The story behind this unusual wine dates back to the time of the Crusades. The island of Cyprus was then a favourite resting ground for Crusades returning from battle and later became a centre for the Knights of the Order of St.John. It was the members of this order who discovered a wine that was been produced in the Troodos Mountains. This wine they named Commanderie after their headquarters, finding it to be not only an excellent drink but also to possess therapeutic properties.

Estienne de Lusignan described Commandaria St.John in 1572 A.D., recording in his book “Descriptions of the island of Cyprus”: “There is a certain grapevine…which ripens at the end of July, whose grapes are not gathered until the end of September. They [the grapes] are put on the roofs the space of three days…then trodden and the pips and stalks removed before fermentation.”Commandaria St. John is then aged in large earthenware jars buried in the ground and fortified with grape brandy.

Ettore Zucca created this amaro liqueur in 1885, a bittersweet Italian aperitif, made using the root of the Chinese rhubarb, found only in mountainous Kansu province. After having been absorbed by liqueur giant Disarrono, they relaunched the product, harking back to the drink's roots and boosting the abv by almost double. Expect flavours of cola, molasses, and burnt coffee with gently bitter and smoky herbal notes. 30% Alc./Vol.

Easy to drink with the addition of water, showing caramel, nougat, dates, dark chocolate, polished oak, along with a hint of leather and tobacco. Slightly better than last year’s release—richer, thicker, and more balanced. I’m enjoying Stagg’s more rounded, less aggressive demeanor of late. A classic! Editor's Choice. 96 points

With the entire Redbreast portfolio gleaning rapturous acclaim world wide, it's hard to imagine how they'd be able to improve on perfection. Reports have it that the 21 year old achieves just that. A quintessential expression of the Pure Pot Still style. Irish whiskey rarely gets better than this.

This is Roger Waters doing The Wall: over the top, unsubtle, and totally entertaining. Let’s put it this way: If you like Redbreast 12, you’ll love Redbreast 21. All of Redbreast’s classic notes are intact: ultra-ripe banana, coconut husks, and butterscotch, to name but a few. But there’s also burnt honey, coal fires, and a powerful caramel note on the finish. The citrus notes — driven by partial aging in first-fill sherry casks — are particularly present here. ...A bottling I usually adore on the occasions I’ve tried it in the past, although this is the first time I’ve written proper notes. Colour: gold. Nose: golden syrup drizzled over passion fruit with ripe pineapple, melon, caramelised brown sugar and some sultanas stewed in old calvados. Simple and totally beautiful with these rather luscious and precise fruits. A touch of white pepper as well. Mouth: preserved lemons, lime oil, more brown sugar, fruit syrups, oatmeal flapjack and a little flinty minerality. Some green tea, hessian and then moving more towards white fruits such as lychee. Finish: Long, slightly earthy with a more nervous, citrus led fruitiness. Lots of lemon peel, olive oil, a touch of soot and some barley water. Writers Tears is a vatting of Pure Pot Still and Single Malt (proportions are a closely guarded secret). It's the creation of Writers Tears proprietor, Bernard Walsh, who enjoys privileged access to the warehouses of certain Irish distillers from where he selects the casks for his own labels. Some years ago he came up with this entirely ‘new’ type of whiskey: a blend of malt and pure pot still (PPS) whiskeys (all other Irish blends contain some proportion of Coffey still grain whiskey). The Pure Pot Still is a style that was once known as the "Champagne of Irish Whiskey" and was traditionally a favourite of Irish writers suffering from writer’s block. Rather poetically, they drank so much of it, some were reputed to have cried tears of whiskey when inspiration finally hit. Although the Pure Pot Still style was once widespread in Ireland, a number of historical factors including the The Irish War of Independence, the Irish Civil War, and prohibition in the United States led to a drastic reduction in the number of Irish distilleries. With this reduction in Irish whiskeys available came the loss in recognition abroad of the pure pot still style itself. The majority of the surviving distilleries began to produce blends and single malts to the detriment of the Pure Pot Still.

