From a very well-known family owned estate with an Italian-Australian heritage, this McLaren Vale winery burst onto the scene in the early 2000’s when the then, world's most powerful wine critic, Robert Parker, lauded many of the wines with scores in the high nineties.
This, their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, is made in the traditional Amarone style whereby the grapes are dried to concentrate the aromas and flavours, as well as soften the tannins.

A powerhouse Cabernet made in the traditional Amarone style.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a very dark brick red hue. Wafting out of the glass is a complex array of morello cherry, black cherry, liquorice, cassis and black plum scents which are trailed by some vanillin cedar, cinnamon and spicy tobacco notes. Rich, concentrated and voluptuous in its feel across the thick, weighty palate are all engulfing morello cherry, blackcurrant, black cherry, liquorice and black plum fruits. Vanillin cedar, earth, sweet tobacco and spicy cinnamon elements lie beneath. Initially silky tannins firm up on the back half, providing admirable structure. Boasting outstanding power and depth, the long, plush yet sturdy conclusion is delivered with plenty of sophistication.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

You’d think they were crazy making an Amarone style from cabernet sauvignon. Amarone is one of Italy’s greatest wines made from dried grapes which concentrate the flavours and tannins to create long lived wines. But with cabernet sauvignon – a wine that is already loaded with tannins – this is surely a disaster in the making, but apparently not….
This is a gorgeous wine, and my pick of the current new releases, which packs a serious punch. The colour is deep suggesting a big dense style but the wine is surprisingly light on its feet. Sweet, pure and vibrant blackcurrant fruits are tempered by dried herbs with some sweeter blackberry underneath. Oak is there too but sits in the background. This then leads to a bold and explosive palate full of power and energy – fruit pastille flavours are supported by fine acidity that is all underpinned by significant but well handled tannins. It is soooooo long too with the fruit concentration holding that flavour for minutes. A delicious wine stacked full of personality that is hard to put down. Drink 2023-2032.

The 2019 ******* Cabernet Sauvignon is made from partially dried grapes. After being air-dried for approximately nine weeks and losing approximately 30% of their weight, the grapes are pressed. The resulting wine is a potent, cassis and herb-laced offering with hints of dark chocolate and caramel yet never heavy or overdone. Full-bodied, rich and possessing a layered texture and a lingering finish, it's a terrific example of *******, with at least a decade of cellaring potential. Drink 2021-2030.

Joe Czerwinski – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

The wine shows stunning fruit purity as well as seductive complexity with cassis, sweet plum, tobacco and spicy oak characters. It’s impressively concentrated and persistent, displaying awesome power brilliantly structured by loads of fine tannins. Multi-layered and graceful. At its best: 2024 to 2039.

Without a doubt this estate is one of the leading exponents of Malbec in Australia. Having been growing it since the late 1800’s they first produced Malbec as a table wine in 1961. The fruit for this wine was sourced from three estate vineyard blocks and two specialist growers with maturation taking place in a mix of new (10%) and seasoned French oak puncheons for a period of 12 months.

Rich, blue fruit driven and fleshy textured yet elegant, this is a textbook Malbec with accolades galore.

Pitch black in colour with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Pronounced ripe blueberry, plum and dark cherry aromas intermingle with hints of liquorice, dried herbs, earth, subtle vanillin cedar and spice. Rich and fleshy textured yet elegant, blueberry, dark plum and red liquorice fruits are layered across the mid weighted palate. Charming the back half are dried herb, dusty earth and spicy cedar characters. Slightly dryish fine grained tannins provide an excellent framework. Driven by blue fruit it finishes fresh, refined and long. Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Winner of 3 trophies and numerous gold medals.

The fruit comes from three estate blocks and two specialist growers; open fermented with 20% whole berries; on skins eight to 12 days; matured for 12 months in French puncheons (10% new). Deeply coloured, the bouquet and palate hunt as one, with intense aromas of black fruits and clove spice joined by plums on the unexpectedly elegant palate. **** is the king of Malbec. Drink by 2040.

