2017 Conde Valdemar Gran Reserva
For 124 years, five generations of the Bujanda family have produced some of the finest wines from Rioja. It was Joaquín Martínez Bujanda who started the company with 10 hectares of vines in Rioja Alavasa and over the years the estate has expanded to include vineyards across the region.
A blend of 88% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano, 2% Maturana and 2% Garnacha matured for 25 months in French and American oak barrels. Dense midnight black dark red heart with a dark red hue. Black raspberry, liquorice and dark chocolate aromas waft through the nostrils followed by some vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich black raspberry and liquorice fruits make an opulent entrance carrying with them medium to full body weight. Earthy mocha, vanillin oak and spice elements extend across the back half. Shades of leather and walnut also make an appearance. Ripe, slightly chewy tannins with an earthy mocha and spicy vanillin oak laden finish.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
Alc. 14%
Other Reviews….
Walnuts, subdued dried plums, dried sweet spices, hazelnuts, chocolate and touches of dry earth and pine cones. Still quite juicy and firm, with a medium to full body and a creamy, lengthy finish that turns a bit savory at the end. Drink or keep holding.
