Of the 15 South African wines I have picked out, Radford Dale is the only estate that's run organically. In contrast, all the Loire wines are either from organic or biodynamic domaines, or in conversion to organic status. Renaissance is sourced from vines planted on granite, aged between six and 37 years old. The grapes were picked by hand. The 2017 has an opulent nose and is richly textured, with a good concentration of ripe fruit along with vibrant acidity on the long finish. A lovely wine with good potential to age.

2016 Domaine Remi Jobard Bourgogne BlancBurgundy, FRANCE$46. 99Bottle$563.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkRemi Jobard is widely considered one of the rising stars of Burgundy, and the Domaine can count amongst their impressive land holdings some prime plots in Meursault 1er Cru vineyards Genevrieres, Poruzots and Charmes. Certified organic since 2011, the family own and run eight hectares of vines spread throughout Monthelie and Meursault. The wines can be considered modern by Burgundy standards, being clean and pure with fantastic richness and complexity.

A vaguely tropical nose reflects notes of melon and citrus peel. The round, fruity and delicious flavors are nicely vibrant if a bit one-dimensional on the otherwise attractively clean and dry finish.

Pale yellow. High-pitched scents of lemon and crushed stone. Intense and highly perfumed, showing excellent precision to its flavors of citrus peel, spices and minerals. Some unabsorbed CO2 adds to the wine's juicy character. Not a thick wine but sharply chiseled, aromatic and long on the aftertaste; this really piques the salivary glands.

Seamless and expansive in the mouth, displaying impressive focus to its lively citrus and orchard fruit flavors. Josh Raynolds - VinousA wine you don’t see often enough, the 2018 Condrieu La Bonnette is terrific, with a medium-bodied, seamless texture as well as textbook Condrieu notes of tangerine, citrus zest, brioche, and white flowers. It has plenty of freshness, yet shows the soft, plush style of the vintage. Drink it over the coming 2-3 years.

2019 Ridge Vineyards Estate ChardonnayCalifornia, UNITED STATES$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2019 Chardonnay Estate is super-elegant and precise. Scents of tangerine oil, mint, apricot and chamomile all grace this lithe, wonderfully expressive Chardonnay. Bright acids and a very slight touch of reduction frame the close. The Estate is made for near and medium-term drinking. I would prefer to open it well in advance though. Drink 2022-2029.

Antonio Galloni - VinousComing from the Santa Cruz Mountains, the 2019 Chardonnay Estate offers a beautiful sense of reduction and minerality in its stone fruits, toasted brioche, and crushed stone-like aromas and flavors. A kiss of green almonds and salinity emerges with time in the glass, and this is a beautiful, classic Chardonnay from this team that will evolve gracefully for a good 20 years or more. 2018 Ridge Vineyards Estate ChardonnayCalifornia, UNITED STATES$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 14.3%Closure: CorkRidge produced its first chardonnay in 1962 from fully-mature vines planted in the late 1940s on the Monte Bello estate vineyard. Production never exceeded ten barrels, and Monte Bello chardonnay was sold principally at the winery. Several great vintages, among them the 1973, ‘74, ‘79, and ‘84, showed that their cool climate and fractured limestone sub-soils were well suited to the varietal. By 1985, the old vines were producing less then a half-ton per acre and were taken out. The younger vines, planted in the ‘70s, provide the majority of grapes today. Initially these newer plantings were on the “lower” vineyard— not yet farmed as part of the Monte Bello estate—so the wine was called “Santa Cruz Mountains” and these vines have long since been included.
Other Reviews....
The 2018 Chardonnay is classy, translucent and so vivid. Apricot, tangerine oil and light tropical overtones open up first, but the 2018 only starts to show all it has to offer with some aeration. The layers start to fill out, and yet the 2018 never loses its sense of transparency and overall detail. A real sense of phenolic weight gives the wine its distinctive mountain feel. Drink 2022 - 2028.

Antonio Galloni - VinousComing all from the estate Monte Bello Vineyard, the 2018 Chardonnay Estate offers a medium gold hue as well rocking notes of caramelized apples, white flowers, honeysuckle, and crushed rocks. These all carry to a medium-bodied Chardonnay with bright acidity, a focused, chiseled texture, terrific minerality, and just a kiss of background oak. It's going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and have two decades of longevity, if not longer. Drink 2024 - 2044.

The 2017 Chardonnay Estate has a Burgundian reductive quality as well as first-rate notes of caramelized orchard fruits, crushed rock, and subtle toasty, nutty notes. Rich, medium to full-bodied, with bright acidity, it has beautiful mid-palate depth, and well as the class and structure to keep for 15+ years. This is beautifully done.

A small percentage (4%) of fruit from Sonoma’s cool, ocean-influenced Russian River Valley adds diverse texture and flavour. Fermented in French oak barrels (16% new) then aged for a further 9 months in the same barrels on its yeast lees with regular stirring.

2022 Roc Breia (by Theo Dancer) ChardonnayBurgundy, FRANCE$255. 00Bottle$3060.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkRoc Breïa is an exciting new project in the Maconnais led by Chassagne-Montrachet's Theo Dancer (of Domaine Vincent Dancer fame). In 2021, Theo was invited to visit a mature, 10-hectare vineyard in the Bray district of the Maconnais that two investors had recently purchased. Dancer immediately saw the potential of the mature vines and limestone-rich soils. He agreed to manage the project, but only on the condition that he could control everything. Taking over in July 2021, with the help of full-time vigneron Bastien Cubillé, Dancer immediately began raising the vineyard work to his standards, bringing the soils and vines back into balance, planting cover crops, and cultivating inter-vine.
Other Reviews....
The 2022 Chardonnay has turned out beautifully, bursting with aromas of pear, white flowers, bread dough and hazelnuts, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy palate with a satiny attack that segues into a charming, lively mid-palate, with good cut and a saline finish. Dancer sold off two-thirds of his crop in 2021, but the quality of his raw materials in 2022 should permit a less draconian selection. Drink 2023-2035.

