Brilliant very pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated pear, red apple and musk scents stream out of the glass with some honeysuckle and spice notes also evident. Luscious pear and red apple fruits drive the palate with notions of musk and citrus sitting in the background. Slippery textured, it has refreshing acidity which lends a brisk feel to the finish.

As is always the case with these 'Secret Signatorys', Macallan isn't stated on the label, however the ever-reputable whiskyfun.com have reviewed bottlings from the same "M" series and their classification and tasting compass points firmly towards Edrington's darling. Matured for 18 years in a first-fill sherry butt (presumably oloroso), this promises all those lovely rich aromas and flavours of dark fruits, chocolate, manuka honey and crème brulee that sherry heads consistently seek out. Few tasting notes are available on this batch, but hopefully that list extends to classic Macallan descriptors like orange marmalade, dried figs, cigars and no sulphur! Judging by reviews for other (M)s, it should be pretty darn good. Signatory's already reasonable asking price is made all the more sweet by direct import pricing. We've received a small share of the 658 numbered bottles produced, un-chillfiltered. 58.4% Alc./Vol.

Fresh and elegant with juicy red to blue fruits.
Bleasdale has been growing Malbec since the late 1800’s and produced the regions first Malbec table wine in 1961. Today they are one of the leading exponents of this variety. The fruit for their Generations Malbec was sourced from three estate vineyard blocks and two specialist growers with maturation taking place in a mix of new (5%) and seasoned French oak puncheons for a period of 12 months.
Pitch black heart with a dark purple black tinged hue. Fragrant blueberry, plum and liquorice scents flood the nostrils followed by some violet, spicy vanillin cedar, fresh herb and earth notes. Juicy blueberry, plum and red liquorice fruits carry a refined feel across the palate. Fine grained, slightly dusty tannins with infusions of fresh herbs, earth and spicy vanillin cedar unfolding across the back half. Medium bodied it finishes fresh and elegant.

This is just hitting its straps. Easy to get into, as it offers all the archetypal flavours and more. Appealing fresh tobacco and warm bitumen aromas come through, while flavours of dark plums and black cherries are doused in licorice, woodsy spices and choc-mint. It’s a fuller-bodied but not big wine. There’s a certain restraint and elegance to this, and that’s a word not often used for this bolshie variety, such is the Bleasdale way. This has youth on its side so it’s bright and easy. In time it will garner more complexity. Can you wait? Drink by 2040.

A power pack Grenache bursting with ripe succulent fruit which is backed by a muscular tannin structure.
Named after the Greek God of the Southerly wind, Notus. After basking in the warm summer climate of the Barossa Valley the vines welcome the arrival of the cooling Southerly wind which marks the transition from summer to autumn and so coincides with the last stage in the ripening process of Grenache.
Fruit was sourced from vines 60 to 96 years in age with 25% whole bunch included in the ferment and maturation taking place in large oak barrels for 6 months.
Deep dark red black tinged core with a dark red hue. Dark raspberry and liquorice aromas infused with graphite and pepper like notes sail through the nostrils. Some ripe cherry and vanillin spice notes are also evident. Rich and juicy, the palate is bursting with dark raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits that are concentrated, vibrant and powerful. Notions of crushed rock, vanillin spice and pepper underpin the seductive layers of fruit. Muscular tannin structure with a long, succulent pepper laced finish.

Shy on the nose, sawdust and carpenter's workshop holding back the honey and fruits; needs time to open up, breaking through on the palate with dense spiced orange cake amid a flurry of spices and honey. Other reviews... We believe that Glen Elgin should retain its place among the great historic malts, rather than sinking to the depths of the latest loch. In our view and perhaps in an ideal world, it's the best malts that should rise to the top — and that has absolutely nothing to do with marketing budgets or tequila finishes. And let’s not even mention the ubiquitous mizunara.... Colour: full gold. Nose: here come the roasted peanuts, charred wood, malt and walnut liqueur. This is much more classic than the previous ones, and we’re rather delighted by that. With water: quality grey pepper and a few old papers. We do love the scent of old papers. Mouth (neat): almost an onslaught of spices and citrus—green pepper, zest, bitter orange and clove. Classic and modern at the same time, so that’s spot on. With water: it improves further still, on orange, coriander and shochu. White pepper and yellow curry in the aftertaste, the cask clearly having been rather active. Finish: long, more peppery, spicier still. Comments: super stuff, just very oak-driven, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. 83 points - whiskyfun.com

