    2020 Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion
    Pessac Leognan, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $899. 00
    Bottle
    $10788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14.7%
    Closure: Cork

Located across the road from sister property Chateau Haut-Brion, the 26 hectare vineyard of Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion is not only equally as accomplished today, it often bests the First Growth wine. In fact if the classification of Bordeaux happened again today you would expect La Mission to be included as a First Growth, such is the quality and consistency of the wines.

The deep gravel and clay vineyard is planted to 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc for the red wine, and 62% Semillon, 38% Sauvignon Blanc for the white. Often seen as a more robust and structured wine than Haut-Brion, La Mission is no less concentrated and complex, and can be extremely long lived.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 La Mission Haut-Brion is a brilliant effort that exhibits a level of balance and integration that are impressive in such a powerful young Bordeaux. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with burning embers, pencil shavings, violets and smoked black tea, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered, elegantly muscular profile, its brooding core of fruit framed by a generous endowment of powdery tannin that tempers the ripeness of the vintage. Checking in at 14.7% alcohol, it's nonetheless more classically styled than the more flamboyant 2019 vintage or even the slowly maturing 2010 which I re-tasted alongside for context. Drink: 2035 - 2065.

The 2020 La Mission Haut-Brion has a detailed bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, black olive, terracotta and a light wet clayey scent (I sometimes think of a potter's wheel.) It gains complexity in the glass and becomes increasingly refined. The palate is beautifully balanced and caters for the 14.7% alcohol with ease. Very fine tannins, perfectly matched with the acidity, beguiling in terms of its cohesive and velvety smooth finish that lingers long in the mouth. The greatest La Missions are the effortless ones and the 2020 is just that. Beautiful. Drink 2028-2060.

Perfectly ripe black and blue berries on the nose with blackcurrants, too. Crushed fruit. Complex and perfect. Full and intense. You feel the intensity of the tannins, yet it is not overpowering. They are in a sophisticated and elegant state. Muscular and formed finish. Gorgeous in every sense of the word. Strength with finesse. Drink after 2030.

Lastly, the Grand Vin 2020 Château La Mission Haut-Brion is cut from the same cloth as the La Chapelle, only it brings more of everything. Black raspberries, cassis, ripe cherries, sandalwood, smoked tobacco, and acacia flowers are just some of its nuances, and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless, sexy mouthfeel, remarkable tannins, and a great, great finish. The level of purity, finesse, and elegance, paired with incredible concentration, is something to behold. Give bottles just 5-7 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following half a century. The blend is 48.6% Merlot, 43.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, hitting a natural alcohol of 14.7%. Drink: 2030 - 2080.

A kick of black fruit and confident spice right from the first nose, this is an intense and concentrated La Mission, tightly in control, not letting up from beginning to end. The pencil lead and bitter dark chocolate is layered in between the cassis notes in a way that makes you see the Cabernet influence although this is majority Merlot (once again - this is a character of the year, low yields of Cabernet mean Merlot is more featured in the blend than usual; but the intensity of the Cabernets mean that it still has an outsized influence on flavour profile). Grilled coffee beans overtake on the close of play, this is seductive and switches beautifully between the tannins pressing in on the palate and the juice expanding things outwards. This is the wine to go for in the Domaines Clarence Dillon stable this year. Harvest from 7th to 29th September. Drink 2030 - 2050.

    Jane Anson - Decanter

Dark in color, the wine pops with its profile of Cuban cigars, black currants, camphor, spice, tar and smoke. Full-bodied, powerful, long and rich, the wine builds as it intensifies on your palate. There is length, intensity and layers of mineral-driven, dark red pit fruits with lift and persistency in the extended finish. The wine demands 12-15 years of aging and will evolve for at least 3-4 decades after that. The wine blends 48.6% Merlot , 43.2% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8.2% Cabernet Franc , 14.7% ABV. Harvesting took place, September 7, September 29.

The Pintail brand was originally established by Matthew Gloag and Sons in the 1930s and focussed on bottling dry sherries. After the trademark lapsed it was picked up by Keith Bonnington (Keeper of the Quaich and owner of The Whisky Cellars Independent Bottlers). He's now using it to market a range of hand picked spirits and wines. Whiskies are finished in rare (and often sweet) wine casks, but he has access to other categories too, such as this rum, composed of two barrels from a Single Origin Panamanian estate, matured for a full fourteen years in x-Bourbon casks. Bottled at 'overproof' strength for a full aroma, mouthfeel and flavour, vanilla, ginger biscuits, chocolate orange and charred oak are keynotes to look out for. 54% Alc./Vol.

