Antonelli San Marco is a 190-hectare estate acquired by the Antonelli family in 1881, making it one of the historic wineries in the Montefalco DOCG region. The estate cultivates indigenous varieties like Trebbiano Spoletin, Grechetto, Sangiovese, and places a significant emphasis on Sagrantino.
Grechetto is the primary white varietal in Umbria, and the production of Colli Martani DOC mandates 100% Grechetto. Hand-picked grapes are pressed, fermented, and matured on lees in stainless steel tanks before bottling.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Montefalco Grechetto opens in the glass with mint leaves, dusty florals and hints of crushed green apple forming a delicate bouquet. It's round and pleasantly sweet with crisp white pit fruit and spices as saline-tinged minerals add a salty edge toward the close. It finishes crisply refreshing and perfumed, leaving slowly tapering hints of sour melon and savory spice. Vividly fruity but then savory and spicy through the close, it's a total pleasure to taste. Drink 2023 - 2026.

After harvest, the fruit is gently whole bunch pressed and the wine is made entirely in stainless steel.

Grillo is a grape variety native to Sicily which traditionally was used for the production of Marsala. It’s a late ripening varietal, typically grown on bush vines, and needs a warm to hot climate to prosper – it is therefore no surprise that it has thrived on the sundrenched hills of Sicily for over 2000 years. More recently its potential for creating refreshing dry whites bursting with flavour has come to the fore.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with a glimmer of green skirting the edges and a watery hue. Lifted aromas of delicately spiced pear, lime and green apple are intermeshed with some fresh Mediterranean herb and slatey mineral notes. Friuli, in the far northeast of Italy, has a reputation for making the country's best white wines. Winemaker Justin Bubb explains, "The key to this region is the difference in diurnal temperature. In the growing season the days are very warm but the nights freezing. This allows a nice, long ripening and wonderful aromatics for the white wines".
From a 30-year-old site in San Martino al Tagliamento, near Pordenone, the vineyard sits at the base of the Alps and the soils are a mix of clay and alpine gravel from alluvial deposits.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Aromas of pear, red apple and honeysuckle mix with some subtle quince and wet stone notes. Making a supple entrance are delicious pear and apple fruits which overlay quince, subtle dried honey and wet stone elements. Finishes dry with a lick of brisk acidity enlivening what is a beautifully shaped conclusion.

The Greco grape variety is thought to have been brought to Southern Italy from Greece more than 2500 years ago. Sitting in the high altitude district of San Paolo which is situated within the commune of Tufo is what is considered by many critics as one of Italy’s best white wine producers and the number one producer of Greco di Tufo – Benito Ferrara. Fourth-generation viticulturalists Gabriella Ferrara and her husband Sergio run the estate with the assistance of oenologist Paolo Caciorgna who worked alongside Italy’s most famous consultant Giulio Gambelli for many years.
Fruit was sourced from vines aged between 5 to 60 years old.

    Other Reviews....
The 2021 Greco di Tufo Terre d'Uva opens with a bouquet of tropical green melon, exotic florals and a spritz of lime. This is texturally deep, almost oily in feel, balanced by saline-minerals and crisp green apple. The Terre d'Uva finishes with a bitter tension, pinching at the cheeks with sour citrus while leaving the mouth watering for more. This zesty Greco will win a lot of hearts. Drink 2023 - 2026.

