Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

Loosen's 2021 Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben is remarkably refined on the nose that exhibits a delicate and flinty-scented bright stone fruit and Riesling aroma. The palate is round and playful, almost silky and very elegant, leading to an intense and sustainably saline and tangy finish with fine grip and good tension. Surely one of the highlights in Erni Loosen's 2021 GG series. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in July 2022. To be bottled in October. Drink 2023 - 2045.

Very stony and refined, this is beautifully structured and has tons of crushed stone minerality. The aromas are still quite closed, but the classic anise note for this site is already clearly present. Very long, smoky-mineral finish that has spectacular energy. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Tasted as a cask sample, the 2020 Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben promises a deep and concentrated, very complex and full-bodied wine with remarkable intensity. The wine is rich but refined and salty, well balanced and harmonious, revealing a long and intense, dense and sustainable finish. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2021. Drink 2026 - 2045.

Extremely intense, anise nose with plenty of yeast, too. Excellent concentration and breathtaking raciness. Everything focused so tightly and that really lifts the energy level. Very exciting, diamond-bright finish.

Quite straightforward on the nose with aromas of ripe, almost baked apple and the merest notion of ginger. On the palate juicy apple is joined by a little sweet citrus fruit and just a smidgeon of spice. Despite being on the sweeter side of Grosse Gewächse, the Treppchen is most lively and refreshing. Drink 2021-2028.

The 2020er Erdener Treppchen Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Onnerts and Herzlay sectors (situated just above and next to the Prälat), and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This cask sample ready for bottling proves quite non-saying and smoky at first before fine scents of anise, minty herbs, grapefruit, floral elements, and licorice emerge from the glass. The wine is superbly playful and spicy on the very long and smoky finish. The after-taste is very pure and long. Drink 2025-2035.

Dr Loosen is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, and has been in the same family for over 200 years. Current custodian Ernst Loosen works with some of the finest vineyards in the area, and since 2011 he has pushed the boundaries further in an attempt to better express three unique terroirs. Working with Wehlener Sonnenuhr (blue slate), Urziger Würzgarten (red volcanic soil), and Erdener Pralat (red slate), the Grosses Gewachs Reserve wines hail from the finest parcels of ungrafted vines in each vineyard. Fermentation occurs naturally as with the regular GG wines, however the wines are held on full lees for 24 months, before an additional 24 months in bottle. This additional maturation approach lends greater balance and a deeper degree of vineyard expression to these wines.

Due the rich, red volcanic soils, Urziger Wurzgarten produces wines unlike any other in the region. As the name would suggest, expect an exotic and spice laden Riesling that leans more towards tropical fruit flavours than the neighbouring vineyards.

    Other Reviews....
Brimming with red gooseberry and white peach plus notes of fennel, wild thyme and rosemary this is clearly identifiable as a representative of its vintage, but has some notes that are far from typical for 2016. Really concentrated yet sleek and focused with a wild berry intensity that makes the bold finish very exciting. Great aging potential. Drink or hold.

The 2016er Ürziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichter Reserve Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), is made from parcels of very old un-grafted vines in the prime Pichter sector and was fermented in oak with ambient yeasts and aged on its gross lees for 24 months before being bottled. This yellow-white colored wine offers a subtly complex nose made of pear, fine spices, some citrusy elements, a hint of petrol, and subtle scents of herbs. At this stage, the smoothness of the wine is coming through on the palate yet the finish is superbly airy, multi-layered, and complex. The aftertaste is all about smoke, spices, and herbs. This wine is clearly still going through its closed phase and is best left alone for another five years or so. But then, it will prove a superbly complex expression of dry Riesling. Drink 2026-2041.

Erdener Prälat is perhaps the greatest vineyard in the Mosel region. It benefits from its 45° slope with perfect southern exposure, red slate soil and proximity to the river. All these factors, combined with its position below huge, heat-retaining cliffs, explain why Dr. Loosen never harvests anything less than Auslese ripeness from this site.

An extremely impressive wine with remarkable power and density for this cool, quite moist and rather underrated vintage. Ripe exotic fruit aromas mingle with notes of Thai basil and galgant. Breathtaking herbal freshness and wet stone minerality at the very crisp, long finish that’s deep and delicate. Drink or hold.

