Sam Kim - Wine Orbit - Papalin Haiti 4 Year Old Vatted Rum (700ml)HAITI$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 53.1%
Conceived by Velier's Luca Gargano, the Papalin project is dedicated to Caribbean styles of yesteryear, though specifically to rums of the late 1800s when Jamaican traders began to create blends from different distilleries. Myers’s and John Wray Nephew are two famous historical examples. In addition to exporting rums to Europe, they also produced their own blends, never specifying their origins. In the last seventy years an increasing number of European brands surfaced, then in the 1970s, distilleries began selling their own products. In light of all these changes, Papalin marks a return to the ancient tradition of rum blending, now with a transparency that will be welcomed by rum purists.
The label's first release was dedicated to Jamaica. The spotlight now shifts to Haiti, with a rum distilled from sugar cane juice, sourced from five different distilleries: Sajous, Vaval, Casimir, Distillerie de Port-au-Prince and Le Rocher. A total of 32 selected casks made the cut, all entirely aged in the tropical climate, with maturations taking place in ex-cognac, ex-bourbon and ex-whisky barrels. Technically, this is classified as a vatted rum. It's considered a versatile, accessible introduction to Clairin. 6000 bottles are available globally, and despite being young, its intriguing character has surprised many seasoned tasters. 53.1% Alc./Vol.

The vineyards which provided the fruit for this terrific McLaren Vale Cabernet include the Klavenick vineyard and, perhaps more interestingly, the Picnic Ground vineyard. The Picnic Ground vineyard was once owned by Thomas Hardy and was named after the picnics the family held there. The individual parcels for this wine were all fermented and matured, in older French oak, for fifteen months. Dark purple, the nose exhibits notes of plums, mocha, bay leaves, warm earth, dry herbs, mulberries and cigar boxes – lots of complexity here. This is a burly, firm style. A warm climate Cab with excellent length and firm, earthy tannins. This will be better in two years and then has a long life ahead of it, at least a good ten to twelve years, if necessary. If you are looking for a top-notch red for a gourmet barbecue, this will be perfect. Drink 2024-2036.

2023 Pierro ChardonnayMargaret River, Western Australia, AUSTRALIA$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 10 Years (2024-2034)ABV: 14%Closure: StelvinOwner and manager of Pierro Estate, Dr Mike Peterkin, has a viticultural pedigree second to none. Besides making one of Margaret River's best Chardonnay, Mike also produced the first Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend in Australia.
Fermented in French barriques, the wine goes through a full malolactic fermentation which helps achieve superior texture, mouth feel and a more refined, persistent flavour. Lees are stirred fortnightly by hand in barrel over a period of 12 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle tinge of green around the edges and a watery hue. Captivating the olfactory senses are intense white peach and nectarine aromas infused with gun flint followed by complexing notes of subtle dried honey, biscuity oak, citrus and faint roasted almond. Refined yet relatively full and textural, rich white peach, nectarine and dried honey flavours are sculptured by seamlessly integrated, bracing acidity. Intricate nuances of gun flint, delicate roasted almond, biscuity nougat and citrus lend further sophistication across the back half. Powerful and voluminous across the palate yet remarkably fresh and energetic, it finishes with exceptional length and a sense of elegance.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

This will sit alongside anything Peterkin has made in more than four decades as one of the finest winemakers in the region. It is a cracking good wine delivered with precision and power with a degree of delicacy and finesse that makes it so appealing. Incredible intensity on the nose with aromas of white peach and grapefruit with a little muted butterscotch in the background. The palate is powerful and drives with urgency through to a remarkably long finish. The oak is neatly interlaced, and the fresh acidity adds another dimension with its savoury chalky character.

RayJordanWine.com.auPierro Chardonnay be what Pierro Chardonnay be. But there’s a smidgen more finesse in this year’s release and, combined with Pierre’s trademark fruit power, the effect is quite the sensational. Pierro is one of the original (as in, it was the first) close-planted blocks in Margaret River, at 6000 vines per hectare.
Power up front; finesse through the finish. This makes well and truly sure that it has your attention and then it shows that it has both depth, and style. Pears, yellow peaches, grilled nuts and a creamy, smoky, nougat character. There’s an element of quartz to this wine, or of something stony, and it’s a part of its glory. This is a noted wine in noteworthy form. It finishes long. It’s compelling throughout. Drink 2025-2032+

