Considered by several whisky writers as "one of the most 'obscure' distilleries in Scotland", Glen Spey would have continued to slip under the radar of malt chasers, had it not been for a handful of favourable releases. Formerly known as the "Mill of Rothes", it was built in 1878 by James Stuart & Co (who later went on to buy the Macallan distillery). Always intended as a filler for blends, as with its neighbour, Glen Grant, pot stills are equipped with "purifiers", redirecting some vapour to reflux within the still to produce a less feinty and lighter spirit. This edition was matured in a first-fill sherry butt. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... Always these very affordable series from Signatory, with that heavily worked sherry that perhaps doesn’t always let the character of the distillate shine through, but does its job very, very well. Colour: full gold. Nose: ah this is pretty, there's a touch of exhaust fumes (not pleasant in the street but sometimes rather charming in your glass), then green walnuts, cherry stalks, and peach leaves. A few hints of satay sauce, followed by pear cake. With water: marked saponification but it fades quickly, then comes a mix of Indian spices, think tandoori seasoning. Mouth (neat): surprising, on mustard, pepper, tar and dark chocolate, quite the unusual trio. With water: this time, beyond the Indian spices, there's candied ginger and fir bud. Really very unusual. Finish: long, and there's even a flavour of poppadums at the end. Comments: very hard to categorise, this isn't your typical sherry cask. In any case, it feels much more Indian than those super Indian malt whiskies, ha. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Scotch whisky lovers will be familiar with the concept of octaves. As with the Quarter Cask approach, essentially, the smaller barrel volume creates more wood-whisky interaction, soaking up barrel characteristics faster. While the rapid wood influence adds more vanilla and spice, it requires careful management to avoid over-oaking, which is why octaves are typically employed to 'refine' whiskies, improving colour and adding complexity over months as a finishing, rather than a full term process. Glenglassaugh take the concept to an extreme! According to the producers, expect "A delicious combination of citrus and sweet notes". Non chill filtered and natural colour. 44% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... I’ve tried quite a few octaves by other makers that had been too new-oaky (vanilla, coconut, and basta), but let’s see… Colour: pale gold. Nose: it’s got a ‘crafty’ side for sure, with a youth that shines through (porridge, pears) and some half-sweet, half-spicy oak, very ‘American’. Vanilla, ginger cake, then rather butterscotch and crème brulée. The earthy/bready touches in the background work well, this is not a new-oak bomb. Mouth: a creamy mouth feel, it almost flows like honey, and a very pleasant acidic sweetness mingle with grassy oak. Citron liqueur and green tea, pepper, a few grassy eau-de-vie-ish notes (I’ve distilled spent lees on day, the result had a few similar notes), some bay leaves perhaps… The oak’s influence never stops growing and rather makes me think of European oak this time. But I doubt it’s European oak. Finish: rather long, really grassy and bitter, not in a bad way at all. Herb cordial. The vanilla is back in the aftertaste and comes with oranges or citrons. Comments: a good example of some young malt from some active oak. This time, balance has been found. 78 points - whiskyfun.com

Distilled from richly peated malted barley, this whisky has been matured in octave casks, made from staves of a used cask. Octaves are approximately 1/8th the size of a butt. The smaller cask allows for more interaction between the wood and the spirit, giving the whisky a great depth of flavour in a short period of time. Bottled at 44%, non chill filtered and natural colour. Expect a delicate, sweet peated stye.
Other reviews... Colour: gold. Nose: could one use a mix of curry powder and antiseptic to smoke malted barley? Odd question, I know, but I do get quite some curry and quite some antiseptic, which is a combination that’s not as, well, as odd as you would think. Then we find more bandages and lemon juice, which is all fine. It’s actually got something slightly Laphroaiggy, not a bad benchmark for sure. Mouth: it’s not that I’m a peat head (I can hear you!), but the young distillate offered more resistance to the octaves, and the oak’s grassy/gingery side seems to be better integrated. Nice notes of lemongrass too, but the medicinal side has been lost on the palate. After all, Glenglassaugh’s not quite a coastal distillery, is it (I know some industry people are claiming that the whole of Scotland is coastal, which should imply that the place where you mature your whiskies does not matter. A long debate, not for here and not for now…) Finish: rather long, balanced, zesty/grassy and smoky. More ginger and pepper again in the aftertaste, that’s the octaves. A Riesling that is true to style and region, sourced from around Leasingham, where there are, and have been over many years, some of the finest Rieslings in the country made. The aroma is a lemon pith, tart lime, and slightly minerally combination, and the palate shows a typical tension, and yet there is a deep intensity. The generous fruit flavours are tightened by the crisp acidity, which focuses and extends the palate. That crunchy, pebbly minerality on the finish is a feature. Drink 2025-2035.

