Whisky is big business in Japan with Scotch whisky being especially popular, yet with their own history of brewing and sake production, it's only logical that the Japanese are now making whisky too. What began as a conscious imitation of Scotch, now has a style all of its own, and since commercial production began in the early 20th century, the quality has been steadily improving.

Today, most of the malt whisky produced in Japan is for blending but Japanese distillers generally don't trade casks in the manner that Scottish distillers do. Consequently, it's up to each distillery to produce a diversity of styles that will form the base components of 'house blends' that offer unique and complex flavour profiles. Some Japanese blends will even include a percentage of Scotch whisky, rather than whisky from rival local distillers. This jealous reluctance to exchange whiskies is considered one of the major obstacles holding the industry back from the prominence it deserves: In a number of blind tastings recently organised by Whisky Magazine, which have included Japanese single malts in the lineup along with malts from distilleries considered to be among the best in Scotland, on more than one occasion, the results have had Japanese single malts scoring higher than their Scotch counterparts.

After a long absence from the Australian market, we've finally managed to secure some world class Japanese whiskies from the Nikka distillery, Japan’s second largest whisky producer after Suntory. Now owned by the brewer Asahi, the company was originally set up by Masataka Taketsuru, who built Yoichi distillery in 1934, having previously spent two years studying the art of distilling in Scotland. (He also developed the now famous 'Yamazaki' distillery in Kyoto for Suntory which he managed for ten years).

Nikka's range of blended, pure malt and single malt whiskies will be exciting new discoveries for any Whisky enthusiast.

Tasting note: Bright gold. Lovely fruity / malty nose offers scents of nashi pear, water biscuit and light vanilla. Medium bodied with an appealing, easy to enjoy profile; citrus peel-like freshness combines with richer, biscuity malt and subtle toasted marshmallow. An undercurrent of soft peat wafts about towards the finish which is also tangy, peppery and long. Beautifully harmonised. Delicious whisky. 43% Alc./Vol.

Nikka Miyagikyo 15 Year Old Single Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)
    Sendai, JAPAN
    $599. 00
    Bottle
    $7188.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
Miyagikyo (sometimes referred to as 'Sendai') is Nikka's second distillery and was built in 1969 after Taketsuru came upon the site, completely enclosed by mountains and sandwiched between the Shin and Hirose rivers. The areas fresh water and crisp air produce soft and mild malt, while the humidity is considered perfect for spirit maturation. At present eight stills are in operation.

Tasting note: Deep gold / polished copper. Issues soft scents of stewed fruits, vanilla and hazelnut following through to an impeccably pure, light to medium bodied, juicy fruit and malt profile that's a simple pleasure. Perfect balance. Ends vibrant yet genteel. Very debonair. 45% Alc./Vol.

Very good reviews on the blogosphere for this new no age statement blend of coffey malt and grain whiskies sourced from Miyagikyo distilliery (aka Sendai). This particular expression is typically only available in the city of Sendai, where the distillery is located. The name 'Date' was used as a tribute to 'Date Masamune', the famous 15th century feudal warlord.

Other reviews... This is a discontinued blend that mentions the Sendai a.k.a. Miyagikyo Distillery, but let’s remember they make both malt and grain at Miyagikyo. So, perhaps some single blend? It’s hard to be 100% sure, but some good sources are even mentioning the fact that this would be a blend of Coffey malt and grain rom Miyagikyo. Colour: light gold. Nose: there’s clearly more happening in this one, as if the malt content was higher. Like these stewed plums, these notes of patchouli and eucalyptus (or Indian beedies), and the rather wonderful whiffs of cider apple skins, or there, artisan cider. Also a little grass smoke (we’re talking proper grass, or garden bonfire). Mouth: indeed, nothing to do with the little ‘Days’, this is much bigger, more herbal, more resinous, with more oriental notes, incense, sandalwood, green mochi, green tea… It’s really fine, and it wouldn’t lose steam this time. Notes of green oranges as well. Finish: rather long, more lemony, and always with oriental notes, rare teas, wood extracts, sucking cedar wood, more grassy smokiness… Comments: really an excellent blend, with a clear Japanness (unless I’m confused). I could quaff this while listening to some good Japanese jazz. There’s a lot! 43% Alc./Vol.

Another rare Nikka surfaces... this time from Miyagikyo, Nikka's second distillery, built in 1969 after Taketsuru came upon the site, completely enclosed by mountains and sandwiched between the Shin and Hirose rivers. The local crisp air and humidity is considered perfect for spirit maturation. At present eight stills are in operation. The style tends to be light, elegant yet spicy. Great review from Serge Valentin below for this now very rare (and unusual) single cask, cask strength release. One only to sell.

Other reviews... Colour: gold. Nose: as superb as the 1989 at first sniffs, maybe even more so. More straight peat, very ‘wet’ (garden bonfire with wet grass) and a lot of lemon balm, lime, crystallised oranges and hints of passion fruits. Great nose at 63%! With water: oh, this is very strange. Gets kind of ‘pleasantly rotten’, on notes of well-hung game, gunpowder, even mud… Strange but nice, even if a tad ‘perverse’. So much for a friend who was telling me that Japanese whiskies were ‘lab whiskies.’ Mouth (neat): ultra-strong but funnily enough, this is ‘swallowable’ as it does not really burn. Very rich but straighter than the 1989 again, with a big smokiness and a very special association of citrus fruits and very aromatic fruits such as ripe raspberries and even rose-flavoured sweets (or high-quality Turkish delights). With water: gets drier but very pleasantly so this time. More bitter chocolate, un-sugared herbal tea and plain tea, notes of cough syrup, peppermint… And always a lot of peat. Finish: long, maybe a little simpler than expected because of the rather heavy woodiness but very clean and very peaty (and quite salty). Comments: a big, concentrated dram that stands water perfectly well this time. At 63%, it’ll make for two bottles for the price of one - almost. 89 points - whiskyfun.com

Yoichi typically produces rich, peaty and masculine malts. The whiskies get their distinct aroma and body from direct heating distillation, in which the pot stills are heated with finely powdered natural coal - a traditional method that's hardly used today, even in Scotland.

