2016 Benedicte et Stephane Tissot Chateau Chalon (620ml)
    Jura, FRANCE
    $399. 00
    Bottle
    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14.5%
    Closure: Cork

Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

The low-yielding biodynamic Savagnin grapes for these Vin Jaunes are hand-picked and the juice fermented in steel tanks. The mostly clay soils give wines of higher acidity (whereas limestone gives less acidity and more minerality), and strong backbone. After the primary fermentation the wine is part-filled (around 85%) into old barrels (228 lt. usually) and a 'flor' yeast veil or 'voile' develops on the surface of the wine, protecting it from oxidation and adding complex aromas and flavours to the wine. The barrels are stored in a cool but 'airy' cellar (not underground) for around 6-7 years so the dryer atmosphere causes the evaporation of water and therefore concentration of flavours and reduction of the wine volume. In fact, usually only 620ml. (the size of a Vin Jaune bottle) remains from a litre. This is very expensive wine to make, as not only is there a huge volume loss, but often some barrels need to be culled.

Chateau Chalon is no doubt the greatest site in the Jura for making Vin Jaune, the Grand Cru if you will, and produces wines with a touch more finesse than the other single site Vin Jaune in this collection.

    Other Reviews....
Vin Jaune is a very small percentage of the winery's production, as they only make some 7,000 bottles (clavelin) of it per year. It's a scarce and rare wine, which, from the best terroirs, shows vibrant and complex, with power and finesse. That is the case of the 2016 Château Chalon, which has great concentration, even in a lighter vintage, and reflects the more elegant profile of the Lias soils and keeps the citrusy aromas and flavors. It's fresh, expressive, floral and herbal, with character, incisive and pungent. The aging potential of these wines has been proven over the years, and he is experimenting with longer élevage... Drink 2024-2045.

La Mailloche has a gentle east aspect and very degraded soils of Liassic clay. Another wine with good firmness and seductive weight with some nice bitterness.

    Other Reviews....
Same as with the Les Bruyères Vin Jaune, the bottle of the 2016 La Mailloche Vin Jaune had also been open for two weeks, but in this case, the wine was pristine and there was no noticeable oxidation from the contact with air. The wine kept an alcohol level of 14.5% and was singing, with a spicy and salty nose that made me think of French charcuterie (saucisson!), quite rare, even if by then I was already quite hungry. It's elegant and fine-boned. It's more and more evident than La Mailloche is a great terroir capable of producing different styles of wine. Drink 2024-2044.

Hellyers Road Distillery 7 Year Old Single Peated Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.2%

Carrying a decent age statement for an Australian whisky, this is a slightly different expression to Hellyer's early peated efforts. The smoke is perhaps uniquely Tasmanian, being vaguely herbal or more like a distant, damp campfire than the kind of sweet peat-reek you'd expect from a smokey Highlander or traditional Islay. The distillery's grassy-papaya character is evident, the phenols are merely suggested, but combined with an approachable mouthfeel it adds up to an easy introductory style with minimal water heightening the experience. American oak matured. 46.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill-filtered.

Other reviews... The new flagship peated release from Hellyers is proudly seven years old, and I applaud them for being up-front about the age where many Aussie producers would be scared to put a single-digit number on the label. The fact is, seven years in Australia is a very long time to mature a whisky, well above industry standard, so they're right to celebrate the fact out loud. At just $149 a bottle, this competes directly with all but the cheapest Scottish imports. It holds its own, with restrained smoke and buttery, salted shortbread on the nose, woolshed in the summer woodiness and underripe orchard fruits. Very easy drinking with incredibly well-controlled alcohol and an easy, light finish. A fantastic example of how a Scottish style can be interpreted through an Australian lens. 93 points - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

Notes from the producers... Nose - Upon the nose, sweet tea and brine notes tantalize the senses, followed by a delicate balance of sea salt, oyster shell, green leaf, and fresh bark. Subtle whispers of campfire embers intertwine with a hint of medicinal allure in the background. Palate - On the palate, a smooth and textural journey unfolds, with fresh peat leading the way alongside herbal tones, smoked leaf, and the essence of oyster. A touch of honey sweetness gracefully rounds out the palate, delivering a sophisticated richness that coats the senses with unparalleled elegance. Finish - As the journey culminates, a medium-length finish continues to enchant, resonating across the palate with effortless smoothness. Experience the perfect harmony of balance and refinement in this impeccably crafted peated single malt whisky.

