Ridiculous value! Can I leave the review at that? I had to do a double take when I saw the RRP - wow! An articulate and expressive wine, this **** take on the classic Australian claret blend is a showstopper. It's a wine you just want to hang out with, such is its approachability and plentiful fruit. The consistency across the range of **** Wines I have seen of late speaks highly of its producer - bravo. And this super blend possesses that Scott Boland line and length reliability and magic.
Dark plums, black currants and a touch of mint from the small addition of Cabernet lie in the shadow of dark berries, plums and chocolate nibs. It's not a showy wine, yet it walks with charisma and a calming presence. A smattering of dried herbs and fine tannins adds a moreish factor on close coupled with that persistent finish. Great stuff and well played. Run to this.

The old Barossa reds were not the blockbuster monsters which are so popular today but rather, sought out a path of drinkability, while never sacrificing flavour. This is a welcome return to the past. There is 15% Cabernet Sauvignon included in the blend, which underwent a two week ferment with wild yeasts. Maturation was in a range of formats with 10% being new French oak. The fruit came from a range of Barossa sub-regions – Bethany, Greenock, Nuriootpa and Krondorf. 1,000 cases. Mauve/magenta in colour, the nose offers notes of blackberries, herbs, plums, mulberries, chocolate, coffee beans and mocha. A lingering finish with sleek tannins ties things together. Good focus here, and fine balance. This is indeed a more elegant style, but it lacks absolutely nothing in flavour. Apparently, Alex must have recently won Gold Lotto. Otherwise, why on earth would he be giving this away at such an amazingly cheap price.

Bowmore 16 Year Old Ruby Port Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 43%Good to see age statements making a comeback in the Duty-Free scene. Some tasters considered this a high point in Bowmore's 'Appellations Collection'. Matured in American Oak ex-Bourbon and European Oak Sherry casks before being finished in Portuguese x-Ruby Port casks. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... this indulgent, satisfying dram is the standout in this collection. Assuredly peaty on the nose, with cranberry, strawberry bubble gum, black currant mousse, and fine spices. It’s soothing and smooth in the mouth, showing milk chocolate, fudge cake, brown sugar, and salty smoke, then a finish of chocolate lava cake and peat smoke. (Travel Retail exclusive) 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com
In a way, we have to admire the sheer nerve it takes to lob 16-year-old Bowmore into Ruby Port. I daresay that requires a certain leap of faith. Colour: ripe apricot. Nose: well now, this isn’t half bad either; this time we’re veering more towards PX territory. Black pepper and plump black grapes, geranium, sandalwood, lonzo sausage, and very dark potting soil... Mouth: naturally it’s been crafted with great care, the cherry, blackcurrant and blackberry are all present and accounted for, though they’re nicely woven into that beloved salty and smoky malt base. Still, it does lean rather sweet... Finish: fairly long but the red fruits begin to take over, veering into smoked cherry jam with hints of fir wood. Or something along those lines. Comments: this one gave us a chuckle, which is quite the thing in these times. It’s a bit like the Eurovision Song Contest. 82 points - whiskyfun.com

Ardbeg Smoketrails Napa Valley Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$169. 99Bottle$2039.88 DozenABV: 46%The third edition in the Smoketrails series comes matured in a marriage of bourbon casks and x-Cabernet sauvignon casks from the Napa Valley in Northern California. Wine plus peat can be a bit of a lottery. Here, the Cabernet is said to take second place to the distillery's typically heavy phenols, leaving trace notes of baked rye, rich espresso and cool menthol. Bottled in August 2024 at a strength of 46% in a one litre format. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... Matured in bourbon barrels and cabernet sauvignon red wine casks, this is intensely peaty on first sniff, but it’s wonderfully aromatic peat fires, verging on bonfire smoke at times. Paired with this are aromas of plum, black olive tapenade, black truffle, and toasted sourdough. The palate mingles chocolate muffin, dried cranberry, spices, and peat smoke, with hints of menthol and eucalyptus stretching into the finish. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com
A fine dram, although ashiness is one of my least favourite elements of peated whisky, and the Ardbeg Smoketrails Napa Valley Edition has plenty of it. The wine influence is also not insignificant. All in all it is a minor miracle I scored it this high. - wordsofwhisky.com

