Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

Not really that poisonous but an evocative name nonetheless.
Strong lime and citrus blossom aromas, very pure, quite foggy but perfumed approach. Succulent and delicious, straight up. Lime juice, green apple, a lick of barely there grapefruit pithy here. Tangerine to finish. And minerally. Strong minerally finish, indeed. Tickles with its detail, filigree and stippled texture at once. Magic wine.

Brilliant water like colour with a faint tinge of green lining the outskirts. Lime and red apple aromas combine followed by some citrus blossom and slatey mineral notes. Crunchy lime and red apple fruits fill the mouth complimented by some orange blossom and subtle notions of honeysuckle. Finishes dry and crisp with shades of minerality shining through on the long aftertaste.

Georg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.

Georg Breuer has vines on 3.5 hectares of the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg. With a gradient of 70%, this is the steepest vineyard in the Rheingau. Its name derives from the Ehrenfels castle ruins above the Rhine Gorge. Heat-absorbing weathered slate with loess and loam give ideal ripening conditions for Riesling which thrives on the high mineral content of the soil. Farming is 100% organic (Georg Breuer is certified by Fair & Green). 100% healthy, ripe fruit, no maceration, whole cluster pressing, fermentation in old German wooden barrels (600-litre and 1,200 -litre), one racking after the fermentation and then a storage period on the fine lees for about seven months.

Ravishingly subtle nose with a slew of wild herbs and a cornucopia of golden autumnal fruit, this is super elegant and finely etched dry white with so much minerality through the very delicate finish, which stretches out towards the horizon. Another GG equivalent from this producer who pioneered the category. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

A stunning GG equivalent! Serious ripeness, but it somehow remains poised and precise with minty freshness that gives it a light feel. The flavors roll gracefully over the palate through to the very long, grapefruit-peel and mineral finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drinkable now, but better in 2022.

This is a bit closed and, therefore, not one of the 2019s that leap into your face. The vineyard site Pfaffenwies was initially mentioned as ‘pafenwies’ in documents from 1211, and later as ‘pfaffenwissen’ (1235). It was named after Pastor Dydo, also known as ‘Pfaffe’. This steep site has a gradient of up to 45% and is situated between 90 to 160m above sea level. The soil is a combination of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite, with loess in the lower parts. Riesling from this area is characterised by great elegance as well as pronounced acidity and minerality.

At once generous, yet finely and polished, this is a pretty serious wine for the village-wine category with a lot of depth at the finish, where positive tannins and a slate-like quality add some real complexity. The 2016 Rheingau Riesling Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg has a very clear, deep, pure and flinty bouquet of bright fruit and crushed stone aromas. This is absolutely fascinating in its purity, finesse and complex elegance. Round and terribly lush on the palate, with very fine tannins and ripe, crystalline acidity, this is a highly elegant, delicate and complex Riesling that is enormously filigreed yet tensioned and long. A goddess of the greatest finesse and elegance. The sweetness, body and minerality are in perfect balance.

Scents of white peach, lime and marjoram are accompanied by hints of ocean breeze and quarry dust. The silken palate brims with bright fruit accented by smoky, pungent green herbs and with a sense of crushed stone suffusion. The combination of palpable extract-richness with alcoholic levity (at 11.5%) is striking. The vibrant finish delivers a mouthwatering abundance of mineral salts and displays superb transparency to herbal, crystalline stony, slatey and smoky nuances.

Deep as the Grand Canyon, but only as wide as the Rhine Valley, where the river turns into the narrow gorge next to this steep vineyard site. Super-long mineral finish that's totally pure and crystalline. Drink or hold.

Nick Glaetzer began his winemaking journey with his family in the Barossa Valley, following with vintages in the Languedoc, the Pfalz, Margaret River, the Riverland, Sunraysia, the Hunter Valley and Burgundy. In 2005 Nick landed in Tasmania, searching for cool-climate, super-premium vineyards; perfect for crafting Pinot Noir, Riesling and savoury Shiraz.
While working in the Pfalz wine region of Germany, Nick was converted to the local method of selecting the harvest date of riesling grapes based on their acid content and structure ‒ rather than the traditional Australian manner of harvesting on sugar concentration and grape flavour. These grapes then ferment into riesling wines with delicate citrus flavours and aromas, compared to the tropical spectrum of a riper harvest.
The mid-palate structure of GDF riesling is invigorated by sur lie ageing, which involves keeping the finished wine on ferment lees for 6-18 months.

Alea is the ‘off dry’ riesling from Grosset. This one feels dryer than any I have had before.
It’s a fleshy, fleshy feel though the core is pulverised rock and mineral water to counter balance. Pear, nectarine, some cucumber in tonic water to it too. Slurpy kind of feel with big appeal, good sense of freshness. It’s a little looser knit, broad in its roll around the palate, but has easy appeal.

