One sniff and you are standing on the mineral-rich soils of Heathcote, surrounded by the warm, inviting scents of the local bush. This is an evocative wine, of the place, of the dirt, capturing both the natural generosity of Heathcote shiraz and its environment beautifully, artfully. Earth, bush mint, undergrowth, acacia, briar, cassis, black cherry, anise and red licorice join forces with well-mannered oak to seduce. Seduction complete. Drink by 2038.

"Possibly the most overlooked bottle in Wild Turkey’s lineup, barrels of Kentucky Spirit are consistently good, and sometimes fantastic..." - breakingbourbon.com

When it was released in 1994, Kentucky Spirit was at the forefront of Bourbon, reported to be only the second single barrel bourbon to hit the market after Blanton’s.The 101 proof release is drawn from a single barrel, which means no two will be exactly alike. The challenge is to find single barrels that capture the essence of Wild Turkey, while also maintaining a consistency that gives each taste of Kentucky Spirit a similar flavour from batch to batch. Every bottle is handsomely packaged with a label bearing the barrel number, date and warehouse number. In the context of the entire portfolio, this is the bottling that has the potential to bring out the best of Wild Turkey at what is arguably the distillery’s ideal proof. 50.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...  Kentucky Spirit probably won’t be many bourbon drinkers’ first experience with Wild Turkey, but it should hold a place on every more experienced bourbon drinker’s shelf. Given the right barrel and enough attention to its subtle nuances, Kentucky Spirit can offer a glimpse into some of the best the distillery has to offer. - breakingbourbon.com

...bottled at the proof that Wild Turkey was designed to be. A deeply-woody spiced nose featuring cinnamon and caramel advertises a power punch whiskey, but on the palate there's no punch. Instead, it's lush, round, and affable, with deep caramel and cinnamon co-mingling with peanut. The lush, sweet start is well-balanced by cinnamon spice, which ramps up and drives a long spicy finish. This is delicious whiskey. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Beautiful deep amber color. Lavish aromas of a cornucopia of dried fruits, vanilla maple fudge, Demerara sugar, and artisan chocolate toffee with a supple, lightly tannic full body and long, warming anise, toasted grain, and dusty mineral finish. A powerful oak driven, yet elegant bourbon. 94 points (Exceptional)
International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal. - tastings.com

Nose: The most herbal and spicy of the WT range: wild thyme, sage, fennel, coriander, nutmeg, cumin. Also smokier than the rest with notes of molasses, chestnut honey, crème brûlée. Palate: Complex and very soft. Raisin bread, butter, tupelo honey/maple. Finish. Huge and everlasting. Highly complex.Comment. As sexy as Isaac Hayes' Hot Buttered Soul. Wild Turkey Jimmy Russell's 70th Anniversary 101 Proof 8 Year Old Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50.5%

"Outstanding... Perfection at 8 years... If there were a single bourbon to best represent Wild Turkey’s signature flavor it would be this bottle." - rarebird101.com

Wild Turkey's latest collector-worthy bourbon celebrates Master Distiller, Jimmy Russell's 70th anniversary at the distillery. The whiskey is an 8 year old with an additional blend of 8 to 9 year old bourbons, hand-selected from a few of Jimmy’s favourite Rickhouses. The bolder, higher-proof expression is one he's always preferred. When many began favouring lighter spirits, Jimmy refused to dilute his bourbon or change the distilling process, embracing a style that he learned from his predecessor, Bill Hughes. That staunch approach helped propel the popularity of many of the distillery’s classics, including Jimmy’s favourite, Wild Turkey 101, proving that a bold Kentucky bourbon would always have a place behind the bar.

Wild Turkey was known as Anderson County Distilling Co. when Jimmy started work. It would soon change its name to J.T.S. Brown & Sons. From his earliest days spent sweeping the floors as an 18 year old rookie, Jimmy moved from job to job as seen fit by his mentor, the pre-prohibition distiller Bill Hughes. Through changes in ownership and shifts in the market, Jimmy rose through the ranks to finally become Master Distiller in 1967. Four years later a company from New York named Austin, Nichols & Co. (a subsidiary of Liggett Myers Tobacco. Co.) purchased the J.T.S. Brown & Sons Distillery to produce their flagship Wild Turkey Bourbon exclusively. The new management kept Jimmy in charge and the rest, as they say, is history. Seventy years working at the same business is an extraordinary accomplishment in anyone's book. It would take a dedicated biography to cover it. "In my eyes, I've never worked a day in my life. The day I do, I'll retire," jokes Jimmy. "Until then, I'm going to continue making the bourbon I love."

