2023 Cesar Marquez Perez El Val Godello
    Bierzo, SPAIN
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

Cesar Marquez has Bierzo running through his veins, and is the latest generation of the Perez family to own the leading Castro Ventosa winery in north-western Spain. Growing up surrounded by the region's leading exponents, including a lengthy apprenticeship with one of the world's greatest winemakers, his uncle Raul Perez, has shaped much of what Cesar values in wine. While he still manages the family estate, Cezar started his own venture in 2015, and is already one of the most exciting young prospects in Spain.

Having a deep understanding and access to some of the best vineyards Bierzo has to offer, Cezar focuses on preserving purity and freshness, highlighting the promise Mencia has in the right place when made with attention to detail. Cezar is structuring his line-up of wines in Burgundian fashion, making a broader appellation wine, a village wine, along with several single vineyard offerings. Winemaking is similar on all wines, with grapes partially destemmed and fermented in open barriques, before spending 12 months in old barrels without any racking or top ups before bottling the following winter. These are wines that are not just great examples of Bierzo Mencia, but wines that truly stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest from any region or country.

El Val is a new wine of 100% Godello from a cool, high altitude vineyard, and transcends the quality limits expected of this grape in Bierzo.

    Other Reviews....
The top white 2023 El Val comes from one of the coolest places in Valtuille with vines regrafted to old-clone Godello. It has 13.09% alcohol, a pH of 3.09 and 7.98 grams of acidity, with good ripeness and very good parameters for acidity and freshness in a very complete year that is closer to 2021 than to 2022. It comes from ancient vines on clay, stone and quartzite soils and fermented in one 500-liter barrel, where the wine matured with the lees that were never stirred for 12 months. It has a stunning nose, smoky and flinty, with a lovely reduction and hints of gunpowder and toasted sesame seeds, very Burgundian à la Coche-Dury. It's very tasty, with a salty twist in the finish. Only 570 bottles were produced. It was bottled in October 2024. Drink 2025-2033.

The 2023 El Val is 100% Godello from a unique white parcel in Valtuille, surrounded by reds. The aromas are reductive to start, with notes of flint and gunpowder, evolving to green apple, floral hints, praline and herbs. Expressive and compact, the palate is fresh, concentrated, and lifted, with a soft, creamy touch. Utterly delicious. Drink 2025-2038.

The nose shows salted lemons with a restrained touch of flint. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with brilliant acidity. It’s linear and precise, with just the right amount of extract. There’s an exceptional sense of balance. Drink now.

Valtuille Vino de Villa replaces the previous Las Firmas bottling, and is Cezar's village wine sourced from two sites in the village of Valtuille, considered the most prestigious village in Bierzo.

The village red 2023 Valtuille Vino de Villa comes from sandy soils on closer plots. This year, it's 85% Mencía, 10% Alicante Bouschet and 5% other white and red varieties like Bastardo, Sousón or Estaladiña. It fermented with some full clusters in 1,000-liter vessels and matured in 500-liter barrels. It's juicy, round, harmonious and fruit-driven, with freshness and elegance. It has a moderate 12.55% alcohol, a pH of 3.51 and 5.42 grams of acidity. 6,890 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2025. Drink 2025-2032.

The 2023 Valtuille Vino de Villa opens with aromas of pomegranate, violet, rose and cherry. The palate is compact, juicy and tense, with a slightly more enveloping texture and a fresh, sustained finish. Drink 2025-2035.

Perfumed on the nose, with dried geraniums, rose petals and herbal nuances. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, showing an ethereal character with delicate fruit. Subtle and refined, with a graceful finish. This comes from five parcels planted in the village of Valtuille. It’s classified as Vino de Villa, the designation for a village wine. Fermented with about 30% whole clusters. Drink now.

Rapolao is the coolest of the single vineyard wines, located in the village of Valtuille and is certainly the most famous vineyard in Bierzo.

