From the outstanding 2021 vintage, one of the world’s pre-eminent wine critics, Antonio Galloni’s Vinous Media, recently scored this wine a whopping 98 points. To put this into context, they scored the 2021 Penfolds Grange 97 points and 2021 Henschke Hill of Grace 98 points, both priced at around $1000 per bottle. At just $54.99, that makes this wine a vinous bargain by any measure.
Rich, plush and incredibly long yet not overbearing, this is a superb marriage of opulence and finesse.
Pitch black heart with a very deep dark purple black tinged hue. Wafting through the nostrils with great potency are aromas of dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate which are complemented by some blackberry, vanillin cedar, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, plush and incredibly long, cascading waves of dark plum, liquorice, blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate fruit saturate the full bodied palate. Layered across the back half are notions of spicy vanillin cedar and earthy mocha elements. Exceptionally concentrated and powerful yet refined it has seamlessly integrated, velvet smooth tannins. The expansive finish, a marriage of opulence and finesse.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

The 2021 Shiraz Avenue to Gold slowly reveals beautifully composed and even aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, red licorice and touches of dried herbs, all wrapped up in a cocoon of fine French oak. Its seamless, satiny texture enhances powerful and energetic flavors that are both youthful and refined. Firm yet fine tannins drive the long, impressive finish. This is absolutely great but needs time to flower. Drink 2032-2042.

Bladnoch The Dragon Series Iteration V The Decision Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Lowlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $220.00$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 53.1%"the sweetest and most expressive of the whole series..." - whiskybase.com
The iteration with the highest ABV at 53.1%, also marks the final instalment in Bladnoch's five part series. The Decision hones in on the skills involved in the sample room where the decisions are made for the final blends. Here, all the variabilities and unpredictabilities are considered and weighed against each other, with an eye on future prospects and a commitment to delivering a consistent and sustainable whisky experience. Sourced from a blend of Hungarian Tokaji wine casks and Spanish Canasta Sherry casks, says one taster, "It's a bit like mulled wine and gingerbread. Sweet and dry at the same time. Exciting." (whiskybase.com).
Other reviews... This whisky is the sweetest and most expressive of the whole series, but with the surprisingly driest finish of all. It is quite sharp alcoholic thanks to the higher proportion of alcohol, but at the same time there is something gingerbread spicy and quite distinct sweet sherry... I quite liked it. I'm glad that I could pre-taste the entire Dragon series, but at the same time I'm glad that I didn't buy the whole bottles or the whole set... - whiskybase.com

Chivas Regal 25 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $499.00$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 40%"Quite brilliant. Maybe just one sherry butt away from what would almost certainly have been among the top three whiskies of the year." - 95.5 points Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024.
After a 98 year absence, Chivas Regal 25 returned in 2007. A homage to the first ever Chivas Regal blend, first released in 1909, single malt from the Strathisla distillery, Speyside is said to contribute its defining sweetness. The heady bouquet offers a sublime medley of fruits and nuts, dark chocolate, nougat and vanilla. An exceptionally pure, soft, svelte textured delivery possesses remarkable vibrancy for a whisky of its ilk. Stewed fruits combine with lively spices, cocoa and vanilla wafer biscuit followed by a finish that's long and fresh, almost peppermint like, with hints of spice and cocoa persisting. Breed, length and balance combine in this regal blend, demonstrating what extra aged Scotch is all about. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews...Nose: Exotic fruit of the first order: some pretty serious age here, seemingly older than the 25 years (23.5) Taste: Mesmerisingly two-toned, with a beautiful delivery of velvety grains contrasting stunningly with the much firmer, cleaner malts. Softly chewable, with a gentle spice fizz as the vannilla begins to mount; unbelieveably juicy and mouth-watering despite its advanced age. (23.5) Finish: Long, wonderfully texturedand deft; some cocoa underlines the oak involvement, but there is not once a single hint of over-ageing. (24) Balance: unadulterated class where the grain-malt balance is exemplary and the deft intertwining of well-mannered oak and elegant barley leaves you demanding another glass. Brilliant! A polished nose of red apple, cinnamon, caramels, and salted almonds makes for an enticing prospect on this showpiece dram. The taste exemplifies smoothness. The indulgent palate comprises dark cooked fruits, coffee, malty cocoa, sticky toffee pudding, fudge, and a fine line of orange. Roll it around the mouth: the integrated aged grains enable these select malts to achieve their full flavor potential. An exceptionally long finish has remnants of that toffee pudding and a well-sucked aniseed ball. Treat yourself.

