Elegant and refined on the palate, with silky, fine-grained and balanced tannins rounding out a wine that can be enjoyed now but that will also reward another four to six years in the cellar. 2022 Southern Light Vineyards Ghostgum Vineyard Main Ridge Pinot NoirMornington Peninsula, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: Diam CorkSouthern Light Vineyards is dedicated exclusively to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, drawn from four distinct vineyard sites across Victoria. Their first release comes from the Ghostgum Vineyard in Main Ridge, with future bottlings to follow from their other sites. The winery, located in Healesville in the Yarra Valley, is purpose-built for small-batch winemaking, where a no-compromise, holistic approach guides every step from vineyard to bottle. Backed by over 50 years of experience across three generations of Joval Wines, Southern Light represents the culmination of a lifelong pursuit of fine wine.
Sourced from low-yielding vines in Main Ridge (just 2.6t/ha), this Pinot reflects a cool, storm-affected vintage that delivered intensity and concentration. Around 60% whole bunch was used across four parcels, matured 10 months in French oak before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Vibrant, perfumed and finely structured, it’s a strikingly pure expression of Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir.

Pitiful yields in ’22 meant Anthony Fikkers made the wine he liked the best: fruit off four blocks, four clones, fermented as one with 10% whole bunches, which still packs a punch; 10 months in French hogsheads, 20% new. It’s such an intriguing wine. An austere style, which is totally legit, full of sichuan pepper, poached rhubarb, a little ashy and stemmy, plus an array of cherry accents. There’s also a strong chinotto flavour with salted, dried Chinese plums. Mid-weighted, a fineness to the tannins, the palate awash with sweet-ish fruit, which offsets the charred radicchio/bitter finish. It will only garner more complexity with age. Drink 2024-2030.

Jane Faulkner - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionThese Ghostgum wines come from the Main Ridge area of the Mornington Peninsula. I prefer the chardonnay though there are things going on with this 2022 Pinot Noir that make you want to keep returning to it.
This wine is reductive and backward and, as a result, you need to sit with it for a bit. Its charms are not immediately apparent. It carries an iodine note, and the flesh of red cherries, and seaweed-like herbs, and sweet strawberry-wrapped-in-cedar. It’s firm and spicy, a little smoky, and definitely surly. It would be easy to pass this over, in its youth, but there’s something about this wine’s structure and depth that makes you think that it has something good in store for the future. Drink 2026-2032.

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine FrontFrom main Ridge in Mornington comes this thoroughly delightful Pinot Noir. Picked from four blocks with different clones used. The 115 and 777 were picked and fermented together with 10% whole bunch, the D2V5 was 100% whole bunch fermented and the MV6 was completely destemmed. Eventually pressed to French hogsheads and then bottled without fining or filtering. Engaging aromas of sweet raspberry and edgier dark cherry with a slightly iron filings cut to the mushroomy characters. Palate is sublimely integrated with a smooth satiny feel of almost lamb’s wool-like qualities. Lovely wine. Drink 2024-2034.

2024 Stargazer Pinot NoirTasmania, AUSTRALIAReduced from $79.99$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinFounded by winemaker Samantha Connew, Stargazer has become one of Tasmania's most compelling small producers, crafting wines of precision and quiet intensity from the Coal River and Derwent Valleys. Whether Riesling, Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, each release reflects a meticulous, hands-off approach and a focus on texture, energy and site expression. For many, Stargazer marks the sweet spot between refinement and individuality in modern Tasmanian wine.
The 2023 Pinot Noir comes exclusively from Stargazer's own vineyards in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, where two separate parcels were planted in 2002 and 2017 respectively. The vineyard is composed of different clones, with most being G5V12 or Wadenswil, with some Abel, 115, 777, and MV6 clones added from the 2017 planting. The fruit is hand-picked, and destemmed (with 25% kept as whole bunches) to vats, where they undergo a cold soak for three days before fermentation begins. After primary fermentation, the must is pressed to French oak puncheons (with 30% being new), where it matures on lees for eight months before being transferred, racked, and blended in a tank for a further rest of six weeks before bottling.
Other Reviews....
If you seek a fruit-pure, flint-struck pinot noir, you are indeed in the right place. Those reductive tones lie nicely simpatico with the pure red/dark cherry, plum and raspberry fruits and there are hints of medina spice, amaro, twiggy bits, turned earth, crushed mountain herbs and purple florals in the mix. On the palate, there is a fine balance and tension between fruit, reduction and fine minerality. The wine shows a composed, complex array of spice, sinew and lovely pure fruit, finishing long, flinty and true. Drink 2025-2038.

