    $99. 99

    $1199.88 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

One of the superstars of Barsac, the wines are typically noted for their elegance and style rather than weight and richness. At 38.5 hectares in size, Coutet is one of the largest vineyards in the region, with plantings consisting of 75% Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Fermentation takes place in barrel of which 50% are new with further ageing in oak for 18 months.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Coutet was picked over six tries although the final ones were not used with 134 g/L residual sugar this year. It has quite an intense bouquet with beautifully defined lemon thyme and light peach aromas. The palate is well balanced with a vivacious opening, lively apricot and quince notes and concentration effortlessly offset by the silver thread of acidity. Composed and persistent on the finish, this is a superb Coutet. Drink 2028-2055.

Dried mangoes, pineapple, sweet lemons and some dried durian. Nicely unctuous with a long, flavorful finish. Waxy and medium- to full-bodied for a Barsac.

    Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.com

Orange blossom and lemon rind on the nose, soft and gentle aromatics. Clean and fresh, this has a lovely purity to it, not so sweet with some bitterness that comes in on the mid palate but this has a sleek frame and good definition to the elements. Pear, peach and a hint of honeyed orange. Pure and pristine. Drink 2026 - 2040.

    2024 Chateau Montrose Pre-Arrival Offer
    Saint Estephe, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $280. 00
    Bottle
    $3360.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

This historic large estate, situated atop the Gironde in Saint-Estèphe, is renowned for producing some of Bordeaux's most exceptional and enduring wines. Over the past 15 years it has enjoyed significant investment, resulting in the establishment of a state-of-the-art winery and cellars. Substantial efforts have also being made in the vineyards. When Olivier and Martin Bouygues acquired Château Montrose from the Charmolüe family in 2006, the property boasted 17 hectares of pre-clonal vines dating back to the early 20th century. Through a meticulous massale selection program 80 promising clones, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, have been identified for replanting purposes. Similar endeavors are now focused on Merlot, utilizing a plot behind the château acquired from Phélan-Ségur. Additionally, experimental cover crops are being introduced, and cultivation techniques are being adjusted to minimize disturbance to the soil microbiome. The winemaking approach remains traditional, with macerations lasting approximately three weeks and maturation taking place in around 60% new oak barrels.

    Other Reviews....
A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Montrose is a serious, muscular effort that numbers among the wines of the vintage. Unwinding in the glass with notes of cassis, burning embers, cigar wrapper and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, with a lively spine of acidity, rich structuring tannins and a long, penetrating finish. With both the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon recorded at Montrose and a rather low pH of 3.55, it will surely number among the longest lived 2024 Bordeaux.
    93-95 points
    William Kelley - Wine Advocate

The 2024 Montrose has a little more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend due to the yields in various parcels. It was picked between September 23 and October 7 and matured in 60% new oak. The well-defined and very able nose demonstrates classicism, fine delineation and a little more florality than the Terrasse III. The palate is medium-bodied with very finely chiselled tannins and a keen line of acidity. This symmetrical Saint-Estèphe is blessed with an elegant, sapid and reassuringly precise finish that the estate seems to have honed in the last few years. It does not have the unbridled ambition of, say, the 2020 Montrose, but it is exceptionally well crafted and will become a fine Saint-Estèphe. Drink 2032-2058.
    94-96 points
    Neal Martin - Vinous

The 2024 Montrose exudes Cabernet Sauvignon character in its aromatic savoriness and tannic structure. In fact, the 2024 has the most Cabernet Sauvignon ever. Tightly wound today, the 2024 impresses with its energy and focus. There's a bit less mid-palate and overall heft than most years, as well as a brighter fruit profile. Floral, spice and mineral overtones lend brightness throughout. The 2024 is a super-classic, nervy Montrose that will need a number of years to be at its most expressive. Aging is projected to be 18 months, with 60% new oak. Drink 2034-2064.

This shows finesse and elegance as well as plenty of subtle red currant and blackcurrant character. Medium-bodied with refinement and length. Tender, vivid and pure. Extremely well done in a difficult year. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and 3% cabernet franc.

    James Suckling

The 2024 Château Montrose is on another level and clearly one of the wines of the vintage. Based on 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, it's aging in 60% new barrels. Gorgeous notes of cassis, violets, graphite, and smoky tobacco all emerge from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, it has remarkable purity, fine yet building tannins, and a great finish. Coming in at 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.5, this estate continues to deliver First Growth quality year after year.

2020 Torbreck The Forebear Shiraz Magnum (1500ml)
    Barossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $1850. 00
    Bottle
    $22200.00 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 40 Years (2025-2065)
    ABV: 15.5%
    Closure: Cork

By any measure a mind blowing example of Barossa Shiraz.