Discontinued, now back again as a once-off re-release. Grab it while you can!

Brand owners, Bacardi, decided to cease production of Patron's now coveted coffee liqueur in 2021, only to announce its re-release in April 2024 as a one-time offer (according to Patron's marketing team). Tequila is seeing rapid growth and incredible momentum – not just in the United States, so the reason for discontinuing the product came as no surprise: The company wanted to dedicate all of its output to “growing and protecting production and supply of our core super and ultra-premium tequilas.” In short, the liqueur was reported to be a very small profit contributor and not worth the effort. Other brands have tried to fill the void, but none seem to have attained the quasi-cult-like status of Patron's original, with bottles now selling for several hundreds of dollars. It's a blend of premium tequila and a natural essence of Arabica coffee beans sourced from the Mexican states of Veracruz and Chiapas, the former said to provide intense toasted flavour and the latter delicate acidic notes. Part of the drink's appeal is that it's more like a coffee flavoured tequila than a liqueur. As a result, the taste is on the drier side instead of being overly sweet while the higher proof brings out the flavour of the coffee essence without completely smothering the tequila. It's excellent for sipping as well as an essential ingredient in cocktails like the Espresso Martini or as a unique and delicious dessert topping. A cursory scan of the web reveals most outlets in the US and the UK have long since sold out. We've managed to source a little more, but this may well be your final opportunity to score a bottle at a reasonable price. Do it before it flies off the shelves and disappears again. 35% Alc./Vol.

2011 Talisker 25 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Isle of Skye, SCOTLAND
    $1199. 00
    Bottle
    $14388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45.8%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.

Previously only available as part of Diageo's annual Special Releases program, the 2011 edition was the first to be bottled at the classic Talisker strength of 45.8%, instead of cask strength. Outurns were typically around 20,000 bottles annually.

Other reviews... Talisker is slowly becoming Diageo's most 'animated' malt name, while most other distilleries remain very quiet (some would say elegantly self-assured). This year alone, we see the third new NAS expression, namely Dark Storm, which may be to Storm what Double Black is to Johnnie Black. Or not... I think this was the first 25yo bottled at Talisker's usual lower strength instead of the previous 'high strength' levels. The last earlier version that we've tried was the 2008 at 54.2%, brilliant stuff (WF 91). Colour: full gold. Nose: a completely different planet after the Dark Storm, this is smoother of course, but also more complex, with some lilac, tangerines, roses, almonds, this very 'tropical' smokiness that only old peaters can display, beauty cream, brine, oysters... It's a lovely nose, delicate and subtle. Mouth: once again, a slightly smoother version of an old Talisker but power is there. It's no straight brute as older versions could be (remember the 62% vol? Or was that the 20yo?) but it's not lacking oomph. Smoked overripe apples and lemon curd plus brine and kippers. There. Finish: long, maybe a notch woodier, with this feeling of strong green tea but also a perfect brine. Little pepper this time. Comments: I know some whisky lovers and Talisker aficionados were shocked by the drop in strength and in theory, I should be shocked too, but let's be honest, this remains a mightily powerful dram. 90 points - whiskyfun.com

...Initially salty, then sweet and spicy on the nose, with summer berries, heather honey, and an earthy note, plus subtle peat. Spicy and drying on the slightly waxy palate, with licorice, aniseed, and prominent peat embers. The finish is medium in length, peppery, and relatively tannic. 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Bruichladdich Octomore 14.1 Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $270. 00
    Bottle
    $3240.00 Dozen
    ABV: 59.6%

It’s the time of year for new Octomores, the ultra-peated annual whisky from Islay’s Bruichladdich. Now in its 14th instalment, the whisky comes in the usual three offerings. 14.1 was distilled in 2017 from a 2016 harvest of Scottish grown Concerto barley, malted to 128.9 ppm and aged for five years in first-fill ex-Bourbon casks before bottling at 59.6% Alc./Vol. Judging by the reviews below, this looks to be one of the better Octomores of recent times. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... On the nose, Octomore 14.1 delivers layers and layers of dense peat: sweet smoke with grilled pineapples and hibiscus tea, phenolic peat with peeled-out tires, medicine cabinet, a distinctly oily rubber, and savory charred aromas like a beach bonfire. The palate, while still driving home the peat, is nimble and zesty with oranges and lemon, toasted peppercorns, and a heavy dose of charred grains. The finish is long and much softer, with zippy citrus taking the lead. 95 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...look for a golden hue and mild vanilla and spearmint aromas. The palate opens with mouthwatering butterscotch and menthol, finishing long with a smoked maple-sugar effect, which ever so slowly tapers off. 95 points - wineenthusiast.com