Located in the Ligurian Riviera at Albenga between the hills and the Mediterranean sea, Cascina Fèipu was founded in 1960’s when Agostino Parodi began converting his father’s (Filippo – Fèipu in dialect) orchards to grape growing. Since there were no appellations for Ligurian wine at the time, Agostino chose to name the winery after his father and their locality, Massaretti.
The vineyards are planted on sandy alluvial soil and enjoys striking diurnal temperature shifts thanks to the alternation between winds from the sea during the day and from the land at night. These two factors combine to provide the perfect home for Pigato to develop their full aromatic potential, giving light wines that are easy to drink but more elegant and complex.
Pigato is also known as Vermentino. Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted pear skin, lime and green apple scents intermingle with some guava, fresh herb and stony mineral notes. Delicious pear, red apple skin and lime flavours show terrific intensity and textural volume across the mouth watering palate. Coming from the commune of Ronca in the heart of Garganega country, Monte Ronca is a creation of local specialist, Antonio Fattori, an acknowledged Soave-master. Most the fruit for wines comes from the hills to the north of this commune, a specific site called Monte Calvarino, which peaks at 680 m (the inactive volcano from which the wine takes its name). At this altitude, this beautiful cool site provides a perfect environment for a higher grade, single site Soave. The hills around Monte Calvarino (in comparative terms to the region in general) are particularly steep, and from a viticultural perspective, pose some challenges. But to Antonio, this is critical to capture depth of flavour and structure, as the best expressions of Soave are never found on the valley floor where it gets too warm. Here, the ancient volcanic soils impart a flinty minerality to the hand-harvested fruit, while in the cellar, lees stirring and subtle oak ageing and varying levels of appassimento add a rich texture and further complexity to the wine.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinctive greenish tinge to the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense pear, red apple and lime aromas engulf the nostrils with some wet stone and fresh herb notes also evident. Delicious juicy ripe pear and red apple fruits flood every corner of the mouth with some lime and wet stone characters lingering underneath. Boasting terrific concentration, volume and brisk acidity it finishes long, textured and incredibly moreish. A fantastic example of Soave.

The production of Vernaccia in the lower Valley of the Tirso in Sardinia, has its roots in very ancient times.  Maturation takes place in chestnut barrels which are oxygenated, and the wine develops a flor, a natural, native yeast growth which acts as a protective layer, while also imparting certain flavours and aromas to the wine. Sherry is also made with a similar production method, and the resulting wine is not unlike a full-bodied fino Sherry.
Bright amber colour with rose gold tinged edges. The nose offers up a fino sherry like aromatic profile lead by an assortment of nuts including hazelnut and almonds with some salty saline like notes also present. Well rounded and silken in its feel the palate is laden with hazelnut, roasted almond and salted cashew flavours. Finishes bone dry with a salty hazelnut aftertaste.

Friuli is situated high up in the north of Italy along the border with Slovenia, and is one of the most exciting and adventurous regions for wine production. ‘Vini macerati di Friuli’, the macerated wines of Friuli, are made using extended contact on skins which are essentially white wines made like red wine. This ancient process was made new again and brought back into vogue in the late 90s by Josko Gravner (and others) who began searching for ways to make wines of the region more individual. Many of the local varieties such as Ribolla Gialla respond extremely well to extended skin contact, unleashing layers of texture and phenolic richness, along with their signature amber/orange colour.

Il Carpino sits on Friuli Venezia-Giulia’s winemaking ‘Golden Strip’ alongside their closest neighbours, Gravner and Radikon. Today they farm 40 acres of vineyards planted on calcareous sandstone-rich soil famous in the region for fine wine production. Il Carpino are located at a higher altitude than most in the region, and their wines embody the energy and fragrance this positioning grants them. Their flagship wine is their Ribolla Gialla which spends 60 days on skins before being racked off into large Slavonian botti for 2 years, with an additional 2 years in bottle before it hits the market.
Bright straw colour with amber tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted spicy ripe pear, dried apple and honeycomb like notes are trailed by notions of quince and almond. This tiny estate, made up of a patchwork of little vineyards at 700-800 metres located at the foot of the Dolomites. Each of these plots are unique terroirs and are planted specifically to suit to each variety. Although Kofererhof estate has existed for nearly 900 years, it’s only since current winemaker’s Guenther Kerschbaumer grandfather acquired it, and his son and now grandson Guenther have plotted and replanted, that varieties like Kerner, Sylvaner, Riesling, Pinot Grigio and Müller Thurgau are sited with such precision.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Drifting from the glass are aromas of lime, green apple skin, mandarin, quince and flinty mineral notes. Crunchy lime and green apple fruits are delivered with plenty of intensity and tension. Finishes dry with racy laser like acidity. Notions of flint and steely mineral characters are infused through the long scrumptious and highly energised conclusion.

The Pieropan winery is in the heart of the Classico zone and dates back to 1890. Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively.
Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village. Made mostly from Garganega grapes with the inclusion of 15% Trebbiano di Soave.
Bright pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Lightly spiced pear and red apple scents sail from the glass followed by some lime and slatey mineral notes. Delicious pear, red apple and lime fruits are energised by racy mineral laced acidity and infusions of fresh herbs. Excellent intensity with a river stone like mouth feel finishing dry and crisp. Concludes with a lingering stony mineral element on the long bristling aftertaste.