Laphroaig The Cask Legacy Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 48%"...a sherry butt away from one of the best new whiskies of the year.” - Jim Murray
Initiated by Distillery manager, John Campbell as a tribute to the managers who preceded him, this Travel Retail Exclusive Laphroaig was left to rest in first-fill, over-charred ex-bourbon barrels before further maturing in large, new European oak hogsheads, never before used by the distillery. Laphroaig 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Gift Pack with GlassIslay, SCOTLAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 40%Cheaper than the standalone bottle, with a bonus glass!
From the remote island of Islay in the Western Isles of Scotland. Laphroaig, pronounced 'La-froyg', is a Gaelic word meaning 'the beautiful hollow by the broad bay'. The full history of Laphroaig seems to be lost in the mists of time. It's clear that the Irish had been distilling on Islay for many years and that the locals picked up the skills when they left, but because it was illegal the small stills on the farms were rarely discussed - just a nod and a wink in the right direction! What is known, is that the family called the Johnstons started farming there around 1800, and that soon after messers Charles and Willie Doig were asked to do some 'work on a distillery' at Laphroaig. By 1815 Laphroaig's reputation had spread and the tax man was getting suspicious so they 'officially' established 'Johnston & Johnston' - the legend of Laphroaig had begun.
Laphroaig is a malt to either love or hate. Full of the smoke and iodine, seaweed character Islay has become famous for, it has spurred some commentators to describe it as 'mouthwash', 'hospital gauze' or at best, 'medicinal'. Suffice to say, this is not a whisky for the faint hearted. Take Laphroaig neat like a stalwart, or with a splash of soft water. Roll it around on your tongue, release the pungent earthy aroma of blue peat smoke, the sweet nuttiness of the barley, the delicate, heathery perfume of Islay's stream and either swallow or spit. The final judgment on Laphroaig must always be left to the individual. 40% Alc./Vol.
Re-tasted 2019... Tamer than previous incarnations, earthier too with a farmyard edge. Less iodine / elastoplast than before, more peppermint, baked citrus, kipper and lanolin, creaming up towards the finish, trailling off with hints of Fisherman’s Friend.
Other reviews... 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022
...An essay in voluptuousness. The oils speak volumes here, gathering the two-toned phenols and gathering them in all corners of the palate and ensuring they stick there... The finish is not so much enormous as controlled and long, with a sublime bit of mocha moving in for the last blissful moments. Glorious still, after all these years. 40% alc./vol. 94 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019
...This expression offers an uncompromising note of brine-laden peat and iodine, with charcoal and sweeter fruit notes also present. The palate is equally out there, with old-fashioned fabric Band-Aids, bladderwrack seaweed, black pepper, smouldering peat, vanilla, caramel, and sweet oak. The finish is as big as everything else, with barbecue, iodine, and asphalt. Still a classic! 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Fall 2018)

Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Strength Tennessee Whiskey (700ml) - 62.5%Tennessee, UNITED STATES$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 62.5%Jack Daniels with a heavyweight swagger.
Jack Daniels take the Single Barrel label one step further, bottling not at 100 proof (as is the case for the standard single barrel releases) but at a barrel strength of 62.5%. Only one out of every one hundred barrels are selected, typically sourced from the highest reaches of the rickhouse where the intense temperatures deliver the richest flavours, further accentuating those delicious vanilla, caramel and maple syrup notes. Distilled from 80% corn, 12% rye and 8% malted barley, each barrel bottling will be slightly different from the next, with outturns around 200 bottles per barrel.
Other reviews... Concord grape jelly, blackberry jam, Coca-Cola spices, leather, iced tea, tobacco barn, and maple syrup on the nose; with water, the fruitiness blooms and takes on sweet banana and marzipan. The palate is hot, with heaps of baking spice, cacao nibs, and mouthwatering oak; add some water and the rich interplay of dark fruit and velvety spices returns, along with dark chocolate-covered banana, cola, and chocolaty oak. Warming and lengthy finish. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Susannah Skiver Barton

