The 2016 Grange includes 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and was sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley, with a little bit from Magill Estate, in the suburbs of Adelaide. Aged in 100% new American oak (as always), it offers up trademark lifted aromas plus scents of vanilla, toasted coconut, cedar, raspberries and blackberries. Impressively concentrated and full-bodied, with an extraordinarily long, velvety finish, it's nevertheless reasonably fresh and tight, with decades of cellaring potential if properly stored. Certainly at least on a par with such vintages as 2010 and 2012, the big question is whether it will ultimately reach triple digits. Drink 2025-2050.

Penfolds nailed the great vintage, making a wine that is perfect in every way. The blend of 97% shiraz and 3% cabernet sauvignon comes from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate in Adelaide, in that order, and as usual spent 18 months in new American hogsheads. Its detail is superb, with light and shade allowing blackberry and plum fruit pride of place, but there's also flashes of spice and licorice. It's as mouthwatering with the last taste as the first, and 7.3g/l of acidity leaves the mouth fresh.

A blend of 97% shiraz and 3% cabernet sauvignon from Barossa, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate. This is a very intense Grange with such rich black-fruit, tar and coal-smoke aromas together with iodine and black-olive notes and an array of wild dark herbs. Almost impenetrable dark plums and licorice, as well as bacon fat. The palate has such seamless delivery of intense blackberry and plum flavors with some redder tones emerging, too. The power here is countered by such freshness and an almost elegant feel. This has such impressive, vibrant, long and seamless fruit power. Really is exceptionally complete, but tight, needs time to open. Very enjoyable now, but better after 2023.

The bold, expansive 2019 Grange (97% Shiraz, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon) spent 19 months in larger new American Oak and is powerful and expressive as it delivers a dense core of coca, blackberry and baked terracotta aromas, all well backed by toasted coconut oak. Mouth-filing, expansive and seriously tannic, it then delivers waves of dark berry flavor laced with touches of spice, leading to a rich, muscular finish. It’s built for the long haul, so don’t even think of opening for at least a decade. Drink 2035 - 2055.

97/3% shiraz/cabernet sauvignon; matured in new American oak for 19 months. A quieter release for the 2019 rendition of Penfolds' world-famous icon. A little less of the formic and VA heft of youth in this showing and a bit more approachable as a result. Deep crimson in the glass with familiar characters of deep black berry fruits, plum compote and black cherry underscored with hints of baking spices, Calvados, espresso grounds, black olive tapenade, roasting meats, creamy oak, purple flowers and earth. Weighty and concentrated with classic Grange density of fruit and tannin; persistent, texturally flexing and long of finish. As per usual will cellar like a dream, but I think it will hit its drinking window a bit earlier than usual. Drink 2028 - 2060.

Dark, dank and immaculate. The oak handling and tannic precision boast ample class. Beneath lurks a latent, molten beauty that will unravel eventually. I like this Grange. I feel that the decadent style, molten and fleshy, is well suited to the drought vintage and its thick grape skin tannic scour. Mercifully, the tannins are pliant and despite it all, plenty juicy. Firework aromas of raspberry liqueur, camphor and gunpowder, with a smear of black olive, licorella and hung meat wafting across the long finish. Best from 2030.

The 2019 Grange is 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. It's the pinnacle of the Penfolds release (although if you ask me, the Chardonnays are my favorite part) and a wine that takes some understanding prior to scoring. The key to Grange is the old wines; it is a style of wine heavily fortified with oak (100% new, AP Johns American oak), tannin, fruit (multi-regional) and everything else. In the mouth it can be an almost impossible constellation of flavor and texture to wrap the mind around. But in time, yes, in time, this wine shows its capacity for grace and majesty. Ten years is too young to open a bottle. 20 years is about right. 30 and beyond, not a problem. It is a cellaring proposition of the highest order, but in youth it can feel impenetrable. So, this wine in front of me now has toasted coconut, dusted licorice, roasted meat, violets, burnt toffee, pastrami, coffee grounds, crushed ants/formic, roasted pecans ... all of these dark and broody (and chunky) things. 2019 was a hot year and one marred by low yields due to some inclement weather during flowering. This has meant that, as a whole, the wines have felt big, dark and compressed. This is no exception. It's a product of the year and the state from whence it has come and in the mold and style of Grange, typical. It will be even better. For now, ne touche pas. 14.5% alcohol sealed under natural cork. Drink 2033 - 2059.

It's a hard act to follow the monumental 2018 Grange, which – priced at AU$1000 for the first time on release – earned a slew of perfect scores. Chief winemaker Peter Gago regards the 1989, 1999 and 2009 as 'sleeper vintages' so urges against any rash prejudgement on this 2019. Sure, it is not as showy as the 2018 was on release, but if it is anything like the 1999 when it hits its stride in 20 years' time, then patience will be rewarded. The imposing structure, concentration and sheen of new American oak remains the trademark style, but the most powerful wine in the Penfolds stable – officially Bin 95 – is nevertheless becoming increasingly more approachable in recent vintages, and this 2019 is no exception (although approachable remains a relative term for a wine with 40 to 50 years ahead of it). Initial high-toned aromas of chinotto and kirsch lead to spicy liquorice, cedar freshness and more savoury, earthy tones. The palate is mighty: bold, chewy espresso oak char overlaying ripe black berries, plum pudding, rosemary, cured meat and balancing acidity. A blend of Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and Clare Valley fruit, aged 19 months in new American oak hogsheads. Drink 2029 - 2065.

This has its customary fruit, oak, tannin and length but I was struck by the ease of this release, the comfort. It does, I hasten to add, not lack power, or impact. Mocha, saturated plum and blackcurrant characters make sure of that. Indeed there’s some booziness to the fruit, despite its ease, but the wealth and spread of the tannin, in lockstep with excellent fruit/oak flavour, makes this release another sensation to behold. This is an epic wine that doesn't quit, opening up with ripe, fleshy flavors of black cherry, Maraschino cherry and framboise. But the fruit notes are only the beginning, giving way to date-nut bread, salted bittersweet chocolate, marzipan, dried olive, green peppercorn, French-press coffee and cardamom. The tannins are filling in your mouth, but never get in the way of all the complexity, and the finish just goes on and on. Drink now through 2047.

Inky, bright-rimmed violet. A kaleidoscopic, penetrating bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruit preserves, espresso, cola, incense, coconut and Moroccan spices, along with a smoky mineral topnote. Shows superb clarity and mineral lift to the sweet, deeply concentrated black currant, bitter cherry, dark chocolate, fruitcake and mocha flavors, which are sharpened by a spicy element. A vein of juicy acidity adds support and drives a wonderfully long, smoky finish that leaves a suave floral note behind. Drink 2030 - 2045.

Josh Raynolds - Antonio Galloni's Vinous (September 2022)

Fruit from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley. It's strange that the Clare Valley, seldom mentioned in the roster of regional contributions, no matter how numerous, comes up as one of three here. Although I have to admit there's a parcel of beautiful Clare Valley shiraz that frequently finds its way into the blend. It's unclear whether Penfolds' assessment of 'Instantly, an assault of piercing VA [volatile acidity]' is in reference to a passing phase or to the deliberate retention of VA, but it's part of Grange. For me, persistent black shoe polish marks the bouquet of this wine. To one side, it's all about unbridled power, and it'll be at least another 8 years before it calms down. There's so much screaming for attention it's distracting, and senses of proportion are lost. Drink by 2050.

James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion (August 2022)

This wine comes with high expectations—as does the vintage. The 2018 vintage across South Australia (and cheekily, we could probably extend the accolade to all of Australia) was excellent. It was warm, but without incident, and responsible for powerfully ripe, serious wines. Many producers made some of their best wines in this vintage. So here, to the 2018 Grange: there is spiced raspberry, lashings of salted licorice, red curry paste, layers of forest berries, rendered lamb fat and crushed pink peppercorns to start. In the mouth, the tannins close around the fruit with the same polish and seamlessness as the 2008, possibly the 2004? Very different vintages, but there is a textural similarity for me. This is polished and glossy and so very pretty. It contains 3% Cabernet Sauvignon this year, and 69% Barossa, 18% McLaren Vale and the balance from Clare Valley. Each of the regions brings with it its own characteristics. Barossa brings the red dirt, blood, deli meat and rust. McLaren Vale brings the plush purple fruits with a side of meat and licorice. Clare brings the polish, the opulence and the velvet texture. With their powers combined, this is an extraordinary Grange. One of the true greats, which will only get better as it ages. Drink 2028 - 2058.

Such open-hearted approachability has never been so pronounced in Grange. The even-footed balance comes from a smooth, silky palate that glides on a sleek acid line to complement rather than override the robust flavours. There’s spice, aniseed and sage lifting above blackberry, redcurrant and earthy forest floor notes, all integrated effortlessly through a lengthy profile. No longer trying to be the loudest or most pious Shiraz in the market, this vintage is surprisingly well behaved. Released at A$1,000/bottle. Drink 2022 - 2062.