'...the kind of whisky that propels a distillery into super league status.
    A Classic!'- Jim Murray.

Tasting note: Brilliant gold. Powerful opening scents of caramel fudge followed by light vanilla malt and a whisper of smoked fish. Second pass adds hints of linseed oil, cocoa and dates. Very nuanced. Great complexity. Just beautiful in its poised and textured delivery - juicy and seamless. Delicious, creamy, vanilla laced malt takes center stage countered by a delightful vibrancy on the finish as lively spices fan out at length; hints of biscuit, quince paste and sweet smoke in the fade. Complete and perfectly rounded. Impossible not to like. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...  Nikka’s first distillery is located in the eponymous town on the western coast of Hokkaido. Here, power is the key. Deep and rich with a distinct oiliness — somewhere between linseed and cod liver — there’s also plenty of smoke in the mix as well, and a little hint of black olives in brine with ripe apples lurking behind. I hate making comparisons between Japanese and Scotch single malt but if I was forced to, Yoichi reminds me most of Springbank (edging into Longrow). Water dampens the personality too much for me; best have it full-on and uncompromising. Rather than the palate showing a slow procession of flavors along the tongue, this is a layered whisky; coal-like, oily, and richly fruited with a distinct saltiness on the sides, ably demonstrating that Japan has almost as much variety on offer as scotch. 95 points - Dave Broom, www.maltadvocate.com

    DISCONTINUED.

Following Suntory's lead, Nikka has discontinued its lines of extra-aged whiskies, with some reports that the shortage could last up to a decade before the taps are turned back on.

Nikka's range of blended, pure malt and single malt whiskies will be exciting new discoveries for any Whisky enthusiast. This 21 Year Old bottling is dedicated to the Father of the Japanese Whisky Industry, Masataka Taketsuru.

The tale of Masataka Taketsuru's life is of the same fabric legends are made of. Sent in 1918 as a young apprentice to Scotland by his Japanese employers to crack the secrets of whisky, he not only came back with that knowledge but also with Rita Taketsuru (nee Cowan), who went on playing a decisive role in the development of the Japanese Whisky industry. Thanks to her connection to Japanese high society, Masataka was able to finance the company that is now known as Nikka Whisky. This blend of malts is from the two Nikka distilleries, Yoichi and Miyagikyo.

I taunted you with the first of the initial brace in 2010, the exemplary Yoichi 15 year old (a hefty 95 points). The second is the firm’s vatted malt, Taketsuru 12 year old. A mix of Yoichi and Miyagikyo distillates, it is the latter which is to the fore here: a honey-laden mix of cut flowers, persimmon, vanilla, and apple. More are on their way. 81 points

As the name suggests, a high proportion of sherry casks are used in this expression. Expect intense aromas and flavours of raisins, plums.

Other reviews... Well, sherry shouldn’t be sweet, but I’m digressing… Liked the older 12 quite a lot back in ’09 (WF 84). Colour: deep gold. Nose: praline, rubber, and indeed, a little sulphur. Walnuts and used matches hold together in an old leather pouch, or something like that. Frankly, I didn’t expect this much sulphur in a Yoichi. With water: struck matches and gunpowder all over the place. Mouth (neat): ah, no, this works very well. Burnt orange cake, cooked honey sauce, candied angelica, cherry liqueur, a drop of yellow chartreuse… It’s quite different from your usual sherried malt, perhaps more candied? Nice feeling. No sulphur that I can detect on the palate. With water: very good. Burnt raisins on a burnt kougelhopf. Yes, a Proust’s madeleine. Finish: quite long, beautifully raisiny, with orange zests and just a touch of clove. Comments: yeah go score this. If you hate sulphur in the nose, say 70. If you don’t care, that’ll rather be, say 86 or even 87. Good, say 80 altogether. Oh those scores!

Yoichi was set up by founder, Masataka Taketsuru on Japan's northern most island after he left Suntory in 1934. He chose Hokkaido because the climatic conditions reminded him of Scotland where he’d first studied whisky making. The house style is typically rich, peaty and masculine, acquiring a distinct aroma and body from direct heated distillation using a finely powdered coal - a traditional method that's hardly used today, even in Scotland. Usually only sold at the distillery, this one's named for the high proportion of peated whiskies used in its creation. Weighing in at 55% Alc./Vol., it should also be quite intense.

Other reviews... Liked the older 12 a lot. Colour: gold. Nose: bizarrely, it’s rather the shiest among them three. A rather round peat, say young Caol Ila ex-rejuvenated barrel or something. I know, a shortcut. Whiffs of iodine, cough medicine, almonds, oysters… With water: no, rather a soft Talisker. Mouth (neat): sweet peat! Lou Reed could have written a song about it. Oranges and grapefruits, as sweets and as fresh juices, plus brine and green pepper, as well as a large teapot of lapsang souchong. With water: same. It’s one of the easiest peaters I’ve tried this year (we’re in 2017, am I not right?) Finish: medium, easy, uncomplicated, perhaps a wee tad cardboardy? There is some salt(iness) but not much. Comments: perhaps does it mimic the Scottish peaters a little too much? But yeah, it’s good and flawless.

