Lives up to its name with a wild herbal, rustic vibe cruising between some pretty delicious red and dark fruits. Pockets of spice and earth enliven the palate, and the effect is mighty drinkable. Is that firm, dry tannic finish a nod to where the grape originates? Maybe. Drink by 2028.

From Steve Sadlier's Nenagh Park Vineyard in Yarra Glen. Mostly destemmed and matured in seasoned French hogsheads and puncheons. Bright crimson purple. The richest and most concentrated of Rob Hall's single-vineyard pinots in '23. Aromas of dark cherry, wild herbs, licorice and rosebush lead onto the palate, which has good mid-palate density and pliant, balanced tannins. Finishes with good energy and persistence. Firm, powerful and impressive. There's been a resurgence in varietal cabernet franc wines of late, and this is an excellent example of why. Blackcurrant, cocoa and eucalyptus flavours feel both rock solid and bold in the mouth (in a positive way), leading to a dry, resounding finish. You have to enjoy tannin to go for this because there's plenty of it here, but in that context, it's very good. Drink by 2033.

The Brand family has a history that dates back to 1852, stretching over six generations. Their winemaking journey began when Eric Brand married Nancy Redman and purchased a vineyard block from the Redman family. The Brands Laira winery was established in 1965 with the first commercial release in 1966. In 1994 Brand’s Liara was sold but the family retained ownership of key vineyards from which they produced premium fruit to sell to other wineries.  In recent years fourth generation vigneron Sam Brand took the next step establishing Brand & Sons with initial releases receiving high critical acclaim.

Sourced from a selection of vineyards across Coonawarra, this label take’s it name from Eric Brand’s early career as a baker in the Riverland which he gave up to depart for a new life in Coonawarra. Maturation took place in a mix of new (25%) and second use French and American barrels.

Awarded an MW of wine in 2020, winemaker Duane Coates is by his own admission, a 'heart over head' winemaker. Inclined to make wine from almost any interesting parcel of fruit made available to him, he tends to make accountants wince. For Duane, making great wine is not about business decisions; it’s about curiosity, passion, and a little bit of folly. His wines marry Australia’s richness of fruit with the savouriness and complexity of the old world.

A rich, mouthfilling Cabernet that boasts tremendous power.

Johnnie Walker Red Label Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Older Bottling
    SCOTLAND
    $59. 99
    Bottle

An older release of the world's number one selling blended Scotch and the preferred choice of whisky lovers everywhere. Johnnie Walker Red Label is a full-flavoured spirit that is a blend of Highland malt and Lowland grain whiskies. Red Label was originally created in 1909 for the new Scotch drinker who was inclined to mix whisky with ice, water, soda or in a variety of cocktails. By widening the range of whiskies used in his father's Old Highland Whisky, Alexander Walker developed Red Label as a smoother and lighter alternative - this was a break from the traditional deeply flavoured, full bodied Scotch whiskies of the past and was considered a more approachable drink. By 1920, Johnnie Walker Red Label had become the first truly global drinks brand, sold in over 120 countries. In 1933, the company was granted a Royal Warrant to supply Scotch to King George V, and the company has remained an official purveyor to the British Royal Household ever since. In 1996, Johnnie Walker Red Label won the Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, having previously picked up Silver Medals over three consecutive years. It has also consistently garnered Gold and Grand Gold Medals at the Monde Selection Awards.

Tasting note: Brilliant, bright gold appearance. Aromas offer a peaty top note hovering over sweet, fat, oily grains. The palate possesses good concentration with the peat laced sweet grains and gentle spices contributing to a fat, rich, oily mouth feel. Aftertaste of vanilla and sweet cereals with the peat re-emerging. Technically faultless and an achievement given how much of this stuff is churned out. But this bottling (and they do vary) is lacking freshness being quite sweet and clunky throughout. In fact, it's almost a little out of balance. Some fresh oak required in the mix? 40% Alc./Vol.

Black Douglas 8 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (750ml) - Older Bottling
    SCOTLAND
    $99. 99

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.5%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

We estimate this to be a late 1990s/early 2000s bottling, curiously bottled (in Australia) at a lower alcohol than current bottlings at 37.5%, bloody taxman!