    Other Reviews....
César's 2023 El Rapolao was sourced from a centenary plot in the coldest part of the village, where the soils are rich in iron and organic matter. It fermented with 30% full clusters in small 1,000-liter vats, with a short maceration of 17 days and an élevage in used 500-liter oak barrels. It comes in at 12.75% alcohol, a pH of 3.58 and 5.38 grams of acidity, with lower alcohol and more freshness and acidity than the previous vintage. This is a place with more rusticity, always a little earthier, with slightly dusty tannins. 1,911 bottles were filled in May 2025. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2023 El Rapolao was sourced from old vines in Valtuille. It opens with violet, herbs, a touch of soft pine resin and rose. The palate is juicy, supple and gently creamy, with fine tannins and a clear expression. Tasted just weeks after bottling, this will gain further complexity with time. Drink 2025-2038.

Red cherries and herbs on the nose, with hints of tapenade, elderberries and earth adding depth. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, marked by fine-grained yet firm tannins and a focused thread of dark fruit that carries through to a tight, linear finish. Drink now or hold.

Pico Ferreira is located in the village of Corullon, and while only 300m from Sufreiral it’s on the opposite side of the mountain with a north-east exposure. Soils here are very poor, thin and rocky slate where the roots struggle to penetrate. This leads to small clusters and wines that are often more robust than others in the portfolio.

    Other Reviews....
The 2023 Pico Ferreira comes from a lieu-dit in the village of Corullón, a northwest-facing, shady slope planted with centenary vines on slate soils. It fermented with 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in 1,000-liter vats with 21 days of maceration and matured in a 1,200-liter oak vat and 600-liter barrels for one year. This is a little more discrete and remained closed after being in the glass for a while, whereas the other wines opened up. It comes in at 12.98% alcohol, with a pH of 3.57 and 5.36 grams of acidity, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. 1,980 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2025. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2023 Pico Ferreira is Mencía grown on slate with some clay, a rarer soil type in Bierzo. This aged in 500- to 600-liter barrels. Aromas include soft herbs, a hint of balsam, pomegranate and cherry. The slate-driven palate is compact and tense, yet juicy, with fine-grained tannins and long flavor. Drink 2025-2043.

Dark red core with black toned edges and a vibrant red purple tinged hue. Juicy red cherry, red liquorice and red raspberry fruits combine with dried herb, clove, earthy incense and spice infusions. With fruit sourced from the high altitude Darling Koombahla vineyard at Whitfield, expect a gamay of bounce and energy, not to mention some lively peppery spiciness. Hudelot-Noëllat is no longer one of Burgundy’s hidden gems as word is well and truly out now on just how exceptional these wines are. Charles Van Canneyt runs this iconic family owned domaine based in Vougeot where he crafts elegant and classic wines from some of the region’s most prized vineyards. Staying true to tradition, Charles practices minimal intervention in the cellar along with limited new oak usage. His aim is to produce refined Burgundy with an emphasis on purity and finesse, all while letting the terroir shine.

This is also aromatically fresh and bright with its essence of lightly spiced red berries. In the same fashion as the Bourgogne, the mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is moderately robust, serious and powerful before terminating in a firm and lingering finish that flirts with rusticity. The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Village reveals aromas of cherries, berries, orange zest and petals. Medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a sweet core of fruit and a clean, classic profile, it will offer a broad drinking window.

The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a refined bouquet with dark berry fruit, touches of wilted rose petals suffusing the raspberry and cranberry scents and neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a sorbet-fresh entry, orange rind interlacing the red fruit with an agile, poised finish. This should drink early—it's very fine. Drink 2026-2036.

An exuberantly spicy nose features notes of poached plum, black cherry, exotic tea and a whiff of oak. The vibrant, well-detailed and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors also conclude in a moderately robust and lingering but not rustic finale. The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Village has a fresh, crisp and slightly tertiary bouquet that unfurls nicely in the glass. This has a little more mineralité than its peers. This is also quite aromatically interesting and pretty with its ripe and fresh combination of plum, dark cherry, earth and a whiff of the sauvage. The super-sleek, intense and delicious, if not especially dense, middle weight flavors still manage to display good power that continues onto the youthfully austere finish that flirts with rusticity. Aromas of plums, cassis, orange zest and spices introduce the 2023 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers, a medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated wine that's penetrating and intense. Due to rootstock problems, the younger vines that informed this cuvée are being replanted, so in 2023 this is an all old-vine cuvée.

