This is also aromatically quite floral in character with its blend of purple fruit, earth and anise wisps. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the delineated and powerful larger-bodied flavors where the supporting tannins are dense but fine on the balanced and youthfully austere finale. This offers fine development potential and is a wine that will need at least some patience. Drink through 2032+.

    Allen Meadows - Burghound

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from two parcels, the one towards the top of the parcel providing the 70% whole bunch. The nose is fresh, taut and quite mineral-driven with black cherries, raspberry and light rose petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine tension, quite poised with a bit of sinew towards the finish. It will require 4-6 years in bottle just to shave those edges, but I appreciate here the spicy aftertaste. Drink 2026-2048.

    Neal Martin - Vinous

50% whole bunch: one vat destemmed and one, with the old vine fruit, entirely whole bunch. Medium deep purple. Brisk fresh red fruit. As often at this domaine, the wine starts quietly then builds in intensity, really kicking on without changing out of the red fruit register. Substantial.

    Reduced from $129.99
    $119. 99

    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45.8%

Launched in mid 2022, 'Surge' is another duty free Talisker delivering spice and honeyed red-fruits alongside the distillery's trademark salt'n'pepper and smoke. It's a no age statement expression, aged in ex-bourbon casks, but the decent ABV means you should get good intensity. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Talisker at its most eloquent: the smoke shows all the charm of the distillery in its younger development... a delightful combination of charm and determined brutality. Shame about the thinness and lack of development; But what it does, it does juicily and memorably. 92.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

    ABV: 48%

Other reviews... This is the proper new Balvenie 25, not one of those doublewoods or single barrels, you understand? Colour: gold. Nose: fully Balvenie. Touch of nail polish at first, then mirabelles and quinces, then croissant and brioche, then custard and acacia honey. That's all folks, and that was very much already. Mouth: absolutely splendid, perhaps a tad rougher than earlier vintages (the glorious 1970s) but indeed full of plums, yellow ones, green ones… Quinces are there too, sugarcane as well, tiny notes of Victoria pineapple, then just vanilla and the best part of oak. It is not a very complicated malt whisky, it's even a tad simple, but I find it epitomically Balvenie, which is enough for me. I must be on my lucky day. Finish: lovely finish, creamy, ueber-Balvenie-ish, on preserved mirabelles with just a dash of sawdust. Vanilla and barley syrup in the aftertaste. Comments: close to the core. My main problem is that I cannot not remember the early 1970s Balvenies – and the ones before. Balvenie 'As we get it' anyone? Maybe I need some kind of reset. 88 points - whiskyfun.com

Totally opaque dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Elevated ripe dark plum and liquorice aromas intermix with scorched earth, vanillin cedar and blackpepper. Rich peppery dark plum and liquorice fruits have a toasty vanillin oak, leather and earth back drop. A sturdy tannin structure lends a hint of firmness to the otherwise generous, fleshy textured finish.

Made from Viura grapes. Brilliant very pale straw almost water like core with a distinct greenish tinge around the edges. Elevated lime and green apple aromas infused with fresh herbs mix with hints of lemon and slatey mineral notes. Zesty lime, green apple and lemon fruits are underscored by crunchy saline infused acidity. Finishes dry with good tension. Some attractive slatey mineral and oyster shell elements linger on the long invigorating aftertaste.

    2021 Te Mata Estate Coleraine
    Hawkes Bay, NEW ZEALAND
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Dubbed as "New Zealand’s greatest winery" by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and "New Zealand's first growth" by Decanter (amongst many other superlatives), Te Mata is a family-owned Estate in Hawke's Bay, on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Established in 1896 on a former pastoral land-holding, the Estate has been producing classic wines modelled on Bordeaux varieties and blends with a modern interpretation.
Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyards on the Havelock Hills. Each parcel of grapes was destemmed before a warm-plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then matured in predominantly new French oak barrels for 17 months. The final blend is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc.