The Black Douglas is a tribute drink to the legendary warrior, Sir James Douglas. He died in battle against overwhelming Spanish forces, swinging his claymore and clutching a silver casket containing the heart of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. Aged and blended in Scotland, Black Douglas has won over many a dedicated Scotch drinker, with its simple, robust, full bodied character - not to mention its price. 37.5% alc./vol.

    2023 Viognier By Farr

    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%

Viognier by Farr is a blend of two vineyards. The first is the original house block planted in 1994, which has friable red soil over limestone leading to sandstone - similar soils to the Sangreal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay by Farr. The second vineyard is a younger planting of unknown clones in red ironstone soil. The Viognier is a difficult variety to manage, with the tendency to grow horizontally rather than vertically, being very thirsty and having a tendency to become sunburnt easily. This prompted winemaker Nick Farr to pick the fruit earlier in order to retain natural acidity while maintaining varietal character, creating a more delicate and refined wine.
Viognier is foot-stomped and left for two or more hours on its skins, to extract phenolics, flavour and texture. The fruit is then pressed, cooled and put straight into barrel with all solids for a natural fermentation. Malolactic conversion is encouraged with gentle stirring during the end of autumn. The wine is then racked, fined, filtered and bottled 11 months after harvest.

Teremana Small Batch Blanco Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Since launching in 2020, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s Teremana Tequilas have gradually been rolled out globally. A shipment has just landed in Australia. Many tequila fans are keen to try the range, especially since the Reposado was crowned Tequila of the Year at the USA Spirits Ratings in 2021. The result surprised sceptics who consider celebrity-affiliated brands lacking quality or substance. It also means you won't be pouring these down the dwayne!

Scoring 93 points, winning the title was no mean feat given that many other tequilas were in the running and the competition is hosted by a tough set of judges. Teremana Blanco wasn’t too far behind, picking up a bronze.

Says Dwayne Johnson, “The tequila that we make is of the Earth. Sustainability is something that is important to us at Teremana”. In fact, Johnson and the team focus on sustainability and people more than anything else. Partners, the Lopez Family, are third-generation agave growers and second-generation distillers in the highlands of Jalisco and will continue to oversee production. The collaboration has served free meals to over 35,000 frontline workers, supported the hospitality industry with their Guac on the Rock campaign, as well as contributed to numerous charities such as World Central Kitchen, Turning Tables, and Another Round Another Rally, totaling over one million dollars in donations. Teremana takes 100% of the agave fibers and turns them into natural compost used as an organic fertilizer for the agave fields. The distillery also uses a state-of-the-art water filtration system that cleans the water left over from production.

Reports have it that sales in early 2023 exceeded one million 9-litre cases annually. An Instagram post by Johnson stated that “Teremana Tequila has set new records in the spirits industry, and has become the BIGGEST LAUNCH OF ANY SPIRIT EVER”. Like them or not, that's an extraordinary achievement.

As for the tequila, it's a clear value buy in its category. At 40% the Blanco offers surprising intensity and convincing agave character on both the nose and palate. The mouthfeel also impresses, being nicely rounded and full with a briney, beeswax-like note competing with white pepper and sappy agave, trailing off minerally and dry with suggestions of grassy, green tropical fruits adding zest to the finish. A quality starting point for your next Margarita.

Other reviews... Owned by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, this crystalline tequila resounds with zesty bell pepper and poblano aromas. The light, crisp palate entwines lemon peel with gentle almond and marshmallow sweetness, finishing with white-pepper sparks. Mix in margaritas or palomas. 92 points - wineenthusiast.com

...The name means "spirit of the earth"--TERE from the Latin word for "earth" and MANA from the Polynesian word for "spirit." Grapefruit comes through first on the nose, with herbaceous agave, and lemon peel. The palate has an oily mouthfeel, with predominant grassy and mineral notes, along with light vanilla, lemon Pledge, and roasted bell peppers. The finish is clean and short, with Baker's chocolate, agave nectar and more zesty citrus. 85 points - distiller.com

The nose here is immediately a bit plain — vegetal, muddy, and a bit sweaty, though it’s at least short of off-putting. The palate opens up a bit, initially showing notes of white pepper and some lemon. There’s a gentle sweetness rolling through the body, but a funky, heavily earthy note — not really like agave but more like damp dirt — is never far away, invariably rushing back to meet you. The pungent nose is hard to shake throughout, eventually settling into a note more akin to green beans than fresh agave, muddying the entire experience. This is usable as a mixer only. - drinkhacker.com

Teremana Small Batch Reposado Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Tequila of the Year at the USA Spirits Ratings in 2021.