The 2016er Erdener Prälat Réserve Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented in oak with ambient yeasts and aged on its gross lees for 24 months before being bottled. This hayyellow- colored wine offers a still somewhat backward but already quite impressive nose made of a touch of underripe pineapple, elderflower, grapefruit, and smoky elements. While the nose is already hugely engaging, the wine is still slightly smooth at this stage on the palate but the complexity of the finish more than hints at the greatness packed in here at maturity. The aftertaste is simply splendid as it combines the subtly fieriness so typical of the Prälat with the typical delineated juiciness of grand dry Mosel wines. This is a classic in the making! This dry Mosel masterpiece is a sleeping giant, just beginning to awaken, but has decades of life ahead of it. Extremely deep and concentrated, but no less finely delineated, this is so complex you could spend hours studying all the spicy details. However, the ripe-mango note that dominates the foreground is also ravishing. The best wine of this category (long matured GGs) made so far in Germany! Drink or hold.

In reviewing the “regular” vintage 2015 Erdener Prälat Reserve, I looked forward comparing the eventual Reserve bottling, and expressed “my hunch ... that the latter will prove not just more expressive in its early years but also longer-lived.” Well, that time is here, and at least in terms of expressiveness, this tasting unfortunately failed to confirm my hunch. This Reserve appears less successful than the “regular” Grosses Gewächs in reflecting Loosen and Schug’s determination (beginning with 2004) to capture an animation and dynamic exchange of flavors in all of their Prälat bottlings that were missing when the site was getting picked later and based more on achieving high must weight. The nose here shows an oxidative tendency that I haven’t noted in other Loosen Reserve bottlings, though in itself, I don’t consider that a problem. Prickly notes of lemon and kumquat zests, along with an incisive note of white pepper, are very much in keeping with how the “regular” Grosses Gewächs performed in its youth. But smoky black tea and Latakia tobacco, along with suggesions of wet stone, moss and lichen, take the nose here to a new level of complexity. So far, so good – very good, in fact. Furthermore, the midpalate comes off as slightly slimmer as well as more texturally refined than that of the regular bottling, which might in part be a function of alcohol having been blown off by an additional year in cask, but also and in large part of lees buffering. It’s the finish of this Reserve – though impressive in its sheer persistence – that I find a letdown. A slightly dank alkaline and mossy impression seems to be all that remains of those elements that the nose led one to anticipate, and there is a sense of opacity, with only modest primary juiciness. “This is just Prälat being Prälat,” insisted Loosen, “and it needs time to come back.” As for longevity, that must obviously also remain an open question. Drink 2022 - 2026.

It offers a captivatingly aromatic and smoky nose of lime, pineapple, prune, spices, herbs, a hint of camphor, licorice, and tar. The wine is very compact and has great dry extract, but also a smoother and softer side on the palate as ripe and even exotic fruits join the party. The finish is superbly long and structured, with a touch of power in the background. This is already very impressive but has clearly upside potential as it will gain finesse over the years. This offers a gorgeous nose of almond, pear, candied orange zest, a hint of pineapple, coconut minty herbs and spices. The wine develops a smooth and creamy feel on the palate and leaves a delicately powerful feel of herbs and spices in the long and superbly intense finish. This beautifully baroque expression of Auslese GK is still rather bold and will need a little bit of time to fully develop its inner balance. 2026-2046.

Whether it’s a function of the site or of the level of botrytis, this leaves behind the primary juiciness that characterized the “regular” Loosen Auslesen of the vintage. But it’s lovely nonetheless. Orange and muskmelon are mingled with decadent lily, headily sweet gardenia and musky peony both on the nose and on an expansive, glycerol-rich palate loaded with inner-mouth perfume. That perfume, like the wine’s ripe fruit flavors, lingers impressively, if without much animation. (This was bottled shortly after my late July 2017 visit.)

With new owners comes a label refresh for the Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling. Brilliant water like colour with distinct highlights of green around the edges. Jumping out of the glass are intense lime and Granny Smith apple scents which are trailed by some lemon, wet steel, orange rind and distinct flinty mineral notes. Racy, powerful and concentrated but not as textural as top vintages, mouth watering lime, green apple and lemon flavours are pierced by a steely spine of mineral infused acidity. Some orange rind and cucumber characters are also apparent on the dry flinty finish. Tense and laser like in its focus with an exceptionally long but tightly coiled aftertaste.

This 2022 Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling is the first under new ownership, and it leads with a distinctly different nose than usual. It's challenging to pin down, but here goes: in place of the pristine white flowers and talc that is expected, there is swirling ash/embers, straw/hay, bison grass and graphite/bitumen and a pronounced petrichor/ozone character leads the charge. Behind it are pencil shavings, Dispirin (aspirin), the crackle of summer grass and oxalis. It's salty and mineral, gray and rocky, austere and sleek. Whether it's the season or not, this is a change in style for the Magpie Hill Reserve. Very different indeed. Drink 2022-2037.