One of the older Ardnas' to come our way. The mineral-maritime note so familiar and loved in younger bottlings is barely diminished by age: Oyster shells, wet rocks, a touch of potpourri, the peat oily and understated, the intensity dropping several notches after exposure. Lashings of the same on the tongue with a potent salted-malt drive that includes flashes of baked apple, pepper and smoked dark chocolate. The oils build and melt into the finish giving this a seamlessness that belies its youth. A slightly more malt-focussed expression, perhaps, though the tongue tingling coastal vibrancy is very much intact, particularly at the finish. 207 bottles from a first-fill bourbon barrel. 59% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. A new charred hogshead has left its mark, both in colour saturation and aroma; Yet, Nevis' make shines through - elderflower and nectarine piercing the rich wood, becoming more salient with every pass. A similar story on the palate; initially a busy noise of oak and malt until the brightness of the exotic fruits and florals rise, gaining succulence and completely captivating the finish. Other reviews... In theory, Ben Nevis with its heft should be able to handle heavy char… Colour: dark amber. Nose: it’s got a recharred sherry feel to it, and everything clicks into place with precision – it’s simple (and simplicity is a virtue here) and compact (same comment), taking us close to a tin of assorted caramels from Rowntree Mackintosh. Remember those? For now the distillate stays a little shy, though water might coax it out. With water: no, still leaning on fresh wood and one can’t deny a hint of young bourbon about it. Mouth (neat): oh this is good! Much livelier than expected, all on oranges, pepper, salt and bitter almonds. Hints of cedarwood, pencil shavings etc., as expected. Excellent. With water: the distillate unfurls, though the whole remains pleasingly dry and bitter, the Ben Nevis DNA taking over once more. Finish: long and very dry. Cold black tea and pepper. Comments: there’s an old amontillado edge at the end, which is amusing. And very good of course – it’s from a cracking house. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

'Ruadh Maor' is the name Glenturret use for their peated distillate. This one spent three years finishing in new charred oak. A mild roasted nuttiness to the nose, then definitively sweet and sooty in later sniffs with trace fruitiness and a dried herbal note contributing freshness. Echoes on the palate, riddled with delicious peat reek, accentuating with sweet wood smoke, chimney soot and salted vanilla completing the profile. Lively citrus and salinity pick up the finish. Finished in a first-fill Bourbon cask. Very pure and enticing in its drier styled bouquet that suggests hay bails, cocoa and an assortment of nuts, transitioning to hints of ripe plums and apples. A genuine softie on the palate, impeccably balanced, defying its natural strength, still not without depth. Flavours of water biscuits, poached orchard fruits (pears and apples), cocoa and old leather are easily neutralised with water, so dilute cautiously. 197 bottles. 50.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Nose: very much in the same vein, only slightly rounder, with a little more soft honey (acacia) and peanut oil, plus touches of old paper, which we’re rather fond of. With water: the Williams pear comes through nicely. Mouth (neat): a fruit salad supercharged with eau-de-vie made from the same fruits. Not sure if that makes sense, but there you are. Finished in a first fill American oak oloroso hogshead for four years. As though a dollop of fresh honey has been dropped in your glass, the opening sniffs nothing short of superb. Dries after air contact, accenting citrus blossom and faint curaçao. What a bright and engaging oloroso cask this is! The intense honey-malt drive combined with a succulent dried fruit character pops at mid palate. Mouthfilling and plush, the malt keeps up with the sherry (just), leaving Granita cheesecake with a wee drizzle of Grand Marnier to finish. Ripe Meyer lemons and toasty oak with water. Other reviews... May I take this opportunity to remind you that when it comes to sherry casks, American oak is the rule and European oak the exception. Indeed, it’s rather counterintuitive. Colour: full gold. Nose: very similar aromatic territory, though here we’re leaning more towards dried and candied fruits, with subtler spices and a lovely soft liquorice. Splendid orange liqueur with honey, dried figs, white nougat, sweet wine like a muscat (a sweet one, muscat isn’t always sweet) or late-harvest gewurztraminer… In fact, it’s an extremely friendly nose. With water: little change, it just becomes even more approachable. Mouth (neat): a fantastic cocktail of honeyed liqueurs, with a clear, direct, irresistible side. I believe this baby could replace honey in your yoghurts, pastries, tisanes, over your pancakes etc. For a wee kick that instantly lifts the spirit and soothes your worries and fits of rage. Please don’t quote me to your local health authorities. With water: it joins its 2013 sibling in terms of style. Finish: long, gentle, honeyed, extremely moreish. Engaging from the outset with aromas of dark chocolate, liqueur cherry, a little earth, subtle leathery notes, and rich prune-like characters. It seems to be just entering a tertiary stage, and it appears to have plenty of time ahead of it, as you’d expect from this vintage. Drink 2025-2035.

