Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

The 2016 Rheingau Riesling Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg has a very clear, deep, pure and flinty bouquet of bright fruit and crushed stone aromas. This is absolutely fascinating in its purity, finesse and complex elegance. Round and terribly lush on the palate, with very fine tannins and ripe, crystalline acidity, this is a highly elegant, delicate and complex Riesling that is enormously filigreed yet tensioned and long. A goddess of the greatest finesse and elegance. The sweetness, body and minerality are in perfect balance.

Scents of white peach, lime and marjoram are accompanied by hints of ocean breeze and quarry dust. The silken palate brims with bright fruit accented by smoky, pungent green herbs and with a sense of crushed stone suffusion. The combination of palpable extract-richness with alcoholic levity (at 11.5%) is striking. The vibrant finish delivers a mouthwatering abundance of mineral salts and displays superb transparency to herbal, crystalline stony, slatey and smoky nuances.

From the Rheingau, the tiniest appellation in Germany.br> Honey toast, green apple, faint peach notes, bright perfume despite the fruitiness. Palate is juicy but cut well with brisk, glass shard edges, good length, vitality. Faint herb and fennel notes on green apple flavours, something talc-like, steely notes. Sheesh, this has a lot going on. Brilliant. Drink 2019-2035.

Use this crisp and elegant dry riesling as you would a Chablis, because that's the kind of dry balance and long, clean-mineral finish it has. With aeration, plenty of apples and pears fruit unfold. From organically grown grapes. Fair’n Green certification. Good aging potential. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Nick Glaetzer began his winemaking journey with his family in the Barossa Valley, following with vintages in the Languedoc, the Pfalz, Margaret River, the Riverland, Sunraysia, the Hunter Valley and Burgundy. In 2005 Nick landed in Tasmania, searching for cool-climate, super-premium vineyards; perfect for crafting Pinot Noir, Riesling and savoury Shiraz.
While working in the Pfalz wine region of Germany, Nick was converted to the local method of selecting the harvest date of riesling grapes based on their acid content and structure ‒ rather than the traditional Australian manner of harvesting on sugar concentration and grape flavour. These grapes then ferment into riesling wines with delicate citrus flavours and aromas, compared to the tropical spectrum of a riper harvest.
The mid-palate structure of GDF riesling is invigorated by sur lie ageing, which involves keeping the finished wine on ferment lees for 6-18 months.

Alea Riesling is crafted from Grosset's six-hectare estate-owned Certified Organic and Biodynamic Rockwood vineyard at Watervale in the Clare Valley. The isolated, high-altitude site, chosen and planted by Grosset between 2001 and 2018, consists of hard red rock and variable soils making it a much more challenging site than the Springvale vineyard close by. Grosset noticed the first harvests from this site were reminiscent of European Rieslings with a hint of residual sweetness. Inspired by this, he made the first 'Alea,' taking a more European approach to its production.

A dainty riesling, tiptoeing across a crunchy beam of Granny Smith apple, jasmine, Thai herb and lime splice. Peppery, sulfidic-minerally and balletic, but ultimately pretty easygoing in a dryish Kabinett sort of mold. This is mellifluous drinking as intended. Of prodigious versatility at the table. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2023 Alea Riesling leads with roasted pineapple, green apples, hints of lychee and juniper, lemon oil and coriander. The fruit is a little quieter this year, but it's no less "present." It is a beautiful wine, fleshy and soft, but it still remains tethered to the tracks of very fine, very firm acidity. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 - 2037.

I’m sure that Grosset’s Alea Riesling has always been a serious wine, but in the glass it’s more serious than ever, if that makes sense.
There’s excellent intensity here. There’s a slip of fruit sweetness but it’s gentle and slight, the clearer message one of crisp green apples, lime, minerals and tonic-like herbs. I get the feeling that Alea has changed tack slightly, become drier, more mineral, less grapey. I’m a fan. This is very good. Drink 2024 - 2032.

Polish Hill Riesling is crafted from Grosset's eight-hectare estate-owned Certified Organic and Biodynamic vineyard in the Clare Valley. The gently sloping site, chosen and planted by Grosset in 1996, consists of silt and shallow shales over a thin crust of clay and gravel, resting on a bed of ancient blue slate, approximately 500 million years old. The challenging rocky soil leads to nutrient scarcity for the vines, resulting in small bunches and berries that contribute to the heightened intensity of the fruit.

