Riesling

1,692 products

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

Juicy and fresh nice shape across the finish.

Matured for 18 months in old French oak barrels to build texture and weight. Brilliant very pale straw colour with green highlighted edges and a watery hue. Aromas of lime and green to red apple mix with faint whiffs of orange blossom, citrus and spice. Juicy and fresh, lining the palate are pear, lime and red apple fruits with subtle infusions of orange blossom and wet slate characters forming the under carriage. Brisk acidity with nice shape across the finish that shows traces of ginger spice.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Things are done in wood here, there’s no fear of textures coming with micro-oxygenation in the process.
Very expressive citrus family notes on the nose, lemon blossom and lime skin, along with citrus-led herbs like lemongrass and lemon balm. On the edges, the aromas are waxy and a little nutty. The top note is a ‘mineral’ vibration, coming as a scent of salty water on hot rocks. The wine has purity in the fruit department; it’s expressive and juicy, flavour runs deep; the flow is gently textural in this edition, with dusty chalk traction and a spicy ginger finish. Super delicious as it comes. Drink 2026-2035.

Zippy and taut with a long driving finish.

Brilliant water like colour with green tinted edges. Pronounced lemon and lime aromas are trailed by wet steel and chalky mineral like notes. Zippy lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple fruits cast a racy feel across the palate. Crisp laser like acidity with wet steel and chalky mineral elements lingering through the long, driving yet taut finish.

As I shoved my generously framed nose into this glass of 3 Drops Riesling, a smile arose from deep inside. It. Smells. Delicious. Lemon sorbet, grapefruit juice and musk sticks. The concentration of fruit and perfumed florals scream plump cheeks, cheekiness and reckless confidence. In the mouth, there’s a great line of acid and vibrancy, cocooned in a pithy texture. The flavour is packed in: lime sherbet, pomelo and all the pith. There’s even a surprising pickled radish note to the finish. Germany comes to mind. It will put a spring in your step. Drink with a hot-girl dinner of carbs and laughs. Drink 2026-2034.

The spicy lemon rind aromatics are immediately striking in this positively exquisite riesling from the Great Southern. Three Drops has emerged as one of the best producers of this variety, and in a good season like this, it has really excelled. It’s fine and crisp, with a typically linear line carrying through to a very long finish. Crunchy, spicy minerality on the palate with a nice lick of acid to close. Super wine.

A dry, racy, animatedly fruity Riesling.

From the Schloss Johannisberg team in the Rheingau, this dry Riesling is sourced from select plots near the 50th parallel.

The 2023 Idig Königsbach Riesling VDP.Grosse Lage is deep, ripe, pure and intense on the nose that reveals concentrated fruit intermingled with saline notes. Full-bodied, intense and dense in its texture, this is a compact, saline and very mineral, still tight and crunchy yet stimulating Idig with fine tannins and a long, intense and sustainable finish. 12% stated alcohol. For now, the 2023 Riesling Königsbach Idig Grosses Gewächs is faintly citric on the nose. However, the palate sprays with lemon and fizzes with brightness and vivid juiciness, evoking a rushing brook, running over mossy stones, cooling, pure and rapid. Everything here is alive with citric verve, leaving such a gorgeous, long citrus savor. The 2023 is wonderful and so pure. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

Intensely flinty and expressive on the nose like a young Chablis Grand Cru, this great Pfalz dry riesling very slowly unwinds on the palate. Gigantic power and energy are pressed into a sleek silhouette, with an Amalfi lemon freshness that’s off the scale. How can you not be moved by the almost endless finish of this great masterpiece of minerality? From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

From 34-year-old vines on tertiary limestone soils. the 2023 Ölberg-Hart Königsbach Riesling VDP.Grosse Lage is deep, pure, flinty and particularly smoky on the intense and complex, distinctively mineral nose. The wine is pure, saline and tensioned on the palate yet also reveals ripe and dense as well as juicy fruit with a fine and persistent mineral structure and lingering salinity. The 2023 Riesling Königsbach Ölberg-Hart Grosses Gewächs comes from the core parcel of the Ölberg on calcareous marl. Yeasty funk on the nose, for now, obscures the fruit. However, the palate is bright, lithe, vivid and citric, with a beautiful concentration and supple, smooth, cooling depth. There is an excellent combination of profound freshness and supple, slender mouthfeel. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2050.