I’ve tried this quite a few times because I can’t get enough of it, as it’s the most detailed and finely tuned chardonnay from Pierro to date. It is beguiling, precise and elegant. All that is backed up by excellent fruit, integrated oak, a laser-light show of acidity with some creamy-nutty lees shimmying across the palate. And the finish – wow! Lingers long. Bravo. Working at Cullen’s at the time, the wine went on to win a trophy at the Perth Royal Show. He never claimed any originality for the idea, he simply borrowed it from the French. In 1980 he was so convinced of the blend’s potential in Margaret River he devoted a third of the Pierro plantings to the varieties.
The 2023 L.T.C. is made up of 50% Semillon, 43% Sauvignon Blanc and 7% Chardonnay. Twenty five percent of the blend was fermented and matured in new and one & two year-old French oak barrels for a period of 2-3 months with the balance fermented and matured in stainless steel.
Brilliant water like colour with a distinct greenish tint to the edges. Intense passionfruit, lime and green apple scents burst out of the glass trailed by some delicate white peach and subtle grassy notes. Scrumptious passionfruit, green apple, lime and fleshy white peach fruits are underscored by mouth watering acidity. 50/43/7% semillon/sauvignon blanc/chardonnay. There’s a lot of energy and drive to this blend – it works so well. Enticing with its lemon-lime flavours, lemon zest and freshly sliced ginger/galangal. Some texture across the otherwise linear palate, electrifying acidity seals the deal.

Such a good year for white varieties and this consistently first-rate wine has delivered again, but with the addition of even more natural crunchy vibrant fruit thanks to the vintage. The palate is more intense than previous vintages but still with that structure and precision that comes with the approach of using a combination of semillon and sauvignon, with a light touch of chardonnay. This really is a terrific wine. A cracker.

2024 Pikes Traditionale RieslingClare Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$22. 99Bottle$275.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2024-2032)ABV: 11.5%Closure: StelvinPikes have long produced one of Clare Valley’s benchmark Rieslings, 2024 marking the 40th release, one which was a smooth, uninterrupted growing season that shows more forthcoming and bolder fruit whilst sacrificing nothing in terms of structure and length. Fruit is sourced predominately from the Estate’s Polish Hill River vineyard with the balance coming from growers located in the Watervale, Sevenhill, Leasingham and Mintaro districts. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel on lees for 3 months.
Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Leaping from the glass are intense lime and citrus scents which are complimented by orange rind, chalky talc and mineral notes. Zesty and racy in its feel, concentrated lime, lemon and green apple fruits fill the mouth with crisp mineral infused acidity the spine. Consistently one of the finest Rieslings from Clare, especially when you consider value for money. This vintage turned out really well for Riesling in Clare. Most of the fruit comes from Pike’s Polish Hill River vineyards with the balance from other vineyards throughout the region. There is a degree of tension yet there is power and intensity with a fine minerality and subtle citrus tang. Lovely wine for current drinking and for the cellar. Drink 2024-2034.

Ray Jordan – WinePilot.comIf there is a more reliable wine, which can provide better value than this one, anywhere in Australia, please let me know. Sourced half from estate vineyards and half from growers throughout the Clare Valley, this is the 40th consecutive release of this wine, a fine achievement. Free run juice only and then three months post fermentation on lees. A pale yellow hue, the nose exhibits typical lemon/lime aromas, with florals, grapefruit pith, river stones and oystershells. A classic Clare Riesling, everything is in place. It offers a gentle balance, with fresh acidity and impressive length. A wine which will easily see ten to fifteen years in a good cellar (I’d be prepared to put money that every single previous release, from the time they started using screwcaps more than twenty years ago, would still be drinking well – these things will rival the Californian redwoods for longevity). While the Traditionale is regularly one of the very best in its price bracket (and often well above it), The Merle never fails to sit among the very best releases of Clare Riesling, year after year, no matter what price bracket you quote. For me, this is one of our iconic Rieslings. The colour for this latest release is a near transparent lemon. The wine is elegant and refined, fresh and focused and offers drive, impeccable balance and endless length. A line of sea breeze acidity runs the length, the intensity never drops for a moment, and that freshness is still evident throughout. Fabulous stuff, this latest release is a worthy addition to the lineage. Enjoy over the next twenty years. Drink 2024-2044.

It's a supreme exercise in precision and highlights the gift that the Clare Valley subregion of Polish Hill River is to the production of this fabulous variety.
Only made in exceptional years, specific parcels were selected and it was made exactly the same as the Traditionale Riesling.
Limes, lime leaf and green apple feature large but carry themselves with fabulous humility. Lemongrass and grapefruit add detail with a river stone minerality that threads its way through the frame. Pretty white field flowers offer a fresh and vibrant aroma that calls you back time and gain.