...The peat-lover’s standby ... As bold as ever, the nose is intense with elements of baked apples and ample creosote, then a nutty quality that suggests smoked almonds. It’s quite harsh on the back of the throat at full proof so I added some water to temper it for most of my tasting. This is quite helpful, allowing notes of dried apricots, fresh toffee, and some coconut to come into clearer focus, the finish here less briny than I’ve encountered in past expressions, which I kind of miss. The coconut note lingers the longest, making me dream of a cream pie to pair with this. 119.2 proof. - drinkhacker.com

... Alert, we're losing peat, ha! Just like the others, it's been using Concerto barley. Colour: white wine. Nose: back to austere ones, it seems. A lorryload of chalk and plaster, beach bonfire, 'a huge ashtray late at night', tyres, coal, a bit of glue, some iodine… With water: rather more green vegetables than more wool or chalk. Rucola seems obvious. Mouth (neat): scalpel-like again, with more bitterness, loads of ashes, lemon skins, seawater, oysters, a little varnish… With water: we're closer to 13.1, with ashes and… salted tequila. Quite some nutmeg. Finish: very long, lemony, grassier, and always very ashy. Olive brine in the aftertaste. Comments: it's a little tough to have many Octomore in a raw like this and we're absolutely not done! Liked this one too. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Bruichladdich Octomore 14.2 Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $280. 00
    Bottle
    $3360.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.7%

Other reviews... A robust puff of smoke and tobacco leaf are met marvelously by sweeter, softer notes— lemon pound cake, cinnamon-sugar toast, red berries, and pomegranate. There’s tremendous char on the palate, but it’s balanced by a beautiful sweetness that’s akin to mint tea and campfire smoke. The finish has a hint of meatiness, plenty of pepper, coffee beans, and iodine, and it all comes together exceedingly well. 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...The same 128.9 ppm malting and also 5 years old, but here the aging is all European, completed in 40% oloroso sherry hogsheads, 16% first-fill Amarone casks, and 44% second-fill Amarone casks. That explains the delightful pink color on this whisky, one of the prettiest I’ve encountered in a while. Much lighter and fruit-driven on the nose than 14.1, this whisky melds red fruits and berries with black pepper and mixed spice notes, leaning toward tobacco over time. The palate isn’t nearly as burly as the 14.1 is, though a drop or two of water is still a good idea to temper the hefty proof just a bit. Fresh biscuits and almond cookies kick things off on the tongue, more red fruit — here closer to strawberry — coming along in short order. While coming across as far less peaty than 14.1, the palate still has plenty of bonfire smoke and salty sea spray on offer, tempered again by strawberry cream, then a nougat note. Such a lively journey to go on. My favorite whisky in this lineup. 115.4 proof. - drinkhacker.com

Based in the village of La Roche Vineuse, Olivier Merlin and his wife Corinne founded their domain in 1987 after taking over the 4.5ha of vineyards of the 200-year-old Domaine du Vieux Saint-Sorlin. Since then they have grown to now include 26 hectares of vineyards stretching across Saint-Véran, Pouilly-Fuissé, Viré-Clessé, Moulin à Vent, along with their home in Macon's La Roche Vineuse. While not certified organic, from the beginning they have shunned the use of chemicals in their vineyards and maintain their soils with tilling between the rows. Winemaking is traditional with the handpicked grapes pressed as whole clusters before fermentation and maturation mainly in cask, where new oak use is decreasing year on year.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Saint-Véran Côte-Rôtie comes from soils with a high level of active limestone, prompting Merlin to describe the wine as almost Chablis-like. It has a taut and direct, minimalist, flinty bouquet where you can almost smell that limestone. The palate is tense and very mineral-driven, plenty of salinity here…it just cries out for some fruits de mer! Drink 2023-2035.

This superb lieu-dit in the village of Davayé in the St-Véran appellation faces due south on steep, rocky soils at the base of the rock of Vergisson. It is among the first parcels to ripen. Grapes were picked on 27 August and they delivered a wine of concentration and depth, with aromas of ripe apricot and peach, accented with a saline minerality and a hint of spice from the oak élevage. This substantial wine is eminently ageworthy. Drink 2023 - 2033.