Sullivans Cove Single Cask TD0116 American Oak Second Fill 16 Year Old Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    Hobart, Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $799. 00
    Bottle
    $9588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 47.9%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.

In the American Oak Second Fill range, Sullivans Cove offer whiskies of maturity and finesse, drawn from casks seasoned by earlier spirit. Decades of slow ageing in these gentler barrels creates a delicate balance between vibrant fruit and malt character, soft vanilla, and mellow oak spice. In this example the nose needs coaxing to release a fruity aspect, in particular, dried pears, perfectly integrated with the oaky vanillas. The crisp, warming delivery shows a bit of that pickled ginger note that characterised early bottlings, but it's offset by a soft orchard fruitiness, almost like a young Calvados. The finish is subtle, medium-long, with gentle spices. Reveals the distillery's elegant side. 15ml sample.

TD0116 was filled into a cask in Aug 2006 and bottled in Nov 2022 at  47.9% Alc./Vol. 414 bottles produced. One only from a private collection.

This is a dramatic, tannic, bold-fruited red wine with length – not to mention quality – to burn. There's both an elegance and a minerality in play here but brute, impressive force remains the main message. It's another outstanding release from a producer that has hit the ground running in the most emphatic of ways. Drink by 2042.

Only 300 dozen made of this fascinating Coonawarra Shiraz. It hails from an unirrigated 1.5 acre block, planted in the early 1950s. Maturation was for 14 months in French oak, 20% new. Vibrant maroon in colour, this is a wine of depth and concentration. There are notes of dry herbs, bay leaves, chocolate, spices and black fruits backed by tightly wound quality oak which is integrating well. The palate exhibits a move to soy and darker chocolate with even a hint of vegemite. There is good focus through to a very fine silky tannins. It will drink well for a decade with ease. Don Julio Rosado 100% Agave Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $260. 00
    Bottle
    $3120.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A reposado tequila finished for around four months in Ruby Port wine casks from the Douro wine region of Northern Portugal. The result is a deliciously unique tequila with a delicate pink hue and sweet notes of dried red fruit & caramel. Best enjoyed on the rocks or for a lighter, longer drink, add a splash of club soda and lemon garnish. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... If I was nosing this blind — that is, in an opaque glass — I would assume this was a blanco, as the agave is pungent and the Port finishing isn’t evident here at all.

The palate surprises further: While there’s a gentle berry sweetness on the palate, the predominant quality remains agave-forward, touched with a lacing of nougat and sweetness driven by candied nuts. A slight strawberry and cream character becomes more prevalent with time in glass, though notes of green pepper, ground white pepper, and a light rose petal note build over time. The finish sees the most reposado-like qualities of the tequila make their appearance, with elements of sesame seed and a hint of caramel in the mix. Where then is the Port? Port can have an massive influence on just about any spirit, but here it’s largely a no-show. I’m not even sure those gentle strawberry qualities have much if anything to do with the Port, but that’s an open question. At the very least, it doesn’t really resemble Port wine at any point in the experience. But hey, maybe that’s OK. If you like your reposados on the more exuberant side, and plenty do, this tequila will fit the bill perfectly. However, given the price tag, I think anyone would be forgiven for whishing they’d uncovered something a bit more unique and expressive of this special, unique finishing. So it goes. - drinkhacker.com

This takes deep-seated blackcurrant and mint flavours and injects them with long rakes of tannin. It feels profound from the first sip and it continues this impression all the way through to its super-long finish. Talk about impressive. From vineyards on the famous red terra rossa soil in central Coonawarra, planted in 1985. After destemming, the grapes are pressed directly to barrel. The wine spends two years maturing in French oak (mostly), half of which is new. Only 220 dozen made. This is the team’s prestige release and made from barrel selection. An opaque maroon colour, there is serious power and intensity here. Notes of chocolate, tobacco leaf, new leather, warm earth, blackberries, soy and aniseed. Supple texture, very fine tannins, an exemplary structure. The palate sees some delicious blueberries emerge. The wine is nicely balanced with great length and is a twenty year proposition – really impressive. Drink 2023-2043.