A substantial Grange release, poised, creamy, saturated with dark berried flavour, vanillin but appropriately so. Rarely does tannin come, when it’s as robust as it is here, so saturated in flavour, start to finish, sun up to sun down. Pan juices flow, fruit commands, tannin blows the roof off things. This is a big release, bigger (in memory at least) than the previous few releases – it has a CMYK blacker-than-black density to it – but its quality is ballistic. Take the stereotype of new world red wine, push its quality to its outer limits and then push it out yet further again, and you have this wine. Grange for the true believers, maybe not, but one for the new believers, definitively. Drink 2028 - 2048+

Much is anticipated of this famous wine from a particularly famous vintage. Shiraz plus 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruit from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley. 18 months in American oak hogsheads (100% new). TA 7 g/l, pH 3.56.
Very deep blackish crimson. Much more expressive than the RWT on the nose. This really should be a banker should anyone put it into a blind tasting. The French have criticised it for being too approachable, according to Gago! Salty nose plus really ripe, rich dark fruits. Heady – just hinting at porty – and super-healthy on the palate. So rich underneath. Multi-layered, warm and spicy. Rich and broad. No disappointment. Drink 2027 – 2060.

Remarkable, bursting with complexity and intensity but on a polished, mouthcoating and juicy frame, which makes this easy to enjoy now. Features chicory, sarsaparilla, dark chocolate and salted caramel notes that mingle with ripe black cherry, framboise and huckleberry flavors. Delivers almond paste and savory details of cured meat and fresh crushed rosemary, which linger on the long, epic finish. Drink now through 2045.

A robust Grange from a lauded vintage, this wields sheer power with such compelling prowess. Uncompromising Grange. There are rich blackberries and plums on offer, together with brazen oak and abundant notes of blackcurrants, black cherries, charcoal, cola and hard brown spices. So fleshy and intense. Dark-chocolate and cocoa-powder aromas and flavors here, too. The tannins are polished and long, extruding deep into the finish and holding endlessly. Dark chocolate, black cherry, dark plum and more. Impressive. Brazen. One of the great Granges that will drink magnificently for decades to come.

Medium to full red-purple, still bright after five years, vibrant cherry and plum fruit aromas more than handle the oak on the bouquet; the palate is sumptuous, but not heavy, the cherry and plum flavours tracking the bouquet. This dark purple-colored wine exhibits notes of sweet plum, blackberry, and cassis intermixed with some licorice, chocolate, and espresso. It is a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon that tips the scales at 14+% alcohol. The wine is layered, unctuously textured, full-bodied with tremendous intensity, moderately high tannin, and a 40-second finish. The wine needs a good 4-5 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025. This Grange should ultimately merit a higher score when it is closer to its plateau of drinkability.

A wine that flirts with perfection, and should rival the 1986 as one of the legendary Granges produced, the 1998 has one of the highest alcohol contents (nearly 15%) as well as one of the highest percentages of Shiraz in the blend (97%). Its stunning purple color is accompanied by exceptionally sweet aromas of blackberry liqueur intermixed with barbecue spices, an endearing, smoky earthiness, pepper, roasted meats, and coffee. Huge, massive, unctuously textured, and extraordinarily youthful, this impressive wine is a candidate for perfection. It should continue to evolve over the next three decades.

Medium to full red, with just a touch of purple remaining; powerful, complex dark fruits, chocolate and savoury lemon/vanilla oak on the bouquet, then a similarly powerful palate where earth and chocolate join the chorus of flavours promised by the bouquet; persistent tannins, of course. It's hard to suggest this will be regarded as a great Grange in 20 years or so, but it is nonetheless in the mainstream of Grange style.

The 1997 Grange (a blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon) looks to be a classic Grange, although slightly softer and more forward than the backward 1996. The saturated purple-colored 1997 offers a gorgeously sweet nose of blackberry liqueur, cherries, camphor, chocolate, plums, and mocha. The wine is opulently-textured, extremely soft, layered, and seductive, with Grange's tell-tale personality well-displayed, but in a seamless, seductive style. This is a superb Grange that can hold its own against the more heralded 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2022.

A blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon this wine was matured for 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Deep, dark garnet colour. The nose is a tightly wrapped projection from the glass of dark-berried Barossa fruits coupled with a myriad of barrel ferment complexities. Thereafter, a burst of honey-cured jamon / pancetta aromatically thrust above, with a rich mix of generously basted roasted meats, peat & nutmeg anchored beneath.

Upon sitting / air these characters descend, revealing beguiling elements of freshly turned volcanic earth and an innocent suggestion of oldgrowth forest floor underlay. On the palate the flavour pool primarily highlights Satsuma plum conserve alongside rhubarb / aniseed / fennel, with liqueur chocolate shyly awaiting mid-palate. Oak absorbed and hidden, not so the muscular tannins, power / extract. Nevertheless balanced, firm, polished.
    Peak drinking: 2012 to 2030.

Protocol prevented me retasting this wine prior to its release date of 1 May, notwithstanding that no one will have read these words prior to the release of this book in late July. So this is my tasting note from the Rewards of Patience Tasting held in Sept. Colour little different to the 04; tighter, more compact than the 04, yet the fruit line is glossy and smooth, the tannins (and acidity) acting as the brake and giving tightness. These are a different pair, and it will be fascinating to watch their development.

The 2007 vintage of this Australian icon was matured for 21 months in new American oak. Impenetrable inky black colour with deep black crimson hue. The nose is very perfumed displaying great intensity with aromas of ripe blackberry, dark chocolate and liquorice with an overlay of vanillin oak and toast along with some mocha spice like end notes. Dense and opulent the palate delivers a concentrated flavour profile of dark chocolate, ripe blackberry and liquorice followed by some vanillin mocha like characters and spice. Excellent structure with solid, slightly chewy tannins that appear almost velvet like beneath the enormous wall of fruit that overshadows them. Possessing trademark Grange power with very long ripe blackberry, dark chocolate bullets, vanilla, mocha and spice aftertaste. A superb ripe concentrated Grange with ample structure.

Full crimson, with a purple rim; a 98/2% blend of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon that exudes power and authority; the bouquet is already complex, the American oak making an impact as it always does when Grange is in its youth, the palate with multiple layers of predominantly black fruits; the tannins, like the oak, need to soften, and should do so well before the fruit starts to fade. Follows the Grange pattern, with 21 months in the 100% new American oak in which it finished its fermentation. A good grange, but not a great one.

Deep crimson. Smoky/dark chocolate/blueberry/plum aromas. Well rounded, balanced palate withripe blueberry/plum/dark chocolate flavours and fine grained slightly leafy tannins. Finishes very firm and tight.
90% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale. A cool to mild growing season marked by intermittent rains.

Notes sourced from Southcorp. No other red wine in Australia can rival the reputation, consistent quality or proven development pattern of Penfolds Grange. The pinnacle of the Penfolds red wine range, Grange is a rich, opulent, full bodied Shiraz, destined for a long cellar life. The winemaking process involves great attention to detail, from selecting the best possible grapes sourced from low-yielding, old Shiraz vines, through to fermentation and fastidious oak maturation. The unique and distinctive Grange style is based on ripe Shiraz fruit and stylish Americanoak in fine harmony. The 1992 Grange has great complexity and balance. It is powerful and rich with mouth-coating tannins.

    Grape Variety: Shiraz

Oak Maturation: Fermentation finished in and matured in new American oak barrels for 18 months.

    Alc/Vol: 13.5% Acidity: 7.0 grams per litre. pH: 3.32

    Winemaker John Duval's Comments:

Colour: Deep, dense, dark brick-red with purple crimson hues.

Nose: The bouquet displays all the distinctive hallmarks of classic Grange abundant, sweet, ripe berried fruit coupled with balanced integrated oak. As it breathes, the wine reveals alluring tobacco, smoked roasted nuts and concentrated blackcurrant nuances.

Palate: The palate has intense, sweet, rich fruit with pronounced yet rounded ripe tannins. The wine has excellent structure and integration of spicy, earthy fruit and firm oak, finishing with great length of flavour.

The 1992 Grange has the structure to age well with careful, long-term cellaring. Grange inevitably throws a sediment after some years in the bottle and should be decanted. A wine to enjoy with rare roast beef, rich game dishes or matured cheeses.

Much anticipated vintage for Grange and it is a powerhouse of concentration and complexity. Aromas of orange and lemon peel to start, then graphite, blackberries, plum paste, black cherries, boundless sweet oak spice, fresh cedar, tar, mahogany, roasted coffee and chocolate - the list goes on. Such complexity. Classic Grange, offering such deep, dark intensity. The palate has immense richness and depth with a super succulent and very long, fleshy, deeply weighted array of dense, velvet-wrapped tannins that run so long. The fruit flavors sit in the blackberry, blood-plum and blueberry zone with succulent, long and assertive structure, carrying through in an utterly seamless mode. The finish is tightly wrenched, in spectacularly powerful style, locking this wine in for a very long haul. Best from 2030.