Glenallachie 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$179. 99Bottle$2159.88 DozenABV: 46%Billy Walker's attempt to create "the essence of Speyside" is realised in this heavily sherried expression. The first batch quickly sold out in the UK. The current version features a packaging update that debuted around 2024. All the barrels were sourced from Miguel Martin. Slightly more than half were PX puncheons and butts with the remainder being ex Oloroso. There's also a small addition of 200 litre medium toast virgin oak in the mix. The result is another whisky where the appearance alone will get your appetite going, especially if you're into sherried malts. It pours a fabulous, deep polished mahogany colour and follows through with aromas of orange zest, raisin cake and fruit’n'nut dark chocolate while offering a decent attack at just 46%. Revealing more zesty freshness, gingery warmth and less of the over-the-top opulence of many recent Glenallachies, the flavour ledger tilts towards oloroso here with an almost tart, peel character competing with the PX. Dates, raisins, roasted nuts and an interesting twist of liquorice carry the aftertaste. All up, a solid sherried addition to the distillery’s ever-expanding stable that fares best after 5-10 minutes air contact. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Lashed with rich sherry aromas of baked orange, cherry, currants, chopped peel, ground cinnamon, and cocoa powder; it’s rich and intense, and pulsing with bold sherry cask character. Dark chocolate and Seville orange marmalade kick off the palate, with Nutella, black pepper, oak, cola, sultana, and some ground coffee flavors. A warming finish with dark chocolate and citrus notes. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com
[First batch tasted] The nose is fragrant, with spicy red wine, raspberries, ginger, milk chocolate, and nutmeg. Viscous on the palate, with lots of cloves, plus vanilla, raisins, and instant coffee with a slug of sherry in it. Dark chocolate, licorice, and black coffee feature in the finish. Overall, nicely balanced. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com
[circa 2019]...No silly finishes in sight, unless I’m mistaken, so we should be fine. Now they’re mentioning ‘Oloroso & PX Sherry Hogsheads & Puncheons’, I just hope that’s not just flash-flavouring. Colour: dark amber. Nose: nuts, plastics, sour fruits and vegetables, plaster, concrete, grapes, soap. In old-blogger-language, we’d call this ‘intriguing’. Mouth: better, if a little ‘forced’. You feel the finishing, the roasted nuts, the gingery and leafy flavours, all the leather, all the spices, and the nasty PX. Chestnuts, burnt raisins. Finish: long, a little burnt and sour. Comments: interesting but pretty difficult whisky made and promoted by very lovely people, at the top of their game. In other words, any pro, pro-am or am writer’s very, very, and I mean very worst nightmare. But stay tuned... 79 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the producers... NOSE: Overflowing with raisins, butterscotch and sweet spices. TASTE: The rainbow of sweet spices, raisins and butterscotch develops to banana, orange peel and dark chocolate.

Aberfeldy 12 Year Old Madeira Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 40%A step up from the standard 12 year old, this direct import Aberfeldy is selling at the same price as Duty Free! Expect a lighter style dram where the Madeira casks impart hints of honey and nuts. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... One might imagine that, at the very least, travel retail finishes would be tailored to airports. Here, for instance, Funchal, naturally, or perhaps Lisbon, Faro or… er, Porto. No, forget it… Colour: gold. Nose: a few slightly dirty touches of mustard and aged walnuts—not unpleasant, in fact—dried raisins and toasted almonds, a hint of paprika, then some earthy notes. Quite pleasant. Mouth: pepper, mustard, walnut wine, a touch of burnt caramel and bitter chocolate, with a relatively powerful attack despite the low ABV. However, it quickly becomes rather prickly on the nose and turns increasingly drying, with hints of mushroom. A pity, as the combination is interesting. Finish: rather short, heavily on the Madeira, with Worcestershire sauce at this stage. Comments: one could almost use it in cooking, perhaps in a Madeira sauce. But of course! The 40% ABV is pretty low, that’s for sure, but it’s a nice drop in the end. 80 points - whiskyfun.com

The 2021 Percarlo is every bit as stunning from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich and vivid in the glass, with striking complexity, the 2021 is a fine follow-up to the 2020. The 2021 is a bit tight relative to the 2020, but that is not a bad thing at all. If anything, I look forward to comparing these two monumental wines in a few years' time. For now, the 2021 impresses with its purity of Sangiovese fruit and mind-blowing balance. Hints of kirsch, blood orange and pomegranate linger on the vivid, exceptionally polished finish. What a wine. Drink 2028-2042.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThis is a complex and deep wine, an old-fashioned sangiovese. There are multifaceted aromas of red cherries, dried cherries, raspberries, camphor, earth and elegant dried flowers. Full-bodied and velvety, with a weighty mid-palate and integrated but tense acidity. Meaty and savory flavors coat the tannins, with a long, precise aftertaste. From organically grown grapes. Almost drinkable now, but great potential for the long haul.

James SucklingThis fresh red evokes cherry, raspberry, iron, earth and tobacco flavors. There's an impression of finesse driven by the lively acidity despite the firm tannins. Troy Kalleske reports that the 2024 growing season was near-perfect delivering average yields and superb quality fruit.
Small dollops of Petit Verdot and Viognier were included in the blend to provide added complexity and give the wine a contemporary edge. Maturation took place in a combination of approximately 20% new French, American and Hungarian oak hogsheads for 12 months.Rich, dense and luxuriously silky in its flow, this is Barossa Shiraz at its seductive best.