Smoky struck-flint reduction at first sniff then a suite of fruit aromas gradually unfolds, floral, mineral, green apple and lemon to the fore. The wine is tightly wound and very restrained, delicate and tense, needing time to emerge fully. Lively acidity is neatly integrated into the wine. A long-term wine for sure, a style that needs time and will richly reward even a few years cellaring.

The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett is a barely fruity-styled wine with a bright white-yellow color and a stunningly pure nose of white peach, citrusy fruits, white flowers, smoke, and a subtle dash of whipped cream. The wine proves stunningly vibrant on the almost off-dry tasting palate and leaves great notes of fresh herbs and spices in the long finish. The aftertaste is to die for as it proves airy, elegant, precise, and incredibly persistent. What a great success! The only downside is that one will need to be a bit patient and give the wine a few years in the bottle in order to allow it to integrate the touch of tartness currently floating around. Drink 2029-2041.

Egon Müller exists at a rare level of fame and respect in the world of wine, widely considered one of the finest producers who is at the pinnacle of quality. Where the likes of Domaine de la Romanee Conti sit at this level in Burgundy, so too Egon Müller in Germany. This is reflected not only with their unrivalled track record of excellence, but also with the prices paid for rare Egon Müller bottles at auction, including some of the most expensive white wines ever sold. Egon Müller is also the sole German member of the Primum Familiae Vini (First Families of Wine) whose other members include owners of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Haut Brion, Vega Sicilia, Pol Roger, Antinori and Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia).

The 2021er Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese is a sweet wine made from botrytized fruit. It offers a superb even if still slightly reduced nose made of bergamot-infused herbs, pineapple, ginger, starfruit, white peach, pear, and a hint of apricot blossom. The wine proves beautifully filigreed yet packed with fruity-driven flavors on the palate. It leaves a pure and ethereal feel in the absolutely stunning finish. This great Auslese has even some upside potential as it integrates its acidity backbone in the long finish. Drink 2031-2061.

What a beautiful peachy nose this Saar riesling Auslese has. So zesty and uplifting with stunning mineral freshness that it makes you wonder how a wine this concentrated and luscious can be so refreshing and light-footed. Pronounced tangerine note at the very long, beautifully balanced finish. Made from 100% botrytized fruit. Limited production. Drink or hold.

Even as we get to Spätlese level in the present collection, there is a delightfully cooling aspect to the 2020 Riesling Wiltinger Braune Kupp Spätlese A.P. #5 Le Gallais, here engendered by pear and honeydew melon laced with brown spices, but also lime, mint and basil. The buoyant midpalate impression is succulent as well as silken, with suggestions of quince preserves and marzipan emphasizing the ripeness and very lightly botrytized nature of the fruit without sacrificing the cooling elements or citric brightness. Somehow the lusciously lingering finish manages to be stimulating yet soothing and caressing. Citrus zest, cinnamon and mace serve for welcome counterpoint, but here is one of those rare instances at this address where I have the impression of slight excess sweetness that needs time to integrate. Drink 2024-2042.

Complex, red-apple and red-plum nose with delicate spice. Very ripe, but retains noble discretion, the succulence married to great structure. Long, creamy finish, in which the grape sweetness is already beautifully integrated. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Wiltinger braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese AP 05 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves rather restrained and even reduced at first and needs quite some time to reveal some ripe, luscious, and very complex scents of pineapple, orange peel, mango, pear, a touch of quince, blackberry, almond cream, and a whiff of honey already lurking in the background. The wine proves highly fruity, smooth, and yet delicate on the palate but reveals a more spicy and herbal side in the focused, persistent, and intense finish. Sweetness still dominates the aftertaste of this wine with Auslese presence. This beauty will really only shine in a decade. Drink 2033-2060+.

The 2019 Scharzhofberger Spätlese is brilliant, digitally precise and spicy on the clear, elegant, deep and terroir-typical nose with mango and papaya aromas. Tropical fruit aromas on the juicy, elegant, refined and seamless palate lead to a salty-piquant, mouth-watering and stimulating finish with great finesse and precision. This is Scharzhofberger at its very best and a Spätlese close to perfection! Tasted in April 2020.