Bang. The first whiff cries Grange. A lifted, fragrant, harmonious blend of fruit, oak (American, of course) and finely pitched tannins. Faultless. It's all relative, but this is starting to relax its grip. And the length is very, very special. Drink by 2055.

The nose of the 2015 Grange features the wine's characteristic lifted aromas, joined by pronounced American oak influence and bold blackberry fruit, plus hints of red meat, raspberries, asphalt and vanilla. It's dense and concentrated on the palate, full-bodied yet balanced and firm, with a rich, velvety texture and long, plush finish. Don't expect great complexity at this stage—it's much too young to show much more than the primary fruit and oak elements—but this is a Grange that should easily go three or four decades. Drink 2025-2050.

It is extraordinary how this wine has gained power, weight and complexity since first bottled; now majestic black fruits, licorice and chocolate / mocha notes run through the palate.  Great tannins sustain and support the back-palate and finish. Please move to screwcaps; this wine would live forever. It is always a treat to taste Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds’ Grange cuvee (the word Hermitage has been dropped because of legal issues). The 2001 Grange is one of the few vintages of this cuvee to be composed of 100% Shiraz (the others being 1951, 1952, 1963, 1999, and 2000). Aged 17 months in 100% American oak, and tipping the scales at 14.5% alcohol, the 2001 is undeniably one of the top examples of this wine. At this stage, it appears to eclipse the 1998 and 1996. Inky/blue/purple to the rim, with a stunning perfume of blueberries, blackberries, chocolate, graphite, and earth, it boasts good acidity, huge tannins, magnificent concentration, and a multilayered, textured mouthfeel. It is a big, but impeccably well-balanced Shiraz that should shed some of its structure and tannin over the next 4-5 years, and be at its best between 2010-2030+.

A Powerful and Concentrated Grange of Magnificent Stature

Produced from 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon the 2010 Penfolds Grange was matured for 17 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. A total saturate of colour it displays an opaque, glass staining inky black core with an impenetrable dark purple black hue. Showing incredible intensity a kaleidoscope of aromas fills the nostrils including liquorice, ripe blackberries, dark plums, dark chocolate, a hint of violet, vanillin oak, light mocha and spice. Full bodied, rich and possessing substantial presence and power, a wall of fruit hits the palate in explosive fashion delivering layer upon layer of flavours. Ripe blackberries, dark plums and liquorice are to the fore followed by some dark chocolate, vanillin oak, confectionary and spice. Firm chewy tannins act as a buffer to the huge core of fruit and provide the wine with its muscular rock like stance. Finishes with a long sustained aftertaste of ripe blackberries, liquorice, dark chocolate, vanillin oak and spice. Bordering on perfection this wine will inevitably crack the magical 100 points as it develops further complexity with bottle age.

The core of this wine is Barossa Valley Shiraz (85%) the remaining 15% shiraz (and 4% cabernet sauvignon) from the Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate. In time honoured fashion, it finished its fermentation in 100% new American oak hogsheads, where it spent the next 17 months. It has exceptional hue and depth to the colour; the smoky complexity to the black fruits (no red or blue) of the bouquet also offers licorice and earth aromas; only a great Burgundy could have more nuances defined each time you revert to the bouquet. You could lose yourself, Narcissus-like, looking endlessly into the reflection of the palate; for all its power, there is not a hair out of place, the tannins outstanding. There is not the slightest question this will be one of the greatest Granges in the pantheon of '52, '55, '71, '96 and '06. Drink by 2060.

Rich, concentrated and intense, the 2014 Grange delivers exactly what we've come to expect from this Penfolds icon wine. It's full-bodied, velvety in feel and loaded with plummy fruit, framed in vanilla and cedar. Dense, powerful and tannic, it should prove to be long lived, even by Grange standards. Gago doesn't rate the vintage overall that highly, but he says the selection this year for Grange was a bit more stringent and that production levels were just average. Drink 2025-2050.

Outstanding colour – totally impenetrable inky black core with a very deep dark purple black hue. Hedonistic aromas of ripe blackberries, liquorice and dark chocolate explode out of the glass overlaying nuances of vanillin oak, mocha and spicy blackpepper showing superb intensity. Rich and powerful with a firm tannin backbone that provides plenty of grip and structural support for long term cellaring, the palate boasts mouth coating flavours of ripe blackberries, liquorice and dark plum alongside a touch of dark chocolate with underlying vanillin oak, mocha and spice characters. Firm but polished tannins provide the support base to the powerful layers of rich fruit. Opulent muscular texture. Exceptional depth with very long blackberry, dark plum, dark chocolate, liquorice and spicy vanillin oak aftertaste. A classically proportioned Grange.

Other Reviews…. The 2009 Grange Shiraz is a comprised of 84% Barossa, 8% McLaren, and a little Clare Valley and a little Magill fruit with a small 2% of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. At this youthful stage, this deep garnet-purple colored wine puts forward a vivid expression of blackberry preserve aromas amid underlying cassis, black cherry, spice box, char-grilled meat and chocolate box notes. Surprisingly medium to full-bodied (it smells much fuller!) with taut flavors that are very closed in the mouth, it has firm, chewy tannins to structure through the long and earthy finish. Peter Gago has commented it is not as ‘Barossa-ish’ as the ’08, and it’s true the bouquet has fragrant sweet and savoury spices, the palate with licorice and black fruits, oak riding high, but guaranteed to be relegated to second place as the wine comes into balance around 2030. Drink to 2050.

Grange is arguably Australia's most famous wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia. Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world's great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy.

'The wait for this Grange release has indeed been worthwhile - arguably the finest vintage since Mother Nature's endowment of a number of stellar 1990s vintages. Just how good a vintage only time will tell, but all current indicators auger (very) well. Certainly stylistically in the mould of the wonderful 1990 & 1996 vintages.'
Peter Gago - Penfolds Chief Winemaker

VINTAGE CONDITIONS Above-average winter rainfall led into a promising vintage, characterised by mild conditions up until February, followed by warmer weather conditions throughout March and April. Penfolds' South Australian vineyards fared well, producing wines of elegance and intensity.

Produced from a blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon this wine was matured for 16 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Dark, deep red colour. The nose is enticingly fragrant, yet at once 'Grange' -elements of cola, bay-leaf, malt, Indian spices & nougat. An ethereal oriental lift of glazed Peking Duck is interspersed with fermented black Chinese tea. Oak at one with the wine, other aromatics unite to create a continuum of spice & fruit. Impressive. The palate is seamless redefined. Classic Grange structure - tight, defined & balanced, with 'slatey' / sandy tannins. Saturated fruits - blackberry and concentrated Satsuma plum skin. A darkened flavour theme of chocolate, liquorice and fermented black Chinese tea mask any overt presence of new oak, courting a long, effortless finish. Intense, powerful vs. composed, polished – an enviable counter-balance.

The 2004 vintage was outstanding in Barossa, McLaren Vale, and Magill, the regions where the grapes were sourced for the marvelous 2004 Grange. It contains 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 16 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it displays a superb nose of wood smoke, Asian spices, incense, game, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Medium to full-bodied, satin textured, with deeply layered, succulent blackberry, plum, and chocolate flavors, it has the structure and complexity to merit extended cellaring of a decade and more. The winery estimates a drinking curve of 2016 to 2050; I-d be a bit more conservative on the long end of the range. It will ultimately be seen as one of the great vintages of Grange.

Saturated purple-crimson colour; has an amazing depth to the bouquet, oak and black fruits already seamlessly woven; the longer you spend inhaling the aromas, the more you learn about the wine within, in much the same way as a Grand Cru red burgundy. The palate delivers all that the bouquet promises, and then some; it has absolutely perfect proportions to the river of flavours running through blackberry, Satsuma plum, licorice and spice; the tannins are quite active, but totally balanced and ripe. Region: Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra, South Australia

Grange is the benchmark by which all other reds in this country, and, increasingly, overseas, are often measured. The reasons for this are many yet straightforward: Concentration of flavour - Grange is decadently rich with layer upon layer of flavour that coats the tongue and scents the breath minutes after swallowing. This kind of fruit weight can only come from the finest, old vine fruit and low yielding vineyards. Complexity - the profuse aromas that leap from a glass of Grange defy the typical adjectives used by wine tasters. These are hedonistic aromas of rich ripe fruits and spice yet with an "otherness" of which wine tasters speak of in hushed tones. Further, each time the taster returns to the glass the wine hasevolved new aromas, new interest, new reasons to get excited. Longevity - Grange blossoms with 15 to 20 years of bottle age, when most other reds have past their best, and better vintages can live and continue developing for decades longer. And finally, Heritage - first produced by Max Schubert in 1951, the '94 Grange represents over 40 years of winemaking excellence.