    Other Reviews....
The 2021 Coleraine is a superstar. It's the best I recall seeing on release in recent years, a total "pleasure-dome" situation. Tea tree, oyster shell, lavender, black tea and tobacco leaf burst from the glass. Seamless, polished tannins grace the palate. There is texturally more silk to the tannins here than the Awatea tasted beside this (another great wine, for what it's worth). There are notes of creamy red fruits, cassis and bramble, Asian five spice, black cherry and graphite/mineral skein. The persistence of flavor here is extraordinary; it's detailed and nuanced but insistent in the mouth. The tannins cup the fruit in the mouth. Winemaker Phil Brodie said there are no enzymes or added tannin; it's all from the vineyard. This is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. 2021 was left in barrel a little longer than the 2020 to refine the tannins. Drink 2023 - 2043.

Erin Larkin - Wine Advocate (Sep 22, 2023)

56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc. Because I care, I just nipped down to the cellar to open a bottle of the 2020 Coleraine to compare and contrast with the 2021. The 2020 is packed with tannin, texture, earthiness, and power, while the 2021 is brighter, a bit more frisky in acidity, with more leafy perfume. A little more flamboyant, but equal. It’s not a competition, more of a love in. The 2021 may well be the ‘better’ wine in time, though it’s kind of hard to tell, and may just come down to personal preference. Release date for this in Australia is February 2023.
Dark and intense, lots of perfume, red and black fruits, tobacco, a leafy pop that’s pure varietal class, creamy oak, lead pencils, aniseed and spice. Medium to full-bodied, a flood of flavour, super ‘mineral’ feel to the acidity, tannin is superb, and the finish is so long. Light but so dense. There’s a fresh raspberry juiciness here too, and an extra dimension of tension and energy. All the graphite and presence. Incredible wine. Drink: 2026 - 2045+.

Redcurrant and creme de cassis aromas. Roses. So aromatic. Stones. Oyster and mussel shell. Ink pot. Lead pencil shavings. Full-bodied but very tight and focused. Linear and long with fine, powdery and chewy tannins. Crushed velvet texture. 56% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot, and 12% cabernet franc. More franc than normal in the blend. Terrific length. Try after 2028.

    James Suckling

The 2021 Coleraine exhibits a commanding presence and majestic poise. The bouquet reveals classic aromas of cassis, dark plum and violet with whispering nuances of cedar and cigar. There are hints of warm spices, compounding the pleasure upon inhalation. The palate is bold and graceful at once, enhanced by plush texture and multi-layered mouthfeel, beautifully framed by refreshing acidity and fine chalky tannins. Robust and substantial with a great line and length, which seem to go on to infinity. This youthful wine is already impossible to resist, but time will reward those who can wait. In sports, they often talk about ‘The Greatest of All Time’, or ‘The GOAT’.

Friuli is situated high up in the north of Italy along the border with Slovenia, and is one of the most exciting and adventurous regions for wine production. ‘Vini macerati di Friuli’, the macerated wines of Friuli, are made using extended contact on skins which are essentially white wines made like red wine. This ancient process was made new again and brought back into vogue in the late 90s by Josko Gravner (and others) who began searching for ways to make wines of the region more individual. Many of the local varieties such as Ribolla Gialla respond extremely well to extended skin contact, unleashing layers of texture and phenolic richness, along with their signature amber/orange colour.

Il Carpino sits on Friuli Venezia-Giulia’s winemaking ‘Golden Strip’ alongside their closest neighbours, Gravner and Radikon. Today they farm 40 acres of vineyards planted on calcareous sandstone-rich soil famous in the region for fine wine production. Il Carpino are located at a higher altitude than most in the region, and their wines embody the energy and fragrance this positioning grants them. Their flagship wine is their Ribolla Gialla which spends 60 days on skins before being racked off into large Slavonian botti for 2 years, with an additional 2 years in bottle before it hits the market.

Bright straw colour with amber tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted spicy ripe pear, dried apple and honeycomb like notes are trailed by notions of quince and almond. Texturally full the palate features a mix of ripe pear, blood orange and honeycomb flavours which overlay a spicy almond back drop. Finishes very dry with tangy acidity and a well rounded, lingering spicy almond aftertaste.

Kilchoman Casado 2022 Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $159. 99

    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

'Casado' meaning marriage in Portuguese is another in a growing line of limited-editions and quasi-experimental bottlings from Kilchoman. Matured in fresh bourbon barrels for six years before 38 casks were selected and married together for an additional two years in two 6,000 litre Portuguese red wine vats. Notes from the producers... Aromas of intense campfire smoke, ripe plums, cherries, peaches, marzipan and sea spray fill the nose, complemented by notes of black pepper, salty peat smoke, apricot, lemon, stewed plums, apricot jam and rich smoke throughout the palate and lingering in the finish.