Selling for $45 ex cellar door, it was matured in French oak with winemaking under the skillful direction of Larry Cherubino.

An elegant style that doesn’t forfeit flavour or depth to get there. Expect cassis, mulberries, lots of herbs, black olive and cedary oak infusing the more mid-weighted palate. Fine tannins match the acidity to lengthen the finish. Drink by 2037.

Yalumba’s Robert Hill Smith and Louisa Rose of Pewsey Vale & Heggies fame are intrinsically linked with Eden Valley Riesling. They had also long admired the potential of Tasmanian Riesling, so when the opportunity came up to work with a unique site of mature Riesling vines they jumped at it.
The Parish of Sorell is located 13km east of Tasmania’s Coal River. It’s cool maritime climate and mineral-rich soils, creates optimal conditions for producing intensely flavoured Riesling with slaty acidity.

A scintillating Tassie Riesling - intensely flavoured, pure and pristine.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged surrounding edges. Intense lime and Granny Smith apple aromas leap out of the glass followed by some lemon, wet steel and chalky mineral notes. Scrumptious lime, lemon and green apple fruits are underpinned by sizzling acidity which has a distinct flinty theme to it. Dry steely back drop with some chalky elements also evident. The long snappy finish threaded with a distinct minerality. A perfect match with a plate of fresh Tassie oysters.

Pikes have long produced one of Clare Valley’s benchmark Rieslings, 2024 marking the 40th release, one which was a smooth, uninterrupted growing season that shows more forthcoming and bolder fruit whilst sacrificing nothing in terms of structure and length. Fruit is sourced predominately from the Estate’s Polish Hill River vineyard with the balance coming from growers located in the Watervale, Sevenhill, Leasingham and Mintaro districts. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel on lees for 3 months.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Leaping from the glass are intense lime and citrus scents which are complimented by orange rind, chalky talc and mineral notes. Zesty and racy in its feel, concentrated lime, lemon and green apple fruits fill the mouth with crisp mineral infused acidity the spine. Also evident are some subtle chalky talc and wet steel elements. Showing good tension it finishes dry, long and scrumptious.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Consistently one of the finest Rieslings from Clare, especially when you consider value for money. This vintage turned out really well for Riesling in Clare. Most of the fruit comes from Pike’s Polish Hill River vineyards with the balance from other vineyards throughout the region. There is a degree of tension yet there is power and intensity with a fine minerality and subtle citrus tang. Lovely wine for current drinking and for the cellar. Drink 2024-2034.

If there is a more reliable wine, which can provide better value than this one, anywhere in Australia, please let me know. Sourced half from estate vineyards and half from growers throughout the Clare Valley, this is the 40th consecutive release of this wine, a fine achievement. Free run juice only and then three months post fermentation on lees. A pale yellow hue, the nose exhibits typical lemon/lime aromas, with florals, grapefruit pith, river stones and oystershells. A classic Clare Riesling, everything is in place. It offers a gentle balance, with fresh acidity and impressive length. A wine which will easily see ten to fifteen years in a good cellar (I’d be prepared to put money that every single previous release, from the time they started using screwcaps more than twenty years ago, would still be drinking well – these things will rival the Californian redwoods for longevity). Drink 2024-2039.

The 2024 Traditionale Dry Riesling is dry and succulent, with ripe lime and Granny Smith apple, lemon pith and white pepper. This is magnificently delicious, with talc-like phenolics that shape the mid-palate and long finish. It is an excellent value for money, at $28 AUD / $17 USD. 11.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Rich, deep and powerful yet refined and silky with great structural attributes and a blackpepper laced finish.

Released in small quantities and only in exceptional years, St Peters is Seppelt’ s flagship shiraz. The lineage of this iconic wine dates back to 1964, when ‘great western hermitage’, as it was then known, was first made. Since 1998 this wine has been called St Peters in honour of the first vineyard planted in the region.
Impenetrable inky black core with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Expressive blackpepper infused aromatics of dark plum, liquorice and black cherry flow through the olfactory senses followed by spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and scorched earth notes. Rich, deep and powerful yet refined and silky in it’s movement across the palate, plush black cherry, liquorice and dark plum fruits are featured over a scorched earth, graphite, spicy vanillin cedar and blackpepper background. Great structure with polished, seamlessly integrated tannins and a long, generously fruited, blackpepper laced finish.
Drink over the next 10-12 years.