It’s predominantly floral, with fruit and notes (apple, almond), and a light finish that you’re not expecting, given the deep orange/amber of the drink itself. This is a gorgeous Scotch as good as any single malt I’ve had. (And considering the price tag, it better be.) - drinkhacker.com

Barrel fermented and matured in a combination of seasoned and new French oak barriques, puncheons and vats. A light, bright green gold. Gee, Andrew Fleming and the team have a lovely touch when it comes to making chardonnay. Gentle aromas of nashi, just-ripened nectarines and a hint of vanillin spice. Longrow 100 Proof Batch No.1 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Campbeltown, SCOTLAND$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 57.1%"long, and highly maritime... a great success, with the pinot noir element now little more than an anecdote." - whiskyfun.com
The new Longrow 100 Proofs succeed the Longrow Red series. Released in annual batches, we have just received Batch No.1 from 2025. Wine finishes and Longrow have always been provocative and divisive amongst Springbank fans. It seems the distillery has taken note. Aged for four years in refill bourbon oak and finished for two years in refill Pinot Noir barrels, here, the auburn tinge often associated with the 'Red' series is almost indiscernible, the wine influence kept to a minimum due to second-fill casks. Regardless of whether or not you like the style, because this is 'Batch One', it probably means it won't be on the shelves for long. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... The Longrow Red releases had both fans and haters. I wouldn’t count myself amongst either camp, but I’ve tried a few that I really liked, even though I generally don’t seek out wine matured single malts. I certainly tend to agree with Longrow in general, so there’s no good reason why the new Longrow 100 Proof shouldn’t suit me. Not too bad actually, although it might not be the most accessible whisky I've tried. This signifies a new chapter for Longrow, and it's certainly not a bad start. Yet, it's not entirely up to Springbank's standards either, is it? Longrow Red has always been a bit hit and miss. I'm curious to see how subsequent batches of the 100 Proof will work out. - wordsofwhisky.com
...This is in fact the follow-up to the well-known ‘Red’ series which, generally speaking, had left us rather cold, as the combination of peat and red wine often evoked something like coffee and mustard mixed together – the sort of concoction we used to dish out to freshers when I was a boy scout. However, in this case, although it is pinot noir, the fact that it’s second fill does offer some reassurance. Let’s see… Colour: pale gold (victory!) Nose: no cherries, no blackcurrants, no raspberries, no woodland mushrooms, no hare pâté, and no Russian leather. Hurrah! This is more of a clean, taut Longrow, very much in the vein of those solid NAS entry-level bottlings, which are always rather good – something like a Campbeltown mojito. Lemon, seaweed, smoke, beach sand and fresh garden mint, along with a faint yeasty note (which likely betrays its youth). With water: amaretti and wood-fired white bread. Virgin wool and a touch of chalk in the background. Mouth (neat): some hints of cherry-stem herbal tea but well removed from the lees of chambertin or Bollinger. More pepper, lemon zest, a dash of tarragon, grapefruit (not even the pink kind!) With water: tinned sardines appear, along with lemon and even a splash of olive oil. Finish: fairly long, and highly maritime. One might as well be standing on a fishing quay. Comments: a great success, with the pinot noir element now little more than an anecdote. We’re rather pleased. 88 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the producers... Nose: The peat smoke influence presents in medicinal, tcp notes, along with notes of redcurrants on the nose. Palate: Softer on the palate, the peat smoke has a more earthy, musty element now, with notes of creme brulee, vanilla and almonds. Finish: Red cola cubes, strawberry laces and marzipan are at the forefront of the smoky Longrow finish. Although the origins of 100° proof are often contested, it is widely agreed to have hailed from Britain in the 17th century when excise taxes were based on alcohol strength, thus “proof” of strength became a requirement. The process for testing and proving strength involved pouring the spirit on to gunpowder and subsequently taking a flame to the gunpowder, with an explosion indicating that the spirit was “over proof”, failure to ignite indicating that it was “under proof”, and a steady flame burning indicating the spirit was “100 proof”. The 19th century saw the development of a new, scientific calculation of strength devised by Bartholomew Sikes, who measured specific gravity of spirit and defined 100 proof strength as 4/7 alcohol purity, or 57.1% ABV. Since the USA proof system works differently, proof is considered double the ABV, or 50%. This whisky is therefore known as 114 proof in the US market.