Stauning El Clasico Danish Rye Whisky (700ml)
    DENMARK
    $144. 99
    Bottle
    $1739.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.3%

Described as "a Nordic whisky demon with Iberian blood flowing through its veins", Stauning's El Clasico Rye sees additional time in x-vermouth casks. The unusual nose presents muted prune and dried peel aromas with burgeoning rye richness; Harder to pin down on the palate, falling somewhere close to a drier style malted rye, then slightly nondescript through the middle stages before developing cinnamon, bitter peel and herbal definition as the vermouth rallies. Ends warming, dry and palate cleansing. Obvious Manhattan potential - which is no doubt what the creators had in mind. 46.3% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This vermouth-finished rye whisky is intriguing, complex, and distinctive, with aromas of deep pepper-spice notes of clove and ginger, baked orange peel, stewed fruits, and a gratifying tang of bitter fruit skins and herbal stalks. Mouth-drawing fruitiness with cherry-flavored gummy bears, sweet chalky candies, strawberry taffy, and a piercing streak of spice followed by cinnamon and the return of bitter herbs. Drink it neat or enliven your Boulevardier game. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Stauning KAOS Triple Malt Danish Whisky (700ml)
    DENMARK
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Curiously named after a 1930s Danish political slogan, Kaos is a combination of Stauning's unpeated malt, smoked malt and malted rye whiskies. The aromas are sweetish with suggestions of poached fruits and dark rye over a rich coffee-chocolate-malt background. A full bodied, chewy delivery conjures flavours of dried fruits, toasty rye bread and cocoa followed by fresh oak shavings and wood spices - you might also detect some faint wood smoke in the aftertaste. A bit of everything going on here, with the toast and chocolate keynotes recalling Glenmorangie Signet. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Give it time to open up and reveal its full beauty: coffee bean, plain chocolate chunks, a warming twist of sweet peat smoke, wood spices, apple, and fresh breakfast pastries. Green apple flavors, rocked by a pandemonium of spices, dissipate to sugary caramel, vanilla, chocolate, and malt permeated by mellow smoke. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...The thing about Kaos, is that you never quite know - as the name implies - what you are going to get. Sometimes it works magnificently. Other times it stumbles over itself. 86 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

...With such a name, this baby couldn't not have piqued my curiosity. This little chaotic whisky is a self-blend of Stauning's rye with their peated malt and was aged in first fill bourbon and virgin American oak. Aye, we're ready… Colour: light gold. Nose: a lot of fun, with smoked mangos, litres of chamomile tea, eucalyptus, cough syrup, rye bread, a saucerful of muesli (not secrets), then rather liquorice and even a little tar. No dissonances this far, we're good. Very moderate vanillaness, we're even better. Mouth: very good, pretty bombastic, with huge fruits (melons, apricots, mangos) and this bready smoke that's not seen everywhere. Touches of juniper and caraway, a little nutmeg, then fruit breads and even a little sourdough bread. We call that süweck here in Alsace. Finish: rather long and more on liquorice. Lightly salted liquorice. Comments: a joyful whisky that's both very excellent, innovative (for once, when some whiskymakers innovate they do not have exactly the same innovations as everybody else), and just fun. Recommended if the price is right. No we don't check prices. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

Egon Müller exists at a rare level of fame and respect in the world of wine, widely considered one of the finest producers who is at the pinnacle of quality. Where the likes of Domaine de la Romanee Conti sit at this level in Burgundy, so too Egon Müller in Germany. This is reflected not only with their unrivalled track record of excellence, but also with the prices paid for rare Egon Müller bottles at auction, including some of the most expensive white wines ever sold. Egon Müller is also the sole German member of the Primum Familiae Vini (First Families of Wine) whose other members include owners of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Haut Brion, Vega Sicilia, Pol Roger, Antinori and Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia).

    Other Reviews....
The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett is a barely fruity-styled wine with a bright white-yellow color and a stunningly pure nose of white peach, citrusy fruits, white flowers, smoke, and a subtle dash of whipped cream. The wine proves stunningly vibrant on the almost off-dry tasting palate and leaves great notes of fresh herbs and spices in the long finish. The aftertaste is to die for as it proves airy, elegant, precise, and incredibly persistent. What a great success! The only downside is that one will need to be a bit patient and give the wine a few years in the bottle in order to allow it to integrate the touch of tartness currently floating around. Drink 2029-2041.

