there. This is undoubtedly more complex and has cherry pip, aniseed, clove and iodine, so gravitate to what makes you sing. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2033.

This delicious, vibrant Pinot Noir is produced from four different clones planted in vineyards located at Gumeracha and Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills. 2023 was a cool and late vintage, fortunately with enough sunny days to develop ripe, intense flavours. Brimming with delicious red fruits it sees no oak in order to preserve freshness and purity.

A very moreish everyday drinking Pinot Noir.

Semi translucent bright red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Alluring scents of red cherries and strawberries infused with a combination of violets and fresh herbs sail through the nostrils with terrific intensity. Delicate rhubarb and spice notes ensue. Expansive and highly seductive, the palate is flooded with juicy red cherry, strawberry and anise flavours which overlay a subtle dried herb, forest floor and spice back drop. Boasting superb power and concentration for it’s price, it has a gorgeous silky feel, velvet smooth tannins and finishes long, fresh and spicy.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Sourced from the Gumeracha and Lobethal districts, this pours without pretension, light ruby in the glass, cherry fruit and tree-wood fragrance to get you interested. Then pure and straight Pinot flavour profiling with a little anise to add some spice. Bright and perky in the finish, with enough lingering Pinot forest-like earthiness to convince you it’s the real deal, even in its “lite” styling. Very drink-easy.

A fine Adelaide Hills Pinot, which offers excellent value, from a cracking vintage. Made from a combination of four different clones, the fruit is destemmed. A considerable percentage of whole berries has been used here. After pressing, the wine goes to stainless steel tanks before blending. The aim is a fresh, vital and youthful style, while the use of an array of clones adds to the complexity. The colour is a vibrant garnet. The aromas are fresh berry, some earthiness, fungal, animal hide, root vegetables and red berries here with hints of sarsaparilla. This is a slightly burly, flavour-first style. The palate exhibits some cold tea notes with decent length so there is no apparent reason why this won’t be providing pleasure for at least the next four years. Drink 2023-2027.

I’ve seen this Riposte The Dagger Pinot Noir 2022 down to as low as $19 a bottle. It’s a steal at that price. Buy buy buy!
Indeed, I judged with Tim Knappstein back in March and he was pretty happy with this Pinot too.
Bright raspberry juicy fruit aplenty in this Adelaide Hills Pinot – like biting into a raspberry! A bit of glacé raspberry, too, from some whole berry carbonic action. Juicy, varietal, no tannins, but so much lovely fruit. Just a little broad to finish. Lovely drink in the best way possible.

Just when I said that 2017 isn’t as good as it’s made out to be – this pops up. Amazing that it’s on the streets already.
This is a beauty. Textural, powerful, varietal and brilliant to drink. Dark cherries and plums, a tanginess, spice and peppercorn notes. It races about, delivering pleasure as it goes. Tannin is in emery board territory. Take the wine, the price, combine the two, and clearly this is right up there as one of the best value pinots of the year. Drink 2017-2023.

The 2020 Tinker's Field Mature Vine Pinot Noir is, as per usual, restrained on the nose but concentrated and driven in the mouth. This is a wine immune to hyperbole, and so eloquently of its place, that it is often a wine I am proud to show internationally. It never fails. The tannins are sleek but totally within the wine. The tannins are finely milled, ductile, gray in every respect and delicate but not brittle. The 2020 seems more open-armed than the 2019 before it (not better, not worse—just different), and it is making for pleasurable drinking here today. A beauty. The vines face north and are sheltered and protected behind Ruby Island. The vineyard is warm and on pure schist. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. Drink by 2023-2040.

The vines are east facing and close to the lake, with less afternoon sun (which means it isn't exposed to the extended heat of the afternoon). "There is clay down there which gives the tannins more mobility and animation," says Nick Mills.
The 2020 Emma's Block Mature Vine Pinot Noir leads with dehydrated cranberry, cherry blossom, graphite and dried star anise. The nose is exotic and restrained at once. This is the entree to the palate which is defined absolutely by the tannins that feel very much like they plume in the wine, like a drop of blood in water. These are wines to feel as much as they are to taste, and this is what helps them stand alone in this place. It’s superb, with unbroken form through the long finish—no strays, no rough edges, no breaks. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. Drink 2023-2035.

