Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

Is Great Southern the most isolated wine region on earth? Perhaps that northwest bit of China is? Feels like a good statement anyway.
Superb, energetic, taut and very complex white wine. Scents of ozone and green apple, fennel and talc. Beautiful perfume that reflects perfectly into flavours in the palate, a shimmering, glassy and tense feel drawn long and to a powdery, lightly puckering and, again, talc-like lingering finish. Epic.

With striking clarity and purity, this is the sort of riesling you can get lost in, merely by breathing in the aromas of fresh sliced limes, white peaches and grapefruit, as well as nuances of white flowers, gun flint and spice. The palate has a similarly complete and composed style, leading you along with pristine lime, apple, white-peach and fresh-pear flavors. Long and effortless, this is all so pleasurable. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

I suppose you say the name with no pause now too.
It’s juicy and floral, cinnamon sticks, sweet apple with ripe lime juice acidity, light powdery texture, and a pretty but slightly savoury finish of excellent length. I most often prefer the dry Rieslings from Frankland Estate, so perhaps bear that in mind. Drink 2020 - 2026.

Named after the founders, Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam. Off-dry and crafted from a plot-by-plot-by-row selection across the most propitious sites. Lemon squash, candied citrus zest, mountain herb and tonic. This serves as a transparent stream of uncluttered riesling scents, neither too dry and sour; nor excessively fruity and dainty. Make no mistake, despite its ethereal flow, this mid-weighted riesling packs punch across a long finish of sap and crunch, the dollop of sugar mitigating the grape's soprano acidity.

Not really that poisonous but an evocative name nonetheless.
Strong lime and citrus blossom aromas, very pure, quite foggy but perfumed approach. Succulent and delicious, straight up. Lime juice, green apple, a lick of barely there grapefruit pithy here. Tangerine to finish. And minerally. Strong minerally finish, indeed. Tickles with its detail, filigree and stippled texture at once. Magic wine.

Matured in French oak casks with bâtonnage. Tasmania showcases riesling's wonderfully exotic side and its high-tensile endurance, but rarely are these united as effortlessly as this. Low yields made for impressive concentration of star fruit, wild lemon and golden kiwifruit. Honed by gloriously crystalline acidity, it glides with consummate control, precision and endurance. One of the greats, it will live forever. Drink by 2040.

A combination of power and precision, mouth watering flavours of lime, lemon and tangy mandarin are thrust across the palate with exceptional force. The Fritz Haag estate is located in the heart of the central Mosel River Valley and has a history dating back to 1605. All 18.5ha of vineyards are planted to Riesling, the excellent micro-climate and deep slate soils of the Brauneberger Juffer slope forming the basis for some of the most intensely flavoured and elegantly-structured Rieslings in Mosel.  This wine comes from the blue slate soils of the steep slope sites of the villages of Brauneberg and Mulheim.
Brilliant water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Lifted lime and red apple aromatics are followed by hints of honeysuckle, pear and stony mineral notes. Terrific intensity of flavour with zippy lime and red apple fruits to the fore. Notions of honeysuckle, subtle tangy mandarin and flinty mineral elements ensue. Finishes slightly off dry with zingy acidity and a long juicy aftertaste that has a lemony freshness to it.

The 2020er Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese, as it is referred to on the consumer label and with a golden capsule, was made from partially botrytized grapes harvested at 110-115° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves still hugely reductive and only gradually reveals a highly aromatic and ripe nose of exotic fruits (mango, guava, passion fruit, and roasted pineapple), as well as toffee, minty herbs, William’s pear, and acacia. The wine proves juicy and fully fruity with quite some exotic presence on the subtly honeyed palate and leaves a sense of pure notes of mango, tangerine, and candied grapefruit wrapped into some zesty elements in the gorgeously playful finish. This noble-sweet wine now only needs some patience to integrate its elements and reveal its full potential. Drink 2030-2060.

Scents of white peach, lime and marjoram are accompanied by hints of ocean breeze and quarry dust. The silken palate brims with bright fruit accented by smoky, pungent green herbs and with a sense of crushed stone suffusion. The combination of palpable extract-richness with alcoholic levity (at 11.5%) is striking. Nick Glaetzer began his winemaking journey with his family in the Barossa Valley, following with vintages in the Languedoc, the Pfalz, Margaret River, the Riverland, Sunraysia, the Hunter Valley and Burgundy. In 2005 Nick landed in Tasmania, searching for cool-climate, super-premium vineyards; perfect for crafting Pinot Noir, Riesling and savoury Shiraz.
While working in the Pfalz wine region of Germany, Nick was converted to the local method of selecting the harvest date of riesling grapes based on their acid content and structure ‒ rather than the traditional Australian manner of harvesting on sugar concentration and grape flavour. These grapes then ferment into riesling wines with delicate citrus flavours and aromas, compared to the tropical spectrum of a riper harvest.
The mid-palate structure of GDF riesling is invigorated by sur lie ageing, which involves keeping the finished wine on ferment lees for 6-18 months.