Other reviews... This year, master distiller Jimmy Russell celebrated his 70th year at Wild Turkey, a remarkable milestone by any stretch of the imagination (and even more so considering that he still shows up to work most days of the week). In honor of this watershed year, Jimmy’s son Eddie and grandson Bruce created a celebratory bourbon. The nose is chock-full of fresh cherries, cappuccino, vanilla cream, butterscotch, and leather. Baking spice bubbles over on the palate, backed up by toasted coconut and salted caramel, and a lick of bright citrus. Vanilla buttercream, Mounds bar, and black currant end this celebration on a high note. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Outstanding. Jimmy Russell’s 70th Anniversary Release is perfection at eight years. It’s everything it should be and nothing it shouldn’t. If there were a single bourbon to best represent Wild Turkey’s signature flavor it would be this bottle.  - rarebird101.com

Notes from the producers... Best served neat or over ice, the bourbon offers rich aromas of oak, honey, cinnamon, and tobacco and a palate marked by sweet cream, butterscotch and black tea notes that transition to bitter chocolate, dark cherry and burnt sugar.

Wonderfully concentrated and tense with zingy mineral laced acidity.

Wilson’s Polish Hill River Riesling is sourced from their oldest vineyards planted over 40 years ago. Its miniscule yields typically produce a wine rich in citrus fruits within a steely structure, tight with lots of minerality. Beneath the iron stained clay lies a bed of decomposing slate and scattered quartz. It’s also not unusual to find remnant pottery and agricultural implements from the Polish Settlers who once lived and farmed the area now planted to this small vineyard.
Brilliant water like colour with a faint greenish tinge around the edges. Lime and citrus aromas leap out of the glass trailed by some green apple, hints of orange rind, wet steel and chalky mineral notes. Delivered with fabulous intensity and tension are racy lemon, lime and green apple flavours. Zingy mineral laced acidity with delicate orange rind and wet steel elements also shining through. Dry and chalky it finishes very long and zesty.

Rich red to black fruits seamlessly integrated within a refined medium bodied structure.

The 2022 vintage marks 50 years of Wirra Wirra Church Block, the first vintage being produced back in 1972. A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Shiraz and 7% Merlot matured for 12 months in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak barrels.
Midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Blossoming from the glass are attractive scents of red to black currant, mulberry and red liquorice which are trailed by some vanillin cedar, earth and spice notes. Rich red to black currant, red liquorice and mulberry fruits meld into a vanillin cedar, earth, dried herb and spice back drop. Boasting excellent intensity and a seamlessly integrated fine grained tannin structure it finishes long and refined. One of the best Church Block’s for quite some time.

A vintage that marks an incoming winemaker and a culling of lesser quality fruit. Cabernet and shiraz, the Aussie archetype. Consummate, medium-bodied and savory, with better tannin management than what I recall of past vintages. Bay leaves, currants and iodine, with licorice tannins serving as gentle directives to good, supple length. An everyday claret for the sophisticate, with a strong maritime feel. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

    Cabernet Sauvignon (51%) Shiraz (42%) Merlot (7%).
This release of Wirra Wirra Church Block is on song and in form. It has plenty of flesh and fruit but it’s also firm and dry. It tastes of boysenberry, redcurrant, saltbush and dried herbs, with a gently ferrous-like element running throughout. It’s lovely to drink; solid but supple. Drink 2024-2029+

Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (1000ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Selection
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45.2%

Whiskey Hunt Australia's debut with Woodford Reserve comes courtesy of the distillery's owners, Brown Forman. Guided by Woodford's Brand Ambassador, Andy Tsai, in December 2023 the group were invited to choose from three Woodford select profiles. Unlike most WHA releases which have been single cask picks, the Woodford Personal Selection Program asks customers to preference a bourbon that matches their palate, typically based on three distinct distillery 'profiles'. Jack Daniels (also owned by Brown Forman) have a similar approach. No.2 was judged the winner, showcasing aromas of oak shavings, cherry-dark-chocolate and dried peach, complemented by medium bodied flavours of burnt caramel, subtle smoke, orange spice cake and drying oak. True to the Woodford house style, the whiskey was distilled from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley with 180 one-litre bottles imported to Australia. 45.2% Alc./Vol.