Tasting note: Flawless, bright gold appearance. One of the most pristine and delicate Irish aromas we’ve experienced with a deliciously fruity edge including notes of peach and pear over a distinctively Irish pot still base. Several minutes aeration draws out banana cake and flashes of apple along with hints of vanilla and manuka honey. Supremely soft entry builds into a medium bodied whiskey of stunning purity, achieving a wonderful fusion with a gently spiced, fruity, grainy profile followed by a burst of butterscotch at mid palate. Soft, slightly oily mouthfeel. Finish is dry and understated with notes of vanilla and cereal followed by a subtle butterscotch fade. In a word ‘elegant’, in fact, so lacy and light, it’s hard to believe this is whiskey, such is its softness. Must try Irish. Non Chill filtered. 40% Alc./Vol.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild holds a unique place in the history of Bordeaux, being the only property to have its ranking changed since the introduction of the 1855 Classification. Originally listed as a Second Growth, through the tireless efforts of Baron Philippe Rothschild to make a wine he truly believed could match the best in the world, the property was upgraded to First Growth in June 1973. Known as the most flamboyant of the First Growth wines, Mouton Rothschild shows the rich and exotic side of Pauillac. Plantings on the 75 hectare property are a mix of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.

The 2009 Mouton Rothschild is exceptionally beautiful. A huge, powerful wine, the 2009 possesses stunning richness and radiance, with plenty of underlying structure to support all of that exuberance. Smoke, grilled herbs, tobacco and incense give the 2009 much of its exotic, captivating personality. Seamless, opulent, yet with terrific freshness, the 2009 is sure to thrill those fortunate to own it for several decades. In a word: dazzling. The blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot. Harvest took place between September 23 and October 6 in a year marked with dry weather, higher than average temperatures and generous sunshine. Drink 2024-2059.

Pure perfection, and reminding me slightly of the 1982, the 2009 Château Mouton Rothschild boasts an opaque ruby hue as well as an incredibly perfumed, sexy, seductive style in its ripe currant and cassis fruits as well as new saddle leather, spicy oak, smoke tobacco, and graphite-driven aromas and flavors. Complex, full-bodied, and beautifully concentrated, with sweet tannins, this masterpiece is already impossible to resist yet won't hit full maturity for another decade and will evolve for 50-60 years if well stored. The texture is the most striking thing on this wine, right from the attack. It rolls out a carpet of silk and welcomes you in, and displays the gourmet edge that Mouton does so expertly, with blackberry, black cherry, crushed blueberries and garrigue. It has a softness that makes it not necessarily signature Pauillac, but certainly signature Mouton, with the ripeness of the fruit tempered by firm, brushed tannins and a core of controlled acidity. Crushed mint leaves appear on the finish. Multi-layered and brilliant.

Everything that makes Mouton Rothschild one of the world's great wines is here in spades. Incredible levels of concentration with an opulence not found in other Pauillacs create the backdrop here. Unctuous, velvety, rich, and palate-staining, there is an exotic edge to the texture, countless layers of perfectly ripe fruit, purity, and a spicy edge that sets you up for a seamless finish that lasts more than 60 seconds. As good as this is, patience is going to be a virtue here, as this is only getting started. Drink from 2029-2075.

