Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Goulots is the first to be completely biodynamically farmed, although Florence told me that she only really noticed the difference apropos the color of the grapes in the 2016 vintage. It has a complex bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry and blood orange, very focused with deftly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little meatiness/dried blood developing underneath the carapace of black fruit, white pepper and Moroccan spice towards the finish. I love the tension here, not powerful but it just has the energy you would not anticipate from such a warm season.

While the wood treatment is a bit more evident it still remains a background element on the ripe but airy nose of spicy, floral and earthy red berry fruit aromas. The elevation of the vineyards is especially noticeable in a ripe vintage like 2015 as the medium weight flavors display plenty of minerality and a racy energy that carries over to the saline finish that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins. Lovely juice.

Domaine Hubert Lignier is one of Burgundy’s finest addresses, producing wines that show profound depth, complexity, and structure with capacity for wonderful development in the cellar. Winemaking is quite traditional, with grapes being de-stemmed and fermented in open-top cement tanks with natural yeasts. Elevage is around 18 months for the Bourgogne and village wines, while the premier and grand cru wines remain in barrel for 20-24 months. All wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

Here there is that peculiar type of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis. By contrast there is good verve and a really lovely texture to the nicely voluminous flavors that display noticeable rusticity on the youthfully austere, firm and lingering finish. Like several wines in the range, this will need to add depth but if it does, it could be really quite lovely. Drink through 2030+.

A blend dominated by climat Sous la Velle, the 2020 Monthélie 1er Cru reveals aromas of blackberries, cassis and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and ample palate that's seamless and penetrating. This is a fine success.

Half a hectare, mostly in Sur Lavelle along with a few rows in Barbières and Vignes Rondes. 10 barrels this year. This cuvée will be just Sur Lavelle from 2021 with the rest going into the village wine. Fine mid purple, barely reduced, a little bit of blackcurrant leaf maybe. A certain sucrosity on the palate but this is a Monthelie which will give a lot of pleasure. 13.7% alcohol.

Ripe and brooding aromas grudgingly display notes of poached plum, spice, a variety of floral elements and earth that are trimmed in admirably discreet wood. The dense, powerful and tautly muscular medium weight plus flavors exude evident minerality on the impressively complex, persistent and serious finale. This is excellent plus it's a wine that always ages well, almost irrespective of vintage. Drink through 2032+.

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots wafts from the glass with aromas of red berries, cherries, baking spices, orange rind and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, it's layered and seamless, with powdery tannins, bright acids and a long, saline finish.

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru has (another) very well defined bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry and sous-bois aromas, a little stemminess in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, impressive depth, but what underpins this premier cru is the freshness and tension on the finish. It should age with style. Superb. Drink 2025-2048.

This slightly south facing vineyard is being farmed biodynamically and in 2020 produced 5.5. barrels in half a hectare. Rich deep purple, the nose is a little bit less accessible, a little bit stricter, than La Riotte, offering some blackcurrant and dark raspberry, then packs a real punch at the back, with still darker fruit, pierced by a saline note at the crunchy finish. Quite different in character all the way through. 13.85% alcohol.

This is also wonderfully spicy with its very fresh aromas of black cherry, raspberry, exotic tea, hoisin and anise wisps. The mouthfeel of the broad-shouldered flavors is again highly seductive yet serious as the very firm finale is dusty and somewhat raspy where a touch of warmth eventually emerges. As noted, this is extremely firm and is going to need a very long snooze in a cool cellar before it reveals its full potential. Drink 2039+.

The much more restrained nose is strikingly spicy and offers an extensive range of floral elements on the red and dark berry fruit aromas that are cut with Asian-style tea wisps. The broad-shouldered and concentrated flavors are ultra-refined yet exceptionally powerful and almost painfully intense while offer stunningly good length on the graceful and classy finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. Mugnier's 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is just being released, but readers should take its eight years of cellaring at the domaine as a statement of intent rather than a sign to start pulling corks on reception, as the wine is still very far from maturity. Unwinding in the glass with scents of dark berries, orange rind, exotic spices and a deft framing of new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a hugely concentrated core of fruit that reflects the year's low yields, lively acids and supple but abundant structuring tannins, it concludes with a long, palate-staining finish. Drink 2028-2065.