Certified organic this has a brilliant very pale straw, almost water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Intense lemon and lime aromas jump out of the glass with notions of orange rind, talc and steely mineral characters ensuing. Exceptionally concentrated the mouth watering palate is engulfed with crunchy lime and lemon fruits which are underscored by sherbet, subtle orange rind, wet steel and flinty mineral elements. Finishes dry and taut with razor sharp acidity and an aftertaste that’s scrumptious and super long.

Full-bodied, round and creamypiquant on the palate, with lush and intense fruit, grainy tannins and some prominent oak that still has to be integrated (Hoesch 1200-liter Stückfass) this is a complex and mouth-filling Pettenthal that needs some years to develop and gain finesse.

Can the 2015 Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling trocken GG top the excellent Nackenheim "1er Cru"? Wow, it can! This wine is very clear, precise and very deep on the stony and smoky—or rather flinty—nose. There are ripe stone fruit aromas that come along as more discreet and spicy, with crushed slate notes. On the palate, the minerals buffer the lively acidity and give an almost mealy, round and silky texture. This is a noble wine with a stimulatingly salty and vibrating finish. If you don't want to miss one of the greatest wines made from the red slope in 2015, then this is surely a wine to buy.

A super-elegant and filigree wine that is both deep and finely-etched with a very long pure finish that's as straight as a laser beam! Best from 2018.

The Rothenberg never fails to fascinate with its intriguing combination of grapefruit and spice. Plenty of patience with the harvest has been rewarded with a successful alliance of sweet citrus fruit including mandarin, juicy acidity and generous body, but the icing on the cake, as always, is that fine dusting of sweet spices which gets the palate tingling.

Fermented and aged 90% in oak (1,200-liter Stückfass), the 2016 Rothenberg Riesling GG has a clear, pure, deep and spicy bouquet that indicates great complexity and elegance. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, pure and very elegant Riesling with intense fruit, fine tannins and a long, intense finish. This Rothenberg is ripe, rich and lush but highly elegant, fresh and even finessed, with enormous salinity and a very long finish. Just 12.18% alcohol. This is a great Riesling that can age for 20, probably more, years. Great balance and complexity.

Still closed, though there’s plenty of smoke and fresh parsley on the nose. This sleek beauty has wonderful elegance on the palate and a long, racy finish with a ton of herbs and wild berries. Try in 2019.

Brilliant water like coloured core with a greenish tinge to the outskirts. Finishes off dry to dry with snappy acidity and an elegant yet refreshing aftertaste.

This Riesling takes its name from a local landmark, Peggy’s Hill, at the top of the range between Eden Valley and Keyneton. Fruit is sourced from long term Henschke Eden Valley growers, whose vines are up to 50 years old, growing in low-vigour ancient Cambrian soils at around 500m altitude.
Brilliant water like core with a distinctive greenish tinge to the edges. Elevated lime juice, green apple and lemon scents have a talc overlay with some chalky mineral notes also evident. Racy and intense, zipping across the palate with fantastic drive are lime, green apple and citrus flavours. Chalky talc and flinty mineral characters sit in the background. Finishes dry and crisp with a long nervy aftertaste.

The blossom-filled bouquet surges instantly from the glass, citrus leading, apple tucked in close behind, the palate every bit as expressive. The crisp acidity provides the framework to carry the long finish and aftertaste; world class for a song.

Sourced from three high altitude Eden Valley blocks, winemaker Andrew Quin has produced a stunning Riesling that’s bursting with flavour. The 2021 vintage saw below average daytime temperatures and cool nights, ideal ripening conditions for Riesling, allowing for extended and even flavour development. This resulted in wines that possess combination of high natural acidity and fantastic power.

A super intense, power packed Eden Valley Riesling.

Brilliant water like colour with a distinct tinge of green running around the outskirts. Powering the nose are intense lime and citrus fruits with notions of orange rind, talc and subtle flinty mineral scents also chiming in. Exceptionally concentrated and possessing a mouthfilling texture, an explosive burst of lemon, lime and orange rind fruits run rampant across the palate underscored by chalky talc and subtle steely mineral characters. Exceptional drive and depth, crunchy acidity leading into a very long, scrumptious aftertaste.

On the palate, this is a tensioned, very mineral and energetic Riesling with lingering salinity. Full-bodied and full of tension, this is a very promising Riesling. Tasted February 2018.

Although this has great depth and power, it is less lush and more delicate than Heyamnn-Löwenstein's other 2016 dry rieslings. Noble austerity at the very dry and super-mineral finish.

