Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

2024 The Wanderer Upper Yarra Valley Pinot NoirYarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$57. 99Bottle$695.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam CorkBest Pinot Noir - Yarra Valley Wine Show 2025
The Wanderer is the personal project of Gembrook Hill winemaker Andrew Marks, who draws on select sites across the Yarra Valley to craft wines that reflect both vineyard character and his own light-handed approach. It’s an outlet for Andrew to explore parcels beyond the family estate, with the Upper Yarra Pinot Noir sitting at the core of the range and underscoring the finesse that this cooler part of the region can deliver.
Sourced from a single vineyard in Yellingbo, a cooler site in the Upper Yarra, this wine captures the elegance and fine detail that Andrew consistently seeks in his work with Pinot Noir. Winemaking sees 20% whole bunches incorporated, and is matured in large format French oak (30% new) for a period of 11 months.

This is another super release. Read everything you can about Australian pinot noir and then just go out and buy Wanderer and Gembrook Hill. Smoke, red cherries, fragrant herbs, undergrowth and graphite. The tension in this wine is electric; the finish is authoritative; the complexity is inherent and from the first sip to the last you are fully aware that you are in the hands of beauty. But this – at $58, remarkably – and you’re missing out on nothing. Drink 2026-2033+.

An all but imperceptible touch of wood easily allows the pretty and attractively fresh aromas of red and dark cherry, humus and newly turned earth to shine. The rich and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess a velvety mid-palate texture while offering good if not distinguished length on the rustic finale. Drink through 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Auxey-Duresses Rouge comes mainly from the lieu-dit of "Les Heptures". The bouquet is richer, more opulent than the Monthélie, well defined red cherries and wild strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh with gentle grip on the linear finish that has lovel sapidity. Very fine. Drink 2024-2036.

Spicier aromas include those of red cherry coulis, plum, more discreet earth and pretty floral nuances. There is fine density to the medium-bodied flavors that are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the firm, serious and built-to-age finale. This will need to add depth to achieve the upper end of my projected range, but the potential appears to be present. Worth checking out. Drink through 2030+.
90-93 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Volnay Santenots 1er Cru was the first vineyard harvested and even so, I feel this is the one cuvée with suggestions of slight sur-maturité. The palate is medium-bodied pliant tannins, quite sweet and candied, fleshy with wild strawberry, raspberry and white pepper towards the finish. Fine, but I think Matrot’s Maranges La Fussière is better. Drink 2025-2045.

Neal Martin - VinousOne plot in Santenots Blancs, otherwise ‘sous le camping’ which is Les Plures. Not as dense in purple as the village Meursault. Not quite the density, softer at the finish, lower acidity, attractive but not quite convincing.

As usual including some declassified premier cru fruit, Glantenay's 2022 Volnay Village wafts from the glass with aromas of rose petals, sweet berries and cherries, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and suave palate that's layered, pure and harmoniously balanced.

This site can ripen rapidly, but Glantenay appears to have picked the 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots at the perfect date, delivering a medium to full-bodied, velvety and harmonious wine evocative of sweet cherries, dark berries, licorice and spices. Supple and seamless, with sweet, powdery tannins, it will offer a broad drinking window.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The 2022 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru was completely de-stemmed as Glantenay finds that the terroir already provides sufficient tannins. The nose is delineated and focused with blackberry, bilberry and light oyster shell scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. The 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is the ripest, most dramatic wine in the cellar, as is often the case, bursting with aromas of cherries, plums, spices and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and voluminous palate, with a sweet core of fruit framed by rich structuring tannin.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The 2022 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru contains 25% to 30% whole bunches this vintage. The energetic bouquet offers redcurrant and raspberry fruit, fine mineralité and tension. Hints of black truffle shavings emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There’s a liberal sprinkling of black pepper here, the stem addition perhaps the most tangible amongst the cuvées yet commensurate with the fruit concentration. Whole bunches (50%), gentle handling with no pumpovers or plunging. Matured in seasoned French barriques. Excellent wines from Thousand Candles in 2021, thoroughly deserving of the Best Small Producer trophy they picked up at the 2022 Yarra Valley Wine Show. A bright crimson red. A gently textured wine that was made with respect for the fruit with real persistence and finesse. There's lovely purity to the aromas of red cherries, small, wild strawberries, violets and spice. 2023 Wantirna Estate Lily Pinot NoirYarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIAReduced from $110.00$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 13.6%Closure: Stelvin2025 marks 62 years since the first vines were planted at Wantirna Estate, established in 1963 on an east-facing slope in Melbourne's southeastern outskirts. Once a mix of orchards, bush, and grasslands, the vineyard thrives today under the care of Maryann, Reg's daughter, though Reg remains actively involved. The wines, named after his four grandchildren, feature labels illustrated by Michael Leunig, reflecting each grandchild's personality, a heartfelt touch to this family-run estate.
The vineyard's three distinct Pinot Noir blocks, covering just ten acres, are hand-harvested separately, often with up to two weeks between harvest dates. The mature block, with vines from the early 1970s, contributes savory tones and fine tannins. The Front block adds spice, while the Fruit Tree block offers generous fruitiness. Blended together, these components create the complex Pinot Noir style Wantirna Estate is renowned for.
Other Reviews....
A deep and brightly coloured crimson purple. Both to look at and smell, this is a concentrated and complex Wantirna pinot that's going to need some time. Aromas of black cherry, damson plum and dried red rose petals lead onto the palate, which is densely packed, structured and very long. Have it with food now, for sure, but those who still have some five to ten years from now will be very well rewarded. Drink 2026-2035.