    Other Reviews....
Bottled just prior to my visit, the 2020 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Les Cras has a taut and crisp, petrichor-tinged bouquet, backward compared to Merlin's other cuvées but nicely focused. The palate is well balanced with a slight menthol tincture, fine acidity with plenty of substance towards the slightly honeyed finish that manages to maintain tension. Excellent. Drink 2023-2036.

A marvel of complexity and depth, with aromas ranging from bright citrus to richer notes of melon and ripe apple, along with hints of hazelnut and mineral with a broad and ripe texture which is eminently balanced. 18 months in cask (10% new), it is drinking well now but should age nicely over the mid-term. The 2019 Barolo Cerretta is stunning already, offering wonderful floral notes as well as pure red fruits and delicate, smoky incense. It is linear and persistent but remains elegant, with notable but refined tannins. Tightly coiled and energetic, with blood orange, bergamot, and crushed stones, this rocky, vibrant red can be enjoyed 2026-2046+.

Harvested classically around 20 October, Roberto Conterno's Cerretta is a sleek example of a powerful wine with grace. Dried roses and dried cherries are highlighted, with fresh strawberry and watermelon, completed by sweet violet and orange peel on the finish. The attack is firm and extracted, dense and dusty; a concave wine with refreshing acidity balancing the 15% alcohol, and a savoury aftertaste. It will be released in October 2023 – a further six months in bottle will enhance its integration even more. Drink 2024-2050.

"Glenmorangie at its very best." - whiskyadvocate.com

The raw materials used to create this whisky are quite unusual and include estate grown Cadboll malt along with chocolate malt (chocolate malt is usually used in the production of beers like porter and stout). The whisky has been matured in new, low toast, Ozark American oak casks and ex-Oloroso sherry casks. It is the brainchild of Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's head distiller who first had the idea over 20 years ago.

Retasted June 2017... Brilliant topaz / beams from the glass. Almost floral notes of cocoa and manuka honey drizzled over hints of orange spice cake and shortbread. Starts understated and fresh but finishes unlike almost any other whisky: A peacock's tail of fantastic length and force with miniature detonations of orange zest, dark chocolate, hazelnut and sweet spice dappling the tongue. The persistence is quite exceptional. Maintains its place as a high point in the Glenmorangie stable. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... It is the pace of the flavour development of the whisky, with it moving from one phase to the next, which is most mesmerising...Glenmorangie is in a very good place right now. 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

...An innovative offering made with a proportion of chocolate malt and matured in virgin American oak. Some of the component whiskies are between 35 and 40 years old. Milk chocolate, honey, orange marmalade, sultanas, and spice on the inviting nose. The palate is rich and full, with malt, dates, Jaffa oranges, dark chocolate, and coffee beans. Long and spicy in the drying finish. Glenmorangie at its very best. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Spring 2019)

First tasted 2008... Deep orange brown colour with golden hue. Sweet and inviting nose of Mixed Peel, Chocolate, Coffee beans and Almond biscuit. The palate is thick, luscious and mouthfilling, almost creamy. Pronounced flavours of chocolate, coconut, orange, vanilla and hazelnut. The palate shows no sign of spirit heat, even without the addition of water. Outstanding balance. Exceptionally long, supple aftertaste of chocolate, vanilla, almond and hazelnut. Hints of orange emerge then fade. Drink with chocolate or dried fruit desserts, coffee or a cigar. A phenomenal, if unusual whisky. 97 points

Maxime Chapoutier is part of a family of winemakers who have been working in the Rhone Valley since 1808. When a botanist was enlisted to carry out research on local plants, Maxime was indirectly inspired to conduct plant distillation trials from a specific plot. It led to the creation of Sothis gin, using a base spirit derived from organically grown grapes. Our tasting found low-key aromas of bitter lemon, juniper, light ginger and white pepper that follow into a silky, medium bodied palate hinting at citrus peel, thyme, pine needles and chamomile tea, wrapped up in a peppery, medium long finish. The style here is relatively understated, so avoid heavy mixing. Botanicals include juniper, aced, chamomile, yarrow, everlasting, wild thyme, verbena and sweet clover. Batch 03 tasted. 43% Alc./Vol.

