Polished yet structured tannins concluding with a fleshy medium to long aftertaste.

Aged 14 months in French and American barriques and puncheons (30% new) followed by four months in older oak. Balgownie is a shiraz specialist, bringing a sense of individuality to each incarnation. Sunny in disposition and warm-hearted in style. Plum and mulberry aromatics ignite with nutmeg, cinnamon, licorice and vanilla. Layers of flavour entwine nicely with well-placed vanillin oak and well-crafted tannins. The winemaker has given the fruit his best attention. It shows. Drink by 2030.

Fermented in French oak barriques (30% new) then matured in the same barrels on lees for 11 months. Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinctive greenish tinge to the edges and a watery hue. Lifted white peach and ripe nectarine aromas mix with melon, toasty oak, nougat and spice notes. Fleshy white peach and nectarine fruits are delivered with good concentration and freshness over a toasty oak, citrus and spicy almond background. Elegant mid length finish.

Their renewed attention to detail is also evident in the new bottle design, introduced from the 2013 vintage and featuring a smart engraved logo. The 41 hectare vineyard is planted on clay over limestone soils, with a varietal mix of 93% Semillon, 6% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Muscadelle.

The nose offers gumdrops, blackberry jam, and spicy herbs, while the palate is soft and fruity, with raisin, sweetened caffe au lait, and some bitter chocolate. There are few more decorated whisky veterans than Richard “The Nose” Paterson. His latest project is a collaboration with Ian Macmillan, a four-decade Master Distiller who's spent time at Bunnahabhain, Tobermory and Deanston. Together they've created three premium blends. Famously claiming to have “rejected more than they selected”, the result is a series which marries the rich heritage of whisky in Scotland with a sense of modern innovation. Sub-titled 'triple cask', the 14 year old is matured in freshly emptied bourbon barrels and finished in three types of sherry casks - Amontillado, Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel, all from Bodega San Andrés, Spain.
Far from your everyday blend, this skillfully composed whisky is geared towards single malt drinkers, or will be a bridge for beginners. In terms of aromatics, mouthfeel and taste, it carries the same gravitas as late middle-aged bottlings of Glenallachie, Glenfarclas or Macallan in a full bodied, sweetly malty, structured arrangement that conjures poached fruits, vanilla bean, cocoa and whiffs of dunnage warehouses. Spiced chutney and hints of peel marmalade complete the profile with oomph and freshness, extending the mid palate length. The impression you're left with is that Wolfcraig is here to make a statement - just how good blends can be when the right creative forces get involved. That goes for the presentation too. The 'cut glass' decanter evokes mid century modern design and adds a sense of refinement appropriate to the liquid, a fair portion of which you'd expect to be considerably older than the label suggests. Wolfcraig's 14 year old is set to remain limited to relatively small batches of around 4500 bottles in order maintain consistency of style and quality control. Notes from the producers... Nose: Warm and appealing. Enchanting and exhilarating as gentle hints of sunkissed raisins, fresh peaches, tangerines and lemon grass evoke a sense of tranquility as they pleasingly drift in perfect harmony. Exciting aromas quickly follow on with nuances of creamy caramel and vanilla delicately dance in the background to complete this portrait of beauty. Taste: Generous and satisfying. There is true elegance in its muscle as succulent figs, sweet sultanas and Napoleon cake reward the palate, with a hint of demerara sugar and molasses. Located five hours by boat east of Auckland on the wild and remote Great Barrier Island, the suitably named Island Gin Distillery is a female-owned and run operation. “Madame Distiller” (aka Andi Ross) creates gins using solar power and local Manuka Bush honey, as well as more traditional botanicals like angelica root, ginger, Macedonian juniper and coriander. In line with classic London Drys, the freshness of the nose is captured in a whiff of white pepper, pine needles, liquorice root and woody juniper that's mirrored on the palate; Creamy then crisp, a flurry of peppery warmth gives way to juniper and citrus oils; Peel tang rounds off the finish followed by a perfect sprinkling of tingling spice. Easy to like and beautifully integrated, this is a pure, fresh, well-structured, all-purpose gin that works as a mixer but is just as satisfying in Martinis. Not far from the Tanaro River lies Rio Sordo, in the southern part of the Barbaresco village. The light limestone soil with relatively low calcium content (compared to other areas of Barbaresco) produces wines where tannins are never dominant, instead they show a silky quality on the palate that makes them extremely attractive and seductive, never imposing and always elegant. Behind the smooth elegance however, lies a core of powerful structure and very well balanced tannins that give to the Rio Sordo its complexity and longevity.