One of three wines now carrying the Church Block brand and given Shiraz is McLaren Vale’s leading red it makes sense to be part of such a high-profile team. Sourcing from several separate vineyards, this then stands as a regional expression of the variety, and quite a contemporary one at that. More than just a simplistic Shiraz plum fruit bomb, here we see savoury bouquet and flavours, Middle Eastern spices, braised root vegetables, black pepper, yet right in the core of the palate there’s an alluring burst of crimson to blue fruits, just enough to put any oak influence – both French and American with a tiny 8% new barrels – in its rightful background place. All up a lovely, friendly, very drinkable regional Shiraz.

Rich, powerful and densely fruited with an opulent texture and long, sumptuous finish.
First produced in 1990, Turkey Flat’s Shiraz has gone on to forge a formidable standing amongst wine critics and collectors alike. From the excellent 2023 vintage fruit was sourced from Turkey Flat’s Bethany and Stonewell vineyards with vines dating back as far as 1847. Maturation took place in French oak (30% new) for a period of 18 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate aromas waft from the glass complimented by some vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, powerful and concentrated, dense lush dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits are supported by a sturdy structure. Earthy mocha, vanillin oak and spice elements sit in the background. The 2023 Blewitt Springs Grenache is an aromatic, floral, red-fruited affair, shaped by abundant, sandy tannins in the mouth and tailing out over a long finish. This is supple, saturating and silky in the mouth, delivering all of the pleasure and satisfaction that Grenache (especially Grenache from McLaren Vale) is wont to do. There are notes of garden rose, pink peppercorn, red licorice, raspberry, cherry and blood orange. This is a marvelous wine, my favorite of the Clarendon Hills Grenaches in this vintage. A superstar. The tannins are the highlight—they create chew and shape—despite the fruit being marvelous. 14% alcohol, sealed under Diam. Drink 2025-2038.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate
Fragrant, in a spicy way, fruits deep red and black, tar and a rugged, ferrous rockiness, with clove, black pepper, star anise, brown cardamom, red and purple florals and soused citrus peel. It’s not unusual here, but this really needs ample air to show its best. It has less heft than the Onkaparinga, but still plenty of power and structure, plus a supple viscosity across the palate. As said, air is needed, with floral notes filtering out and a greater sense of levity. Cellar for a couple of years to begin with or decant and stand for a half a day. Drink by 2033.

Round and full with pear, green to red apple and lime fruits, crisp, tangy acidity and a long saline laced finish.
This small planting (less than 1 hectare) of Fiano on the Jasper Hill property is located very close to the winery at the southern end of Georgia’s Paddock. The wine is made by Emily and Georgia Roberts and in the early years was produced entirely from purchased fruit. The 2025 vintage is a 50/50 blend of estate grown and purchased fruit which was partially fermented in used oak and bottled relatively early (under stelvin) to retain freshness.
Bright pale straw to straw colour with a watery hue. Intense aromas of pear, red apple and honeysuckle are released through the nose followed by some lime and subtle ginger spice notes. Round and full on entry with pear, green to red apple and lime fruits melding into a Mediterranean herb and saline mineral like back drop. Crisp, tangy acidity lends an energetic feel to the long saline laced finish.

A bright ruby-red colour precedes a well-defined bouquet of redcurrant and cranberry together with summer flowers. The palate is elegant, with gently crunchy tannins rounding out a very well-put-together wine to drink now and over the next three to five years at least. Drink by 2030.

A close-planted, north-easterly vineyard of MV6 is the home of this Pinot, which shows intense, ripe aromas without being excessive. The nose is delightful, with heady aromas of red cherry, strawberry, confectionery, rhubarb and some earthiness and stemminess – the tertiary characters are still yet to present themselves. The Pinot is still quite a youngster, as it often takes a while for it to settle down in bottle and show its best, so while it’s lovely now, it’ll get even better with a bit more bottle age.

Bec Duffy loves Chardonnay and it shows, from the way the fruit is cradled and gently plucked at the exact ideal moment to the caress of very expensive oak that it matures in. Peach melba, lemonade fruit and gingerbread spice. This is edible from start to finish. Creamy thanks to its 50% Malo but with electric energy of acidity. There are plenty of reductive, smokey Chardonnays out there but this turns you head in the pedigree and total class act of the fruit itself. It’s princess Kate incarnate and it’s totally mesmerizing and full of fortitude and charm. This is a celebration of the Tamar Valley and a real standout! Drink with a fillet of coral trout in ginger and scallion sauce. Drink now or cellar for another 8-10 years. Drink 2025-2035.

