Glenfiddich Experiment 04 Fire & Cane Rum Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 43%Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
For many fans of 'Fiddich, this is the favourite of the experimental series, preceded by Glenfiddich India Pale Ale Cask Finish, Project XX and Winter Storm.Master distiller, Brian Kinsman comments, “We started with a question: What would happen if we did something with peat that we had not done before? The answer is an unconventional and unexpected whisky, one that is truly surprising.”
In the end, we get a peated malt that comes in at 5 ppm (phenol parts per million) with a finishing in South American rum casks for three months. Described as a "Highland Peat fire", it’s the first partially-peated Glenfiddich to be finished in Latin rum casks.
Other reviews... n24 peat...! On a Glenfiddich...!!! But not just any old peat. Sometimes a Speysider pops up with a phenolic version which is attractive and quirky. This nose, however, is so relaxed, so happily intertwined with the layers of tannin, the islands of barley, that you feel like standing up and applauding...; not quite a giant nose...but so, so gentle...; t24 you expect the softest of landings on the palate, and that is exactly what you get: not something that adds to the is the norm so far rum casks are concerned. The phenols have a wonderfully translucent effect: thick, yet through it you can still detect the working of the barley and with increasing degrees the firmness of the cask. What sugars that are leached from the rum influence do not try to harden the arteries, but they certainly help provide an undulating effect between the softer and firmer lines; f23.5 brilliantly effective and very even spice; b24.5 I think those of us in the industry who can now be described in the "veteran" category can only smile at the prospect of tasting a full blown peaty Glenfiddich: the distillery that once stood for the cleanest, least peat influenced malt in the whole of Scotland. But when you nose and taste this, you wonder why they didn't take this route from day one, for rarely do you find a distillery that creates a peaty malt so naturally to the phenolic manor born. This is not a gimicky whisky. No, this is something to be respected and cherished for thing of beauty it actually is.
96 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021The fourth release in Glenfiddich’s Experimental Series, this expression comprises peated and unpeated single malt, matured in bourbon barrels and then finished for 3 months in Latin American rum casks. A nose of spiced rum, vanilla, ripe pears, and pipe tobacco. Baked apple, sweet oak, and cinder toffee on the palate, with ashy smoke. Peppery sweet peat, rum, and brittle toffee in the relatively short finish. Best Value.

Glenglassaugh Portsoy Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 49.1%Another side of Glenglassaugh is on offer in a rich and smoky NAS expression: Portsoy is named after an ancient fishing village not far from the distillery. Making use of relatively rare peated reserves and bottled at higher-than-normal strength, it is Highland made, but sports all the requisite notes of an island profile including aromas of iodine and menthol mixed up with lanolin and mesquite smoke. This is the most characterful expression in the new line up, and peat has a lot to do with that. Oily phenols amplify the mouthfeel nicely, countering the fruitiness of the malt before a crack of pepper adds spice and the fruit rebounds. Delicious uncut, you get the sense Portsoy has been created to capture a broader audience than just the peated market, and it should do just that. Bourbon, sherry and port wine cask matured. 49.1% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The colour is coppery amber and the nose is packed with aromas of caramel, dried fruits and soft gentle sweet peat smoke. It feels rich and honeyed with warming spices coming through the smoke, along with a hint of cocoa powder and orange oil. The balance between peat and sweetness is very enticing. On the palate this whisky continues on the rich and honeyed theme. There are plenty of autumnal ripe orchard fruits on show - think apple and pear especially - plus a selection of stone fruits including apricot and plum. The sweet and gentle peat smoke wraps around everything and has a warming edge with a pinch of spice - this is more earthy home fire than bonfire. Hint of chocolate and gingerbread further add to the depth and complexity. The finish is long, well rounded and balanced although a touch ashy towards the end. This feels like an autumnal whisky and a big hug in a glass. - whiskyforeveryone.blogspot.com

Glenglassaugh Sandend Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 50.5%No.1 in Whisky Advocate's top 20 whiskies for 2023.