Teremana's Reposado rounds out and softens the spicy vivaciousness of the Blanco without compromising agave character. Vibrant, deep and textural, judicious barrel ageing has added a delectable honeyed glaze to the sappy, green pine and subdued peppercorn notes. There's substance enough to hold up to mixing, but the quality on offer means you can enjoy this as a standalone spirit. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Oddly, no aging information is provided, though we do know the spirit is rested in ex-bourbon barrels. Reposados usually find their aromatics tempered by barrel time, but this expression doesn’t let up on that funky, vegetal nose, though here more of a black pepper note comes through. The palate does show some of the sweetness one expects from a reposado, but not an overwhelming amount. Still, it’s enough to temper the heavy earthiness that the blanco shows, and as it develops in the glass, some butterscotch and lemon elements begin to dominate, giving the finish more of a welcome approachability. - drinkhacker.com

Guillaume Pouthier and his team have once again crafted one of Bordeaux's most unique and characterful wines. Revealing aromas of mulberries and raspberries mingled with notions of vine smoke, orange zest, rose petals and spices, the 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with a powerful, vibrant and complete mid-palate, concluding with a long, ethereal and mouthwateringly saline finish. Sensual, suave and seamless, its beautifully refined tannins are, analytically, more abundant than even those of the 2022 vintage, yet they are so brilliantly integrated as to be near-imperceptible. This blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot is crafted for longevity, though its refined structure will make it surprisingly approachable at an early age. It's maturing 70% in new oak barrels, 20% in 18-hectoliter foudres and 10% in amphorae. A creditable yield of 50 hectoliters per hectare represents a decided agronomic success in what was a challenging growing season. Drink 2025-2065.

Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Apr 27, 2024)

The 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is increasingly a wine of seamlessness. Whereas the various components were once easily discernible, today Carmes is most often a wine of total beauty. The 2023 is a bit shy, especially in its aromatics. In other words, a pretty big departure from so many other recent vintages that have been far showier at this stage. Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier explains that he plans to give the 2023 longer aging, around 24-26 months, so he approached vinification and the early part of aging in a more reductive style than in the past. As always, Les Carmes is marked by its strong presence of Cabernet Franc and use of whole clusters, but as mentioned above, those signatures are less immediately evident than they once were. Les Carmes has been one of Bordeaux's stars over the last few years. I can't wait to see how the 2023 turns out. Drink 2035-2073.

The 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion was picked September 11 to 25 with 60% whole bunch and more Cabernet Franc than usual. Aging was 70% in new barrels, 20% in 18-hectoliter foudres and 10% in amphorae. This offers plenty of dark berry fruit mixed with cedar and pinecones on the nose, very well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, and the acidity is very well-judged. Just a soupçon of white pepper appears toward the finish. This is a much more succinct Les Carmes than the 2022, but it’s extremely harmonious and characterful. Drink 2028-2048.

This is a fantastic wine and very, very exciting, with purity and brightness to the floral, spicy and blackberry notes. It’s full and deep with agility and weightless. You feel the greatness in this. The winemaker says this is more concentrated and structured than the 2022. Lightly salty. 60% whole-berry fermentation. 50% cabernet franc, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. From organically grown grapes.

As to the Grand Vin 2023 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, this beauty checks in as 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot that was fermented with 60% whole cluster, brought up in 70% new barrels, with a good portion in foudre and amphora. It has a deep ruby/purple hue and vibrant aromatics of cassis and black cherries as well as leafy tobacco, spring flowers, woodsmoke, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied, it stays tight and compact on the palate, with a lively spine of acidity, beautiful precision and focus, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and outstanding length. It’s incredibly elegant, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this gain mid-palate density over the course of its élevage. It’s going to be long-lived.