The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese is a sweet wine with an absolutely stunning nose made of cassis, a hint of pineapple, ginger, whipped cream, minty herbs, and smoky elements. The finish seems endless, intense, and yet so incredibly airy and subtle despite a not shy presence of (juicy) acidity. Spätlese does not get better than this. Drink 2036-2061.

The floral aromas are like walking into a top florist’s store. Also Asian pear, Yamanashi white peach and fresh pineapple aromas. Stunning concentration and brilliance on the super-focused palate, enormous mineral energy and freshness driving the breathtaking succulent finish. Doesn’t want to stop. Drink or hold.

The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese is a sweet wine made from botrytized fruit. It proves still rather reduced and needs a few minutes in the glass to reveal a stunningly clean nose of fresh orchard fruits, a hint of pineapple, and glorious notes of minty herbs and spices. The wine is still a touch firm on the zingy and incredibly playful palate and leaves a stunning note of fresh fruits and proves full of finesse. The combination of intensity, precision, and utter zesty-fruity balance is simply to die for. This is clearly a modern-day classic in the making. Drink 2036-2061.

This smells like the most beautiful white peach you can imagine; the kind of fruit that’s almost impossible to buy. Very pure and vibrant in spite of the lush fruit, the racy acidity giving this a stunning crystalline clarity and tremendous length. Made from 100% botrytized fruit. Limited production. The 2021er Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese is a sweet wine with a beautiful nose made of orchard fruits, cassis, floral elements, bergamot, chalk, and smoke. The wine is beautifully filigreed and elegant on the palate. A subtle touch of whipped cream adds some depth and silkiness to the overall focused and zesty experience. The finish is really to die for as it is both creamy and hugely zest, as one would expect from a high end Spätlese. Drink 2031-2061.

Here too noticeable wood sets off the spicier still and even more floral-suffused aromas that are also comprised mostly of red and blue pinot fruit. The tender, round and delicious broad-shouldered flavors brim with dry extract on the even more persistent and beautifully well-balanced finale despite a hint of warmth. As is usually the case, the positively gorgeous 2020 Rodin is more refined than the regular cuvée though it is slightly more structured as well. If you can find it, don't pass it up. Drink: 2038+.

Domaine Faiveley was founded in 1825, and while they have been known for producing outstanding quality wines throughout this time, they are widely considered one of the most improved domaines in Burgundy over the last decade. Since taking over from his father Francois, Erwan Faiveley has made a deliberate decision to emphasise freshness and purity of fruit rather than fruit extraction, and at times, excessive use of new oak. This change has resulted in wines with greater refinement and vineyard character expression.

Noticeable wood is present on the super-spicy and floral nose of layered red and blue pinot fruit aromas. The mouthfeel of the large-scaled flavors is positively gorgeous with excellent richness, indeed opulence, that contrasts with the youthfully austere, complex and hugely long finish where a touch of warmth slowly emerges. This is also seriously impressive. Drink through 2037+.

The 2020 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is brilliant, unwinding in the glass with aromas of wild berries and cherries mingled with dark chocolate, sweet spices, peonies and grilled squab. The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a very delineated, quite floral bouquet with rose petal infusing the mixture of red and black fruit. There is a touch of sous-bois that become accentuated with time. The palate is fleshy and almost confit-like on the entry, but the acidity keeps this on an even keel. Plush, luxuriant...almost sexy (I dislike the word apropos Burgundy) but there is something very sensual about this wine. Very long in terms of length. Superb. Drink 2027-2055.

A fine even and fairly deep purple. The bouquet starts quietly but then opens out in a very floral style. Pretty dancing fruit, seems light on its feet but there is certainly body behind, and a little more ripeness but still harnessed. A long and dancing finish too.

A cool, restrained and airy nose features notes of mineral reduction, smoked green apple and pretty floral wisps. The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is well-defined on the nose with apple blossom, hazelnut and light white chocolate scents. Pale lemon colour, a little waxiness, a touch of oak, not so many stones. Then a quiet patch, then the real wine comes out behind with a little lime juice. It is a bit disjointed at this stage in its elevage. This normally turns into a first rate wine, but it is not showing its full potential on today’s form.