2021 Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico RiservaTuscany, ITALY$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)ABV: 14.5%Closure: StelvinDeep, concentrated and bright with sturdy tannins and a long, generously fruited yet rustic finish.
The 2021 vintage is considered to be one of the best vintages ever in Chianti producing wines of power and elegance. Sourced from Antinori’s Tignanello estate, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico, the wine is produced primarily from Sangiovese with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot also included in the blend. Maturation takes place in French and Hungarian oak barriques for approximately one year.
Midnight black heart with a deep dark red hue. A mix of red to black currant scents sail through the olfactory senses with some red cherry, earth, tobacco and spicy dried herb notes then ensuing. Mid weighted the palate is awash with rich red to black currant and dark cherry fruits. Notions of earth, dried herbs, dusty cedar, tobacco and spice lend further complexity. Deep, concentrated and bright it possesses a sturdy tannin structure which lends some grip onto the long, generously fruited yet rustic finish.

Impressive cherry and berry fruit with hints of cedar and dried flowers. It’s medium-bodied, firm and bright with a long, nicely tannined finish. This can age, but I like the tension and drive to this now. Baby Tignanello. Sangiovese with 10% cabernet. Drink or hold.

Wine SpectatorMarchesi Antinori General Manager Renzo Cotarella tells me that 2021 is the best vintage he has ever overseen. Ever. He prefers it to recent classics like 2016 and 2010. There was frost in the spring, and the growing cycle was very long. This is something that most grapes, and especially Sangiovese, need in order to exhibit aromatic depth and flavor complexity. "This is an exceptional year," he says, citing the inner energy certainly exhibited by the wines from 2021.
I agree, mostly, but not unequivocally. I love the precision and tension inherent to these wines, but I didn't encounter that same breathless vertical lift and linearity that I remember so well in 2016, for example. That was a vintage that managed to effortlessly balance both power and elegance, which is by no means an easy feat. To me, 2021 has the elegance but not the same piercing power that you only get in cooler vintages when sugar and phenolic ripening line up seamlessly. So, while I love these wines, especially the Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori and the outstanding Tignanello, my money is still on 2016 as the better vintage, speaking generally. But zoom in on one wine and my money is on the 2021 Tignanello over everything else.
This is one of the big surprises of this tasting and ultimately represents one of the best buys in the entire extended Marchesi Antinori portfolio. The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori shares the DNA of Tignanello. It is Sangiovese kissed with small parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Of course, the wine is more accessible and open compared to Tignanello, and spiritually, this wine is a Chianti Classico. By that I mean that the elegant minerality of these soils and the sunny flavors of its environs are the determining characteristics. You get wildflower, iris, tart fruit and plum. The wine's enhanced mineral character, with dusty white rock, is what adds lasting complexity and depth. Drink 2024-2033.

Huon Hooke - The Real Review - Glenfiddich Aston Martin F1 Team 16 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 43%
Other reviews... Apparently, this one’s the result of a tie-in with the Aston Martin Formula 1 team. Colour: deep gold. Nose: very nice, very civilised, rather on vanilla fudge and praline, apple tart, multifloral honey… It’s genuinely lovely and gentle, a bit like Aston’s position in the standings (Alonso 11th, Stroll 12th). Mouth: I find this really good, a little richer than your usual ‘fiddichs, which we do like, more malty on the palate, more on honey-baked quince, mirabelle tart, maple syrup… Finish: not so short, more on honey again but also more on cakes, scones, muffins and all that jazz. This is really good. Comments: to be honest, we do poke fun at these unlikely marketing tie-ins, but I must admit I rather like this little 16-year-old that’s got a fair bit of depth, even if we’re not quite dealing with a naturally aspirated V12 here. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

The latest single barrel of Willett available for Australia demonstrates how these whiskeys continue to appreciate. At 12 years old, it is one of the oldest to be offered by the official importer under the distillery's sought-after Family Estate label. Barrel No. 2148 yielded just 114 bottles at 60% Alc./Vol. Collectable.
Willett Family Estate releases used to be commonplace at liquor stores across America. Nowadays, they're a rare sight. Most gets purchased directly at the distillery. Australia is lucky to receive anything at all. The remarkably high standard and limited nature of official Willetts means they will be on collector's radars more than ever before. Followers of this brand know that Willett are more than a little fanatical about wood selection, so you can be sure the barrels used here have been selected by a producer at the very top of their game. The only downside is that prices have gone up in the last few years and we expect they'll continue to increase.