Located in the commune of Radda, Piero Lanza and his sister, Benedetta, took over the estate from their father in the mid 1980’s and have extensively renovated the vineyards. The wines are typically full and rich yet retain beautiful elegance and perfumed fruit. They taste like Chianti should and they are always good, even in lesser years. The attention to detail in the vineyard verges on fanatical, with biodynamic farming, careful clonal selection, close planted vines, nitrogenous cover crops, extensive canopy management and hand picking to ensure the best possible combination of concentration, acidity and ripe tannins. Wild yeast fermentation, modern winemaking techniques and French oak for maturation complete the process. The resulting wine reflects these labours and is a beautifully balanced and perfumed style of Chianti.
A 100% Sangiovese aged in French barrique and tonneaux for 12 months. Inky black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Ripe red to black currant and liquorice aromas mix with earth, dried herb and spicy tobacco notes. Wine SpectatorOnce again, Poggerino’s Piero Lanza puts out one of the most successful annata of the vintage thus far. His 11 hectares in Radda sit mainly on Galestro soil with an underpinning of clay rather than sand, giving seriously structured wines. Possessing great length and a graceful, airy like feel, this is a wonderfully complex and finessed Champagne.
A fine, satiny mousse slowly subsides to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges with a generous and very fine bead flowing through to the surface. JamesSuckling.comBased on 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, the 2016 Champagne Vintage Brut is released only after 6-7 years on the lees (sur latte). This has a refined yet powerful feel and will be a wine with significant longevity and slow maturation over the next 15-20 years. Port Askaig 100 Proof Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLANDReduced from $150.00$139. 99Bottle$1679.88 DozenABV: 57.1%Jim Murray's 2017 Runner up for Best No Age Statement Whisky of the year (Multiple casks). 96.5 points.
We first tasted whiskies under the Port Askaig label several years ago and found them to be immensely appealing. These fruity-smokey styles are sourced from an "unknown Islay distillery" (word is that it's Caol Ila) and bottled by Specialty Drinks Ltd., also responsible for the "Elements of Islay" range. Port Askaig's 100 proof edition was launched in 2015 and has now been discontinued globally. "100° Proof" equates to 57.1% in the traditional system of alcohol measurement, different to the 100 proof you're more likely to see on American whiskeys.
As there's no distillery called Port Askaig, this dram has been named after the ancient ferry port and fishing harbour situated on the east coast of Islay. The whisky was matured in refill ex-bourbon casks and bottled without an age statement, though the youngest component is reported to be seven years old. The rest will be considerably older. The nose offers a classic Islay sniff: a sultry amalgam of smoke-infused brine and pepper combined with baked citrus and latent creamy vanillas. What sets this apart is the oily, mouth coating delivery, the peat perfectly tuned with the thick malt, then viscous and saline to finish, the oils oozing sooty peat with hints of cured meats and late jaffa in the aftertaste. Near 60% but you'd never know it. Of all the Port Askaigs we've tasted since, this remains the pick of the bunch and comes with the highest recommendation. Buy one to drink and another to collect. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... what perfect oak must have been deployed here. No off notes or buzz. Just the insistent and steadying hand of vanilla / butterscotch to add a gentle counter to the spice and smoke. ; just exemplary, high quality Islay; a must experience malt. If you find a more beautifully paced, weighted and elegant Islay this year, I'd really like to hear about it." 96.5 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2018
Very enjoyable, and definitely great value for money. The finish falls off a little, and it's not overly complex, but if you dig these flavours (like I do), it's definitely a winner! Pure, unadulterated Caol Ila, but nicely amplified and concentrated over the regular official bottlings. Lovely. I must admit I sometimes shy away from independent and/or mystery bottlings that I'm not familiar with, but there's no reason to do so in this case. These guys clearly know what they're doing. If you're a fan of Caol Ila but you wish they'd turn up the volume, or you've had your fill of the standard bottlings, this is a sure-fire way to satisfy that desire.

Based on traditional methods, it's produced using syrup from an ancestral Cristalline sugar cane variety from the fields of Michel Sajous, located in Saint-Michel de l’Attalaye, 150 kilometers north of the capital. Fermentation is carried out using selected yeasts and dunder from previous distillations, allowing for the development of impressive aromatic complexity. The must obtained after fermentation is distilled in two stages in a copper still, heated in a bain-marie, designed by German boilermaker Muller. The final distillate was matured exclusively in ex-Caroni rum casks for three years and then reduced to 52% before bottling. Summed up as "exotic and expressive" and declared "Robot free" on the label.
Other reviews... This was the odd one out and also a huge surprise. Considering the price tag you get a lot for your money. I found out that it needed to rest for at least 15 minutes and at 30 minutes the flavours just come at you. Intense and fruity with nice spices and cane. I really like the floral note from nose to finish and even the empty glass was wonderful after a while. - Kevin Sorensen, Rum-x.com
Notes from the producers... Nose: Rich and concentrated. Camphor, powdery, mimosa, cane sugar, vanilla, lime blossom and flambeed banana. Palate: Lively and distinguished. Fresh cane juice, lemon, resin, roasted pineapple, ginger and cinnamon. Finish: Long and silky. Rose petals, oriental notes, pastry cream, praline, tobacco, coffee and medicinal notes.