Here the equally layered nose is a bit more expressive with its aromas of white orchard fruit, abundant citrus and discreet wood influence. The slightly bigger flavors also possess an exceptionally refined, sleek and encompassing texture while displaying focused power on the complex, sappy and balanced finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. The 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with aromas of ripe orchard fruit, hazelnuts, freshly baked bread, baking spices and buttered toast. Full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's generous and giving, with lively acids and plenty of mid-palate weight. As I've written before about this cuvée, if it can pick up some additional tension during a second winter on the lees, my score will seem conservative.

Bright clean pale yellow. Immediately there is more weight of fruit compared to the Faiveley 2020 Bienvenues-Bâtard, more power in a good way here. Here too the nose is cool and restrained with a discreet application of wood framing the layered aromas of honeysuckle, white peach and a variety of floral nuances. Aromas of hazelnuts, pear, confit citrus, honeycomb, toasted almonds and fresh bread introduce the 2020 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, rich and muscular wine that's layered and concentrated, girdled by bright acids and concluding with a long, saline finish.

The 2020 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet with yellow flowers and mirabelle, dried pineapple, lemon thyme and a touch of almond. Elijah Craig Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey (700ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 47%

    Number 7 in Whisky Advocate's Top 20 for 2020.

Launched by Heaven Hill in the USA in early 2020, Elijah Craig Rye is made with a traditional mash bill of 51% rye, 35% corn and 14% malted barley. It's the same 'barely legal' recipe they use for whiskeys like Pikesville and Rittenhouse Rye, so called because it contains the bare minimum amount of rye required by law. Because the dominant secondary grain is corn, the flavour profile is reported to be quite similar to what might be expected from a Bourbon - which hooks into rye's popular resurgence. Hardcore Bourbon drinkers are being won over by whiskeys like this. Extra-aging remains a tenet of the Elijah Craig portfolio, and this is no exception. Expect a spicy sharpness from the rye balanced by sweetness from the corn. Llike the rest of the range, it comes packaged in the brand's iconic bottle shape. 47% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Elijah Craig always impresses with value, but until now has been confined to bourbon. This foray into rye whiskey sticks close to Elijah Craig's bourbon roots by using only the minimum-required 51% rye in its formulation; however, it does achieve a nice departure in flavor. Aromas include butterscotch, caramel-nut clusters, and peppery spice. The spice ramps up on the palate, carried forward by the full body, hearty proof, and mouth-coating texture, as cherry cola, baking chocolate, and darker fruits emerge. Priced a notch below comparable peers, this rye delivers powerful flavors that feel excitingly untamed, and will impress bourbon and rye lovers alike. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Superbly made. And as relaxed yet beautifully busy as ol' Earl Scruggs on his banjo. And just as note perfect. 94.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.

...Elijah Craig Rye's combination of a flavor profile with mass appeal, great price, and recognizable branding makes it a contender for becoming one of the most popular ryes on the market. Many people are already familiar with the Elijah Craig brand, so it makes perfect sense that Heaven Hill would introduce a rye to sit beside its popular Small Batch Bourbon counterpart. Put simply, Elijah Craig Rye is light and approachable, but it also lacks complexity and oak influence which I think will make it come across as somewhat boring to seasoned rye drinkers. While it may not wow anyone with its mild intensity of flavors, its approachability, recognizable branding, and ultimately its price point, will serve it well. - breakingbourbon.com

