There is just enough reduction present to blur the nuances of the fresh and cool aromas of citrus peel and various floral elements. There is good if not special concentration to the wonderfully sleek medium-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the balanced, dry and stylish finale that is firm enough to repay up to a decade of keeping. Drink through 2029+.

Purchased grapes which went through a long slow alcoholic fermentation. Pale lemon colour, the bouquet is reticent. Plenty of stuffing here though, and weighted to the back, as we like. A fresh energetic finish, with good but not trenchant acidity. Drink from 2026-2031.

A slightly riper though almost as elegant nose combines notes of petrol and citrus with those of acacia, mineral reduction and crushed fennel. There is more volume and richness to the less prominently stony flavors that possess a highly seductive mouthfeel, all wrapped in a superbly long finish. This isn't quite as refined as the Genevrières but it's even more complex. I would observe that while the two wines are qualitative equals, they offer two very different expressions. Drink through 2029+.

Wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, clear honey, buttery pastry, toasted nuts and white flowers, the 2021 Meursault 1er Cru Clos Richemont is medium to full-bodied, satiny and ample, with racy acids and a long, mineral finish. This site has performed well in this cooler vintage.

The terroir is made up of small stones in red soil, quite similar to Caillerets. Clean pretty pale primrose, with a brilliant tensile concentration through the middle, not very Meursault this terroir but extremely persistent and makes Genevrières alongside seem a bit massive. Very impressive in its linear style. Drink from 2026-2032.

Fresh and bright aromas consist of petrol, lemon zest and green apple scents. The racy, detailed and attractively textured middleweight flavors possess very good mid-palate volume while delivering better than average depth and persistence on the bone-dry finale. This is lovely for its level and worth a look. Drink through 2025+.

Just their own vines. Mid yellow, quite robust nose, plenty of fruit if not quite the length of the great years, fresh acidity, zesty and makes one salivate. Still one of the best Bourgogne Blancs around. Drink from 2024-2026.

This is also quite smoky with its aromas of green fruit, lemon-lime and herbal tea. There is notably better size, weight and power to the broad-shouldered flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine supporting the clean, dry and seriously long finale. This robust effort will need at least 4 to 5 years of patience. Drink through 2028+.

A fine cleans primrose colour. The fruit is attractively ripe without being heavy, a little yellow plum in the mix, which certainly fleshes out the middle, a touch of quince, some bitter orange rind, then a firmer finish. Quite backward at this stage.

A smoky mix of apple, pear and citrus leads to solidly voluminous and intense middle weight flavors that conclude in an appealingly crisp, clean and very dry finale. This is a very good Bourgogne that should also be capable of repaying a few years of keeping if desired. Drink through 2024+.

No new wood for the generic Bourgogne. Pale lemon and lime, slight sandalwood to the nose. Pure and crisp with a lemon and salty finish, excellent density a little barrel toast. Long finish. This Bourgogne Chardonnay shows typical Boillot purity and precision.

Here too the nose is quasi-Chablis like with similar nuances of iodine, mineral reduction and oyster shell along with a variety of citrus influences. The sleek and almost painfully intense broad-shouldered flavors flash plenty of minerality on the dense, muscular and bone-dry finale that leaves zero doubt that this will need extended patience if you're to see it at its peak. This youthfully austere effort has length to burn and it's not every day that you encounter a Corton-Charlemagne that can go head to head with a great Chevalier but this one can. Drink 2036+.

Produced from purchased grapes, the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is serious and structured, enforcing a change of pace after the series of Puligny-Montrachet grands crus. Mingling notes of pear and citrus oil with hints of toasted bread, white flowers and praline, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and chalky, with palpable structuring dry extract and tangy balancing acids. Drink 2025 - 2045.