At the risk of repeating myself, this is one of my very favourite Australian Shiraz. I love it. Always have. Love the perfumed aromatics that get things started. Vibrant ripe cherry and blackberry notes, with a liberal coating of dark chocolate. Traces of cracked black pepper and graphite emerge with breathing. Managing the oak is fundamental to St Peters and winemaker Clare Dry uses an old French vat, older barriques and just 24% new oak. Interestingly, Dry also uses a small amount of whole bunch ferment which appears as the slightly flinty palate characters. Another cracking good wine. Drink by 2024-2049.

A blend of fruit off four blocks in Seppelt Great Western vineyards. Fermentation includes whole bunch (10%), maturation in French oak (24% new). The second St. Peters release under Clare Dry, who has instigated a reduced new oak regime, allowing beautifully fragrant, compelling fruit to shine. Demands your attention in heady scents of wildflower, bay leaf, black cherry, blackberry and spice. Keeps the momentum up with complexity on the rise and the odd side step into savouriness, as the palate unwinds in peppery black fruits, woodsy earth and Grampians-led bright spices. Drink by 2041.

Other reviews... Linkwood A was the original distillery with production starting around 1824/1825. In 1971, a second facility, Linkwood B, was built next to it to increase production capacity. From 1971 to 1985, both Linkwood A and B operated in parallel. In 1985, the original distillery was permanently closed (and demolished around twelve years ago) and only Linkwood B remained active. Everything we’re going to taste, then, comes from Linkwood B, except the last one... They’ve really become the emperors of sherry at Signatory over the past couple of years, haven’t they, with some rather prime space left vacant by certain major Speyside distilleries. Colour: mahogany. Nose: this is the expected style, cedarwood, touches of graphite, chocolate, umami notes, a lovely meaty character, and some proper Corinthian raisins… With water: in come mentholated and camphory touches, though the cedar stays firmly in place. Pencil shavings. Mouth (neat): oh, very good, more on the earthy side, black pepper, liquorice, walnut liqueur (big time) … With water: even more powerful, loaded with spices and wood extracts, yet oddly enough, balance has been struck. Finish: long, almost thick, still on pepper and cedarwood. Comments: this one really speaks volumes. Definitely a bottle to cellar for, say, thirty years, just to smooth out the corners. "Very elegant, no overpowering sherry. The subtle, soft Tomintoul profile is noticable." - whiskybase.com

A cracking value sherry matured malt from a relatively obscure distillery known for a softer style distillate and promoting itself as â€œThe Gentle Dram". Some tasters at whiskybase who were lucky enough to try this against the classic Glenrothes 30YO (in the same shipment) found this to be their preference, especially after about 30-40 minutes in the glass. "Elegance" is the recurring descriptor. Unfortunately, we couldn't secure enough to satisfy more than a handful of customers. Three decades in a first-fill Oloroso Sherry butt yielded 565 bottles at natural strength. 50.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Very elegant, no overpowering sherry. The subtle, soft Tomintoul profile is noticable. Notes of old leather, wood polish, candied oranges, soy sauce. Some dried red fruit sweetness. Finish is warming. And everything is subtle and elegant. Very good this. - whiskybase.com