Readers will recall it wasn't that long ago that Glenglassaugh's lengthy closure came to an end. Purchased in 2008 by legendary blender, Billy Walker, alongside its sister distilleries, Benriach and the famed Glendronach, in 2016 all three distilleries were subsequently acquired by US corporate giant, Brown-Forman. A brand overhaul was imminent and now includes new packaging and new high-strength NAS whiskies said to be influenced by the vibrant coastal region. All were matured in Glenglassaugh's local bond stores. The Sandend is a mix of x-Bourbon, sherry and manzanilla casks with a flavour profile summed up by the Master Blender, Rachel Barrie as "waves of tropical sweetness with a crack of sea salt". Next to Glenglassaugh's new 12 year old, it is certainly more fruity, though perhaps less complex. Sweet, biscuity malt brings hints of dried mango and semi-ripe banana. Those notes are echoed in a medium to full bodied delivery, and although the 'tropicality' isn't as intense as the label suggests, the texture is juicy, borderline oily, with a salt'n'pepper bite wrapping up the profile in lively fashion. Comparable to Old Pulteney, or perhaps young Clynelish, Sandend is a satisfying new addition to the coastal genre. 50.5% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Our annual Top 20 Whiskies list is always filled with A-list names, along with a few lesser-knowns that make the grade. But it’s unusual for one of the latter to outshine the entire field, yet that’s precisely what happened this year, as Whisky Advocate’s panelists plucked a relative unknown from a group of big-name contenders. As we tasted, little did we know there was an upset in the making. Winning in a nearly unanimous vote, single malt scotch Glenglassaugh Sandend became our 2023 Whisky of the Year... This non-age statement expression, named for the bay offshore, is bright and delicate, with aromas of citrus and minerality leading to a luscious palate filled with layers of flavor revealing peach, apricot, honey, pound cake, and vanilla, all accented with a touch of sea salt. Rolling spices help create an explosive, long-lasting finish. It’s gentle yet complex, but above all it’s an easy sipper you can just sit back and enjoy. ...it represents pretty fair value for a single malt scotch. 95 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...The colour is straw gold and the nose is sweet and fruity with a hint of salinity. Aromas of honey, vanilla fudge and juicy sultana rise from the glass along with candied lemon, green apple and plenty of tropical fruit - think of pineapple, mango and papaya in particular. There are also hints of white chocolate and toasted nuts. On the palate this whisky is bright and vibrant with the delicious sweet and fruity notes from the nose continuing. The tropical fruits are right up front now - pineapple, mango, papaya again plus a hint of peach - but are quickly joined by juicy raisin and soft ripe green apple. There is also a hint of cooked pear. Then come honey, vanilla essence and butterscotch. Sitting in the background are some warming woody spices (cinnamon especially), a little drying oak plus something reminiscent of hay or straw and yeasty note that is like freshly baked bread. The finish is long with a distinct apple-like quality drawing it out. This is a very summery and juicy dram. - whiskyforeveryone.blogspot.com

Glenglassaugh Torfa Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $109.99$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 50%2014 marked a benchmark with "Torfa" - the first peated whisky from this revived distillery, fully matured in ex-bourbon barrels and peated to 20ppm. It takes its name from the Old Norse language with which the Scots dialect spoken in North East Scotland has an affinity and translates to “turf” or “peat”. One the nose, white pepper and sweet earthy phenols combine with beeswax and biscuity malt becoming more cocoa-like after extended time in the glass. The full bodied, succulent delivery offers toasted barley, hints of fruit and a superb slathering of sweet peat that melts in your mouth with near zero heat, buzzing spices ricocheting through the finish. An uncomplicated but very pure smokey Highland style. 50% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... Appears happy and well suited in its new smoky incarnation. 90 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024
...Torfa is old Norse for “peat,” and this Scotch delivers on that promise with delicacy and finesse. Light golden in the glass, the nose shows a vanilla aroma tinged with peat smoke and oak accents. The palate is bright and briny up front, with a peat smoke character becoming more pronounced with each successive sip. That smoky-saline balance provokes cravings for oysters and aged cheeses. 92 points - wineenthusiast.com