Nikka Tsuru (not to be mistaken for Nikka Takestsuru) is a blend that's off the radar for most. Information is scant on this bottling. "Peat" being mentioned on the back label likely means peated malt from Yoichi. "Grain" likely means Nikka Coffey Grain is included. Of course, there may be some Ben Nevis in the mix too. One report states that it is / or was only available via Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, meaning it's a distillery exclusive so quite hard to come by. Nikka's Yoichi distillery on Japan's northern most island released these annual editions which have been notoriously hard to find. Usually only sold at the distillery, this one's named for the high proportion of Bourbon casks used in its maturation, so expect aromas and flavours American oak and a hint of vanilla.

Other reviews... Only WF 78 back in 2009, but that was the earlier 12 yo. Right, and that was 2009. Colour: deep gold. Nose: varnish, cellulose, vanilla, nail polish, sawdust… Quick, water! Although it seems that there’s some quince, always a hit at WF Towers. With water: good fruit syrup, vanilla, and cake crumbles. Some kind of breakfasty recipe, perhaps (we don’t do bacon in France!) Mouth (neat): my, this is barley syrup! But I quite enjoy this feisty mix, with coconut sweets, custard, candyfloss, and of course a lot of vanilla. Marzipan and macaroons, plus pineapples. Some similarities with the regular NAS. With water: a little simple, but more than good. Vanilla and oranges this time, with a mentholy background. Finish: medium, rounded, rather on maple syrup. Comments: excellent albeit a little ‘elementary’. But I guess that was the whole point in the first place. Very little peat this time, if any.

North Star The English Whisky Co. 11 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt English Whisky (700ml)
    UNITED KINGDOM
    $225. 00
    Bottle
    $2700.00 Dozen
    ABV: 49.8%
Here's a real twist on single malt whisky: It's English and it's matured full-term in a Burgundy red wine cask! With an outturn of 300 bottles, North Star say to expect aromas and flavours of smokey Pinot Noir, flinty cherries and raspberries and Sassenach's Eau de Vie. Bottled non chill filtered at 49.8% Alc./Vol.

Established in 2006, the English Whisky Co. produce both unpeated and peated whiskies, in conjunction with a rolling program of cask trials that includes x-rum and sherry casks. Pinning down a ‘house style’ is difficult. The company is the most prolific producer of English malt whisky, though by Scotch standards, output is miniscule. Some bottlings are harder to find than others. Virtually all of them have received rave reviews from the likes of Jim Murray. Early bottlings we tasted back in 2011 were precocious.
1984 Number One Drinks Company Karuizawa Ex-Bourbon Cask 8173 30 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)
    JAPAN
    $9999. 00
    Bottle
    $119988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.5%

Note: Some wear to the gift box, this is typical of the material used.

Karuizawa's cult whiskies have received international acclaim. The problem is finding them. French retailer, La Maison du Whisky periodically sources well-aged expressions. In 2014, they managed to secure two casks from owners/distributors 'Number One Drinks Co.' - one sherry and one matured in an ex-bourbon cask for thirty years before being bottled in April 2014.
363 bottles were sold exclusively via the Paris-based retailer, so we're very fortunate to have just one on offer.

Other reviews... Colour: dark amber. Nose: a pretty magnificent woodiness here, that is to say not only polished oak, but also other species, such as eucalyptus wood and many precious woods, but I just couldn’t tell you which ones. Maybe rosewood? I imagine the interior of a 1950’s Rolls Royce when it was brand new (maybe!) Other than that, there’s a little smoke, there’s tobacco for sure and there’s a faint chalkiness. I also find dry sherry, or vin jaune, as well as their walnut notes. Also a little humus and mushrooms. Perfect. One strawberry or two after ten minutes. With water: the menthol comes out, old herbal liqueurs, verbena, chartreuse… This is almost a blend of essential oils. Having said that it gets much quieter after just one minute. Mouth (neat): huge and incredibly fruity! You would think that this massive woodiness would overwhelm the spirit and just make the whole extremely dry, while that’s exactly what’s not happening. We’re gravitating around sweeter citrus, that is to say kumquats, oranges and mandarins, covered with crushed cloves and ground pepper. Christmassy? You said it. With water: same profile, just even more vivid and ‘nervous’. Perfect oranges. Finish: long, never embarrassingly oak, always fresh albeit massive. The hidden child of a sumotori and a ballerina. Comments: I think I found this one ampler and more complex than other ex-bourbon Karuizawas. We’re close to the best sherried versions in my opinion.

Japanese whiskies have been delivering remarkable returns compared with other segments, and the most sought after of all are the whiskies from the now silent Karuizawa distillery. As one of the top performers on the UK auction scene in recent years, this bottle represents an opportunity to secure a piece of Japanese distilling history. Karuizawa ceased production in 2000 and completely closed in 2011.

Karuizawa is held in quite different esteem to the Nikka and Suntory giants. Despite being the country's smallest whisky producer, they had ambitions to be one of Japan's best, taking an approach reminscent of Macallan when they were setting the bar for Scotch malt excellence in the 1980s.

Fifty years ago the site of Karuizawa was actually a vineyard before its owner Daikoku-budoshu converted it into a whisky distillery in 1962. At 850 metres above sea level it is the most elevated in Japan. It stands in the countryside, in the shadow of a dormant volcano named Mt. Asama, to the north west of Tokyo.