Ask a native where you could sample J.Wray & Nephew over-proof rum, and they will tell you knock on the door of any household. Such is the legendary status of this spirit that it accounts for 90% of rum sales in Jamaica. Other brands produced under the J.Wray & Nephew name are Captain Morgan, Coruba and the renowned Appleton Estate range. Use this product in classic rum punches with tropical juices. Alternate with flavoured rums and liqueurs for something new. Also great in the traditional Mai Tai and Daiquiri.

Other reviews... This is the flagship rum from Wray and the rum ... familiar instantly on the nose, with a mixture of citrus and petrol notes, very aromatic with florals and the raw alcoholic notes one expects from an overproof rum. The body is a bit tougher and astringent, slightly charcoal-dusted but otherwise intense with fruit, both citrus and tropical, with overtones of overripe banana, bubble gum, and a touch of eucalyptus on the finish. Surprisingly approachable despite the heavy alcohol level. - drinkhacker.com

...I’m not a huge white rum lover but this is as good as I have had.  It will give a massive kick to tiki style cocktails, where it is very often used.  W&N Overproof is very popular and highly regarded amongst bartenders and mixologists. Rightly so as well. The danger in this drink maybe that at 63% its very drinkable.  At the price it is also very good value.  W&N Overproof needs to be evaluated on what it is.  It is a very good white overproof mixer.  It’s availability and price makes it a no-brainer to have on hand. 4/5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

...I have gained a sort of sneaking appreciation for overproofs, including this one, because while it lacks the subtlety of a more refined 40% variation (subtlety? don’t make me laugh…the thing is like a charging brontosaurus on steroids at rutting time), it makes an intense, strong, powerfully tasting mix with whatever you decide to chase it. Try adding cola to a 40% low-ender and then to the White Overproof and try and tell me this one doesn’t have more character, more taste, more…well, cojones. It absolutely is not afraid to charge the gates and get the hell off the reservation.  When you drink J. Wray’s clear hooch, reader, there’s no ifs, ands or buts — you know Elvis has left the building; and didn’t just exit, he took off with rocket-powered, turbo-charged steel-toed boots. And a jet pack.... made by one company that remembers its roots and continues to distil a real rum. - thelonecaner.com

One of Coonawarra’s benchmark Cabernets from an outstanding vintage.

Renown as one of Coonawarra’s benchmark Cabernets, Wynns John Riddoch is made from parcels of the estates best fruit and is only produced in exceptional vintages.
Outstanding colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with a very deep dark red black hue. Soaring out of the glass are captivating aromas of blackcurrant, liquorice and mulberry which are complimented by vanillin cedar, tobacco, subtle earth, violet and traces of bay leaf. Rich and concentrated yet refined and structured, the medium to full bodied palate is redolent in fleshy red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry fruits. Lending further complexity are spicy vanillin cedar, earth, delicate tobacco and bay leaf accents. Fine grained, sturdily built tannin framework yet quite polished in it’s feel. Marrying finesse with power it finishes very long and eloquent with a deep core of fruit.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.
    Alc. 13.5%

16 months French oak hogsheads and barriques (31% new, the balance one to six years old) and 22 months in bottle prior to release. A cacophony of blackberries, Bing cherries and elderberries. Blackcurrant leaf, acaí and prune skin. Black coffee, vanilla pod, ash and charcoal. Acidity wisps about the palate like magic, a mesh of thread-like tannins pull and draw the focus. A hint of dark chocolate bitters; the wine finishes perky with echoing tunes of granite. It's just so centered and chic. Pure cabernet poise. Drink by 2038.

Shanteh Wale – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The 2021 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is a brilliant wine. It is achingly intense yet is defined by its levity, which is not a common attribute in Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine expounds the virtues of the red gravel in which the fruit was grown, via its iodine and crushed shells, cassis and blood, sweet marrow and tobacco. It tastes so clearly of the place, which is a wonderful thing. The back palate swells with flavor, framed by the earth and the attuned oak. This is a tribute to the earth, an ode to it. Plentiful tannins bob along on the current of fruit. This will cellar interminably. It's up there in both quality and feel with the 2010, or so I think. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2051.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

One of the best vintages in Coonawarra for many years. Little wonder this release of the John Riddoch is one of the best since the initial release from the 1982 vintage. Aromas of violets and red berry with a slightly cherry glaze character adding further intrigue. The palate is medium weight and refined but with tremendous power and persistence. A combination of hogsheads and barriques has been used to deliver the perfect level of oak. One of the best of these I can recall. Drink 2024-2054.