Very deep dark red core with a lighter shade of red to the hue. A perfumed potpourri of violets, dark cherries, winter strawberries, red plum and subtle anise drift from the glass with hints of sour cherries, forest floor and fresh herbs also evident. This is such profoundly complex pinot with violets, dark cherries, plums, blueberries, graphite, black tea, peppery nuances, licorice and woody spices, all taking a role on the nose. The palate has such density and precision, delivering a powerfully composed and profoundly concentrated core of blueberry and dark-cherry flavor in a layered and refined style. Such impressive depth and character. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

17% whole bunches and matured in French oak hogsheads (17% new). A light, bright ruby red. Attractive and pure fruited with aromas of vibrant red fruits, pressed flowers and a touch of spice. Equally good on the medium-bodied, energetic and very well-delineated palate. Silky and persistent tannins round out a lovely wine to drink now and over the next five to six years. Drink by 2029.

The first thing I noticed upon opening the bottle was a ripe, confectionery-like aroma that filled the room. After a bit of breathing, red cherry, strawberry, plum and black tea came forth to round out the delightful nose, with some stemminess obvious once you inspected the wine a bit closer. It had a juicy, salivating quality to it that made it very easy to drink up the bright, silky liquid, and it was even a touch better on the second night. Like the Chardonnay, it’s just as nice as a sipper or with food.

There's a wild strawberry sheen to the red cherry and raspberry notes that lie below. Cut with notes of exotic spice, apple skin, pomegranate, char siu, cinnamon oak spice, shiitake and blossom. So nicely composed. Just a touch of sour cherry, fern grove and game on the palate, pure and endearing berry fruits, pillowy tannins and lacy acidity, finishing with amaro-flecked red and dark fruits and game. Growing up in Healesville, a young Rob Hall did some summer work in the vineyards during the early to mid nineties before taking up full time work at Yarra Ridge then Punt Road. From 2002 to 2011 he was the winemaker at Mount Mary, it wasn’t until 2014 that he took the leap and began his own operation.
2024 was excellent year in the Yarra Valley, after a wet spring, summer came good with slow ripening days, resulting in lovely aromatics and wonderful intensity. This Pinot Noir was sourced from five vineyards – Harriet’s, Full Moon, Boat O’Craigo, Nenagh Park and Yarrawalla with only 10% of the Harriet’s component being whole bunch. Maturation was predominantly in seasoned hogheads and puncheons (300 & 500L).

Rich, powerful and expansive Yarra Valley Pinot that over delivers.

Semi translucent dark red core with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Exhibiting a perfumed like intensity, the nose is engulfed with dark cherry, violet, strawberry and subtle rhubarb scents. Anise, brambly dried herb, forest floor and spice notes also chime in to lend further interest. Expansive, concentrated and supplely textured, rich dark cherry and strawberry fruits unfold across the palate with terrific power. Extending through the back half are complexing notions of subtle rhubarb, traces of anise, brambly cedar, dried herbs, delicate forest floor and spice. Velvet smooth tannins impart a silken feel which carries right through to a long, incredibly moreish finish. This is Rob Hall in top form.

From Steve Sadlier's Nenagh Park vineyard in Yarra Glen. This spent three weeks on skins before being pressed to older hogsheads and puncheons. Bright ruby crimson. A pure fruited wine centred around perfectly ripened strawberries and raspberries with scents of peony and allspice. It's deceptive on the palate in that while it's light on its feet and quite delicious, it's also structured with a little orange peel and spice on the long finish. Terrific from beginning to end. Drink by 2030.

From the 1996-planted Harriet's vineyard in Healesville; 20% whole bunches, 50/50% matured in one- to three-year-old puncheons and seasoned hogsheads. A medium crimson ruby. Aromas of strawberries, satsuma plums, lightly poached rhubarb and a little potpourri. Still quite tightly wound, there's a lovely core of red and black fruits on entry before the compact and sturdy tannins kick in on the finish. The most backward and age-worthy of Rob Hall's trio of excellent single vineyard pinots from 2022. Drink by 2030.

Following on from the superb 2021 vintage in the Yarra Valley, 2022 was another excellent year although very low cropping. The slow ripening conditions producing wines with lovely aromatics and outstanding fruit intensity. This Pinot Noir was sourced from four vineyards – Harriet’s, Boat O’Craigo, Nenagh Park and Willowlake with only 10% of the Harriet’s component being whole bunch. Maturation was predominantly in seasoned hogheads and puncheons (300 & 500L).

Yet another highly moreish Pinot Noir from Rob Hall.

Dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a vibrant light red hue. Alluring and carrying a perfumed like intensity, aromas of violets, dark cherries, strawberries, subtle rhubarb, anise, forest floor, fresh herb and delicate spicy cedar entrance the olfactory senses. Silken in its feel the palate is layered with delicious dark cherry, strawberry and delicate rhubarb flavours that unfold across the palate like a peacocks tail. Adding further personality to the moreish fruit profile are notions of dried herbs, subtle forest floor and spicy cedar. Superb power wave of flavour with velvet smooth tannins, finishing long and supplely textured.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