Vintage Conditions: Barossa Valley - a drier than average growing season with rainfall at 83 per cent of the 10 year mean, reducing yield in a virtually disease-free season. Ripening was slow. Good sugar levels and alcohols and ripe flavours were realised.McLaren Vale- good rainfall and mild temperatures.Coonawarra - a warm, very dry Autumn followed a cool and sometimes wet Summer.

Oak Maturation: Aged in 100% new American oak for 18 months

Winemaker John Duval's Comments: Colour: Dark plum with brick red rim.

Nose: Rich and complex with flashes of green tea leaf and truffle, interlocked with freshly tanned leather and savoury notes, prune and stewed blueberry fruits. Enticing classy oak (cedar) elevated, yet not overstated, by smokey barrel ferment character.

Palate: What is promised on the nose is delivered on the palate - an opulent, intense, hedonistic wine. Layers of massive Shiraz fruit and expertly crafted oak manifest themselves into a seemingly endless variety of flavours - deep plum, licorice, cedar, chocolate, coffee -all compressed into a silken, round mouthfeel. Forceful, ripe tannins are balanced by sheer weight of fruit. An excellent offering from an above average vintage. 13.5% Alcohol Volume.

Serving and Cellaring suggestions: Grange is a wine that will develop over at least thirty years in the cellar. It is recommended that wine lovers wait at least 10 to 15 years, however the wine can be, and often is, enjoyed in its youth for its sheer opulence and power. It is the ultimate match with rich red meat dishes. This Grange should be decanted before serving.

"Medium-full red/purple. Defined, dark plum/cassis fruit interwoven with well-seasoned, toasty, spicy oak. Powerful and dense palate with very seductive sweet, rich, raspberry/prune/liquorice/ginger fruit, massively structured tannins, cedar/spice oak and long, chocolatey finish . Still meshing together but destined to become a classic Grange. Drink between 2008 and 2030." (Southcorp Wines, The Rewards of Patience, Fourth Edition, March 2000)

Strongly marked—as always—by its 100% American oak elevage, the 2017 Grange backs up the cedar and vanilla notes with ample blackberry and cassis fruit. Full-bodied, ripe and almost decadently creamy in the mouth, it's loaded with substance, concentrated and rich, yet—in the context of Grange—relatively light and elegant-seeming on the finish. Only the seventh-ever Grange to be exclusively Shiraz, it originates from Barossa Valley (86%) and McLaren Vale (14%); Shiraz from other growing regions in South Australia failed to make the grade this year.

Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale fruit. Matured 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. The inky density and impenetrable presence that proclaim Grange are irrefutable, even in the cooler 2017 season, in which sourcing has been pulled back to the strongholds of the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. It’s all here: black fruits of every kind, licorice, dark chocolate, coffee bean, coal dust, even a suggestion of fruit-mince spice. A wall of Grange tannins hold back its immense force, as finely engineered as ever. The finish holds motionless for minutes, with a stature and presence possessed only by Grange, yet at every moment upholding statuesque poise, integrity, even tang in this cooler season.

This starts with a deeply spicy and brooding nose that packs plenty of (100% new) American oak, some smoked vanilla and ripe dark plums and berries. The palate has a youthful, astringent feel with sinewy oak tannin and deep plum and dark-berry flavors, carrying a big frame of fruit extract. Big, round berries strive towards boldness. A blend of Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. 100% shiraz. Drink over the next two decades.

Opaque, bright-rimmed ruby. Highly pungent, smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of cherry pit, violet candy, cured tobacco, savory herbs, coconut and exotic spices on the kaleidoscopic nose. Shows superb clarity and spicy lift to its spice-laced bitter cherry, cassis, blueberry and floral pastille flavors, which take on black cardamom, menthol and cola nuances as the wine slowly stretches out. Shows superb delineation and spicy thrust on the youthfully tannic finish, which features resonating cherry, blue fruit and floral notes. Drink 2028-2046.

Memorable, complex, aromatic and explosively deep, with a mix of palo santo, dark chocolate, black olive, espresso and hazelnut butter. It’s now 70 years since the first vintage of Penfolds Grange was made. This 2017 release was grown in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale regions (only), and for only the seventh time in its history it’s 100% shiraz (the other 100% shiraz vintages being 1951, 1952, 1963, 1999, 2000 and 2011). As is custom, it spent 18 months in 100% new American oak. For reviews of every Penfolds Grange ever made, click here.
Cuddly doesn’t quite conjure the command of Grange but it was the first word to spring to mind. It was only later that I realised that it’s 100% shiraz. It feels it. It’s a grand display of this most come-hither of varieties. Big fruit, big texture, big arms of tannin and soaring length. It tastes like ants squashed in a rolling wave of super-saturated plum, roasted vanilla riding the wave, soy and rust slipped within. It’s as complete an Australian shiraz as you ever will taste.

The 1997 vintage is made predominantly from Shiraz (96%) with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (4%) added.A very refined Grange with great power and concentration but without the bulky palate weight. Very deep brick red colour. Magnificent nose with aroma of vanilla confectionary, violets and spice - almost perfumed. The palate flavours are very concentrated, with dark chocolate, spice, ripe plum, mocha & vanilla over a very peppery background. Outstanding length and depth. Fine firmish tannins, dry yet perfectly balanced. The aftertaste heralds a magnificent finish and lasts for several minutes with plum, mocha and liquorice evident.

Deep opaque crimson. Sumptuous, fragrant, rum/dark chocolate/blackberry/blueberry aromas with some herbal/violet notes. The palate is deeply concentrated with cranberry/blueberry/dark chocolate flavours, lovely oak integration and smooth fine tannins. Finishes chalky and firm. A remarkable wine considering vintage conditions and its place between the great 1996 and 1998 Granges.
96% Shiraz, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Bordertown. Late spring rains followed a generally wet winter. Generally dry, cool conditions prevailed during October and November. A hot burst of weather arrived during summer but cooler temperatures and a week of rain during February slowed down ripening.A warm dry period followed over vintage.

Deep garnet with a touch of brick, the 2002 Grange is locked in a time capsule, like many of the 2002s, yielding a very youthful nose of red currants and red cherries, kirsch and violets with some lovely exotic spices in the background. Quite perfumed and pretty in terms of fruit expression in the mouth, the structure is rock solid, with a lively backbone cutting through the muscular fruit and great purity to the finish. If you're looking for that real "Grange" experience, best to keep cellaring it another 5-10+ years.

This is Australia’s flagship wine, admired, envied and despised, almost unprocurable and certainly over hyped to the point of hysteria. It has become an international wine icon, and the major Australian investment piece. Every mum and dad wants a bottle of Grange in their investment portfolio, in anticipation of making a quick (or medium) return on investment. Released at $400 per bottle, this wine escalated dramatically in price, reaching between $700-800 per bottle shortly after release. The 1998 vintage is legendary, being regarded as the vintage of last century. So, how good is this wine? The wine is exceptional and certainly lives up to its reputation as Australia’s No. 1 wine.

Opaque black crimson colour. Superb nose with that distinctive aromatic marker that is Grange. Perfumed notes of violets, ripe plum, cedar and spice emerge over a distinctive American oak background. The palate flavours explode and delivers flavours of great length and depth. Mouthfilling with flavours of confectionary, ripe plum, American oak, cedar, dark chocolate, liquorice and violet infusions. Perfect balance despite the firm tannin backbone. This is a monumental wine built to last.

Deep crimson-purple. Beautifully perfumed and exotic musky plum/blackberry/blackcurrant aromas with plenty of malty/meaty/apricot complexity. Opulently rich and seductive plum/apricot/blackfruit/meaty flavours with toasty/malty/savoury oak and fine velvety sweet tannins. A superbly balanced, sumptuous wine with all the hallmarks of a great, long-living Grange.
97% Shiraz, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide) and Padthaway. A mild early growing season was followed by very hot, dry weather with virtually all dam water reserves exhausted. An exceptional vintage.

The 1998 Grange will be legendary. A blend of 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, it tips the scales at a whopping 14.5% alcohol. The inky/purple color is followed by an extraordinarily intense nose of creme de cassis intermixed with blueberry and floral notes. As the wine sits in the glass, aromas of meat, plums, and cola also emerge. It is a seamless effort with sweet tannin, well-integrated acidity, sensational extract, and layer upon layer of blackberry and cassis fruit that stain the palate and fill the mouth. Its harmony, freshness, and remarkable length (the finish lasts nearly a minute) suggest an all-time classic. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030.