This 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Wynns John Riddoch is stylish and built for the long haul. It takes a couple of days to show its true colors. It radiates with blackcurrant, gravel and dried mint aromas, with a dusting of earth all wrapped up in a gentle blanket of French oak. Composed and super refined, the wine is underpinned by a line of seductive yet firm tannins with killer length and balance to finish. It is already very approachable but with serious staying power. A classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz first produced in 1962, Yalumba’s Signature pays homage each vintage to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the culture and traditions of Yalumba. The 2022 vintage’s signatory is Yalumba’s Executive Director of Sales for Australia & New Zealand, Paul Midolo. This year’s release marks the 51st vintage of Yalumba The Signature.
From vines with an average age of 49 years the 2021 Signature is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz with maturation taking place in a combination of French barriques and Hungarian hogsheads (21% of which was new oak) for a period of 18 months.

Deep and powerful yet finessed, this is Yalumba Signature at it’s finest.

Inky black heart with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Unfurling from the glass in what is a wonderful show of both refinement and intensity is a mix of red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry scents trailed by some vanillin cedar, tobacco, earth and faint bay leaf notes. Rich red plum, red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry fruits flow eloquently across the medium to full bodied palate. Piquing further interest and complexity are spicy vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco, earthy dark chocolate and bay leaf accents. Deep and powerful yet finessed it has a sturdy fine grained tannin structure that bodes well for longer term cellaring. Finishes very long, sophisticated and elegant.

Yalumba's famous Signature cabernet sauvignon and shiraz blend has a strong pedigree when it comes to cellaring and the 2022 release will certainly carry on long into the future. The fruit density and purity here are impressive. Blackberry, doris plum and black cherry tones, their flow elegant and graceful across the palate with hints of spice, cedar, tobacco, pencil shavings, roasting meats, dried herbs and olive tapenade. Fine-grained tannins are in abundance and there is an extended finish that rolls on and on. It's a super release. Drink by 2054.

The 2022 The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz is so pretty—floral, red fruited and fine. This is a beautiful iteration of this wine. Ironically, there's a coastal freshness about it—kelp, brine, crushed shells—given it is nowhere near the coast. It's capacious and mineral and so fresh. The tannins are fine and neat, and the wine has incredible focus and line through the long finish. It's very impressive, potentially one of my favorite releases of this wine to date. It has wholly Barossa fruit this vintage. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025-2052.

This is the younger vine bottling, coming mainly off vines planted in '08. Up to three weeks on skins; maturation in steel and old puncheons and foudre. This is a nice foil to the Old Vine bottling, showing what relatively youthful vines can do on this great site. There’s an open red-berried and cherry fruitfulness, with red florals supported by savoury spice and a foundation of purposeful natural tannin. This doesn’t have the mineral depth of the Old Vine, but the fruit vibrancy and exuberance yield their own rewards. Drink by 2030.

    Rich, concentrated and beautifully shaped.

Winemaker Adrian Rodda spent more than 10 years at Oakridge wines before moving to Beechworth to set up his own operation. Formally labelled as Baxendale, the 2024 release has been renamed Whitlands and is sourced from a site planted in 1995. Fermented and matured in 500 litre French oak puncheons (35% first use) for a period of 12 months on lees, it was then transferred to tank for a further 3 months on lees prior to bottling.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with green highlighted edges and a watery hue. White peach, nectarine and dried honey scents drift though the nostrils with plenty of intensity. Lending further complexity are notes of biscuity oak, cashew, nougat and gun flint. Rich, concentrated and beautifully shaped, mouth filling white peach, pear and ripe nectarine fruits are layered across the palate with a fresh, creamy feel. Biscuity nougat, dried honey, cashew and gentle gun flint elements extend across the back half. Perfectly pitched acidity lending energy to the long, powerful and textured finish.