When I lived in England towards the end of the last century, Sancerre was quite the thing. I like it. Used to drink the odd bottle too. Good with fish and chips.
Altogether classic. White nectarine and gooseberry, brine and blackcurrant, a little rub of nettle. It’s fleshy and flavoursome, but not overt, discreet, gently creamy and chalky, a bit of the old ‘mineral’ and crushed rock, passionfruit and grapefruit on a composed and pretty long finish. Delightful.

Romano Dogliotti La Caudrina Moscato d'asti (375ml)Piedmont, ITALY$22. 99Bottle$275.88 DozenABV: 5%Closure: CorkA superb example of Moscato d Asti.
The wine is made by gently pressing the grapes with a bag press. The must is filtered and pumped into stainless steel vats where it is held at a temperature of –2ºC until ready for a controlled temperature ferment. Bright straw colour. The wine pours with a vigorous spritz, but it is not effervescent like Spumante. Magnificent aromatic nose – very intense, with notes of muscat, raisins and super ripe sultana. The palate has weight, and a generous creamy mouthfeel supported by gentle spritz which freshens the palate and accentuates the acidity. The palate displays considerable viscosity – which was not expected, followed by very grapey flavours of sultana and raisins. Excellent length, clean finish, with very long sultana and spice aftertaste. A delightful new sweet wine taste experience. Serve lightly chilled.

Royal Tokaji has been making the 5 puttonyos style since 1990. The Blue Label is made with at least 90% Furmint and a touch of Hárslevelű, with berries mainly sourced from the producer’s long-term contract growers. Golden in colour, the 2016 vintage bursts with dried apricot, peach, fig honey and Osmanthus, tinted with beeswax and pepper. After aging in second or third-use Hungarian oak casks for two years, the palate displays spiced apricot and honeyed fig flavours, with Furmint’s tell-tale acidity spine (9.9g/l), followed by a lip-smacking spicy finish. Sugar level sits at 158 g/l, much higher than the 120 g/l hallmark for 5 puttonyos.

2024 Sadie Family Swartland Skerpioen Chenin Blanc PalominoSwartland, SOUTH AFRICA$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkNamed after the abundant native scorpions that make their home here, Skerpioen is an unirrigated, 2.4-hectare, 80-plus-year-old vineyard of half Palomino and half Chenin Blanc, just 2km from the Atlantic Ocean and overlooking the Elands Bay. The soils here are very sandy and chalky, a type that Sadie likens to the white albarizas of Andalucía (fitting then that the vines here are 50% Palomino). This is one of the coolest parts of the Swartland yet it's also a very dry location (with an average rainfall of only around 300mm per year). This naturally restricts the yields and concentrates the fruit, magnifying the vineyards' characteristic saline intensity. This parcel produces a tiny yield of 24 hl/ha on average. The grapes are picked and pressed together and naturally co-ferment in old wooden casks. The result is a stunning and complex white that is completely unique. As always, this is Sadie's most mineral, racy and low alcohol white.
Other Reviews....
Fresh apricots, salted olives, sea shells, lemon curd and sage on the nose, as well as salted almonds. It’s creamy, textured and medium- to full-bodied, with a saline freshness. Long and delicious. Field blend of chenin blanc and palomino. Drink or hold.

Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.comThe 2024 Skerpioen is the Chenin Blanc Palomino blend on limestone soils next to the coast, this year's fruit picked early. "The wine was much fuller than I thought and one of the best wines we have made from the site," according to Sadie. The Chenin part speaks louder than the Palomino at the moment, sea spray and shucked oyster shells unfolding on the nose. The palate is fresh and vibrant, very saline in style, certainly very marine influenced with Palomino finally finding its voice on the finish. Superb. Drink 2027-2042.

2024 Sadie Family Stellenbosch Mev. Kirsten Chenin BlancStellenbosch, SOUTH AFRICA$430. 00Bottle$5160.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkSadie has been working with Chenin off this "truly incredible" granite vineyard at the foot of Bothmaskop Mountain in Stellenbosch's Jonkershoek Valley since 2006. With most of the vines planted between 1905 and 1920, the mere one hectare (belonging to Mrs Kirsten and her family) is recognised as the oldest Chenin Blanc in South Africa. Due to the age of the vines, Sadie has been interplanting mass-selection cuttings to prolong the vineyard's life, though the younger vines are vinified separately. In time, the younger fraction will also be included in the blend.
Eben describes this hyper-rare wine as his most powerful and structured Chenin Blanc, juxtaposing silky elegance with immense texture, density and power. It ferments in an old foudre with lots of solids and is bottled unfiltered after 12 months of aging.
Other Reviews....
Lots of spiced pear, mango stone, honey, papaya and honeysuckle on the nose of this full-bodied white. It’s creamy, rich and delicious, with incredible generosity and volume but reined in by fresh acidity. Great balance. Hard not to drink. Chenin blanc from a vineyard planted in 1905. Drink or hold.

Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.comThe 2024 Mev. Kirsten comes from the oldest Chenin in the Cape, originally planted in 1905 and then every other row was pulled out in 1946. Factoid: it was the first vineyard in South Africa ploughed by tractor. It has a fragrant bouquet with sea spray, light lanolin and crushed chalky scents. The palate is beautifully balanced with a wonderful texture, perfectly balanced, laser-like focus, with a deft hint of lemongrass on the prolonged finish. Brilliant. Drink 2027-2049.