Deep crimson brick red. Intense plum/blackberry/menthol/mocha/liquorice aromas. The tannins are pronounced but offset by stylish, rich, concentrated dark berry/chocolaty fruit. A powerful and generously proportioned wine.
96% Shiraz, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide), McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. A fine, warm growing season followed by a cool but late vintage. First vintage adopting consistent use of signature red Penfolds capsules.

Alcohol: 12.5% Total acids: 6 grams per litre. pH: 3.60

Growing season/vintage: Generally good growing season with fine and warm conditions followed by a cool vintage. Another unusual vintage in that the grapes ripened late, but very fully.

Comments: "A good year and quite a good wine", said Max Schubert (with a degree of understatement) in 1993. Rated 96/100 points by Robert Parker in 1990.

Tasting notes:size> Intense fruit, beautifully balanced and structured. Overall impression of elegance. Great potential. (Rewards of Patience, 1st ed., 1985)

Classy. Developed, but with greater complexity still to come. Beginning to drink well. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990)

A very Rhôney wine, with a decidedly smoky Côte Rôtie style. Impressive. (Robert Joseph, WINE [UK], June 1992)

Deep red to brick red. Sweet, plummy nose with toasty oak, some development and a trace of camphor. Very good fruit intensity and balance in the mouth: powerful and long with concentration but also suppleness. Very good strength and cellaring potential. Drink 1995-2015. (Huon Hooke, 1993)

Sweet, plum-like, brambly aromas with dark chocolate and earthy characters developing. Tightly-packed, plummy, cedary flavours on the palate combined with lovely ripe but firm tannins and length give this wine both elegance and power. Has the structure and concentration to support long-term development. Another classic. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed., 1994)

Sinewy, with good cassis/cherry fruit. Tannin, fruit and oak all in balance. (Ultimate Grange Experience, Nov. 1994)

"Medium red/purple. Intense, fragrant chocolate/cherry/prune/dried fig aromas. Dense and chewy with generously ripe, prune/chocolate fruit flavours, pronounced grainy tannins and superb length. Will emerge as a classic Grange. Drink between now and 2015." (Southcorp Wines, The Rewards of Patience, Fourth Edition, March 2000)

Comments: Considered a very good Grange, with the reservation that a quantity was unintentionally oxidised during bottling. The result is variability. Good bottles can be outstanding. Won a gold and four other medals at Australian wine shows in 1973, 1976 and 1977.

Tasting notes: Colour: deep red-brown. Bouquet: huge cassis/berry/oak flavours with a touch of volatility. Palate: another monster; great fruit and huge tannin; still a 10-year proposition. (James Halliday, National Times, Nov. 1982)

Mature flavour with rich fruit and tannin. Drinking well but another big wine that needs more time. (Rewards of Patience, 1st ed., 1985)

Fully mature wine showing sweet fruit. Drink now. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990)

Very developed tawny colour. Rather faded dry nose with obvious volatility. Astringent, fiery and hot in the mouth. A poor bottle. (Huon Hooke, 1992)

Deep rich and chocolatey, dense and smooth. A big, softer style with ripe, oaky chocolate and vanilla notes pervading. Very good and has many years left. (Huon Hooke, 1992)

Lovely concentrated and textured palate with sweet, briary, apricot-like fruit and touches of star anise. Fine dry tannins and excellent length. A remarkable wine. Comments: First vintage to use Padthaway grapes. Considered by some to be an uncharacteristically soft, fruity Grange.

Tasting notes: size> The '88 [barrel sample] was in many respects the most surprising: while the much warmer [than 1987] vintage has resulted in opulently ripe (yet not jammy) fruit, the tannins are less aggressive than would have been expected. An interested observer (and taster) throughout the proceedings was Max Schubert, and this was his pick of the wines between '83 and '88. (James Halliday, Weekend Australian, Dec. 1988)

An earlier-drinking Grange vintage, which nevertheless needs another five or six years to build typical mature Grange character, and should then drink for 15 years. There's the usual rich, concentrated fruit and generous oak, the wood perhaps less obvious than usual, with plenty of plummy Shiraz fruit. In the mouth, it's sweet and full, with violets and licorice tones and no heaviness or excessive tannins. Another superb Grange". (Huon Hooke, Sydney Morning Herald, Aug. 1993).

Less oaky than most vintages, elegant even: tightly structured cherry, plum, violets and licorice flavours with coconutty oak touches, firm tannin. (Huon Hooke/Mark Shield, Penguin Good Wine Guide, 1994-95)

Highly perfumed and concentrated wine with sweet, cherry/plum/licorice aromas and vanillin oak. Rich, multi-layered palate with opulent plum and chocolate-like flavours. Sweetness of fruit combines with well-balanced, fine-grained tannins, resulting in a wine with excellent structure and great generosity of flavour. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed., 1994)

Deep crimson. Scented, herb garden/blackberry/spicy nose. Elegantly structured but well-concentrated wine with blackberry/cedar/spice flavours and ample, fine, but leafy tannins. An earlier drinking Grange.
94% Shiraz, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley and Magill Estate (Adelaide).A period of drought and September frosts reduced potential yields. Warm, dry conditions prevailed until late March/early April when a cooler weather pattern marked by drizzle set in.

The 1995 Grange is the 45th consecutive vintage of the wine that carries the flag internationally and domestically for the Australian wine industry. Penfolds Grange was created by the legendary winemaker, the late Max Schubert, who died at 79 in 1994 after a 60-year career with Penfolds. Grange's weight and concentration can be traced to rigorous selection of intensely-flavoured Shiraz grapes from mature vines in some of South Australia's finest vineyards. The quantity of Grange made each year is determined by the availability of grapes of the required quality and style. Penfolds multi-region, multi-vineyard blending policy enables winemakers to reduce the impact of vintage variation to the point where experts the world over consider Grange to be among the most consistent of the world's great wines. Partial fermentation and 18 months of maturation in new American oak adds complexity and highlights the Shiraz fruit richness. Grange receives almost four years of bottle age, moderating the raw power of youth and allowing the wine's components to begin a long process of integration and development. Despite a difficult vintage, rigorous selection of intensely-flavoured grapes from mature vines in some of the finest South Australian vineyards produced a wine that exceeded vintage expectations.Made from 100% Shiraz the wine was matured for 17 months in 100 per cent new American oak hogsheads.

Tasting Notes: Deep red colour. The nose is complex with masses of concentrated plum, raspberry and blackberry fruit aromas and hints of leather, dark chocolate and spice. The palate Displays all the classic hallmarks one would expect of Grange, this is a full-bodied, richly-flavoured wine with ripe, dark stewed fruits and mixed spices with seamless, perfectly integrated oak and chewy tannins. It is generally agreed that Grange begins to drink at its best 12 to 15 years from vintage date and can continue to improve in the bottle for years after that. The 1995 vintage is developing quicker than the more robust 1993 and 1994 vintages. 13.5% alcohol volume.

The below tasting notes were made at the 50th Anniversary Dinner of Penfolds Grange at Magill in South Australia on November 26th 2001. They were written in less than ideal tasting conditions. The pomp and ceremony of the occasion and low level lighting, together with the constant chatter on the table, all made a less than perfect tasting environment. I am sure, many of the wines would have scored a point or two higher under perfect tasting conditions and, thus the notes are to be read with this proviso in mind. - Nick Chlebnikowski

We recall when this wine was just released, controversy was created due to its high volatility. Many critics claimed that it was excessive and that it would never fade. Schubert’s idea of using the acetic acid was to help lift the fruit, which it did. The critics were silenced when the wine won a double gold in the UK.

Opaque, brick red colour. The nose displays aroma of earth, farmyard, leather, prune and confectionary. The wine is very well developed, yet is still capable of further cellaring. Concentrated, palate flavours of confectionary, earth and truffle. Velvet smooth tannins, followed by a very long earth, leather and liquorice aftertaste.

Medium deep brick red. Intensely complex smoky/meaty/mushroom/mocha cedar aromas. A rich, beautifully balanced wine with deep set meaty/mocha/cedar/vanilla fruit, and fine ripe velvetytannins. Finishes long and sweet. A great Grange – reminiscent of the 1953.
87% Shiraz, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide), Clare Valley and Coonawarra. “If you had to point to a wine which fulfiled the ambitions of Grange, it would have to be the 1971.” – Max Schubert, 1993. Topped the Gault-Millau Wine Olympiad in Paris in 1979, beating some of the best Rhône wines and creating a sensation. A great South Australian vintage. Ideal, generally warm conditions throughout the growing season and vintage.

GROWING SEASON / VINTAGE CONDITIONS: An excellent year in South Australia with ideal, generally warm conditions throughout both growing season and vintage. The result was an abundance of grapes of very high quality.

"If you had to point to a wine which fulfilled all the ambitions of Grange,it would have to be 1971", - Max Schubert, 1993.