The second release of this new flagship addition to the Torbreck portfolio, the Forebear is a single vineyard Shiraz that dates back to the 1850’s and pays homage to generations of Barossa vignerons. Maturation takes place in new French oak barriques for a period of 24 months.
Super dense inky black core with an equally deep dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass with extraordinary force are potent aromas of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry which are complimented by some vanillin cedar, earthy fennel, subtle dark chocolate, leather and spice notes. Exceptionally powerful and intense yet showing more refinement and freshness than the Laird, ultra rich dark plum, blackberry, liquorice, blueberry and dark chocolate flavours coat the palate with a tidal wave like energy. Extending across the back half are spicy vanillin cedar, earthy fennel, delicate mocha and pepper elements. Opulently textured and dense yet highly finessed and seamless it possesses beautifully polished, tightly structured tannins. Concludes with stratospheric length. Hold onto your hats when you drink this!
Drink over the next 10-40 years.
    Alc. 15.5%

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 The Forebear is sourced from the oldest plantings in the Hillside Vineyard in Lyndoch—12 rows planted in the early 1850s. For this tasting, the wine has been open now for three hours, and yet it needs more in the way of oxygen than what it currently has. The wine remains aromatically closed, with notions of black fruit, exotic spice, charry oak and forest floor. This has peat, old leather, jarrah and black cherries in profusion. The palate is shaped by intense graphite tannins, which feel closely knit and exclusively the property of old vines; they are silty and settle in the mouth—if you need a visual—like watching a pint of Guinness settle in the glass. A monumental wine, it needs space and quiet to be able to absorb the layers of complexity and undulating waves of flavor through the finish. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025-2040.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

Complex aromas of blackberry compote, roasted coffee beans, iodine, graphite, olive tapenade, dark chocolate, blood plums and baking spices. The palate has a deep, luscious mouthfeel with firmly framed tannins that lead into a viscous and textural finish. So much concentration and old-vine character that is built for the ages. Exceptional. Made from vines planted in 1850s on one acre in Lyndoch. Drink or hold.

2012 Billecart-Salmon Cuvee Louis Salmon Blanc de Blancs Vintage Champagne
    Champagne, FRANCE
    $449. 00
    Bottle
    $5388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Cork

Cuvee Louis Salmon is 100% Chardonnay from the best parcels of grand crus in the Cote des Blancs. Billecart-Salmon note they source from Cramant for the minerality, Chouilly and Oiry for the finesse, and Mesnil-sur-Oger for the structure and longevity.

    Other Reviews....
A 100% Chardonnay, sourced from vines planted in the communes of Mesnil-sur-Oger, Chouilly, Cramant, and Oiry, the 2012 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Louis Salmon evokes aromas of lemon oil, pastry, baked bread, walnuts and chalk. Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, it's vinous, almost creamy, with a layered, delicate structure that leads to a delicately citrusy, long and delicate finish. This Champagne is built to age, thanks to the power of the 2012 vintage and the house's signature tension. Disgorged in the second quarter of 2023 with 3.9 grams per liter dosage, it was matured 75% in stainless steel and 25% in barrels. Drink 2024-2044.

Yohan Castaing - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2012 Brut Blancs de Blancs Louis Salmon is a large-scale, ample wine. A rich, heady Champagne, the 2012 has started to open nicely. It is far more expressive today than it was a year ago. Even so, this remains a very young Champagne, one that needs time to shed some of its considerable baby fat. Baked apple tart, dried flowers, mint and dried citrus peel are some of the many nuances that emerge over time. Tropical notes wrap around the substantial finish. Dosage is 3.9 grams per liter. Disgorged: January 2023. Drink 2026-2042.

Incredible aromas of brioche, bread dough and pie crust with superb, electrifying fruit, from peaches to fresh apples. It’s driven, mouthwatering and with fantastic structure, yet it’s so balanced and creamy. Very fine and silky bubbles. It’s better and better as it warms slightly in the glass. 3.9g/L dosage. Drink or hold.

    James Suckling

The 2012 Champagne Louis Salmon Blanc De Blancs is entirely from Côte de Blancs Grand Cru villages and saw 25% oak vinification, with most of the malo blocked to retain freshness. Initially, it opens to citrus-driven aromas of lime, but as it opens in the glass, it deepens to reveal notes of white peach, fresh bread, and a touch of toasted spice, with its portion of oak just highlighting the edges of the wine. The palate offers intensity without austerity, with a good, profound, layered feel, and it has a pillowy and elegant mousse, a coating texture of citrus oil, and a long finish. It’s already hard to resist but will improve with time. It’s a wonderful wine for Billecart-Salmon in this vintage. Bravo. Drink 2026-2046. It saw 3.9 grams per liter dosage and 4.4 grams in the final wine. Drink 2026-2046.

