  Perfumed, the tannins have melded beautifully to the rich opulent fruit and this wine is really beginning to sing as it enters its peak drinking window.

  The Piggott Range vineyard vines are 25-30 years old, and are planted in rock and shale, with only 10-13 mm top soil. The vine roots work hard to establish themselves and force their way downwards between cracks in the rock and shale to find water. The yields are extremely low at one tonne per acre. The Piggott Syrah is matured in 100% new French oak barriques.
  Totally opaque black, purple, crimson colour. Superb lifted nose, even more intense than the previous wines. Lifted notes of plum concentrate, blackpepper, spice, blackberry, violets and earth. A sniffers paradise! The palate overwhelms. This is concentration plus, and its hard to believe that the Astralis could surpass this flavour profile. Concentrated flavours of liquorice, blackberry and spice, with a degree of voluptuousness that is almost too much to handle – a sensuous overload. Roman describes this wine as the complete deal ‘steak, eggs and cigar’, one could add sex to that description as well. Layers of strong liquorice, spice and blackpepper followed by a hint of earth and subtle toasted oak. Fine firm tannin structure.

A giant Syrah, it boasts an enormously rich nose of black fruits, subtle vanilla, smoke, and a hint of graphite.   Magnificent colour displaying an impenetrable inky black core with a very deep dark purple black hue. Powerful aromas of ripe blackberries, dark plum and liquorice are followed by some smoky vanillin cedar, light earth and pepper. Rich, concentrated, powerful and structured the palate delivers mouthfilling flavours of liquorice, ripe blackberries and black cherries over smoky vanillin cedar, some meatiness, a touch of earth and spicy pepper. Chewy mouthfeel with a firm muscular tannin structure. Exceptionally long liquorice, blackberry, black cherry, vanillin cedar, scorched earth, dried meats and blackpepper aftertaste.

  The 2002 vintage was uniform across the Clarendon Hills range, with all wines performing superbly. The wine differs from the 2001 in that only two new barriques were used whereas 100% new oak was used the previous year. This wine differs from the previous vintage in body weight and structure. 2001 Astralis was comparable to Penfolds Grange – a monumental concentrated Shiraz. The 2002 Astralis is comparable to a Henschke Hill of Grace. The difference in style is attributable to the climatic variation due to the vintage.
  Totally black purple colour. Superb lifted nose of violets, leather, blackcurrant and spice. The palate structure is very reminiscent of Henschke Hill of Grace with a sophistication and elegance that is rare in Australian wine. The vintage yielded crops of ½ to 1 tonne per acre, compared with 2 to 2 ½ tonnes in the previous year. The wine is still very voluptuous on the palate with concentrated powerful flavours of plum, spice, anise and white pepper very evident. Fine grained tannins with an exceptionally long aftertaste of plum, spice and white pepper. An exceptional red that continued to blossom in the glass. Bratasiuk draws parallels of this wine to the 1992, and just to demonstrate the parallels, he opened a bottle of the 1992.

This compelling, black/blue-hued offering from 75-year-old Syrah vines tastes like blood of the vine. An extraordinary perfume of flowers, creme de cassis, blackberries, roasted meat, new saddle leather, and earth is followed by a wine with sweet tannin, sensational concentration, full body, an unctuous texture, and a full-throttle, tannic finish.   An extraordinary expression of Grenache. The vineyard is situated on the highest and steepest section of the Blewitt Springs Vineyard and yields miniscule quantities of highly concentrated small berries.

  Tasting Note: Totally opaque black purple crimson colour. Perfumed nose – wonderful lift of spice, violets and white pepper. The palate is exceptional with a profound length and depth of flavour not found in the previous Grenache tasted. Again in 2002 this is the superstar of Grenache with layers of flavour – liquorice, spice and blackberry which are overpowered by an intense white pepper background. Perfect balance and exceptionally long white pepper aftertaste.

  Clarendon Hills has built a global reputation for its Syrah and Grenache, with the best examples commanding large dollars, and justifiably so. However, over the years the line up has consistently revealed three bargains, with one absolute bargain, and they were all Cabernet Sauvignon. It's hardly surprising that the Cabernet Sauvignons have been passed over in favour of Syrah and Grenache - after all it’s the latter varieties that McLaren Vale generally does best with.