Redbreast 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey (700ml)County Cork, IRELANDReduced from $139.99$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 40%This is the world's best whiskey! Drinkstrade.com.au have reported that Redbreast 12 Year Old has won the World Whiskey Trophy at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2019. The competition awarded Redbreast 12 an impressive 98 points, narrowly beating other competitors from Australia, South Africa, Denmark, India, Taiwan and Switzerland, among many others.
The judges said: “It starts with a gorgeous nose, a fantastic composition of aromas all complementing each other. Think of roasted coffee, toffee apples, malt and warm Christmas spices. The palate is bold but very elegant with a nice balance and all in order to a great finale with dried fruits, candied oranges and sweet spices.”
For decades, serious whiskey drinkers drank Irish "blended" whiskey, mixing it with cola or adding a dash to coffee. But, John Hansell, editor and publisher of Malt Advocate magazine, says that's changing. "The line between Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky has become blurred," says Hansell, since Irish whiskey companies like Bushmills and Jameson have expanded their range to include deluxe whiskies from aged blends to pure pot stills and their own brand of single malts. "The top Irish whiskeys are just as good as many single-malt scotches. It's too bad more people aren't aware of how complex some of these whiskeys have become."
Here's a case in point. From Irish Distillers Ltd, Redbreast is a 'Single' unblended, pure pot still Irish whiskey made with malted and unmalted barley which has been triple distilled. Our tasting found powerful, sensuous aromatics, at first reminiscent of creaming soda then vanilla wafer and sweet cereals enter giving this a Bourbon slant. The entry is soft and light. Mid palate turns deliciously creamy with semi-sweet, toasty cereals and brandy cream sauce flavours superbly counterpointed by spicy, drying oak. Finishes crisp and dry with terrific length as the vanilla wafer biscuit again emerges followed by a late creme-caramel fade. An Irish with soul and distinctive style, this also offers a mouthfeel that’s uncommon. Its lightness of body combined with depth of flavour make for a terrific aperitif. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews...Very elegant, complex, and stylish. Honeyed and silky in texture, with toffee, toasted marshmallow, nougat, maple syrup, banana bread, and a hint of toasted coconut. Bright fruit and golden raisin blend in nicely with the layers of sweetness. Impeccable balance and very approachable. Classic Irish whiskey! (Value Pick) 96 points

Initially matured in traditional bourbon and sherry casks for a period of 9-12 years, this unusual Irish was finished for an additional year in first fill, hand selected sherry butts seasoned with Oloroso sherry sourced from the prestigious Bodegas Lustau in Jerez. The 120 year old sherry house Lustau originally operated as an almacenista, but now produces a broad portfolio of wine styles in Jerez. All parcels of fruit are basket pressed, then the wine spends 18 months in French oak barrels maturing.
If you like them big, bold and dense, this delivers monstrous value for the price.
Magnificent density of colour featuring a super saturated inky black heart and a near equally deep dark red black hue. Potent black cherry liqueur, liquorice and blackberry aromas completely engulf the nostrils. Some toasty vanillin oak, fennel and peppered earth notes ensue. About as rich and dense as a wine can get, an explosion of voluptuous black fruits completely douse every corner of the palate. Liqueur like in it’s texture with a firm, chewy tannin structure, notions of vanillin oak, scorched earth and peppered fennel lie underneath. The long, bold and decadent finish carrying a slightly robust feel. Hits a home run bargain.