Extremely floral nose; peony, iris, rose, expressive and aromatic with black fruits too, liquorice, dark fruit, cedar, some black chocolate and coffee bitterness on the nose too. Smooth and supple, nicely weighted in the mouth, forward, grippy and bright with a soft chew - really quite polished and pristine. Seamlessly integrated with the acidity balancing the tannins and the ripe fruit with some mineral wet stone undercurrents and slight bitter liquorice and grapefruit skin on the finish. It’s a little serious, but certainly polished with a soft chew of strawberry and raspberry and stoney-edged tannins giving excellent terroir signature. Ripe, fresh, clean, fragrant, sleek and streamlined. It has a lovely style and lots of finesse from winemaker Guillaume Pouthier. Harvest 11-25 September, 60% whole bunch fermentation taking the alcohol down from 14.3% at picking to 13.5%. 3.62pH. Drink 2033 - 2048.

    Georgina Hindle - Decanter

Deep in color, the wine is equally deep, sporting nuances of blackberries, black cherries, flowers, blueberries, tar, herbs, and spices. On the palate, the wine is rich, full-bodied, supple, and deep. There is intensity, purity, length, and vibrancy. The wine is rich, and concentrated, yet, the cool part of the tasting is that the wine is also light on its feet. With all the obvious density, the wine never feels heavy. Although it is mouthcoating, its also elegant, leaving you with layers of crushed stones, herbs, and a wealth of ripe, sweet, dark fruits, with a touch of salty chocolate in the finish. The wine was made using 60% whole bunch clusters, blending 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, 13.5% ABV, pH 3.6. The wine is aging in a combination of 70% new, French oak, 20% foudres and 10% amphora. Picking took place September 11- September 23. Drink from 2025-2050.

Teremana Small Batch Anejo Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

2020 was a significant year for celebrity-affiliated releases and Teremana was one of the biggest of all. For the few who don't know, it's a new tequila brand backed by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The launch featured both a Blanco and Reposado with the Anejo following suit. Compared to its siblings, this is more restrained aromatically, the palate drier, spicier and livelier than expected for an Anejo - but no bad thing. Hints of butter-menthol cough lozenges mix with peppery warmth while the finish contributes a light oiliness, ending crisp and dry with a moderate agave character. Not exactly typical, so for those used to sweet, soft styles, Teremana's Reposado may be closer to the mark. Matured in x-whisky barrels. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The newest expression from the brand backed by Dwayne Johnson offers zesty jalapeño and vanilla aromas. Honey and butterscotch coat the palate, enlivened by bracing clove, cayenne and white pepper on the exit. The overall impression suggests a butter cookie rolled in spices. 93 points  - wineenthusiast.com

"The nose and palate are like a liquid chocolate orange, with dominant tangerine and satsuma notes along with milk chocolate. The palate is rich and toffee-like, but the roasted agave notes do shine through toward the back palate and with citrus peel and more chocolate in the finish." 88 points - distiller.com

Produced in Canelli, in the province of Asti in the Piedmont region in Italy’s north-west, this fairly new Vermouth brand is the brainchild of three drinks experts: Stefano di Dio, Oscar Quagliarini (the brand’s namesake who created the recipe for the vermouth) and Oreste Sconfienza, a vermuttista who’s been making Italian vermouth since the late 1950s.

Trebbiano di Romagna, a white variety from central Italy (selected for its neutrality) is used without alcoholic fortification, reportedly making this the driest vermouth on the market next to Martini Extra Dry. A fine proponent for the ultimate dry martini.

Beltion have done a nice job on this Italian classic, recreating a robust expression from an old family recipe that achieves a satisfying bittersweet balance. It’s very umami, a really nutty sake-like character about it, along with ginger, mint, preserved lemon and pear. It’s a light wine, but it certainly has gloss and peanutty richness, acidity has something of a spicy bite to it, white peppery texture, and the finish combines salinity and chamomile perfume with some green apple and kombucha tang, and very good length. It’s a difficult wine to describe, and while it may not be for everyone, I really enjoy its distinct personality. Drink 2024-2030.