Fresh and spicy aromas of exotic tea, a plethora of floral elements and various dark berries leads to solidly concentrated and powerful medium-bodied flavors that presently conclude in a raspy and firm finish that exhibits a touch of astringency that I suspect comes from the saignée.

Like the Les Petits Vougeots, the expressive nose is wonderfully elegant, pure and wafting with its profile of red pinot fruit, spice and a floral top note. There is an equally good sense of underlying tension to the refined medium-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the youthfully austere, balanced and strikingly long finale. This is terrific as well and just as warmly recommended. Drink through 2033+.

The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes is more structured than the Petits Vougeots, exhibiting notes of cherries and raspberries mingled with vine smoke, orange zest and spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and layered, with bright acids and a saline finish, it derives from a parcel to the north of the vineyard, touching Les Feusselottes.

The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has another quite earthy bouquet with brambly red fruit notes and a light marine influence surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, fine acidity and just a touch of sour cherry mixed with raspberry on the strict finish. Compared to other cuvées, this didn't quite click into gear. Drink 2026-2035.

A fine even purple colour. Not so much bouquet showing, but this is beautifully balanced on the palate, with a velvet texture plus some interesting white pepper on the palate despite no stems, then a return of the raspberry and redcurrant fruit. Drink from 2030-2036.

An elegant, pure and airy nose is comprised by notes of the essence of red cherry, dark currant, violet, lavender and a hint of crushed anise. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the lightly stony and well-detailed medium weight flavors that conclude in a youthfully austere, complex and well-balanced finale. This is pretty much textbook LPV and warmly recommended. Drink through 2031+.

The 2023 Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeot is showing especially well this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet raspberries, orange rind and vine smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's layered and textural, with melting tannins and a perfumed finish.

The 2023 Vougeot Les Petits Vougeot 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with a dark berry aroma mixed with damp loam and iodine scents. This has very fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a sense of symmetry and a linear, quite strict, saline finish. Give this three or four years. Drink 2027-2042.

A fresh ruby, slightly the densest of the colours to date and with a concentration of fruit to match. On the cusp of red and black fruit, with a suave texture in the mouth, a little layer of velvet, notable persistence with fruit returning well after the finish. Drink from 2030-2036.

A whiff of herbal tea sits atop the earthy humus-tinged aromas of mostly red berries and all but inviable oak. The vibrant and detailed, if not especially dense, medium weight flavors flash focused power and excellent length on the somewhat raspy but not really astringent finish. This is on the awkward side today and it's hard to say if it will better harmonize with age though my projected range offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink through 2035+.

The 2023 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a slight richer bouquet than the domaine's other cuvées. It has fine delineation and poise, with violet and iris flower notes infusing the dark cherry fruit tones. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannins. It's silky smooth but the acidity keeps this on its poise. This is open with hints of blood orange toward the finish. This exudes class. Drink 2027-2045.

An intense purple, with fair nobility on the nose. Red and black fruits mixed, with a grand cru depth to the palate even if less seductive in youth than a Suchots or Malconsorts. However layers play out very well in the mouth with some little dark blueberries and bilberries right at the back. An excellent fruit acid balance without aggressive tannins. Drink from 2033-2040.

Here the fruit is cooler yet darker with similar floral influences and all but invisible wood surrounding the even spicier plum and exotic tea-scented nose. There is better mid-palate density as well as evident power to the large-scaled yet refined flavors that deliver outstanding length on the even more structured, strikingly long, beautifully balanced and complex finale. The 2023 Richebourg Grand Cru is textural and concentrated, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, orange zest, rose petals and exotic spices. Full-bodied, broad and creamy, with a fleshy, layered core of fruit framed by sweet tannins, it concludes with a long, perfumed finish.

The 2023 Richebourg Grand Cru has a complex, pure, focused bouquet with a strong marine influence and plenty of tightly coiled black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a sorbet-fresh opening. It has superb structure, though it's not as velvety as the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, with slightly sharper acidity and a sustained finish. Apparently, this is becoming more and more complex in barrel. It's very concentrated but it delivers the energy and frisson that should guarantee it ages long-term. Drink 2030-2060.