Complex herbal aromas are interwoven with intense Amalfi lemon fruit and a very subtle flinty character that gives this stunning Pfalz riesling GG an electric vitality. The 2023 Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling VDP.Grosse Lage is from pure Muschelkalk soils and opens with a pure yet intense and mineral as well as sur lie-scented nose of very fine Riesling berries. Round and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, pure, saline and crunchy Riesling whose style is clearly aligned with the Pinot Noir. This is based on vines planted in the early 1980s and a very small part of very young vines from 2019. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 30 cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2024. Drink 2028-2060.

The 2023 Riesling Neustadter Vogelsang Grosses Gewächs is grown on Triassic limestone, rising up to 320 meters and benefiting from cooler winds at night but facing due south. Just a touch of spice, reminiscent of cumin seed, appears on the shy nose. The palate is slender and traces a central spine of citric brightness that is luminous and seems to sink deep into the soil. It is strait-laced, lemony, taut, bright, vivacious, pristine and pure. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2050.

Christmann's 2020 Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling Grosse Lage is the first release of this steep cru that the family bought three years before. The wine opens with a coolish and lime-fresh bouquet of crushed stones and lemons. It is remarkably cool and fresh for the vintage, which comes through on the palate. Here, the wine shows super-ripe and intense fruit, whereas the coolish and saline limestone terroir comes out only on the finish with fresh and lemon-scented acidity and long, mouthwatering salinity. There are fine tannins and bitters on the aftertaste. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2027 - 2047.

The 2020er Idig GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, presents a beautifully smoky and floral nose of anise, cassis, jasmine, licorice, and herbs, as well as a hint of camphor. The wine proves superbly zesty and elegant on the comparatively light-weighted yet complex palate. The finish is super long and focused, despite more weight and presence coming through, especially with airing. The overall balance remains on the fresh and lively side, and we would opt to enjoy this beauty rather in its primary phase of development. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2020er Ölberg-Hart GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, captures one’s attention with some beautifully refined and aromatic notes of almond cream, herbs, spices, candied grapefruit, anise, and Conference pear. The wine develops great juicy presence which gives it depth and complexity, while the finish is more restrained but also zesty and spicy. Riesling vines were first planted as part of Henry Best’s ‘Nursery Block’ vineyard in the 1860s. Subsequent plantings followed in 1944 (since removed), 1978 and 1998. Grampians riesling at its very best. It defines varietal intensity but so too a fine and utterly delicious delicacy of touch. Aromatic, spicy, apple and lime scented with a lemon-lime essence quality, almost crystalline, that impresses and resonates deep. The 2025 Riesling comes from cuttings from the mother vines planted on the property (still producing, mind you) planted in 1866. It's an incredibly special site in Victoria, and they are—as an unnecessary aside—responsible for my absolute favorite Pinot Meunier, anywhere: the Old Vine Pinot Meunier. So here, the 2025 Riesling leads with lime and lilac, green apple, nashi pear and saline acidity. This is gorgeous. I love it. The acidity will preserve it for a long time to come. It drinks nicely now too, however. 11.5 % alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.

A bit of lees, a bit of barrel time, a lot of consideration. From the Glenhope Vineyard on granite soils at 430 metres above sea level. What can’t Michael Dhillon do? This wine puts me in mind of riesling I like drinking, a far cry away from classic dry white riesling 101 made in inert, clinical styles.