Not often one comes across a new release red with this amount of time under its belt, especially at a price like this. 1926 is the year that the **** family purchased the estate. A mature red with good complexity, the colour is a dark maroon. Time has allowed the oak to merge impeccably and the nose gives us notes of tobacco leaves, dried herbs, plums and smoked meats. As we move to the palate we see more soy, beefstock and vegemite characters. There is fine balance and very good length, finishing with soft, furry tannins. Still five to eight years of pleasure ahead of it, it has matured superbly and should continue to do so.

Why Whisky Drinkers Should Drink More Sherry.

Originally, the Scots relied solely on oak trees from the forests of England to create casks and mature their whiskies. But at some point, Scotch whisky distilleries needed to find an alternative source for their oak as their markets expanded. As it happened, Sherry was in abundance and highly fashionable with the English drinking public, who consumed roughly 30% of the world's total Sherry production. So Sherry casks seemed a logical alternative for the Scots. But transportation of Sherry-filled casks was a costly and laborious process (usually done by horse and cart), and understandably, it wasn't viable for the Spanish to re-acquire the barrels once emptied. Fast forward to current times and the opposite has occurred as the worldwide demand for Spanish Sherry has dramatically declined. This has turned the Scotch whisky industry on its head, with fewer Sherry barrels becoming available.
What partly makes Spanish Sherry barrels so special is the oak itself, Quercus Robur, with the Spanish trees cut down at 60 to 70 years of age. Research has shown that tannins in the wood act as a catalyst that aids oxidation during the maturation period, hence being a highly desirable commodity in malt whisky production. The old Spanish timbers contain approximately ten times more tannin than the 30 to 40 year-old Quercus Alba, or American White Oak that is used to make barrels for the maturation of Bourbon whiskey. The deep colour and distinct rich, fruity / citrus peel flavours (sometimes marmalade-like) that ex-Sherry casks can impart are more obvious reasons for their value and preference by the Scots.

The present day process for acquiring Sherry barrels into Scotland is unusual, a result of the fundamentals of supply and demand. Sherry houses are commissioned to produce Sherry for the sole purpose of selling what they would consider a 'by-product' - essentially a first-fill barrel with a life expectancy of two fills. The process is as follows:
1. Trees are purchased from Northern Spain, allowing two years after felling and being left in the open for natural chemicals in the wood to interact and for the moisture content to drop.?
2. The wood is commissioned for cooperage by Whisky producers.
3. Sherry (usually Oloroso) must then be 'leased' by the Whisky producer for a minimum of two years in order to season the barrel.

In comparison, the average price of filling a Bourbon cask is $45 compared to an astounding $300 per fill for the Sherry; also bear in mind that the usual life expectancy for Bourbon barrels is three fills as opposed to two for Sherry.'They literally have us over a barrel,' quips past master distiller at Macallan David Robertson.

Enter again the Scots, looking for a bargain! For some time now, the Scots have been seeking alternatives to Sherry casks. Charles MacLean explains how American ex-bourbon casks came to dominate the present industry. In this book “Scotch Whisky, a Liquid History”, he describes how “In 1936, the cooper’s unions in the US brokered a deal with [American] whisky makers which insisted that Bourbon must be filled into new oak, so there was suddenly a large surplus of cheap American barrels. These started to arrive into Scotland in 1946, either intact or broken down into ‘shooks’ of staves and reassembled into traditional Scotch (200L) hogsheads...The whisky industry thus kept pace with demand by embracing changes in production methods which were compatible with efficiency and productivity.” Output increased exponentially (this in turn led to oversupply problems in the next decade).