Remarkable Cream Butterscotch Cream Liqueur (700ml)NEW ZEALANDReduced from $34.99$29. 99Bottle$359.88 DozenABV: 14%A new standard in cream liqueurs made using the finest New Zealand dairy.
Fresh cream-based liqueurs are a positive indulgence, but creating them isn't straightforward. It comes down to a stable emulsion, the skill of the producer and the quality of the ingredients. Cream liqueurs first appeared in the 1970s with Baileys leading the charge. Since then there have been plenty of imitators - some better than others. One brand that is hugely popular in New Zealand raises the bar by employing more fresh cream and less sugar. The result is a superior taste and texture that's hard to replicate with cheaper ingredients like vegetable oil, cream powder and compound emulsifiers. Remarkable Cream's success is also due to the use of New Zealand whey vodka. Whey is the liquid remaining after milk has been turned to curd and strained. It contains proteins, minerals and importantly lactose, which is concentrated, fermented and then distilled multiple times to achieve a high level of purity. The gently sweet spirit has a super smooth texture that makes a perfect base for liqueurs. Finally, to emulsify liquids that won't mix, like spirit and cream, you need specialist machinery and lots of experience, or large amounts of artificial emulsifiers. Remarkable Creams have perfected a natural way.
Besides decadent and boozy cream cocktails, the Remarkable Creams pair with festive treats like eggnog, gingerbread and baked goods. Think of a warm apple pie or a freshly baked brownie; drizzle a sauce made by gently heating Remarkable Cream Rum Espresso liqueur with a touch of cinnamon or vanilla and you instantly go from delicious to divine. If you are a culinary enthusiast, use these liqueurs to elevate truffles, tiramisu or sponge cake. Acidic ingredients (such as coffee, juice, or carbonated beverages) can be used in moderation but may cause the liqueurs to curdle. Remarkable Cream's products are gluten free. Once opened they should be refrigerated to achieve a six month shelf-life. Otherwise, after opening, they'll last about one month stored on the bar shelf.
Inspired by the distinctive toffee from New Zealand's favourite cookbook - Remarkable Cream's original Butterscotch pours a khaki brown colour and offers well-defined butterscotch aromas and flavours with secondary notes of nougat, hazelnut, vanilla and milk chocolate. It's the mid palate and finish where this takes flight: Fluffy and wonderfully creamy, with a rich butterscotch-fresh-cream feel that ends gracefully, balancing the sweetness while enabling the cream and milk vodka to shine. Even if these sorts of liqueurs are not usually your thing, you're going to find it hard to stop at one. Best enjoyed straight, preferably at -5°C (you can leave it in a freezer for a few hours) but also lends itself to cocktails, butterscotch cheesecake, brûlée or tiramisu. 14% Alc./Vol.

2024 was excellent year in the Yarra Valley, after a wet spring, summer came good with slow ripening days, resulting in lovely aromatics and wonderful intensity. This Pinot Noir was sourced from five vineyards – Harriet’s, Full Moon, Boat O’Craigo, Nenagh Park and Yarrawalla with only 10% of the Harriet’s component being whole bunch. Maturation was predominantly in seasoned hogheads and puncheons (300 & 500L).Rich, powerful and expansive Yarra Valley Pinot that over delivers.

Ron Zacapa Centenario Sistema Solera 23 Rum (1000ml)Mixco, GUATEMALA$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 40%With more 5 Star user reviews around the web than almost any product we can think of, the consensus is clear: Zacapa is a silky, sultry indulgence that will satisfy anyone who enjoys sweeter rum styles.
First launched in 1976 and famously aged 'above the clouds', two and a half kilometres above sea level among the Guatemalan mountains and volcanoes, Zacapa's Solera 23 remains the flagship of the 'La Nacional' company, which continues to produce an extensive line of products accounting for 98% of the domestic spirits market in Guatemala. The brand is now part of the Diageo group.
Unlike most rums, Zacapa is distilled from 'Virgin honey' (a.k.a. sugar cane juice), not the denser molasses. It also employs a natural yeast culture originally sourced from pineapples. However, it's Zacapa's complicated maturation that really sets it apart. New distillate is combined with around 10% older rums, then the first ageing takes place in rejuvenated x Bourbon casks for two years, after which it's blended for a second time with more old material. The process is repeated a third time, after which it's racked into sherry butts for around two years. The final stage sees a 'finishing' in Pedro Ximenez sherry butts before being blended once more and rested in a large American oak vat for six months before bottling. The age of rums in the final mix ranges from 6 to 23 years old. Given all the effort that goes into production, it's no wonder this really is an exemplary example of the spirit. Its cornucopia of flavours and moderate sweetness makes it ideal straight up as an after dinner sipper, otherwise, we recommend keeping it simple: Add a couple of ice cubes and a twist of orange peel, or include a dash of aromatic bitters to create our favourite - the Zacapa 'Old Fashioned'.
Other reviews... Copper color. Sweet, peppery spice and dried tropical fruit aromas. A round, supple entry leads to a glycerous, slightly sweet medium-full body of brown sugar, dried cherries, guava, pineapple, cinnamon, and caramelized roasted nuts. Finishes with a sweet, light molasses and ashy mineral fade. A nice, supple, and surprising sweet aged rum. Should mix brilliantly, or enjoy as an after-dinner sipper. 40% Alc./Vol.