2024 was an excellent vintage in Tasmania, certainly warmer than the preceding year. The juice underwent a wild fermentation in barrel, before half underwent malolactic fermentation. Maturation was in French oak, 50% of it new, for ten months. Gleaming pale lemon, the nose exhibits some spicy oak notes, but integration is proceeding well. Expect the wine to look even better in two to three years. We have notes of cashews, nutmeg, cinnamon, peaches, pears and glacéd lemon. Good concentration throughout, the wine is well balanced with impressive intensity and serious length. Suffice to say, that the length and the way the wine maintains its intensity over the journey is one of the highlights of what is a cracking Chardonnay. This is a ten year proposition. Love it. Drink 2025-2035.

With a family history of winemaking stretching back to the 18th century, Dominque Portet was the man behind the establishment of Taltarni and Clover Hill.
Produced from a blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Shiraz grapes. Damask pink tinged colour. Alluring scents of peach, strawberry and raspberry set sail through the nostrils with impressive intensity. Some blood orange, pomegranate and wet stone notes ensue. Silky, concentrated and uber delicious, the palate is flooded with peach, raspberry and strawberry fruits. Pomegranate, gentle musk and wet stone elements sit in the background. Bodegas Vega Sicilia is Spain's most prestigious wine estate, and has produced some of the most famous wines in the country's history. Founded in the 1860's and based in Ribera del Duero, two hours from Madrid, initial plantings at the estate included Bordeaux grapes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec, along with the indigenous Tinto Fino (Tempranillo). Unico is their most well-known wine, made from at least 80% Tempranillo and small amounts of Bordeaux varietals, and released after 10 years of maturation.

The 2015 Único comes from a year with a fast ripening, and they had to harvest early to keep the crunchiness of the fruit. This was the first harvest produced 100% by winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga. The aging was five years in oak, one and a half years in barrels and three and a half years in oak vats. It's a big vintage, produced with 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. It's ripe, with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.88 and 4.8 grams of acidity. The grapes were cooled down for one day, then the bunches were selected and fermented with a pied de cuve in vats. It's a ripe and concentrated vintage, with a classical modern Vega Sicilia nose that's expressive, aromatic and open, with notes of dark cherries, spice and cigar box. It has a medium- to full-bodied palate with abundant fine-grained tannins, good balance and the rustic elegance of the best Ribera del Dueros. In 2015, they produced 84,184 bottles, 3,645 magnums and some larger formats, less than in 2014, which was the largest production of Único ever. It was bottled in May 2021. Drink 2027-2042.

Silky and layered, the palate features chalky tannins and a smooth texture, offering depth and nuance. Subtle oak, fresh plum and herbs combine for a long, refined finish. Sit back and enjoy this Unico if you are going to open it now. Exotic spices and touches of balsam and cumin come up after the unleashing of blackberries, chocolate, iron, incense and violets. So fine-grained and polished, with a mouthful of velvety tannins that are so cohesive, close-knit and still reactive. Impeccably structured, it’s vertical before going extremely long and linear. A consistent Unico that seduces with a hint of iron-like minerality and rusticity. Drink on release or hold.

One of Spain’s best-known and beloved wines, this vintage, the 2015 Unico, like always, saw five years of aging in barrel and vat and another five years in bottle. It was bottled in May 2021. Blending 96% Tempranillo and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Vega Sicilia estate, usually from the same plots of 40+-year-old vines, it opens in expressive, juicy, lush pomegranate and dark cherry carried by supple, silky tannins and bright acidity. The length and structure are remarkable. The grapes were harvested “al dente,” when they were crisp, fresh, and juicy, perfectly ripe. There is tremendous balance between the wine’s acidity and freshness and full-bodied power. This will age 60 years and is winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga's first vintage. Drink 2025-2085.

Very whole and round with a generous width on the mid-palate offset by an assertive energy, supported by vivid acid and a well-presented tannic framework. An interesting counterpoint to the more chiseled linearity of the 2014 iteration. With all elements very much in their right place, but fruit still unapologetically punchy, it'll be interesting to see how this evolves as tertiary complexity softens the primary and secondary vividness. Cocoa powder, dry tobacco leaves and seaweed hover over juicy plum, dark cherry and black olive. Very long, spicy finish with lingering tapenade and salty liquorice. Drink 2025-2050.