Karuizawa's preference for only using sherry casks (though not exclusively) helped build its reputation, and there have been a number of single cask bottlings in this sherry-led style. This matches their flavoursome spirit, made using only Golden Promise barley (as Macallan once did), all shipped from Simpson’s of Berwick. Since the mid-nineties Karuizawa was unpeated. Other Reviews...Colour: amber. Nose: the very same family again but this seems to be rounder and smoother, with less gunpowder this time, less leather and less meat. Instead, we have more figs and dates, apricot jam, chocolate, kirsch… And yeah, more gunpowder coming through after a few seconds albeit not in such great amounts. With water: yes, it’s probably the Scotchest of them all. Dried fruits, figs, kumquats, jams, bergamots, orange cake, sandalwood, spearmint and just touches of parsley and old balsamic vinegar. Beautiful. Mouth (neat): exactly the same feeling as with the nose, this is a tad less powerful and much creamier and fruitier than the 1977s but don’t get me wrong, it’s still a powerful monster (a kaiju?) that needs water. With water: ah yes, this extra-fruitiness makes it a tad sexier than the 1977s and probably a little easier too. Marmalade, pepper, mango chutney and bags of cinnamon. Finish: extremely long, mostly on fresh green pepper, which comes as a surprise. But I must confess I love green pepper! Comments: fab. 92 Points Serge Valentin (whiskyfun.com)

Karuizawa is held in quite different esteem to the Nikka and Suntory giants. Despite being the country's smallest whisky producer, they had ambitions to be one of Japan's best, taking an approach reminiscent of Macallan when they were setting the bar for Scotch malt excellence in the 1980s.

Asama, to the north-west of Tokyo.

It's ironic that the vision and persistence of its proprietors was commercially unsustainable during its operation. The distillery ceased production in 2000 and completely closed in 2011.

Other Reviews...  Colour: gold. Nose: sure it’s extremely punchy at such high strength but quite unexpectedly, the high alcohol does not block it and lets some rather beautiful notes of figs, dates and ripe bananas go through. Quite some heather honey too, old Sauternes, apricot and mirabelle jams, pinewood smoke… Fantastic. With water: a little more oak, nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon but all that goes marvellously well with the ripe fruitiness. Even more dried figs, roasted macadamia nuts, mapple syrup and orange blossom water. Extremely elegant. Mouth (neat): ouch! This is extremely hot, of course but sort of drinkable provided you take only half drops. Once again, figs and dates do dominate the whole, as well as raisins and vanilla. The sherry is rather discreet. Quick, water: exceptional development on all dried fruits and all honeys. Balance is perfect. Enough said. Finish: very long, with a faint smokiness, loads of very soft spices and hundreds of dried fruits. Okay, dozens. Comments: extremely high quality, perfect balance and not the tiniest flaw. It’s got something of some of the best old Springbanks.  - 93 points  Serge Valentin (whiskyfun.com)

Nose: the alcohol really hits you, but it’s still very expressive. Big sherry (well, Japanese wine) influence. Wonderful tobacco notes, like a recently opened cigar box. Plums. Kirsch. Spicy chocolate (cinnamon) and orange marmalade. Some leather. A light hint of smoke. Very complex, very good. Mouth: wow, very powerful and hot. Water needed here (and I don’t say that very often). Very intense, with a peppery attack. Fruity notes (lemon and tangerine) with a strong woody dimension. Raisins. Hints of smoke. Finish: very long finish on oak and spices. Warm and drying.  Again a true classic. Not cheap but simply excellent. - Ruben (whiskynotes.be)

Paul John's Christmas Editions not only vary in their presentation every year, they also get matured in different ways. The 2022 edition, for example, was finished in ex-bourbon, brandy, and peated Oloroso sherry casks. This, the seventh in the series, employs less cask types but yields a flavour that is just as complex as past expressions (according to the distillery). The all-Indian malt was drawn from a virgin oak casks and finished in Caribbean rum casks resulting in notes of coconut, candied orange and toasted oak, with fruit tart, salted toffee, and chewy tannins on the finish - a perfect festive dram! 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill-filtered.

John distilleries have created a special Christmas edition every year since 2018. Once again, the distillery has aimed for a rich, exuberantly fruity expression to make Christmas all the merrier! 46% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Delectable aromas of creamy vanilla custard with a dash of dark chocolate enhanced with rich dry fruits. Palate: Deep flavours of sweet oak, a delicate mocha laced with warm caramel, succulent vanilla and hints of soft spice. Finish: Rich, exuberantly fruity and deliciously lingering.

Other reviews... Can a whiskey taste like Christmas? What would that mean, anyway—pine needles, peppermint, reindeer dung and cheer? Indian distillery Paul John’s new 2022 Christmas Edition single malt tastes like none of that, thankfully, but it does actually sip like a holiday whisky—which is an impressive feat. A little background on the distillery first—Paul John is located in Goa on India’s west coast, and is one of the better known brands in the rising tide of Indian single malt whisky. The climate there is tropical and humid, meaning the whisky matures faster. To be precise, that means the liquid interacts with the barrels more kinetically than in a cooler, milder climate like Scotland or Ireland, but more so than in Kentucky which cools down quite a bit in the winter. The whisky is distilled from six-row barley and matured onsite, with a high angel’s share of eight to ten percent as opposed to Kentucky’s four or five percent. There are many different expressions available from Paul John to try, and this is the fifth installment of the Christmas Edition... It’s easy to get caught up in the holiday spirit and envision this as having Christmasy flavors because of the packaging, marketing and power of suggestion. That being said, check out these tasting notes (and hopefully the actual whisky) and see what you think. The nose starts out with figgy, malty aromas, along with some fresh wood and a bit of licorice. There’s also a whiff of fireplace smoke in the background, perhaps from that whisper of peat. On the palate, there’s fruit cake (in a good way), cinnamon, raisin and—stick with me here—a tiny hint of candy cane peppermint. On the finish, there’s some dark syrupy berries, caramel, and a soupçon of savory jus. That’s Christmas apps, dinner and dessert all in one sip. - robbreport.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Rich aromas of sweet oak, dry spice, baked apples and peaches, enhanced with dark chocolate. Palate: Soft and sweet flavours of mellow peat, orange dark chocolate, and a light peppery spice laced with delicious plum cake and butterscotch.