Sourced from three high altitude Eden Valley blocks, winemaker Andrew Quin has produced a stunning Riesling that’s bursting with flavour. The 2021 vintage saw below average daytime temperatures and cool nights, ideal ripening conditions for Riesling, allowing for extended and even flavour development. This resulted in wines that possess combination of high natural acidity and fantastic power.

White peach, fig, muskmelon and lime are sitetypically accented with anise and smoky black tea on an effusive nose and a luscious, lush, silkentextured palate. One finds not only smokiness and chalky stone infusion but also a tingling sense of crystalline mineral impingement to the animated, long-lasting, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish. “I’m really very, very satisfied with this,” noted Löwenstein, “as it comes close to my ideal of ripe, even tropical fruit combined with a cooling, minerally finish. In the past,” he added, “my Röttgen was often quite baroque and very broad due to botrytis influence and a few too many shrivelled berries, whereas now we have finesse, while preserving the strength of Röttgen.” I can’t disagree with that assessment.

This proves still rather reduced and only gradually reveals a beautiful nose made of grapefruit zest underpinned by a hint of passion fruit and fruit salad on the nose, all nicely wrapped into mineral and herby elements. The wine dances on the palate and leaves a medium-bodied and beautifully elegant and persistent feel of smoke and minerals in the delicately fruity even if slightly powerful finish. Despite the touch of power, the wine remains delightfully balanced right into the long after-taste. There is quite some upside here as the wine further gains in elegance and harnesses its power with bottle age. 2021-2036.

The clear and fresh, citrus-yellow colored 2017 Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay shows a beautifully fine and intense bouquet of perfectly ripe Riesling berries with crunchy slate aromas and a tropical touch. Full-bodied, intense and enormously salty on the palate, this is a very fine and long Uhlen with sexy fruit and elegant texture. Crystalline but lush and assertive, this has grip and tension and a remarkable intensity. Another great wine from winemaker Kathrin Starke and her boss Reinhard Löwenstein. Tasted during the preview of the GG wines in Wiesbaden in August 2018.

Very concentrated, but the sleekest and most filigree of this producer's trio of single-terroir wines from the Uhlen site. The blue slate of these terraces has given this a lemon and mint character, plus just a hint of peach. Very long finish that feels almost weightless.

The 2017 Röttgen displays a white-golden color with a citrus-yellow shimmer. The nose is deep and flinty, with perfectly ripe, precise stone fruit intermixed with crunchy slate aromas. Highly elegant and beautifully balanced, this is an almost creamy-textured Röttgen with great finesse and elegance. The finish is lush and stimulatingly salty, provided with very fine tannins and a lovely grip with very fine bitters. Very long, intense and fresh. One of the classics of Hermann-Löwenstein. Still rather funky on the nose from wild ferment and long lees contact, this has plenty of pineapple and lemon zest on the palate. It may start out quite creamy, but then it turns firm and seriously mineral on the long finish.

The 2017 Riesling Kirchberg VDP Grosse Lage displays a golden-yellow color and a deep, intense and crystalline bouquet of perfectly ripe and concentrated fruits. Another rather yeasty 2017 from here. The peach, pomelo and green-chili aromas are just beginning to emerge. However, on the palate it's already succulent and racy with an intense wet-stone character at the long finish. From organically grown grapes. Fair'n Green certified. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

An enticing nose of fennel pollen, coriander, white peach and kumquat sets the stage for a silken-textured, expansive palate at once lush and piquant. The piquant elements are woven glowingly into the long-lasting finish here so as to maximize invigoration while avoiding outright bitterness, while green herbal essences lend a cooling aura. Underlying wet stone acts as a Mosel signature, and subtle salinity serves for saliva-inducement. I last tasted this from both casks of it in September 2016, and have tried to do justice to a composite impression in a single tasting note. The wine was due to have been bottled in the spring of 2017. (Note that a large letter “R” will once again stand in for “Roth Lay” on this wine’s label, but beneath that is written in tiny letters “Schieferformation Roth-Lay.” And the initials that signify Grosses Gewächs, as with Löwenstein’s other wines and for reasons indicated in my introduction, will appear in almost infinitesimally small print.)

Tasted from the barrel and still dusty in its ripe golden color, the 2015 Riesling Uhlen R 'VDP Grosse Lage' (which is always bottled late) combines super ripe, rich and intense tropical fruit aromas (pineapples) with the spicy flavors of red (iron-rich) slate. The palate, however, is stunningly pure and finessed, highly elegant and almost light whereas the finish is very long, full of salt, grip and tension. A great promise!