Philip Rich - James Halliday's Wine CompanionI visited Wantirna Estate around this time last year, and didn’t taste any wine, rather we had tea and biscuits on the porch. Lovely. It’s a vineyard as a garden, if you take my meaning, The place has a sense of intimacy and it’s a world away from many larger producers. 130 dozen produced using very light weight bottles at that. Yay!
Raspberry, red cherry, mint, cedar, pencils and spice, something of a potpourri perfume too. It’s medium-bodied, all red fruits, a little spicy and autumnal, fresh raspberry crunch to acidity, with a firmness to tannin that offers grainy grip, finishing a little sappy with lively acidity, savoury flavours, and excellent length. Oak still shows a little too much as at now, but this is a strong release, and I like the ‘mineral’ character it offers too. Drink 2027-2034+.

Gary Walsh - The Wine FrontThe 2023 Lily Pinot Noir leads with cherry and cranberry, moss and tobacco, with layers of damp earth and exotic spice. This is beautiful. In the mouth, the wine is silky, with fine, pliable tannins that shape the course of the fruit across the tongue. The acidity is woven gently throughout and offers a delicacy and laciness that I find highly attractive. This is such a gorgeous wine. 13.6% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2038.

One thing appealing with the pinots from Bill Downie is that they are immediately drinkable and deliciously so. Another difficult vintage on the Peninsula but this has a balance of aromas, flavours and texture. Almost shy at first, a flutter of mint and herbs, florals and spice, not much, all hinting at what’s to come. Mid-weighted, the palate strewn with dark fruit and spice, a slight green edge coming through – almost a mix of charred radicchio and green peppercorn, but not too much, so it does blend back into the wine. 2023 Yeringberg Pinot NoirYarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinYeringberg is a historic Yarra Valley estate, first established in 1863 and now under the stewardship of the fifth generation of the de Pury family. Once one of the region’s most celebrated vineyards, production ceased in 1921 before being revived by Guill and Katherine de Pury in 1969. Today, winemaker Sandra de Pury leads the winery, working alongside her brother David who manages the vineyard. With some of the oldest vines in the Yarra Valley, Yeringberg continues to produce elegant, age-worthy wines that reflect both heritage and thoughtful custodianship.
From low-yielding, dry-grown Pinot Noir vines planted between 1969 and 1974, fermented fully destemmed with nine days on skins, then matured for 19 months in barrel with 38% new oak. The combination of old vines, low yields and extended elevage defines the style and structure of the 2023 release.
Other Reviews....
Made from MV6 and an old clone from Great Western planted between ’69 and ’74. Fully destemmed and 38% new oak. A bright ruby red. Old vines, low yields and a cool year have produced another terrific Yeringberg pinot. Gently meaty with aromas of black cherry, blueberry, brown spices and lightly crushed violets. Concentrated, structured and long, this kept opening up with air, meaning that, while it can be approached now, you really want to have a bottle or three when it begins to hit its peak over the next five to 10 years plus. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