Ron Zacapa Centenario X.O. Rum (700ml)Mixco, GUATEMALAReduced from $240.00$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 40%The crown jewel in the Zacapa line-up and the epitome of elegance in rum.
What started in the early part of the 20th century as an effort by a handful of enthusiastic entrepreneurs has evolved into a prosperous corporation with international recognition. Today the 'La Nacional' company has an extensive range of products which account for 98% of the domestic spirits market in Guatemala. Their rums marketed under the Ron Zacapa label stand out for two reasons: Instead of molasses, they're produced using sugarcane honey (fresh sugarcane juice condensed and filtered). Secondly, the rums are distilled at sea-level but aged in the town of Quetzaltenango at an elevation of 2300 metres.
Zacapa's top shelf blend of 6-25 year old rums is an exemplary example of the spirit that goes through a similar solera aging process to the popular Solera 23 with one notable exception: after a spell in ex-bourbon, ex-oloroso sherry, and ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, the final blend is finished in French oak casks previously used to age cognac (befitting of the XO moniker, but relatively meaningless in the rum world). It feels like a very old cognac or brandy on the nose with an almost ethereal lift of sticky date, dark chocolate, coffee bean and light golden syrup. The palate delights the senses with a fabulous rush of dates, molasses cake, mocha, honey, super-aged muscat and perfectly balanced spirit. The finish is drying and XO cognac-like. Tasting like a good proportion of seriously old material is in the mix, this is the epitome of elegance in rum with luxe presentation to match. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Overall, this is a cocoa-bomb rum. Look for a deep-brown hue and concentrated toffee and cocoa aromas. The flavor suggests dried figs and dates, cocoa powder and walnut, finishing with a puckery fruit-leather finish. 91 points - wineenthusiast.com
...Chestnut-amber hue. Leather, tobacco and charred molasses nose. A rich entry leads to a full-bodied, moderately sweet palate of tobacco, burnt caramel, oak and brown spice elements. Finishes for a mile with a satisfying warm afterglow of alcohol. A seriously structured and refined aged rum. Reminiscent of a fine Spanish brandy. 40% Alc./Vol. International review of Spirit Award: Gold Medal (2002) 94 points (Exceptional). - tastings.com
...This rum is a gorgeous, ruddy toffee color, perhaps a shade more amber than the standard 23. The nose, unsurprisingly, evokes more age, as well, with deeper notes of aged wine and seasoned oak that pair well with elements of dried fig, sticky prune, dark roast coffee, and creamy milk chocolate. The palate is still bright with all that citrusy, sherry-driven fruit, although a rich layer of dark brown sugar underpins things, adding a silky depth and gentle complexity. Coffee notes, nutty and lightly spiced, dominate the mid-palate before a reprisal of fruit on the long finish, this time more Cognac-driven with golden stone fruits and some poached pear. All told, it’s only a bit more impressive than the standard Zacapa 23, but that’s still saying something. A great special occasion sipping rum. If you can spare the shelf space. - drinkhacker.com

Roseisle The Origami Kite 12 Year Old (Special Release 2023) Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $159.99$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 56.5%Completed in 2010, Roseisle is a new addition to the Diageo stable, built to produce large quantities of malt for blends. Its design is also geared towards flexibility. According to Scotchwhisky.com. "Six of its seven pairs of stills can switch between stainless steel or standard (copper) shell and tube condensers. If a light grassy spirit is required, long fermentation (in excess of 90 hours) is used, along with slow distillation with air rests, and condensing in the copper condensers. Conversely, if a heavy style is needed then the stainless steel condensers will be used. The lack of extended copper ‘conversation’ will add the requisite weight to the spirit. A nutty (malty) style could also be produced by shortening mashing and fermentation regimes. The grassy style which is currently produced is different noticeably to that from other Diageo sites such as Glen Ord or Royal Lochnagar."
This special release was matured in first-fill and refill bourbon barrels. A sweet, chewy malt, it conjures notes of toasted cereals, dried grass, sponge cake and bittersweet chocolate, leavened by some attractive fruity moments through the warm, spirity finish. 56.5% Alc./Vol. Tasted from a 20ml sample.
Other reviews... This first single malt release from Roseisle has a nose of orchard and citrus fruit, with kumquat, lime, banana leaf, nectarine, red apple, and jasmine, with a touch of white pepper and vanilla oak. Buttery and fruity on the palate, with green apple, orange, lime, and plenty of spice, settling to apple, marshmallow, cotton candy, and background spices. Residual fruit, spice, and a touch of creaminess on the finish. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com
Here, I believe, is the first commercially released version of Roseisle, beyond the various samples that have been circulating since its launch in 2010. Roseisle's total capacity is 10 million LPA, which isn't huge (Glenfiddich and Glenlivet are much larger). I had the joy of visiting Roseisle with the Malt Maniacs on our 15th anniversary in 2012. Roseisle can produce very different styles, especially by using stainless steel instead of copper in the condensers, which generates thicker, less pure textures, even quite sulphurous ones, but it seems that the priority has remained with light and herbal malts, no doubt much easier to 'correct' when filled / used. Colour: golden. Nose: indeed, I find it quite herbal at the start, then more on apples and plums, then melon, nectarines, almond paste, coconut, and fresh wood. It's nice but there isn't a huge personality, we remain in the realm of the largest Speyside distilleries. With water: the same feeling. Ripe apple, beer, freshly mown lawn... Mouth (neat): very creamy, peppery and fruity at the same time, then increasingly herbal, with a bit of syrup and hops in the background. It's especially the quite thick texture that is remarkable, had they used stainless steel condensers? With water: much fruitier, a bit in the style of the strongest Californian IPAs, then more and more herbal and spicy, with a lot of green pepper and pink berries. Finish: quite long, always very spicy, a bit dominated by new wood at this stage. Pear. Comments: nothing more to say, it does the job very well, with a lot of texture. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