100% Sherry cask matured whiskies are now rare. Unless whisky lovers take up drinking Sherry themselves, it’s not hard to envisage that in the near future, supply and demand will send prices skyward. Expect to be paying much, much more for these historical curios in the years to come - if you can find them at all.

Well-received by fans of traditional, dark and punchy styles, the heavy pot-still influence from Guyana is said to be significant. True to the brand's provenance, the rum comes bottled at 54.5% (Navy Proof), similar to that served on the 31st day of July 1970 when the Admiralty discontinued its daily issue of rum to Ships’ Companies, ending the longest tradition in seafaring history.

It gives bold aromas of fresh, lithe berries, keeping the gin within the spirit range of alcohol, and bottling at 38% has helped to not only make sure the gin isn't lost with the grapes but has helped to amplify the fresher aspects of the grapes themselves. Brazen fresh raspberries, in particular, command the aroma of the gin. The more spice-forward botanicals of the Triple Juniper gin come to the forefront. On the palate, the raspberry drops off a little to make space for deeper red fruits, jammy strawberry, and plums. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.

After a difficult 2022 vintage, the 20th harvest of Il Frappato from Arianna Occhipinti, 2023, is a staggeringly beautiful wine. It’s a stop-and-stare phenomenon: I sat tasting it for half an hour and between all the adjectives, what really mattered was that I was almost ready to down tools and start drinking my way through the bottle at 2pm on a Monday. Yes, there is blood orange and cranberry, bitter cherries, the smell of rose petals after rain and some elusive spice, but what is more important is that I suddenly wanted to own cases of this wine. It’s an ambassador for Sicily, as vivid, arresting and confusing as the whole ancient island, and a reminder to resist the cliches. This is vigour, not lassitude; energy, not managed decay. It’s unmissable; a wine that sparks the kind of joy wine lovers crave. Drink 2026-2031.

The 2022 Barbaresco is a pretty rich, heady wine. Dark cherry/plum fruit, cloves, licorice and mocha build as the 2022 shows off its considerable depth. This is one of the few 2022s that is quite resonant texturally. The aromatics could be more lifted and the tannins could use a bit more polish, but those qualities were next to impossible to come by in 2022. The inclusion of some juice from Riserva lots is a great help. All things considered, this is a stellar showing. Drink 2027-2034.

A relatively early harvest saw Produttori del Barbaresco's grapes brought in between 22 September and 3 October. The cooperative decided to reduce the production of its Riserva crus, using approximately 25%-30% of those grapes to bring greater balance to this flagship wine. It is deep, vibrant ruby in hue and just as lively on the nose. Dark currants tangle with brushwood and liquorice root. The palate is rambunctious, full of vigour, racing acidity and earth-tinged wild berries. The alcohol packs a punch but is matched by the fruit concentration and confident structure. Crisp, dry tannins will keep this ticking along. Drink 2026-2038.

Due to the limited nature of Sierra Negra agaves, this mezcal was originally only procurable in Mexico. A single batch was finally exported in 2018 witha small-scale outturn ongoing. Often harvested from remote mountain areas, usually by hand, the variety takes about 25 years to mature making it a scarce resource. Once popular, it's no longer commonly used, partly due to over-harvesting and an extremely slow growth rate. Rey Campero's expression has been variously described, one taster noting "...all brine and smoke - like an Ardbeg 10 year old (for whisky enthusiasts)", with complex aromatics and intense flavours. 49.3% Alc./Vol.

The “Never Never” label speaks of the Australian bush and its people, but also something otherworldly. Established in 2016, the aim of the project is “not just to create delicious spirits, but to make the most flavoursome spirits on the market.” Combining the talents of George Georgiadis, Sean Baxter and Tim Boast, their Triple Juniper gin employs air-freighted berries for maximum freshness. The juniper is treated in three distinct ways, partially steeped, partially in the pot and partially in the vapour. The aim is to capture both the bright and the earthy qualities, and to balance the massive juniper input, a few other botanicals are used: Australian coriander provides brighter citrus and less earthiness than its English or Indian counterparts. A predominate fresh lemon citrus influence with a touch of fresh lime and liquorice adds lift over a root base of angelica and orris. Native pepperberry provides a balancing, savoury element without the heavy menthol finish of traditional peppers. Finally a hint of cinnamon hits just the right amount of warmth.