The 2020 Valbuena is from a year marked by COVID-19 and lots of rain before the harvest, which resulted in a more ethereal wine, with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.9 and 4.45 grams of acidity. It was produced with 97% Tinto Fino and 3% Merlot, cooled down for 24 hours and then fermented with indigenous yeasts from a pied de cuve in stainless steel. It matured in barrel and oak vats during the first year, and in the second one, it aged exclusively in oak vats of different sizes, 8,500 and 21,000 liters. In 2020, the wine is finer-boned, more fluid and only medium-bodied, perhaps because of the dilution from the rain; the tannins are fine-grained and polished, but there's less juiciness in the wine. It calls for food. With time in the glass, the wine opens up and becomes more aromatic, and it even seems to gain juiciness and change texture. This is a production of 186,286 bottles, 5,673 magnums and some larger formats. It was bottled in May 2023. Drink 2025-2037.

The 2020 Valbuena 5º is Tinta del País from Ribera del Duero. Balsamic and herbal aromas mingle with forest, red fruit, cherry, violet and a hint of apple peel on the nose. Ample and richly flavored, with subtle oak in the background. A fine example of elegant Ribera. Drink 2025-2040.

Valbuena 5 used to be the baby Unico, and nowadays it is more like its younger brother with a lot of resemblance and just a bit less depth and tannins. Valbuena 5 comes from younger vines and sometimes different parcels from Unico. On the palate, this is more open and linear, while Unico is more profound and vertical. Notes of iron, blackberries, cedar, minerals and cocoa powder. Medium- to full-bodied with melted tannins and a long, long finish. Drinkable from 2025, but will hold for years.

The 2020 Valbuena 5° ages five years in oak and bottle, which gives it its name. Harvest was challenging due to Covid and rain, requiring due diligence in the field and a faster, earlier harvest than anticipated, the grapes coming from the Vega Sicilia estate’s vines with about 35 years of age. It’s an ethereal, medium-bodied wine of lovely delicacy and elegance, 97% Tempranillo blended with 3% Merlot, then aged 12 months in French and American oak, six months in stainless steel and then 18 months in bottle. Blackcurrant, cedar, and balsamic highlight a citrusy freshness. It will hit its prime in five years and age another 20-25. Drink 2025-2050.

Produced with a selection form the more ethereal parcels that don't deliver the power sought for Unico, Valbuena 5º is however much more than a younger sibling of the iconic wine. The 2020 vintage, a child of a challenging growing season, both due to natural and operational challenges (remember Covid?...), it is a great achievement of nuanced power and detailed complexity, with a luscious fruit core lined with oregano, dried sage and thyme. Dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans build a broody background layer while Assam and Oolong tea leaves add umami depth. Beautiful detail and depth to the tannins. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2020 Pintia is from a powerful year of concentration, so they were very careful with the harvest date, did a softer vinification trying to extract less and included amphorae and less toast in the élevage. It's opulent and juicy but gentle. The wine reached 15.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.9 with 4.4 grams of acidity. It fermented in stainless steel and oak vats with indigenous yeasts. It was a very warm and dry vintage in Toro, with a heat wave before the harvest, so they had to rush to pick the grapes; and still, the wine is richer and more powerful, even though the amphorae helped them contain the sensation of ripeness in the wine. It has a heady and ripe profile that's very aromatic and showy, with notes of very ripe berries, prunes and decayed violets, with a faint volatile twist. It matured 70% in new barrels, 10% in used barrels, 10% in stainless steel and 5% in clay pots. It's full-bodied and lush, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It's a ripe and powerful vintage for Pintia, but it evolves nicely in the glass, showing less of its ripe side with time, which to me is a good sign. Some 14,304 half bottles, 209,009 bottles, 6,645 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in August 2022. Drink 2026-2032.

Another accomplished vintage of Vega Sicilia's Toro project. Technical director Gonzalo Iturriaga says it was a challenging vintage, with illusive freshness. But ideal harvest timing and maceration management allowed him to deliver a balanced wine, with superbly integrated alcohol. Intense, expressive aromas of dark chocolate, dried black olive, prune and liquorice root mingle with Assam tea (for an elegant smoky allure) and crunchy blueberries. A pleasant rusticity, lined with dried sage, defines the grippy, savoury tannins. Long finish, spicy and earthy. Drink 2025-2040.