Finish: Deep, creamy and lingering with a profuse hazelnut laced with dark chocolate.

BEST ASIAN WHISKY 2018 - JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE

The latest highlight in the Asian whisky category is an unpeated expression from the sunny shores of Goa. Paul John is one of the world's biggest distilleries, largely due to sales of their flagship brand, 'Original Choice' which sells over 11 million cases annually to whisky loving locals. However, Paul John's ultimate dream was to launch world-class single malts from India. While his entry level range has succeeded in that, this bottling ups the ante. Named after 'Kanya', the dignified Indian counterpart of Virgo, the sixth zodiac sign on the Indian solar calendar, it comes matured for seven years in American oak casks and is considered by some to be one of the softest and most elegant Indian whiskies bottled to date. So good, that Jim Murray voted it the Best Asian Whisky for 2018 - even beating the Japanese! To our knowledge, this is the first (and possibly last time) it's shipped to Australia. From an outturn of 1500 bottles, numbers available are tiny. 50% Alc./Vol. Collectable.

Other reviews... When a distillery can find honey at the very end of its flavour range and profile, you know they have cracked it. Superb! 96 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2018.

...Imagine there’s a janitor sweeping up the bisected fruit fallen from that fruit-slicing app: cherries, cooked peach, lingonberry, orange peel, fresh apple, fruit syrup, waxy leaves, and taffy chews. Plump mouthfeel with sweet baked fruits, it’s sticky and concentrated with a fabulous fruitiness at this strength. Sugared apple, baked orange, tart plum, clove, and aniseed. Unpeated and matured for around 7 years. A lot of buck for the bang. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2018

Notes from the producers... Nose: A light citrus with manuka honey arrives early; an intense malt is infused with ripe peach, apricot and vanilla. Taste: Superb mouthfeel of rich creaminess. The oak delivers a soft, sweet, delectable butterscotch. Finish: Warm spices suffuse the toasted oak, and the slightest of saltiness ensures the friendliest of finishes. Balance: A very complex whisky, the big malt and intricately well balanced dryness makes this whisky one of the softest Indian whiskies ever bottled.

In addition to their core range, Paul John regularly offer limited editions. Here's another that arrived a little late for Christmas in Australia (nevertheless, the liquid inside is what's most important!) The fourth release in the 'holiday spirits' series sees maturation in a combination of casks: namely, ex-bourbon, Port, and Madeira. The influence of dessert wines in the finishing process imparts fruit and spice flavours with yuletide associations, balanced with light smokiness. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Finish: Rather long and warming notes with Cocoa, light peat and spices. Balances: An exotic and multi-faceted peated malt with deep, creamy flavours and a rich finish.

As a sound introduction to the Oloroso matured genre, this is hard to beat. The sherry character comes through in high definition - especially on the palate with intense flavours of walnut and date cake, mixed nuts and dried fruits while tangy Seville orange and vibrant spices lift the finish. Cocoa, salted hazelnuts, new leather and drying astringency follow in the aftertaste. It could be better integrated, but it fares well against many more expensive Scottish equivalents. High ABV and zero chill filtration is an added bonus. 48% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Taste :Soft and sweet, with nutty chocolate and Melton Hunt cake. Finish :Long, intense and sweet with delicious heavy spices imbibed from the Oloroso casks, a dash of coffee mocha and sumptuous dark chocolate. Balance :An intense and a complex single malt with a sensational explosion of incredible flavours. 48% Alc./Vol.

Jim Murray's third best whisky for 2021, now selling for upwards of $800. "Quite spectacular." - whiskyadvocate.com

Honoured as the third best whisky in the world in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, we have secured a very small allocation of this already legendary Paul John limited edition, strictly limited to one bottle per customer.

The much anticipated follow up to 'Kanya', Mithuna forms part of the distillery's Zodiac series. While it's labelled without an age statement, reports have it to be matured for four years in American Virgin Oak, followed by a finishing for two years in First fill Bourbon Barrels. It's unpeated, non chill-filtered and bottled at a massive 58%, promising a taste of Goa unlike almost anything else Paul John has released to date. The consensus amongst bloggers is that this is also an Indian whisky for cask strength Bourbon freaks: Complex, bold, intense and absolutely delicious. We have received a second allocation at the original pricing. At auction you can expect to pay $350+. Other retailers are asking $800 and beyond.