  Roman Bratasiuk again proves the point that with the right terroir, old vines, and the right viticulture, exceptional Cabernet can, and is, being produced.
  The vines were planted in 1940, and are the old Reynella Cabernet clone. These clones were originally sourced from Chateaux Lafite in the 1840’s and bought to Australia as cuttings. “So what?”, you might ask, but there is significance in this fact. The 1840’s cutting are pre Phylloxera, and consist of the original Lafite vines, prior to planting post Phylloxera with more resistant, and less flavour filled clones. What Bratasiuk has done with these old vines is take us back to the flavour experiences of the 1800’s, and moreover his winemaking techniques remain ‘Old Time French’. As with all his wines, fermentation takes place with wild yeast strains which add layers of complexity to the Cabernet. The wine has been matured in 80% new and 20% one year old French barriques. The yields are between 2 and 2.5 tonnes per acre. Retasted November 2010:
  The Brookman Cabernet displays an opaque, dark red colour, with deep, dark brick red hue. Perfumed aromas of violets, blackcurrant and cedar, followed by some spice and earthy leather like end notes. The palate shows slightly more richness and a touch more weight than the 2001 Sandown. Evolving very gracefully with flavours of blackcurrant and spice to the fore, with a cedar background and some cigar box characters making an appearance on the back palate. Fine grained tannins, superbly integrated with the fruit and very long aftertaste of cedar, blackcurrant, spice and earth.

  Bratasiuk regards this wine as a parallel with Ducru Beaucaillou. Opaque purple black colour. Superb nose, with distinct Bordeaux lift and expression. Superb aroma of cedar, blackcurrant and spice. The palate is a delight, with wonderfully ripe and concentrated blackcurrant flavours. Absolutely no hint of leaf or mint – this is beautifully ripe sweet fruit. In the background the cedar oak and spice merge to produce the impression of a complete wine. The mouth feel is generous, reflecting the warm vintage. Outstanding depth and persistence. Fine, firm tannins, yet perfectly balanced followed by a very long spice and blackcurrant aftertaste.

  “This is My ‘Latour’”, beams Roman, and indeed this is a formidable wine, and on a relative basis, an absolute bargain. The 2000 Chateau Latour, (from a comparable great year), was priced at around A$700 a bottle on the early futures market. Is the pleasure of a bottle of Latour as a good as the pleasure from nearly a dozen bottles of 2001Clarendon Hills Cabernet? Certainly Clarendon Hills does not have First Growth status, but on a quality basis Roman over delivers.

  Tasting Note: Totally opaque black crimson colour. Magnificent aroma of liquorice allsorts, blackcurrant, spice, cedar and violets. The palate is a powerhouse of Cabernet flavour and has a richness and depth that the previous two Cabernets don’t have. A “ supersaturated” wine. The alcohol is 14.5%, reflecting the fact that this is the last block of Cabernet to be picked. There is monumental power and structure, with voluptuous blackcurrant, and spice flavours filling every corner of the palate. Layers of confectionary and cedar are enhanced by the re occurring violet character. Very fine, very firm dry tannins, perfectly balanced, with a long powerful aftertaste of cedar and blackcurrant.

Although closed, it displays gorgeous but subtle notes of smoked meats, black currants, graphite, new saddle leather, truffles, and blackberries. Remarkably elegant for a wine of such power and intensity, this complex, rich, full-bodied, backward Syrah has totally absorbed its aging in 100% French oak, and appears set for a long life. If you plan on drinking it over the next 4-5 years, it will need 24 hours of decanting. It should be at its finest between 2012-2035.

It is sourced from a vineyard planted in 1920 and is one of the Syrah cuvees in which 100% new oak is utilized (along with Brookman, Hickinbotham, and Piggott Range). It delivers an ethereal bouquet of smoky oak, violets, espresso, black pepper, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Densely packed and tightly wound, all it needs is time. The wine is totally harmonious, impeccably balanced, and exceptionally long. When it fully unwinds, even my high rating will appear conservative. Its only competition comes from the likes of Guigal, Chapoutier, Chave, Krankl, and Ringland.

