A powerhouse with Grand Cru-like poise, this edition has plenty of charm. Aromas of red cherries, nori, forest wood and herbs, as well as a stony edge. The palate has a smooth surface layer of fine, plush tannins across a deeper inner core and a long serve of fresh, ripe red berry and cherry fruit. A magnificent, long and precise finish. A seamless wine. Drink now and for some years to come. Screw cap.

Felton Road wines has some of the world’s southernmost planted vineyards which experience the lowest rainfall and temperatures of any agricultural region in New Zealand. The Bannockburn Pinot Noir is a one third blend from each of Felton Roads Cornish Point, Calvert and The Elms vineyards located in this Central Otago sub region with maturation taking place in French oak for 13 months.

Deep, slightly cloudy dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark crimson red hue. Powerful ripe dark cherry and plum aromas subtlety laced with violet arise from the glass followed by some anise, spiced dried meats and toasty cedar end notes. Possessing superb fruit richness, a supple texture and magnificent power, mouthfilling flavours of ripe dark cherries, spicy dark plums and subtle strawberry infusions explode across the palate. Also present are underlying nuances of game, hints of anise and spicy lightly toasted vanillin oak. Velvet smooth tannins are magically interwoven into the layers of expressive fruit. Exceptionally long aftertaste of spicy dark cherries, dark plums, meaty characters, faint anise and spicy cedar.

This a terrific example of one of the country’s consistently best wines. I find the silken, seamless texture totally seductive. It’s challenging to identify individual flavours because there are so many of them, this wine defines complexity. Floral, herb, berry fruit and an array of hard-to-describe savoury elements suggesting baked earth, wood smoke and the sort of scents you might encounter in sniffing distance of a Turkish spice stall. 13.5% (Screwcap)

Cornish Point tends to be a little bit softer in texture and weight, with lower acidity from the site in general. Around 20 to 30% whole bunch, crushed to tank, left to sit and ferment wild. I oscillate on fully enjoying Cornish Point over the Block wines, but this release had me from a wink across the room. Fine truffle note over black cherries. Smells like fine chocolate fondant, touch of Xmas cake spice, whiff of mahogany wood, then something fresh, frisky, gently herbal and floral. Slides across the palate with ease and a seamless, smooth feel. Great energy in the wine. Vibrant, harmonious, great balanced but distinctly also a relaxed, open weave feel that makes the wine so good. Really delicious. Really good. Drink: 2015 - 2025

Hiro Kusuda was born in Tokyo where he worked as a lawyer before a stint in Australia. Along the way his love affair with wine and winemaking grew, and eventually he set off to complete his studies at Geisenheim in Germany before moving to Martinborough in New Zealand to make hand crafted Pinot Noir. Kusuda is known for attention to detail, to the point that each berry is picked individually at harvest by his Japanese friends that fly out each year to assist. Naturally this precision comes at a cost, in particular the miniscule volumes produced, and as such stocks are extremely limited.

    Other Reviews....
Delicate red color. This is very floral and spicy with subtle cloves, white pepper, and gun metal. Full-bodied yet underlying acidity that covers the fruit in the palate and firm, powdery tannins. Extremely long and vivid. Bright finish. Drink or hold.

Delicate, edgy, supple syrah with violet, red rose petal, fresh herb, white pepper and subtle spicy flavours. The wine has great purity, power and an ethereal texture. Needs bottle-age to reveal its full potential.

The relatively pale colour of this pinot noir might trick you into thinking it’s a light wine but don’t be deceived, it has extraordinary power and length. A wine that’s all about purity and subtlety. Cherry, fresh herbs and subtle spices. Reserve judgement until it has at least a few year’s bottle age.

Pale garnet. So black-peppery on the nose!! Light and sleek – really smooth and ethereal. I feel as though I should be comparing this to Jamet. Tannins almost imperceptible. Great, delicate balance between fruit and acidity. None of these Kusuda wines is obviously high in acidity (apart from the 2019 Riesling). I feel as though I could hoover this up now, even though it has not been fully launched. Long – and health juice again. Ethereal yet not light or wan. Drink 2021 - 2033.