The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, one of Boillot’s strongest wines, has a delightful bouquet with well-defined scents of dried honey, hazelnut and crushed rock, quite Meursault-like in style. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity, not amazingly complex overall, yet I admire its tension and length, with quite a persistent spicy aftertaste. Very fine. Drink 2023 - 2035.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chavy was formed in the mid-2000's following the retirement of Gerard Chavy. Jean-Louis and his brother Alain divided the family holdings, with Jean-Louis now bottling his share of Bourgogne Blanc, Puligny-Montrachet village including a separate cuvée from the lieu-dit Les Charmes, along with the premier crus of Folatieres, Perrieres, Champ Gains, and Clavoillons.

Working in his spacious brand new winemaking facility and temperature controlled cellar, vinification is classic whole bunch press with cool settling for 24 hours before fermentation using only natural yeasts. New oak use is restrained with the village wine receiving 15% new oak, and the premier crus only 25%. These are effortless and unforced wines with the emphasis squarely on purity of fruit and vineyard definition.

Jean-Louis owns a 0.146 ha plot of Les Perrieres which was planted in 1986.

From ten small parcels of 20-60 year old vines. Les Tremblot, ("more Puligny in character, as the soil is argileous," says Jean-Louis); Les Meix, Les Levrons (more rounded wine for there are more stones and gravel here and it is not so heavy), Corvée des Vignes and Les Reuchaux. These small vineyard holdings are all just below the premier cru’s close to the village and cover the diversity of Puligny from north to south. Just 20% new oak for this wine which always shows excellent balance and drinking pleasure from an early age.

Cask sample. Deep, mealy citrus nose marked by oak spice and oatmeal, but not dominated by that. Gently chewy and deliciously fresh. Straightforward, clean-cut, all present and correct with a long, tangy finish. Drink 2024-2029.

Joseph Colin initially trained at Domaine Marc Colin, working alongside his brother, Pierre-Yves, to make the family wines. In 2016, Joseph decided to create his own Domaine, and, subsequently, inherited just over six hectares of vineyards from his family holdings, representing about nineteen different appellations, to start his exciting new venture. Keeping yields low, Joseph picks on the early side to retain an unmistakable purity and freshness in his wines. He likes the tension and vibrancy in his whites, and feels it is a signature of his output. Purity is a word that Joseph particularly associates with his wines, since he doesn't like heavy handed or reductive and oaky wines, but rather he allows the different terroirs to shine through truly in the glass. The wines display a tense and vibrant profile, championing minerality and finesse yet there is a comforting richness in the mid-palate.

Riper though still quite fresh and bright aromas include those of apple compote, acacia blossom and a suggestion of crushed star anise. There is good volume to the nicely concentrated and fleshy medium weight flavors that possess a sappy mouthfeel that buffers the bone-dry, youthfully austere and balanced finale. Here too a few years of cellar time should prove beneficial. Drink through 2027+.

Young vines, the first vintage was 2019. Full mid yellow. This joins Les Frionnes the most stylish and floral of the wines to date on the nose. White fruit on the palate a little richer and riper with a softer finish and slightly oaky. Drink from 2024-2026.

OSA is an ancient name for Saint-Aubin, and is a blend of four premier cru plots that were all too small to be bottled separately; Sentier du Clou, Combes, Roches Dumay, and En Vermarain.

A markedly restrained if pretty nose grudgingly offers up its array of citrus, floral and mineral reduction notes. The racy and very sleek medium-bodied flavors exude a bracing salinity on the firm, compact and linear finish. This is notably austere and a bit lean though my sense is that this will flesh out with bottle age. With that said, I would advise buying this only if you have the intent to cellar it. A blend of Sentier du Clou, Combes, Roches Dumay, En Vermarain, which were all too small to be made separately, the most coming from Sous Roche Dumay. This will be named something along the lines of Cuvée de l’Oratoire, but the decision had not been taken at the time I tasted. Pale lemon colour, while the nose is quite discreet, quite lean on the tenser end of the spectrum, with various different citrus fruits including a bit of orange rind. Medium plus length. Pale primrose. This is fleshier perhaps with a touch of oak. This comes through also on the palate where the white fruit is joined by a mentholated note. The fresh lime streak at the finish is helpful.