1998 Chateau Mouton RothschildPauillac, Bordeaux, FRANCE$1299. 00Bottle$15588.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkChateau Mouton Rothschild holds a unique place in the history of Bordeaux, being the only property to have its ranking changed since the introduction of the 1855 Classification. Originally listed as a Second Growth, through the tireless efforts of Baron Philippe Rothschild to make a wine he truly believed could match the best in the world, the property was upgraded to First Growth in June 1973. Known as the most flamboyant of the First Growth wines, Mouton Rothschild shows the rich and exotic side of Pauillac. Plantings on the 75 hectare property are a mix of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.
Other Reviews....
Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 1998 Mouton Rothschild is deep garnet-brick in color with lovely crème de cassis, dried roses, hoisin and baking spice notes with underlying notions of dried cherries and mulberries plus touches of wood smoke, incense and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied and packed with rich fruit framed by firm, chewy tannins, it is stacked with complex, evolving flavors and finishes with incredibly long-lasting perfumed notes. According to winemaker Philippe Dhalluin, this needs about three hours of decanting at this stage. I simply love the place this wine is in right now, possessing plenty of mature, tertiary characters yet still sporting bags of fruit. It won’t be fading anytime soon either and should cellar nicely for 20-25+ more years. Drink 2018-2043.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (June 2018)A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 1998 Château Mouton Rothschild comes from a vintage that saw beautiful early season weather but rain in September and October that made the vintage more complicated for the Médoc and Graves region. A more medium to full-bodied effort, it has terrific complexity in its red and black currant fruits as well as smoked tobacco, loamy earth, spice box, and chocolate. Balanced, elegant, and silky on the palate, its oak is perfectly integrated, it has fine tannins, and it’s smack in the middle of its prime drinking window.

Jeni Port – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionFrom Pat Underwood, winemaker of Little Reddie: “Patrick Underwood is a new brand, an important divergence from Little Reddie forced by personal and profession growth. After bottling the 2021 Nebbiolo I realised some things had shifted in me, so to not muddle the waters I decide a new label was needed. Little Reddie will continue to be about trying to learn by pushing things in the cellar; what would happen if a particular grape from particular place was made in a particular (unusual) way. I’ve loved this process and have learnt terrifically through it. Now, my interests, what I like to drink and where I find the most creative satisfaction, have shifted. I am far more interested in nuance, in wine referential of the canon or at a minimum working in a way that is reverent and informed by the practices of the greats”.
And with that we have Chalmers Vineyards plantings (new ones) of nebbiolo to a heap of diverse clones. Pat selected fruit as a clonal selection to make this wine. Pat of course worked with Olek Bondonio in Piedmont, so has a broader reference point for this variety.
A bright, vibrant, tannin-shaped red of crystalline texture, fine grip, dark cherry fruit, woody spices, some earthiness and a crackle of blood orange/amaro through its latter stages. A touch diffuse in terms of fruit character but structure and general sense of vitality and energy is in the spotlight. The tannin profile is very Italianate, as hoped or expected, fine and lacy to start with a building grumble of grippiness to close. Very pleasing, good DNA of the variety, a winning thing to drink. Drink 2023-2035.

This is grown on the Elsewhere vineyard, which is the oldest vineyard in Tasmania’s Huon Valley. This vineyard was established in 1982, and is dry-grown. As Rivulet’s Keira O’Brien writes, “Elsewhere Vineyard is in the deep south of Tasmania, between Huonville and Cygnet, at the edge of viticultural possibility.” Production of this wine was only 145 dozen.
I met Keira once, a lifetime ago. Her journey since has been a river with many twists and turns, all of them remarkable or – to use her more exquisite word – a rivulet. Whatever word you use, Keira O’Brien is the real deal. She never makes a bad wine. From afar at least she comes across as the perfect combination of grace, determination, hard work and talent.
This wine is gold for Australia. It’s a humdinger, hands down, it’s beautiful. It’s awash with citrus, peach, pear, ginger and nougat, and has crushed fennel and sugared rose petals as highlights. It’s a crescendo wrapped in deliciousness, already, but it’s also clear that it’s still building and that it still has more to give. This is a wine of line, length and composure but the sparks are flying too. X factor. X marks the spot. This wine is all of the above. Drink 2027-2032+

Crunchy green apple and lime fruits drive the palate with infusions of fresh herbs, citrus and slatey mineral elements highlighted across the back half. Excellent intensity with crisp acidity and a long zingy finish.
Drink over the next year.