  This is the piece de resistance of the Clarendon Hills collection. The Astralis vineyard was planted in the early 1930’s on clay ironstone soils. The vineyard yields approximately 2 tonnes per acre. The site has a due east orientation which captures the early morning summer sun and is one of the earliest blocks of old vine Syrah to ripen. The wine is matured in 100% new French oak barriques.

  Tasting Note:
  It is impossible to imagine blacker, more densely coloured wines than of the Syrah that preceded this wine in the line up. Yet when poured, the Astralis was not only visibly blacker and more purple, but the wine actually clung to the side of the glass as if the colour had been sprayed on. Superlatives are hard to find for this wine as they have already been exhausted – only a short time ago it seemed impossible to produce a Syrah on yet another level. The nose is a perfect sniff - one need not go beyond it to reach more lofty heights of pleasure. In the Astralis, the perfumed nature of the Clarendon Hills Syrah reaches a pinnacle, with an emphasis on violets, spice, liquorice, mocca, blackpepper and blackberries. On the palate, a super concentration of flavour is revealed – it is simply not possible to pack more flavour into a wine. Explosive, mouthfilling layers of blackberry, cedar, mocca, liquorice and blackpepper. Fine, firm dry tannins. Exceptionally long aftertaste that refuses to surrender. This wine aspires to a new level and certainly achieves it. If you can believe Roman (and we have no reason to doubt him) he and his ‘mate’ Robert Parker attended a tasting of Grange from 1951 to 2001 and mutually concluded Astralis to be the superior wine. Discount that praise if you will but whatever happens, get hold of some Astralis!

Tighter because of being in the bottle, it is an extraordinary effort that offers the essence of graphite, blackberry liqueur, espresso, and acacia flowers, all combining into an olfactory smorgasbord for the senses. Sensationally concentrated, with sweet tannin, but neither weighty nor over the top as might be expected for a wine of such extreme richness, it is an extraordinarily well-delineated Syrah that should hit its prime in 10-12 years, and last for 30-40. The flagship Clonakilla shiraz viognier has abundant sweet musky aromas, deli meats, light summer berries and Marco Polo tea aromas – sweet and exotic indeed.   Named after one of the founders of Coriole, Mary Kathleen, this wine is a blend of 46% Merlot, 40% Cabernet and 14% Cabernet Franc. Opaque brick red colour. Aromas of ripe plums over a leather and earthy background, with hints of mulberry and vanilla. The palate structure is quite solid, and not as forward as might be expected, however, it's a wine that will develop well over the next decade. The Merlot continues to make its presence felt with its earthy character, whilst the Cabernet component provides a dusty background, finishing with liquorice and confectionary flavours. Fine tannin structure, excellent balance and long plum / spice aftertaste.

  Retasted 03/02/2011: Opaque black crimson colour with deep dark red mauve hue. Refined aromas of blackberry, liquorice and blackpepper followed by some lightly charred cedar and spice. Superb palate concentration is counterpointed by a refined structure. Mouthfilling flavours of liquorice, blackberry and confectionary followed by some distinct blackpepper characters that persist through to the back palate. Spicy toasted cedar overlay.   The Lloyd Reserve Shiraz is produced from a small four acre single vineyard planted in 1919. The yields from these old vines are typically around half tonne per acre. The use of chemicals and fertilizers is minimised and the vineyard is pruned and harvested by hand. The first vintage of Coriole Lloyd Shiraz was produced in 1989, and has been made every year since with the exception of 2003. The 2002 vintage in McLaren Vale was exceptional despite lower yields than average due to the coolest summer on record. Since the 1999 vintage there’s been a gradual shift away from the use of 100% American oak, the 2002 vintage was produced with a combination of 85% French oak and 15% American oak. In fact the American oak component was actually purchased from French coopers, the winery believing the French are much better coopers than the Americans! Matured for a period of 18 months in oak hogsheads, the wine is then given a further 12 months bottle age before being released.