An outstanding release of this vaunted wine. It's intense, it's racy, it's complex and nuanced in its fruit, spice, mineral and subtle savoury elements, all of it woven into an extremely persistent and poised textural experience. There's stacks of flavour in all this, yet held within a tensile thrust of raciness and faint chalky pucker. And long, very long. One for the ages here. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Subdued aromas of talc, chalk, orchard fruits, tatami straw, finger lime and fresh lemonade. Dry and tightly furled to a point that verges on severity. There is bountiful extract that pummels the cheeks and stains the palate, suggestive of a bright future despite the unyielding youthfulness now. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Grosset’s Polish Hill is renowned for its reserve, particularly on release, but this rendition has both its quality and its fruit intensity sitting front and centre. This really does announce itself. Flavours of lemon, lime, grapefruit, chalk and citrus blossom explode onto the palate in the most commanding and authoritative of ways, and then extend (mighty) lengthily through the finish. It’s a lay down misére. It’s scented, intense and sustained. It’s a wine of great beauty. Drink 2023 - 2042,

Powerful lime, citrus and orange rind aromas drive the nose with notions of green apple, chalky talc, wet steel and some minerality also chiming in. More accessible than recent vintages of Polish Hill yet tightly coiled in comparison to the Springvale, the palate has an intense flavour profile of lime and citrus fruits which are complimented by some orange rind, crunchy green apple characters and talc. Certified organic and biodynamic. As always, an intense and concentrated expression of Clare Valley riesling. Powerful scents of mixed citrus peel, lime essence, lemongrass and ozone with faint, exotic spice and blackberry characters in the mix. The palate delivers juiciness, brightness of flavour and a little powdery grip to finish. A little more diffuse than legendary releases of this wine, the 2022 vintage feels a bit more accessible in youth. A couple of years' grace before drinking would yield additional enjoyment. The Polish Hill Riesling is muscular and defined in its structure and is routinely possessed of an authority and grace straight off the bat. This 2022 Polish Hill Riesling is mineral and fine, but phenolic and taut, too. The acidity creates tension and life in the mouth, and despite the wine being pristine, it is chalky and pithy, too. The Polish Hill Riesling has a decorated legacy and is prized for its longevity in the cellar. There have been mutterings of similarities between 2022 and the great and fabled 2002 vintage, boding very well indeed for the future of this wine. Riesling mainlines the dirt and takes us to place. This is why we gravitate toward great wine, to be taken to dirt, vineyard and region. Drink 2022 - 2042.

Certified organic and biodynamic. A high-tension, fragrant Springvale release. Bright, floral perfume of lime blossom, ozone, blackcurrant and green apple. Coiled. That's what this 2022 Springvale Riesling is. It's like a compressed spring, waiting for release. The fruit is from the Springvale vineyard and shows just how GOOD Australian Riesling is. This is textural and tight, with springboards of fruit blossom, chalk, pith and zest queued up. This is a wine that needs some time to emerge from itself, but it promises to be a superstar: Grosset has managed to wedge in some restraint and some austerity into the folds of the voluminous Clare fruit. Yikes. Awesome. Drink 2022 - 2042.

Curiously, in 2022, I feel the Springvale is less approachable in youth than the Polish Hill. Usually, of course, it’s the other way round.
Very intense and concentrated flavour. A bomb of lime and green apple, some floral/lily perfume, a fine white pepper dusty texture, very coiled up and firm, a whisper of aniseed, maybe, and a very long finish. The 2022 Alea Riesling is made from fruit grown at the Grosset Rockwood vineyard. This is the off-dry Riesling in the lineup, and I can tell you now, the sugar, the phenolics and the acidity are in a textural mesh of harmony in the mouth. There is a cross-hatch component to the mouthfeel, and it suspends the fruit over the tongue and out over the long finish. This is a really smart, composed, long (at this stage, quiet) and concentrated example of Clare Valley Riesling, proving Jeff Grosset is the master of the craft still. Yum. Drink 2022 - 2037.

