While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. The Gippsland Pinot Noir is blend of fruit from the Matthews Vineyard in Berrys Creek and Guendulain Farm in Yarragon. Matthews, planted in 1998 to MV6 on red volcanic soils, is a cool, damp, dry-grown site producing dense canopies. Guendulain, established in 2008 with high-density plantings (10,000 vines/ha) of MV6 and Pommard clones, contributes structure and depth.Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. Perfumed aromas of violet, red cherry, strawberry and clove entrance the olfactory senses with some earth, wild herb and spicy cedar notes also evident. Light in body but simultaneously rich and supple, the palate features expansive red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits over a subtle rhubarb, forest floor, spicy cedar and dried herb back drop. Outstanding power wave with polished tannins and a beautifully balanced freshness. The long, graceful conclusion, highly savoury.

Gee, I do love Gippsland pinot noir. This is beautifully modulated with a deeper, richer fruit profile, although it's far from fruity. In youth it simply shows more primary elements. A whorl of dark cherries, pips and black plums with pomegranate molasses, sweet spices and lots of autumnal fragrance – the earth and damp leaves. Lovely tannins, fresh acidity and, while it will last some distance, lovely now. Drink by 2036.

One thing appealing with the pinots from Bill Downie is that they are immediately drinkable and deliciously so. Another difficult vintage on the Peninsula but this has a balance of aromas, flavours and texture. Dark red cherries, blood orange and zest with sumac and brown spices plus fresh herbs and a pinch of Italian bitter herbs, too. It’s a savoury wine. Tannins and acidity work in tandem to add definition across the mid-weighted palate. Drink by 2035.

Almost shy at first, a flutter of mint and herbs, florals and spice, not much, all hinting at what’s to come. Mid-weighted, the palate strewn with dark fruit and spice, a slight green edge coming through – almost a mix of charred radicchio and green peppercorn, but not too much, so it does blend back into the wine. There’s a lot to enjoy but it will be even better in another year or so. Drink by 2033.

Matured in 500L puncheons for 8 months of which 17% was new oak. Magenta, where red and purple meet. This junction is where the wine fits. Fruit doubles down on the palate with briary tones replaced with blackcurrant and blueberries. Befitting dusty tannins and once again a wine that refreshes the palate on the finish. A smart wine. The vines are meticulously managed using precision viticulture technology and careful handwork to ensure the highest quality fruit reaches the winery and, ultimately, the bottle.
Their flagship "Reserve" Pinot Noir is produced only in the best years, using the finest parcels of fruit. The Reserve wines represent the pinnacle of their efforts, capturing the essence of variety, viticulture, location, season, and winemaking in its purest form.Other Reviews....
The 2021 Pinot Noir Reserve is very appealing as it delivers energetic red and dark cherry aromas, with a gentle dusting of violets and dried herbs. Fleshy and mouth-filling, there is a hearty core of earthy/mushroom flavors and old spices, al-dente tannins providing some support. Gravelly minerality adds a savory counterpoint that lingers through to the finish. This needs at least a couple of years to settle. Drink 2025 - 2031.

Once a famed vineyard in the 19th century, the demise of fine table wines saw production cease in 1921. Today it is helmed by Sandra de Pury, becoming the fourth-generation winemaker at Yeringberg, with her brother David who manages the vineyard. Produced from some of the oldest vines in the Yarra Valley, the low-yielding vines result in wines of great age-ability and finesse.

Made from MV6 and an old clone from Great Western planted between 1969 and ’74. Crushed and destemmed with eight to 10 days on skins, 45% new oak. Bright crimson. Aromatically, I can't recall a prettier Yeringberg pinot. It's got delicate new season cherries, strawberries, rose petals and a little nutmeg spice. Gentle and sweetly fruited on entry, it's also earthy and structured with fine yet powerful tannins. Finishes long and with a touch of spice. This is destined to age well.

Cherry, strawberry and rhubarb pie, dried roses, toasty spicy oak. It’s medium-bodied, has some savoury tobacco and toasted spice, red fruits, a light grainy grip to tannin, balanced acidity, and a finish of very good length. It feels young and a little bit chewy as at now, though I reckon it’s going to roll out and evolve beautifully. Certainly it’s one of the best Yeringberg Pinots I’ve tasted.

In 2014 Caroline took her share of some family vineyards from her father Jean-Marc and created her own domaine based in Chassagne-Montrachet, working out of brand new cellars built for Caroline and her husband.
For her first vintage in 2014 she had small holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet for both red and white together with small holdings in Santenay and Hautes Cotes de Beaune totaling just 2.4 hectares. With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.

In 1994, having previously done six month internships with Henry Jayer and Domaine Drouhin, Oregon, Jean-Marie Fourrier took over the domaine from his father Jean-Claude who had been working the vines since the early age of just fourteen. Upon inheriting these vineyards he was keen to move away from his fathers methods of blending all grapes from their many vineyards together, to showcasing each on their own. The results of all this meticulous work are very appealing wines, each of which shows the character of its provenance clearly.
All the wines, whether village or grand cru, are matured in 20% new oak, the idea being to keep renewing the barrel cellar rather than to influence the fruit with any barrel flavours. The wines are not racked at all until transferred to tank about two months before bottling in the spring, eighteen months after harvest.

Maturation took place in 1-3 year old French oak barrels for 6 months. Following on from the 2019 vintage, 2020 was another very low yielding year, the Great Southern region experiencing its driest winter and spring in 100 years. These dry conditions continued throughout Summer until good rainfalls in February provided much needed moisture. Compensating the low crop levels was fruit of exceptional quality.
Ad Hoc’s Cruel Mistress continues its run of hot form, making it one of the best value Pinots out there.
Semi translucent dark red colour with black tinged edges and a bright light red hue. Alluring and highly fragrant the nose offers up aromatics of violets, dark cherry and strawberry which intermingle with hints of anise, forest floor and spicy cedar. Making a supple entrance onto the palate are delicious dark cherry and ripe strawberry fruits which are carried by an excellent power wave. Notions of anise, vanillin cedar, forest floor and spicy dried clove flow onto the back half. Silky tannins combine with ample freshness to form a long intensely flavoured finish.

60/40% whole berries/bunches; pressed to older French oak and stainless steel. A light cherry red. Crushed red berries, a little blood orange and some herbal notes can all be found in this brightly fruited and immediately appealing wine. There's a nice touch of grip on the palate, too, giving the wine shape and ensuring it will still be looking good three to four years from now. Drink by 2027.

I love a wine that’s made for drinking pleasure first and foremost, and these Airlie Bank wines have that goal set firmly in their sights, or more specifically, perky-faced winemaker Tim Shand does.
Nuts, cherry, raspberry, a little spice and sap. Fresh, bright, straight-down-the-line and juicy, some fresh strawberry acidity flavour and brightness on the finish, along with a gentle rasp of tannin. In some respects, has the easy drinking appeal of a bigger rosé, if you take my meaning. Regardless, it’s fun and very good to drink. And it’s nearly springtime, as I write. Spot on. Drink 2019-2022+