The latest to be released is the 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru. I vividly recall tasting this with Mugnier in the barrel cellar after the dramatic frost-afflicted season. To refresh your minds, allow me to reproduce the relevant paragraph from that year’s in-barrel report. Mugnier explained: “There were three barrels of young vines, pruned as Cordon de Royat, which suffered limited damage from frost, and three barrels of older vines, pruned as Guyot, that were very badly hit. The former, regardless of the age of the vines, was tasting much denser and had a greater length than the latter. The final blend of Musigny includes all three barrels of the young vines plus one of the old ones, in order to bring a touch of freshness. The two remaining barrels were blended with the Chambolle Premier Cru Les Plantes and the few grapes from Combe d’Orveau to form the Chambolle-Musigny Trente-Deux, so called after the number of vintages that I have made.”
I have re-tasted the 2016 once in bottle, blind at the Burgfest tasting, where it flirted with perfection. Nothing has changed since then. Mugnier poured the wine in November 2023 after tasting his 2022s (bottles have not been labeled, hence the photograph of the cork). The nose is stunning. There’s incredible purity and intensity, fabulous delineation and a sense of exuberance as it doles out red berry fruit, fresh black truffle shavings and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied, with svelte tannins, poised and precise, gently building toward a seamless finish. It represents a heavenly evocation of one of the world's greatest vineyards. Drink 2024-2060.

Fine mid purple in colour. A very appealing fresh deep red fruit on the nose, quite restrained. Then a bombshell explosion of rich ripe sweet fruit, with just enough acidity at the back. It grows and develops very well, not the most blockbuster of Musignys but finely balanced. This has come on tremendously since tasted in barrel. Indeed only 4 barrels are being bottled as Musigny, with 2 declassified after the frost.

An exuberantly fresh nose features notes of grapefruit, green apple and a whisper of spice. There is both excellent volume and mid-palate density to the delicious and vibrant medium weight flavors that conclude in a tangy, nicely dry and refreshing finale. The 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is more overtly structured from bottle than I perceived from barrel, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries, vine smoke and earthy spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, taut and chalky palate that will reward some patience. The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has a pretty, floral nose with pressed rose petal filtering through the red fruit. Transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, light for a Premier Cru yet quite vivacious with finely chiselled tannins towards the tart finish. Will be difficult to resist young. Drink 2024-2034.

This Nuits-Saint-Georges has an astonishingly expressive nose of sour cherries, pomegranate and blood orange, the oak almost completely masked by these aromas. The marriage of ripeness and vibrancy, fine tannins and stony acidity is very impressive. Interesting touch of liquorice at the long, bright and focused finish.

A light to medium purple. Mugnier elegance meets the Maréchale, so this is more in fruit than flowers after the ethereal Chambolle. There is enough depth of fruit here, both on the nose and palate, followed by a fresh finish, fruit plus acidity with also a light tannin or two. Drink from 2026-2032.

Mugnier’s nearly ten-hectare monopole at the southern extreme of Prémeaux-Prissey has suffered in recent years: hail in 2018, coulure in 2019, drought in 2020, and frost in 2021. It has produced a bit more than half a normal harvest this year, but what is left is lovely indeed, with lush, pretty aromas of raspberry with floral notes and a delicate, supple texture on the palate that is ethereal yet oddly persistent. It is far from the most structured in the portfolio but is among the most approachable. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Athets is quite backward on the nose with blackberry, undergrowth and touches of ink coming through with aeration. Dense purple black. This is usually the outstanding cuvée and once again the nose promises very well, Dark fruit, concentrated but not too ripe, a little bit of black cherry, then some ripe strawberry, easily enough fruit to surround the tannins, just the right acidity. This is more elegant still with its overtly floral array of essence of ripe red cherry that is nuanced by a hint of exotic tea. Tasted from barrel, unracked, so rather reduced. This soon blows off. 30% whole bunch vinification. Another imperial purple and a robust but very intense bouquet. Inky depths here, this is a pretty intense wine with sucrous raspberry fruit and excellent length.

Dense dark purple. Powerful plums, a graphite note as well, significant density, the fruit swells right across the palate, a huge volume but the ripeness is perfectly judged, with an excellent length. This is very impressive. Revelling in the warmer vintage because the tannins are riper.

This is made mostly from Chatelots with a touch of Feusselottes. Fresh mid purple, the nose is not leaping out at first. Excellent intensity behind, a firmer style of Chambolle as Chatelots dominates. Good length and enough acidity to balance.

Somber and inexpressive aromas of various dark berries, earth, the sauvage and pretty floral wisps introduce the acceptably dense but attractively textured medium weight flavors that possess unusually good refinement for a young Clos de Vougeot, all wrapped in a youthfully austere finish that flashes impressive depth and persistence. While this quality effort will need 12 to 15 years to reach its apogee, it's not so structured that it couldn't be enjoyed at around 7 to 8 years of age. Drink from 2031+.