"It was a great wine from a vintage that was great throughout South Australia". Rated 98/100 points by Robert Parker in 1990. Created a sensation when it won gold and topped its class at the Gault-Millau Wine Olympiad in Paris in 1979, beating the best Rhúne Valley wines. In its youth, criticised for high volatility. Won a trophy, four gold, four silver and five bronze medals at Australian wine shows between 1971 and 1982.

The colour of the 1971 is huge, deep purple-black; the nose is as big and voluminous as ever, showing great oak and fruit, deep, rich, lasting; the flavour is extraordinary. In no other red wine in Australia is there so much depth and intensity. The richness of the wine means that it can be enjoyed now, but this is really vinicide. It will last for years and improve as it softens. (Len Evans, The Bulletin, Oct. 1977) Colour: dark, deep red, almost no brown. Bouquet: superb, rich, complex, velvety aromas of great depth. Palate: an enormous wine with an almost chewy texture; clean yet deep fruit on the mid-palate with pronounced tannin on the finish. A wine getting better every time I look at it. (James Halliday, National Times, Nov. 1982) Deep, rich red in colour. Intense, complex flavour; beautiful oak. Outstanding, but will still develop. (Rewards of Patience, 1st ed., 1985) Benchmark mature Grange. Shows complexity and development. Will still improve. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990) ... exemplified precisely what this wine is all about: concentration without heavy-handedness; longevity without mouth-puckering tannin; fruit without jamminess. The 1971 had everything -- and then some. A rich, very youthful wine for drinking in 2001. And most probably 2021. (Robert Joseph, WINE [UK], June 1992) Great wine, with remarkably youthful colour and flavour. Fully mature, packed with meaty/fleshy, earthy/truffly, and nutty mellowness, with a hint of crushed ants. Great weight and density, high extract, superbly rich yet lively, extraordinarily complex, intense and long. Volatility is there, but doesn't intrude. One of the greatest Granges, drinking at its best now but with at least a decade ahead of it. (Huon Hooke, 1993) Massively complex and powerful wine with an intense, lifted bouquet of truffles, chocolate, cinnamon and licorice. Tremendously concentrated on the palate with briary/chocolatey flavours, lingering tannins and length, the wine is showing superb sweetness of fruit and balance. This is a definitive Grange. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed., 1994) "Medium brick red. An astonishing wine with intensely sweet, lifted, complex and perfumed prune/apricot/truffle aromas with hints of violet and fig. Silken, opulent palate with fleshy apricot/prune fruit and truffly, earthy, demi-glace undertones balanced by fine, sweet tannins and an extremely long finish. A superb wine. Drink between now and 2010." (Southcorp Wines, The Rewards of Patience, Fourth Edition, March 2000)

The 1999 Grange does not come close to such great Granges as the 1998, 1996, 1991, and 1990. Dense ruby/purple to the edge, with a bouquet of blackberries, mulberries, and floral-like aromas, and medium to full body, the 1999 has an acid punch, but also tremendous layers of fruit and extract. Not massive, but elegant and nicely layered, it requires another 2-3 years of cellaring, and should last for 12-15 years.

Growing season/vintage: A very good vintage in South Australia with a mild growing season which ended with a burst of warm weather.

Comments: Most 1982 Penfolds reds share a particular vintage character: a quite distinctive richness and fleshiness of fruit. This vintage of Grange rated 96/100 points by Robert Parker in 1990. Max Schubert also considered it "a very good wine".

Tasting notes:size> Generous, lifted "fleshy" fruit is typical of the '82 vintage. A distinctive and great Grange. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990)

Very ripe blackberry fruit and toasty oak nose, hints of vanilla and mint. Masses of delicious fruit throughout, very elegant and supple but undeniably full-bodied. Seems deceptively light when put beside other Granges, but when tasted in other company it's very much a Grange and should age as well as any. (Huon Hooke, 1991)

Like some other 1982 Penfolds reds, is developing in a curious direction. Exaggerated blackcurrant jam, crme de cassis nose, uncharacteristic and seems to lack the complexing oak of other Granges. Smooth, elegant, long-flavoured and stylish in the mouth, surprising on the finish with assertive tannin. While some believe this is drinking already, I would wait and hope that it builds more Grange character. (Huon Hooke, 1993)

Rich, sweet plum jam aromas with a hint of leafiness. Soft, smooth palate with opulent, jam-like flavours, soft tannin structure and forward fruit, A unique Grange that reflects the super-fleshy fruit characters of this vintage in South Australia. Regular monitoring of this wine's progress is suggested. Drink now to 2005. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed., 1994)

"Medium red/purple. Christmas cake/ blackcurrant essence aromas with touches of raspberry. Sweet and ripe with plum/ blackcurrant essence fruit and supple tannins. A typically flavoured wine. Will hold for many years but unlikely to improve. Drink between now and 2008." (Southcorp Wines, The Rewards of Patience, Fourth Edition, March 2000)

Growing season/vintage: A generally good growing season led into a difficult vintage marked by heatwave conditions at the beginning of March, followed by heavy rain. The result was soft, richly-flavoured wines, generally for earlier drinking.

Comments: Considered a rich, soft, fruity Grange for relatively early drinking -- a reflection of 1989 vintage conditions.

Tasting notes:size> Very sweet blackberry jam nose, very open for a Grange so young and reminding somewhat of the 1982. A big, lush, supple and well-balanced mouthful of flavour, tannic but not tough, and shaping up like another relatively early-maturing style. Drink 2000-2015. (Huon Hooke, 1993)

The nose is sweet and relatively open, with blackberry jam and coconutty oak notes. In the mouth it's big, supple, sweet, lush, and balanced with persuasive but smooth tannin. (Huon Hooke/Mark Shield, Penguin Good Wine Guide, 1994-95)

Ripe, fragrant, raspberry/blackberry aromas with a hint of aniseed. Sweet, soft palate with luscious, spicy, blackberry-like fruit and supple, balanced tannins. The oak component is temporarily dominated by fruit. This is a lovely but relatively early-maturing Grange. Drink 1998-2010. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed., 1994)

Deep crimson brick red. Liquorice/dried fig/baked red fruit aromas. A powerfully concentrated andmuscular wine with chocolate/raisin fruit, earthy nuances and a touch of American oak. The tannins are soupy and dense and build up very chalky and dry at the finish. Will it ever soften out?
89% Shiraz, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide), Modbury Vineyard (Adelaide), Clare Valley and Coonawarra. A warm, hot, drought-affected summer followed by a warm, dry vintage.

    Growing season/vintage: A warm-to-hot, drought-affected summer, followed by a normal vintage.

Comments: According to John Duval, vintage conditions resulted in a "big", tannic Grange, typically savoury and robust. Rated 97/100 points by Robert Parker in 1990.

Tasting notes:size> Good Grange that needs more time to soften. Powerful wine with great potential. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990)

Very full-bodied wine, youthful and still showing "smoked meats" barrel-fermented oak character, also vanilla and coffee overtones. Savoury and powerful in the mouth with good grip and balance, very long, with chewy, mouth-coating tannins. Long-term potential. (Huon Hooke, 1993)

Intensely complex and savoury wine with smoky/meaty/spicy aromas and some toasty oak characters. A combination of rich, fleshy, chocolatey and smoky flavours are balanced with pronounced tannins and length, resulting in a wine of immense concentration and powerful structure. Long-term cellaring potential. Drink 1995-2013. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed., 1994)

"Medium-full red/purple. Very complex, briary/earthy/cedar aromas. Restrained, structured palate with sweet, cedary/truffly/ earthy fruit, marked tannins and underlying oak. An austere vintage that will develop further. At the moment a little disjointed. Drink between now and 2010." (Southcorp Wines, The Rewards of Patience, Fourth Edition, March 2000)

The 2009 Penfolds Grange is a blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon with ageing taking place in 100% new American oak hogsheads for 18 months. Fruit sources include Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley & Magill Estate.

Drink it 2018 to 2035+.

From the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate, 98% shiraz and 2% cabernet sauvignon; it finished its fermentation in 100% new American oak hogsheads and was matured therein for 18 months.

A stunning Shiraz that will no doubt evolve into one of the all time great vintages of Penfolds Grange.

Super saturated, totally impenetrable, black crimson colour with very deep, black dark crimson red hue. The nose displays great power, yet is still in it’s relative infant stages of development, with a superb kaleidoscope of aromas to unfurl themselves in the coming years. Super ripe blackberry and liquorice aromas are to the fore followed by a touch of violets, dark chocolate, mocha and vanilla. The intensity of the nose indicates that a wine of great power and concentration is to come and one is not let down. Dense, super concentrated and with power to burn, this Grange is destined for a long life of cellaring, although it’s not entirely unapproachable now. Layer upon layer of explosive, opulent fruit unravels itself on the palate in quite magnificent fashion. Dark chocolate, liquorice, blackberry and dark plum flavours, with an overlay of mocha and vanillin oak. Sublime depth and persistence and quite opulent in texture. Very fine grained, but firm tannins that are concealed by the sheer volume of fruit. Exceptionally long aftertaste of blackberry, dark chocolate, liquorice, vanillin oak and spice.