Pale ruby color with an amazingly restrained character and leafy lightness. Very elegant, with licorice, sweet violet, mineral, cherry pit and peach peel flavors. Over this layered complexity the wine is firm, with dusty tannins, but velvety and ripe. A sticky finish is balanced by a full body and crisp acidity. Delicious. Can be drunk now, but best from 2034.

Rabajà produces a quintessential Barbaresco, one of the most complete and balanced of the single vineyards. The vineyard lies between the two main ridges that form the Barbaresco village, one starting at Rabajà and going West towards the Tanaro River and the other one that goes from Rabajà to Ovello, South to North. The meeting of these two different soils give Rabajà its incredible complexity. Bordering both Asili and Muncagota it combines the personality of those two great vineyards with and extra richness due to the South/West warm exposure.

Pajè is in a small bowl facing South/West and it lies between the village itself and the famous Asili vineyard. The vineyard is slightly lower in altitude and more open to the Tanaro River influence, resulting in a cooler microclimate. The soil is limestone with a high calcium level and as a result the wine combines elegance and complexity with intense tannins; it is never shy in acidity. Pajè appears sharper and brighter in its first years, with lovely youthful fruit and flowery notes, almost minty in cooler vintages and is particularly attractive after some ageing, when the wine still retains a fruitful and fresh palate.

Pajé always represents the lifted, spritely like wine within the Riserva lineup of Produttori. This vintage holds true to that but with a slight darker note on the nose. Aroma of crushed raspberries mixed with black cherries, fresh bay leaf and sweet spice. The first sip causes the head to spin with glee as wild berries, dried roses and sage leap forward quickly tamed by fine tannins and vibrant acidity, acting more as headmasters, telling everyone to wait a bit more to show their goods. Ovello is the northernmost vineyard in the village of Barbaresco and among the first 5 single-vineyards produced back in 1967. Due to its powerful structure, some years of bottle ageing are usually required to balance that out.

The Muncagota vineyard looks South/East - facing cooler morning sunshine instead of the warmer afternoon sun. Because of this, it tends to show beautiful floral characteristics and often a specific mint character on the nose. Calcareous soil and a low level of sand gives to the wines of Muncagota extremely focused fruit and firm, stylish tannin. A perfect example of the elegant and intense qualities that make Barbaresco one of the most interesting and unique wines of the world.

Montestefano is one of the vineyards with higher concentrations of calcium in the soil; this gives the wine a powerful tannic structure. The extra warmth of the South facing slope is responsible for the full body and meaty texture, resulting in a deep flavoured wine with ripe fruit and tannins. In a wetter season it is usually the last to be picked among the Barbaresco vineyards. This is probably the Barbaresco that reminds more of Barolo where flavours of tar and roses prevail. A truly wonderful Barbaresco, never too heavy on the palate with a classy finish that lingers without overwhelming the senses.

Combining power, intensity, class and great fruit, Produttori’s 2019 Montestefano Riserva is a phenomenal wine and a quintessential expression of this fantastic cru. It opens with heady aromas of new leather, Alpine herb, pressed rose, ripe dark-skinned berry and forest floor. It has the most Barolo-like structure of all the firm’s crus, delivering ripe Morello cherry, succulent raspberry, licorice and tobacco alongside a network of firm tannins that are more reminiscent of Serralunga than Barbaresco. A magnificent wine, with incredible aging potential.

From a not widely known vineyard, Montefico sits half way between Ovello and Montestefano and it is often compared to the latter because of their similar soil (high calcium) and their close proximity. Its warm - full south - exposure is mitigated by the cooler northern wind that occasionally funnels into the narrow valley between the villages of Barbaresco and Neive. First released in 1970, it produces classic Barbaresco wines that could be seen as austere when young but with incredible complexity behind the tannins.

Alpine herb, pressed rose, new leather and black tea aromas lead the nose on the superb Montefico 2019 Riserva. Showing the impeccable class and intensity this cru is celebrated for, it’s youthfully austere but also incredibly savory. The firmly structured palate delivers ripe red cherry, raspberry compote, licorice, almond liqueur and saline mineral notes accompanied by a firm backbone of tightly-woven, close-grained tannins. Bright acidity gives it great aging potential.

As always, Montefico is a Barbaresco built on linear intensity more than size. In 2019, the qualities are quite accented. Time in the glass opens the bouquet nicely, but the 2019 remains quite closed. Drink: 2026-2044.