Reportedly one of the better Pulteneys of recent times, with some tasters describing it as a new favourite that's as good as - or even better - than the long lost 17 year old. Having been aged in both x-Bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry-seasoned Spanish oak casks, you can expect a nicely balanced, slightly sweet, fruity Highlander with a little Christmas cake richness. The colour is spectacular! Normally exclusive to Travel Retail, there are no guarantees we'll be able to source this again. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... There, a proper strength and some high hopes. Colour: gold. Nose: wait, this is something else. Green cigars, as they have in Indonesia, patchouli and mothballs, mushrooms and mosses, lamp oil and bone marrow, tincture of iodine and creosote, watermelon skin, fumes, plaster, sorrel… It’s pretty unconventional and full of character, I have to say I’m really fond of this unusual nose. Forgot to mention a little mustard and manzanilla. I agree, even better news. Mouth: seriously? Caraway and aniseed upfront? Then maize flour and miso? There is a fermentary side to this one, some sake-like notes, not really easy to enjoy, but there’s also a citrusy-hoppy development that just works. The good news is that it’s the latter that wins it. A funny, rather cinematic dram. Finish: long, greener, spicier. Bitterer herbs, leaves, peppers… Comments: good fun to be had with this one, it’s just that its rather a fighter and that you’ll need a few months to empty a bottle. Unless it’s the only bottle you own, naturally. Now I like it that they would go towards character and individuality, and not towards… stupid vanilla. Very good, Inver House. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Super-dense and packed with flavour but with real verve and brightness. Sutton Grange's location in the granite foothills of Mount Alexander is evident here. Granite provides mineral lift and natural balance, which makes an ideal background for a medium-bodied, black/blue-fruited young syrah. A dash of spice, a hint of cedary oak backed by fine chocolatey tannins rounds this charmer out very well. Drink by 2030.

A blend of Cinsault, Syrah and Grenache. Translucent pale pink in colour. Fragrant raspberry, peach and strawberry scents blossom from the glass followed by some musk and subtle wet stone notes. Delicious peach and raspberry fruits have a supple textural feel with notions of strawberry and wet stone lying underneath. Finishes dry with a subtle tangy feel to the acidity and a mouth watering aftertaste.

After many years of ownership by Champagne Taittinger, Bouvet Ladubay is once again fully owned by the Monmousseau family who have continuously run the business since their purchase in 1932. Bouvet Ladubay employs precisely the same wine making process as Grand Marque Champagne, delivering French sophistication at an everyday price. The grapes for the Bouvet 'Blanc' Methode Traditionnelle are Chenin Blanc, which had been grown in the Loire Valley prior to the Roman conquest of France. Bouvet source their grapes from 120 properties around Saumur - spread over an area of 15 x 30 kilometres. The notion of using such a diversity of vineyard sites is to provide complexity to the base wines. Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley employ a similar process. These 120 micro climates each provide the blender with base material that when blended together will create the sensation of considerable complexity. The art of blending is critical and at Bouvet the third generation of blenders from the same family are in charge - in fact they have been creating the blend for the last 60 years.
Produced from predominately Chenin Blanc grapes with the addition of some Chardonnay. An exuberant mousse dissipates to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges and a fine persistent bead flowing through it. Lifted ripe pear and red apple scents are followed by some quince and yeasty brioche like notes. Nicely rounded and full in the mouth the palate features pear and apple fruits over brioche and yeast lees characters. Finishes dry with lively acidity and a dash of quince. Concludes gently creamy and very flavoursome.

From a vintage that was especially favorable to this varietal, the 2021 Dolcetto d'Alba shows a firm and solid quality of fruit with rich, juicy flavors of blackberry and sweet cherry. Maria Teresa Mascarello explains that Dolcetto is a very delicate grape that is extremely vintage-sensitive. It needs healthy conditions and steep diurnal temperature shifts, otherwise the berries are compromised. Unfortunately, acreage to Dolcetto is rapidly declining, she explains, because vintners prefer to plant more lucrative Nebbiolo and Barbera instead. Drink 2023-2027.

The 2021 Dolcetto d'Alba is rich, deep and wonderfully expressive. A burst of dark cherry/plum, lavender and spice lends notable richness. In 2021 the Dolcetto marries sumptuous fruit with a total sense of classicism that is so appealing. The 2021 is a super-Dolcetto. Don't miss it! Drink 2022-2031.

This is a superbly delicate and carefully finessed wine that interprets the growing season with its alternating cold and hot intervals in an impeccable manner. The Bartolo Mascarello 2018 Barolo puts Nebbiolo and the vintage seamlessly together like lock and key. It opens to a beautiful drinking experience. The bouquet shows detail and finely tuned aromas of redcurrant, violet, rusty nail and blood orange. On the palate, this Barolo is so shiny and polished that it feels like silk. Without a doubt, this is one of the top wines of 2018. Drink 2026-2050.