The method of extracting juniper through maceration and multiple distillation styles allows the gin to bring forward the full spectrum of juniper flavours. Pulling out pine in its fresh, green profile and richer, woodier, sappier qualities. Juniper also has an array of volatile oils that make up its flavour, including ginger, dusky rose, and citrus oil. Within this gin, the core juniper botanical brings plenty of complexity. On entry, viscous, chewy and rounded, then more of a peaches and cream profile with a fine fruit-oak balance. The sugars retreat past mid palate, rich oils and hints of curacao taking their place as three decades of oak unravel. Ends in a rush of tongue-coating oils and powdery tannins. Mere years away from its peak, or just past it is debatable, regardless, this exquisite, slow-burn and very Bourbonesque grain delivers serious body, length and texture. Deep dark red colour with black toned edges and a bright red hue. Expressive red to dark raspberry and red liquorice aromas intermingle with ripe red cherry, scorched earth and peppered herb notes. Rich and succulent, the mid weighted palate is bursting with moreish red to dak raspberry, liquorice and ripe cherry fruits. Fresh, juicy acidity with the pepper infused back drop detailed with earthy graphite and spicy dried herb elements. This is another Grenache from the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and it was made in a largely similar way to the other wines in the portfolio. In this case, it was aged in a mix of French oak puncheons and the smaller French oak hogsheads, so the oak uptake is a little more obvious but still not to the point of being overt. It has that slightly dusty, dried herb and spicy influence over the bright red fruits that emerge from this region. It’s seamless, it’s smooth, and there’s a velvety succulence about it, while that slightly dry savoury finish completes and balances a terrific wine. Drink 2025-2035.

An elite, top-tier producer, famously named the 2025 Halliday Winery of the Year, Giant Steps' focus on single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay has consistently earned them rave reviews for elegance, purity and finesse. That same care and attention to detail has been applied in making an artisanal Vermouth. Hand harvested, certified organic Viognier grapes, whole bunch pressed, wild fermented in French oak and blended with a host of botanicals macerated separately in a distillate of the mother wine (with help of Four Pillars Distillery). Two styles of Vermouth are produced, but the Semi-Dry White is considered the best. Clean, crisp and refreshing, it resonates winemaking skill, being more akin to a structured dry white than many traditional European vermouths. Measured against bar standards like Noilly Prat, it's lighter, more elegant and fresher, accenting notes of lemon and lime zest, thyme and dried apricots, with a cooling character that finishes with a fine-tuned herbal bitterness; gentian, dried orange peel tang and hints of flor sherry. The discount is of the likes we've never seen in its category - and we may never see again. The quality means you can embrace it as a standalone drink, on the rocks with a twist of orange, or use it to create superb Martinis and modern cocktails like a white Negroni, Boulevardier or Aperol Spritz. Just one caveat - Vermouth doesn't last forever, so once opened, remember to stash it in the fridge to maintain maximum freshness. Batch 04/18 tasted.
Other reviews... a very accomplished and unique product in the range of vermouth’s available, and a thoughtful evolution on the original recipe that suits the current vogue for a grown-ups aperitif...The white version I became quite smitten with. Its like summer in a glass. On the nose its a lovely honeycomb aroma (reminded me of a ripe Marsanne wine actually). It is fuller on the palette than its sister, with a dry finish and you get a hint of citrus, a note of light bitterness at the end, very nicely integrated. It is not floral or spicy like Noilly Prat and is more akin to Dolin perhaps in weight + intensity of flavours. This makes a terrific Martini. If you like yours not so astringent, then this is ideal. You don’t need a dash of Orange Bitters and the semi sweetness rounds out of the cocktail and definitely doesn’t dominate several of the gins I tried. I used about 5ml to 10ml to be safe in the 60ml cocktail and that was plenty. Less is more. Highly recommended. - martiniwhisperer.com
Notes from the producers... Vermouth has a long and surreal history, on the fringes of apothecary, art and medicine. This vermouth has small and exacting measures of botanicals, including wormwood, juniper, gentian, bay leaf, Cinchona bark, Seville orange, Meyer lemons, blood orange, green tea, Timor Pepper, Mandarin, native limes, cumquats and orris root (and many more!). Most of the botanicals were grown on our Yarra Valley Vineyards. The medieval treatise ‘Causes & Cures’ recorded the beneficial and restorative powers of all known herbs and spices.