"...tough to put down. It’s a stellar base for elevated Scotch cocktails, too." - drinkhacker.com

Nominated as one of the twenty defining whiskies of the past twenty years by Malt Advocate back in 2013, this new incarnation of Arran 10 opens slightly woody and acidic on the nose developing attractive honeyed, chocolatey notes. On the palate, American oak underscores the malt; juicy orchard fruits and vanilla shine through in a fresh, spicy delivery. The finish offers stewed pears and hints of cinnamon. Uncomplicated but very tasty. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... We last reviewed this whisky in 2012. Today the whisky is sweeter than I recall, the honey and nougat characteristics more immediate and vibrant on both nose and palate. Fresh, heathery granary notes give the palate a sense of the earth, with rolling notes of sweet breakfast cereal, a spritz of grapefruit peel, and just the lightest hint of rosemary. Definitely nutty on the finish, though my mention of almond notes 10 years prior is less distinct today, perhaps owing to the healthy slug of sweet honey that gives the whisky its exuberance. A light touch of green herbs returns on the finish — again, evoking rosemary. Arran 10 may not be overwhelming in its complexity — but it is, to be sure, tough to put down. It’s a stellar base for elevated Scotch cocktails, too. - drinkhacker.com

...Honey and fresh pear mingle on nose and palate of this single-malt Scotch from the Isle of Arran. Adding water cools the singe of alcohol heat and brings out a hint of smoke. Finishes light; sip or mix. 90 points - wineenthusiast.com

[Previous packaging] Launched in 2006 as the first mainstream Arran bottling with an age statement, it is sweet and malty on the nose, with fresh-planed wood and toffee apples. The palate is fruity, with ripe banana, honey, vanilla, coconut, and wood spices. Spicy orchard fruits and malt in the relatively long finish. Well-balanced and eminently drinkable at this age. The quality has improved since earlier bottlings.

Sparkling Shiraz is a unique Australian wine that’s synonymous with the Great Western region having been in production since the early 1900’s. The base wine for this cuvee is left on yeast lees in bottle for 36 months or more and disgorged in the traditional method. The dosage liqueur contains a small quantity of very old Best’s Liqueur Muscat.

Sparkling Shiraz at Christmas is an Australian tradition and few producers do it as well as Best’s.

Pours with exuberantly frothy mousse that fills the glass then slowly fades in to a deep dark red black coloured base that’s threaded by a steady stream of fine bubbles. Heady aromas of dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate waft through the nostrils complimented by some vanillin spice, blackberry and subtle earthy mocha notes. Rich, engulfing dark plum, blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate flavours carry an opulent, creamy feel across the palate with earthy mocha and vanilla spice accents sitting in the background. Concludes long and decadent yet with an airy freshness.

This entry level Bordeaux offers a window into the quality of the outstanding 2022 vintage, one which Vinous critic Neal Martin states “two thousand twenty-two witnessed the birth of legendary wines and unbeatable value-for-money….” . And Jeb Dunnuck also lends his lofty praise of the vintage “This is an extraordinary vintage that will go down in record books as one of the all-time greats….. It’s possible to discover sensational wines from small châteaux and lesser-known appellations at surprisingly affordable price points.”
Whilst certainly not one of the vintage’s legends, this blend of 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, without a doubt delivers fantastic value featuring rich blackcurrant fruit that shows ample flesh.

A rich, generously endowed Bordeaux from the outstanding 2022 vintage that delivers great value.

Deep black dark red core with a dark red black tinged hue. Ripe red to black currant and liquorice aromas fill the nostrils followed by some earth, cigar box and spicy dried herb notes. The mid weighted palate is awash with rich, concentrated blackcurrant fruits with notions of liquorice, earth, toasty vanillin cedar, subtle black olive and spicy dried herb characters unfolding across the back half. Fleshy yet grainy mouth feel with a sturdy tannin structure leading into a long amply fruited finish that has a robust feel.

A delicious Burgundian Rose that has wonderful flavour intensity, a silky texture and mildly tangy acidity.

Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

This rosé is made from 100% Pinot Noir, sourced from organically farmed vineyards in and around the Marsannay appellation. Blush pink tinged colour. A mix of strawberry, pomegranate and cherry aromas stream out of the glass with hints of musk and wet stone also evident. Showing excellent intensity of flavour the palate features delicious raspberry, strawberry, cherry and pomegranate fruits which carry a silken feel. Watermelon, delicate musk and wet stone elements sit in the background. Mildly tangy acidity with the long moreish finish gorgeously polished in it’s texture.

"...rather rich but unexpectedly refreshing for Edradour. One of the good ones, I like it. " - whiskyfun.com

Originally released in 1997 as a US exclusive, this special bottling was initially matured in Bourbon casks for approximately five years followed by an extended period in oloroso sherry casks. Described by the boys at Edradour as "an old fashioned whisky for those looking for how it used to be made", the aim here has been to retain maximum flavour for your buck. The story goes MacLean was visiting Edradour and helped select the first cask for bottling. Clearly, Maclean has talents besides songwriting as this has been an ongoing success. Named after his famous tune, "Caledonia", Maclean reflects on his choice, adding, “I wrote Caledonia, in 1977 on a beach in Brittany, France, when I was genuinely homesick for Scotland. My life has always been based in Perthshire. For me, the location of Edradour, with its neat cluster of whitewashed buildings, traditional equipment and employment of ancient methods of making single malt whisky, combined with its state of the art bottling facility, typify Caledonia.”