‘Upper Yarra Valley Chardonnay from the highly esteemed Willowlake Vineyard (Gladysdale), a gentle north-facing slope grown on grey volcanic soils. Handpicked in late February; fruit was gently pressed to tank to settle for 24 hours. Following a light racking, juice is naturally fermented in close to 100% neutral French barriques. Rested on fine lees for 9 months with bâtonnage. MLF in some barrels. No additions beyond sulfur. Unfined/Unfiltered/Vegan.’
The Willowlake turns up the class a little bit more compared to the Electric Lines and is another fine vintage of perhaps my favourite Wheeler wine. It’s fragrant from the moment you unscrew the cap, with aromas that fill up the room. The first delightful scent is that of white flowers, followed by lemon, peach and some fresh honeysuckle. There’s a touch of creaminess, plus some nuts and smoke. The palate is splendid, with mellifluousness (try saying that after a few glasses) and vibrant fruit, plus heaps of acid to make it lively and fresh. While this is a great drop with some food, it’s a pleasure just sipping it slowly of an evening.

'Full Flight' is the final installment in Cardrona's Coming of Age series. Seven years in a marriage of specially selected ex-Oloroso Sherry butts and ex-Bourbon barrels delivers a fabulously rich experience at natural cask strength. Apparently Jim Murray is referring to a different batch below. The distillery explains, "For the Solera marriage we don’t distinguish. We have done a limited Single Cask release which was PX, but the Solera has both." There is lovely purity to this with the succulent dried fruits expressed in a juicy fashion, especially fresh, plump dried apricots and prunes overlaying the malt and vanillas. A relatively simple but very effective delivery that’s even better with water where the whisky really lands on its feet. 62.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill-filtered.

Other reviews... PX...!! It telegraphs the grape before you get within an inch of the glass. But the sweet fruit doesn't have all its own way... The first moment on the palate is so sweet . And salivating, too, especially when the malt starts to get amongst the action... I am not normally much of a fan of PX matured malt. But you have to give a nod of approval when something works well, as this does. 93 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

A 50th anniversary release nodding to the history of the house of Darroze. Each component represents a significant year for the family in terms of the distillery's development, while adding a character peculiar to each vintage. It begins in 1974, the year Francis Darroze founded his project. Fifty year old distillates from this vintage bestow complex aromas associated with lengthy aging and bring tannic structure as well as dried fruits and spice. 1982 and 1985 were two hot years and the Armagnacs included from these harvests add volume and breadth. 1994 distillates represent a turning point for the cellars with less use of toasted oak, resulting in brighter fruit notes. Finally, the inclusion of Armagnacs distilled in 2002 and 2011, being relatively young eaux-de-vie, complete the harmony by contributing the requisite freshness. Baco and Ugni Blanc grape varieties are included in the blend in almost identical proportions (45%) with a very small complement of Folle Blanche. Bottled at what is presumably natural strength, the beautiful rectangular wax-sealed decanter will serve to heighten what promises to be a very special brandy experience. 48.5% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Beautiful gold color, mahogany highlights. The nose is very expressive, offering delicate aromas of candied fruits (apricot, orange zest), fine spices (vanilla, cinnamon, liquorice), dried fruits (fig, almond) and lightly toasted bread. On the palate, the tannins are rich. We find the passion of a young Armagnac and the wisdom of a 50-year-old brandy. Lots of spices, leather, candied orange. An Armagnac of exquisite complexity and endless length in the mouth.

Deep yellow with a golden tinge. Intense aromas of very ripe tropical fruit, beeswax, honey and raisin are lifted by a strong mineral edge. Very fresh, rich and sweet on entry, then extremely light on its feet, with refined flavors of ripe citrus, mango, papaya, honey and saffron complicated by tangy botrytis. A very bright and focused Yquem, with lively acidity and a long, smooth, floral finish. Boasts impeccable balance and lovely precision. This terrific Yquem is very stylish but less massively opulent than vintages like 1989 and 1983.