Bonfire smoke, ozone, orchard fruits, malt, and black pepper are present on the nose. Slightly savory on the smooth palate, with sweet peat smoke, honey, dark chocolate, and a very mild maritime note. Ginger, apricot, and more sweet peat in the finish. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com
First tasted April 2014... Pale straw gold. Opening sniff detects hints of vanilla wafer biscuit, dried grass and white pepper; more cocoa like after exposure as mild peat infuses dark chocolate, accentuating with time in the glass. Quite sweet but remains in check with the mid palate featuring juicy vanilla malt and the finish highlighting the peat as wet-wool / lanolin. Controlled spices add length and continue into an attractive choc-peat fade. Smokey, but in an accessible Caol Ila kind of way. Nicely done. 93 points

Glenglassaugh Revival Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $89.99$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 46%Glenglassaugh has been described as a 'coastal' distillery, being located in northern Speyside near Glen Deveron and Banff. Founded in 1875, between 1960 and 1986 it produced malt whiskies for the blending market, in particular the Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse blends. However, it suffered from the recession riddled decline that plagued the Scotch whisky industry in the early 1980s and was mothballed in 1986. It restarted production in November 2008 after being acquired by independent investors, the Edrington Group, following a complete refurbishment by the new owners.
The malt has always been popular with blenders so few official distillery bottlings have ever made it to market. Until recently, that is. In 2009 the new company released some of the old stocks with outstanding success. At the 2009 International Wine and Spirit Competition Awards the 30 Year Old expression was awarded a Gold Medal (Best in Class) and the trophy for Best Cask Strength Scotch Whisky and the 40 Year Old was awarded Gold Medal (Best in Class) and the trophy for Best 40 Year Old Scotch Whisky. The 40 year old was also awarded Best 40 Year Old Scotch Whisky and 96 points in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.
Glenglassaugh Revival is the first widely-available single malt from the resurrected distillery and comes matured in both first and refill casks then finished in first-fill oloroso sherry butts for a period of six months. It presents a teasing bouquet that rewards patience; gradually developing with sponge cake, vanilla, cream biscuits and fresh oak. Deliciously crisp on delivery, evoking caramelised fruits and cream tea biscuits, balanced by suggestions of lemon tart and straw at the finish. Like its sister bottling 'Torfa' , this boasts lovely purity and poise and represents a massive improvement over its first incarnation (circa 2013). 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Matured in a combination of used red-wine casks and Bourbon barrels, then finished in oloroso Sherry barrels, this honey-hued Scotch has a Sherried peach-nectar aroma. The palate shows notes of almond and cedar, finishing with hits of lemon peel and smoke. 89 points - wineenthusiast.com
First tasted January 2013: [from a 10 ml sample]. Pale gold. Scents of flat ginger beer and vague cereals present in the initial pass, gaining sweetness and definition with subsequent sniffs. Opens light and lively in the mouth though a tad sulphury followed by bittersweet spices at mid palate. Warming spirit. Thins out, tailing off to a delicate and rather fleeting conclusion. 86 points

Glenglassaugh Evolution Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $99.99$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 50%Tasted from a small sample, this re-vamped version of Evolution presents with sultry scents of beeswax, pineapple pudding and fruit’n’nut chocolate. Rounded and poised with a chocolaty edge to the malt, following through to a juicy, textural finish featuring tangy tropical fruits and a spicy burst that fans out in the mouth, it's a malt with a fine sweet-dry balance marking a step up from it's cask strength predecessor. Delicious. Matured in x Tennessee whiskey barrels. 50% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Vanilla and almond aromas are echoed on the palate, alongside a strong resin note and a gentler wave of smoke. At 100 proof, there's a predictable wallop of alcohol heat on the close. 87 points - wineenthusiast.com
This is the second edition of Evolution, first released in 2013, and the ABV has been reduced from 57.2% to 50%. Like the first, it was matured in first-fill Tennessee whiskey barrels. Glengoyne Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 59.6%Launched in 2012 this unpeated, non chill-filtered, natural strength beauty ups the ante on Glengoyne's typically delicate spirit. Made by blending first-fill sherry-matured whisky with refill-matured malt, Batch 1 (now sold out) had whisky lovers wanting for more. Consider this as a must-try alternative to Aberlour a'bunadh or Glenfarclas 105.