2012 Billecart-Salmon Cuvee Nicolas Francois Vintage Champagne
    Champagne, FRANCE
    $449. 00
    Bottle
    $5388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Cork

In 1818 Nicolas Francois Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon were married and founded Maison Billecart-Salmon in Mareuil-sur-Ay, the family’s hometown. The pair joined forces with Louis Salmon, Elisabeth's brother, who oversaw all the commercial activity for the house. Nicolas Francois, who was passionate about oenology, dedicated himself to the creation of the wines. As a tribute to this trio, Billecart-Salmon have crafted three cuvees beginning with the Cuvee Nicolas Francois (first created in 1964), followed by the Cuvee Elisabeth Salmon Rosé and Cuvee Louis Salmon Blanc de Blancs.

Cuvee Nicolas Francois is a blend of the best terroirs from Montagne de Reims (Pinot Noir) and Cote des Blancs vineyards (Chardonnay), with vinification partly in traditional oak casks lending generosity to this elegant and fine Champagne.

    Other Reviews....
Billecart-Salmon’s 2012 Nicolas François marks the first release since 2008 and stands as another success. The fundamentals remain unchanged: settling and fermentation at low temperatures, a small proportion vinified in oak barrels and partial malolactic fermentation (20% was blocked in 2012). This vintage was characterized by a prolonged flowering period, significant rainfall and mildew pressure, resulting in a small crop. The harvest of fruit, which contributed to this cuvée, took place between September 17 and 22. "It was crucial to select only the ripest fruit, as maturation varied significantly between plots," explains Billecart’s head winemaker, Florent Nys. But what of the wine itself? Disgorged in May 2023 with a dosage of 3.8 grams per liter, it exudes aromas of candied lemon, honeysuckle and ripe peach, mingling with nuances of beeswax and orange zest. On the palate, it is full-bodied, ample and enveloping, boasting a layered, concentrated core, a chalky structure and mouthwatering acidity, despite the warm vintage. It concludes with a persistent, saline finish, hinting at the savory complexity that has emerged with such notable bottle age. Compared to the 2008, which remains tightly coiled, the 2012 is broader-shouldered and more demonstrative. Drink 2026-2047.

The 2012 Brut Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart shows all the natural radiance of the year. There's gorgeous resonance and texture here. Apricot, spice, tangerine oil and lightly honeyed notes infuse the palate with notable depth and persistence. This rich, expansive Champage has a ton to offer. This release was disgorged nearly two years ago, which also adds to its complexity. Dosage is 3.8 grams per liter. Disgorged: May 2023. Drink 2026-2042.

This complex Champagne has delicious aromas of waffle cones, vanilla beans, apricots and pastry with touches of white chocolate and salted caramel. It’s electric on the palate, which is creamy yet structured and focused, with a fine bead of bubbles and a zesty, tangy backbone of acidity. Long and tense finish. 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay (all premier and grand cru), 10% of wines are vinified in oak casks. 10 years on lees. 3.8 g/L dosage. Disgorged in the second half of 2024. Made from 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, the 2012 Champagne Nicolas François has a complex élevage and was tasted as a vin clair. Bottled at the end of June of this year (the magnum in July), it’s highly aromatic on opening at this stage, with aromas of honeydew melon, ripe peach, and fresh flowers. Medium-bodied, it is long on the palate, with a linear feel, but has a ripe, rounded exterior and a clean, chalky finish, with notes of grapefruit pith and fresh lift. At this early stage, it feels as though it may be approachable in its youth, but we‘ll have to see.

The 2012 Brut Rosé Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon is a very sexy Champagne, but it is also quite reserved, especially within the context of the year. The blend of the 2012 Champagne Elisabeth Salmon is includes 55% Chardonnay along with 10% red wine, the majority of which was raised in stainless steel, with a 3% splash raised in oak. It pours a deeper salmon orange tinge and is a more assertive wine in the glass, with notes of spice, smoky wet stones, peach, almond, and fruitcake. Medium to full-bodied and assertive, it holds its mousse together more clearly and has more transparency, with a pomegranate texture, and is long on the palate. This structured wine will benefit from another year or two in bottle before drinking over the following 15 or more years. 2024 Chateau Grand Village Blanc Pre-Arrival Offer
    Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Given they are under the same ownership of the Guinaudau family, Chateau Grand Village is often referred to as Chateau Lafleur’s second vineyard. The estate has been owned by the Guinaudau’s relatives for hundreds of years, however it was not until the year 2000 that they began to produce wine themselves from the property. Situated on the edge of the Fronsac region and classified as Bordeaux Superieur, the vineyard is planted to 79% Merlot and 21% Bouchets (Cabernet Franc). The terroir is similar to Saint Emilion with its mix of calcisol going down a foot or so to a bedrock mostly made up of asteria limestone. At Grand Village, they practice many of the same techniques employed at Lafleur, including pruning and de-budding adapted to each vine plant, crop thinning in summer and de-leafing. The grapes are picked by hand, followed by very careful sorting and selection. Grand Village also produces a white wine from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (85%) and Semillon (15%), from a 5 acre plot.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Grand Village Blanc was picked from September 5 to 11. This has a vivacious bouquet with lime flower, honeysuckle and light wild peach notes that are beautifully defined. A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Beau-Séjour Bécot was picked in late September. Clusters were open rather than compact, lessening botrytis pressure, making it easier to wait to attain full maturity. Once again, this impeccably managed estate has delivered a terrific performance in challenging conditions.