Domaine Faiveley was founded in 1825, and while they have been known for producing outstanding quality wines throughout this time, they are widely considered one of the most improved domaines in Burgundy over the last decade. Since taking over from his father Francois, Erwan Faiveley has made a deliberate decision to emphasise freshness and purity of fruit rather than fruit extraction, and at times, excessive use of new oak. This change has resulted in wines with greater refinement and vineyard character expression.

On the border of Puligny-Montrachet, this is a south-east facing plot with a mix of silt and stony soil. The site was once covered with hornbeam trees, 'charmes' in French, hence the name.

Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy started out as a négociant working for Maison Leroy, which was founded in Auxey-Duresses in 1868 by her great grandfather, François. Since then, her fame has spread right across the world of fine wine as part-owner and former co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. She is also the formidable driving force behind Domaine Leroy and Domaine d'Auvenay, this latter her personal domain based in Saint-Romain. In 2015 she celebrated her 50th vintage of choosing the wines for the family négociant business, and continues to show the prowess and judgment that earned her the moniker "Guardian of Great Wines".

Maison Leroy is a central part of the Leroy portfolio providing a wealth of wines hand-selected by Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy herself. Her lifetime of experience as a winemaker producing wines from almost every appellation in the Côte d'Or makes her one of the most experienced vignerons and tasters in the region. Lalou selects the Maison wines by blind tasting hundreds of wines each year and selecting from the top wines presented. She does this with no ties or obligations to buy from growers, allowing her to select wines purely based on quality. It is well known that she pays a premium for the wines she chooses, to allow herself to cherry-pick the greatest expressions of each terroir. She stakes her considerable reputation on her expert palate and market knowledge, selecting all the Maison’s out-turn entirely from what she has tasted. Following the initial selection process the wines are then aged at the domaine and selected for release when she believes the wines are ready. This is one of a few houses that can offer twenty, thirty or forty year-old wines that have lain unmoved in the cellar since bottling.

1978 Maison Leroy Puligny-Montrachet Champ Gain Premier Cru was released from the winery in 2021. While we do everything possible to ensure back vintage wines are of the finest provenance, old wines are not guaranteed in any way. Be aware that flavour profiles can change dramatically in older wines. If you are unsure that you will enjoy the flavours that come with older wines, we recommend you don't buy them. Founded in 1797 Maison Louis Latour has survived the ages, and has always made it a point of honour to remain family owned. It is now run by the seventh Louis Latour who represents the 11th generation of the founding family, who like each generation before him, has worked hard to preserve the company’s unique heritage whilst ensuring the future with an ambitious and visionary spirit. The Latour family Domaine has been built up over the years and today covers 50 hectares of exceptional vineyards.

Widely considered the finest vineyard in Meursault, Les Perrières is marked by thin, rocky soils with high proportions of limestone. Across the various parts of Perrières, the topsoil is the thinnest, consisting of just a crumbling of limestone marl over the hard bedrock. The presence of the limestone helps to contribute minerality to the wines, a characteristic that Perrières wines are particularly noted for, especially in relation to Charmes or Genevrières wines.

For three generations, the Valette family has lived in Chaintré, a small village on the border between Mâconnais and Beaujolais. They grow only Chardonnay on fifteen acres scattered in five villages. The domain was created in 1977, when Gérard Valette was one of the first in the area to leave the local cooperative and start bottling his own wine. After completing wine training, son Philippe joined in 1990 and then decided to convert the family's vineyards to organic farming, using biodynamic methods since 1992.