The fruit for this wine was sourced from two standout vineyards within the higher altitude and cooler sections of Eden Valley, the Cranes Range vineyard and Boehm Springs Road vineyard. This is a stunning Riesling and amazing value. It might sound like the proverbial broken record but anyone claiming to like Riesling who is not buying, drinking and cellaring these is not serious. Rob Diletti sees this as his flagship. The fruit is all from the estate, from six different blocks, aged between two and four decades. Only the first press of 450 litres/tonne is used here. A bright lemon hue, it is leaner and more elegant than the Skywalk, as expected, with notes of florals, oystershells, citrus including fresh lime and grapefruit pith, and a line of saline acidity. Focus and length are present. This is easily a ten to twenty year proposition. A wonderful Riesling and one which is must-have value. Drink 2024-2044.

The 2023 Skywalk Riesling leads with a distinctly talc-y, mineral nose. It has all the delicacy and ephemeral nuance in the mouth as well. Despite its levity, it is long and persistent through the finish, spooling off into the distance, with white tea, jasmine, green apple skins, scratched lime zest and what feels like a million other tiny characters ... like pulverized confetti. It's such a pleasure to drink this. It's pure and crystalline. Drink 2023-2033.

Matured on lees for six months, 50% in old, aged barrels. Showcases the outstanding complexity that can be achieved with Grampians riesling. Sweet herbal notes rise from the glass with lime, sunny citrus, lemongrass and ginger spice. They gather, layer upon layer, on the palate, producing a spice-fuelled, citrus tangy taste sensation, smooth and supple in texture and long on the finish. Brings a touch of the exotic with herbal-edged makrut lime and lemongrass to close. Effortless beauty. Drink by 2034.

Clemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.

Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

Here's the opportunity to get a GG-type dry riesling for a friendly price. Excellent ripeness and finesse, the stone-fruit and grapefruit character beautifully intertwined with the minerally acidity. Long, herbal and wet-stone finish that tells the full Mosel riesling story. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Riesling vom blauen Schiefer, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, comes from early pickings in the blue-slate sector (Fahrlay) of the Pündericher Marienburg. It offers a beautiful nose made of white peach, pear, a hint of earthy spices, wet stone, floral elements, and smoke. The wine proves juicy rather than bone-dry on the palate, where riper flavors play with one’s senses. The finish is still slightly rough and backward. This wine now only needs a few years of patience to fully shine. It could then easily exceed our early high expectations especially as it reveals its superbly floral and fresh array of flavors. Drink 2024-2032.

Round, refined and elegant on the palate, this is a refined and saline, very delicate and stimulating Spätlese with a pure and salivating finish. Concentrated and texturally voluminous yet zippy, this is a superb Riesling.

Whilst best known for their Shiraz Viognier, Clonakilla also produce world class Riesling. Murrumbateman's cool climate and decomposed granite soils are ideal for it’s production.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Intense lime, citrus and orange rind scents engulf the nostrils trailed by some chalky talc and mineral notes. Zesty lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple fruits are both concentrated and texturally voluminous. Lining the back half are notions of orange rind, talc and chalky mineral elements. Possessing zippy acidity and outstanding drive, it finishes long and scrumptious.

Riesling was the first white variety planted at Clonakilla, back in 1971 by John Kirk, the father of Tim Kirk, the current winemaker. It is still going strong. The grapes are handpicked and whole bunch pressed, before racking for fermentation. Tim has indicated that the fruit came in, in near perfect condition, despite it being a rather challenging year. Whilst some winemakers are a little like politicians, Tim is definitely one you can believe, even if he is based in Canberra. If he claims it was perfect, then perfect it was. This is a magic Riesling, surely one of his best. I have long been a big fan of the Clonakilla Rieslings, but this one surely exceeds all expectations. A wine of the palest lemon/lime hue, the nose is delightfully full of citrus and spices, especially an appealing lime sherbet note. This is supported by hints of river pebbles, honeysuckle, wet slate and ginger. The wine is clean, inevitably youthful, delightfully fresh with bright acidity and great length. Strike that and make it incredible length. This Riesling can sit with the best made anywhere in Australia. A twenty-year proposition. Drink 2026-2046.