The 2024 Beau-Séjour Bécot is deep, vivid and wonderfully alive. Dynamic and explosive, with striking inner perfume, Beau-Séjour Bécot is hauntingly beautiful. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice and rose petal soar out of the glass. Silky, refined tannins add to the wine's finesse. The increase of Cabernet Franc in the blend has added aromatic depth and textural elegance. There's a feeling of transparency here that is impossible to miss. Beau-Séjour Bécot has grown into one of the most distinctive wines in Bordeaux. Simply put, the 2024 is magnificent. That's all there is to it. Élevage is 55% in new oak, 15% in once-used barrels and the rest in 20HL casks. Tasted two times. Drink 2034-2054.

A wine with very bright and al-dente fruit. Aromas and flavors of redcurrants and minerals with lavender and chalk. Medium to full body and a solid core of tannins integrated with the dark fruit. Toned-muscle quality to the tannins. Fresh and vibrant at the end. Pure fruit. Energy. 77% merlot and 23% cabernet franc.

The 2024 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, aging in 55% new oak with a small part in foudre. Ripe black cherries, leafy herbs, damp earth, and crushed stone notes define the aromatics, and this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, an ultra-fine mouthfeel, gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. This is brilliant, and I'd put it up with the crème de la crème of the vintage, especially in this elegant, finesse-driven style. Tasted twice with consistent results.

Gorgeous fragrance, really quite deep and vivid, almost an opulence to the perfumed nose. Generous and filling, smooth, silky, round and so vibrant. Juicy and lifted but still with structure - this has acidity, a cool freshness, super fine silky tannins and a soft push from start to finish. Feels super classic and classy, refined and elegant with cool blue fruit and lots of saltiness, but so distinguished. You really feel the limestone in the glass. Still serious, you feel the Cabernet spiciness but you don't get the impression they struggled with ripeness at all. A great glass. Sappy, fruity, clean and salty. A true wine of place. A yield of 32hl/ha, 3.40pH. Drink 2032-2046.

The 2024 Couhins Blanc is a regal, elegant wine. Readers who want to enjoy a world-class dry white that is still affordable will delight in this gorgeous, sculpted offering from Couhins. Slate, chalk, mint and white pepper drive through a core of citrus-inflected fruit. Couhins Blanc is one of the finest dry whites of the year. If recent past vintages are any indication, it should also be a steal. Drink 2026-2032.

A mineral edge is chiseled into the green limes and gooseberries. Bright acidity gallops through the medium-bodied palate, delivering a bone-dry, mouthwatering finish.

Bright and racy, the 2024 Château Couhins Blanc reveals tart citrus, crushed stone, mint, and sappy green herbs. Made from mostly Sauvignon Blanc with a splash of Sauvignon Gris, it's medium-bodied, fresh, and focused, showing a more mid-weight, racy style.

Bright and alive, this zings on the palate with crisp lemon and lime, bitter grapefruit and gorgeous freshly picked peaches. Hints of topicality add sweetness - pineapple and mango, which add depth and layers to the expression. I really like this. Great energy and appeal. Drink 2025-2036.

    Other Reviews....
One of the most impressive wines of the vintage, the 2024 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a striking effort that sets itself apart with seamless integration, even at this early stage, and a strong sense of identity. Poised, precise and unmistakably singular, it opens in the glass with a perfumed bouquet of iris, violet, dark berries, cherries, vine smoke and gentian. Medium to full-bodied, supple and notably fleshy for the vintage, it’s layered and textural, with a sappy, enveloping core of pure, vibrant fruit framed by finely grained, velvety tannins, culminating in a long, precise and gently stemmy finish. This is one of the rare wines of the vintage where sappiness is expressed with such finesse and charm, thanks in no small part to meticulous vineyard work and severe sorting in the winery. The blend is composed of 48% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot, and it's maturing in a combination of 70% new oak, 19% foudres and 11% amphorae. Drink 2026-2044.