Other reviews... rarely am I lost for words...oily but at the same time embracing and moulded like no other whisky I have ever encountered... this is kind of an Indian version of a William Larue Weller, showing that same extraordinary intensity, complexity and beauty. It is that very rarest of things... This is a whisky to devour... while it devours you. 97 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

...Named after the 3rd zodiac sign of Indian astrology—but then of course you knew that—the nose has red cherry laces, ground black pepper, and hints of ginger, resin, and toffee apple. The flavors are colossal; beginning with warm fruity caramels and sweet vanilla desserts, it shows off burnt sugar toppings of crème brûlée, Seville orange peel, indulgent dark chocolate, generous layers of maltiness, and delicious mocha notes. Quite spectacular. 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Notes from Paul John... "Hues of old oak and sophisticated aromas of liquorice with gentle beeswax lead to a luxuriant delivery of ulmo honey on crisp toast, and tender notes of vanilla. Chewy flavours of coffee mocha, orange peel and delicate spice float on active tannins while gentle oils enjoy gists of dark cocoa tones. The finish is gratifyingly long and complex with multi-toned sugars and delicate honeys. Renowned for contradictive strengths, the characteristics of Gemini are epitomized by this Indian single malt as mesmerizing layers of austere, dry tannins are challenged in equal measure by resplendent sugars and mocha on delicate oils."

    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

One of fifty editions in the ‘Icons of Wales’ series that was launched in December 2021, No.8 references the wonderful Welsh word, ‘Hiraeth’. Difficult to translate into English, some interpret it to mean ‘yearning’ or ‘homesickness’, but the BBC’s Roy Noble summed it up very nicely as: “a longing for your homeland, your heritage and your very being”. A vatting of mostly double distilled, ex-bourbon matured whisky with a smaller proportion of single-distilled, STR cask finished single malt, it's also Penderyn's first release predominantly composed of malt from the set of double stills that were installed in 2014. The result is a sleek, softer-styled whisky with medium-bodied flavours of wafer-biscuit and vanilla that become fresher and fruitier as the distillate gains ground. A feather-weight, integrated finish rounds off an easily approachable dram. Comes beautifully presented and bottled without filtration at 46% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Elegant and floral with light oak notes, vanilla, raisins, toffee apples, citrus peel and a hint of lime. Palate: A delicate smooth single malt with honeyed fruits, vanilla, cinnamon spice and a hint of nutmeg. Finish: Soft honey and vanilla notes fade to a malty finish.

The term 'Sherry bomb' is sometimes flaunted when talking about a whisky drawn from a super-active cask. In the same way, what we have here could well be described as a 'Shiraz bomb'. The deepest, darkest Penderyn we've ever encountered due to long aging and a finishing in red wine casks from Bullers in Rutherglen, it fuses Penderyn's seductive malt with stewed red fruits, wine tannins and a spicy finish mixing dried coconut, cocoa and lingering red berry notes. Tasting a bit like the whisky equivalent of Lamingtons, or perhaps fruit mince pies, it's exclusively bottled for the Australian importers with a yield of 157 bottles, trumping last year's 17 year old as the oldest release to date from the distillery. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 40ml sample.

Notes from the importers... Nose: Rich blackberries and blackcurrants, gooseberries, ripe cherries. Dried fruits: prunes, sultanas and figs. Salted caramel and demerara sugar. Taste: Dark fruits: black grapes and black cherries, oak tannin dryness and cocoa bitterness. Vanilla, tingling spices of black pepper, nutmeg and a black coffee hint. Finish: Dark fruits fading into bitter dark chocolate with notes of clove and black pepper.

First offered in 2018 for the Travel Retail market, 'Faraday' begins life in ex-bourbon casks followed by a finishing in ex-ruby port casks. Named after Penderyn's unique still developed by a team led by Dr David Faraday (a descendant of Sir Michael Faraday, discoverer of the electrolytic cell), it consists of a single "pot" beneath a tall rectifying column. Whilst Scottish distilleries generally use two conventional stills for their production, and the Irish three, the technology developed at Penderyn enables an extremely "clean" and flavourful spirit to be produced from the single still at an industry high of 92%. The design is also energy efficient. No doubt this bottling was created to show off the distillery's house style to a broader audience. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Gently light Ruby Port with perfume of fruits, raisins and vanilla notes. Taste: Delicate and creamy with dried fruits, very floral honey and wood spices Finish: Medium and gentle, sweet but at the same time has a nutty dryness.

"If James Bond wants his dry Martinis made with whisky, I suspect this would be his choice." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

This beautiful rose-tinted Penderyn was matured in ex-Tawny Port cask #PT266 yielding 724 bottles at cask strength (60.5% abv). It was the first time Penderyn offered such a cask to the European market (previously we believe they'd been reserved for export). Distilled in June 2013 and bottled in 2019, we've stumbled across a handful of cases that were lost in the supplier's warehouse. They represent part of a small consignment of large Portuguese port pipes sourced by Penderyn, but this particular barrel was extremely old, probably having held wine for decades before reaching the distillery, and it reads like an alpha barrel. Jim Murray has ranked it as one of the best Penderyns to date in his 2022 Bible. This kind of wine input typically infuses aromas and flavours of black grapes, fresh plums, figs and red berries. They'll be set against drier, nutty oak and peppery spices. Very limited stocks. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Wonderfully dry and sophisticated with the grape skin as close to concentrated as you'll ever find; such precision to the cask, such concentration needed to work out the spellbinding layering, you'll need to mop your brow as you concentrate. Most amazing is how the malt forms thin, delicate stratum among the much more intense fruit tones. The sugars, after their initial burst of acacia honey, are on ration and it is the spiced dryness of the fruit which dominates.... but that fragile malt ensures the salty plum and grape skins don't get all their own way; I'd say the spice fade on this must be nudging perfection. The fruits fatten at last, briefly, before going back into their skinny shell... If James Bond wants his dry Martinis made with whisky, I suspect this would be his choice. 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

Sometimes reminiscent of young cognac, occasionally middle-aged Bourbon or even the most delicate Irish Pot Still, Penderyn's style shows astonishing dexterity. The fact that it melts into a variety of woods so effortlessly explains why it's one of the most consistently praised malts in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible. It rarely rates below 90 points and frequently breaches the 95 point barrier. Follow Whisky Advocate and the recent tastings show a similar pattern.