The first thing that attracts you to this whisky is its natural deep topaz colour which makes it look older than its age statement. Then there's the intense medley of dried fruits on the nose that's like Christmas cake with a touch of ginger bread in later passes. The theme continues in a rich and textural mouthfeel with juicy raisin, spiced stewed fruits and warming cinnamon heat. The finish is vivacious more than sweet, developing spicy oak and late fruitiness of a dark chocolate kind. These bottlings are reported to vary from batch to batch. All said, this one comes across as a well poised, buxom beauty from a squeaky clean sherry cask. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill-filtered.

Other reviews... about as thick as it gets. Nose this and fruit is soon dripping off your proboscis...the lingering oils confirm a wide cut has been made those dozen years back...Gosh, hold onto your hats, this is some ride! 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016

[circa 2009 bottling]...Colour: full gold. Nose: sometimes some Edradours are difficult because of their, say unusual profile, but sometimes that profile can be an asset, especially when it’s not too obvious. Yes, talking about that kind of soapiness that, in fact, isn’t really soapy, rather ‘bizarrely leathery’ if you see what I mean. Anyway, it’s well here in this Caledonia but blended with several very nice aromas such as chestnut honey, cured ham (Jabugo, really) and just touches of camphor that go very well with the whole. Also some flinty notes and just wee whiffs of gunpowder. Mouth: I think this one’s got all the good sides of Edradour. Marrons glacés, orange cake, marmalade, some leather and chlorophyll (gums), hints of kummel and cardamom, grapefruits… Nice profile, probably cleaner than usual. Liquorice allsorts. Pleasant, creamy mouth feel. Finish: rather long, coating, a tad jammier now. Chocolate-dipped orange zests. Comments: rather rich but unexpectedly refreshing for Edradour. One of the good ones, I like it.  83 points - whiskyfun.com

[circa 2022 bottling]...I added a touch of water to this dram and it seemed to mellow out some of the spice, turning it more silky smooth. Butterscotch and pecans develop more with that added dash of water, but I’d be careful in adding too much here. Overall this is a delicious and chewy whisky. It packs so much flavour, so much that one or two drams would be enough. A great dessert whisky. It’s nicely complex and delivers on value. I’d happily pay the retail for this bottle and restock when this inevitably gets polished off. A touch on the dirty side palate wise, which is right up my street. Not as dirty as say a Mortlach, but a welcoming surprise as it opens up. - dramface.com

Full sherry impact, but contained—not excessive or sappy. Rich, with nutty toffee, pot still rum, a variety of raisins (regular and golden), date, honeyed fruit, polished leather, and a hint of tobacco. Good resinous grip on the finish to balance the sweetness. The flavors are nicely integrated. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com (Summer 2010) Reviewed by: John Hansell

Green River Single Barrel Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Selection
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 63.2%

A genuine number one, being the first ever Green River single barrel chosen exclusively for the Australian market. At the time of selection, the whiskey was five years old / 62.6% ABV. It subsequently climbed to 63.2%, likely passing through another full Kentucky summer prior to bottling. The barrel matured on the fourth floor of one of Kentucky’s oldest rickhouses, a half clay tiled, half brick clad structure that traps heat and maintains steady temperatures for extended periods. The environment promotes deep extraction, bold spice and a long, structured finish - which also explains why this tastes well beyond its age. The high rye style is sometimes described as 'herbaceous' (think mint in particular) and that's just what you get here. Peppermint lozenges and cocoa-dusted rye smother the vanillas, bringing a fresh, dryish nose-feel. After a minute or two, the aroma drops intensity, but the palate makes amends in a simply enormous Bourbon with the body and texture of a single malt: On entry, thick, sweet, oily rye takes charge and explodes at mid palate. Peppermint drives the finish home, leaving tongue-tingling spices, lingering sugars and buttery rye flavours coating the mouth. And what about the balance at cask strength! Since selection, Green River has been awarded World’s Best Bourbon and Best in Class at the 2025 New York World Spirits Competition. Clearly a brand to look out for. One barrel only, bottled naturale equates to 195 bottles for Australia. The price/quality ratio is very good. This is one you won't want to miss. 63.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 25ml sample.