Seamless and silky in the glass, with superb balance, the 2024 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is one of the wines of the vintage. All the elements are so well balanced, always a sign of a superior vintage at this address. Floral notes, spice, leather and mocha run through a core of layered, beautifully persistent dark red fruit. Harvest took place between September 17 and 25, during one of the rare windows with little rain. As always, Les Carmes is done with a high percentage of stems (52%), specifically 100% for the Cabernet Franc, 50% for the Merlot and 20% for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Aging is 70% new oak barrels, 19% 18HL foudre and 11% amphora. New oak is already very nicely integrated, another sign of a superb vintage. The 2024 is a brilliant effort by the team led by Technical Director Olivier Pouthier. Drink 2034-2054.

This is always an idiosyncratic wine. This year it’s stunning, with a unique floral aspect and excellent depth of pure blue fruit, mulberries, dried herbs and white pepper. So juicy and mouthwatering on the palate, with a medium to full body and fine tannins. There is a crystalized mouthfeel, but the tannins are fresh and well knit. This is already delicious, which indicates its superb balance. 48% cabernet franc, 29% cabernet sauvignon and 23% merlot.

The 2024 Château Carmes Haut-Brion comes from 7.8 hectares of vines in the heart of Pessac and is 48% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance 23% Merlot that was vinified with 52% whole clusters and will spend two years in 70% new barrels as well as smaller portions in vats and amphora. It's one of the darker-hued wines in the vintage and has a terrific nose of ripe black fruits, smoky earth, violets, crushed stone, and hints of lead pencil. It's medium to full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, and a great finish. I think it's clearly one of the top wines in the vintage.

A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Domaine de Chevalier reveals a spicy, brooding bouquet of oak, dark berries and gentian. Medium to full-bodied, juicy and round, it's firm and has an assertive tannic frame, concluding with a somewhat chewy finish. The 2024 Domaine de Chevalier is soft, fruity and relatively simple, given its typical personality. Plum, black cherry, licorice, chocolate and sweet oak are pushed forward in this open-knit, easygoing Pessac-Léognan. There may be more here than meets the eye. We will see. The 2024 D'Issan wafts from the glass with attractive aromas of cassis, burning embers, pipe tobacco and violets. Medium-bodied, pillowy and lively, with a sweet core of fruit framed by powdery tannins, it's an elegant, fine-boned Margaux that will offer a broad drinking window.

The 2024 d'Issan is pretty closed in on itself. Issan is usually a showier wine at this stage, but the 2024 is decidedly virile, almost somber in feel. Floral, spice and earthy notes open with some coaxing, and yet the Grand Vin is only showing a fraction of what it has to offer. I do admire its strong character, however. The 2024 will be a fascinating Issan to follow. Drink 2034-2054.

This vintage shows lovely minerality and excellent red currants, red cherries and stones. Such vibrancy, youthfulness and energy. Not a wine of immense depth, but I like the chalky tannins that provide vibration and length. Mostly cabernet sauvignon with merlot, malbec and petit verdot.

The 2024 Château Issan is composed of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34.5% Merlot, and small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Medium to full bodied with a rich, plush and spicy palate.

Aged in a 50/50 mix of seasoned French and American oak barrels for a period of 14 months. Pitch black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Spicy dark plum and liquorice aromas evolve from the glass followed by some meaty graphite like notes and peppered earth scents. Rich, plush and spicy, the medium to full bodied palate is decorated with fleshy dark plum and liquorice fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle scorched earth and peppered fennel accents lie beneath. Opulent mouth feel and velvet like tannins finishing long, lush and spicy.

Whole berries are fermented here before a maturation period of fourteen months in an evenly divided mix of French and American oak. The colour here is a deep magenta, while the nose exhibits notes of warm, dusty roads, black cherries, bay leaves, ripe plums and dark chocolate. This is a silky, finely rendered Shiraz, with a supple texture and very good length. The palate sees those bright, black cherries really come to the fore while there is a fine line of acidity running the length. This wine is an eight to ten year proposition, over which time it will surely improve further. Drink 2024-2034.