Rich deep crimson to purple colour, again with a quieter nose, but it is balanced and not over ripe. Indeed, there is a crispness to the raspberry fruit at the front end, opening out to a fleshier finish as the oak adds its two bits worth. Well organised wine which will need time to develop personality.

Once again, the nose is firmly reduced and in need of aeration. There is good verve and detail to the lighter weight (though not dilute) flavors that possess good flavor authority while delivering reasonably good length on the moderately rustic finale. Note that my rating assumes that the nose will gradually clean up with aging. Drink from 2026+.

Rich purple colour. Like Les Vignottes, this is in a rich style if dark fruit, with a thread of fresh acidity running through the middles adding a cranberry note.

Here too there is enough reduction at present to mask the underlying fruit so I would again recommend a thorough aeration if you're not planning to cellar this. Much more interesting are the much finer medium weight flavors that are at once lilting but serious, all wrapped in a compact finish that really tightens up as it sits on the palate. This is attractive in its fashion though I wouldn't describe it as especially Chambollesque. Drink from 2031+.

Mostly from Chatelots with a touch of Feusselottes, enough for 5 barrels in a good year. Intense purple with very primary fruit. Red and black fruit flavours are vying with each other, there is good acidity behind, with a little touch of reduction. Needs longer to integrate.

An intricately layered nose combines notes of red and dark cherry and plum with those of earth and underbrush. The initial palate impression of the medium weight flavors seems somewhat light but as they sit in the mouth the weight and power pick up and particularly so on the energetic and well-detailed finish that is less austere than usual. This balanced effort is also quite firmly structured and may well require up to 20 years of aging to completely resolve the supporting tannins. Drink from 2036+.

Two plots, both at the top. That which came from the Confuron family is trained in gobelet fashion to reduce vigour, while the Noëllat plot has a much better selection of pinot plant material and old vines. Glowing red purple. Back to the primary grape style of nose, otherwise quite backward. Needs more barrel time. Huge weight of fruit, dark cherry coulis, in the mouth. Nicely balanced on the palate, some elegance.

A highly spiced nose features notes of cassis, plum, hoisin and a hint of sandalwood. The ripe, mouth coating and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess excellent length on the well-balanced if youthfully austere finish that also really firms up as it sits on the palate. This is definitely a "buy and forget you own it" wine as I would advise not touching a bottle for at least 10 years and 15 to 20 would likely be better. Drink from 2036+.

The vines date back to 1926. Rich dense black purple, the nose immediately gives a sense of weight and of distinction. Quite muscular but in addition to, rather than at the expense of, finesse. There is a fine succulent fruit and a sense of harmony. I can see the wood a touch though at the back, though Louis says this is a recent and passing phenomenon.

Thomas Bouley is very much the insiders secret, more famous with his fellow vignerons than with collectors chasing the next 'superstar' seen on social media. That Thomas resists putting his name on the front label of his wines (preferring to keep his father's) is typical of his humble and low key approach. Based in Volnay may also add to his relative anonymity, however we suspect this is changing rapidly as word gets out of just how spectacular his wines are, and of the continual improvement seen since he began working with his father in the early 2000's.

Meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery are notable here, and key to why Thomas is so highly regarded by his peers. Yields are moderate, and in the cellar whole cluster ferments are used more with his clay rich sites (Pommard Fremiers, Volnay Clos des Chenes), while those with thin white soils (Pommard Rugiens-Hauts, Volnay Caillerets) are largely destemmed. New oak use is minimal, and each wine spend two winters on fine lees before bottling.

    Other Reviews....
Aromas of raspberries and plums mingled with hints of orange rind, sweet spices and forest floor introduce Bouley's 2019 Volnay Village, a medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless wine that's lively and penetrating, concluding with a long, saline finish. As I've written before, this cuvée blends the rich, clay soils of lieux-dits Poisots, Famines and Cros Martin with the thinner, whiter soils of Ez Blanches above the Clos de Chênes; but in 2019, the wine's tone is set by Ez Blanches, even if it only amounts to one-third of the blend. A firmly reduced nose does not allow any nuance to be appreciated. More interesting are the racy and almost painfully intense tautly muscular flavors that possess plenty of minerality that imparts a refreshing salinity on the linear, austere, compact and tightly wound finish. The 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens has also turned out very well indeed, mingling aromas of cherries and red berries with hints of licorice, forest floor and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, bright and precise, it's mineral and fine-boned, reflecting its origins in the thinner, calcareous soils of Rugiens-Hauts that have little in common with the iron-rich clays of Rugiens-Bas. Long and penetrating, it's beautifully refined. Drink 2026 - 2055.