  Re-tasted on 29/05/2015: Superb colour featuring a totally opaque inky black dark red core with a deep very dark red hue. Showing both intensity and complexity the nose expels perfumed scents of ripe blackcurrants, subtle violet and dark mulberries that interplay with secondary and tertiary nuances of cedary tobacco, bay leaf, faint earth and spice. Medium weighted, rich in fruit yet elegant in appearance and with a gorgeous savouriness the palate delivers mouthfilling flavours of blackcurrant and dark mulberries intermixed with cedar, tobacco and cigar box followed by touches of earth and spice. The velvet smooth tannins still have plenty of structure behind them for further cellaring. Long aftertaste of blackcurrant, dark mulberry, tobacco leaf, cigar box, dusty cedar and spice.

  Tasted on 14/08/2006: A magnificent wine!  This is a must wine for wine lovers who have lost their faith in this noble grape variety.  Vintage conditions for the 2004 vintage were perfect - Winemaker Vanya Cullen rating it alongside the other outstanding vintages of the last 15 years, 1995, 1999 & 2001. Good rainfall in the months up to November 2003 produced perfect conditions for the vines in the early part of the growing season. The main growing season was cool and dry, which was ideal as the vines did not even become mildly stressed. This was followed by warm but not extreme temperatures, which led to the production of red grapes that attained perfect physiological ripeness. The wine was produced using biodynamic techniques from vines 30 years old, with yields around 2 tonnes per acre. Maturation was in French oak of which 54% was new) for a period of 18 months.

  Made from a blend 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Very deep crimson colour with black crimson hue.  Superb nose – showing sophisticated Cabernet aromas – top notes of violets followed by blackcurrant, cassis, cedar and spice.  The palate delivers outstanding length and depth of flavour – again very sophisticated with wonderful ripe Cabernet fruit flavours.  Spiced plum, white pepper, violet infusions and blackcurrant overlaid with liquorice allsorts.  Fine grained tannins, perfectly balanced, followed by a very long aftertaste of liquorice allsorts, cassis, plum and spice. Outstanding.

  A very impressive wine from an excellent Margaret River vintage. Made from a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. This is the first time Petit Verdot has been introduced into the blend. Opaque crimson mauve purple colour. Classic Bordeaux nose of chocolate, spice, blackcurrant and cedar followed by a touch of truffle. On the palate the flavour profile seems slow to start but then builds towards the middle and back palate, to reveal flavours of chocolate, spice and blackcurrant. Flavours of black pepper and blackcurrant emerge on the end palate followed by a hint of liquorice. Outstanding persistence. Fine grained dry tannins, perfect balance, followed by an aftertaste that lasts for minutes. Cellar 8-10 years.

  An exceptional wine of International standing. The 1997 vintage has a higher than normal Cabernet Sauvignon component due to the exceptional quality of those grapes, and as a consequence has given the wine a much firmer backbone, and yet a surprisingly soft tannin structure. The vines are now fully mature having been planted in the late 1960's, and are non irrigated and low yielding, less than 2 tonnes per acre.Made from a blend of 82% Cabernet, 12% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, the wine was matured for 18 months in new and old French oak. For the statistically minded 32% new oak, 48% one year old and 20% two year old. The oak ratio's are interesting in that it indicates the desire for a very careful balance of oak flavour compounds being introduced as opposed to the complexity of barrel aging. Opaque crimson colour. The nose is a little restrained at first, however, let the wine warm up and it yields superbly sophisticated aromas of violets, blackcurrants and spice with a hint of truffle. The quality of what is to follow is clearly assured. The palate is intense, concentrated and seamless. The component parts are recognisable but only as part of a totality of flavour. The transition of one flavour compound into another slips across the palate with a rare degree of harmony. Perfect tannins, super fine and in part due to the fact that a portion of the wine was left to macerate on skins for 6 weeks prior to pressing. The wine is very much in the infancy of its development and a 15-20 year bottle life would be easily achieved. Exceptional aftertaste of blackcurrant and cedar. A Must!

The wines have been matured for 18 months in barriques, of which 40% were new. This is a magnificent cellaring potential cellaring proposition. Totally opaque black purple colour. Although still youthful, the nose reveals superb notes of violets, blackcurrant, spice, cedar and truffle. The palate structure is formidable with its Classic Bordeaux inspired Cabernet tannic backbone. Explosive flavours with a heavy sprinkling of white pepper, blackcurrant and cedar. The tannins are dry, yet superfine and balanced to the powerful fruit component. Outstanding length with an exceptionally long aftertaste of spice, blackcurrant, liquorice and white pepper.