    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $159. 99
    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57.1%

Around 14 years old seems to be a good age for Craigellachie, a fact confirmed by the official release 13 year old which remains the distillery's leading line. Long fermentations are responsible for a fragrant, fruity aspect in the distillate, giving it a tropical and slightly floral edge that's most noticeable in mature examples. In this 14 year old from Rattray, tradition and heritage meet experimentation and modernity via an “old-style” spirit drawn from an x Bourbon barrel acquired back in 2010. It's been given an extra layer of complexity through finishing in a first-fill Burgundy red wine cask. Matching casks with secondary woods is a continual learning process. Here the bottlers say the spirit has gained appreciable notes of Pinot Noir, complementing Craigellachie's characteristically full-bodied base. Cask No.18 yielded 296 bottles at 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Colour: Nectarine gold. Nose: Fresh iris, blackcurrant jam and apricot toasted oat crumble. Palate: Charred peach, dried cranberry and rose petal jelly. Finish: Spiced berry compote with a sprinkling of toasted pine nut.

Ardnamurchan AD/ Sherry Cask Release 2024 Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $149. 99

    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

The importer tells us that these Ardnamurchan Sherry Cask Releases have a slightly different barrel makeup each time. The distillery is offering them annually to differentiate them from previous versions - hence '2024' in the title. Likely more mature stock is added each vintage, and no doubt their skills in blending the final whisky are honed as the liquid matures. The much-anticipated second edition has been bottled from a parcel of 15 unpeated ex-sherry Hogsheads and 10 peated ex-sherry casks filled in 2018 and 2019, including nineteen Oloroso butts and two PX butts. The deep mahogany colour shows their influence which comes through as a wonderful medley of red fruits, bonfire smoke, brine and dense nutty sherry. It will leave you wondering how a young whisky can taste so 'old'. This West Highland gem is becoming preferred over sherried Islays for many peat heads. The only question is, will Ardnamurchan sustain the quality over time? 21000 bottles produced. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The Sherry Cask Release is once again a success; the sherry is evident but does not overpower the distillery character with smoky fruitiness. The whisky has a lot to offer and shows that a strong sherry influence does not have to lead to sticky sherry bombs, but can produce complex whiskies. Another Ardnamurchan that is extremely enjoyable. - whiskybase.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Murray mint, bonfire on the beach, salted peanut ice-cream, tomato stalks, Brazil nut, sundried tomatoes, teriyaki beef jerky, relish and tamari. Unctuous. Palate: Tarry rope, bung cloth, smoky bacon, old tractor shed, peanut brittle, sticky spare-ribs. Red plum and cherry, then shifts to chalk cliff and meaty traits above on later half. Finish: Crashing waves, sea-salt, bothy fireplace and cigar shop.

Rattray contend that few makes are more amenable to finishing than Glen Moray. Its soft, fruity elegance matches well to a great variety of cask types. Sauternes wood, in particular, enhances the inherent sweetness of the spirit, highlights the abundant citric notes and peppers it all with a gentle spice. Starting life in a Bourbon hogshead before been transferred to a first-fill Sauternes Barrique for over two years, cask No.892 had an outturn of 264 bottles at a potent ABV of 64.3%. Yet, despite the extreme alcohol, tasters have stated, "Keep your hands off the water, this Glen Moray can also be enjoyed at cask strength." Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Nose: Amazingly smooth with flattering fruit aromas and a complementary honey sweetness. Apricot cream, peach, walnuts with summer honey. Behind this I find dark malt biscuits, delicate vanilla and a hint of caramel. Palate: The sweetness of the Sauternes hits you hard here. Apricot jam, ripe mandarins, orange zest, Jaffa biscuits, golden syrup. Then the alcohol can no longer hide, a slight spiciness of ginger and cinnamon emerges. - whiskybase.com

Kilchoman Sauternes Cask Matured 2024 Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $189. 99
    Bottle
    $2279.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

After a six year absence, Kilchoman's Sauternes matured expression is back, this time boasting a full-term maturation instead of a five month finish. Founder, Anthony Wills selected a combination of fresh and refill Sauternes barriques (22% vs 78%) from two separate years, the youngest being 2018. The result is not too dissimilar to the last version, with flashes of dried apricots and peaches detectable through the savoury, earthy peat reek. A bit of a sweetie at mid palate where the oils thicken until typical Kilchoman peat overtakes, ash and pepper in tow, with an unexpectedly, dry chewy finish that shows some wet stone minerality. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The nose thrills with gooseberry, honeysuckle, kiwi, linseed oil, passion fruit, lemon sorbet sprinkled with sea salt, and the caramelized meringue peaks of a baked Alaska. It has a slightly waxy mouthfeel with lush summer fruits from the sauternes cask showing Golden Delicious apple, banana, apricot, star fruit, and honey, with a late arrival of peat smoke. Water polishes the fruit notes but unleashes more smoke. 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Domaine Tempier is Bandol’s most well known estate and has been run by the Peyraud family since 1936. Their classic red cuvée is a blend of complex terroirs, mixing the variety of clay-limestone soil located around the Estate, but also those in La Cadière, Sainte Anne d’Evenos, and Ollioules. The varietal composition here is predominately from Mourvedre with some Grenache, Cinsault, and Carignan also included.