Royal Brackla Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $150.00$134. 99Bottle$1619.88 DozenABV: 46%Upping the value in the Sherry-matured stakes. "Excellent" - whiskyfun.com
As part of its program to make single malts available from all five of its distilleries, Bacardi subsidiary, John Dewar & Sons has been releasing a bunch of Brackla age statements since 2015. With a house style that's pedestrian and fruity, this edition offers something unexpected in the form of an Oloroso sherry cask finish. Even more importantly, it's bottled at 46% without chill filtration (the regular stuff weighs in at 40%). Here's just one of many positive customer comments about this whisky online: "... it blows away anything I've tasted from Macallan and at higher cost...probably shouldn't say all this as it might go up in price..."
Give Brackla twenty minutes to breathe and you'll definitely find similarities to Macallan Sherry Oak 12, or even Glengoyne 18YO, but it delivers more concentration and mouthfeel due to a higher abv and zero-filtration. The flavour focus falls firmly on fruity-nutty Oloroso, so less American oak intrudes to dumb-down the experience. Allspice and cocoa are capped off by tantalising suggestions of dry Guyanese rum, while the overall balance is near perfect. A hidden gem from an obscure distillery beckons...

Other reviews... Nutty on the nose, with peanut brittle, then buttered pecan and vanilla-almond ice creams. There are nice fruity notes as well, like baked red apples and Bosc pears, plus cinnamon, fresh challah, orange peel, and dried leaves. Creamy and smooth on the palate, with melted milk chocolate, tiramisu, crème brûlée, and light pepper spice. Espresso and cream highlight a lengthy and excellent finish. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...Apparently and unless I'm wrong once more, this is the new-new label, even more retro than before. This baby was finished in oloroso wood while the presentation tube would make it clear that it should display 'spice, cherries and demerara'. I believe the mistake they did with the previous rendition (round blue label) was to bottle it at 40% vol. Colour: amber. Nose: and voilà, butterscotch, praline, roasted chestnuts, chocolate (creamy Lindt's), nougat and cappuccino. No one can be against this, even if this smart treatment may have erased a part of the Distillery character. I do find gooseberries in the background, having said that. Mouth: I could copy-and-paste what I have jotted down about the nose. Milk chocolate, roasted nuts, marmalade, toffee… St. Oloroso, pray for us. Finish: rather long, very good. Coffee drops and, there, since I'm in a good mood, Demerara sugar. Seriously, Demerara sugar. Comments: amen. Excellent. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Considered the first ever 100% Asian botanical Gin, Royal Sedang is made using a long maceration of chosen botanicals in order to achieve full extraction of flavour components. Botanicals include lime, lemongrass, ginger, litchi, jasmine tea, coriander followed by a slow reduction with pure spring water. Aromatically, it's described as "...a meeting of Vietnamese and French cultures, reminiscent of entering into a fresh food market in Vietnam or enjoying a fruit breakfast at a hotel bar".
Tasting note: Clear. Asian styled aromatics leading with coriander, ginger root and lemongrass over background juniper. Second pass highlights mandarine. Soft entry with juniper and citrus, leaning towards lemon and mandarin through the tangy, spiced-up finish. Hints of coriander and pepper in a brisk aftertaste. Fresh and exotic. A pioneer in the champagne trade, the Ruinart House has stood out due to its unique know-how and history. The son of Nicolas Ruinart, brother of Dom Ruinart, himself named Nicolas, opened the companies first account book on 1st september 1729 with the following declaration, “in the name of God and the Saint Virgin shall this book be commenced.” This entry was to be the official act establishing France’s First Champagne House.
Made in the pure Ruinart tradition exclusively from the Chardonnay grape, Ruinart Blanc de Blancs reflects perfect harmony. Its striking luminosity is further enhanced by the clear glass bottle, a replica from an 18th Century model.
Good white creamy mousse with pale gold base wine colour and a very fine bead displaying excellent persistence. The nose delivers a superb complex sniff with a distinct yeasty top note followed by aromas of baked bread, brioche, cashew and toast. The palate is quite rich for a Blanc de Blancs displaying very refined flavours of baked bread, yeast lees and cashew with a light toast overlay. Creamy texture with excellent length. Although this has some red-berry aromas from pinot noir, the pear, white-peach and white-floral aromas are central, and they surely come from the chardonnay grape. Excellent balance of fresh fruit, animating acidity and creaminess, the mousse keeping it moving steadily across the palate through the very clean finish. A cuvée of 45% chardonnay, 45% pinot noir and 10% pinot meunier. Drink or hold.