Established in 1978 Stonier Vineyards was one of the pioneers on the Mornington Peninsula and has recently returned to being locally owned and run after a period of corporate ownership. The fruit for Stonier Pinot Noir is derived from a selection of estate and leased vineyards, the majority of which sit on the red volcanic basalt between Merricks and Red Hill. The high elevation (200m+) Red Hill vineyards are the primary component of this wine which provides the lovely lifted red fruit profile.

Stonier’s bread and butter range and a good ‘un this vintage. Fruit off grower vineyards but all managed in-house, which gives a level of quality control. This pops and crackles with vitality, good fruit and varietal flavour. Heady aromas are punctuated by red cherries and blood orange doused in exotic spices and fresh herbs. The palate is on the light side of medium bodied with fine tannins and refreshing acidity throughout. A lovely drink. Drink 2032.

A blend of the grower vineyards, a mix of clones. Approximately 20% whole bunch on the sites that sit on volcanic soils, with everything else destemmed. Aged in 500L puncheons of which 8% was new oak. A fragrant celebration of Mornington Peninsula luminous charm, it’s impossible not to be swept away with the gleaming fruit, compact flavour and middle palate pulp and flesh. Cherry compote, plummy goodness and some Gala apple skin. Clove, nigella seed and dewy potting soil. Tannins are sandy and prop up the fruit, before a wash of fresh acidity. It’s immediately satisfying and a delightful drink without food or if you are after a suggestion may I offer the idea of lamb shanks swimming in butter mash. Drink now or will cellar well for 2-4 years. Drink 2025-2029.

Fruit off three vineyards: 65/25/10% Georgica at Red Hill/Stanley Road, Merricks/Robinson in Tuerong. Destemmed (bar 10% whole bunches in a separate fermenter), cold soak for a week and all gently-does-it before being pressed to French oak (mostly puncheons, 10% new, aged eight months); unfiltered. A note from Mike Symons adds, "one barrel was a bit leesy hence clarity is not perfect, maybe also reflective of my eyesight when racking". Ah, how I have missed you. Nothing wrong with the clarity – this is a light garnet hue. Lots of twiggy/bunchy fragrance and flavour, red and morello cherries, Campari, roasted tomatoes, a bit of exotica with joss sticks and rosewood, balsam fir, too. You have to dig the strong bunchy character to get into this. The palate is lighter framed, yet sinewy tannins and perky acidity work together. Drink 2024-2031.

Jane Faulkner - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionA blend of Georgica 65% (Red Hill), Robinson 10% (Tuerong) and Stanley Road 25% (Merricks). Mike Symons talks about his relationship with Will Byron (hot) and Barney Flanders (less hot, but kind of hot), who all help each other out a bit with little fruit parcels they all like. A fruit-loving MP triumvirate here, of sorts. This gets 10% whole bunch, and 10% new oak.
This is a spicy and frisky sort of wine. Strawberry, cherry, smoked paprika and red capsicum, plenty of spice (cardamom in particular), some mint and floral top notes. It’s quite tangy and lively, with a cool spicy feel to it, poached strawberry, a lick of graphite tannin and a bright finish of good length. You have to like them a little more sappy, but it’s good in that style. Drink 2024-2030.

The Wanderer is the personal project of Gembrook Hill winemaker Andrew Marks, who draws on select sites across the Yarra Valley to craft wines that reflect both vineyard character and his own light-handed approach. It’s an outlet for Andrew to explore parcels beyond the family estate, with the Upper Yarra Pinot Noir sitting at the core of the range and underscoring the finesse that this cooler part of the region can deliver.
Sourced from a single vineyard in Yellingbo, a cooler site in the Upper Yarra, this wine captures the elegance and fine detail that Andrew consistently seeks in his work with Pinot Noir. Winemaking sees 20% whole bunches incorporated, and is matured in large format French oak (30% new) for a period of 11 months.

Spicier aromas include those of red cherry coulis, plum, more discreet earth and pretty floral nuances. There is fine density to the medium-bodied flavors that are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the firm, serious and built-to-age finale. This will need to add depth to achieve the upper end of my projected range, but the potential appears to be present. Worth checking out. Drink through 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Volnay Santenots 1er Cru was the first vineyard harvested and even so, I feel this is the one cuvée with suggestions of slight sur-maturité. Fine, but I think Matrot’s Maranges La Fussière is better. Drink 2025-2045.