The Valette's are known for their specific style, wines raised with thorough lees-contact and without racking. They have remained true to this style of winemaking since the 1950s. It is a sort of family tradition that requires accuracy as well as painstaking detail knowledge of the indigenous yeasts and the wine’s proneness to develop reductive flavours. If the estate's wines through the late 1990s were simply powerful, textural examples of high-quality white Burgundy, the wines being released today belong in a category of their own. Complex and sapid, these are fascinating wines although you should be prepared to find wines that are quite different from any of the Valettes' neighbours. Anyone who appreciates the Jura bottlings of Jean-François Ganevat or the Thomas Pico Chablis wines is likely to love them. Valette's wines often benefit from extended aeration so decanting is recommended.

Pouilly-Fuissé produces the grandest wines of the Mâconnais and its best wines can age for many years. Average age in Valette's plots is over 60 years old, and following vinification the wine is aged for 30 months in older barrels. As with all of Valette's wines, this will benefit from extended aeration so decanting is recommended.

Pascal Robin is a passionate vigneron and runs his negociant business from the cellar of his house in Quenne, just west of Chablis. He sources grapes from across the Chablis region, and works to biodynamic principles in the cellar including respecting the lunar cycles, and a light touch with vinification. Ageing occurs in a mix of stainless steel tanks and old oak barrels, and the wines stay on their lees for a period of 10 to 18 months. Authentic Chablis made with exacting standards designed to work wonders with a range of cuisine.

L'Oree Delys is a vineyard located in the commune of Milly, with the vines planted in 1938. The plot is north facing, situated next to the premier cru vineyard of Les Lys. Pascal uses only indigenous yeast for fermentation, and vinifies this wine with 50% in stainless steel vats and 50% old neutral oak.

From vines planted in 1938 not far from premier cru Les Lys, the 2020 Chablis Vieilles Vignes L'Orée Délys reveals attractive aromas of citrus zest, honeycomb, white flowers and pear, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive palate that's pure, fleshy and precise. This is a strong effort from Robin. Drink 2022 - 2030.

The premier cru vineyard of Fourchaume is located on the right bank of the Serein River, opposite the town of La Chapelle. Given the generally sunny West/South-West orientation, and soils composed with more brown clays than the stony terroir elsewhere, this is an especially intense and complex vineyard for Chablis. Pascal uses only indigenous yeast for fermentation, and vinifies this wine in 100% old neutral oak barrels.

A markedly more restrained nose grudgingly reveals its array of green apple, lemon rind, wet stone and a variety of spice wisps. There is outstanding size, weight and power to the intensely stony big-bodied flavors that conclude in a compact, tightly wound, very dry and youthfully austere finale. This possesses excellent development potential that should allow it to repay at least a decade of keeping. With that said, it's not so backward that it couldn't be approached after 5 or so years. The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, the only cuvée that was not bottled when I tasted it, has a well-defined bouquet with crushed rock filtering through the citrus fruit, kernals of orange rind and litchi. The palate is well balanced with an aniseed tinged entry, good depth and vibrancy with a dash of spice, stem ginger, on the finish. Excellent. Drink 2024-2040.

Recently racked, not yet on finings, so a little bit unclear to the eye as the lees still in suspension. Something of everything on the nose, a touch of tangerine, a little bit of biscuit barrel. A significant weight of fruit, a good thread of mineral acidity, a little more opulence in fruit profile. A little higher in alcohol perhaps.

A more floral-suffused nose features very bright and fresh aromas of Granny Smith apples, essence of pear and a variety of citrus influences. The 2020 Meursault Cuvée Tête de Murger has a well-defined nose, although I was expecting a little more presence and energy compared to previous vintages that I have tasted over the years. The palate is well balanced and shows more gumption, fine acidity with a touch of ginger, well-defined with red apple, nectarine and orange pith on the finish. Just give it some time for the aromatics to open. Drink 2023-2036.

Bottled late November. Fine pale primrose. The bouquet is notably more backward. I am waiting a moment and then the sense of volume emerges. Significant volume here, a thick but not lush texture, enormous energy, this will need a couple more years in bottle than any of the others.

A cool, pure and restrained nose reflects airy and elegant notes of acacia, green apple, anise and a whiff of citrus rind. This is fine Meursault villages with the innate finesse of Tillets on display. Drink through 2026+.