From the 2020 vintage the family has decided to rename their classic red cuvée: "Lulu & Lucien" to honour Mrs Lucie 'Lulu' Peyraud, passed away soon after the 2020 harvest at the age of 103. She joined her husband Lucien in what the family calls ‘Winemakers’ Paradise.’

    Other Reviews....
Shows a seductive prettiness, with violet and spice box notes layered with crunchy red plum and graphite shavings, plus flickers of Mourvèdre meatiness. Oak sits nicely in the backdrop, while salty, savory acidity buoys this along and brings freshness to the finish, which is marked by silky, polished tannins. Drink now through 2032.

Deep and powerful yet finessed, this is Yalumba Signature at it’s finest.

Inky black heart with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Unfurling from the glass in what is a wonderful show of both refinement and intensity is a mix of red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry scents trailed by some vanillin cedar, tobacco, earth and faint bay leaf notes. Rich red plum, red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry fruits flow eloquently across the medium to full bodied palate. Piquing further interest and complexity are spicy vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco, earthy dark chocolate and bay leaf accents. Deep and powerful yet finessed it has a sturdy fine grained tannin structure that bodes well for longer term cellaring. Finishes very long, sophisticated and elegant.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.
    Alc. 14.5%

Yalumba's famous Signature cabernet sauvignon and shiraz blend has a strong pedigree when it comes to cellaring and the 2022 release will certainly carry on long into the future. The fruit density and purity here are impressive. Blackberry, doris plum and black cherry tones, their flow elegant and graceful across the palate with hints of spice, cedar, tobacco, pencil shavings, roasting meats, dried herbs and olive tapenade. Fine-grained tannins are in abundance and there is an extended finish that rolls on and on. It's a super release. Drink by 2054.

    Marionette Pineapple Liqueur (500ml)
    AUSTRALIA
    $61. 99
    Bottle
    $743.88 Dozen
    ABV: 25%

Marionette scoured sunny Queensland for the sweetest pineapples they could find and ended up in Mareeba. There they discovered perfect baby pineapples at the family-owned Piñata farms, picked small for extra sweetness. The resulting liqueur offers bright green pineapple skins on the nose, with a palate of fresh pineapple acid and a punch of bold true fruit flavour. The skins add a green clove spice, with a finish of tropical fruit warmth. Enjoy in a Jungle Bird, Rum Old Fashioned, or Hotel National Special. 25% Alc./Vol.

    Cellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)

Rich, concentrated and powerful with a long, refined finish.

Personally tailored by Mr Riggs this high end offering comes appropriately dressed in a dark blue bound presentation box that even smells like a new suit! Fruit is sourced from Ben’s own Piebald Gully vineyard in McLaren Vale whilst the Coonawarra Cabernet component comes from Weatherall vineyards. A blend of 68% Shiraz and 32% Cabernet Sauvignon maturation took place in a mixture of French (80%) and American (20%) oak, of which 35% was new, for a period of 22 months.
Dense midnight black core with a deep dark red black hue. Engulfing aromas of blackberry, liquorice and blackcurrant combine with vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco, earthy dark chocolate and spice notes. Making a rich, velvety entrance onto the medium to full bodied palate are concentrated blackberry, liquorice, blackcurrant and dark chocolate flavours. Exhibiting magnificent power and depth, notions of vanillin cedar, earth, delicate tobacco and spice extend across the back half. Beautifully integrated tannins lend a mild firmness to the long, refined finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
    Alc. 14.5%

The colour is something akin to a black hole – so deep, opaque and impenetrable. It’s a blend of McLaren Vale shiraz and Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon, and this is just the fifth release from the first in 2012. The McLaren Vale component from the cooler Clarendon subregion brings both elegance and a vibrant middle palate, sweetness and density. The earlier ripening Coonawarra input is all about structure and definition. But this is not a bruising big wine. It is refined and elegantly presented with a brilliance and purity of fruit. Hard to put down now, but cellaring for 20 years would not be a problem. Drink 2025-2045.

Liquorice and tar. Peaty and mineralic; tight on the finish. Opens wonderfully in the glass, revealing more over an hour. I went back to this wine time and time again. A long detailed finish, yet needs five years to settle down and ten to really strut its stuff.