  Tasted 2/12/2002: A monumental red! Very deep crimson colour, with black heart. Superb nose with aroma of vanilla, liquorice allsorts dark chocolate, violets and spice. The palate is mouthfilling with Grange like weight and structure. Flavours of liquorice, blackberry, vanilla, cedar and toasted oak, followed by an emergence of blackpepper on the backpalate.   This estate's most renowned offering is their old vine Shiraz (90+ year old vines) called The Dead Arm. The unfined/unfiltered 1999 The Dead Arm Shiraz (2,000 cases) was aged in 100% new oak, of which 70% was American and 30% French. It is about as natural and unmanipulated a product of the vineyard as one can find. Full-bodied and awesomely rich, notes of black pepper, licorice, and blackberry as well as cherry liqueur cascade over the palate with enormous concentration and intensity, high tannin, and a structured, muscular style. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and consume it over the following 2-3 decades. It is a timeless museum piece made in a style that can only be produced in Barossa or McLaren Vale.

  The Dead Arm gets its name in a fairly inauspicious way – it is named after the disease (Eutypa Lata) which afflicts some of the oldest vines at d’Arenberg. Eutypa Lata, or ‘Dead Arm’ is common all around the world in old vineyard sites. The disease in effect slowly reduces one of the ‘arms’ of the vines to dead wood, which then means the other arm of the vine produces small volumes of the most incredibly concentrated and highly flavoured grapes.

  Opaque black crimson colour with deep crimson hue. Aroma of spice and vanilla followed by blackberry, resulting in an excellent perfumed lift. The palate has the weight, depth and complexity that one normally associates with Dead Arm. There is plenty of palate weight, with flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate and spice followed by a touch of confectionary on the back palate. Outstanding length and depth. Perfect balance with very long aftertaste of liquorice, dark chocolate and vanilla. A spectacular Dead Arm Shiraz.

  Winemaker Chester Osborn has a clear winemaking philosophy that's expressed in the Dead Arm Shiraz: 'I aim to make loudest, most flowery fragrant and most fruit-flavoured wines that have great palate texture and are free of excess oak. I look for tannins that are long, lively, gritty and youthful with fragrant fruit-mineral notes… One other focus is to make a wine that is not going to go too earthy or bitumen - tarry with age. Some producers make wines that have oodles of fruit; they’re ripe, rich and gutsy, but in a few years these wines may show inherent problems from their production. That is fat, blousy, and chocolate and tar with short palate life. This is also the opposite of what we aim to produce.'

  Totally opaque impenetrable inky black core with a deep very dark red black tinged hue. The nose offers up an intense aromatic profile of ripe dark plums, liquorice and dark chocolate over some vanillin oak, light leather and spicy pepper end notes. Powerful, opulently fruited and plushly textured the palate possesses a rich flavour profile of ripe blackberries, dark plum and liquorice followed by a trace of dark chocolate, vanillin oak, a touch of leather and spice. Superb depth and concentration with very polished, silky smooth tannins. Exceptionally long aftertaste of ripe blackberries, liquorice, subtle dark chocolate, vanillin oak, a touch of leather and spice. A very impressive Dead Arm that is maturing beautifully.

  The 2006 Command is showing much more pepper and spice in contrast to the voluptuous fruit bomb style in vintages like 2003 and 2005. The wine was matured for 34 months in a combination of American & French oak and then given a further 12 months bottle age before being released.

  This years Command displays a degree of refinement and restraint rarely seen in previous vintages Opaque black dark red colour with dark crimson red hue. The nose is closed at first but as the wine warms it becomes more perfumed exhibiting aromas of liquorice allsorts, confectionary, ripe plum and blackberry followed by some spice and blackpepper end notes. The palate displays powerful concentrated flavours but is not as voluptuous as the 2005 vintage. Flavours of liquorice allsorts, blackberry and plum are followed by some blackpepper back palate characters. Fine grained well integrated tannins with very long aftertaste of blackpepper, spice, blackberry and liquorice allsorts. A Command with excellent structure and cellaring potential.