White peach, fig, muskmelon and lime are sitetypically accented with anise and smoky black tea on an effusive nose and a luscious, lush, silkentextured palate. One finds not only smokiness and chalky stone infusion but also a tingling sense of crystalline mineral impingement to the animated, long-lasting, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish. “I’m really very, very satisfied with this,” noted Löwenstein, “as it comes close to my ideal of ripe, even tropical fruit combined with a cooling, minerally finish. In the past,” he added, “my Röttgen was often quite baroque and very broad due to botrytis influence and a few too many shrivelled berries, whereas now we have finesse, while preserving the strength of Röttgen.” I can’t disagree with that assessment.

This proves still rather reduced and only gradually reveals a beautiful nose made of grapefruit zest underpinned by a hint of passion fruit and fruit salad on the nose, all nicely wrapped into mineral and herby elements. The wine dances on the palate and leaves a medium-bodied and beautifully elegant and persistent feel of smoke and minerals in the delicately fruity even if slightly powerful finish. Despite the touch of power, the wine remains delightfully balanced right into the long after-taste. There is quite some upside here as the wine further gains in elegance and harnesses its power with bottle age. 2021-2036.

The clear and fresh, citrus-yellow colored 2017 Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay shows a beautifully fine and intense bouquet of perfectly ripe Riesling berries with crunchy slate aromas and a tropical touch. Full-bodied, intense and enormously salty on the palate, this is a very fine and long Uhlen with sexy fruit and elegant texture. Crystalline but lush and assertive, this has grip and tension and a remarkable intensity. Another great wine from winemaker Kathrin Starke and her boss Reinhard Löwenstein. Tasted during the preview of the GG wines in Wiesbaden in August 2018.

Very concentrated, but the sleekest and most filigree of this producer's trio of single-terroir wines from the Uhlen site. The blue slate of these terraces has given this a lemon and mint character, plus just a hint of peach. Very long finish that feels almost weightless.

The 2017 Röttgen displays a white-golden color with a citrus-yellow shimmer. The nose is deep and flinty, with perfectly ripe, precise stone fruit intermixed with crunchy slate aromas. Highly elegant and beautifully balanced, this is an almost creamy-textured Röttgen with great finesse and elegance. The finish is lush and stimulatingly salty, provided with very fine tannins and a lovely grip with very fine bitters. Very long, intense and fresh. One of the classics of Hermann-Löwenstein. Tasted during the preview of the GG wines in Wiesbaden in August 2018.

Still rather funky on the nose from wild ferment and long lees contact, this has plenty of pineapple and lemon zest on the palate. It may start out quite creamy, but then it turns firm and seriously mineral on the long finish.

Tasted from the vat, the 2016 Riesling Uhlen R 'VDP Grosse Lage' shows a flinty-mineral, very deep, precise and flinty bouquet.

Another rather yeasty 2017 from here. The peach, pomelo and green-chili aromas are just beginning to emerge. However, on the palate it's already succulent and racy with an intense wet-stone character at the long finish. From organically grown grapes. Fair'n Green certified. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

It shows a beautifully smoky and restrained nose of herbs, wet stone, cassis, lavender, white pepper, and residues from its spontaneous fermentation. With airing fruity and riper scents of yellow peach, pear, litchi, papaya, and apricot join the party. The wine is delicately fruity and juicy and subtly honeyed on the palate and leaves a superbly focused and refreshing feel in the focused and off-dry rather than fruity finish. This is a gorgeous drinking Auslese in the making! Drink 2028-2045.

It offers a finely aromatic, elegant, and floral nose of tangerine, vineyard peach, orange blossom, whipped almond cream, fine herbs, lead pencil, and guava. The wine develops great flavors of citrusy fruits on the very precise and intense palate. The overall feel of airiness right into the deep and hugely long finish is simply remarkable. It feels quite restrained and very smoky at first and only gradually reveals its hugely complex and multi-faceted nose of anise, vineyard peach, mint, cassis, white flowers, greengage, candied lime, rosemary, and almond. The wine is superbly well-balanced on the palate where a hint of whipped cream and white and yellow peach add to an overwhelming sense of complexity and finesse. One does not question the residual sugar at play as it is only a magic support for lightness, delicacy, and complexity. The hugely long and deep finish is very impressive. This is a modern-day legend in the making! Drink 2024-2040.

It offers a magnificent nose made of white peach, lemon zest, pear, wet stone, white flowers, and fine spices. The wine is delicately creamy on the zesty and refreshing palate, and leaves a stunningly playful feel of fine herbs and spices in the finish. The after-taste is just amazingly light and playful. This is all about juicy vibrancy! And guess what, it this holds all its promises, it could even warrant a higher rating at maturity. The potential is there: What a huge success!