The 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is the ripest, most dramatic wine in the cellar, as is often the case, bursting with aromas of cherries, plums, spices and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and voluminous palate, with a sweet core of fruit framed by rich structuring tannin.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The 2022 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru contains 25% to 30% whole bunches this vintage. The energetic bouquet offers redcurrant and raspberry fruit, fine mineralité and tension. Hints of black truffle shavings emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There’s a liberal sprinkling of black pepper here, the stem addition perhaps the most tangible amongst the cuvées yet commensurate with the fruit concentration. This is another success for the estate in 2022. Drink 2026-2046.

Aromas of raspberries, red plums, rose petals and spices introduce the 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, a medium to full-bodied, pure and ethereal wine with an elegantly textural attack that segues into a vibrant core of fruit that's framed by supple, almost melting tannins, concluding with a saline finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The 2022 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru is blended with 50% whole bunches, the most of any cuvée in Glantenay's range. The stems are quite potent on the nose, very floral - wilted roses in an antique vase, crushed stone and a touch of truffle oil. The palate is medium-bodied with brittle tannins. Quite saline, which gets the saliva flowing. This is perhaps the most powerful wine on the finish, with a long, spicy aftertaste. Excellent. Drink 2026-2048.

The 2022 Pommard 1er Cru Les Saussilles offers up aromas of sweet red berries, orange rind, peonies and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and refined palate that's vibrant and precise, with a lively spine of acidity and a long, mineral finish. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)From the oldest vines at the Domaine planted in 1902, the 2022 Pommard Les Saucilles 1er Cru is blended with around 30% whole bunches. The attractive nose offers blackberry, wild strawberry, crushed stone and light briny scents evoking images of the sea. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit. Fresh and vibrant, yet there is a gracefulness here that I haven't seen in recent vintages. Tender on the finish yet with no shortchanging of fruit. Excellent. Drink 2026-2046.

The latest rendition of a cuvée that goes from strength to strength, Glantenay's old vine 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Les Saussilles offers up notions of Griotte cherries, cassis, potpourri and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, racy and concentrated, with superb depth at the core and a saline finish, it's well worth seeking out. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru is the only cru completely de-seemed as Glantenay felt that it was already powerful. Whole bunches (50%), gentle handling with no pumpovers or plunging. Matured in seasoned French barriques. Excellent wines from Thousand Candles in 2021, thoroughly deserving of the Best Small Producer trophy they picked up at the 2022 Yarra Valley Wine Show. A bright crimson red. A gently textured wine that was made with respect for the fruit with real persistence and finesse. There's lovely purity to the aromas of red cherries, small, wild strawberries, violets and spice. The whole bunches are barely perceptible, and velvety, quite firm and persistent tannins are in complete harmony with the wine, too.

2023 Wantirna Estate Lily Pinot NoirYarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIAReduced from $110.00$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 13.6%Closure: Stelvin2025 marks 62 years since the first vines were planted at Wantirna Estate, established in 1963 on an east-facing slope in Melbourne's southeastern outskirts. Once a mix of orchards, bush, and grasslands, the vineyard thrives today under the care of Maryann, Reg's daughter, though Reg remains actively involved. The wines, named after his four grandchildren, feature labels illustrated by Michael Leunig, reflecting each grandchild's personality, a heartfelt touch to this family-run estate.
The vineyard's three distinct Pinot Noir blocks, covering just ten acres, are hand-harvested separately, often with up to two weeks between harvest dates. The mature block, with vines from the early 1970s, contributes savory tones and fine tannins. The Front block adds spice, while the Fruit Tree block offers generous fruitiness. Blended together, these components create the complex Pinot Noir style Wantirna Estate is renowned for.

A deep and brightly coloured crimson purple. Both to look at and smell, this is a concentrated and complex Wantirna pinot that's going to need some time. Aromas of black cherry, damson plum and dried red rose petals lead onto the palate, which is densely packed, structured and very long. Have it with food now, for sure, but those who still have some five to ten years from now will be very well rewarded. Drink 2026-2035.

Philip Rich - James Halliday's Wine CompanionI visited Wantirna Estate around this time last year, and didn’t taste any wine, rather we had tea and biscuits on the porch. Lovely. It’s a vineyard as a garden, if you take my meaning, The place has a sense of intimacy and it’s a world away from many larger producers. 130 dozen produced using very light weight bottles at that. Yay!
Raspberry, red cherry, mint, cedar, pencils and spice, something of a potpourri perfume too. It’s medium-bodied, all red fruits, a little spicy and autumnal, fresh raspberry crunch to acidity, with a firmness to tannin that offers grainy grip, finishing a little sappy with lively acidity, savoury flavours, and excellent length. Oak still shows a little too much as at now, but this is a strong release, and I like the ‘mineral’ character it offers too. Drink 2027-2034+.