Young, bourbon cask matured and bottled at around 46%, the spirit is alive with floral and tropical fruit notes like kiwi, papaya and mango. This expression aims to show another side of Penderyn. x-Bourbon cask matured from June 2004 until 2009 then filled into an x-Rutherglen wine barrel that previously contained Buller's premium 'Calliope Shiraz', the lengthy finishing and overall age ups the mouthfeel, spice and fruit. Master blender, Aista Phillips describes it as "full bodied, with a lot influence from the wine cask" - which is no understatement. Firstly, the aromatics are exceptional. Rarely will you find a wood-aged spirit so expressive as this from the very first pour. The wine cask is evident on the nose in a dried berry / cherry-chocolate overlay, beneath which lie those indelible Penderyn fruits and florals; Grapes, nectarine and elderflower mingle with poached pear and spice, laid over a canvas of vanilla and crisp barley. Secondly, this is Penderyn amplified: mouth-filling and pulsing with energy. If the wine barrel seems to have tempered some of the sugars, particularly on entry where a gentle bittersweetness is evident, the pleasure is heightened at the finish where the flavours soar. A burst of juicy barley trails off with hints of dried orange peel, elderflower, vanilla, dried coconut and chilli chocolate. A sweet thread of fruitiness lingers and the persistence is deceptively long. Uncut, it's a beast by Penderyn standards, however it doesn't take much water to temper, so experiment carefully. Drawn from Cask #AW1 with an outturn of 203 bottles, it's worth noting that we only had access to a small sample and suspect that with longer exposure this would be even better again. One of the rarest and the oldest whisky Penderyn have offered to date, the uniquely Australian contribution should make it all the more significant for collectors and drinkers. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Raspberrries, redcurrants, cherries, strawberries with a hint of walnut and a warm vanilla spice. Palate: Smooth with soft spices, red apples. Finish: Almonds with roasted coffee beans.

A big seller in France and one of the more full-bodied expressions Penderyn offers, this fruit'n'nut chocolate affair has a soft, rounded mouthfeel, light red berry character and a fresh, vibrant finish. A significant step up from the 41% bottlings, the extra ABV gives Penderyn a confident stride. It also demonstrates why they continue with Port maturations. The fruity wine influence clearly compliments the distillate's slightly tropical style. 46% Alc./Vol Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Subtle, well-judged port cask influence integrates well with the Penderyn spirit to produce an entrancing whisky. Substantial aromas of chocolate, dried fruits, dates, cocoa, snuff, and a prickle of spices rise from the glass. There’s good weight in the mouth, with flavors of chocolate, gingersnap, dates, dried cranberry, forest honey, a supportive chorus of spices, and a heavenly finish of dark sweet fruits.

The latest addition to the range, the Penderyn 41 Aur Cymru (Welsh Gold) has been matured in Bourbon casks before finishing in Madeira casks. It seems the move to bottle at 41%, was due to the huge success of the Port wood edition in mainland Europe that was bottled at that same strength.

Other reviews... (bottle code - March 11 release). Had me worried at first. The nose and to a lesser extent, the delivery were unusually thin and niggardly. But recovers from the mid ground onwards with its usual fruity charm. 84.5 points 41% Alc./Vol.

Like the other Celtic nations, Wales has a long history of spirit distillation, dating back to the 4th century, with a man known as Reaullt Hir distilling on Bardsey Island off the North Wales coast. The ingredients of this early spirit, known universally as “aqua-vitae” or ‘gwirod’ in the Welsh language, was a mix of barley, yeast and honey distilled to make a basic raw spirit. Much later in 1705 a small commercial distillery at Dale in Pembrokeshire opened. This distillery was owned by Evan Williams's family who later emigrated to the USA and helped found the Kentucky Whiskey Industry. ( His name is attached to a number of high quality bourbons to this day). On 14th September 2000, history was made when the first distillation was carried out at The Welsh Whisky Company's Penderyn Distillery, in the picturesque Brecon Beacons National Park. Penderyn Single Malt Whisky was later launched on St David's Day, 1st March 2004, to huge critical acclaim from both acknowledged whisky experts and "ordinary" consumers. Noted Whisky writer, Jim Murray, had the privilege of been the first person outside the company to analyse the new product at the official launch commenting, “I told them they were tasting not just an historic malt whisky, but one that deserved the highest praise in its own right.”

The Welsh Whisky Company uses a unique design of still for its malt whisky distillation. The still consists of a single "pot" beneath a tall rectifying column and was developed by a team led by Dr David Faraday (a descendant of Sir Michael Faraday, discoverer of the electrolytic cell). Whilst the Scottish distilleries generally use two conventional stills for their production, and the Irish three, the technology developed at Penderyn enables an extremely "clean" and flavourful spirit to be produced from the single still. The design is also extremely energy efficient. Malted barley wash to Welsh Whisky's specification is obtained from the well-known Welsh regional brewer, S A Brain & Co. The still is currently charged once or twice each day and spirit is drawn off at over 91% alcohol. The majority of the whisky spirit is matured using casks sourced from the American bourbon industry (mostly Jack Daniel's, Evan Williams and Buffalo Trace). Penderyn Single Malt is then "finished" using a number of types of fortified wine barrel, mainly rare and difficult-to-obtain Madeira barriques obtained directly from the island of Madeira. The whisky is finally bottled at 46% without chill filtration.