A blend of fruit from McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills, not the most common pairing but one that works here. Basket pressing of small batches, before a long and cool fermentation, is brought to a halt before the wine reaches full dryness, providing balance. Pale lemon, we have notes of citrus, florals, cold tea and a hint of peaches. A mineral support lies in the background with a line of fresh acidity. There is some fruit sweetness evident towards the finish – at least, it appears as such but is no doubt that remaining residual sweetness. The wine fills out on the palate, with a touch of orange rind on the finish and good length. Drink 2024-2028.

Picked very late in the middle of September, the 2022 Clos Windsbuhl Hunawihr Riesling offers a very deep, rich and intense, lime and limestone-driven bouquet that is very distinctive, rich, coolish, fresh and citric. Round and generous on the palate, this is a powerful, complex, very salivating Windsbuhl Riesling with the generosity and finesse (also in terms of acidity) of a grand cru and a lemon-fresh (and bitter) finish The wine is wide and juicy but also refined and fresh in all its minerality. It is also really rich and potent yet not at all driven by alcohol. The salinity is great here and intertwined with tannins and noble bitters. 4,400 bottles 12.46% stated alcohol. Natural cork. The 2022 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl is a "bucolic" site, Humbrecht says, surrounded by forest and fields at altitude. It is on rocky Triassic limestone. The wine is slightly flinty and nutty on the nose. The palate is stony, too, taut and bright but flowing like clear spring water, cooling, with ever more citrus coming to the fore. Lemon zestiness and lovely brightness make this mouth-puckeringly tangy and deliciously thrilling. (Bone-Dry). Drink 2026-2060.

At once powerful and crystalline, this densely structured dry riesling is made for the long term. Extremely lemony and salty on the medium- to full-bodied palate, then so compact at the very long, driving finish, which is as pointed as a rapier. The last riesling harvested in this vintage, but with the lowest alcohol and the highest acidity. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

From a cooler, higher part of the grand cru that is facing east-southeast on rocky, reddish soils, the 2022 Hengst Wintzenheim Riesling opens with a very deep and coolish, intense and complex yet refined and elegant, terroir-driven bouquet with fresh apple puree and spicy and saline terroir notes. Full-bodied, very elegant and not all too rich, this is a dense and well balanced, less racy Riesling than the Clos Häuserer but with a long, intense and finely tannic finish. After 500 liters in the inaugural 2021 vintage, 3,200 bottles plus 170 magnums of the 2022 vintage were filled in January 2024. The vineyard was planted in 2016 with the winery's own selections at a density of 9,000 vines per hectare, which yielded 28 hectoliters per hectare in 2022. 12.83% stated alcohol. Natural cork. The 2022 Riesling Grand Cru Hengst is picked on the eastern side of the Hengst. The parcel was planted in 2016 with high density, and the first vintage of the wine was the 2021. Gorgeously smoky flint precedes subtle floral and tangerine peel notes. The juiciness on the palate is all-encompassing, spreading wonderfully ripe, fresh Mirabelle fruit pervaded by fine, tangerine-like ripe citrus. The Dellchen vineyard was also not spared by the frost in April 2024. Dönnhoff lost 70% of its grapes. However, those that survived have produced a very fine Riesling: very compact, not yet fully accessible, but the candied lemon and slightly exotic fruit promise much for the future. Auslese might sound cuddly to some, but this is a very radical wine with gigantic concentration of cool tropical fruit and mineral acidity. Electric glide on the medium- to full-bodied palate. The 2023 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Auslese is made from mostly highly ripe grapes with around 10-15% of botrytized fruit, all pressed in a basket press, slowly, over hours, drip by drip is extracted, without rupturing the grape skins. The tender nose is not obvious; it shows distant notions of iced Reine Claude compote with an overtone of passion fruit foliage; all is lemony and tender. The palate is sweet, bright and concentrated, but it has a slender, taut footprint. Extreme elegance is the name of the game, and the tenor is still of fresh lemon juice and zest. Restraint and elegance are exemplified here. Drink 2034-2070.