  Voluptuous was a descriptor that Peter Lehmann and his Barossa Shiraz had an almost exclusive franchise on. That's not to say other Barossa producers didn't make 'big' wines, its just that Lehmann seemed to pack a lot more flavour into his reds than other producers could. However, there is a fine line between being voluptuous and being 'fat'. In art, Rubens understood the fact very well, and fed his models on a diet of bread until they reached a state of equilibrium between beauty and ugliness. Pinot Noir displays a similar trait that is finely balanced on a razor edge, that curious juxtaposition between fruit and game - get the balance right and the wine is exceptional.
  Shiraz too has a turning point - that being the measure of just how much fruit flavour and alcohol the wine can take before it tips and becomes jam like or porty. On the right side of the line the flavours released are sensational and unique to the Barossa - on the other side of the line it's a dry Vintage Port.
  The 1996 Elderton Command is finely tuned - a perfection of counterpoints and a redefinition of the descriptor voluptuous. It's hardly surprising that at the London International Wine & Spirit competition it was declared the World's Best Shiraz, where else could such a wine be produced? Brian Croser summed up Australia's unique growing conditions with the statement "We really do have the best viticultural climate anywhere in the world, by the length of the street".
  The fruit is sourced from very old, low yielding vines on the Elderton vineyard, planted in the early 1900's. These vines are situated on rich river silt soils and red brown earth over limestone, in a Mediterranean climate with cropping levels less than 4 tonnes per hectare. The grapes are picked at optimum maturity (13.5 to 14.5 baume, or higher, depending on the year). The wine is matured for more than 2 years in American & French oak puncheons and is given a further 12 months bottle maturation prior to release.
  Opaque black crimson colour. Magnificent complex super ripe fruit nose. Smoky oak, ripe plums, liquorice, chocolate mocca and vanillin spice all fill the nostrils creating a heady sniffing experience. The palate displays the superb counterpoints of flavour expression and delivers an explosion that is difficult to match. Total concentrate of ripe Shiraz fruit, not a corner of the mouth is left in doubt that this is a great wine. Superb ripe plum, smoky oak, vanilla, spice, liquorice, cedar and hints of tar, exceptional and without any evidence of being hot or jammy. This is the skill, this is the unique quality that pushes this wine into the Shiraz, "Hall of Fame". Perfect balance, fine grained, yet evident tannins, exceptional length and an aftertaste of ripe plum, blackberries, mocca, vanilla and liquorice that lingers for at least five minutes. On the back label, there is a corny and rather dated phrase, "Your wish is our command". At the risk of perpetrating the corny phrase, let us simply say - we urge you to lodge your commands early - stocks are limited. An outstanding wine of world class standing.

  Elderton Command Shiraz has established an international reputation as one of Australia’s Great Wine Icons. The Elderton style reflects the Barossa terroir perfectly, resulting in a voluptuous, super ripe fruit bomb, that has enthralled wine lovers around the world.
  Recently, a distinguished Californian wine maker labelled Australian Shiraz as a ‘caricature’ of what (according to him) Shiraz ought to smell and taste like, preferring an obviously lighter leaner and less fruit filled wine. So what is a real Shiraz supposed to taste like? The answer to that question will depend on who you ask and from what part of the globe they come from.
  A winemaker in an area like Rhone Valley would aim to produce a lighter, less alcoholic wine (around 12% alc/vol) and consequently display more white and black pepper qualities than its Barossa counterpart.In a conversation with Ron Laughton of Heathcote’s Jasper Hill, it was revealed that the pepper flavour profiles are in fact due to less than fully ripened fruit, a parallel that could be drawn with leafy, vegetal qualities of Cabernet. Laughton maintains that it is only two weeks after he tastes the black pepper qualities in his berries that he will consider picking the grapes – waiting for the richer riper fruit bomb qualities to emerge. The ripe Australian Shiraz’s from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale or Heathcote, Victoria have alcohol levels typically between 14-15%, with some even being higher. However, there is generally no sign of portiness or hot alcohol characteristics on the finish. The qualities that make Australian Shiraz so unique are the juxtaposition of apparent conflicting qualities. Super rich fruit, velvet smooth richness, spectacular colour and density, followed by layers of mesmerising flavour, and relatively high alcohol with low pH levels. Who could blame international winemakers for being envious of such a combination.

