2023 Colle Marianna SoaveSoave, ITALY$29. 99Bottle$359.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 1 Years (2025-2026)ABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinDelicious pear, green apple and lime fruits with a river stone like mouth feel and dry, slatey finish.
Coming from the commune of Ronca in the heart of Garganega country, Monte Ronca is a creation of local specialist, Antonio Fattori, an acknowledged Soave-master. Most the fruit for wines comes from the hills to the north of this commune, a specific site called Monte Calvarino, which peaks at 680 m (the inactive volcano from which the wine takes its name). At this altitude, this beautiful cool site provides a perfect environment for a higher grade, single site Soave. The hills around Monte Calvarino (in comparative terms to the region in general) are particularly steep, and from a viticultural perspective, pose some challenges. But to Antonio, this is critical to capture depth of flavour and structure, as the best expressions of Soave are never found on the valley floor where it gets too warm. Here, the ancient volcanic soils impart a flinty minerality to the hand-harvested fruit, while in the cellar, lees stirring and subtle oak ageing and varying levels of appassimento add a rich texture and further complexity to the wine.
Brilliant pale straw colour with subtle flashes of green around the edges and a watery hue. Drifting out of the glass are aromas of pear, lime and green apple skin followed by some fresh Mediterranean herb and wet slate notes. Sliding across the palate are delicious pear, green apple and lime fruits infused with fresh herbs which have a wet slate and mineral underbelly. Crisp acidity with a river stone like mouth feel. Long, dry, slatey finish.

2018 Contini Vernaccia di Oristano FlorSardinia, ITALY$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 15.5%Closure: CorkThe production of Vernaccia in the lower Valley of the Tirso in Sardinia, has its roots in very ancient times. Maturation takes place in chestnut barrels which are oxygenated, and the wine develops a flor, a natural, native yeast growth which acts as a protective layer, while also imparting certain flavours and aromas to the wine. Sherry is also made with a similar production method, and the resulting wine is not unlike a full-bodied fino Sherry.

The nose offers up a fino sherry like aromatic profile lead by an assortment of nuts including hazelnut and almonds with some salty saline like notes also present. Craven is one of the most interesting wine projects in South Africa. It's part of the rediscovery of the best vineyard sites in Stellenbosch that's currently underway, with a whole group of young guns looking to find the gems and make interesting wines from them. The duo knows their vineyards intricately, and craft only single-vineyard wines, picked early and respectfully to best reflect site and vintage.
Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak, April 2017Although a lot of the wine drinking world think and assume Pinot Gris is a 'white grape', it is in fact a lovely coppery/dark rose skinned grape. As there is so much colour and flavour trapped in the skins, the destemmed fruit is fermented like a red wine. The juice is lightly pumped over or punched down throughout fermentation in open top fermenters, which gives the wine a beautiful rose coloured hue. After 8 months of maturing in old French oak barrels, the wine is bottled unfined & unfiltered.

Mick Craven is a mad Aussie winemaker drongo type who shifted to Stellenbosch and is doing great things in the avant garde set over there. Great to see his wines in Australia. Macerated for two weeks, this gris is a textural feast. Well handled. It opens with some reduction, so give it some air.Scents of apples, nashi pear, struck match, pomegranate. Chewy texture, ribbons of puckering texture, juicy core and a while lots of flavour appears here this is way more about the ride the wine gives you. Clips a long at a fair pace, feels refreshing yet kind of serious too. It’s an instant ‘yep, would drink a bottle’ kind of feel for me. Does the variety justice, shows complexity and heaps of personality while remaining trim and refreshing. Nice one.

Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak, April 2017Bush vine Chenin blanc from the Polkadraai Hills, which varies from granite-based soils on the higher elevations to the lighter, sandy soils in lower lying areas. The wine is whole bunch pressed to 500L barrels, where it is left to ferment naturally. It completes malolactic fermentation and spends a total of 9 months in barrel before being bottled, unfined and unfiltered.

Unsure how well known it is but Covid era South Africa is in prohibition and South African wine producers are hurting real bad. Supporting South African wine producers, if you can, is a good thing, of course amongst many charitable activities. Mick Craven cut his teeth amongst a sect of avant garde Australian and international producers but has landed in Stellenbosch for his eponymous wine project. Here’s chenin, gently made, left on lees in barrels, natural ferment, no additions aside a smidge of sulphur.Scents of lemon soap, faint cashew, some sandalwood notes, a touch of flint. Smells real good. Palate is flinty too, vibrant, alive, energetic and chock full of zingy acidity with good flavour and freshness on show. Tart, citrus-driven flavours and that lick of nuttiness is the deal. Excellent, tightly found finish for those seeking longevity from their white wines too. Super stuff.

This wine is made from Muscat a Petit Grain which is grown on limestone-based clay soils in the Beaumes de Venise AOC of the Southern Rhone.
When the grapes reach optimal ripeness they are picked by hand and pressed to tank, where they are allowed to ferment for 21 days. Grape spirit is added to stop the fermentation, fortifying the wine and retaining the natural residual sugar (110g/L). The resultant wine is full-bodied but refreshingly elegant and displays intensely fruity aromas. Pair it with a fruit tart, cheese, or even roast duck. -

2018 Domaine Didier Dagueneau Les Jardins de Babylone Jurancon SecJurancon, FRANCE$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkPouilly Fumé and Sancerre are the global benchmarks for Sauvignon Blanc, and there is no bigger name or more highly regarded producer in the area than Domaine Didier Dagueneau. Now under the guidance of Didier's talented son Louis-Benjamin, the wines still follow his ethos that authentic Pouilly Fumé requires healthy fruit from low yielding, old vines to produce the purest, and most intense and vibrantly fresh wine. That's not to say these wines are typical of the appellation. Given the severely low yields and approach to élevage, Dagueneau wines emphasise a creamy texture rather than bracing acidity, and combine mineral flavours with exotic fruits to supreme effect.
In 2002 on his search to find a worthy source of grapes to produce sweet wines, Didier Dagueneau happened across a spectacular natural amphitheatre vineyard in Jurançon at the foot of the Pyrenees. With the vines in good shape and only minor changes needed for his farming techniques, Didier set about to produce wines that highlight the natural minerality of the soil along with his trademark balance and poise. While a sweet wine is also made from this vineyard (100% Petit Manseng), this sec (dry) release is incredibly rare and utilises all five of the permitted grapes for Jurançon. Regional heroes Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng are included, along with obscure local varieties Courbu, Lauzet, and Camarelet, the last of which is the rarest of the group and is the dominant varietal in the blend. Winemaking is similar to the Blanc etc… release with both cigar shaped barrels and steel tanks used for maturation.

Blanc Fume de Pouilly is the Domaine's only wine that is not terroir or soil specific, instead produced from the fruit of four vineyards. Two are plots situated away from the Saint-Andelain hill: one a parcel of 15-20 year old vines on flinty-clay soils; the other in the lieu-dit of Les Coques on limestone/marl (white clay) soil. This fruit was blended with young-vine parcels from Le Bois de Saint-Andelain itself. It was fermented in a mix of new and three-four year old barrels and then matured in both wood and tank.
Please note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/label damage.
Other Reviews....
Shows a lovely twinge of savory at first, followed by a rather large core of white asparagus, creamed gooseberry and white peach flavors. The savory note reemerges through the finish, along with hints of light bitter almond and paraffin. Drink now through 2024.