Its Spatlese and Auslese balance electrifying mineral acidity with lush fruit sweetness, delivering an effortless harmony of weightless power, purity, and decades-long cellaring potential.

When worlds colide. The tension between the cool, dark side (think Darth Vader) and the enormous brightness of the stone fruit (think Luke Skywalker) makes this astonishing riesling Spatlese extremely compelling. The most beautiful pineapple and grapefruit aromas. Fabulous freshness at the stunningly straight and pure finish. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese is from a geologically complex site that has loess, loam, shale, weathered sandstone and volcanic formations, the moderating influence of the river also means that botrytis is possible. Spätlese and Auslese are harvested together but selected in the vineyard. Golden and gently botrytised fruit goes into Spätlese. This charms with a touch of crushed blackcurrant foliage and ripest, juiciest Reine Claude plum, all edged with citrus. Beautifully taut, vividly concentrated, yet no heaviness, just light-footed, dancing, playful and oh so balanced. Drink 2034-2070.

At least since the magical 2020 vintage, this grand cru is becoming another Dönnhoff (and Nahe) icon wine next to the estate's Hermannshöhle GG. The 2023 Norheimer Dellchen Riesling trocken GG is bright and clear on the elegant and finely juicy as well as spontaneously inviting nose that indicates perfectly ripe and healthy Riesling fruit that is fully intermingled with the terroir-driven flinty notes. Perfectly round and finessed on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and finely juicy, then utterly saline and savory as well as buoyant Dellchen that pairs purity with intensity and a long, complex and promising finish. This is superbly balanced and full of joy. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in August and October 2024. Drink 2028-2055.

The 2023 Riesling Norheimer Dellchen Grosses Gewächs is grown on porphyry with a shale cover. The vines are sheltered and have underground aquifers. A tender lemon zest note holds traces of white summer blossom, wet stone and a touch of chervil—beautifully tender. The slender palate, likewise, is lemon-dominated, bright, sunny and friendly in its citric smile. The 2023 is agile, tingling and slender with a subtle stoniness. This is as wonderfully pervasive, tart and palate-cleansing as lemon sorbet. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

This dry riesling has a hypnotic beauty that leaves no doubt how this wine redefines what peachy means in the context of this grape variety. As it aerates, a wealth of wild berry and flower nuances develop and expand. Given the mind-bending concentration of this wine, it is staggeringly fresh and absolutely precise. Then comes the finish, which is like a prima ballerina dancing on pointe off into the distance. Drink from release.

The 2022 Riesling Norheimer Dellchen Grosses Gewächs unites volcanic and shale soils. The site benefits from underground aquifers. The nose opens with a smoky slate note leading to the lemon- and lime-edged ripe stone fruit. The entire impression is one of yellow-fruited, ripe juiciness. This verges more and more into a yellow spectrum of citrus, perfumed and almost tender. The palate keeps this juicy fruit and dips it into tingling saltiness. Generosity, ripeness, saltiness and textural elements of pear peel and citrus zest unite into a very energetic, driven, almost urgent wine. The finish on the tongue is linear, but the aromas expand and take flight. (Bone-dry) Drink 2027-2050.