  The Old Vine Collection is a personal pursuit of Rob Gibson’s in locating extremely old and rare remnant vineyards planted over 150 years ago. The vineyard is located at Langmeil in the Barossa Valley and the vines were planted in the mid 1800’s by the original Barossa settlers making them some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Gibson is currently searching for original old remnant vineyards in Coonawarra and the Hunter Valley.

  Rob Gibson is a viticulturalist with a very investigative mind. He has no argument that quality winemaking starts in the vineyard, however in order to maximise the end flavour profiles of a wine, Gibson has come to the realization that he must draw upon a diverse range of fields from horticulture and soil science, to meteorology and climatology. In fact, Gibson’s obsession with terroir leads him burrowing under vines like an old wombat in order to arrive at a deeper understanding of each Old Vines site (see tasting notes on the 2002 Gibson’s Barossa Vale Shiraz.)
  Totally opaque black dark red colour with a very dark brick red hue. The nose sings with heady aromas of liquorice, dark plum and mocha followed by vanillin oak, hints of earth and spice. Rich and satiny in texture the palate is flooded with mouthfilling flavours of liquorice, ripe luscious blackberries, dark plum and flashes of dark chocolate over earthy vanillin oak, traces of leather and spice. Excellent power and depth with an opulent yet refined mouthfeel and silky smooth tannins.   Aged in 100% new oak (70% French and 30% American), the 2002 Shiraz Old Vine Collection is an amazing Shiraz produced from 92- to 139-year-old vines. Surprisingly, it possesses “only” 14+% alcohol. A deep saturated purple color is followed by aromas of espresso roast, white chocolate, pepper, blackberry liqueur, and melted asphalt. This is a youthful, primary red displaying an incredible wealth of fruit, magnificent glycerin as well as depth, and a monster finish of 70+ seconds. This stunning 2002 should hit its prime in 2-4 years, and last for 15 or more.

  Rob Gibson - the former chief viticulturist of Penfolds, is regarded as the worlds foremost authority on the cultivation of Shiraz. His expertise is sought in the USA, South America, Europe and even Russia – (we only hope he doesn’t tell the ‘opposition’ the full story.) The story of Barossa Old Vines Shiraz is very much an expression of Gibson’s passion for Australian Viticultural history.
  During his career, he made a habit of looking over fences into the backyards of Barossa residents, seeking out ruminants of old vineyards. His discovery of Langmiel Vineyard which at 155 years old, is regarded as the oldest in Australia and of great viticultural importance. These old, dry-grown treasures have survived the seasonal variations of many decades. Their thick trunks have often been hollowed out by white ants and their hearts exposed for all to view. The vines are pruned and harvested by hand yielding miniscule crops, often of less than 2 tonnes per acre.
  But what special quality of these vines bestows greatness upon a wine? Is it merely our perception based upon age and rarity that drives up prices and demand, or is there a perceivable difference in flavour? Certainly commercial scarcity contributes to the price, but in relative terms to the current release Penfolds Grange for example, most old vine wines are very inexpensive. Research indicates that the extraordinary quality of wines produced from old vines begins in their root system: Old age has seemingly conferred a natural wisdom upon such vines and they possess an extensive network of deeply penetrating roots that are able to withstand moisture stress. In fact the grandfather vines are never stressed, they merely experience a variation of moisture tension in the various layers of strata through which their roots penetrate. It is this water tension that influences the leaf development of the vine and the subsequent evolution of unique flavour compounds in the grapes. The result is a marvel for the International wine community – wines of unmistakable character and complexity that cannot be found in wines of younger origin. With great age, only the healthiest vines have survived, to provide a summation of times past, as well as a window into the future. The rare attributes of these vines mean the wines produced from them are amongst the worlds great drinking, collecting and investment opportunities.

  This tiny property is located amongst the urban landscape of Langmel. The grandfather vines were planted in the mid 1800’s and are amongst the oldest in Australia. Today this national treasure is nurtured by the Lindner and Sphr families, and thanks to its isolated suburban location, it remains disease free. Rob Gibson was the Penfolds Grange viticulturist for many years and was responsible for identifying top growers as sources of fruit for Penfolds Grange, St.Henri, Bin 389 and other top Penfolds brands. Gibson also owns the Wilfreda vineyard, which was a source of Grange fruit in the 1980’s. This fruit goes into his Barossa Vale Shiraz, which is a snap at the $30 price tag. The 2000 Old Vines Collection is an outstanding follow up to the 1999.