There is an expressive slate character here and coolish precision in terms of fruit flavors. Classy on the first palate, this is a crystalline, elegant and piquant, vital and crunchy Auslese that dinks quite well even in its youth. Based on the wine's density and piquancy, however, I recommend to cellar it for at least a decade. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

To my surprise, this delivered more effusive as well as decadent floral perfume than many a non-Himmelreich Prüm 2018, along with less of the citricity that I associate with this site. No doubt partly in consequence of those factors, there is a stronger sense of sheer sweetness here than in the other Auslesen of this collection. But of course, it is very early days for assessing a Prüm Himmelreich Auslese, that description being among those most consistently associated with ageworthiness on the Mosel. Scents and palate presence of fading lily blossom, Golden Delicious apple essence, overripe quince and Persian melon combine for a decadently heady and rich performance, with a glossy, creamy texture and prominent sweetness managing to avoid heaviness or stickiness en route to a caressingly and envelopingly lingering finish.

Rich and piquant on the palate, with a vital acidity exposition and crunchy grip, this is a serious and sustainably structured Spätlese from "the other" Sonnenuhr. The finish is so mineral that it tastes almost dry and if not now in 10 or 20 years. This is a great ZSU to be served in a decade or two. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

Marzipan and hazelnut cream lend a confectionary cast. Into the finish, though, rushes sufficient fresh pear and apple juiciness to refresh, while subtle piquancy of their seeds and a hint of black tea smokiness serve for welcome counterpoint and pushback to the sweetness. While it’s not as effusively ripe as its Wehlener counterpart nor as brightly engaging as this collection’s Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese, this lusciously lingering beauty has a long life ahead of it, even by estate standards.

Round, lush and piquant on the palate, this is a crystalline, piquant, persistently salty and stimulating Himmelreich with fine tannins on the finish that add grip and a very light, food-friendly astringency that moderates away the sweetness. The polished, pure, buoyant midpalate impression is complemented by a vibrant finish that delivers refreshing citric juiciness of grapefruit and Meyer lemon as well as wafting florality and a kiss of wet stone. This is likely to make superbly elegant mature wine.

Lush and round on the palate, this is an intense but light and very quaffable Auslese with 7% alcohol.

Very bright and vibrant, showing a good amount of zesty acidity, which connects the mineral, floral and fruit elements and brings this to a lovely equilibrium on the finish. Drink now through 2036.

The wine is salty-piquant and terribly fresh on the palate, with very fine Riesling and crispy-salty slate expressions. This Auslese is highly refined, crystalline and more intellectual compared to the Badstube, but hedonists would take it as well. A gorgeous, highly digestible Auslese. Tasted in March 2019.

Salty-piquant and fresh on the palate, this Spätlese has a lot of elegance, charm and finesse and is quite creamy textured on the finish. This is a crystalline Riesling, and its finish is crunchy, fresh and piquant, with a creamy texture and good tension but also a frisky and serious character. You can enjoy the wine today, but cellaring makes much more sense for now. Tasted in March 2019.

The 2016 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Gold Capsule is super deep, intense and precise on the nose where flinty/stony notes and very fine (and slightly spicy) raisin and grapefruit aromas are displayed. Rich, lush and super sexy on the palate, with highly delicate but intense and persistent fruit and very fine salinity, this is a gorgeous Auslese from the winner of the 2016 vintage chez Prüm: Graacher Himmelreich. This gold-capsuled Auslese (AP 10 17) is rich, finessed and almost weightless in its intensity. The salty and piquant acidity is alive and kicking. You can hardly produce a better Auslese in this delicate and filigreed style. 8% alcohol.

There is a trade-off here in that one misses the floral and brightly fresh-fruited dimensions that characterize most of this Prüm collection. A hint of pineapple serves for some finishing tang, but presents a syrupy impression on this bottling’s impressively persistent finish.

It would be no exaggeration to say Weingut Keller consistently produce the finest dry Rieslings in the world, a fact proven year after year since Klaus-Peter Keller took over the reins from his father in 2001. Along with his wife Julia, Klaus-Peter has continued to prioritise the quality of dry wine produced at the estate, and these are now some of the most sought after and collected wines on the planet.

While 85% of the estate consists of Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) sites, only a tiny proportion is labelled as such meaning there are great values to be had with their entry Trocken Riesling, along with the 'baby GG' Von der Fels.

Long, finely etched finish that’s full of expression. Drink or hold.

Very creamy on the palate, acidity seems quite restrained, but compensated for by the taste of sweet grapefruit and lemon, including juice, zest and peel. Finishes on the merest of salty nuances. Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