The 2018 Barolo is a wine of extreme elegance and nuance. Dried red cherry, tobacco, dried flowers, mint and sweet spice are all nicely lifted in this sublime, delicate Barolo. All the elements fall into place so effortlessly. The 2018 naturally does not have the body of more important years, but it offers tons of persistence and fine balance. It has closed down quite a bit since I first tasted it a few months ago, which is probably a good sign. An opened bottle just got better and better over time. Drink 2028-2043.

Lush and pure, the 2018 Barolo is a medium and transparent ruby hue, with aromas of fresh roses, wet stone, and ripe raspberry. This medium-bodied red is luxurious. with a silky and viscous texture and generous notes of ripe red cherry, warming cardamom spice, and soft earth. Elegant and long through the palate, with no harshness, it is drinking beautifully now or will continue to drink well over the next 15 years. Fermentation saw 45 days on the skins with a submerged cap. Drink 2023-2038.

    Christian Drouin Reserve Calvados (700ml)
    Normandy, FRANCE
    $119. 99

    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Between September and November, Drouin harvests thirty organically grown apple varieties including bitter, bitter-sweet, sweet and sharp cider, then naturally ferments them. Typically kept for months in vats and tuns, young cider is distilled to produce fruity spirits destined to be sold as young calvados, while cider that’s kept longer is distilled around June to produce a more robust spirit better suited to long ageing. Drouin uses casks that may have previously contained sherry, port, rivesaltes (a type of sweet wine) and banyuls (French fortified wine). In this example, the Réserve is a blend of several distillates mostly aged in smaller used casks. The style intends to offer a nice balance between primary orchard fruit notes and spices. 40% Alc./Vol.

Lindores The Casks of Lindores Sherry Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Lowlands, SCOTLAND
    $124. 99
    Bottle
    $1499.88 Dozen
    ABV: 49.4%

Fully matured in Oloroso butts as evidenced by the spectacular colour, this is the third and final bottling of a limited edition series making up the core cask types of Lindores Abbey MCDXCIV. Our tasting from a 20ml sample revealed a medium bodied style that falls into a fresher sherried spectrum. Early cocoa and walnut fudge are followed by prunes and fruit bread while late hints of dried figs, cinnamon and fruity dark chocolate add interest. Elegance is the key word here, which is unexpected for such a relatively young malt. 49.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Mellow fruity prunes, dates, molasses, touches of vanilla and milk chocolate. Palate: Mellow dried fruits, molasses, dark chocolate with layers of cinnamon and ginger combined with a pleasant nuttiness like walnuts and chestnuts. Smooth texture. Finish Medium to long.

    $1499.88 Dozen
    ABV: 49.4%

The second release in the "Casks of Lindores" series, created to showcase the award winning spirit of Lindores Abbey distillery and the three core cask types used to mature its flagship malt. This one's matured exclusively in STR (shaved, toasted & re-charred) red wine barriques. Our tiny sample suggested a youthful, zesty, full-flavoured dram defined by rich oak character, balanced by fresher orchard fruit notes through the finish - in particular ripe plums and pears. Straightforward but very tasty, it comes bottled at 49.4% vol. with zero chill filtration.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Mellow fruity apricot jam, toffee notes and a hint of cinnamon combined with butter and custard. Palate: Sweet and spices. Mellow plums and red berries, treacle, cinnamon spice and a pleasant woody smoky note. Very smooth, silky texture. Finish: Medium to long with spices, honey and caramel notes.

Other reviews... Golden Promise, superb barley (think Macallan), but lower yields than those of newer and blander strains. What would you think the industry did when those came out? Bingo. Colour: white. Nose: chevalier was deeper and sweeter on the nose, golden promise is fatter, less 'sweet', more on grassy and fattish elements, oils, earths, root vegetables… Chevalier just killed you, this is more introspective… Mouth: indeed, fat, rawer, tougher, probably needing more aging (and perhaps proper sherry casks). Even at 43%, it is a tad tough and brutal. Finish: artichokes, perhaps? Comments: I could down a magnum of the chevalier, I'm not sure I would quaff a wee glass of the golden promise in this state. But what you do get here is the potential. Remember the old saying, when the new-make's too good, the whisky will be crap. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Other reviews... Obviously not whisky, but they've used Chevalier, an older, higher-quality strain of barley. In French, chevalier means knight, just so that you're in the know. Colour: white. Nose: exactly what we've always dreamed of, some proper barley eau-de-vie, rather than just raw newmake. I find this utterly stunning, deep, complex, with some buttered caramel, quince pie, dried jujubes, goji, even umami, lees, ale… Wow wow wow! Mouth: perfect. This is the spirit. Barley in majesty, breads, ales and stouts, figs, fudge, butterscotch, pear liqueur… Even the strength of 43% vol. is perfect in this context. Finish: medium, earthy, terroiry (hey hey) and just f…… good. Apologies. Comments: I remember when I first tried white Clairin from Haiti. Similar feelings. Oh and yes, some new clairins soon on WF! 89 points - whiskyfun.com