Other reviews... More Viking stuff by dear HP, and I say why not? Even if the pack says that this is ‘spicy and elegant’, which sounds hardly Viking (when seen from France). Colour: gold. Nose: very HP, I would say, starting a wee bit spirity but getting then minerally honeyed and smokingly heathery, while notes of ale, marmalade and custard are roaming the oceans in the background. Trying to get into the Viking spirit too, you know... Mouth: it is, indeed, rather spicy, slightly eau-de-vie-ish (I would have said 10 instead of 16), but good, with raisins and this wee smoky minerality that’s very HP. Touches of strawberry jam and then more marmalade. Finish: medium yet a tad rough, with a little kirsch, or slivovitz, then raisins in chocolate. While the entry level Cardhu is considered somewhat 'beige', the 18 year old is described as one of the great all rounders in its category, with just the right amount of sweet barley and smoothness. Critics have acknowledged this bottling as re-affirming the distillery's reputation for high quality. Awarded 'Best Speyside Malt' in 2016, the lads at whiskyfun.com also commented, "a surprise, really... ... It’s an expression I like, gentle and complex, even if I’m not sure we’re seeing it much on our favourite shelves these days. Colour: gold. Nose: very very nice, not too demanding but complex, a bit old-school (the school of the 1990s shall we say), with some malt, glazed chestnut, roasted nuts (aren’t roasted nuts disappearing from our malt whiskies?) and a large bag of Jaffa cakes. Orange blossom water. Wee touches of aniseed here and there, rose petals, stewed peaches, a little tamarind jam, some wee metallic touches (silverware)… Nutshell, something oriental. Mouth: excellent and not even very light. Marmalade, dried figs, raisins, walnut wine, pecan pie, honey-glazed nuts, Chinese pancake, maple syrup… I find this 18 really superb; only slight problem, it goes down like cold beer or wine. Finish: not too long for sure, but clean and wonderfully honeyed and nutty. What we call ‘chouchous’, or caramel-coated roasted peanuts. Simply a sin. Comments: a surprise, really. ...Cardhu—for me, at least—means intensity, and this delivers precisely that, with masses of citrus (bergamot and grapefruit) and just a hint of dark chocolate behind. With water, there’s red apple and Victoria plum, while the mouth is precise, with any richness cut with fresh acidity. Zesty and fresh on the finish. Try it in a Bobby Burns. Considered a more "restrained" Grange, this wine has balance but a somewhat foursquare/monolithic character with dry, astringent tannin in the finish, hence the question mark. The color is still a healthy dense purple, and the wine shows the tell-tale peppery, asphalt, earthy, creme de cassis characteristics, but the tannin seems to be increasingly problematic. As always, it is still a young wine, so the question that begs to be answered with time is, "Is it just unevolved and backward, or is it too tannic?"

The Beltion brand was born after the second world war when Giacomo Gianandrea began selling his production of almond milk. The name (and the milk) soon became popular throughout Southern Italy. Fast forward to 1995, when his children set up a modern operation with a view to extend the brand to a wider range of cordials and spirits from the classic Italian repertoire. Unlike its simpler & much younger counterpart, Tullamore Dew 12 YO is a blend of triple distilled, 12 -15 year old whiskeys, matured in old Bourbon casks and old Oloroso Sherry butts. Once poured, the 12 Year Old’s complexity and sophistication are immediately apparent with clear flavours of Irish Pot Still and unpeated malt emerging. Undertones of toasted wood from the lightly charred Bourbon casks give way to a sweet nuttiness derived from the sherry butts.

Tasting note: Bright polished copper colour. Sweet scents of raw sugar, molasses, caramelised peach and light cinnamon. The decidedly dense, tautly muscular and powerful broad-shouldered flavors are underpinned by notably firm tannins and outstanding length on the beautifully complex finale that exhibits just enough warmth to warrant mentioning. This is quite clearly built-to-age and it's going to need it. In a word, impressive. Drink through 2030+.

The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux is fabulous, wafting from the glass with notes of wild berries, orange peel, cinnamon, rich soil and espresso. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a lovely line of bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, sappy energy, and terrific depth and tension at the core. This is a great Clos des Epeneaux from Paul Zinetti. Drink 2025 - 2055.

It is understated and classic in style, but seems to grow with aeration. The crisp palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and plenty of tension – a bit linear and strict at the moment, though I suspect this will age with real style once it has gotten through its adolescence. 'Myth' is the second whisky in Penderyn's 'Dragon' range of 41% ABV expressions, along with Celt and Legend. This departs from the distillery's commonly found style of ex-Madeira wine cask-finishing, preferencing ex-bourbon and ex red wine casks. There are less pedestrian flavours of melon and green apple suggested through the vanilla and biscuity malt. It is arguably the fruitiest in the collection while remaining a subtle, low-key experience with little to no burn, leaving the impression of a well-made blend. Non chill filtered.