As possibly the most consistent of the five First Growth properties, Chateau Latour is held in incredibly high esteem in the wine community. And while there have been rightfully some legendary wines made at this estate over their journey, since the purchase of the property by French billionaire François Pinault in 1993 the wines have been taken to an entirely new level. The next key step was to take greater ownership of their wine's release and distribution, moving away from wine futures following the 2011 vintage, and now Chateau Latour release wines only when they feel they are at the start of their drinking window.

The 2019 Latour is a profound wine in the making, and it will surely emerge as one of the most long-lived wines of the vintage, as well as one of the greatest. Unwinding in the glass with scents of rich cassis fruit, English walnuts, cigar wrapper, black truffle, loamy soil and violets, it’s full-bodied, layered and muscular, with huge depth at the core, ripe tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, seemingly interminable finish. Checking in at 14.1% alcohol, this prodigious Latour will require two decades to hit its stride, but it will be more than worth the wait. Drink 2036-2070.

The 2019 Latour is every bit as impressive as it has always been. Silky and caressing on the palate, with exceptional balance, the 2019 has so much going on. Dark red fruit, new leather, spice and a kick of blood orange are some of the notes that build in the glass, but ultimately the 2019 impresses most with its textural finesse. There was a bit of rain during harvest, but that does not appear to have been much of an issue. The 2019 is a quintessentially modern Latour, a wine that deftly marries power with elegance. Yields came in at 45 hectoliters per hectare, quite a bit higher than the long-term average of 34 hectoliters per hectare. Drink 2029-2069.

Classic Pauillac darker currants, smoky tobacco, spicy wood, damp earth, and graphite all define the 2019 Château Latour, a ripe and approachable Latour that has more accessibility than many vintages while still possessing quintessential Latour character and depth. Blended from 92.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and aged 18 months in new French oak, it's medium to full-bodied with a round, layered mouthfeel, beautiful, almost velvety tannins, and a tremendous finish. I'd happily drink a bottle today (don't tell anyone), yet it's going to benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and keep for 50 years or more in fine form. Drink 2031-2081.

Dark blackcurrants with smokey tobacco, liquorice and slate. Cool straight away, fresh but so perfectly mouthfilling, not sweet like 2020, this is more cooling and fresh, blue fruit, black cherry, fleshy like fruit skin texture. Dark, I love the 2019s because they're more controlled and serious but so nuanced. To me this is how a great Pauillac can taste, serious, deep, classic Cabernet markers, lots of minerality in the flint and stoney aspects, strong tannins and a powerful, muscular structure with minty sides. An amazing Pauillac, this is really my style. Still so full of concentration and life, this will last forever. Drink 2030-2060.

Composed of 92.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7.5% Merlot, the 2019 Latour is deep garnet-purple in color. It comes barreling out of the glass with powerful notes of blackcurrant jelly, blackberry pie, and plum preserves, followed by suggestions of pencil shavings, cast-iron pan, and charcoal. The medium to full-bodied palate is exquisitely constructed with a myriad of very fine layers, supported by ripe, grainy tannins and beautiful tension, finishing epically long and mineral-laced. It's still very tightly wound and will require at least 5 to 7 more years in cellar, then should age gracefully for a good 50-years+.