    Notes sourced from Fosters:
Grange is arguably Australia's most famous wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia.

Penfolds Grange displays fully ripe, intensely flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world's great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy.

    Vintage Conditions:
2005 saw a solid budburst and fruit set, followed by favourable growing conditions. Harvest was early by about two weeks but temperate conditions allowed for steady, continuous ripening. Warm, dry conditions prevailed during the harvest period producing grapes of exceptional flavour and structure.

    Tasting Note:

94% Shiraz, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide) and Modbury Vineyard. Grape varieties: 94% Shiraz & 6% Cabernet Sauvignon

Alcohol: 13.3% Total acids: 7.1 grams per litre. pH: 3.41

Growing season/vintage: This vintage was seriously affected by the 1982 drought, less by the devastating Ash Wednesday (Feb. 15) bushfires and March flooding. Summer rainfall was a little more than half the average, followed by record rains in March. Vintage weather was very hot before the rains came.

Comments: An extraordinary season of heat, drought, fires and then floods, which resulted in small yields of huge wines with very long keeping potential. The 1983 Grange was rated 92/100 points by Robert Parker in 1990. "Very big and concentrated", said Max Schubert in 1993. Rigorous fruit selection meant a much smaller than usual Grange make.

Tasting notes:size> Packed with flavour... there are potent aromas of mint and dark chocolate while the wine is fruit-driven through the early and mid-palate, with voluptuous though not jammy flavours. Strong tannins take over on the finish and the wine is destined for a very long cellaring future. (James Halliday, Weekend Australian, Dec. 1988)

Great big bastard. Makes the earth move. (Huon Hooke, Wine & Spirit Buying Guide, 1988)

Blockbuster Grange with massively powerful fruit and oak. Enormous strength. Will live for decades. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990)

Extraordinary concentration of fruit. It is still very closed but there's bags of tightly packed gamey/spicy flavours and a fascinating spicy/herby finish. (Robert Joseph, WINE [UK], June 1992.

Dense, concentrated, latent, with sweet, plummy fruit and obvious American oak in the mouth. One of the biggest-ever Granges, formidably robust and grippingly tannic, with no pretence to elegance. It should be locked away for the long term and will start to drink well at the turn of the century. 2000-2020. (Huon Hooke, 1993)

Dense, powerful chocolate/spice/plum/briar aromas with some American oak-derived coconut. A highly concentrated wine showing pronounced extract and tannins balanced with sweetness of fruit and obvious American oak. The wine is beginning to show some complexing "cigar box" characters but is still very youthful. This will be a great Grange. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed., 1994)

Stunning wine with harmony and equilibrium. Great future. (Ultimate Grange Experience, Nov, 1994)

"Red/purple. Intense, rich, brambly/blackberry fruit with touches of cedar and liquorice. Beautifully concentrated, with abundant blackberry/apricot fruit and plenty of meaty/ cedary characters, plush, pronounced tannins and underlying sweet oak. Super wine. Drink between now and 2020." Comments: An "elegant" Grange, rated 89/100 points by Robert Parker in 1990.

Tasting notes:size> Great finesse and elegance. Very much the product of a cool vintage, with far lower tannins and the oak a fraction dominant at this stage. (James Halliday, Weekend Australian, Dec. 1988)

Concentrated fruit and strong, balanced tannins are pronounced on the palate. Needs time to develop. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990)

A lighter-bodied Grange, but still big, this has lovely balance and fineness, starting to build the typical earthy, meaty, matured characters, but with unusual tobacco and cedar cool-year nuances. Lively acidity; very intense flavour. A very good wine without the fleshiness of top-year Granges. Drink 1996-2008. (Huon Hooke, 1993)

Blackcurrant and plum aromas combine with developed chocolate and caramel-like characters. The palate is elegant, with cedary, chocolatey, tobacco-like flavours and supple tannins. This is a "useful" Grange for relatively early drinking, now to 2010. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed., 1994)

Tasting notes: size> Typical of Grange style. Complex fruit/oak character, great depth of flavour. (Rewards of Patience, 1st ed., 1985)

Complex, well-balanced. Developed but firm. Will continue to improve in bottle. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990)

Good colour, not much brown. Earthy, woodsy, some cigar box, quite complex Grange bouquet, with a touch of crushed ants. Big, sweet, gently developed licorice flavour, fleshy and mellow. Probably at its peak: a lovely drink now and should hold till at least 2005. (Huon Hooke, 1993)

Richly concentrated bouquet showing dark chocolate, tobacco and cigar box characters with some spice. Rich and fleshy, with dense, sweet, truffle and berry-like fruit. Although soft and quite developed now, underlying tannin and acid structure suggest further aging potential. A lovely wine. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed., 1990)

"Medium red. Complex, cedar/tobacco/gamey aromas with plenty of sweet fruit. Penfolds Grange is Australia’s greatest red wine which was first developed by Max Schubert, with the 1951 vintage. Today, this wine, which has long become a curio, still commands extraordinary prices at auctions, with recent sales of just under A$50,000 a bottle recorded. In the past two decades the great Grange years are (without any argument) 1996,1990, 1986 – with 1998 being the ‘Vintage of Last Century.’ This makes the 1996 exceptionally desirable as an investment piece and a necessary addition to any serious cellar.

At over A$300 a bottle, the cry goes out that this wine is over the top – it’s too expensive to drink! Now, lets think about that notion for a moment. We have little doubt that your last holiday cost many times more than a bottle of Grange, or even a 6 pack of Grange, and at the end of the day what is it that you have? Fond memories, a collection of happy pics, and an overburdened credit card. Grange offers all that, plus – it has become a tradeable commodity – a highly desirable and saleable wine that will continue to escalate in value over the next 10-30 years.

The dedicated wine collectors will argue, that wine for investment is an athema – and should only be purchased to consume. We have no argument with either case, - collect to drink or invest, either way, happiness will come to you in time.

Penfolds Grange is a National Living Treasure and an International Wine Icon. The 1996 Grange is far too young to drink at this point in time, but it must be tasted to determine its potential. To be fair, the wine was not rested and opened just a day after it arrived - a tough call by any measure. The wine is monumental in its structure and clearly built to last the next 30 years - it is also very much in the traditional mould of Grange and certainly reflects top quality fruit from a Great Vintage.

A great contemporary Grange. Opaque crimson colour. Aroma of violets, spice, vanilla, confectionary, blackberry and plum. Mouthfilling palate – a total concentrate with flavours of blackberry, blackpepper, vanilla, oak and plum in great abundance. Very youthful. Fine grained, firmish tannins, yet perfectly balanced.
    Cellar 15-20 years (2017-2022)
    Alc/Vol: 14.0%

     First Tasted: May 2001

Totally opaque colour with deep crimson hues. The nose is initially rather closed and as the wine reaches room temperature, the aroma slowly unfold. Concentrate of blackberry, vanilla and blackpepper aromas begin to evolve. This wine is in no hurry to display its virtues. The palate is tight and clearly made of very solid 'foundations'. No immediate sex appeal here, just the promise of a great experience sometime down the track. Coax the wine and the plum, spice and strong blackpepper flavours begin to evolve. Outstanding marriage of fruit and oak, nothing is obvious, yet nothing is missing. The tannins are fine, very firm and totally necessary for the degree of concentrated fruit. Slowly as the wine warms, so the length of the palate increases, and an exceptionally long aftertaste manifests itself. This is a great Grange. Solid, concentrated, very firm, yet still yielding enough flavour and structure to demonstrate its deserved status as Australia's greatest red wine. Cellar 15-30 years.

GROWING SEASON / VINTAGE: A dry growing season followed by a cool vintage.

COMMENTS: This was the last wine made in the open, wax-lined concrete fermenters at the Magill winery. Subsequent vintages have been made at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley. Considered a good wine from an undistinguished vintage. Nevertheless, won a trophy, five gold, four silver and six bronze medals between 1974 and 1982.