Aged in 53-gallon, char #3 barrels for a minimum of four years and up to 6 years on the Northern California coast, the result is a bold, decadent rye with the richness of American oak set against delicate peel freshness and wood spices; the flavours completely envelop the tongue with an impressive wave of orange oils, the character of the grain upping the texture while adding a finishing hint of peppermint. Easily approached at high strength, this gorgeous rye also offers enough sweetness for Bourbon lovers. Give it time in the glass to show its best. Non-chill filtered.

The broad-shouldered and concentrated flavors are ultra-refined yet exceptionally powerful and almost painfully intense while offer stunningly good length on the graceful and classy finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This gorgeous but imposingly structured effort indisputably qualifies as a 'wow' wine and is one of the wines of the vintage. Drink through 2041+.

Mugnier's 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is just being released, but readers should take its eight years of cellaring at the domaine as a statement of intent rather than a sign to start pulling corks on reception, as the wine is still very far from maturity. Unwinding in the glass with scents of dark berries, orange rind, exotic spices and a deft framing of new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a hugely concentrated core of fruit that reflects the year's low yields, lively acids and supple but abundant structuring tannins, it concludes with a long, palate-staining finish. The latest to be released is the 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru. I vividly recall tasting this with Mugnier in the barrel cellar after the dramatic frost-afflicted season. To refresh your minds, allow me to reproduce the relevant paragraph from that year’s in-barrel report. Mugnier explained: “There were three barrels of young vines, pruned as Cordon de Royat, which suffered limited damage from frost, and three barrels of older vines, pruned as Guyot, that were very badly hit. The former, regardless of the age of the vines, was tasting much denser and had a greater length than the latter. The final blend of Musigny includes all three barrels of the young vines plus one of the old ones, in order to bring a touch of freshness. The two remaining barrels were blended with the Chambolle Premier Cru Les Plantes and the few grapes from Combe d’Orveau to form the Chambolle-Musigny Trente-Deux, so called after the number of vintages that I have made.”
I have re-tasted the 2016 once in bottle, blind at the Burgfest tasting, where it flirted with perfection. Nothing has changed since then. Mugnier poured the wine in November 2023 after tasting his 2022s (bottles have not been labeled, hence the photograph of the cork). The nose is stunning. There’s incredible purity and intensity, fabulous delineation and a sense of exuberance as it doles out red berry fruit, fresh black truffle shavings and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied, with svelte tannins, poised and precise, gently building toward a seamless finish. It represents a heavenly evocation of one of the world's greatest vineyards. Fine mid purple in colour. A very appealing fresh deep red fruit on the nose, quite restrained. Then a bombshell explosion of rich ripe sweet fruit, with just enough acidity at the back. It grows and develops very well, not the most blockbuster of Musignys but finely balanced. This has come on tremendously since tasted in barrel. Indeed only 4 barrels are being bottled as Musigny, with 2 declassified after the frost.

The suitably labelled pre-Prohibition brand, 'Belle Meade' is nowadays bottled by Nelson’s Green Brier out of Nashville Tennessee. The original Green Brier distillery was shut down during Prohibition, but Nelson’s great-great-great-grandsons revived the brand in 2013. While the company does distill at their Nashville location, the Belle Meade brand uses sourced whiskies from Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Hence, it's described as “...a proprietary blend of differing mash bills and yeast strains'' and “is a high rye blend of barrels averaging in age from 6-8 years.” It's variously categorised as a Bourbon, or a Tennessee, depending on your source. A common feature of the Belle Meade whiskeys is that despite their mashbills, rye doesn't dominate. Compared to the 'Reserve', the grain is slightly more obvious in this bottling yet remains low key, right up to the finish. Regardless, if you enjoy elegant, understated whiskeys in the style of Buffalo Trace but are wanting a Bourbon with a little more kick and bite, put Belle Meade's Classic near the top of your list.

Other reviews... Dareringer is a straight bourbon that is aged in new toasted and charred oak barrels and then finished in Casknolia Pedro Ximenez Sherry Casks. Batches are relatively small at no more than 15 barrels, however batch numbers are not provided on each bottle. While PX Sherry Cask finished bourbons can be over-the-top, Rabbit Hole manages to deliver a well-balanced experience that’s quite delicious. Dareringer is full of sweet fruit notes, but manages to hold to its bourbon base with flavors of caramel and oak weaving in and out. Moreover, it’s surprisingly full-flavored for the proof which will appeal to a wide audience as it doesn’t taste high proof, but offers a rich character. The Munda range is all about allowing the fruit to shine while showcasing a sense of place: 40% of the wine is aged for nine months in used French oak and the remainder in stainless steel. It’s as fragrant and heady as a spring day with its florals and baking spices. Loads of cherries and cherry cola, some meaty reduction and a touch of jubey sweetness although this is certainly savoury and thoroughly appealing. Medium bodied with juicy raspberry-like acidity and light, sandy tannins. Gluggable comes to mind.