The 2020 Meursault Les Tillets has a light white flower and linen scented nose, quite Zen-like at first but gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and vibrant with a touch of spice on the finish. Very fine, though maybe it just needs a little more mineralité. Drink 2023-2035.

Bottled end November. Mid yellow in colour, but fresh. There is an impressive weight of fruit for this hillside vineyard. Significant volume of fresh fruit, tinged with its usual lime blossom character, and good crisp finish with just the right acidity. Plenty of flesh nonetheless. Nice finale on fresh apple fruit.

A gentle touch of wood sets off elegant, pure and exceptionally fresh aromas of just sliced green apple, citrus confit and discreet floral nuances. There is excellent volume and richness to the bigger and markedly more powerful flavors that brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract on the wonderfully long finish. Still in barrel unracked and unfined. Full bright yellow with a little cheerful plump toasty oak. The weight shows first, the Corton-Charlemagne minerals come through behind. A wine, which is brooding and biding its time. Very good acidity, plenty of fruit weight. All is there, with as much power as is desirable before losing balance, and a fine long finish.

A few green reflections in the pale yellow. There is clearly more weight to this than the other cuvees, the fruit is a little richer, especially at the back where the oak comes into play, but there is enough acidity to support the framework. And a few tannins. Cooked apple to finish.

Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.

Boisson’s parcel of the Herbeux climat was planted in 1961, and the vineyard is just east of the Meursault village bordering Lafon’s ‘Clos de la Barre’. Bottled unfiltered after 18 months in oak, 10% being new.

Based in the village of Meursault, Domaine Boisson-Vadot release wines under three labels from the same estate; Domaine Boisson-Vadot from Bernard, along with his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. The wines across the three ‘labels’ are all made at the cellar in Meursault. No herbicide or fertiliser is used in the vineyard. Harvest and sorting are done manually. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 18-21 months, with up to 40% new oak used for the top cuvées. Fined but not filtered. On top of that, the vines mostly carry a decent amount of age – some 60 years plus – all closely tended by hand before what Pierre Boisson calls ‘slow, patient winemaking with not too much oak and minimal lees stirring’. This tiny production Bourgogne Blanc is sourced from six parcels stretching from Meursault and Auxey-Duresses across to Volnay.

Before returning to Domaine Rougeot, Pierre-Henri worked at Domaine De Montille in Volnay, as well as selling oak barrels to some of the finest names in Burgundy. The connections formed during this time have allowed Pierre-Henri to source from a collection of prime plots throughout the Cote, favouring only organically farmed grapes. Pierre-Henri has refined his winemaking along the lines of luminaries such as Lalou Bize-Leroy of Domaine Leroy, and as a result he uses 100% whole bunch to macerate the reds which results in characterful yet silky structure on the palate. When it comes to pressing the reds, he uses a modern vertical press rather than the common pneumatic press to extract very pure, concentrated and fresh juice. The whites are pressed directly to barrels, with no battonage and aging sur lees. There is neither filtration nor clarification and only indigenous yeasts are used for the fermentations. The oak regiment is light with enough new oak to lift the attributes of each wine but it's subtle enough to be almost impossible to notice. Pierre-Henri is making waves in France and around the world and is a name to watch.

The Sous la Velle vineyard is located at the foot of the Meursault hill, opposite the Chateau de Meursault. Soils here are much richer and contain less limestone than other parts of Meursault.

The first impression on the nose is of caramelized tree fruit and flint, but this Saint-Aubin is still very young. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, saline, lightly spiced with an almost Charmes-like finish. This is work seeking out. Drink 2024-2037.

Pale colour with a light lime tint. No new wood from here on. Some apple but also fresh pears here, a pleasing but not excessive ripeness. Gorgeous fruit on the second half of the palate, a rounded Meursault still with a fresh thread through the middle.