Yes, this is a medium-sweet riesling, but the breathtaking spectrum of fruit aromas, from white peach through to mangosteen, renders this almost irrelevant. And this aromatic complexity carries effortlessly the very succulent yet finely etched palate through the lingering, smoky finish.

The 2019er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese AP 06 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a gorgeous and superbly subtle nose made of elderflower, grapefruit zest, apricot, almond cream, and subtly floral elements. The balance of the wine on the palate is simply stunning. Delicately creamy and incredibly subtle honeyed flavors of fruits are lifted up by some beautifully ripe acidity. The wine leaves a gorgeously airy, yet intense and persistent feel of almond cream in the long and gorgeously subtle sense of smoky slate, floral elements, ripe fruits, and fine spices. This gorgeous sweet wine has the delicate exotic presence of an Auslese GK at other Estates, but the finesse and subtlety are firmly that of a Spätlese. What an amazing success!

A taut, high-tensile East Coast riesling that's all velocity and lip-smackingly pure lime and lemon fruits with hints of sea spray, crushed stone, lemongrass, grapefruit pith, citrus blossom and thirst-slaking good times. It's got a wicked minerally cadence as it cuts across the palate; a touch of clover blossom in there, too, if we're getting picky. Georg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.

The vineyard site Pfaffenwies was initially mentioned as ‘pafenwies’ in documents from 1211, and later as ‘pfaffenwissen’ (1235). It was named after Pastor Dydo, also known as ‘Pfaffe’. This steep site has a gradient of up to 45% and is situated between 90 to 160m above sea level. The soil is a combination of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite, with loess in the lower parts. Riesling from this area is characterised by great elegance as well as pronounced acidity and minerality.

The 2022 Riesling Lorcher Pfaffenwies was harvested across six different parcels within this southwest-facing site, dating to the mid-1960s, ranging from slate closer to the river and more quartzite toward the forest. Theresa calls it a “complete picture of the vineyard.” It's fermented in Stück and Halbstück. The nose opens with a juicy yellow plum, a frisson of crushed yarrow and rock dust. The palate is concentrated and has something salty, insistent, mouth-watering and savory. Lemony brightness comes with a slight sense of lemon pith and crushed yarrow spice. It's very clear-cut, subtly nutty on the finish with much brightness and understated substance. (Bone-dry)

Alea Riesling is crafted from Grosset's six-hectare estate-owned Certified Organic and Biodynamic Rockwood vineyard at Watervale in the Clare Valley. The isolated, high-altitude site, chosen and planted by Grosset between 2001 and 2018, consists of hard red rock and variable soils making it a much more challenging site than the Springvale vineyard close by. Grosset noticed the first harvests from this site were reminiscent of European Rieslings with a hint of residual sweetness. Inspired by this, he made the first 'Alea,' taking a more European approach to its production.

A dainty riesling, tiptoeing across a crunchy beam of Granny Smith apple, jasmine, Thai herb and lime splice. I’m sure that Grosset’s Alea Riesling has always been a serious wine, but in the glass it’s more serious than ever, if that makes sense.
There’s excellent intensity here. There’s a slip of fruit sweetness but it’s gentle and slight, the clearer message one of crisp green apples, lime, minerals and tonic-like herbs. I get the feeling that Alea has changed tack slightly, become drier, more mineral, less grapey. I’m a fan. This is very good. Drink 2024 - 2032.

A flavoursome release of this stalwart Clare riesling; easy access in youth with a sense of high drinkability, concentration of flavour and crystalline acidity. Scents of frangipani, sweet lime, ozone and green apple with similar flavours and a fine, chalky pucker to texture. There's a general prettiness, an inviting juiciness, despite the excellent, powdery textural elements and a freshness overall. Reticent of aroma, yet the coil of acidity underpinning this wine is juicy rather than hard as I have often found it in the past. A workout in the glass reveals green apple, Asian pear, anise, spa salts and chalky pungency. The ripeness is on point. Properly mid-weighted, forceful of extract and dutifully long. Polish Hill Riesling is crafted from Grosset's eight-hectare estate-owned Certified Organic and Biodynamic vineyard in the Clare Valley. The gently sloping site, chosen and planted by Grosset in 1996, consists of silt and shallow shales over a thin crust of clay and gravel, resting on a bed of ancient blue slate, approximately 500 million years old. The challenging rocky soil leads to nutrient scarcity for the vines, resulting in small bunches and berries that contribute to the heightened intensity of the fruit.