Rich and gourmand, the 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Fremiers has gained in aromatic range since I tasted it last year, mingling aromas of wild berries and plums with hints of peonies, musk, blood orange and exotic spices. The 2018 Pommard les Fremiers 1er Cru is located just below the lieu-dit of Les Rugiens-Bas at the bottom part of the slope, on red soils. Its 43-year-old vines tend to produce small bunches. It has a well-defined bouquet with red berry fruit, dark chocolate and truffle aromas emerging from the glass. Just below Rugiens-bas. Light red soil. Medium deep crimson in colour, with quite a lifted nose, some whole bunch I think - 50% stems it turns out. Deep dark cherries, prettily perfumed, helps provide energy all the way through. Fine long finish. Interestingly, the stems take away the Pommard and leave the Fremiers!

Dense purple centre. A high-class nose, albeit quite discreet at first. Thomas felt that his Clos des Chênes used to be on the massive side before he tamed it with some whole bunch vinification.

Aromas of wild berries, dark chocolate, sweet spices, licorice and rose petals preface the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, a full-bodied, ample and layered wine that's rich, powerful and gourmand, with a ripe core of fruit, powdery tannins and succulent balancing acids. It's a compelling success, but it will reward some bottle age. Drink 2030 - 2055.

Wafting from the glass with notes of sweet cherries, strawberries, vine smoke, raw cocoa and spices, the 2020 Pommard Village is medium to full-bodied, cool and layered, with terrific depth at the core and a lively spine of acidity that carries through the long, saline finish. As usual, the blend is dominated by the cool, northeasterly exposures of the windy lieu-dit of Valmuriens. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Louis Boillot in concert with his wife Ghislaine Barthod and their son Clément Boillot-Barthod manage a fabulous array of old-vine vineyards in both the Cotes de Nuits and Cotes de Beaune. Whilst this Burgundian ‘red-royalty’ family hold no Grand Cru vineyards they turn out some of the most beautiful red Burgundy along the Cote d’Or.

Here there is a particular kind of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis, or black currant blossom; this kind of reduction tends to dissipate easily though it does dominate the fruit when it's present. The refined and highly energetic flavors possess a lovely mid-palate texture with plenty of minerality while exhibiting good persistence on the somewhat skinny and lean finish. This may well flesh out with a few years of bottle age and my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2025+.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles is a touch more reserved, unwinding to reveal a brooding bouquet of cherries, berries, dark chocolate, grilled meats and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, lively and precise, it's concentrated and introverted, with powdery structuring tannins and a mineral finish.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru has a pretty bouquet of vivacious red currant, raspberry and crushed strawberry fruit, along with light rose petal notes and hints of quince and orange pith. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins, and a keen thread of acidity lends real tension and precision toward the finish. This is one of Boillot’s best 2018s. Drink 2023-2038.

Here there is a lovely elegance to the cool, high-toned and airy aromas of spicy red berry fruit. There is better energy to the delicious saline-inflected flavors that culminate in a markedly firm, youthfully austere and very serious finish. At least 5 or more years of patience is strongly recommended as this will definitely need time. Drink from 2031+.

The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards has turned out especially well. Opening in the glass with aromas of red berries and plums mingled with sweet soil tones, hints of raw cocoa and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with terrific concentration and beautifully refined tannins. Boillot observes, and I agree, that this site's tannins have become much more refined over the last five years. Drink 2025 - 2045.

The 2019 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru immediately hits a level up from Les Angles, offering scents of vibrant red berry fruit, sous-bois and a hint of morels, all delineated and focused. There is much more brightness and energy on the palate of black plum, raspberry and allspice, leading to a nicely structured, quite peppery finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. Mid purple with a clean, pure, little-red-fruit nose. Finely balanced fruit right across the palate, more coherent today than Les Angles. Impressively persistent, in fact, and there are no dry tannins.

A pure and airy combination is composed by notes of essence of red cherry along with those of earth, pepper and a hint of the sauvage. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnets 1er Cru, which sees no new oak, is very delineated on the nose of intense blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, demonstrating fine mineralité at this early stage. Whiffs of herbal tea and spice add breadth to the cool, ripe and well-layered nose of various dark berries along with ample amounts of earth and sauvage nuances. There is excellent punch suffusing the succulent but powerful medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before terminating in an almost painfully intense and hugely long finish. I really like the texture as this is generous yet very clearly constituted for extended cellaring. As it often is, this is the best wine in the range and with the most development potential. Firm reduction once again overshadows the fruit. An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