Pretty formidable in flavour power, this is dialled-up fiano that speaks true to the variety, albeit amplified. Slightly waxy and glossy, with white florals and muskmelon, it arrives via slow waves before picking up the pace with racy acidity, grapefruit pith, lime sherbet and underripe pear. A slight pull of phenolics resets the palate for the next sip. Drink by 2028.

Villa Antinori Bianco is a historic wine from the Antinori family, first produced by Niccolò Antinori in 1931. The label and production philosophy, focused on representing the wine's origin, have remained largely unchanged. The grapes are destemmed, delicately pressed, and the must is fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks until bottling.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge to the edges and a watery hue. Delightful pear and red apple scents sail through the nostrils followed by some lime, subtle quince and wet stone notes. Scrumptious pear, red apple and lime fruits are delivered with plenty of intensity over a back drop of fresh herb infusions and wet stone. River stone like mouth feel and a dry finish of ample length that’s quite moreish.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

2005 Chateau Leoville Las Cases Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCEReduced from $950.00$875. 00Bottle$10500.00 DozenClosure: CorkChateau Leoville Las Cases is one of the larger classified estates in Bordeaux, with the Second Growth Saint-Julien property totalling 98 hectares. Winemaking is very traditional, using old oak vats for fermentation, and up to 90% new French oak for maturation. While the wines can look rather austere in their youth, from great years they can resemble some of the finest First Growth wines as they reach maturity. The Chateau also produces a second wine, Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases (from 2009), which is not to be confused with Clos du Marquis, a wine that is always produced from a separate parcel and is considered a standalone brand.
"...the 2005 Château Leoville Las Cases is nevertheless jaw dropping good, and certainly a perfect wine in this reviewer’s opinion." - Jeb Dunnuck
Other Reviews....
The 2005 Léoville Las Cases is a classic that numbers among the wines of the vintage in the Médoc. Wafting from the glass with notes of dark berries, cassis, incense, burning embers, sweet soil tones, dark chocolate and cigar wrapper, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a vibrant core of fruit, lively acids and sweet, powdery tannins. More elegant and refined than the hulking, uncompromising 2006, the 2005 is nevertheless a powerful, tightly wound wine that will reward further bottle age, even if it's actually quite expressive today. Drink 2025-2065.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Aug 2022)The 2005 Léoville Las-Cases retains a deep colour at 20 years of age, with little aging on the rim. The bouquet leaves you instantly besotted with blackberry, wild hedgerow, black truffle, incense and light lavender scents in the background. The nose is very complex and one of the most vivacious that I encountered revisiting this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins that frame mineral-rich black fruit, as well as touches of smoke and meat juices in the background. This is very harmonious but has genuine weight and depth on the finish, elevating this to one of the best Left Bank 2005s. Superb. Tasted at the château. Drink 2025-2050.

Neal Martin - Vinous (June 2025)A stunningly complex and complete nose of flowers, dark fruits, and minerals. Very perfumed and subtle at the same time. The palate is full, yet tight and powerful with perfect tannins and a long, long finish. The quality of the tannins is phenomenal, please leave this alone for ten years. Pull the cork in 2020.

James Suckling (June 2011)Still inky hued and not yet in its prime, the 2005 Château Leoville Las Cases is nevertheless jaw dropping good, and certainly a perfect wine in this reviewer’s opinion. Cassis, ripe currants, leather, graphite, crushed stone, and smoke all define the aromatics, and it has a massive, full-bodied profile on the palate as well as the more focused, regal style of the Chateau. There’s no shortage of tannins, it has incredible purity, integrated acidity, and a monster of a finish. It actually has a touch of Latour-like character, and it needs another 4-6 years, if not a decade, to hit prime time, and will have 30 years of longevity. The 2005 is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, representing only 37% of the total production. Drink 2028-2058.

Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2024)To some, this is the best wine estate in St-Julien. Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the three Léovilles and is the largest at 97 hectares. Though the wine is a 2ème Cru Classé, or second growth, many see this old estate rivalling the first growths and have prices to match. I've been lucky enough to taste this a few times this year, and the last one (at a Christie's dinner in early November) confirmed once again what an incredible wine this is. With a full 87% cabernet sauvignon, and the rest made up of merlot and cabernet franc, the colour here is rich ecclesiastical purple, and the fruit still tight and brooding, although it starts to soften up with a good carafing even now. It's the texture of Léoville Las Cases that often hits you, and the confidence of a wine that knows it has years ahead of it. Dark fruits, bitter chocolate, black truffles, all perfectly in place. One to savour.