Milk, yoghurt, mud, cow stable… Not too sure here… Mouth: better on the palate, with some tropical fruits yet again (much fewer than in the 2007 and 2008 though), probably from fresh bourbon, then some lighter vanilla and touches of barley water. Feels like a blend, with this lightness. Quite some sawdust, not the best part. Finish: medium but a little planky. Launched in March 2015, this is yet another NAS addition to Suntory's sought after "Hibiki" series. More exclusive than the standard Harmony bottling, it's the first Hibiki created for the global duty free market. A combination of over ten malt and grain whiskies aged in five different types of casks from the Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita distilleries, Suntory chief blender Shinji Fukuyo was involved in its creation, with production overseen by the third generation Master Blender and great-grandson of Suntory's founder, Shingo Torii. Beautifully presented in the brand's trademark 24-faceted bottle representing the Japanese seasons, the bright brass colour shows impeccable purity. The initial pass finds subdued, resinous, woody aromas with extended air contact finally amplifying the bouquet beyond mediocre, releasing attractive fragrances of dusty cocoa, dates, oak shavings, cinnamon and pepper. Medium bodied, the mid palate expands with dried fruits, hazelnut, light cocoa and peppery warmth. At the finish, there's wood spice and wood shavings followed by a subtle vanilla and honey undercurrent. It improves over time, ending up richer and more robust than most Japanese blends at its level, probably due to some sherry casks in the mix. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Some NAS blend and a loco-loco price of more than 100€ a bottle – 250€ at some online crooks’. Of course the older age-stated Hibikis are/were great whiskies, but this is just very scary and feels a bit like extreme cow milking, if you see what I mean. But okay, let’s assume some kind of master actually selected this, and proceed… Colour: gold. Nose: your average American-oak doped young whisky at first, but I have to admit it develops nicely and with unusual traits, such as genever, tapioca, and soft cinnamon. Lacks depth though, while it feels a little too ‘technological’ for me. Nice hints of new tyres, though. Mouth: right, this is good despite the wood that’s too apparent for me. Feels wood-flavoured. Then tangerines and papayas, nectarines, and Greek muscat. And why not? Finish: medium, with a little cedar wood, Turkish delights, and more peaches or nectarines. Comments: feels a bit like whisky made in a lab – you’re right, aren’t they all these days – but of course, they made it well. Very well, actually. Like every other whisky-making country, Japan now produces a wide range of styles, from sherry to bourbon cask matured to peated and cask strength expressions. In short, expect diversity, and a few surprises along the way.
One should also keep in mind that the Japanese whisky industry is not highly regulated. For example, their whiskies can and do combine malt whisky from Scotland with Japanese whisky. This is not an uncommon practice in Japan, and often the exact breakdown remains undisclosed.
Akashi do not obfuscate about the contents. They are more open than most. For instance, they state on their labels (in Japanese) the breakdown. Some of their products are composed of local and imported (ie. non-Japanese) malt whisky combined with a high proportion of molasses spirit (some of which has been stored in barrels).
While we're not certain of the breakdown of the Akashi Red, we do know it's a malt and grain blend, and likely a young to very young whisky - which is not surprising given the price point. Regardless, the proof is in the pudding. Taste-wise, we think this is one Japanese blend that sits comfortably alongside many a Scottish equivalent.
Tasting note: Brilliant brassy gold. Nosing finds a pleasing balance of fruity malt, vanilla and sweet grain-cereal notes. Surprisngly flavoursome, with a medium bodied, rounded, supple mouthfeel and delicate dried fruit / orchard fruit flavours. Some sherry input? Drying vanilla oak balances the malty middle. Kind of like a young Ben Nevis. This may well exceed your expectations for entry level Japanese. 40% Alc./Vol.
Whisky writer, David Broom, comments, "The White Oak distillery is perhaps the least known of Japan’s whisky producers, but it has a legitimate claim to be the country’s oldest with a license to make whisky granted in 1919 — four years before Yamazaki was built. It's located in the city of Akashi in Hyogo Prefecture, west of Kobe, facing the Seto Inland Sea. The distillery was founded by Eigashima Shuzo in 1888 to produce sake. Eigashima Shuzo obtained a license to manufacture whisky in 1919, but it was when the company moved to their current facilities in 1984 that White Oak Distillery was born.

The Grand Vin 2016 Château Lagrange checks in 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot brought up in equal parts new and used barrels. It shows the fresher, elegant style of the vintage and offers beautiful black cherry and cassis fruits intermixed with tobacco leaf, damp earth, and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure, seamless, and layered, it has a vibrant, tight texture, terrific tannin quality, and a great finish. It's a quintessential expression of this vintage. Give bottles 4-5 years and enjoy over the following two to three decades. Drink 2022-2047.