Imperial purple. Definitely a more explosive dark red fruit nose, more immediately opulent than the Romanée St-Vivant, yet it is not to plump on the palate, growing into a sense of refinement, and still with adequate acidity. This tasting shows as well as any the identification of each terroir. Drink from 2033-2043.

Here the elegant nose is cool, airy and beautifully layered with its essence of red cherry, violet, Asian-style tea and hoisin scents. The lacy, even silky, textured middle weight flavors are shaped by wonderfully fine-grained tannins on the moderately austere, balanced and impressively long finale. The 2023 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is deep and structured, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, burning embers, orange zest, petals and exotic spices. The 2023 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru was the last cuvée to finish its malo. This has a compelling mineral-driven bouquet with intense red berry fruit, razor-sharp delineation and poise. It's perhaps a level-up from the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with a plush entry. It's velvety smooth in texture, with a patina of oak to be subsumed, but there is plenty of weight on the finish and a wonderful peppery aftertaste. It's one of the more powerful wines from the domaine, but it will give many years of pleasure. This is fabulous. Drink 2029-2060.

A full heady crimson purple. The nose bespeaks considerable generosity of fruit here. Without losing the precise refinement of Romanée St-Vivant. Once again, the balance of red and black with good acidity is perfectly managed, with additional fresh vigour right at the back. The summer pudding fruits return in style. Drink from 2033-2040.

    $2159.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Maintaining the company's traditional styling, the 'handwritten' label and wax sealed stopper reflect Delord's artisanal roots. However, while this variant retains a vintage statement, the label has changed from Bas Armagnac to Vieil Armagnac. The convention is similar to a blend of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne cognacs being designated as "Fine Champagne Cognac". In Gascony, Vieil Armagnac refers to a blend of two terroirs of the same vintage year, or that the fruit is from Haut Armagnac (often simply stated as "Armagnac". Haut Armagnacs are considered of lesser quality, and less suited to long ageing, which is undeserved, since some can be brilliant). Vieil Armagnacs are typically aged for between 5 to 15 years, though sometimes much longer. Savour it neat or with a splash of water, paired with fresh pastries or semi-soft cheeses. 40% Alc./Vol.

    $2219.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

This family-run distillery in Lannepax continues the pursuit of soft and approachable vintage-dated Armagnacs capable of long maturations. Two alembics are employed, one of which is a Sier dating from 1900. Both are column stills equipped with 'spider plates', ideal for the production of Armagnacs that age gracefully. While most fruit is sourced from the family's 66 hectare vineyard in Bas Armagnac (of which 6 hectares are organic), this expression, simply labelled 'Vieil', presumably includes fruit from other regions in greater Armagnac. Grape varieties remain true to tradition, including Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Folle-Blanche and Baco. Typically aged for between 5 to 15 years, but sometimes much longer, almost any of Delord's vintage-dated offerings will make fine digestifs, pairing beautifully with a cigar, coffee and desserts, as well as specialties such as foie gras and fish snacks. 40% Alc./Vol.

The neutral flavoured oil distillates are blended into the filtered wheat spirit, diluted using PH adjusted water, achieved by using natural salts to create the smoothest mouthfeel possible. The resulting spirit offers suggestions of light olive, white chocolate, honeyed macadamia, coconut cream, with balanced minerality and sea salt. Works well in a classic vodka and soda and makes the world's smoothest vodka Martini! 40% Alc./Vol.

A delicious Pinot Gris, which is an even split between the Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills for fruit. The two parcels were fermented discretely and then blended before bottling. Straw with a hint of bronze, the nose is all crisp nashi pears, minerals, florals, green apples and a hint of gunflint. A seductive texture, the wine has balance and good length. A little more of that black dirt, autumn decay on the nose at first, yet give this a moment, and plenty of dried rose petals and native violet come out to play. Plenty of perfume as it opens with cooler fruited tones of blue cherries, plum pit, wet slate minerality and char-kissed. Tannins are silken, acidity is vibrant, and this lighter-framed Pinot slips through the mouth with style and surety. This wine is all about the phenolics and a cut-lip bloodiness. So fine and nimble, and seemingly seamless – just one long flow in the mouth. It’s polished and structured, supple and leaves an impression on the palate. However, it remains guarded. This needs a little more time, and I predict there is plenty more for this to say.