MV6 clone, fermented in small batches with mix of cultured and wild yeast, maturation in French oak (new-6 yo) for 10 months. The vineyard at Smythes Creek, west of Ballarat, is on 'harsh' goldfields soil and at a decent elevation of 425m. It delivers a sinewy, mineral-edged pinot noir, a style increasingly associated with the Ballarat region. Red fruits inhabit the wine, redcurrant, sour cherry, cranberry with nettle, weed, forest floor. The fine herbal line is maintained on the palate. Made from Encruzado grapes. Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Enchanting pear and white peach aromas mix with red apple skin and wet stone notes. Delicious pear and red apple skin flavours carry ample textural volume with some peach and stony mineral elements lining the back half. Finishes dry and fresh with traces of salted almond interspersed throughout the mid length conclusion.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

    2022 Xanadu Stevens Road Chardonnay
    Margaret River, Western Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Stelvin

From an outstanding vintage in Margaret River, with fruit from Block 2 of the Stevens Road Vineyard, located on the Boodjidup Brook, about 3km from the winery. This mature, low-yielding vineyard consistently produces top-quality Chardonnay. Gingin clone fruit was handpicked on February 24th, whole-bunch pressed, and underwent 100% barrel fermentation in French oak (20% new) barrels. Wild fermentation was encouraged to add complexity and personality. The wine was lees stirred for nine months without malolactic fermentation before being bottled in November 2022.

This cutting-edge and finely detailed 2022 single vineyard Chardonnay Stevens Road was planted with the Gingin clone. It is delightful from the get-go with its nuanced melon and just-ripe peach aromas. Strong, flinty tones are all wrapped in a gentle, well-integrated oak cloak. Fantastic precision and focus follow. Its shape held long and tight through to a seamless finish with subtle notes of bacon fat. This is a benchmark Margaret River Chardonnay. Drink 2029 - 2038.

Angus Hughson - Antonio Galloni's Vinous

The 2022 season in Margaret River was warm and short, and the wines have been nutty, luxurious and richly flavored. Vineyard positioning impacts the way the wines taste, and this Xanadu Steven's Road vineyard is in a cooler pocket, just slightly to the southwest of Margaret River town. Winemaker Glenn Goodall deliberately prevents malolactic fermentation—it has become part of the house style—and this lends race and pace to the wines. So, this 2022 Stevens Road Chardonnay is spicy, nutty and electric and runs with an austere acid line. It courses through the tributaries of the fruit and enlivens the wine. This acidity can render the wines austere in their youth, but as older wines, they evolve into toasty, mineral, spicy iterations of their younger selves. Xanadu Chardonnays are exciting wines for the cellar. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2027 - 2037.

    2022 Xanadu Reserve Chardonnay

    $1380.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Stelvin

From an outstanding vintage in Margaret River, with fruit sourced entirely from the Lagan Estate, Xanadu's oldest Chardonnay vineyard, the low-yielding vines produce distinctive 'hen and chicken' bunches typical of the Gingin clone. Natural fermentation is encouraged to highlight the vineyard's unique character. The fruit was hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, followed by 100% barrel fermentation in select French oak (24% new). Wild yeasts were used to add complexity, and the wine was lees stirred during a nine-month maturation period without malolactic fermentation. Only the best barrels were chosen for the final blend, bottled in November 2022.

The 2022 Chardonnay Reserve is built to impress thanks to its rich, yet fine aromas of nectarine and white peach with strong flinty tones and lightly toasted oak in tow. Despite chalky acidity, there is a decadence here, and you can not help but be impressed by its sheer power. Long and strong with tangy acidity and impressive length, its best years are well down the track. Drink 2032 - 2040.

Angus Hughson - Antonio Galloni's Vinous

The 2022 Reserve Chardonnay is richer and more voluminous than the racy Steven's Road, and the wine exhibits a capacious mid-palate that tends to expand and widen as it progresses through to the long finish. This is a wine of profound complexity and length, yet it is steely, restrained and mineral in the extreme. Salivating acidity clinches the deal. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2027 - 2037.

The 2023 Péby-Faugères, 100% Merlot, is a powerful, explosive wine. Inky dark fruit, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice, truffle and sweet scents of new French oak soar out of the glass. In 2023, Péby-Faugères offers a beguiling mix of dense fruit, captivating inner sweetness and bright acids. The aromatics aren't totally focused just yet, but there is potential here. Tasted two times. Drink 2030-2048.