Champagne Guiborat is based in the grand cru village of Cramant, right in the heart of the Cote de Blancs. Much of their vineyards are planted in the deep chalk soils of Cramant and Chouilly grand crus, along with a parcel in the Marne near Epernay where they have some Pinot Meunier. While they own 8 hectares of vineyards, three quarters of their production is sold off to Laurent-Perrier, keeping only the best parcels for their own label.

Prisme is a 100% Chardonnay cuvee exclusively from old vine parcels owned by the family, namely Les Bergeries (Cramant, planted in 1984), Le Mont Aigu (Chouilly, planted in 1970 and 1979), and Les Caurés (Chouilly, planted in 1946 and 1988). The emphasis with Prisme is to display the transparent nature that the chalk soils of Cramant and Chouilly lend to these wines. Vinification occurs in 96% stainless steel, with the balance in neutral oak barrels. Following 7 months on lees the wine is assembled and sees a further 44 months on lees in bottle, and 12 months resting in the cellar before release. Dosage is a very low 1.5g/L.

The NV Extra-Brut Prisme . 17 is a taut, chiseled wine, based on the 2017 vintage with 13% reserve wines. Offering up notes of citrus zest, verbena, warm bread and fresh herbs, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and incisive, with racy acids underpinning an attractive core of ripe fruit. Drink 2023 - 2029.

In certain years Richard Fouquet will release a wine solely from the Mont-Aigu parcel (planted 1970), however in the warmer years he chooses to combine fruit from this warm site with the cooler exposure of the Caures vineyard (planted 1946). This 100% Chardonnay cuvee is vinified in stainless steel and rests on lees for 6 months, before a further 68 months on lees in bottle prior to being disgorged with 1.5g/L dosage.

Incorporating some 16% of lieu-dit Caurés to temper the richness of Montaigu in sunny vintages, Guiborat's 2015 Extra-Brut De Caurés à Montaigu offers up aromas of crisp green apple, white flowers, citrus oil, freshly baked bread and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, it's racy and charming, with a pure core of fruit, a pillowy mousse and a chalky finish. Drink 2023 - 2038.

    $125. 00
    Bottle
    $1500.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Chateau La Tour Blanche takes its name from the founder of the estate, Jean Saint Marc du Latourblanche, and is one of the most respected producers in Sauternes. The 40 hectares of vines used for their grand vin are planted in one large parcel with a prime location close to the Ceron river, and the soils are a mix of gravel, clay, sand, and limestone. Planted here is a combination of 83% Semillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc, and an unusually high proportion of Muscadelle at 5%. The Semillon is aged in 35% new, French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months, while the Sauvignon Blanc and the Muscadelle are aged for 16-18 months in stainless steel vats before blending and bottling.

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 La Tour Blanche has an open, well-defined, slightly Germanic bouquet that gains more intensity with aeration. Just a slight smokiness develops in the glass. The palate is very detailed with fine mineralité, taut and focused, real grip and weight with a persistent finish. This is a classy Sauternes, beautifully crafted and destined to age with aplomb in bottle. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drink 2028-2060.

Another beautiful wine from this estate, the 2019 La Tour Blanche has a medium-gold hue as well as a classic Sauternes bouquet of honeyed peach, white flowers, ginger, and tangerines. Rich and medium to full-bodied, it displays a terrific balance between its sweetness and acidity, a great mid-palate, and certainly no shortage of length on the finish.

White pear, peach and green apple on the nose alongside some candied lemon notes. This is clean and pure with excellent acidity. Quite expressive and pronounced flavours of sherbet lemon, bright and zesty, with some caramel notes and burnt orange bitter edges. I like the overall feel, it's well balanced and fresh with real clarity. One that is more approachable right now. Drink 2027 - 2045.