What an exquisite stone fruit nose this super-fine and filigree dry riesling has! Yes, it is also very concentrated, but this and the power are completely underplayed. The result is an almost weightless palate that hangs like a white cloud in the still air. Extraordinary purity and precision at the almost endless finish. The 2022 Riesling Roxheimer Höllenpfad im Mühlberg Grosses Gewächs is from a special, old parcel of 40-year-old Riesling within the stoniest, rockiest parts of the Permian sandstone of the Höllenpfad. A touch of yeast still plays with the ripe apricot fruit that shimmers shyly on the nose. A touch of white pepper later appears. The palate is stony yet rounded, structured by rockiness, with vivid glimmers of lemon oil, concentrated and increasingly zesty. It's pure yet has an increasingly insistent intensity, spraying with ripe lemon zestiness, white pepper and iron oxide. In the end, buffered lemon zest fills the mouth and mind. The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Grosses Gewächs is from shale soils. The nose immediately expresses water on hot stone: warm and redolent of things that are not vegetal but mineral. The palate, however, holds Riesling's alluring citrus and stone fruit. The stony depth and dimension are undeniable, waiting patiently in the background to come to the fore. For now, citrus provides the top notes, but the heart and base note is of absolute stone: wet stone, shale that holds water, salt and centuries in its depth. The buffered citrus serenity is captivating. The finish is pure lemon linearity. (Bone-dry) Drink 2027-2050.

On the compact palate this has staggering concentration yet still manages to be very light on its feet. The finish is blade-runner sharp, but the blade also flashes in the sun. The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Auslese takes a while to open up. Finally, it does with a serene sense of ripe apricot, followed by a lovely citrus spectrum, ranging from lime and lemon, the merest overtone of candied lemon to tangerine with some crushed chamomile thrown in. Again, the palate is defined by Riesling rather than botrytis, bringing a rich but toned sweetness, intense, stealing your heart with its stealthy charm. The 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese is from a site that combines weathered shale, weathered sandstone and volcanic formations, "but essentially the vines root in Tonschiefer or shale," Helmut says. It is not a steep site; in the valley, cold air flows at night, and the days are hot. This has the biggest day-night amplitude and is close to the river. The nose is of confounding aromatic complexity: green elements of citrus, think lime jelly, citrus leaf. The palate has a tropical intensity that brings passion fruit, lime, mango and much more intense sweetness that is always cut with vivid acidity. The 2022 is wonderfully exciting, hair-raising, almost joyful, or, as Helmut calls it, "crazy." Simply wonderful. Drink 2028-2050.

From shale, the 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese is subtle on the nose. The merest flicker of reduction precedes distant perfumes of ripe pear, stone fruit and lifted, serene citrus peel in the green-to-yellow spectrum. The palate holds rounded sweetness, seemingly edged by tealeaf, stoniness and lime peel. The citrus takes over, providing serene and profound aromatics, lasting, elegant and pure. Despite the sugar, sweetness almost stops registering in these alluring flavors that push freshness much more than sweetness. The 2022 is a sleeper, slow and profound, but with proper mileage. Dr Loosen is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, and has been in the same family for over 200 years. Current custodian Ernst Loosen works with some of the finest vineyards in the area, and since 2011 he has pushed the boundaries further in an attempt to better express three unique terroirs. Working with Wehlener Sonnenuhr (blue slate), Urziger Würzgarten (red volcanic soil), and Erdener Pralat (red slate), the Grosses Gewachs Reserve wines hail from the finest parcels of ungrafted vines in each vineyard. Fermentation occurs naturally as with the regular GG wines, however the wines are held on full lees for 24 months, before an additional 24 months in bottle. This additional maturation approach lends greater balance and a deeper degree of vineyard expression to these wines.

Erdener Prälat is perhaps the greatest vineyard in the Mosel region. It benefits from its 45° slope with perfect southern exposure, red slate soil and proximity to the river. All these factors, combined with its position below huge, heat-retaining cliffs, explain why Dr. Loosen never harvests anything less than Auslese ripeness from this site.

The 2020er Erdener Treppchen Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Onnerts and Herzlay sectors (situated just above and next to the Prälat), and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This cask sample ready for bottling proves quite non-saying and smoky at first before fine scents of anise, minty herbs, grapefruit, floral elements, and licorice emerge from the glass. The wine is superbly playful and spicy on the very long and smoky finish. The after-taste is very pure and long. Drink 2025-2035.