Santa Teresa 1796 Ron Antiguo de Solera Rum (700ml)VENEZUELA$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 40%A new Venezuelan Beauty that's easily in the leading pack as one of the top rum values on our shelves.
Created to commemorate the distillery's 200th anniversary, this rum is matured in a French Limousin oak solera system for 8-12 years (a method borrowed from the Spanish sherry producers) and is the first premium anejo rum in the world to be aged using such a technique. With some portions reportedly in barrel for more than fifteen years, Santa Teresa delivers all the substance and style of Diplomatico's Reserva Exclusiva, only the profile is less sweet, the result is more elegant - even 'Cognac-esque'.Tasting notes: Deep copper. Sensuous bouquet offers a superb amalgam of vanilla, hazelnut chocolate, creme caramel and cream sponge cake. Fine tuned with perfect sweet-dry balance including flavours of bounty bar, mocha, caramel fudge finishing with a lingering white pepper, dried banana, buckwheat pancake and cocoa aftertaste. First class. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The first couple of whiffs pick up toasty notes of caramel, almond butter, cotton candy and very old oak; with aeration, more profound aromas develop including saddle leather, vanilla, Sherry and dark caramel. Palate entry is perfectly balanced and sweet; by midpalate the flavor profile is honeyed, slightly cocoa-like, buttery to the feel and utterly decadent. Finishes long, layered, creamy and dark chocolate bittersweet. 98 points - wineenthusiast.com
Deep amber color with an olive cast. Elegant aromas and flavors of toasted nuts, coffee gelato, dried tropical fruits and pepper with a satiny, medium-to-full body and lots of toffee, vanilla bean, and sweet tobacco notes of the long finish. A delicious, smooth, and artfully balanced aged rum for sipping, cigars, or world-class cocktails.

JamesSuckling.com“Aww, nectar”, quips GW. We’re drinking this in the sun with our shirts off in our y-fronts and foil reflectors under our chins with cucumber rounds on our eyes. How moscato should be drunk.
It’s brilliant drinking, peachy iced tea, a little loose, wild honey character, some preserved lemon, a lick of chalky minerality too in a light pucker somewhere in there. Refreshing, clean, quite concentrated and with very light frizz of tickly bubbles barely there. A vibrant, expressive and true-to-style rendition. “Needs some ice”, GW says as he rolls over to sun his bum. Perfect. Drink 2023-2025.

1991 Signatory Vintage 35th Anniversary Highland Park 32 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Orkney Islands, SCOTLAND$1299. 00Bottle$15588.00 DozenABV: 53.4%"...there is a commendable ruggedness in this old Highland Park." - whiskyfun.com
Sourced from a first-fill Oloroso sherry butt and released in celebration of Signatory`s 35th birthday, this 32-year-old promises an HP of a very high standard, balanced and complex, combining delicate oranges and dark chocolate complementing the sooty peat. One taster commented, "It's unbelievable how much smoke a Highland Park can still have after so long in the barrel. I would have blindly put it on Islay. Impressive dram!" (whiskybase.com). Pay nearly twice the price for the official 30 year old! The yield was 557 bottles at 53.4% Alc./vol. Non chill filtered. Extremely limited.
Other reviews... To my generation of whisky enthusiasts, so the youngsters, right, Signatory was and remains a very seminal bottler. The whisky world would be completely different without Signatory, perhaps still full of caramel and heavily cold-filtered uisge beatha. We owe a lot to Andrew and Signatory. Colour: deep gold. Nose: starts with a little cider or Sauternes-sulphur, with some hops, leaves, walnut skins, some gunpowder, then we have oil paint, clay, mushrooms, mustard à l'ancienne, pickled gherkins… I have to say this is a little intriguing and rather very Andalusian. Let's see how it evolves… With water: cigars, cedarwood, figs and forgotten vegetable gratin. Parsnip, swede, cardoon… Mouth (neat): walnuts roasted in honey sauce and quite some gunpowder again. Chocolate, white truffles, touch of pointed cabbage and bok choy. Some demerara sugar. With water: awesome salted praline and nougat, earth, walnut liqueur, amaro… Finish: long and rather all on walnut wine. A little mustard, grapefruit, roasted chestnuts and pecans in the aftertaste. Comment: there is a commendable ruggedness in this old Highland Park. It seems like a real sherry cask, which held actual sherry, actually intended for human consumption. It improves with exposure to air, it just needs quite some time. Yet another 91-pointer. 91 points - whiskyfun.com