The 2020 Bellevue Mondotte is made from 100% Merlot, with an alcohol of 14.92% and a pH of 3.54. It is aging in French oak barriques, 90% new. Displaying an opaque purple-black color, it sashays out of the glass with flamboyant notes of plum preserves, blackberry compote and blueberry pie, plus hints of hoisin, Chinese five spice and camphor with a touch of dried rose petals. The concentrated, seductive, full-bodied palate delivers layer upon layer of black and blue fruit preserves, accented by exotic spices and supported with firm, ripe, rounded tannins plus fantastic freshness. The finish is epically long and achingly fragrant. Wow! Drink: 2027 - 2060.

The 2020 Bellevue Mondotte is a dark, brooding Saint-Émilion, from just two hectares of vineyards. Graphite, gravel, scorched earth, inky dark fruit, chocolate and cloves stain the palate. Deep and explosive, with tremendous energy, the Bellevue Mondotte is magnificent and also one of the most distinctive wines in the appellation. In 2020, it’s 100% Merlot, as the small parcels of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon that once were used here have been budded over to Merlot. What a wine! Drink: 2030 - 2050.

The 2020 Bellevue Mondotte is another powerhouse from the team at Pavie. All Merlot from the upper plateau above Château Pavie (the soils here contain a touch more clay), this full-bodied, deep, concentrated 2020 has a tight, unevolved bouquet of darker raspberries, cassis, truffly earth, and chocolate. Balanced, structured, and incredibly pure, it's mostly potential at this point and needs to be forgotten for 5-6 years. Drink: 2028 - 2053.

Quite heady nose full of fleshy and fragrant plum jam. Unctuous and bright on the palate, lifted and lively, I love the hint of sweetness alongside wet stone, liquorice and a sharp, almost bitter black chocolate note. A lovely gentle elegance and sense of refinement. Plush tannins give the weight, density and structure, kept lifted by the acidity and finishing with a salty, minerality. Drink: 2025 - 2040.

Produced from 100% old vine Merlot, the black, and purple color alone tells you this is going to offer a deep, tasting experience. The wine is intense, full-bodied, deep, long, and opulent, providing seamless layers of chocolate-covered blackberries, black cherries, plums, and espresso. Yet, with all this depth of flavor, everything is balanced, harmonious, long, and hedonistic. The finish offers to lift, purity, and velvet-textured tannins that coat your palate stains your teeth, and doesn't relinquish their hold on you for more than 50 seconds, leaving you with waves of rich plums, and black cherries with tones of crushed rocks, and stones in the endnote. However, it is not easy to find as only 350 cases, give or take were produced. Drink from 2027-2055.

The 2020 Flaccianello della Pieve is the full package. This point is clear when you taste all the other wines in the Fontodi portfolio and conclude with this bottle. This organic Sangiovese shows beautiful intensity and remains balanced throughout with dark fruit, crushed stone, spice and wild rose. It borrows themes of elegance, depth and ripeness played across this vintage. The wine wraps smoothly over the palate with substantial fruit weight and sweet tannins. This warm-vintage expression can be aged or enjoyed straight out of the gate. Production is 60,000 bottles. Drink 2024-2048.

The 2020 Flaccianello della Pieve is a blend of Fontodi's vineyards, mostly three main vineyards planted on sites with very dense, heavy rocks. Dark, pliant and inviting, the 2020 is so expressive today. Black cherry, plum, spice, lavender, licorice and mocha are seamless in the glass. The 2020 is a fine Flaccianello with a bright future. Most of this blend is sourced from three parcels in upper hillside vineyards close to town center. The 2020 spent a year and a half in barrique (40% new) and six months in cask. Drink 2026-2045.