A beautifully poised and sophisticated Yarra Valley Chardonnay.
One of Yarra Valley’s most feted modern winemakers, Dave Bicknell emerged out of a hotbed of talent that was De Bortoli around the turn of the millennium and took Oakridge Estate to new heights. Applecross is his own venture which he founded with his viticulturist wife, Nicky Harris.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with green highlighted edges and a watery hue. Gorgeously scented, the intense yet highly finessed nose marries aromatics of white peach, nectarine and pear with dried honey, biscuity nougat, cashew and gentle infusions of gun flint. Rich fleshy white peach, nectarine, pear and dried honey flavours flow across the mid weighted palate with a gently creamed feel. Mealy biscuit, nougat, cashew and infusions of gun flint extend across the back half. Beautifully poised acidity lends some freshness to the long and expansive yet refined finish.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

A bright green gold. Aromas of perfectly ripened stone fruits meet a little grilled cashew and gentle saline scents in this gorgeous wine. Gently fleshy but with that trademark Bicknell purity of fruit and backbone. Long. Lovely. Drink by 2030.

I’m stunned by the concentration of fruit flavour here. If this wine called me on the telephone I’d be holding the receiver away from my ear – actually that’s not quite accurate because the flavour here is delicious, but you get the idea. The bottle cap should say Warning: Gale Force Flavour. These flavours play in the pear, grapefruit, tinned peach and lime arenas, with (subtle) flint and nougat characters as highlights. There’s pineapple-like acidity in action too, the latter emphasising just how drenched in flavour the acidity itself is, for starters, but also keeping the wine fresh and vigorous. The overall impression: A Class. Drink 2027-2034+

Complex and powerful with a supple flow and long, moreish finish.
This Pinot is a blend from three blocks hand picked on the 1st of March and sorted with 20% whole bunches added to 80% whole berries for fermentation. After two weeks fermenting on skins it was pressed to a mixture of 500 Lt puncheons, 300L Lt hogsheads and 225 Lt barriques where it completed malo and rested on fine lees for 11 months prior to blending and bottling in late February 2025.
Semi translucent bright red core with dark red toned edges and a light red hue. Displaying admirable complexity and intensity, nosing offers up scents of red cherry, violet, strawberry, clove, forest floor, brambly cedar and spice. Delicious red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits are delivered with great power as they supplely flow across the palate. Lending further sophistication across the back half are notions of clove, rhubarb, brambly cedar, forest floor and spicy dried herbs. Fresh with velvety yet structured tannins, it concludes very long and moreish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

From the old Lance's vineyard, planted from 1976–1998 (with a selection massale from Mount Mary) and in 2003. 80% whole berry and 20% whole bunch. Bright crimson. Perfumed with wild strawberries, first of the summer cherries, subtle rose bush and spice. The more you swirl the glass, the more fragrant it becomes. On the palate, there is a tender plushness, making it feel quite different to the previous Bicknell FC pinots from the Upper Yarra. Fine tannins and bright acidity round out a beautifully crafted and graceful wine. Drink by 2032.

The 2024 Applecross Pinot Noir is from a massal selection of clonal material planted between 1976 and 1998 at St. Andrews in the Yarra Valley. It was fermented with whole berries/whole bunches, and the élevage was in French oak barrels. This wine, a few months ahead of its market release currently, is so bright and perfumed. Rose, pistachio, graphite/petrichor, dry spice and tapenade coalesce on the palate in a rush. Pure, tightly wound and eminently focused, this is a gorgeous wine. The whole-bunch character rides high in the wine, but far from finding it distracting, I find myself attracted to it. This is super good and comes warmly recommended. 13.4% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2039.

Viognier picked at three ripeness levels over three weeks, crushed and destemmed with several hours' oxidative skin contact, then wild fermented in barrel and matured for 10 months in large-format old oak, without malolactic fermentation. The long, cool 2023 season has delivered a restrained and finely balanced expression of the variety.

From vines planted between 1973 and 1985, the Marsanne and Roussanne were picked together and co-fermented, with partial skin contact, tank fermentation and 10 months' maturation in old oak on light lees, without new oak or malolactic fermentation. The 2023 reflects the freshness of the season, expressed through a fine-boned and savoury house style.

A wonderfully complex and perfumed bouquet redolent of blackcurrants and wild blackberry together with new pencil box shavings, sweet spice and crushed violets. Medium bodied, in the best sense of the term, with the fruit, oak and seamless tannins coming together as one. It may not be the most long-lived Yeringberg ever, but it will provide an enormous amount of enjoyment over the next 10–15 years. Drink 2025-2040.

A fresh, slippery textured Pinot Gris that shows good length.
Brilliant apricot tinged colour with a watery hue. Elevated pear, red apple, rosewater and musk scents sail through the nostrils with a hint of ginger also evident. Nicely rounded pear, red apple and subtle quince fruits flow across the palate with some gentle musk and spice elements also chiming in. Brisk acidity with a fresh, slippery textured finish that shows good length.