Notes from the importers... Aroma: Peppermint, orange peel, star anise, soft Earl Grey tea Palate: Demerara sugar, cloves, drying oak Finish: Rye spice and dark chocolate layered over spearmint leaf lollies This is a big, expressive bourbon, with the high rye content driving intensity from first sip to final linger. Herbal, spicy, and unapologetically powerful, this is Green River turned up to 11.

More about Green River... Crafted on the historic Green River campus in Owensboro, Kentucky, Green River is an industrial distillery with roots back to 1885 when J.W. McCulloch first marketed his product as “The Whiskey Without A Headache”. The slogan later changed to “The Whiskey Without Regrets,” in order to avoid liability for misleading medical claims. Over that time, numerous brands have been made there including Ezra Brooks, Mellow Corn, Medley Brothers, Old Medley, Five Brothers and Kentucky Beau. The distillery has also had several different owners and names. Most recently, Terressentia Corporation purchased the plant in 2014 and began renovations. In 2016, acting Master Distiller, Ron Call passed the torch to his son, Jacob, and in 2020, the distillery reclaimed its original title and Distilled Spirits Plant number (DSP-KY 10). Thus, the Green River brand which had largely faded from memory was reborn exactly where it originated. The product launch made an impact in the value Bourbon segment - so much so that Bardstown Bourbon bought the company the following Summer.

One of the highlights of the DE range. Try it with aged cheeses.

The idea behind Diageo's Distillers Editions (which started in 1997), is essentially, “...an annual release of Classic Single Malts, each double-matured in a different type of cask wood to complement the characteristics of the whisky." In short, start with a core distillery expression, then finish it for an unstated length of time in a novel cask. When it came to Lagavulin, there were doubters who thought nothing could be a match for its pungent character. Those sceptics were probably unfamiliar with Pedro-Ximenez (sweet) sherry. As the years went by, many came to consider this bottling as the benchmark for the other Distiller Editions. As of 2022, the label changed. Previously you could find details like 'lgv 4/510'. Now there’s no indication of the batch. Even the vintage and confirmed age have disappeared. That means this may (or may not be) ‘extra matured’ Lagavulin 16 Year Old, instead, it would be best described as a NAS (no age statement) whisky.

When we last visited this distinctive dram, it possessed all the classic Lagavulin notes matched by the sweet accents of sun-dried grapes derived from PX cask wood. Iodine, sea spray, kelp, lanolin and white pepper over sweeter scents of vanilla, cocoa and shortbread. Lighter bodied than the standard issue, but also more silky; mildly salty with peat infused raisin bread, honey, pepper and hints of liquorice bullets in the aftertaste. Superb balance. Ends kippery, dry, with the whisky almost taking back seat to the sherry. Like a mouthful of smoked-fruit'n'nut chocolate. Quite feminine by this distillery's standards, but one of the highlights of the DE range. Try it with aged cheeses. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: I love how the sherry seems to amplify the smoke. Not that it’s the most smoky whisky around, but it gives it a more sooty character. Lacquered meat on the barbecue, hints of toffee and a herbal syrup. Dark bramble. Later it becomes more tart and it seems to thin out. A more vinous aroma comes out, as well as some iodine and olive brine. Mouth: fairly accessible and light, still a little vinous, but it does show a nice smokiness too. Lapsang tea, earthy liquorice, hints of dark chocolate. Then some grassy notes appear (slightly less impressive) with leather and roasted coffee. Also dried seaweed and a lightly acrid, medicinal and peppery note. Finish: medium long, with more of the medicinal ashes and sweet malty notes. Hints of baked apples and autumn leaves, with a fine bitter edge. Quite a nice dram, I still consider myself a fan of this Distillers Edition. - whiskynotes.be