It's been a long time since a Glenrothes as spectacular as this appeared on our shelves. Despite recent price increases, the consensus is that this is about as good as it gets for a standard distillery release. We're not alone in noting how wonderfully complex it is for a ten year old. Prolific whisky writer, Serge Valentin from whiskyfun.com rates it as one of his desert island malts. Its style is summed up by Ingvar Ronde, the editor of the Malt Whisky Yearbook as "fresh & briny on the nose, with citrus fruit, oak and barley, plus a note of damp earth, then sweet on the palate, with developing brine, nuttiness, vanilla toffee, coconut oil and drying peat." Every sip makes you understand why Springbank is special. Bourbon casks are primarily used, allowing the distillery character to shine through. Sherry casks are also employed for added body. The ratio usually falls around 60% / 40%, but that can vary between releases. It's this whisky that continues to set the bar for everything else Springbank make - and it does so with aplomb. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... [+/- 2024 bottling] Colour: white wine. Nose: I get the impression that SB 10 is becoming increasingly earthy, dirty, laden with soot, basalt, oyster shells, slightly rancid olive oil, mustard, slags, and various yeasts—everything we love, though it’s perhaps not quite to your new neighbour’s taste, just to be clear. SB 10 will never replace a good, easy Champagne blanc de blancs (not entirely sure about that last remark, S.). Mouth: austere, intensely saline, peppery, even dirtier on the palate, with striking bitterness and that unmistakable oily texture. Grilled aubergines come close, before lemon peel and a generous glass of fino sherry ride to the rescue. And it’s not the first time one gets the impression they’ve poured a bit of Longrow into the vatting tank. Finish: long, with that wonderfully discordant sensation of an oily yet razor-sharp malt. The aftertaste is saline, peppery, mezcal-like, and lemony. Comments: perhaps it’s that untamed, uncommercial edge that makes this so sought after. Go figure; we, of course, adore it, as ever.

One of Coonawarra’s benchmark Cabernets from an outstanding vintage.

Renown as one of Coonawarra’s benchmark Cabernets, Wynns John Riddoch is made from parcels of the estates best fruit and is only produced in exceptional vintages.
Outstanding colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with a very deep dark red black hue. Soaring out of the glass are captivating aromas of blackcurrant, liquorice and mulberry which are complimented by vanillin cedar, tobacco, subtle earth, violet and traces of bay leaf. Rich and concentrated yet refined and structured, the medium to full bodied palate is redolent in fleshy red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry fruits. Lending further complexity are spicy vanillin cedar, earth, delicate tobacco and bay leaf accents. Fine grained, sturdily built tannin framework yet quite polished in it’s feel. Marrying finesse with power it finishes very long and eloquent with a deep core of fruit.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.

16 months French oak hogsheads and barriques (31% new, the balance one to six years old) and 22 months in bottle prior to release. A cacophony of blackberries, Bing cherries and elderberries. Blackcurrant leaf, acaĂ and prune skin. Black coffee, vanilla pod, ash and charcoal. Acidity wisps about the palate like magic, a mesh of thread-like tannins pull and draw the focus. A hint of dark chocolate bitters; the wine finishes perky with echoing tunes of granite. It's just so centered and chic. Pure cabernet poise. Drink by 2038.

Shanteh Wale – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The 2021 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is a brilliant wine. It is achingly intense yet is defined by its levity, which is not a common attribute in Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine expounds the virtues of the red gravel in which the fruit was grown, via its iodine and crushed shells, cassis and blood, sweet marrow and tobacco. It tastes so clearly of the place, which is a wonderful thing. The back palate swells with flavor, framed by the earth and the attuned oak. This is a tribute to the earth, an ode to it. Plentiful tannins bob along on the current of fruit. This will cellar interminably. It's up there in both quality and feel with the 2010, or so I think. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2051.

One of the best vintages in Coonawarra for many years. Little wonder this release of the John Riddoch is one of the best since the initial release from the 1982 vintage. Aromas of violets and red berry with a slightly cherry glaze character adding further intrigue. The palate is medium weight and refined but with tremendous power and persistence. A combination of hogsheads and barriques has been used to deliver the perfect level of oak. One of the best of these I can recall. Drink 2024-2054.

This 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Wynns John Riddoch is stylish and built for the long haul. It takes a couple of days to show its true colors. It radiates with blackcurrant, gravel and dried mint aromas, with a dusting of earth all wrapped up in a gentle blanket of French oak. Composed and super refined, the wine is underpinned by a line of seductive yet firm tannins with killer length and balance to finish. It is already very approachable but with serious staying power. Drink 2030-2045.