Migan and Palo Blanco are both very old vine wines from the Valle de la Orotava zone, although they don’t bear the D.O. stamp. The old vines are trained in the Trezendo fashion: braiding new shoots over older ones until the vines begin to resemble old dreadlocks weaving over the landscape. The terrain is flatter than Táganan, more conducive to farming. Migan is two parcels of Listan Negro, both over 100 years old, while Palo Blanco is a single vineyard from the town of Los Realejos planted on black volcanic soils.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Migan feels very fruit-driven, open and expressive. It's the final blend of the wine, but it still wasn't bottled when I tasted it in early November. The wine feels quite harmonious, juicy and round, with moderate acidity. It's tender and young, still too primary. Drink 2025 - 2029.

Racy and a little less perfumed than Taganan Margalagua that was tasted alongside. There is a little more fruit, depth of color and aroma, but it is less effusive. Wild berries, white pepper funk, grilled grapefruit, dried white asparagus and dried mushrooms. A little more volume and fruit on the palate with silky, soft tannins. So delicious! Drink now.

Benje refers to an area high above the cloud cover on the western edge of the Tiede volcano. It’s an area that produces markedly different wines, from the sappy freshness of the coastal zones but still carries the hallmark lightness of all of Envínate’s wines. Benje Tinto is straight Listan Prieto, Benje Blanco is Listan Blanco. Both are grown on a mixture of old ash and red clay at over 1000m above sea level.

    Other Reviews....
The red 2022 Benje is floral, expressive, clean and elegant, reflecting a very good year in the region, with notes of rose petals and talcum powder, a fine texture and very elegant tannins. This has to be the most elegant Benje to date. 28,000 bottles. It was bottled in July 2023. Drink 2024 - 2029.

A translucent pale red. The nose shows pepper, wild strawberries, a pleasant herbal note and a reductive touch reminiscent of roasted pumpkin seeds. The palate is juicy and medium-bodied with subtle concentration and shy tannins. Super pleasant and drinkable. Made from mostly listan prieto and about 10% listan blanco, from vines planted at 900 to 1,200 meters of altitude.

2022 marks the first vintage of this single parcel wine from a centenarian plot of ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines that had formerly been included in the Palo Blanco bottling. Fermented and aged in a single neutral oak foudre of 1500 liters.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Palo Blanco Las Molinas is a new white from Los Realejos, a large plot of some 1.2 hectares of vines. In 2021, the grapes from this plot went into the Palo Blanco blend that they bottled in 2022. For the 2022 vintage, they bottled a 1,500-liter oak foudre separately to make this wine, and another 3,500 liters still went to the Palo Blanco blend. This has moderate alcohol, 11.5%, and very low pH and high acidity, unusual parameters for the variety, something that seems to come from the zone. It's fresh, floral and expressive with just a spicy twist. It has a vibrant palate and a long, tasty, almost salty finish. There is a plus of complexity and finesse here. 1,988 bottles and 24 magnums were filled in July 2023. Drink 2024 - 2029.

Red plums, spicy incense, and spring flower notes all emerge from the 2023 Château Montviel, a medium-bodied, supple, elegant 2023 offering beautiful ripeness, ultra-fine tannins, and a good spine of acidity. The 2017 Barolo Vite Talin is a total stunner. Dark, rich and sensual, the Vite Talin captures all of the natural richness of the heavily virused, low-yielding clone the Sandrone family propagated in their parcels within Le Coste and Rivasi, both in Barolo. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, cedar, tobacco and kirsch are all dialed up in this explosive, heady Barolo. The 2017 is just next-level wine. Superb. Drink: 2027-2047.