Jane Anson - DecanterThis is a super wine, that in time, should go up in score. But patience is needed here. Decanted 4 hours, that was not enough to tame the strict tannins. Still, it was impossible not to enjoy the perfectly ripe, regal, red and black fruits, intensity, length and concentration found here. This is was the older British writers called good breed. I get their point, even if the term is archaic. All that being said, perhaps, this will be ready between 2025-2030 for the start of its long, 100 year life.

One vintage that was missing from my extensive vertical earlier this year was the 2001 Léoville Las Cases, and when curiosity got the better of me, I opened a bottle from my own cellar. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, cigar wrapper, pencil shavings and classy new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered core of vibrant fruit, ripe structuring tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Youthful and a little aloof, it's a classic Las Cases that is just at the very beginning of a long drinking window. It would be fascinating to compare the 2001 directly with the much-lauded 2000, as the two are very close in quality to my palate. Drink 2025-2065.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Dec 2023)The 2001 Léoville Las Cases is simply stunning. I was fully prepared to decant it given that Las Cases is almost always a brute in its youth. And make no mistake about it, a twenty year-old Las Cases is still a youngster. Quite frankly, I am not at all prepared for the sheer intensity and richness that emanates from the glass. No decanting needed. The 2001 is simply magnificent upon opening. A rush of generous inky blackberry jam, spice, graphite and leather conveys superb textural intensity. Time in the glass helps the aromatics come alive. Shockingly rich and voluptuous, the 2001 is also wonderfully open today. Uncharacteristically so for Las Cases, in fact. But who’s complaining? Certainly not me.
Even so, the 2001 is ultimately a mid-weight Las Cases, with plenty of opulent fruit, but not quite the tannic heft that is such a signature of this reference-point St. Julien. Readers lucky enough to own the 2001 are in for a real treat. This is an especially fine bottle, perhaps the finest I have come across. Aside from all the technical analyses and descriptors, what really matters most is that the 2001 is a wine that delivers immense drinking pleasure. I absolutely loved it. Drink 2021-2051.

Antonio Galloni - Vinous (Aug 2021)A very typical Las Cases with a Pauillac note, even though it’s St.-Julien. Lead pencil, dried herb, currant and black olive. Medium-to full-bodied, firm and creamy with a long finish. It’s very persistent. Pretty austerity. Be sure to decant this a couple of hours in advance. Drink or hold.

James Suckling (Jan 2021)Coming from an underrated vintage in Bordeaux, the 2001 Château Léoville Las Cases is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, and 12% Cabernet Franc that hit 13% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.7 and an IPT of 70. This was a milder, cooler year, and the 2001 offers a more complex, mature bouquet of cedary herbs, menthol, tobacco, lead pencils, and dried flowers, with a wonderful core of sweet red and black fruits. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a wonderful mid-palate, sweet tannins, and a great finish. It's drinking at point today yet certainly has another 10-15 years of prime drinking. Drink 2021-2036.

Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)Pencil lead, leather, smoked cedar and reserved but carefully sculpted cassis and bilberry fruit - this is Léoville-Las Cases showing its classicism in a vintage that is the home of balanced, nuanced and elegant wines. It continues to open and gather depth over 15 minutes in the glass, suggesting there is plenty of potential ahead, but the tannins have now softened and integrated into the overall structure. Grip and freshness runs right through the palate, and a Cabernet-dominated savouriness makes you salivate through the finish. Plenty of power at 21 years old. Beautiful dark fruits, a successful reflection of a vintage that still has plenty to offer. Drink 2021-2044.