Penderyn Single Malt is released regularly in small batches, therefore each bottling will vary slightly in style. The end product of this process has been described as, “A lovely, light, elegant bouquet, reminiscent of Lowland Malts, with its slightly grassy/earthy rich fruit and creamy Bourbon oak complexity. The palate is superb every bit as delicate as the nose suggests. Gloriously smooth in the mouth. It reminds me of a fine, young Cognac. The Bourbon oak flavours mingle with the Madeira laced fruit, cereal and malt biscuit. Lovely length with a finish that lasts for ages and leaves a hint of spices and salt.” Whisky writer, Jim Murray has variously desrcibed the Penderyn Malt as ”salivating stuff…so wonderfully lip-smacking…a little jewel!” 46% Alc./Vol.

Similar in vein to the 2005 edition, Penderyn have re-released its 'Grand Slam' rugby edition in 2008, noted as "The offical Whisky of the Welsh Rugby Union". The packaging is decorated with history and facts based around the Welsh rugby team, inluding, the 2008 championship ladder, results of the games, a record of Wales’ 10 grand slams in the last 100 years and a blow by blow account of the important grand slam 2008 winner against France.

The whisky is labeled as 'Aur Cymru' meaning 'Welsh Gold' a Madeira cask finished whisky currently in their range.

As Wales' only single malt whisky, this limited edition like the 2005 is expected to become very collectable in the future.

You'd think that to mark the winning of a Grand Slam, they'd bring out a real hefty, hairy-arsed dram full of spice and vim. But no: it's a gentle giant. Are they trying to suggest the Championship was won by craft, guile and an understated touch of class...?

Since its inception in 2000, Master Distiller, Dr Jim Swan has been carefully monitoring the evolution of each of the barrels in the warehouse. More recently, he's commenced selecting one or two of the very best Penderyn single cask whiskies for release. They're bottled at cask strength without chill filtration.

Other reviews,.., [Notes indicative only as they refer to a different barrel] The unusual distilling process and some maturation in Madeira casks has given standard Penderyn a liqueur-like, perfumey quality many whisky fans don’t care for. This is a single bourbon cask bottling of the 11th cask the distillery ever filled, to mark its 10th anniversary, and is less cloying, less feminine, and more gutsy than the standard version. It’s also very palatable and of excellent quality. Some will make it to America, but the price tag will deter all but the most passionate. 90 points - www.maltadvocate.com (Summer 2011) Reviewed by: Dominic Roskrow

"Beautiful, languid mouthfeel with luxuriant raisins meeting spiced up muscovado sugars and molasses..." 94 points, Jim Murray

Tasting note: Matured in a combination of bourbon barrels and oloroso sherry casks. Amber topaz. Young Bourbon sweetness underscores oloroso on the nose; spicy peach, cinnamon, fruit cake and orange zest add complexity to the oily pot still notes. Reminds you of quality Irish - silky and graceful on entry - only the weight of the malt gives this the body of a solid Speysider. The oloroso is fairly discreet. The finish is tangy and lively with peel-like freshness, prunes and hints of fruit cake through the spicy ending. Impressive length. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Faultless moist fruitcake... beautiful, languid mouthfeel with luxuriant raisins meeting spiced up muscovado sugars and molasses... A fabulous fade.... goes out if its way to do the simple things very well - and deliciously - indeed.

[Jan 2011 bottling] Sophisticated hardly covers it...more moody swings between salty dry and vaguely sweet...drier than the lips of Welsh Male Voice Choir singing in the Sahara. But a whole lot more harmonious. 94 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2013

...An implacable tide of sherry aromas, succulent sultana and currant fruit, dried apple, bara brith tea cake, treacle, black tea, and fabulous baking spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. A thick, chewy, malty mouthful with chocolate, Horlicks, coffee notes, and that well-honed Penderyn spice character woven in among the dark fruit. A sweet swan song of clove and peppercorn meets espresso, molasses, dark toffee, and burnt staves. Quite a gem, this one. 92 points

Originally created from three ex-bourbon single casks and rejuvenated casks selected by the late Jim Swan, it was so well received, subsequent bottlings followed. 'Rich Oak' now forms part of the distillery's 'Gold Range'.

Other reviews... As is the Penderyn way, this cleverly reveals the other side of the coin. Quietly intense and far less domineering, this is an easily overlooked gem of a whisky! 46% Alc./Vol. 95.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

Chocolate, rich berry fruit, honeydew, green grape, oat cookies, dark toffee, and oak spices on the nose. Flavors of chocolate flakes, Oreo, cinnamon, malt, and hazelnut, with a concentration of spices on the tip of the tongue, before a flavorsome finish of Hershey bars. It’s delicious and well-made, but occupies a very specific place on the flavor spectrum, so one to try before you buy. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick (Winter 2019)

Other reviews... A blend of whiskies fully matured in first-fill bourbon, oloroso sherry, and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, all mingled after aging (no age stated). The flipside of the bourbon-barreled expression, with the impact of sherry firmly evident. The blend of oloroso and PX — alongside the bourbon barrels — makes for some added complexity, albeit less clarity. The sherry isn’t as sharp on the nose or the palate as you might expect — particularly with PX in the mix — leading to both aromatics and flavors of Eastern spices, fresh leather, and a pecan note. The finish is surprisingly mild, acknowledging the sherry influence only modestly. Mostly, it’s the citrus that’s endemic to sherry aging that is more muted here than I expected, though that’s not altogether a bad thing. Still, I was expecting to see more power out of this bottling. I sipped on the Origin expression for quite a bit longer. 43% Alc./Vol. - drinkhacker.com