The Fontodi 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Terrazze San Leonlino (a certified organic wine) is a new addition to this exciting portfolio, now in its second vintage. With fruit from the upper part of the Conca d'Oro of Panzano, this wine shows a more robust and powerful personality with a strong 15% alcohol content. It ages in barrique and botte for 24 months. The bouquet is rich with cherry liqueur, blackberry kirsch and dried plum. There is more fruit weight here and you taste the ripeness in the grape skins. The wine has an almost carbonic quality that reminds me of cherry cola, and it ends on a sweet note with soft tannins. Only 5,000 bottles were made. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Congratulations are in order. When it comes to durif, the term 'reserve' can mean pushing the envelope. Instead, behold a wine of poise, engaging charm AND cellaring potential. Blueberry, cherry, plum, lavender, rosemary and hazelnut. Expansive and finely edged on the palate with an inviting core of lifted aromatics, fruit, chocolate and a touch of savouriness. Durif’s usually pesky grape tannins are in control, but not aggressively so. It's a subtle difference that allows something for now (drinkability) and something for later. Best of both worlds. It's a flavoursome, fuller-figured red with clove and cinnamon wood a feature over red plum, raspberry coulis and figgy, dried fruit characters. A rich, full-bodied wine exuding cloves, blue fruits, mace and tea tree. The tannins, a sheath of astringent gristle and polished grain, a gentle seam of oak attacking the long, bolshy finish. Completed in 2010, Roseisle is a new addition to the Diageo stable, built to produce large quantities of malt for blends. Its design is also geared towards flexibility. According to Scotchwhisky.com. "Six of its seven pairs of stills can switch between stainless steel or standard (copper) shell and tube condensers. If a light grassy spirit is required, long fermentation (in excess of 90 hours) is used, along with slow distillation with air rests, and condensing in the copper condensers. Conversely, if a heavy style is needed then the stainless steel condensers will be used. The lack of extended copper ‘conversation’ will add the requisite weight to the spirit. A nutty (malty) style could also be produced by shortening mashing and fermentation regimes. The grassy style which is currently produced is different noticeably to that from other Diageo sites such as Glen Ord or Royal Lochnagar."

This special release was matured in first-fill and refill bourbon barrels. A sweet, chewy malt, it conjures notes of toasted cereals, dried grass, sponge cake and bittersweet chocolate, leavened by some attractive fruity moments through the warm, spirity finish. 56.5% Alc./Vol. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

Other reviews... This first single malt release from Roseisle has a nose of orchard and citrus fruit, with kumquat, lime, banana leaf, nectarine, red apple, and jasmine, with a touch of white pepper and vanilla oak. Buttery and fruity on the palate, with green apple, orange, lime, and plenty of spice, settling to apple, marshmallow, cotton candy, and background spices. Residual fruit, spice, and a touch of creaminess on the finish. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Here, I believe, is the first commercially released version of Roseisle, beyond the various samples that have been circulating since its launch in 2010. Roseisle's total capacity is 10 million LPA, which isn't huge (Glenfiddich and Glenlivet are much larger). I had the joy of visiting Roseisle with the Malt Maniacs on our 15th anniversary in 2012. Roseisle can produce very different styles, especially by using stainless steel instead of copper in the condensers, which generates thicker, less pure textures, even quite sulphurous ones, but it seems that the priority has remained with light and herbal malts, no doubt much easier to 'correct' when filled / used. Colour: golden. Nose: indeed, I find it quite herbal at the start, then more on apples and plums, then melon, nectarines, almond paste, coconut, and fresh wood. It's nice but there isn't a huge personality, we remain in the realm of the largest Speyside distilleries. With water: the same feeling. Ripe apple, beer, freshly mown lawn... Mouth (neat): very creamy, peppery and fruity at the same time, then increasingly herbal, with a bit of syrup and hops in the background. It's especially the quite thick texture that is remarkable, had they used stainless steel condensers? With water: much fruitier, a bit in the style of the strongest Californian IPAs, then more and more herbal and spicy, with a lot of green pepper and pink berries. Finish: quite long, always very spicy, a bit dominated by new wood at this stage. Pear. Comments: nothing more to say, it does the job very well, with a lot of texture. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

The stunning Le Macchiole 2019 Messorio is all Merlot from a special 2.5-hectare plot with a classic mix of Bolgheri soils featuring clay, silt, sandstone and limestone. The wine ferments in concrete and finishes in new barrique for 18 months. I spoke with proprietor Cinzia Merli about Merlot, and she concedes that this early-ripening grape suffers the most because of climate change. However, the winemaking team works extra hard for balance and elegance notwithstanding. This beautiful wine releases perfumes of cherry, blue flower, iris root, crushed stone and slate. Well-balanced oak tones add power and texture to the full-bodied close. 11,000 bottles were released. Drink 2025 - 2048.