Alea is the ‘off dry’ riesling from Grosset. This one feels dryer than any I have had before.
It’s a fleshy, fleshy feel though the core is pulverised rock and mineral water to counter balance. Pear, nectarine, some cucumber in tonic water to it too. Slurpy kind of feel with big appeal, good sense of freshness. It’s a little looser knit, broad in its roll around the palate, but has easy appeal.

The differences between Springvale and Polish Hill riesling have become less pronounced over the years. I would argue.
This leans on the talc and the chalk before it hits the pedals of citrus and apple. It boasts both delicacy and intensity though at this early stage it’s still working out the finish; it’s long without having write-home length. There’s almost a suggestion of grapefruit here or at least of citrus rind; in any case it’s tucked neatly into the overall flow. Drink 2020 - 2028+

Certified organic. Brilliant water like colour with a distinctive tinge of green around the outskirts. Piercing their way through the nostrils are intense lemon and lime aromatics followed by notions of green apple, subtle talc and steely mineral notes. Accessible, intensely flavoured and powerful yet still remarkably tightly coiled the palate features a core of pristine lemon and lime fruit that’s threaded by a tight line of acidity. Mouth watering crunchy green apple, orange rind, steely talc like characters and minerals chime in on the dry, austere finish. Magnificent drive on an exceptionally long aftertaste.

Hand crafted, organically grown, single site/estate riesling from Grosset. 10% price increase on last year. There’s no wage stagnation at the top of the Australian wine industry. Heavy riesling bottle.
Super dry. Super minerally. Excellent intensity. Purity, absolutely. Hay, wheat, lime, flowery apples and talc, and of course that quartz-like quality. It’s tight through the finish, to the point where it doesn’t quite feel as long as it should; it will relax in time, and all will be sorted. Drink 2021 - 2030+

More intense than many young Polish Hill Rieslings, this 2019 retains great poise and shape within its rich frame. Floral notes abound – violets and lavender, lemon and lime blossom – and such a heady perfume points towards a similarly rich palate. Intense juicy lime is carried on a tight acid spine that also bears mineral notes of shale and schist. Complex yet crisp and very persistent. Drink 2021 - 2050.

As one of Germany's oldest wineries, the history of this iconic estate dates back to 966, when wines were mainly made for the nearby Monastery. Fast forward to today, fifth and sixth generation Carl von Schubert and his son Maximin are leading the estate carefully managing three of the most highly regarded Grand Cru vineyards in the region: Abtsberg, Bruderberg and Herrenberg.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of red apples, pear, lime and hints of honeysuckle are followed by mandarin and spice. A radically cool and delicate riesling for Rheinhessen, where generosity is more or less the rule. Sleek and light-bodied, but with a wonderful racy energy and wet stone mineralty that together make this feel much drier than it really is. Long, extremely clean, lightly spritzy finish. The 2020 Rothenberg GG opens very clear, fresh and aromatic with elegant, ripe stone fruit aromas intertwined with a delicately smoky mineral spiciness. Round and beautifully juicy on the palate, this has very fine grip and a somewhat lactic creaminess that I found rather atypical for this Rothenberg that normally bursts with tension. I'm curious to follow the 2020 over the next couple of years, but at this early stage, it doesn't grab me like the 2019 did. Tasted in Wiesbaden at the end of August 2021. Drink 2027 - 2040.

From a cooler side valley of the cru, the 2019 Riesling trocken Pettenthal GG is pure and flinty on the nose as well as displaying coolish terroir aromas. Lean and rich at the same time, this is a coolish, pure and silky-textured, salty Riesling with enormous grip yet also tannins. The finish is slightly austere. This is still a baby, and I am curious where the wine is going to. Will it reman austere or gain some texture?

The aromas of dried chamomile, mint, oolong leaf tea and delicate yellow fruit give this GG a very special style. Not for those seeking power or weight, rather for fans of delicacy. In fact, it feels almost weightless at the long, dry finish.

Quite smoky and leesy still, this is an embryonic dry white with a featherweight body, but a lot of dried-herb, green-leaf tea, licorice and sea-salt character. With aeration, some peach emerges. Plenty of tannins here, although they don’t dominate, the mineral finish quite austere.