It has the flesh and body that only the Clare can deliver; it is shaped by coiled acidity, and it ripples through the finish with unfettered fruit power. It's a glorious thing, this wine. It's looking precise, focused and floral through the lens of the 2023 season. 12.9% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2043.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a distinct greenish tinge to the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of pear, red apple and honeysuckle are trailed by some lime, mandarin and mineral notes. Zippy in its feel with pear, lime, red apple and honeysuckle flavours underpinned by flinty mineral elements. Zesty acidity finishing off dry and energetically frisky.

A radically cool and delicate riesling for Rheinhessen, where generosity is more or less the rule. Sleek and light-bodied, but with a wonderful racy energy and wet stone mineralty that together make this feel much drier than it really is. Long, extremely clean, lightly spritzy finish. From organically grown grapes with FairChoice certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Fritz's Riesling grows in a very small and special part of Rheinhessen called the Roter Hang, a name meaning “red hill“ due to its red-slate soils. The combination of the red slate soil, its proximity to the Rhine river, exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards are perfect for producing wines with wonderful ripeness.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted aromas of lime and red apple are trailed by some pear, wet slate and flinty notes. Mouth watering pear, lime and red apple fruits are underpinned by crisp, juicy acidity. Traces of honeysuckle and slatey mineral elements linger through the dry back half. Finishes fruity with plenty of zip and length.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Gunderloch's 2020 Hipping GG offers a very clear, bright and flinty, very elegant and slate-driven bouquet. The palate is tight, almost austere, enormously vital and very salty. This is a puristic and excitingly tensioned Riesling that deserves all our patience. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2021. Drink 2027 - 2045.

Very attractive yellow-peach character and elegant harmony on the generous, rather succulent palate. However, this is rather quiet at the silky finish. Drink now. Screw cap.

From the highest terraces in the most southern part of the Rothenberg that was designated as single vineyard until 1971, the 2020 Fenchelberg GG (Versteigerung) exhibits clear, deep, intense and concentrated yet elegant and coolish ripe fruit with a delicate spiciness on the nose. Dense, rich and juicy on the tightly woven palate, this is an intense, creamy-textured yet firmly structured, tensioned and promising Riesling with lots of salt and phenolic grip on the salty and powerful finish. This Fenchelberg was picked three weeks later than the Rothenberg GG. Due to the good water supply of the terraces of the Fenchelberg, it has always been the source for the world-famous Gunderloch noble sweet wines from the Rothenberg, such as Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA). In the past few years, Johannes Hasselbach has gained a new perspective on the Fenchelberg and no longer harvests Auslesen here. Instead, he sees the site as another top vineyard just for dry Riesling. 320 bottles of the 2020 plus some large formats were filled. The wine has the power, tension and complexity of a Clos Saint Hune and is to be auctioned in November. 13.2% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted two times in Wiesbaden at the end of August 2021. Drink 2026 - 2040.

Very cool and delicate with a wide spectrum of wild-herb and berry aromas. Sleek, precise and polished, this expands dramatically as it flows over the palate. The very long, spicy and mineral finish makes a serious statement. The first vintage of this wine, which comes from the highest-altitude section of the Rothenberg site of Nierstein. Drink or hold. Deep and complex with plenty of smoke and hot, dry-stone character. The mineral energy of this wine is enormous and there isn't a hint of opulence to stand in its way. Super-long and firm finish. This is as original as it gets. Try in 2019.

The Rothenberg never fails to fascinate with its intriguing combination of grapefruit and spice. Plenty of patience with the harvest has been rewarded with a successful alliance of sweet citrus fruit including mandarin, juicy acidity and generous body, but the icing on the cake, as always, is that fine dusting of sweet spices which gets the palate tingling.

Fermented and aged 90% in oak (1,200-liter Stückfass), the 2016 Rothenberg Riesling GG has a clear, pure, deep and spicy bouquet that indicates great complexity and elegance. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, pure and very elegant Riesling with intense fruit, fine tannins and a long, intense finish. This Rothenberg is ripe, rich and lush but highly elegant, fresh and even finessed, with enormous salinity and a very long finish. Just 12.18% alcohol. This is a great Riesling that can age for 20, probably more, years. Great balance and complexity.

