Rey Campero Sierra Negra Mezcal (700ml)
Due to the limited nature of Sierra Negra agaves, this mezcal was originally only procurable in Mexico. A single batch was finally exported in 2018 witha small-scale outturn ongoing. Often harvested from remote mountain areas, usually by hand, the variety takes about 25 years to mature making it a scarce resource. Once popular, it's no longer commonly used, partly due to over-harvesting and an extremely slow growth rate. Rey Campero's expression has been variously described, one taster noting "...all brine and smoke - like an Ardbeg 10 year old (for whisky enthusiasts)", with complex aromatics and intense flavours. 49.3% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Aromas include sugarcane, fruit (peach, apricot), chocolate, vegetal notes, and pepper. Flavors feature agave sweetness, fruit (fig, pineapple), pepper spice, earthiness, and some bitter or ashy notes. The overall impression is positive, describing a complex spirit with balanced sweetness, enjoyable flavor, and a pleasant finish. Some find it boozy or muddled. - mezcalreviews.com