Brothers Dario, the oenologist and Andrea, the agronomist, are responsible for more than 70ha of proprietary vineyards across both volcanic and limestone sites, while championing the indigenous varieties, Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave. Telltale aromas of white pepper, jasmine and ripe orchard fruit accents. While this is a blend from a litany of sites, each is vinified separately before blending. A fine smoky plume across an effortless, tenacious finish. A delicious, easygoing and highly fidelitous expression of the region. Drink or hold.

I have not tasted this wine in a while, and it's a delight to come back to it now. Compared to older vintages, I find this blend of equal parts Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay to be quite improved. The organic 2020 Batàr (with 20,000 bottles made) offers fresh, citrusy tones with lemon curd and candied peach. This barrique-aged white also offers mid-weight density and plenty of orchard fruit, saffron and light spice. It concludes with fresh acidity. Drink 2022 - 2026.

The 2020 Batàr, Querciabella's Chardonnay/Pinot Blanc white, is laced with hints of tangerine oil, jasmine, spice and pear. Light tropical accents appear later, adding gorgeous nuance throughout. The move towards high elevation vineyards and picking earlier yields a Batàr endowed with terrific freshness and plenty of style. Drink 2022-2028.

The 2020 vintage is more herbal than usual, with sage, thyme and a citrussy character, then its typical peach kernel core. The attack is full, silky, concentrated and textured, yet vibrant on the finish. One of the most sought after white wines of Italy, with proven ability to age, Batàr originates from vineyards in Ruffoli, in Greve in Chianti, some of which reach 600m. The Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco grapes are fermented and aged for nine months in French oak. It's a very classic white SuperTuscan (first vintage was 1988) with a stylish Corton-Charlemagne attitude. Drink 2023 - 2030.

The 2020 Fiano di Avellino Riserva Tognano combines richness with verve, wafting up with a sweetly smoky blend of crushed rocks and dried apricot. This is textural with a pleasant inner sweetness up front, as a cascade of lime-tinged orchard fruits flows throughout. A superb example of Moscato d Asti.

The wine is made by gently pressing the grapes with a bag press. The must is filtered and pumped into stainless steel vats where it is held at a temperature of –2ºC until ready for a controlled temperature ferment. Bright straw colour. The wine pours with a vigorous spritz, but it is not effervescent like Spumante. Magnificent aromatic nose – very intense, with notes of muscat, raisins and super ripe sultana. The palate has weight, and a generous creamy mouthfeel supported by gentle spritz which freshens the palate and accentuates the acidity. The palate displays considerable viscosity – which was not expected, followed by very grapey flavours of sultana and raisins. Excellent length, clean finish, with very long sultana and spice aftertaste. A delightful new sweet wine taste experience. Serve lightly chilled.

Refreshing, clean, quite concentrated and with very light frizz of tickly bubbles barely there. Mario Schiopetto was the man considered responsible for bringing fame to Friuli’s white wines. He pioneered wine preservation techniques in the wine making process, something lacking in the region in the 1970’s - cold and anti-oxidative handling, epitomised by the German handling of Riesling - along with the more 'French' technique of elevating their wines in a careful, more oxidative, texture-building manner.
Schiopetto’s standout variety is Friulano which sees 7-8 months on lees resulting in a wine that’s rich in texture and flavour with an abundance of wild floral and almond notes on the nose, supported on the palate with rich stone fruits and refreshing acidity.

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 Friulano wafts up flowery perfumes mixed with notes of tropical citrus, hints of kiwi and musky apricot. It’s soothing with soft textures, offset by hints of spice and dazzling acids which enliven the expression, giving way to mineral-laced orchard fruits. Hints of young mango offset by zests of lime and exotic inner florals linger and complete the experience perfectly. This is a pleasure to taste. Drink 2022 - 2026

Buy Italian Wine Online.

Many decades ago, Australians were slowly becoming acquainted with mass produced Italian wines that reflected high yields and generally inferior-quality. They were the Lambruscos, Frascatis, Spumantes and Soaves synonymous with cheap & cheerful Italian restaurants. Since the industry has been modernised, the range and (more importantly) the quality of Italian wines has developed exponentially. The very best examples combine distinct regionality with contemporary winemaking flair. Frequently leading the way are small grower-producers at the high end of the passion scale. Nicks Wine Merchants continue to offer a selection of Italian wines as well as traditional liqueurs & aperitifs which you can buy online and have shipped to most areas of Australia.