The acidities are more vibrant up in St-Julien than in the lower stretches of the Médoc. An excellent Lagrange, this is every bit as good as it was en primeur, with a similar fruit quality doing a lovely vertical trick through the mid-palate where you can feel each individual element's weight, but cushioned on a bed of air. Ruby in colour with some violet around the edges, this wine is well made and built to last. Chewy tannins and black fruits make this fairly Pauillac in style. At 50% of total production in 2016, this represents the highest proportion of grand vin for years following replantings back in the 1980s. Drink 2024-2040.

Being owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (of Lafite fame) has been a boon for Chateau Rieussec. Since taking over the property in 1984, the planted vineyard area has increased from nearly 40 hectares to roughly 90 hectares today. Investment has also been made in the cellars, and the winemaking team are now better placed to work with the multiple small lots stemming from various parcels and picking runs through the vineyard. The vineyard is planted to 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc, and 3% Muscadelle, and the wines are aged in roughly 50% new French oak.

Pale lemon colored, the 2016 Rieussec comes sashaying out of the glass with a beautiful floral and citrus perfume of orange blossom, pink grapefruit, yuzu, lime leaves, lemongrass and fallen leaves with hints of nutmeg and candied ginger. Having shed a lot of the puppy fat from when I last tasted this from barrel, the palate reveals loads of elegant, tightly wound layers and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Try after 2024, but already gorgeous.

A step up over the Carmes de Rieussec, the beautiful 2016 Château Rieussec has remarkable purity and freshness while still packing beautiful depth of fruit. Honeyed peach, apricot, flower oil, and even a hint of wet stone all emerge from this full-bodied, thick, opulent effort. I love it. It has a rounded, sexy style ideal for drinking any time over the coming 15-20 years. The 2016 is a final blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. Drink 2019-2039.

The 2007 vintage of this Australian icon was matured for 21 months in new American oak. Impenetrable inky black colour with deep black crimson hue. The nose is very perfumed displaying great intensity with aromas of ripe blackberry, dark chocolate and liquorice with an overlay of vanillin oak and toast along with some mocha spice like end notes. Dense and opulent the palate delivers a concentrated flavour profile of dark chocolate, ripe blackberry and liquorice followed by some vanillin mocha like characters and spice. Excellent structure with solid, slightly chewy tannins that appear almost velvet like beneath the enormous wall of fruit that overshadows them. Full crimson, with a purple rim; a 98/2% blend of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon that exudes power and authority; the bouquet is already complex, the American oak making an impact as it always does when Grange is in its youth, the palate with multiple layers of predominantly black fruits; the tannins, like the oak, need to soften, and should do so well before the fruit starts to fade. Follows the Grange pattern, with 21 months in the 100% new American oak in which it finished its fermentation. A good grange, but not a great one.

Austrian rum is hard to come by in Australia. This one from Stroh weighs in at a hefty 80% alc/vol and is limited to 500ml bottles. Stroh is unusual in that is distilled from herbs and fruit, as opposed to sugar cane and will come as something of a novelty for the rum connoisseur or may be equally appreciated as a cough soother. The unmistakable aroma of Stroh makes it indispensable for the creation of typical Austrian sweet dishes.
Tasting note: Deep sienna brown / old copper colour. Penetrating aroma opens with notes of caramelised onion and burnt herbs. Aeration draws out a sweet core of over-cooked fruits while the spirit prickles the nostrils. The palate is bitter and tannic on entry before an achingly intense, prickly and hot, bitter-sweet attack; hints of toasted almond and fruit cake are followed by a touch of rubber band on the finish. The tongue piercing spice and spirit heat continues to flame the mouth well into the aftertaste, turning bone dry as the fruit cake flavours fade. Lip numbing, and just way too much spirit heat to make this enjoyable straight. 80% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Unusual brick orange and metallic copper hue. Caramel and sweet buttered nut aromas with a whiff of sharp alcohol. A tannic, hot entry leads to a fiery off-dry full-bodied palate with roasted nut, treacle, and intense spices. Finishes with a mouth numbing wash of heat, rubber and cardboard flavors. Addition of water tames the heat and mutes, rather than enhances, the flavors. Too manipulated. 80% alc/vol.