All that regal, ripe, sweet, fruit and crushed gravel stick with you almost seamlessly for more than 50 seconds until you reach the endnote with its salty, mineral-driven kick in the endnote. This is a fabulous Latour that will age for decades. The wine was made from a blend of 92.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7.5% Merlot, 14.1% ABV. The Grand Vin was produced from only 36% of the harvest. 2023 Domaine Laurent Tribut Chablis

When Laurent Tribut married Marie-Clotilde Dauvissat he joined one of Chablis' most famous winemaking families. René Dauvissat, Marie's father, gave the couple parcels of excellent sited Village Chablis and Premier Cru to establish Domaine Tribut. The small Domaine now has 7 hectares of vineyards. The Village Chablis is predominantly situated on Kimmeridgian soils adjacent to the Dauvissat vineyards. Laurent, a humble and good-natured vigneron, prefers the vineyards to be farmed as naturally as possible with a minimum of treatments and organic philosophies. Harvesting is always done by hand. The wines are fermented exclusively en cuve (in tank) and racked into barrel for aging. Laurent typically only buys new oak if he needs to replace old barrels, some of which are 50 years old. With his retirement in 2019 Laurent's children Solonge, Adeline and Gabriel have now taken the helm, each specialising in different aspects of the business.
The Tribut Chablis share many stylistic similarities with their famous relatives. The wines offer immediate appeal with a rich texture and lovely lemony fruit notes, white spice and vibrant underlying minerality; yet are deeply concentrated with dense though not heavy structures, that age and develop into very complex wines. Compared to Dauvissat they have a little extra generosity. In a lot of ways, they share more in common with the classic White Burgundy appellations of the Cote de Beaune than Chablis.

This vibrant and dynamic village Chablis explodes with aromas of lime peel, passion fruit and greengage plums adorned with acacia blossoms and chalky minerality. The feel is racy and bright, but there is substance here as well. This wine will be crisp and approachable on release but will profit from mid-term ageing in the cellar. Fruit is from parcels at Courgis and Poinchy, with a bit from the Beauroy and Forêts premiers crus. Fermentation in tank is followed by six months in cask before bottling. Drink 2028-2045.

Given they are under the same ownership of the Guinaudau family, Chateau Grand Village is often referred to as Chateau Lafleur’s second vineyard. The estate has been owned by the Guinaudau’s relatives for hundreds of years, however it was not until the year 2000 that they began to produce wine themselves from the property. Situated on the edge of the Fronsac region and classified as Bordeaux Superieur, the vineyard is planted to 79% Merlot and 21% Bouchets (Cabernet Franc). The terroir is similar to Saint Emilion with its mix of calcisol going down a foot or so to a bedrock mostly made up of asteria limestone. At Grand Village, they practice many of the same techniques employed at Lafleur, including pruning and de-budding adapted to each vine plant, crop thinning in summer and de-leafing. The grapes are picked by hand, followed by very careful sorting and selection. Grand Village also produces a white wine from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (85%) and Semillon (15%), from a 5 acre plot.

Aromas of cassis, blueberries, dark wild berries and flowers introduce the 2023 Grand Village, a medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy wine with a deep core of fruit that's framed by powdery tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. As readers may remember, Grand Village is one of the best values in Bordeaux, and this year, it exceeds expectations. It's one of the sleepers of the vintage. This is a blend of 91% Merlot (picked between the 11th and 14th of September) and 9% Cabernet Franc (picked on the 20th of September). Drink 2025-2045.

The 2023 Grand Village is a very beautiful wine. Supple and open-knit, with terrific fruit purity, the 2023 has a lot to offer. Crushed flowers, mint, red-toned fruit, blood orange and mocha grace the palate. Brisk acids lift the nuanced finish. Drink 2025-2030.

Based on 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc from deeper, clay soils, the ruby/plum-hued 2023 Château Grand Village spent a year in 30% new French oak before bottling. It tastes like a mini Pomerol with its ripe, juicy black cherries, damp earth, roasted herbs, and graphite. It's medium-bodied and has a pure, focused, layered mouthfeel and a great finish. Drink 2026-2038.

Very fragrant and floral expression on the nose, really open and forward. Smooth and full of bright energy with savoury, herbal strawberry and red cherry notes. Great texture, fresh and focused. This has good structure in terms of fleshy tannins but with a cool, bite to the quite high acidity which keeps it lifted. Nice balance, precision and drinkability with a salty, chalky, graphite finish. I like this a lot. Clean, grippy, well balanced. Really well made. Drink 2027-2037.