The Avignon has long been one of my favourites from the Kaesler portfolio. Here its a blend of 48/27/25% grenache/shiraz/mourvédre from the cracking 2021 vintage. It's spicy, detailed and a joy to drink with pure, plummy and red-berried fruits cut with ginger spice, cola, earth, purple flowers and roasting meats. There is a wonderful sense of space and tension, with a bright line and savoury palate shape, finishing chalky with a plume of spice, raspberry and red plum. Drink by 2033.

Since the last time I tried this in 2016, it clearly evidences some evolution though it's clear that this is very much still on the way up. There is still a slight, if discernible, dash of unabsorbed wood present on the notably ripe nose that displays a superb range of spice elements along just a hint of secondary character on the black currant, plum, earth and game scents. The superbly concentrated and overtly powerful big-bodied flavors are wonderfully rich, sappy and lavish large-scaled flavors that flash excellent power and drive on the highly complex and still firm though not longer compact finale that offers simply stunning length. For my taste, this has just now arrived at a stage where it could be enjoyed now though with that said, another 6 to 10 years should be beneficial. A monument in the making. Note that one bottle I have tried displayed a very subtle but not invisible touch of brett. Drink from 2030+.

Glowing vermilion. Rousseau colours are never the deepest but this shade indicates that the wine is still in its infancy. There is an element of reduction on the nose, but all the power is there with an impressive density of deep dark cherry fruit. There is brilliant intensity on the palate too in the classical, polished Rousseau style. Still an infant but it is now possible to see how the wine will unfurl over the next few decades. It is not a complete sin to start drinking this wine, but you will be missing out on a valuable potential upside.

This is tensile, mineral-driven, nicely poised and exuberant, with a sensual and pixelated finish. This just drives home its class. Brilliant. Drink 2025-2048.

My red wine of the vintage. Comparing the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze in Rousseau’s cellar, the Bèze is generally better received in cool years, which is the case in 2021. A slightly more deeply colored hue is in keeping with the somewhat riper, and certainly spicier, aromas of both red and dark currant, exotic tea and more prominent floral nuances, all of which is also trimmed in enough wood to mention. The medium weight plus flavors are almost as powerful as those of the Chambertin if not quite so mineral-driven while displaying equally superb length and complexity on the balanced, graceful and compact finale. The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is being matured in 80% new oak, and it was the one wine in the cellar that was quite strongly marked by its time in barrel when I tasted it. Behind the prominent framing of cedary oak lurks a pretty bouquet of red and black berry fruit, orange rind, rich soil tones and peony. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tangy and open-knit with a vanillin-inflected finish. I suspect that the final assemblage will be more integrated than the single barrel, but in its structure and overall profile, this looks to be reminiscent of Rousseau's 2007 Clos Saint-Jacques.

It is produced from a combination of relatively young vines in Charmes proper with old vines from Mazoyères, which give a very elegant result. Drink 2025-2045.

This subtle but very concentrated Brunello finishes delicately savoury and mineral, with substantial but smooth tannins and lovely lingering perfume of sweet spices and perfume. Although this wine was very shy initially, the Poggio di Sotto 2019 Brunello di Montalcino eventually hits all the high notes of Sangiovese. This is a wine of enormous inner tension, showing a punchy, lifted personality with aromas of cherry skin and blackberry. You get brandied cherry, strawberry glazed pie with the gelatin, underbrush, blue flower, forget-me-nots, balsam herb, mint and licorice. A few hours later, the wine had developed into a classic beauty with slender lines, firm structure and a sparkle of brilliant acidity. The oak is integrated to the point of invisibility, the tannins are elegant and fine and the acidity is that proverbial cherry on top. Ultimately, I liked this village bottling more than the 2018 Riserva. Drink 2030-2055.

The 2019 leaves a salty mineral staining to mingle with fine-grained tannins and spice, as it finishes with incredible length, yet still so fresh. This is incredibly youthful and inward today, but the potential is off the charts. I expect the 2019 to put on some weight and blossom over the next five to ten years. Glorious. Drink 2027-2042.