Tasting Notes:SIZE> Colour: medium deep red. Bouquet: particularly complex sweet oak and ripe fruit, something of a surprise. Palate: does not quite live up to the bouquet; much lighter style; sweet but not oxidised. (James Halliday, National Times, Nov. 1982)

Shows some bottle development. Good depth of fruit flavour and sweet oak. Quite complex. Ready to be enjoyed. (Rewards of Patience, 1st ed., 1985)

Complexity and balance make for an attractive mouthful. Good drinking. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990)

Meaty, slightly "animal", mature nose. Lovely, warm, generous wine in the mouth, fleshy and dense with high extract. At its peak. Drink now till around 2000. (Huon Hooke, 1992)

Meaty bouquet with hints of licorice and sweet chocolate. Sweet toffee and chocolate flavours on the palate, combined with medium extract and good tannin structure result in a richly textured and generously-flavoured wine. A lighter-bodied Grange. Fully mature, with fruit, oak and aged characters all integrated. Some sweetness remains. (Ultimate Grange Experience, Nov. 1994)

"Medium brick red. Chamomile, citrus peel and chocolate/berry aromas with touches of soft leather. Very big and mouthfilling with sweet, stocky fruit and notes of tar, leather and nutmeg. Firm, gripping tannins and long finish. More structured style but still has a very good core of fruit sweetness. Drink now." (Southcorp Wines, The Rewards of Patience, Fourth Edition, March 2000)

Deep crimson. Very scented apricot/camomile/dark berry/smoky aromas with faint hints of mint. The palate is rich and concentrated with apricot/prune/chocolate flavours and supple grainy tannins. Finishes quite firm. An earlier maturing wine from the latest Grange vintage on record.
86% Shiraz, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley andCoonawarra. A very wet growing season was followed by warm, drier conditions, resulting in a very late but sound quality vintage fruit. An Indian Summer in Coonawarra delivered fully ripened fruit.

Grange is the benchmark by which all other reds in Australia, and, increasingly, overseas, are often measured. Further, each time the taster returns to the glass the wine has evolved new aromas, new interest, new reasons to get excited. Longevity - Grange blossoms with 15 to 20 years of bottle age, when most other reds have past their best, and better vintages can live and continue developing for decades longer. And finally, Heritage - first produced by Max Schubert in 1951, the '93 Grange represents over 40 years ofwinemaking excellence.

Vintage Conditions: In many years Grange is a law unto itself, producing wines with a balance and concentration of flavour that seem to defy, or at least exceed, vintage expectations. 1993 was a very good vintage for Barossa Shiraz. It is an outstanding year for Grange.

Oak Maturation: Matured in 100% new American oak for 18 months.

    Alc/Vol: 13.5% Acidity: 7.3 pH 3.55

    Winemaker John Duval's Comments:size>

Colour: Dense plum red merging to brick red on rims.

Nose: Intense blackcurrant and plum with malt, fig and licorice aromas that leap from the glass. This has all the characters of a classic Grange.

Palate: What is promised on the nose is delivered on the palate - a powerful, concentrated, opulent wine. Layers of Shiraz fruit and first class oak manifest themselves into a seemingly endless variety of flavours - deep plum, licorice, black olive, chocolate, cedar, coffee, etc, all compressed into a silken, round mouthfeel. Forceful, ripe tannins are balanced by sheer weight of fruit. It is hard to believe that 100% new American oak was used - the intensity of fruit has all but soaked it up.

Serving and Cellaring suggestions: As mentioned above, Grange is a wine that will develop over at least thirty years in the cellar. It is recommended that wine lovers wait at least 10 to 15 years however the wine can be, and often is, enjoyed in its youth for its sheer opulence and power. It is the ultimate match with rich red meat dishes.

"Medium-full red/purple. Deep, intense blackberry/gamey aromas with touches of camphor. Sweet and ripe with plum/cassis, slightly gamey fruit, loose-knit but gripping tannin structure and good overall length. Probably a medium-term wine. Drink between 2005 and 2018." Dense red-purple; the typically rich and powerful bouquet has layers of dark berry fruit and integrated and balanced oak. What makes it unusual is the distinct hint of chocolate, which appears again on the silkily powerful palate. Here there is an array of all of the fruit flavours one could possibly expect, but once again that touch of dark Swiss chocolate adding an intriguing note. The oak balance and integration is better than any five-year-old Grange I can remember, the tannins perfectly balanced into the bargain.

A substantial 11% of the 1994 Grange is Cabernet Sauvignon, and it's most clearly apparent on the elegant, leafy, floral nose. On the palate, it's more clearly Grange and Shiraz-like, with plenty of weight and richness along with flavors of dried fruit, roasted meat and mocha, but there's also a sense that it's starting to lighten and become approachable/mature. Drink now or hold up to another 10 years or so.

Grange is both Penfolds and arguably Australia’s most famous wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. The 2002 vintage is produced from a blend of 99% Shiraz and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 15 months in new American oak hogsheads.

A spectacular Grange – that needs decades to fully express itself. Totally opaque, black purple colour with black purple hue. Superb nose – perfumed with violet, spice top notes. The palate is structured in such a way as to slowly release its flavour compounds over many decades. Flavours of vanilla, spice and liquorice allsorts – followed by a black pepper back palate. Perfect balance. Very long aftertaste of spice and black pepper. A collectors Grange.

Last but not least is Australia’s most famous wine, the 2002 Shiraz “Grange”. The 2002 version was sourced from 77.5% Barossa Valley and 22.5% from McLaren Vale. Included in the blend is 1.5% Cabernet Sauvignon. It spent 17 months in 100% new American oak. Opaque purple, it gives off an ethereal bouquet of violets, saddle leather, blueberry, blackberry, pencil lead, and chocolate. This is followed by a full-bodied wine with tremendous concentration, multiple layers of flavor, ripe tannins, and great balance. Thick and rich, with a 60-second finish, it will slowly blossom over the next 15-20 years and provide pleasure through 2050. It is a legend in the making! Penfolds, arguably Australia’s most famous winery, continues to perform at a high level under the leadership of Head Winemaker, Peter Gago.

Starred in the October 2007 Rewards of Patience tasting, just as it did when first released. A wonderful bouquet of a multitude of dark fruit aromas, the palate with impeccable texture and balance; a seamless array of blackberry, spice and licorice flavours, oak perfectly pitched. Destined to become of the great Granges.

Medium brick red. Complex mushroom/cedar/cigar box aromas. The palate is quite structured with mushroom/cedar flavours and some raisin/leathery notes. The tannins are quite leafy and muscular, but balanced by a core of fruit sweetness. Finishes very firm. Beginning to lose fruit.
90% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley and Magill Estate (Adelaide). A dry, mild growing season and vintage.

Made from a blend of 90% Shiraz and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

    Alcohol: 11.5 %

Vintage Conditions: Dry growing season with rainfall 40% less than normal. Mild, dry conditions at vintage.

  • The bin numbering for Grange was standardised with this vintage. Previous bottlings reflect the actual numbers of various storage "bins" in which Grange was stored in Sydney and Adelaide. This wine is a favourite of Don Ditter, who worked at Penfolds from 1946 and succeeded Max Schubert as Chief Winemaker in 1975.
  • Rated 86/100 points by Robert Parker in 1990. Won a trophy, two gold and one bronze medal at Australian shows in 1975.

Tasting notes: size>Colour: medium deep red with a touch of brown on the rim, good for age. Bouquet: lively fruit with camphor overtones; fresh and with good balance. Palate: Fresh lively camphor/fruit; low to medium tannin. An excellent drinking red far more approachable than any of the other wines from the 70s. (James Halliday, National Times, Nov. 1982)

Firm, mature fruit/oak balance. Drinking well and nearing peak. (Rewards of Patience, 1st ed., 1985)

Mature, complex "licorice" flavours. Holding well. Good drinking. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990)

A sturdy wine, very big and firm. Starting to drink well, but fairly tannic and could still be cellared. (Huon Hooke, 1993)

Fragrant, yet also earthy/gamey aromas with some sweet fruit character. Multi-layered palate with complex flavours of cedar, plum, leather and earth. At the "leaner" end of the Grange spectrum, butnevertheless an attractive wine that is probably at the peak of its development. Will hold. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed.,1994)

Soft, mellow and mature with honey, chocolate and raisin-like fruit. (Ultimate Grange Experience, Nov. 1994)

"Medium brick red. Complex, mature smoked oyster and truffle aromas with some stocky sweetness. Palate beginning to fade, with some sweet but over-developed fruit and earthy/ leather characters. Plenty of grip but drying out. Drink now." (Southcorp Wines, The Rewards of Patience, Fourth Edition, March 2000)

This Australian wine is characterised by unparalleled quality – a testimony to its integrity and origins amongst the many passing fads of the winemaking world. With its opulent textures and exceptional flavour packing a profound punch, this standout creation requires medium to long-term cellaring to really come into its own. During this time, Grange will develop into a truly indulgent experience that you will appreciate from the first to the last sip. Richly textured, intensely concentrated and packed with fruit sweetness, these wines, regardless of vintage, require medium to long-term cellaring. They develop into immensely complex, beguiling wines that seduce the senses.

Grange is an Australian icon and represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising. It has bypassed the fads and trends of modern winemaking in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. Penfolds Grange is the benchmark against which all other Australian red wines are judged. To share a mature Grange, 15 to 20 years old in fine condition is one of the great wine experiences.