We tasted the three different casks which will make out the final Uhlen R. While there are differences in structure and mouth-feel between the casks, all casks offers a similarly gorgeous nose of candied grapefruit, yellow peach, wet stones and fine dried spices. The wine is beautifully well balanced on the palate, marrying aromatic precision with silky smoothness and delicately tickly zest as fruit and minerals coat the palate. The finish is beautifully pure and multi-layered. There is huge potential here if the wine’s presence and finesse will make it into the bottle and shine through at maturity. 2020-2030

The 2020er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese offers a quite rich and even slightly ripe nose of almond cream and bakery products as well as honeyed yellow peach, William’s pear, apricot, and anise, all wrapped into smoky and refined elements. The wine coats the palate with ample and sweet fruits, which give a smoother and ampler structure to the wine. Prüm's 2015 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese is clear, intense and flinty on the nose, very precise but well concentrated; however, it is the most reductive of the Spätlese quartet. Round and piquant, with a stimulating fruit and salinity, this is a very well-defined, crystalline and straight Spätlese of great finesse and elegance. This was the first – among very few – wines in the 2015 Prüm lineup to lead with a bit of yeasty fermentative “Mosel stink,” but that veil soon parted more than sufficiently to showcase an alliance of ripe honeydew melon with cassis, grapefruit, and hints of cress and lemon peel that subsequently lend incisive, piquant invigoration on a delicate, polished, infectiously juicy palate. Penetrating and sharply focused, but without its efficacious and enlivening acids turning at all aggressive, the tinglingly, refreshingly citric yet soothing and cooling finish serves up a shimmering array of stony, smoky, alkaline and crystalline nuances. Candied, spiced apple and overripe Persian melon dominate the Prum 2011 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese gold capsule, with honeyed impingement both aromatically and on the palate reinforcing the sense of relative opacity and rounded richness that the other Graachers in this year’s collection displayed. Here the sense of delicacy is nearly weightless; intriguing and enticing notes of liquid peony and lily enter the picture mid-palate after the wine takes on air; and for all of the botrytization in effect, there is a welcome retention of primary juiciness, spurring a lusciously long finish. Look for four decades or more of luxuriant satisfaction. Drink 2013 - 2053.

What a fantastic bouquet! The 2016 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Gold Capsule is super deep, intense and precise on the nose where flinty/stony notes and very fine (and slightly spicy) raisin and grapefruit aromas are displayed. Rich, lush and super sexy on the palate, with highly delicate but intense and persistent fruit and very fine salinity, this is a gorgeous Auslese from the winner of the 2016 vintage chez Prüm: Graacher Himmelreich. This gold-capsuled Auslese (AP 10 17) is rich, finessed and almost weightless in its intensity. The salty and piquant acidity is alive and kicking. Heady scents of ripe honeydew melon, muskmelon and quince betray enhanced ripeness and a hint of botrytis vis-à-vis the corresponding “regular” Auslese, as does a hint of caramel that emerges on the creamy, lusciously fruited palate. There is a trade-off here in that one misses the floral and brightly fresh-fruited dimensions that characterize most of this Prüm collection. A hint of pineapple serves for some finishing tang, but presents a syrupy impression on this bottling’s impressively persistent finish.

Picked in conjunction with the corresponding Grosses Gewächs, this leads with scents of lemon, mirabelle and quince. The lusciously fruited, glossy but buoyant palate adds an animating tang of seedy white currant that sets up an invigorating and dynamic counterpoint with the wine’s sweetness and with the faintly jellied aspects of quince and mirabelle that feature alongside their fresh fruit expressions. A cooling inner-mouth hint of mint and a faint aura of white raisin add further contrast and allure. In keeping with themes familiar from this collection’s memorable Grosse Gewächse, the soaring, superbly sustained finish exhibits striking vibrancy as well as a palpable sense of chalky impingement rare in a sweet Spätlese. What’s more, for all of the richness and flirtation with overripeness on display here, there is infectious juiciness to refresh and encourage the next sip.

Cask sample. Ripe, very pure, super-intense lemon. On the palate, pure, super-concentrated apricot. Sweet but incredibly light on its feet. Very Kirchspiel, with a mineral/stony foundation almost completely overwhelmed by the fruit now. Needs time to become more complex. Mouth-watering apricot finish, with depth and length but no excess weight. Intensely primary. Stay away for 10 years at least. Osterberg represents the most classic Riesling profile among the Grand Cru sites Kientzler work with. The soils in this east facing vineyard are a mix of marl, sandstone and limestone, and the average vine age is over 50 years old producing flinty and mineral inflected wines.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