This wine is made with a new clone of Nebbiolo that was identified by the Sandrone family. The 2017 Barolo Vite Talin now occupies the top position in the family portfolio. It represents 30 years of work by Luciano Sandrone, who started his career as cellar master at Marchesi di Barolo. I am told that Nebbiolo is recognized by seven DNA indicators, and Talin (the clone is named after the old farmer who found the first vine) has all seven. Today, the Sandrone family has propagated the clone and is cleaning it from viruses to see how it behaves in the future. Alessia Sandrone is in charge of this process. They notice that berry size is half that of normal Nebbiolo, and the wine is consequently more concentrated and dense. This hot vintage delivers lots of extra power and fruit weight with pressed blackberry, earth, tobacco, clay, autumnal leaf, iodine and candied orange. Drink: 2025-2055.

The 2013 Barolo Aleste Sibi et Paucis, the Sandrone library release of the 2013 is a powerhouse. A rush of black cherry, mocha, new leather, licorice, cloves and tobacco race across the palate. The Aleste is a bit more forward than Le Vigne, but it, too, is aging pretty slowly. The 2013 can be enjoyed now with a good decant, but I would cellar it for another year or two. Aromatics in the empty glass are nothing less than thrilling. Drink: 2024-2038.

Aromas of black berries, cherries, dried leaves, and bark follow through to a full body with firm and chewy tannins and a savory finish. Holding on well in a classic, tannic nature. Held in the cellar of the winery for 10 years. Drink or hold.

Past vintages of this wine report the name of the MGA (Cannubi Boschi), but from this point on, the wine is called Aleste. This is a late-release project with bottles that are held back in a brick-lined room for an additional 10 years of bottle age. The Luciano Sandrone 2013 Barolo Aleste Sibi et Paucis is a true classic. The wine still shows hints of its primary fruit, but it has otherwise moved into an exciting phase of its evolution. There is dried spice, campfire ash, licorice and truffle essence. The flavors trigger your mouth to salivate, and the tannins feel like silk. Drink: 2024-2045.

The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is pure and total seduction. Kirsch, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, cedar, dried herbs and orange peel all grace a Le Vigne built on mid-weight structure and energy. There is a feeling of youthful classicism and austerity that is so beguiling. Readers should plan on being patient, though. Very aromatic with hibiscus, crab apple, orange blossom, and ripe strawberry on the nose. Full-bodied, very layered and powerful, yet it remains very fine textured with an intense finish. The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is a historic blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, Vignane in Barolo and Merli in Novello. This year, a fifth site was added to the final blend. It is the Le Coste MGA in Barolo with south-facing exposures and 45-year-old vines in a two-hectare parcel. The backbone of this wine is Baudana, and Merli adds freshness. The wine needs more time in bottle, but already it proves generous and bold with dark fruit, spice and crushed mineral. The 2022er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese LGK was made from shriveled rather than botrytized fruit and was fermented down to noble sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a gorgeously refined and sumptuous nose of almond paste, pineapple, honeyed yellow peach, tangerine, candied orange zest, fresh apricot, passion fruit, thyme, and smoke. The wine proves magnificently playful on the rich yet refined palate. There is great sweetness and intensity, but also airy and elegant elements which come into play. The 2022 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese Lange Goldkapsel was designated thus because it was not found typical enough for a Beerenauslese, despite reaching sufficient must weight, it was made with 55-60% of botrytis. Mirabelle jelly and compote shine on the nose, slightly lifted, aromatic, ripe and sweet. The palate brings this to the fore, presenting a lovely, concentrated, vividly fruity, bright core of candied Mirabelle, accompanied by gilded, candied citrus, mouth-watering and tempered, yet so intense. The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese #11 just shyly speaks of white peach compote on the nose, nothing more. The palate is clear-cut. It flashes a steely slate tone before mollifying it with riper fruit and aromatic citrus, so you are undoubtedly aware of its natural colors. Launched in 2010 with the Anejo added in 2015, the Espolon tequilas have become stock standard in bars around the country. While they may not be universally considered great standalone tequilas, they are deemed solid values and perfectly good mixers. Master Distiller, Cirilo Oropeza makes Espolon in a small batch process from ‘hand-selected’ 100% Blue Weber agaves cooked for 18 to 20 hours prior to fermentation. Following a slow distillation, the Anejo is aged for at least a year in unused white oak barrels then finished in x-Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels for 2-3 months - which makes sense, as both ventures are owned by Campari. Although some find the Bourbon influence too much, you'll still find agave-derived notes of grilled pineapple and roasted banana, enriched by butterscotch, vanilla, cinnamon and gingery warmth. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose is rich without being aggressive, with big caramel and vanilla notes that hit the nose right at the start. The body engages right away, pushing that silky sweetness into some woody notes with a slight, agave-driven, vegetal edge. The finish is long and complex, hitting some racy red pepper notes as it begins, then punching up butterscotch and more vanilla syrup before a slow fade that brings the agave back to the forefront. None of this is particularly surprising, but it’s all on point and just about perfect for an anejo, proving again that, pound for pound, Espolon is one of the best bargains in the tequila business. - drinkhacker.com

