Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

Leeuwin Estate Riesling, I feel, is much improved of the past few years, and the wines are brighter with notably better texture.
This has perfume lime and lemon, lemongrass, mint and a little spice. It’s juicy and bright, all citrus and green apple, and the texture is gently chalky, offering a finish of excellent length with a lime and tonic aftertaste. Lots of crunch and interest. It’s very good. Drink 2024-2030.

I have a soft spot for this wine – it’s from a region not renown for riesling; I love the green bottle and the John Olsen painting adorning it. It’s also a lovely drink. Fragrant with lemon blossom and jasmine and lightly flavoured with limes and lemons, green apple and fresh herbs. Not at all fruity, it’s dry with mouth-watering acidity, and there’s a cooling stoniness too. Drink by 2033.

Pale quartz; one of the most famous and instantaneously recognisable rieslings in Australia thanks to John Olsen's frogs on the label. The region's maritime climate means no matter how well it is made - very well indeed here - it is in a different category to Great Southern rieslings, and most is (sensibly) enjoyed when young and fresh.

A national treasure, Leo Buring has for decades been a benchmark brand noted for the excellence and longevity of its riesling from the Eden and Clare Valleys in particular. Founded by German-born winemaker Paul Leopold (Leo) Buring, whose experience had seen him work for companies like Spring Vale, Minchinbury and Lindeman, it is no longer associated with a wide range of wides, but is today a specialist riesling label. While the brand has lost its visibility in recent years, those in the know always look to its riesling collection since they still act as an industry benchmark. Do not be deceived by their (lack of) price or brand presence - these are very fine wines indeed.

This offers a more gentle and understated reflection of Clare riesling, soft in texture with faint juiciness through all the requisite citrus and green apple, floral and talc-like mineral characters in the mix. It has perfume and prettiness on its side, a pristine reflection of the fruit and mineral notes, good extension of flavour and even a little trill of chalky pucker to tame the latent slosh found in the palate. It feels well made, well judged and well balanced. A treat.

Leo Buring Leonay. The mention of that name is enough to get any riesling lover standing to attention. Named after winemaker and the rather awesomely monikered Leo Buring Hermann Paul Leopold Buring. Anyone that has said "Winemaking isn't a matter of life or death – it's much more important than that!" is OK by me. The wine is a singularity of limey goodness. Bickford's lime cordial, freshly squeezed lime juice and green apple sorbet with hints of Christmas lily, clover blossom, crushed quartz and lemongrass. Precise and focused with a tubular core pushed across the palate by fine, vivid acidity with an umami blush on the exit. If there was a Mount Rushmore for Aussie riesling, old Leo's smiling face would be the first to be chiseled into the granite. Drink by 2040.

Juicy, bath salts perfume, green apple and lime leaf. It has grip and lovely texture, a little bit savoury, a litte but fun, a fine chalky texture, all this grip and perfume, with again the apple and lemon zest bitterness carrying it long. Delightful. Fleshy and flavoursome. A very strong buy recommendation for drinking now, or over the next few years. Drink 2022-2026+

Dragon is a unique white blend from the Langhe. Originally produced by Luigi Baudana during the 1980’s with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, it has evolved to embrace Nascetta, the most exciting white heirloom varietal of the Langhe, and a tiny amount of Riesling.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle tinge of green around the edges and watery hue. Elevated aromas of lime and fresh pears meet up with notions of green apple, light herbs and minerals. Zippy lime and green apple flavours show excellent intensity over a dash of mandarin, infusions of fresh herbs and stony mineral characters. Light and zingy across the palate, lime, red apple and subtle honeysuckle flavours are underscored by zesty acidity. Orange blossom infusions and flinty mineral elements are also evident. Finishes dry to off dry with an elegant and invigorating aftertaste.

From a vineyard planted in 2005. Matured in a combination of stainless steel and small and large oak; 3g/L RS. A light, bright green gold. Mac's always had a great feel for riesling and this is another goodun' in a long line. White flowers, gentle Meyer lemon and orange blossom lead onto the palate, where the fruit is beautifully balanced by the wine's zesty acidity. Drink now and over the next 10 years. Drink by 2029.

The Mader domaine, a small family-owned winery, is located in the picturesque village of Hunawihr, near Ribeauvillé. They own over 10 hectares of vineyards, including prized Grand Cru sites in Rosacker and Schlossberg. Jérôme Mader took over in 2005 and converted the vineyards to organic viticulture, gaining certification in 2007.
The 2022 vintage at Rosacker, from vines aged 43 to 68 years near the top of the vineyard, was warm but delivered surprising freshness. With a low yield of just 35 hl/ha, the wine exhibits great intensity, finesse, and structure, featuring rich, intense citrus fruit, mineral notes, and outstanding length.