2021 Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico RiservaTuscany, ITALY$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)ABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkDeep, concentrated and bright with sturdy tannins and a long, generously fruited yet rustic finish.
The 2021 vintage is considered to be one of the best vintages ever in Chianti producing wines of power and elegance. Sourced from Antinori’s Tignanello estate, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico, the wine is produced primarily from Sangiovese with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot also included in the blend. Maturation takes place in French and Hungarian oak barriques for approximately one year.
Midnight black heart with a deep dark red hue. A mix of red to black currant scents sail through the olfactory senses with some red cherry, earth, tobacco and spicy dried herb notes then ensuing. Mid weighted the palate is awash with rich red to black currant and dark cherry fruits. Notions of earth, dried herbs, dusty cedar, tobacco and spice lend further complexity. Deep, concentrated and bright it possesses a sturdy tannin structure which lends some grip onto the long, generously fruited yet rustic finish.

Wine SpectatorMarchesi Antinori General Manager Renzo Cotarella tells me that 2021 is the best vintage he has ever overseen. Ever. He prefers it to recent classics like 2016 and 2010. There was frost in the spring, and the growing cycle was very long. This is something that most grapes, and especially Sangiovese, need in order to exhibit aromatic depth and flavor complexity. "This is an exceptional year," he says, citing the inner energy certainly exhibited by the wines from 2021.
I agree, mostly, but not unequivocally. I love the precision and tension inherent to these wines, but I didn't encounter that same breathless vertical lift and linearity that I remember so well in 2016, for example. That was a vintage that managed to effortlessly balance both power and elegance, which is by no means an easy feat. To me, 2021 has the elegance but not the same piercing power that you only get in cooler vintages when sugar and phenolic ripening line up seamlessly. So, while I love these wines, especially the Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori and the outstanding Tignanello, my money is still on 2016 as the better vintage, speaking generally. But zoom in on one wine and my money is on the 2021 Tignanello over everything else.
This is one of the big surprises of this tasting and ultimately represents one of the best buys in the entire extended Marchesi Antinori portfolio. The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori shares the DNA of Tignanello. It is Sangiovese kissed with small parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Of course, the wine is more accessible and open compared to Tignanello, and spiritually, this wine is a Chianti Classico. By that I mean that the elegant minerality of these soils and the sunny flavors of its environs are the determining characteristics. You get wildflower, iris, tart fruit and plum. The wine's enhanced mineral character, with dusty white rock, is what adds lasting complexity and depth. Drink 2024-2033.

This southernmost part of Puglia is also Italy’s easternmost area with dark red soils and abundant Mediterranean sunshine. The climate is mild in winter, with adequate rainfall, but it is also very hot in summer with little rainfall. This wine represents the new winemaking approach in Puglia, with more moderate alcohol levels and gentler extractions. Negroamaro loves hot and dry conditions, and it grows particularly well in the calcareous, high-limestone soils of the area.