An extremely impressive wine with remarkable power and density for this cool, quite moist and rather underrated vintage. Ripe exotic fruit aromas mingle with notes of Thai basil and galgant. Breathtaking herbal freshness and wet stone minerality at the very crisp, long finish that’s deep and delicate. Drink or hold.

The 2016er Erdener Prälat Réserve Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented in oak with ambient yeasts and aged on its gross lees for 24 months before being bottled. This hayyellow- colored wine offers a still somewhat backward but already quite impressive nose made of a touch of underripe pineapple, elderflower, grapefruit, and smoky elements. While the nose is already hugely engaging, the wine is still slightly smooth at this stage on the palate but the complexity of the finish more than hints at the greatness packed in here at maturity. The aftertaste is simply splendid as it combines the subtly fieriness so typical of the Prälat with the typical delineated juiciness of grand dry Mosel wines. This is a classic in the making! Drink 2026-2041.

Due the rich, red volcanic soils, Urziger Wurzgarten produces wines unlike any other in the region. As the name would suggest, expect an exotic and spice laden Riesling that leans more towards tropical fruit flavours than the neighbouring vineyards.

Brimming with red gooseberry and white peach plus notes of fennel, wild thyme and rosemary this is clearly identifiable as a representative of its vintage, but has some notes that are far from typical for 2016. Really concentrated yet sleek and focused with a wild berry intensity that makes the bold finish very exciting. Great aging potential. Drink or hold.

The 2016er Ürziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichter Reserve Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), is made from parcels of very old un-grafted vines in the prime Pichter sector and was fermented in oak with ambient yeasts and aged on its gross lees for 24 months before being bottled. This yellow-white colored wine offers a subtly complex nose made of pear, fine spices, some citrusy elements, a hint of petrol, and subtle scents of herbs. At this stage, the smoothness of the wine is coming through on the palate yet the finish is superbly airy, multi-layered, and complex. The aftertaste is all about smoke, spices, and herbs. This wine is clearly still going through its closed phase and is best left alone for another five years or so. But then, it will prove a superbly complex expression of dry Riesling. Drink 2026-2041.

This dry Mosel masterpiece is a sleeping giant, just beginning to awaken, but has decades of life ahead of it. Extremely deep and concentrated, but no less finely delineated, this is so complex you could spend hours studying all the spicy details. However, the ripe-mango note that dominates the foreground is also ravishing. The best wine of this category (long matured GGs) made so far in Germany! Drink or hold.

In reviewing the “regular” vintage 2015 Erdener Prälat Reserve, I looked forward comparing the eventual Reserve bottling, and expressed “my hunch ... that the latter will prove not just more expressive in its early years but also longer-lived.” Well, that time is here, and at least in terms of expressiveness, this tasting unfortunately failed to confirm my hunch. This Reserve appears less successful than the “regular” Grosses Gewächs in reflecting Loosen and Schug’s determination (beginning with 2004) to capture an animation and dynamic exchange of flavors in all of their Prälat bottlings that were missing when the site was getting picked later and based more on achieving high must weight. The nose here shows an oxidative tendency that I haven’t noted in other Loosen Reserve bottlings, though in itself, I don’t consider that a problem. Prickly notes of lemon and kumquat zests, along with an incisive note of white pepper, are very much in keeping with how the “regular” Grosses Gewächs performed in its youth. But smoky black tea and Latakia tobacco, along with suggesions of wet stone, moss and lichen, take the nose here to a new level of complexity. So far, so good – very good, in fact. Furthermore, the midpalate comes off as slightly slimmer as well as more texturally refined than that of the regular bottling, which might in part be a function of alcohol having been blown off by an additional year in cask, but also and in large part of lees buffering. It’s the finish of this Reserve – though impressive in its sheer persistence – that I find a letdown. A slightly dank alkaline and mossy impression seems to be all that remains of those elements that the nose led one to anticipate, and there is a sense of opacity, with only modest primary juiciness. “This is just Prälat being Prälat,” insisted Loosen, “and it needs time to come back.” As for longevity, that must obviously also remain an open question. Drink 2022 - 2026.