Tasting note: Crystal clear with a silvery appearance. Opens with a top note of fairy floss followed by perfumed scents of candle wax, sweet smoke and pepper. Light to medium bodied, the palate is smooth, slightly oily, semi sweet and pleasantly peppery before finishing clean, light and dry. This will certainly win some points if ‘smoothness’ is what you’re looking for in Blanco tequila. Easy drinking. 37% Alc./Vol.

From Champagne's oldest house, with a history dating back to 1729 that began with the efforts of a monk, Dom Ruinart, a close friend to Dom Pérignon.
Presents well with a fine satiny mousse that sits well over a pale straw, pale gold edged base that’s finely threaded by a persistent bead. Aromas of pear and citrus have a baked bread overlay with some subtle oily toast and yeast lees notes also apparent. The house style has been freshened up with the palate livelier than past releases. Its brimming with pear, citrus and yeast lees flavours which overlay a background of light toast, subtle almond and baked bread. Stimulating acidity leads into a long vividly sculptured finish.

Although this has some red-berry aromas from pinot noir, the pear, white-peach and white-floral aromas are central, and they surely come from the chardonnay grape. Excellent balance of fresh fruit, animating acidity and creaminess, the mousse keeping it moving steadily across the palate through the very clean finish. A cuvée of 45% chardonnay, 45% pinot noir and 10% pinot meunier. Drink or hold.

The 2009 Barolo Cannubi Boschis Sibi et Paucis starts off with minerality and tightness, and then within just a few moments in the glass it becomes more robust and generous, opening quickly with each successive sip. Dark black fruit begins to appear, and then some of the minty notes that Cannubi Boschis vines tend to offer, as well as hints of rubbed rosemary. Also, the wine covers the whole mouth very nicely. This is going to be a rare find at just 900 bottles set apart for this late release, which is about 10% of production on the whole. This is a special Barolo, definitely a keeper.

Sandrone's 2009 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is ample and generous on the palate, with terrific textural breadth and lovely resonance. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, smoke, licorice, spice and menthol build in the glass. A swath of underlying tannin shapes the wine nicely. At nearly ten years of age, the 2009 is entering the first part of its prime drinking window.

This distinguished, deluxe Scotch is a subtle blend of 15 year old whiskies considered as special as the uniquely designed 'pinched' bottle that holds it. The container was actually the world's second trademark bottle design, officially registered in 1919 - Coca Cola's was the first. The wire netting around the bottle, now merely decorative, was originally used to keep the cork from expanding out in extremes of temperature.
Tasting Note: Medium amber in colour, this is an elegant scotch with some complexity, wood aromatics and a light palate that finishes dry. Glenkinchie, a lowland distillery features strongly in the blend and is no doubt responsible for a degree of Dimple's softness. 40% alc./vol.

Tasting note: Alsace whisky has recently been afforded an official AOC and many consider it the country's best region for the spirit. 'Uberach' is a new release from Jean Metzger whose been producing whisky at the Bertrand distillery for more than a decade. Brass gold in colour, it has a spicy fruit cake lift plus an odd earthy, herbal quality on the nose which is hard to classify. Full bodied, slightly rustic and chewy in the mouth, there's a plummy, musty, grapey, glace cherry character that reminds you of good aged grappa or Eaux de vie. Medium long, sweetening towards the finish, it's the single malt equivalent of abstract art: Difficult to pin down, yet curiously likeable at the same time. 42.2% Alc./Vol.

Chairman, Sidney Frank, dreamed of creating a vodka with a taste as radiant as its presentation. "I went to one of the finest distillers in France and asked for their assistance in making this dream of mine a reality" says Frank. "We tested various blends of grains and different water sources. For ten generations, the Nolet family in Holland has been distilling the finest hand made spirits using techniques and recipes perfected by Joannes Nolet and his successors since 1691. Ketel One, named after the original distilling kettle number one is hand crafted in traditional pot stills, filtered through charcoal and rested underground in tile-lined tanks until perfect. Only the heart of the distillate, the center of each batch, is considered fine enough to be called Ketel One. The first 100 gallons, and the last, are separated and discarded as being either too harsh or too weak.

Tasting note: Clear. Nail polish and citrus peel aromas. A round smooth entry leads to a dryish medium body with dried fruitiness/seediness. Sweet dough, citrus peel, and white pepper fade becomes drying and powdery on the finish. A little hot and vapory. 40%Alc./Vol.