Always from diverse plots scattered throughout the hillside, the 2020 Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett was harvested in two passes about three weeks apart (about 20% was picked late). This is clear but intense and elegant on the nose that shows a finely flinty and intensely fruity but always finessed and crystalline, slate-scented bouquet. On the palate, this is an intense and juicy sweet yet also piquant, stimulating and salty Juffer Kabinett with fine, just-ripe phenolic grip and ripe and mouth-filling fruit. The wine was aged two-thirds in steel and one-third in cask and was bottled with 8.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from AP 4421 in November 2021. Drink 2021 - 2060.

The 2020er Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett was made from fruit picked at 80° Oechsle on 50-year-old vines and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (45 g/l). It offers a gorgeous nose made of white peach, herbs, and fine spices. The wine feels slightly sweet on the palate at first before a great feel of citrusy zest lifts up the flavors in the finish. The aftertaste is simply stunning, being at the same time lightfooted, gorgeously racy, mouthwatering, and packed with flavors. This gorgeous success now really only needs a little bit of patience for the touch of creamy sweetness to integrate. Drink 2030-2050.

From predominantly 80+-year-old vines cultivated in the lower and upper part of the slope and therefore partly (25%) harvested four weeks apart, the 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett offers the typically pure and mineral, salty and stony notes of the famous WSU that already comes as an uncompromisingly pure and flinty, citric-scented wine of remarkable complexity and tension on the nose. The palate starts fresh and piquant, very nervy and vital, with lots of salt and lingering mineral tension. In the end, there is nothing of the generous, luscious character of the WSU but all the purity, tension and salinity. This is a complex and exciting long-distance runner that will always fascinate but even more so in eight to 10 years. The 2020 was aged in casks and steel (50/50) and is a true classic that is far apart from most of the Kabinetts from this marvelous terroir. This is, again, a Must Buy of the vintage. The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett was made from fruit picked at 78° Oechsle on up to 100-year-old un-grafted vines and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (48 g/l). It offers a superb nose made of white flower, smoky elements, herbs, white flowers, and fine spices. The wine is subtly creamy yet so incredibly light-footed on the palate. Loads of minerals, floral flavors, and finely spicy elements add to the incredibly playful presence. The finish is airy, intense, and incredibly long. What a massive success! Drink 2030-2045.

Coming from 80- to 90-year-old vines, the 2020 Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese is based on the last grapes harvested by Team MFR, with still moderate must weight. Fermented 100% in casks, this wine shows a clear but still reductive nose with ripe, intense and elegant fruit aromas as well as flint notes. On the palate, this is still an extremely young, vital and tensioned Riesling with ripe and juicy fruit but still many restrictions and serious grip. Promising but far too young to be fairly rated, two-thirds of the 2020 was fermented in casks and one-third in steel. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from AP 1921 in November 2021. Harvested at about the same time as the Grosses Gewächs (GG) and thus about four weeks after the Kabinett Rieslings, the 2020 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese opens with a pure, fresh and remarkably delicate slate bouquet that is already singing. On the palate, the wine is lush yet filigreed and finessed and provided with delicate, lingering salinity and finely concentrated, perfectly ripe fruit. From vines about 100 years old from a parcel below the sundial, just down the Moselle, and aged in fuder, the 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is deep, intense and complex but also subtle on the refined and elegant, almost ethereal nose that intermingles perfectly ripe and healthy fruit aromas with notes of crushed stones. Lush and piquant on the palate with some fine tannins and very discreet new(er) oak notes, this is a vibrantly fresh and stimulatingly salty, well-structured WSU that is still far too young to show its true merits. Yet everything here—most of all its energy and incredible tension and salinity—indicates a great future. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from AP 1721 in November 2021. Drink 2030 - 2070.

The 2019 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is fascinatingly pure, bright, refined and flinty on the nose that reveals very fine Riesling, slate and iron aromas. Pure, fresh and filigreed on the palate, this is a crystalline, fresh and piquant, crisp and crystalline JSU Spätlese in the acidity-accentuated MFR style. The wine is compact and still on the sweet side on the palate, but already more than hints at huge depth and great juiciness wrapped into a magnificently ripe sense of acidity in the finish. The after-taste also shows some of the freshness and lightness to come. The only thing this superb sweet Riesling now needs is patience. What a stunner in the making! Drink 2029-2069.

As one of Germany's oldest wineries, the history of this iconic estate dates back to 966, when wines were mainly made for the nearby Monastery. Fast forward to today, fifth and sixth generation Carl von Schubert and his son Maximin are leading the estate carefully managing three of the most highly regarded Grand Cru vineyards in the region: Abtsberg, Bruderberg and Herrenberg.

Brilliant water like colour with a greenish tinge around the outskirts. Aromas of ripe limes, red apples and citrus are trailed by hints of honeysuckle, quince and light mineral. Fresh and pure, lime, red apple and subtle honeysuckle flavours fill the mouth over traces of quince finishing dry to off dry and minerally. Good length with a medium to long conclusion.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