Chairman's Reserve The Forgotten Casks Rum (700ml)SAINT LUCIAReduced from $119.99$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%The (accidentally) extra-aged version of a St. Lucia classic.
On May 2nd 2007 St. Lucia Distillers was struck by a major fire which destroyed the administration and blending facility. Mercifully most of the distillery was spared but suffered great problems with storage space for the casks. In the melee that followed cellar master, Mr. Cyril Mangal, was forced to find space for ageing casks in the most unusual places. Having done so the cellar team had a memory lapse and forgot the casks that had been laid down for the Chairman's Reserve. These casks were later discovered and upon tasting were found to contain a wonderfully complex rum which was decided to offer as a limited release.
A blend of Coffey and pot still rums, initial maturation took place in American white oak casks - Jim Beam, Jack Daniels and Buffalo Trace - separately by still. After blending, the rum was reintroduced to oak for a further five years. The standard Chairman’s Reserve is around 3 to 5 years old. This is apparently a combination of 6-11 year old material. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... On the palate, this one is undeniably “rummy,” and a bit more boozy than you’d likely expect for the subdued proof point. Molasses and very dark toffee lead off, but once again this is quite fruity, with a combination of notes that range from the brighter red fruit of cranberry and cherry to dried fruit notes of raisin or prune. Fine oak spices then enter the picture, as do baking spice notes of clove and ginger. Again, I find myself thinking of boozy Christmas fruitcake, as the ethanol adds a slightly antiseptic character that perhaps knocks the enjoyment here down just a tad. All in all, this is a rich and fruit-driven aged rum that will definitely play well in cocktails calling for that kind of character, but it doesn’t quite have the complexity and array of flavors present in the Chairman’s Reserve 1931—in particular, the more earthy tones and the dark chocolate/coffee likely added by that expression’s port barrel aging. The Forgotten Casks is somewhat more straightforward than that, but it certainly packs a respectable punch for a mere 80 proofer. - pastemagazine.com

Talisker 10 Year Old Gift Pack with Mug Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Isle of Skye, SCOTLAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 45.8%Talisker 10YO super buy! Includes a bonus Talisker branded mug to take camping.
'The lava of the Cuillins' - that's how Talisker, the Golden Spirit of Skye was described by one poetic taster: the only single malt from a spectacularly beautiful island of wild moorlands and dramatic mountain peaks known as the Cuillins. Built in Carbost in 1831 near 'Talisker House', the distillery has entertained such personalities as Boswell & Johnson. Another celebrity who enjoyed his Talisker was author, Robert Louis Stevenson, describing it in 1880 as 'king 'o' drinks'. Stevenson rightly recognised it as bearing similarities to both the Glenlivet and Islay malts. However, by taking 'the best of both worlds' so to speak, it achieved a unique style. In 1892 Roderick Kemp, a part owner sold his share to establish the now-immortal Macallan. Talisker has continued strong since under the ownership of Diageo. An individual malt that remains an island classic, Talisker invariably offers a great sniff. At ten years old, the aromas are pungent-yet-fresh with Islay-like seaweedy smokiness and sweet fruity malt. There's a bold maritime influence on the palate too, perfectly complemented by a spicy, very peppery lingering finish. A little honey threads its way through the beautifully balanced spirit. Not harsh but warming. Always satisfying to re-discover this West Highland gem. 45.8% Alc./Vol.
A quite stupendous malt to be enjoyed at any time. But especially at night. - 93 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019
...Another that should need no introduction. The thing to look for in Talisker, as with all smoky whiskies, is sweetness that gives the requisite balance to the drying effect of smoke. Underneath Talisker’s smoke, which ain't as all-pervading as Lagavulin, is a sweet pear-like quality. When young there are notes of the land: heather, moor, sweet seaweed, and a finish that has a distinctive cracked black pepper hit. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Dave Broom (Summer 2012)
… Nose: A razor-sharp spiciness lances through Demerara sweetness and rich peat. Absolutely magnificent. Palate: The enormous build up of spice adds to the multi-layered peat. The sweetness is almost like freshly crushed grist. Wave upon wave, layer upon layer of complexity. Finish: Massively warming and still spicy. The peat lingers while the spice bristles. Comment: A dram to be savoured and celebrated. Rating: 95 - www.whiskymag.com.