It offers a captivatingly aromatic and smoky nose of lime, pineapple, prune, spices, herbs, a hint of camphor, licorice, and tar. The wine is very compact and has great dry extract, but also a smoother and softer side on the palate as ripe and even exotic fruits join the party. The finish is superbly long and structured, with a touch of power in the background. This is already very impressive but has clearly upside potential as it will gain finesse over the years. This offers a gorgeous nose of almond, pear, candied orange zest, a hint of pineapple, coconut minty herbs and spices. The wine develops a smooth and creamy feel on the palate and leaves a delicately powerful feel of herbs and spices in the long and superbly intense finish. Whether it’s a function of the site or of the level of botrytis, this leaves behind the primary juiciness that characterized the “regular” Loosen Auslesen of the vintage. But it’s lovely nonetheless. Orange and muskmelon are mingled with decadent lily, headily sweet gardenia and musky peony both on the nose and on an expansive, glycerol-rich palate loaded with inner-mouth perfume. That perfume, like the wine’s ripe fruit flavors, lingers impressively, if without much animation. (This was bottled shortly after my late July 2017 visit.)

All 18.5ha of vineyards are planted to Riesling, the excellent micro-climate and deep slate soils of the Brauneberger Juffer slope forming the basis for some of the most intensely flavoured and elegantly-structured Rieslings in Mosel. This wine comes from the blue slate soils of the steep slope sites of the villages of Brauneberg and Mulheim.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with gleaming green tinged edges and a watery hue. Jumping from the glass are aromas of lime zest, lemon and mandarin followed by whiffs of orange blossom, wet steel and flinty mineral notes. Crunchy lime, lemon and mandarin fruits are underpinned by laser etched acidity. Traces of honeysuckle are also apparent. Very flinty and minerally, it has a long zingy finish.

Georg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.

The vineyard site Pfaffenwies was initially mentioned as ‘pafenwies’ in documents from 1211, and later as ‘pfaffenwissen’ (1235). It was named after Pastor Dydo, also known as ‘Pfaffe’. This steep site has a gradient of up to 45% and is situated between 90 to 160m above sea level. The soil is a combination of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite, with loess in the lower parts. Riesling from this area is characterised by great elegance as well as pronounced acidity and minerality.

Form Lorch, the 2022 Pfaffenwies offers a clear, refined and intense bouquet with clear, bright fruit aromas intertwined with delicate flinty notes of weathered slate. Full-bodied and mouthfilling on the palate, this is a pure, elegant, well-balanced but also tensioned and savory-finishing Riesling from the Pfaffenwies. 11.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2023. Drink 2024-2047.

The 2022 Riesling Lorcher Pfaffenwies was harvested across six different parcels within this southwest-facing site, dating to the mid-1960s, ranging from slate closer to the river and more quartzite toward the forest. Theresa calls it a “complete picture of the vineyard.” It's fermented in Stück and Halbstück. The nose opens with a juicy yellow plum, a frisson of crushed yarrow and rock dust. The palate is concentrated and has something salty, insistent, mouth-watering and savory. Lemony brightness comes with a slight sense of lemon pith and crushed yarrow spice. It's very clear-cut, subtly nutty on the finish with much brightness and understated substance. (Bone-dry)

This sleek and tightly wound beauty has the Amalfi-lemon, lime-zest and wild-herb aromas we associate with the top vineyard sites at the northern extremity of the Rheingau. Only medium-bodied, but intensely mineral, this is bristling with racy energy and wet-stone minerality through the long, very focused finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

Tense and taut with crisp, racy acidity finishing very dry and steely.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Leaping from the glass are zesty lime, lemon and orange rind scents which are followed by some mandarin and steely mineral notes. Tense and tautly structured, crisp, racy acidity provides laser like focus to the lemon, lime zest and Granny Smith apple fruit. Chalky talc, wet steel and flinty mineral elements ensue. Finishes very dry and steely.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