Fritz's Riesling grows in a very small and special part of Rheinhessen called the Roter Hang, a name meaning “red hill“ due to its red-slate soils. The combination of the red slate soil, its proximity to the Rhine river, exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards are perfect for producing wines with wonderful ripeness.
Brilliant water like core with a greenish tinged rim. Red apple and lime aromas mix with hints of honeysuckle, toast and spice. Brimming with delicious lime and red apple fruits, the palate shows terrific intensity. Traces of honeysuckle, mandarin and slatey mineral characters fill out the back half. Finishes dry with crunchy acidity and a delightfully long, mouth watering aftertaste.

The citrus coloured 2016 Pettenthal Riesling GG has a clear, fresh/coolish and spicy bouquet of ripe and concentrated Riesling berries, slate and very discreet toast aromas. Full-bodied, round and creamypiquant on the palate, with lush and intense fruit, grainy tannins and some prominent oak that still has to be integrated (Hoesch 1200-liter Stückfass) this is a complex and mouth-filling Pettenthal that needs some years to develop and gain finesse.

Can the 2015 Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling trocken GG top the excellent Nackenheim "1er Cru"? Wow, it can! This wine is very clear, precise and very deep on the stony and smoky—or rather flinty—nose. There are ripe stone fruit aromas that come along as more discreet and spicy, with crushed slate notes. On the palate, the minerals buffer the lively acidity and give an almost mealy, round and silky texture. This is a noble wine with a stimulatingly salty and vibrating finish. If you don't want to miss one of the greatest wines made from the red slope in 2015, then this is surely a wine to buy.

Flaxman’s Valley is a high altitude sub-region of the Eden Valley and one of our most highly regarded districts for growing great Riesling. Combine that with the stellar 2023 vintage and we are in for something special. Cold fermentation took place in refrigerated stainless steel tanks. A shining pale yellow colour. This is beautifully perfumed with talc, bath salts, lavender, florals and citrus, notably intense limes with fine balance and a lingering finish. There is a fine line of crisp acidity with good intensity. Love this and best at ten to twelve years, with potentially a lot more, ahead of it. Drink 2023-2035.

Bright straw colour with golden tinged edges. Intense honeyed pear and baked apple scents rise out of the glass followed by some marmalade and lemon butter notes. Rich, luscious honeyed apricot, apple and lime flavours are underscored by bracing fresh acidity. Notions of marmalade and lemon butter linger on the back half. Good viscosity concluding with some dried pineapple characters on the lengthy aftertaste.

The tightrope walk and tension between fruit sweetness and acidity is delicious and fascinating in equal measure here, with characters of lime-edged apricot drops, lemon barley, dried honey, gingerbread and a dusting of soft spice and jasmine. Floral and head-spinningly pure on the palate, with nary a hint of cloying. A clean, precise bolt of pure botrytis fruit and spice on the finish lingers beautifully. Drink by 2028.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a light tinge of green to the edges and a watery hue. Lime and lemon aromas jump out of the glass followed by orange rind, talc and mineral notes. Mouth watering acidity underpins the lime, citrus and orange rind fruits. Talc and flinty mineral characters ensue. Dry crunchy finish with a long zippy flint infused aftertaste.

Liz Heidenreich is a significant figure in Australian winemaking, but perhaps more so for her work with riesling. This holds 2gL residual sugar – no sweet whatsoever, but there’s a little extra pliancy and bounce. Scents of red apple, blackcurrant, pink grapefruit and flint. Flavours are also red apple oriented, doused in lime juice, flecked with ginger and finishing steely and flinty. Drinkability is high here. Refreshment factor, too. And that sense of detail ... it’s great stuff. Drink 2022 - 2035.

Brilliant water like colour with a distinct tinge of green to the edges. Zesty lemon and lime scents mix with orange rind, wet steel and chalky mineral notes. Snappy lemon and lime fruits are underpinned by crunchy acidity with elements of wet steel and flinty mineral characters lying in the background. Dry, slightly austere finish with a racy mineral infused lemon and lime aftertaste.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Pronounced lemon and lime scents are followed by hints of granny smith apple, orange rind and talc. Lemon and lime juice flavours have a lean racy feel with green apple, wet steel and mineral characters in the background. Finishes very dry and taut with crunchy acidity and an austere aftertaste.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