...Nose is certainly aggressive. Faint agave, some butterscotch, and unusually aggressive baking spices. There’s the Turkey… The palate is…fine. It’s bold and flavorful, and I don’t tast many of any additives, but I’m missing that rich cooked agave taste and creamy mouthfeel a traditionally well-made tequila has. Finish is medium. More spice. Not enough cooked agave. This is a mixer at heart, not a sipper. It makes a killer Paloma, and is fine as a sessionable sipper with chips and salsa waiting for mediocre tex-mex food... Twenty-nine herbs and botanicals undergo maceration in alcohol before being integrated with the wine through a proprietary method. This blend includes wormwood, lemongrass, mint, thyme, rosemary, sage, bay leaves, lemon balm, orange peel and hibiscus flowers. The most coveted bottling in the Schrader portfolio, Old Sparky Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from a section of the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard that is planted on rich soils containing ancient marine sediment and an alluvial fan that provides excellent mineral deposits. It is a blend of only the best barrels from the vintage. Aged in 100% new Darnajou and Taransaud French oak barrels.

    Other Reviews....
A selection put together by winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Old Sparky is one of the true gems in the vintage, as well as a perfect wine. Thrilling black fruits, crème de cassis, tobacco, tapenade, and iron notes all emerge from the glass, and it's full-bodied and has a similar purity to the CCS release, with ultra-fine tannins and one hell of an incredible finish. Napa Valley Cabernet, or red wine for that matter, doesn't get any better. Give bottles 2-4 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following two decades or more.

A best-barrel selection made by Thomas Rivers Brown and bottled in magnums, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is truly great stuff. Full-bodied, rich, velvety and all-enveloping, it delivers near-endless waves of black cherries, red raspberries and complex but gentle spice notes. Long and mouthwatering on the finish, it seamlessly eliminates any gap between power and elegance, leaving scant possible reaction except Wow!

Dark red in colour with black tinged edges and a red to dark red hue. Spicy red currant and Mediterranean herb aromas are trailed by some earth and tobacco notes. Light to mid weight with plenty of savoury appeal and showing ample freshness, the palate features an elegant flavour profile of red currants, red cherries and earth over a back drop of dried herbs, tobacco and spice. Fine grained tannins and vibrant acidity. The mid length finish both energetic and rustic.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

    Other Reviews…..
Lives up to its name with a wild herbal, rustic vibe cruising between some pretty delicious red and dark fruits. Pockets of spice and earth enliven the palate, and the effect is mighty drinkable. Is that firm, dry tannic finish a nod to where the grape originates? Maybe. Drink by 2028.