Yes, there is still a Butcher’s Block in the old restored blue stone cellar door on the property. I like this wine for its vibrancy and fresh fruit characters, and it’s been designed to suit drinking in the short to medium term. Has a nice plummy savoury combination with a little dollop of dark chocolate and fine dried herbs, slightly sage bush character to finish. It’s a complete wine, harmoniously balanced with fine, understated oak in support of the tannins. Sits together perfectly.

Concentrated and textural yet super scrumptious Tassie Riesling.

Yalumba’s Robert Hill Smith and Louisa Rose of Pewsey Vale & Heggies fame are intrinsically linked with Eden Valley Riesling. They had also long admired the potential of Tasmanian Riesling, so when the opportunity came up to work with a unique site of mature Riesling vines they jumped at it. Located in the Coal River valley, this small block of Riesling is hidden in the midst of larger plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines.
Brilliant water like colour with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts. Bursting from the glass with tremendous intensity are lime, citrus and green apple scents which are trailed by orange rind, wet steel and slatey mineral notes. Concentrated and carrying excellent textural volume yet super scrumptious in nature, lime, citrus and green apple fruits meld into a back half of orange rind, wet slate and flinty mineral elements. Crunchy acidity with a long, intensely flavoured finish that shows plenty of zest.

For 124 years, five generations of the Bujanda family have produced some of the finest wines from Rioja. It was Joaquín Martínez Bujanda who started the company with 10 hectares of vines in Rioja Alavasa and over the years the estate has expanded to include vineyards across the region.
A blend of 88% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano, 2% Maturana and 2% Garnacha matured for 25 months in French and American oak barrels. Dense midnight black dark red heart with a dark red hue. Black raspberry, liquorice and dark chocolate aromas waft through the nostrils followed by some vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich black raspberry and liquorice fruits make an opulent entrance carrying with them medium to full body weight. Earthy mocha, vanillin oak and spice elements extend across the back half. Sweet herbal notes rise from the glass with lime, sunny citrus, lemongrass and ginger spice. They gather, layer upon layer, on the palate, producing a spice-fuelled, citrus tangy taste sensation, smooth and supple in texture and long on the finish. A saturated red color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is pretty and inviting with aromas of baked cherries, toasted spices, cedar, dark cocoa, and rosemary. Full-bodied, it retains an even spine of acidity, plush tannins, and a savory and sanguine, mouthwatering finish. Hints of iron-rich earth frame the wine beautifully, and it's a generous wine with a lot to enjoy over the coming 10-12 years. Drink 2025-2037.

    Audrey Frick - JebDunnuck.com

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is explosive, bright and punchy at first, evolving from cranberry to cherry with dusty sage, spiced blood orange and Tuscan dust. The is pure elegance, texturally deep and nearly velvety in feel with a core of tart wild berries that add contrast as a balsamic tinge emerges along with fine-grained tannins toward the close. It finishes long, structured and staining, leaving a flinty sensation and primary core of fruit that drenches the palate as violet inner florals and hints of lavender abound. The 2020 is seamless from start to finish and, while more approachable than a typical vintage of Il Poggione, is balanced for an extended maturation. Drink 2028-2040.

Showing very nice results, with greater accessibility in this vintage, the Il Poggione 2020 Brunello di Montalcino has dark fruit aromas with blackcurrant followed by something spicy or herbal. I am reminded of licorice root, exotic spice, pressed rose and fragrant tea leaf. It finishes smoothly with silky tannins and an open-knit approach. This vintage is almost ready to drink, and you get elegant complexity at the same time. It sees three years in oak botti. Fruit is sourced across vineyards with 25-year-old-plus vines. Drink 2025-2038.

Occhipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines, and their tiny production is highly sought after. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.

SP68 is named after the road that borders the estate and is a blend of Frappato and Nero d’Avola.