The 2019 Messorio marries the natural opulence of Merlot on the Tuscan Coast with a feeling of finesse I don’t think I have ever seen here before. Dense midnight black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Nosing offers up lifted aromatics of dark plum, black cherry and liquorice with some vanillin cedar, smoked meat and peppered clove notes also evident. Mid weighted generous dark plum, black cherry and liquorice fruits carry plenty of flesh across the palate. Scorched earth, clove and peppered meat elements lie underneath. Nicely integrated fine grained tannins concluding ripe and savoury.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

    Other Reviews….
Fruit from Kaurna Country, off a Blewitt Springs site, and as with its grenache sibling, this is aged in used French oak (barriques and hogsheads); however, this spends 16 months in barrel. An outrageously vibrant dark purple/red hue, so enticing; while there’s a whiff of (diesel-like) reduction, the palate is awash with blueberries, dark plums, loads of spices and umami accents of soy sauce. Full-bodied, rich and ripe with bolshie tannins leaving a firm finish, fresh and a little drying, in a good way. Drink by 2033.

2021 Cesar Marquez Perez El Val Godello
    Bierzo, SPAIN
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Cork

Cesar Marquez has Bierzo running through his veins, and is the latest generation of the Perez family to own the leading Castro Ventosa winery in north-western Spain. Growing up surrounded by the region's leading exponents, including a lengthy apprenticeship with one of the world's greatest winemakers, his uncle Raul Perez, has shaped much of what Cesar values in wine. While he still manages the family estate, Cezar started his own venture in 2015, and is already one of the most exciting young prospects in Spain.

Having a deep understanding and access to some of the best vineyards Bierzo has to offer, Cezar focuses on preserving purity and freshness, highlighting the promise Mencia has in the right place when made with attention to detail. Cezar is structuring his line-up of wines in Burgundian fashion, making a broader appellation wine, a village wine, along with several single vineyard offerings. Winemaking is similar on all wines, with grapes partially destemmed and fermented in open barriques, before spending 12 months in old barrels without any racking or top ups before bottling the following winter. These are wines that are not just great examples of Bierzo Mencia, but wines that truly stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest from any region or country.

El Val is a new wine of 100% Godello from a cool, high altitude vineyard, and transcends the quality limits expected of this grape in Bierzo.

    Other Reviews....
The new white 2021 El Val comes from one of the coolest places in Valtuille—the same place as a new white for the family firm Castro Ventosa—with vines regrafted to old-clone Godello. It has 12.48% alcohol, very good parameters for acidity and freshness and a consistent sensation on the palate. It's from ancient vines on clay, stone and quartzite soils and fermented in one 500-liter barrel where the wine matured with the lees that were never stirred for 11 months. It's super elegant, very clean, precise, symmetric and delineated, transparent, harmonious and elegant, like a grand cru Burgundy. Bravo! The price is high, reflecting scarcity but also quality. It transcends the appellation and the variety. Only 521 bottles were produced. It was bottled in August 2022. Drink 2023-2032.

Plenty of flavour and texture here, mint and green apple, a little honey gloss, some exotic spice too. Some chalky texture, a light lemon peel bitterness and grip, kind of honey/creamy too, but with intense acidity to cut through, and a long nutty/spicy finish. Very good. Drink 2022-2028+

    $1999. 00

    $23988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 55.4%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured. This one, in particular, has some impact crumpling to the front, bottom edge. See picture.

A single cask selection from a from first fill bourbon barrel, cask #1275 was limited to just 252 bottles. 55.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Other reviews... Colour: white wine. Nose: punchy, starting in an unusual way, on hints of green olive and even capers on top of a peatiness that isn’t huge but certainly bigger than the SMWS’. The rest is rather classic young Ardbeg, without any big bourbonny notes. Seawater, peat smoke, kippers and freshly cut apples. With water: more of the same, with an emphasis on the coastal notes and a little mint kicking in. Mouth (neat): powerful and very, very ‘Ardbeg’. Ashes, liquorice, smoked salmon, pepper, ‘raw’ peat, tar, green apples and a little salt. Not really complex but impressively punchy if you like them young. With water: clean, classic young Ardbeg, on apples, peat, pepper, marzipan, gentian and seashells. Finish: quite long, with quite some saltiness and notes of walnut skin as well as a little eucalyptus and lemon balm. Faint earthiness. Note that the finish is more pleasant when undiluted. Comments: very ‘young Ardbeg’, that is to say quite simple but very satisfying. I guess a good way of coming up with more complexity would be to marry various kinds of casks, including sherry. Hey, you could even call that Rollercoaster.  85 points - whiskyfun.com

    36 Short Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml) - 40%
    South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