  Meshach is Grant Burge’s equivalent of Grange, although it’s made as a much more refined expression of the variety. Meshach is produced from 80 year old vines and matured for 2 years in new American oak. The 1998 Meshach is an impressive wine, but falls short on concentration compared to previous vintages.

  Very deep crimson colour with black heart and deep crimson mauve hue. Superb nose of violets, spice, blackberry, plum and vanilla – an excellent sniffing experience. The palate whilst refined by Grange standards is nonetheless mouthfilling and displays great length and depth. Flavours of vanilla, spice, blackcurrant and plum over layers of subtle oak. Perfect integration of components. Velvet smooth tannins, followed by an exceptionally long aftertaste of violets, anise, vanilla and blackcurrant.

  Mollydooker winemaker Sparky Marquis declares that his wines make people go wow! – Well this wine is a double or triple WOW! A total saturate of colour – totally black and with paint like cling to the glass. Superb aroma of liquorice, dark chocolate, mocha, vanilla and spice. The palate is an explosion of flavour – liquorice, spice, black pepper and vanilla are perfectly balanced, and overlaid with black and white pepper. Exceptionally long aftertaste of vanilla, plum and liquorice.

  Greenock Creek Vineyard & Cellars, owned by Michael and Annabelle Waugh, remains one of South Australia’s iconic wineries. Start with a great terroir, add in old vine material and meticulous winemaking, and end with extraordinary results.
  
  The 2005 Alice’s Shiraz spent 28 months in seasoned American oak hogsheads. Aromas of smoke, asphalt, meat, game, truffle, and blueberry soar from the glass. On the palate this full-bodied Shiraz is velvety-textured, layered, spicy, and richly fruity. While not quite as riveting as the 2004 edition, it has enough structure to evolve for several years and should drink well through 2025.

  A sleeper offering is the 2003 Cabernet, an old French oak-aged 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. I have been drinking up my stash of the 1997, and it remains very young at ten years of age. Made from 15-year-old vines with yields of 1.5 tons of fruit per acre, it offers beautiful sweet black currant fruit interwoven with notions of cherries, road tar, cedar, and spice box. It would be interesting to insert this classic, top-flight Cabernet Sauvignon in a blind tasting of the finest Bordeaux. A beautiful full-bodied texture and sweet tannin suggest it will keep for 10-15 years

  From 16-year-old vines, the inky/purple-tinged 2003 Shiraz Seven Acres was aged 28 months in American wood, but it has soaked up all its vanillin characteristics, exhibiting a beautifully sweet nose of blueberries, blackberries, tar, and crushed rocks. Dense, full-bodied, and opulent, this stunning Shiraz is a candidate for “Shiraz of the Vintage” in 2003. Drink it over the next 15+ years.

  Opaque black dark crimson red colour with deep dark red hue. The nose is a touch more reserved than the 2004 Alices Shiraz with aromas of blackberry, liquorice, vanilla and confectionary emerging. Full bodied and gloriously rich the palate displays opulent flavours of blackberry, liquorice, vanilla, confectionary and spice. Excellent concentration and length. Super fine grained tannin structure with long aftertaste of blackberry, liquorice, confectionary and spice.
  Drink over the next 3-4 years (2010-2014).

  The 2004 Shiraz “Apricot Block” was aged for 28 months in older American oak. It has an expressive bouquet of cedar, tar, pepper, violets, blueberry, and licorice. Full-bodied, smoothly-textured, layered, and rich, this intense, powerful wine should drink well for 12-15 years. 95 points

  The wine possesses the concentration of the greatest classics ever produced in such Bordeaux vintages as 1945, 1947, 1959, 1961, and 1982. This is a full-bodied red with a finish that lasts well over 60 seconds. For its size and concentration, it is, surprisingly, not heavy, just super-endowed. The Shiraz is accessible, but still primary. Unfortunately, quantities are extremely limited for this spectacular, world-class Australian red.