"An uncompromising classic" - William Kelley, Wine Advocate
Other Reviews....
The 2000 Léoville Las Cases takes time to unwind in the decanter and glass, but when it begins to show all its cards, the display is spectacular. Mingling aromas of dark berries and red fruits with aromas of pencil shavings, loamy soil, cedar box, bitter chocolate, dried rose petals and licorice, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered, complete mid-palate that's rare in this vintage, powdery tannins and a long, resonant finish. An uncompromising classic, even as it closes in on its 22nd birthday, the 2000 Las Cases remains an infant in terms of evolution. Drink 2025-2055.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Aug 2022)The 2000 Léoville Las Cases is a vintage that I have encountered a dozen or so times. Jean-Hubert Délon oversaw a magnificent wine in this year. The nose of graphite-infused black fruit is still vivacious and very complex, very Pauillac-like, and supremely well focused. Hints of licorice develop with aeration. The medium-bodied palate features sappy black fruit and perfectly judged acidity. Complex and delineated, with marine-tinged mulberry and black currant notes given a deft Oriental touch on the finish. Bottles are only just beginning to drink perfectly now and will last another 30 or more years. Drink 2021-2050.

James Suckling (June 2011)The 2000 Leoville Las Cases is another brilliant wine and, like most 2000s, appears to just now be at the early stages of its drink window. Smoky black fruits, crushed rocks, lead pencil, and menthol notes all emerge from this brilliant, blockbuster beauty that still tastes like it's just 5-6 years old. Beautifully concentrated, ripe, sexy, and seamless, it has the classic elegance and regal quality of this domaine front and center. It has another 3-4 decades of longevity. Drink 2019-2049.

Jeb Dunnuck (June 2019)Now closing in on two decades, this is starting to soften and open, bringing exotic spices to the fore. The inky colour translates into tight black fruits with liquorice, cigar box, graphite and grilled gunsmoke. It’s still a little fierce in its tannic structure, and will need a few more years to be truly welcoming, but it’s clear that the grapes reached full phenolic ripeness. The invariably low pH at Leoville, often below 3.5 (as it is here), explains its iron grip. I last tasted this in October 2017 and it has barely budged an inch since then, but it gets significantly better after an hour in the glass (and being double decanted), giving you an idea of just how much life remains ahead. Harvest 28 September to 11 October. Drink 2019-2050.

2005 Chateau Lafite Rothschild Pre-Arrival OfferPauillac, Bordeaux, FRANCEReduced from $2,299.00$1999. 00Bottle$23988.00 DozenClosure: CorkOften seen as the most elegant of the First Growth wines, Chateau Lafite Rothschild has long been considered one of the greatest wines from not only Bordeaux, but from anywhere in the world. Prices too reflect its status as the most collectable wine in Bordeaux, spurred on since 2008 when it ruled the Chinese fine wine market. While the vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, each year the proportions vary according to the vintage, normally with Cabernet Sauvignon accounting for 80-90% of the blend.
"A wine worthy of superlatives... Near perfection." - Charles Curtis MW, Decanter
Other Reviews....
The 2005 Lafite-Rothschild is a gorgeous wine, but it is also very young. Readers lucky enough to own it will find a very classic, gracious Lafite-Rothschild that still needs a few years to be at its best. Bright red-toned fruit, crushed rocks, mint and licorice open first, followed by darker aromas and flavors that develop as the wine gains volume with air. Tasted next to its peers, Lafite is so typical of itself and less marked by the year. And that is one of the signs of a truly great terroir. Lafite-Rothschild is not as showy as many other wines in this vintage, but it is so true to its own identity, and that is the highest compliment I can pay it. The 2005 is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, done in 100% new oak, which is not at all noticeable. At the time, the Cabernet percentage was quite high, but that has now become the norm. Tasted two times. Drink 2025-2055.

James Suckling (Feb 2011)The 2005 Château Lafite-Rothschild is a beauty, and it has that quintessential power paired with incredible elegance and complexity that this Château does so well. Based on 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot, it has perfumed notes of red and black fruits, freshly sharpened pencils, saddle leather, graphite, and spice. These all carry to a medium to full-bodied 2005 that has a layered, balanced mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It stays relatively focused and tight on the palate, and benefits from air. Drink bottles any time over the coming 20-30 years. Drink 2024-2054.

Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2024)A wine worthy of superlatives, the 2005 Lafite showed incredible concentration yet a superb balance. The lovely blackcurrant and plum fruit shows a fragrant floral edge, hints of oak spice, and a firm, earthy underpinning. The texture is superbly elegant, with a lovely freshness and a lilting, silky finish, yet it does not lack a tannic grip, and the finish is satisfyingly long. Near perfection. A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot with just a drop of Petit Verdot, aged in new casks. Drink 2021-2040.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Jun 2021)Youthful, classically styled, full-bodied, fresh, bright, crisp, chewy, and tannic, the red fruits offer purity, vibrance, and length, along with lead pencil, flowers, spice, cigar box, thyme, and oceanic characteristics.