36 Short's latest single malt is created in the same way as their 45% ABV expression, minus the red wine cask finishing: Australian malted barley, water from an aquifer underneath the distillery and maturation in locally sourced, shaved and charred American oak barrels is followed by further resting in x Bourbon barrels to add complexity and fruity notes. The result is a modern yet balanced whisky with a well-rounded, light-weight feel bottled at an accessible 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Colour: Deep gold autumn barley. Nose: Sweet and fruity on the nose, with tart lime marmalade notes. A faint aroma of fresh cut pine and tropical fruit adds a delicate malt finish. Taste: A warm roundness encompassing the whisky with character of a tangy dried fruit medley. A hint of vanilla bean, taking you on a long, sweet fruity journey. Finish: A beautiful long finish with a taste of dried mixed fruit. Lingering with notes of apricot and peaches with a warming finish.

Le Clos du Caillou was established in 1895 with the Vacheron family taking over in 1956, focusing on organic farming and planting vineyards. Now, the younger Vacheron generation is gradually assuming control, with guidance from Bruno Gaspard.
The Cotes du Rhone Blanc consists of 50% Grenache Blanc, 35% Viognier, and 15% Clairette, sourced from 40-50 year-old low yielding vines. Hand-picked fruit is carefully sorted, then gently pressed as whole bunches and left to settle overnight at 10°C. Afterward, they undergo cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks and age on fine lees for four months.
Bright pale straw colour with straw tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of pear and ripe Jonathan apple mix with honeysuckle and ginger spice notes. Fleshy pear, apricot and honeysuckle flavours have a luscious feel and carry good textural volume. Notions of wet stone and subtle ginger lie underneath. Finishes dry with good freshness and a well rounded, gently spice conclusion.

Hellyers Road Distillery Double Cask Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.2%

As the name suggests, 'Double Cask' spent five years maturing in American oak followed by a finishing period in French oak. Deeply scented, the nose offers rich vanillan oak, Ovaltine and hints of pickled ginger. The slightly grassy, bittersweet, warm-alcohol style of early Hellyer's bottlings is salient on the palate where a hint of sulphur and something almost metallic mingles with hot spices, the malt and sweet oak rebounding in a bittersweet finish. Tasted from a 50ml sample. 46.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... As the new iteration of Hellyers Road's pinot noir cask whisky, Double Cask has a big job on its hands. But at under $120 for a 700ml bottle at 46%, they're already off to a flying start in terms of value. There's significantly more oak influence here, with the combination of French and American timbers shining through on the rich, dark, well-developed nose. Think green walnuts, cassia, autumn leaf litter and antique furniture. The palate is also dry and woody but with a great integration of spirit that carries through nicely and at great length. If you like oaky tannin and not a lot of sweetness but appreciate textural whisky, this is a solid drink for a super reasonable price. 88 points - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

Notes from the producers... Expect vibrant notes of raisin toast, stewed fruits and candied orange with a hint of clove.

Kilchoman Pedro Ximenez Sherry Cask Matured 2023 Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Like many others, we've been long-time fans of Kilchoman. Some go as far to say that no better quality peated malt is currently produced in Scotland. A small scale, hands-on approach and attention to detail make each release at least as good as the last. The 2023 PX Sherry edition is the first Kilchoman to be aged full-term in PX casks. You might consider five years old to be too young, but PX hogsheads can be aggressive; a shorter spell is often the best option to ensure a balanced result. Here, the citrus sweetness and peat smoke are beautifully married with the fruit'n'nut chocolate character of the sherry. Never too sweet, by the finish it's definitively Kilchoman; Vivacious and fresh, with a signature rush of maritime peat and tingling pepper fading into cocoa and wood smoke. Distillery character wins the day. Tasted from a 30ml sample. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 23,000 bottles produced.

Other reviews... An exquisite combination of sherry fruit and peat smoke, with aromas of sultana, allspice, aniseed, nutmeg, cigar wrapper, Brazil nut, and licorice. The indulgent notes continue uninterrupted on the palate, with muscovado sugar, chocolate brownie, malt, and zested orange, winding down with rich dark chocolate and dried vine fruits into a soothing finish of raisin, peat smoke, and chocolate. (1,980 bottles for the U.S.) 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Sweet sultanas and raisins with rounded peat smoke and layers of liquorice and hints of citrus sweetness. Palate: Brown sugar and malty sweetness then orange peel, citrus, dark chocolate and waves of sherry sweetness. Finish: Chocolate coated raisins, oak smoke, mixed spices and lasting PX sweetness.