Isle of Raasay Dun Cana Sherry Quarter Cask Second Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 52%

Isle of Raasay's second annual Dun Cana release departs from their signature malt, exploring different cask types. For the second edition, peated and unpeated spirit is matured separately in ex-American rye casks, which previously held Woodford Reserve, before a secondary six-month maturation in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry quarter casks. The distillery says the use of the smaller 125-litre casks “accelerates the maturation process” to deepen the resulting flavours of pepper spice, sultanas, vanilla toffee and salty chocolate. The whisky is named for Dùn Cana, the highest point on Raasay, as a tribute to the landscape of the distillery’s home. 52% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Nose: Initially vanilla, followed by a few nutty aromas, including almonds, hazelnut praline, and pecan pie. Spice, ginger, and cardamom. Palate: Complex, like the nose. A few more fruit-forward notes here, like plums, berries, and peach. Almonds. Bakewell tart. Gingerbread. Finish: Long, as expected, given it is more than 50% ABV. A lingering fruitiness, which works well. Comment: Commendable in its complexity, especially with the way it merges a spicy nuttiness with a softer fruit combination. This has been crafted with skill. - whiskymag.com

Vines average age 27yo, hand-picked, bunch-sorted on vibrating tables, open-fermented with cultured yeast, 14 days on skins, matured in French barriques (25-30% new). Glorious colour; the bouquet has the complexity you expect from a 20+yo Burgundy with aromas of field and forest floor. The palate is utterly exceptional, with perfect balance and length. The multitude of flavours swirl and dance - red tree fruits, red cherry foremost, plums close behind, thence to field and forest floor, capturing wild raspberry and strawberry. Sam Middleton thinks this will be one of the all-time greats of Mount Mary, and I'm sure he is right. Drink by 2037.

Cape Byron Mac Liqueur Cask Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

Many distillers have explored secondary maturations with casks that have previously held sweet sherry and fortified wines, but not much has been done with liqueurs - let alone nut liqueurs. Now, Cape Byron Distillery is the first in the world to make a Macadamia Liqueur Cask matured Whisky, launching in 2025 with a limited release of 550 bottles. The new experiment is their most broad appeal offering to date. It almost smells like a whisky liqueur as heather honey, light peach, cantaloupe and vanilla greet the nose, matched by one of the softest deliveries ever from this distillery. Some of Cape Byron’s juicy tropical fruit character is retained, leaning towards dried banana or mango. The sweetness detracts a little from the vibrancy, making approachability rather than complexity a strong point. Regardless, if you're after a malt with a soft texture and a sweeter edge, you should find this more than satisfactory. 45% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... The liqueur has imparted decadent notes of butterscotch, coffee and dark chocolate to season ex-bourbon casks ready for maturing this malt whisky within the subtropical rainforest.

Broad, alluringly sweet and seamless in texture, offering intense black raspberry, cherry cola and bitter chocolate flavors and a suave candied rose flourish. Shows a compelling interplay of power and finesse and no rough edges. Gains spiciness with air and finishes youthfully tannic and extremely long, featuring resonating floral and tobacco notes. Jasper Hill’s Emily’s Paddock is mostly shiraz – with a defining splash of cabernet franc. A lot has been made over the years of the “terroir” difference between Jasper Hill Emily’s and Georgia’s, but it’s the cabernet franc that really differentiates them. This is a pearler. It’s a class act on all fronts. It’s rich with perfume, and powerful in the mouth, but then dry and grainy and interesting through the finish. It promises, and then delivers. Blackberry, fresh raspberries, smoky oak, eucalypt, blooms of violet and creamier, more cedary elements too. It doesn’t have any excess alcohol heat and yet it’s alive with flavour and perfume. Blew me away with its beauty.

A complex and attractive pinot that offers bright, vibrant red-cherry aromas with a gently spicy edge, aided by some well integrated oak influence. Gee, they’ve turned out a very good Pinot Noir in 2018.
Strawberries, roses, cinnamon toast and biscuits, a whisper of undergrowth. Medium-bodied, autumnal feel, a little rhubarb, coolness and ‘mineral’ feel, finesse to the acidity and supremely ‘elegant’ feel to the wine, fine graphite tannin, and a wonderfully long and fragrant strawberry and spice finish. Gee, this is a special wine. I’m smitten.

Etna in north-east Sicily is better known for its reds than whites, but the best examples of the latter, made from the local grape Carricante, can be spectacular, somewhere between a Burgundian Aligoté and a top Soave in style. This is totally unoaked, but draws richness from six months of lees’ ageing. Stony and intense, with notes of lime, fennel and lemon juice, steely, palate-cleansing acidity and a mineral tang. A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre sourced from the lower terraced parcels of the Plan de Dieu lieu-dit, in the commune of Violès. The Grenache vines are over 70 years old and come from two sites, one planted on red clay and the other on galets (smooth river-worn pebbles). The younger Mourvèdre vines are planted on sandy soil. The wine is fermented for 30 days in concrete vats, then matured for 10 months in a mix of concrete tanks and large old 50 hL oak foudres.