Despite heavy rain, there was very little disease in 2019 and the hot summer brought the grapes to full ripeness. The subdued cherry aromas reflect the wine's youth, though they became more expressive with aeration. The palate is rich but sleek in texture, with polished tannins and fine acidic lift. The texture is grainy without being tough, and there's so much energy and grip here that the wine clearly has great ageing potential. Very long, with a lightly peppery finish. Fills the mouth, not quite the same intensity at the back as the Clos de la Roche but the Clos St-Denis does have quality finesse at the finish. Drink from 2030-2038.

A completely different nose offers up much spicier aromas of red currant, exotic tea and a similar hint of violet. There is excellent vibrancy to the attractively textured middleweight flavors that don't have the power of the Clos de la Roche but do offer slightly better depth and precision on the lingering finale that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the gorgeously well-balanced finale. This is a stunner of a CSD. Drink through 2034+.

For many years the grapes from the property were sold to negociants, however as these contracts begun to expire in the early 2000's they started taking back the production, and brought on Thomas Colladot in 2010 to oversee winemaking duties. While not certified, organic practices are used in the vineyards, with all fruit hand harvested and whole cluster fermentation used where and as desired depending on the plot and vintage conditions. New oak varies between 30-50% for most wines, and élevage lasts between 15 and 18 months, before bottling is conducted in-house. The wines of Coquard Loison-Fleurot are characterised by their purity and transparency of their terroirs.

The 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak with 20% whole bunches, has an entrancing, beautifully defined bouquet with mineral-rich black fruit, becoming ever more floral in the glass: rose bush and iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit laced with orange sorbet and allspice, building confidence towards its ripe and quite spicy finish. With fine persistence on the aftertaste, this represents a very impressive Clos de la Roche. Drink 2029-2060.

A glowing fresh purple. Not reduction but just a mineral flinty top note above the fruit. Sitting back on its haunches but this lack of immediacy makes it even finer. Discreet but not imperceptible wood sets off distinctly earthy aromas of plum, red currant, spice and a whisper of violet. There is both good volume and a lovely sense of purity to the caressing yet quite powerful middleweight plus flavors that exude evident minerality on the hugely long, balanced and mildly austere finale. This is terrific and highly recommended. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a more generous and expressive bouquet than the Clos de Vougeot: black cherries and wild strawberries, just a bit of reduction to wade through at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid, quite structured entry. Grippy in the mouth, a solid Mazoyères-like Charmes with a dash of peppercorns on the finish. Solid and a bit unyielding at the moment; this is one to cellar for several years before broaching. Drink 2030-2058.

Fresh dark berries, less explosive than Clos Vougeot, all tightly wound with an impressive intensity. The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village, matured in 30% new oak and 25% whole bunches, seems to lack cohesion on the nose at the moment, missing some presence. The palate is medium-bodied with more depth and fruit intensity. It is not a complex Chambolle and a bit austere on the finish, but the whole bunches lend a little grip and spice on the finish. It should give several years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2026-2034.

The world's number one selling blended Scotch and the preferred choice of whisky lovers every where. Johnnie Walker Red Label is a full-flavoured spirit that is a blend of Highland malt and Lowland grain whiskies. Red Label was originally created in 1909 for the new Scotch drinker who was inclined to mix whisky with ice, water, soda or in a variety of cocktails. By widening the range of whiskies used in his father's Old Highland Whisky, Alexander Walker developed Red Label as a smoother and lighter alternative - this was a break from the traditional deeply flavoured, full bodied Scotch whiskies of the past and was considered a more approachable drink. By 1920, Johnnie Walker Red Label had become the first truly global drinks brand, sold in over 120 countries. In 1933, the company was granted a Royal Warrant to supply Scotch to King George V, and the company has remained an official purveyor to the British Royal Household ever since. In 1996, Johnnie Walker Red Label won the Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, having previously picked up Silver Medals over three consecutive years. It has also consistently garnered Gold and Grand Gold Medals at the Monde Selection Awards.
Tasting note: Brilliant, bright gold appearance. Aromas offer a peaty top note hovering over sweet, fat, oily grains. The palate possesses good concentration with the peat laced sweet grains and gentle spices contributing to a fat, rich, oily mouth feel. Aftertaste of vanilla and sweet cereals with the peat re-emerging. Technically faultless and an achievement given how much of this stuff is churned out. But this bottling (and they do vary) is lacking freshness being quite sweet and clunky throughout. In fact, it's almost a little out of balance. Some fresh oak required in the mix? 40% Alc./Vol.