Here the ripe aromas are completely dominated by sulfur which understandably blurs the nuance. More interesting are the super-sleek and beautifully well-detailed flavors that exhibit fine punch on the citrusy and agreeably dry but somewhat one-dimensional finish. This is awkward today though there does not appear to be any particular reason that it shouldn't properly clean up. Drink 2027+.

The 2019 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru, which comes from the same climat as the red (though that cannot be stated on the label), has a well-defined, fragrant praline and almond-tinged bouquet. The palate is taut and fresh with a fine bead of acidity. Lightly spiced with ginger and a touch of rhubarb, it feels quite linear at the moment and does not quite kick on toward the finish. Give it the benefit of the doubt and afford it 2–3 years in bottle. Drink 2023 - 2034.

Pale lemon and lime. A more restrained nose, far from the madding crowd of 2019, this Meursault-Blagny has kept its freshness. It offers greater tensile strength than the village Meursault, but not significantly more volume. Lemon apple finish.

Here too there is a hint of sulfur on the lightly wooded aromas of white peach, citrus and pretty floral nuances. The plumper and rounder medium weight flavors tighten up on the equally dry, intense and notably more complex finish. This attractive effort should be accessible young but reward a few years of keeping too. Drink 2025+.

The 2019 Saint-Aubin En Charmois 1er Cru comes from purchased must. The simple bouquet does not quite have the complexity of others that I tasted from this Premier Cru. The palate is better, offering fine balance, crisp citrus fruit and touches of orange peel, although I find the finish a little short. Drink 2022 - 2028.

Pale light lemon colour, middleweight, 30% new wood, light white fruit, medium personality. Decent length, apples at the back.

From 25 to 60 year old vines with fermentation taking place in a combination of stainless steel tanks, cement and oak barrels.
Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with greenish toned edges and a watery hue. Aromas of ripe pear and peach are complimented by dried honey, crème brulee, subtle bees wax and spicy cashew notes. Rich fleshy pear and peach fruits overlay dried honey, wet stone and delicate spice characters. Gently creamy in its feel it possesses good underlying freshness as well as ample depth and texture. Finishes long and flavoursome.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

As is usually the case chez Colin, this is the most elegant wine among these 1ers with its cool, pure and airy nose of lemon peel, mineral reduction, apple, pear and soft floral nuances. There is very good concentration to the seductively textured but precise medium-bodied flavors that flash plenty of minerality on the saline and strikingly persistent finish. Note well however that this chiseled effort is very firm and is a wine that is going to require extended patience.

(Colin's vines are located just across the road from his Charmes and a bit closer to the village of Meursault): Bright, pale yellow-green. Wonderfully delicate aromas of underripe pineapple, white peach, flowers, spices and crushed rock. Denser than Colin's other Meursault premier crus but its uncanny thickness is fully buffered by dusty, palate-staining minerality. This very pure wine shows the penetrating energy of a tungsten filament. Consistent from start to endless finish. There's still an impression of sweetness here as the wine has two grams per liter of residual sugar, but Colin suspects that one of his three 350-liter barrels has not yet completely finished its sugar fermentation.

(Jobard picked a full crop of grapes at the beginning of the harvest): Sexy scents of lemon drop and wild herbs. Tactile, juicy and spicy in the mouth, showing excellent lift and mineral energy to the flavors of citrus fruits, ginger and minerals. This wine is not lower in acidity after its malolactic fermentation than the 2015 was, noted Jobard. Finishes lively and long, with an intriguing saline nuance. A lovely vin de terroir in the making.

Notes of citrus oil, freshly baked bread, crisp Anjou pear, white flowers and orange oil introduce the 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, textural and incisive wine with a fleshy mid-palate allied with promising cut and grip. It's a fine success. Drink 2021 - 2040.

One barrel, in exchange. Paler colour even with a light green tint. Stones to the fore rather than flesh, but there is enough of the latter. Some citrus astringency behind, not a problem, and good persistence.