The 2023 Rosso SP68 is pretty and perfumed, with a blend of crushed roses and violets accentuating blackberries, white smoke and wet stones. It washes across the palate with a liquid floral concentration and tart wild berry fruits, all guided by a core of brisk acidity. The 2023 leaves the mouth salivating as a tart cranberry crunchiness resonates and hints of blood orange slowly fade. Drink 2024-2028.

This fresh and youthful red – a blend of 70% Frappato and 30% Nero d'Avola – offers up some sweet and creamy red and black berries, with some touches of herbs and fragrant spice, A streak of black cherry emerges, then a nice dollop of acidity. It's not at all heavy, showing lovely balance, and it makes for a very appealing red for sharing with friends over a platter of antipasti. Drink 2024 - 2027.

Pierre Peters is a benchmark grower Champagne based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, founded in 1929 by Camille Peters and today run by Rodolphe Peters, farming around 20 hectares of predominantly Chardonnay across Le Mesnil (the core), with additional holdings in Oger, Avize and Cramant, including the famed Les Chetillons parcel acquired in 1930. Viticulture is meticulous, with replanting based on the estate's own massal selections, while vinification is largely in stainless steel (reserve wines held in a mix of steel, large oak and concrete) with partial malolactic fermentation and an emphasis on extended lees ageing to build texture and depth. The range moves from the non-vintage Blanc de Blancs Cuvee de Reserve and vintage L'Esprit through to the single-vineyard Le Mesnil bottlings Les Chetillons and Les Montjolys, and concludes with premium multi-vintage cuvees such as Reserve Oubliee (from a perpetual blend dating back to 1988) and L'Etonnant Monsieur Victor, with the house's hallmark being pure, chalk-driven Cote des Blancs Chardonnay built for serious ageing.

The 2020 L'Esprit de 2020 is vivid and finely cut. Orchard fruit, sage, mint, white pepper and slate lend notable brightness. There's a touch of angularity in the chiseled contours, along with the slightly drying character of the year. Even so, the 2020 is nicely balanced. This will be especially fine at the dinner table. Derived from three old-vine parcels within the same lieu-dit, the 2017 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons, disgorged in July 2024 with four grams per liter dosage, is structurally open today, but Rodolphe predicts it will tighten up with more time post disgorgement, as I’m sure it will. Opening in the glass to reveal notes of fresh almond, iodine, clams and citrus fruit, it is flamboyant and charming. Less youthfully austere and more demonstrative than the 2016 vintage rendition, it is Les Chétillons with a more powerful musculature, balanced by a bright spine of acidity and concluding with a long, saline finish. More mineral-laced than the Les Montjolys of the same year, one will want to consider laying down the bottles as they refine with age. It’s the first release where Péters decided to extend aging sur lattes for six more months (from six years to six and a half years), followed by a year post-disgorgement, a decision based on tasting. Drink 2026-2042.

The 2017 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys, from a vineyard in the village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, where higher percentages of clay and an deeper topsoil render rounder wines, was disgorged in July 2024 with a dosage of four grams per liter. A year that was undeniably more favorable to Chardonnay than to red grapes, 2017 is defined by lower-than-average yields and delivered a concentration that Rodolphe Péters compares to 2019. Soaring from the glass with a bouquet of tangerine zest, red apple, spices and bread dough, it’s full-bodied and textural, capturing power without weight. Les Montjolys shares a similar signature with Les Chétillons; but they are certainly no twin brothers, as Les Montjolys is a slightly richer, more demonstrative and less electric wine. It’s a charming rendition that will offer a broad drinking window. It’s worth keeping Les Montjolys more easily accessible, as these bottles can be enjoyed in their full expression earlier than Les Chétillons of the same vintage. Drink 2024-2040.

The 2017 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys is a wild, exotic wine. Apricot, tangerine peel, gingerbread, dried flowers and strong tropical inflections give the 2017 its distinct personality. Soft contours lend notable immediacy. This is an especially open-knit vintage for Les Montjolys. It's a commendable effort for a year marked by late-season rain followed by heat, unfortunately ideal conditions for botrytis. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: July 2024. Drink 2025-2032.