Gunderloch's 2020 Pettenthal GG is clear, bright, ripe and elegant yet still yeasty on the nose. Delicately juicy and round in the mouth, with fine, crystalline acidity structure and increasing intensity, this is a still-creamy yet persistently salty and tensioned Riesling with mouth-filling elegance and piquancy. The 2023 vintage at Clare Valley produced Riesling fruit with great depth of flavour and wonderful natural acidity. Brilliant water like colour with a distinctive greenish tint to the edges. Intense lemon and lime scents jump out of the glass followed by some Granny Smith apple, orange rind, chalky talc and steely mineral notes. Zesty with a laser like focus the palate has a tightly coiled core of lemon, lime juice and Granny Smith apple fruits wrapped up in a steely structure. Excellent drive and concentration with subtle orange rind, chalky talc and flinty mineral elements lingering through the back half. Finishes dry, long and tense.

A classic Clare Valley Riesling, from the famous Watervale sub-region, made by a man with more experience than entire districts of winemakers combined. It is as good as you would imagine it should be and has been crafted with cold fermentation in refrigerated stainless steel tanks. Pale lemon hue, this is all florals and spices, limes and wet slate that are focused and pristine. Cranks up an extra level of intensity on the palate with impressive length and balance showing fine acidity which runs the length. This is elegant and finely perfumed – a superb Clare Riesling with ten to fifteen years of providing pleasure ahead of it, more in top cellars. Drink 2023-2038.

Exceptional wine that comes from the high altitude vineyards above the Clare Valley. Intense opening of floral lime and citrus on the nose with a slightly talcy character adding complexity. The length is sublime. Intense and powerfully loaded with lively Riesling fruit, it has a lemon, lip-smacking palate which is exceptionally long and lingering with the fruit and structure to support extended ageing. Drink 2023-2040.

Liz Heidenreich is a significant figure in Australian winemaking, but perhaps more so for her work with riesling. This holds 2gL residual sugar – no sweet whatsoever, but there’s a little extra pliancy and bounce. Scents of red apple, blackcurrant, pink grapefruit and flint. Flavours are also red apple oriented, doused in lime juice, flecked with ginger and finishing steely and flinty. Drinkability is high here. Refreshment factor, too. And that sense of detail ... it’s great stuff. Drink 2022 - 2035.

This Riesling takes its name from a local landmark, Peggy’s Hill, located at the top of the range between the villages of Eden Valley and Keyneton. It is produced from a selection of longstanding Eden Valley Riesling growers, whose vines range from 10 to 70 years of age, growing in low-vigour, ancient Cambrian soils at around 500m altitude.
Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour with a greenish tinged outskirts. Leaping from the glass are intense lime juice and lemon scents which are trailed by some green apple, talc and chalky mineral notes. Mouth watering lime, lemon and green apple fruits are delivered with terrific concentration over a chalky talc and steely mineral back drop. Crisp, laser like acidity pierces its way through the wines core generating a racy feel. Finishes long and zesty.

Fourth-generation winemaker Cyril Henschke developed the Henschke reputation for premium Riesling wines as early as the 1950’s from the vineyard areas of Eden Valley, Keyneton and Springton in the Eden Valley wine region.
Brilliant water like core with subtle highlights of green around the edges. Soaring out of the glass are intense aromas of lime, lemon and green apple which are followed by some orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. Mouth watering flavours of lime, citrus, green apple and orange rind carry a zesty feel across the palate. A steely back drop of chalky talc and flinty mineral elements lies underneath. 2022 Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spatlese Feinherb (Palm)
    Mosel, GERMANY
    $81. 99

    $983.88 Dozen
    ABV: 8.5%

The Weber family of Hofgut Falkenstein have been making ultra-traditional Rieslings in the Saar district of the Mosel region since the mid-eighties; there they farm about 9 hectares in and around the villages of Niedermennig and Krettnach. Erich, the family winzer (winegrower in german) works alongside his middle son Johannes, who has joined him full-time in the vineyards and cellar in recent years. Ever since there has been more of a focus on Rieslings with residual sugar. The emphasis on their work is in the vineyard, where no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are employed and cover crops are grown to encourage biodiversity and, when necessary, competition with the vines for water. With their straightforward approach to winemaking the Webers craft light, distinctive and racy Rieslings displaying well-integrated acidity from their low yielding old vines, and are bottled traditionally by the cask.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022er Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Palm (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) comes from different small parcels on the western side of the vineyard and was fermented down to off-dry levels of residual sugar. Slightly reductive at first, this quickly opens up to reveal beautiful notes of vineyard peach, Conference pear, minty herbs, and stone fruits. The wine proves incredibly creamy and refined on the delicately smooth and beautifully refined palate. The finish is more focused as zesty elements come through. Aromatic and fruity flavors are wrapped into fine spices and herbal elements in the after-taste. Drink 2027-2042.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