...Double matured in PX seasoned casks and now coming without any age or vintage statements, while last year's still had one, 2006. Gulp! At least it lasted from the glorious vintage 1979 to vintage 2006. Colour: golden apricot. Nose: nice, fresh, not quite PX-y, rather on lapsang souchong and pu-her, old hunting jacket, Barbour grease, lanolin, with a little game, Maggi, lovage, soy sauce… Some camphor and cough syrup too. Sadly I haven't got any older vintages at hand, but I have the impression that this is fresher and less on coffee and chocolate than its ancestors. Mouth: the sherry feels a little more on the palate but it's still a refreshing and lively Lagavulin, pretty smoky, with a growing toffeeness and a little pipe tobacco. Would tend to get then heavier and a little leathery, but with good marmalade and jams (plums). Finish: medium, a little medicinal, with a feeling of sweet cough syrup. No meatiness that I can detect on the palate. The aftertaste is a notch too jammy and sweet for me, this sweetness being new. Comments: nutshell, they cancelled the vintage and age statements and seemingly raised the price to +/-125€, while bottling a fairly better and possibly younger juice. Loved the lovage in it. Crikey, I just don't know whether we should start to complain or not. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

...I cant believe I’m saying this, but this may have surpassed the 16 for the title of my favorite Laga. I was beginning to think I would never say that. But the PX sherry cask finish really gives it a balance unlike anything. That same mistifying and baffling cool, minty (eucalyptus?) finish is there. It still magically goes from deep dense smoke to a vaporous cooling note somehow. But now its almost as though its wrapped in yet another layer. It’s as dynamic and interesting as the 16, but it’s almost like it’s refined older cousin. Savoring this bottle for sure. My favorite Laga to date, and just a hair shy of a perfect rating for me. - distiller.com

Winemaker Waldo Smit sourced fruit for this Chardonnay from 20-year-old vines grown in the Beechworth township of Baarmutha by the Iwanuch family. Hand-picked fruit was gently pressed to 500 litre French oak barrels (15% being new) for fermentation, followed by 10 months maturation. Regular lees stirring took place and full malolactic conversion was encouraged to build textural qualities.

A sub $30 Beechworth Chardonnay that delivers the goods.

A brilliant pale straw core is surrounded by green tinted edges with a watery hue. Drifting through the olfactory senses are white peach, nectarine and subtle dried honey scents complimented by some biscuity nougat, hints of ginger and delicate flint notes. Rich and full in the mouth but far from heavy handed, the expansive palate is layered with fleshy white peach and nectarine fruits. Notions of dried honey, biscuit, nougat, spicy ginger and flint lend further interest. Offering Beechworth’s trademark depth and drive it has a shapely textural feel that’s nicely counterpointed by fresh acidity. Finishes long and gently spiced.

This is a characterful chardonnay with good flavour, enough texture and complexity, and plenty of both punch and interest through the finish. This is excellent buying. Grapefruit, stonefruit, a flash of smoky/meaty oak and a lemon fresh note through the finish, combined with rust/mineral notes. Ripper buying/drinking here. 92-93, opted for the higher. We asked for a Sherry bomb and Signatory delivered. First-fill oloroso matured with outstanding colour, close to cask strength and non chill filtered. But where's it from? "Speyside GL" could be anything given the amount of Glensomethings in Speyside. GlenFiddich, less likely GlenFarclas. We're told permissions can be cask/batch specific, and independents sometimes decide not to use a distillery name because they would have to pay more to use it. Given the low prices for these bottlings, Signatory clearly like to keep costs down. Let's not overthink it. That said, the "GL" is some indication that whatever follows "Glen" begins with an "L." Whiskyfun have tasted similar releases and suggest they're Glenlivet. We say it's definitely Glenlivet. And apparently it's absolutely delicious. Dates, leather, sherry, tobacco, cinnamon, lots of wood & even more sherry at a price that wouldn’t have looked out of place a decade ago. "A very fine Benrinnes and one of the finer examples of the SV 100 proof range." -whiskybase.com

Benrinnes is on most malt lovers 'to do' lists, mainly because it's a contrast to lighter Speysiders offering a meaty, rich and spicy profile that's suited to sherry influence. While the quality and character can vary significantly between independent bottlings and official releases, the consensus is two thumbs up here, with Signatory delivering one for sherry lovers and bargain hunters alike. Tasters note date syrup, cherry jam, espresso beans and gingerbread, no doubt largely derived from time in first-fill and refill Oloroso butts. Sounds like a proper Winter dram, if you can hold out that long! At direct import pricing, you can afford to buy one for now and stash the second for a rainy day. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Zero chill filtration.

Other reviews... Malt, charred oak, tannins, spices, dried fruits, ginger, chocolate, caramel. Modern refill sherry cask style with a medium finish, the abv is integrated alright. More malt forward than the #33 batch. / More spirit driven than the previous edition and equally as good in my opinion. Another very good one from this series. - whiskybase.com