An eye-opener. This really takes off at the end, with blackberry, tapenade, chocolate powder and cedar. It’s full-bodied and tight with solid tannins that are fine and less velvety than previous vintages. Less new wood than in the past. Crunchy. 100% merlot.

The flagship from this brilliant estate, the 2023 Château Péby Faugères comes from the eastern side of the appellation and is all Merlot, raised in plenty of new barrels. Its deep purple hue is followed by powerful aromatics of red and blue fruits, graphite, candied violets, and spicy wood. With full-bodied richness, a plush, expressive, opulent style, and gorgeous tannins, it certainly makes the most of the vintage and is for those who love ripe, seamless, sexy wines that deliver incredible pleasure.

Smoke, truffle, crushed rocks, licorice, chocolate, black cherries, espresso, and blackberries are everywhere here, in the nose, and on the palate. The wine is concentrated, lush, creamy, polished, dark, and deep. One of the more opulent wines of the vintage, the finish lingers with its layers of fruit. The amount of oak used used in the aging process has declined, which is a good thing here, allowing the fruit to show more purity, and freshness. The wine is produced from 100% old vine Merlot. Harvesting took place September 8. Drink from 2029-2050.

This Caribbean rum cask matured whisky started out in x-Bourbon casks before being finished in freshly emptied Caribbean Rum casks. One in a fairly long (and possibly ongoing) line of G&M Strathislas that have been released over the last few decades. It should be noted that we've not received any recent editions, which may indicate stocks are running low at Gordon & Macphail, or that they're reserving their remaining liquid for natural strength single cask expressions. This particular Strathisla was decanted from barrels in 2007, so the tasting notes below are indicative only, however we wouldn't expect dramatic variation between two compositions from the same vintage and bottler. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... [1963/2005 bottling tasted] Colour; amber. Nose: it’s a rather different story. This one starts more on bananas flambéed, coconuts (Malibu) and a beautiful oakiness. Also quite some game, ham, mint sauce (yeah we tried this one in the UK). Gets more similar to the 40yo after a moment but maybe a tad more complex. We have the same kinds of wild mushroom. Mouth: more classic, maybe a little woodier. Dried bananas, crystallised apricots. Loses a little steam with time but never gets weak. Finish: quite long, much spicier than before, getting very peppery. In short, another great old Strathisla, somewhat in the style of an old cognac. Too bad the middle was slightly on the slow side. 89 points - whiskyfun.com

While not well-known in Australia, overseas Speyburn has long been considered one of the better values in single malt Scotch. The tenner comes matured in both x-Bourbon and x-Sherry casks and offers a light to medium-bodied dram with a friendly fruity-cereal character. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A sweet, creamy dram matured mainly in bourbon casks and some sherry casks. The nose has honey, vanilla, flaked coconut, lemon biscuits, and apple Danish pastries. Vanilla fudge, lemon bonbons, white chocolate, toffee, sweet oak, and cracked peppercorns continue the sweet flavor profile as it melts into butterscotch sauce and crème brûlée at the swallow, with vanilla seeds on the finish It’s impossible not to like it. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Tasting it fresh in 2023, we find a whisky with an outsized nose of fresh granary notes, showing as a bit leathery at times, with the lightest touch of smoke evoking aromas of smoldering underbrush. No fruit, no real sweetness, just the essence of cereal. The palate kicks in with more to offer, though the grain-heavy backbone is never out of focus. Well-roasted cereal, almost overcooked at times, find room for some brighter notes of applesauce, a squeeze of lemon peel, and some sugary shortbread character. Uncomplicated as it develops, the finish melds sweetness with cereal notes, eventually developing into something resembling sweetcorn, served on vanilla wafers. That vaguely smoky quality lingers, however, keeping things in a savory check. All told I am distinctly less enamored with Speyburn 10 today than I was a decade ago, though there is still no arguing with the extreme — and perhaps unmatched — value it offers in single malt Scotch. - drinkhacker.com