Note: Alcohols will vary from batch to batch.Quite a ride, and a hell of a lot of whisky for the money!
Tasting note: [BATCH 4 tasted] Pours bright copper forming thick tears on the sides of the glass. Vapoury, spirity-prickle; Flashes of balsamic give way to moist fruit slice and hints of banana cake...needs time to penetrate the alcoholic lift. Ten minutes settles the bouquet adding vanilla bean, Christmas pudding and fruit'n'nut chocolate. Massive bittersweet malt attack, reigned in by resiny oak, numbing alcohol and unrelenting spices. Brawny, but better balance the second time round as air contact seems to both expand and integrate the flavour range. Adding water draws out a lovely caramel / honeycomb note on the nose, relieving the bitter edge and extending the palate. Quite a ride, and a hell of a lot of whisky for the money. 58.8% Alc./Vol. -

Glengyle Distillery Kilkerran Heavily Peated Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Batch 11Campbeltown, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 57.9%Even though this is a NAS release, you can expect Glengyle's whisky-making team are refining their blending skills and introducing older material into each batch. So it makes sense that some tasters are describing this as one of the best, if not the best batch in the series to date. Drawn from 90% Bourbon casks with the remainder out of Sherry, complexity will be a strong point. The Kilkerran style we've come to know and love includes notes of key lime pie, toasted rye bread and peat smoke, toasted marshmallows and campfire embers with hints of vanilla and custard - and of course, that Campbeltown smokiness carrying through to the finish, along with a mineral note to round things off. Even after dilution, these natural strength expressions can remain beautifully fresh. If you're partial to the uber-peaty, invigorating coastal blast that comes with Longrow at its finest, this will be for you. In line with previous releases, Batch 11 weighs in at 57.9% Alc./Vol and comes bottled non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... A true experience for the senses – powerfully peppery, with a comforting sweetness and the unmistakable Campbeltown DNA. The combination of intense glow, fruity freshness, and creamy depth makes this a whisky that shows character without being overpowering. Those who love strong smoke but also appreciate subtle nuances will find this a reliable companion in their glass. - whiskybase.com
Another great batch from this series! They are always top quality, but this one is one of the better ones! - whiskybase.com
...Both batch 9 (WF 86) and batch 10 (WF 85) were excellent, though perhaps ever so slightly immature, a tad on the rough side for my taste, but let’s admit it, we were nitpicking. Colour: straw. Nose: it’s the 16-year-old, only younger, livelier, and above all far more medicinal. With gallons of iodine tincture and mercurochrome, sea water and a splash of lemon balm infusion, one could almost use this as a balm, an anaesthetic or indeed as a repellent against mosquitoes and, more crucially, midges. Well, no guarantees there. We like it. With water: well now, it rounds out and softens completely, but also brings seaweed and, above all, plenty of sage and tarragon. Worth trying in a béarnaise sauce. Mouth (neat): this slaps you twice across the face, a proper one-two. Brimming with salt, ashes, camphor, iodine tincture, lime, oysters and smoked fish. With water: a more classical peater, though still immensely salty, with notes of machine oil and even penetrating oil. Could come in handy. Finish: very long, with salt, lemon and bitter almonds. Black pepper in the aftertaste. Comments: hey, we’re moving forward! A fine beast, really. We should set up a blind tasting, twelve young Longrows versus twelve young Kilkerrans. Who do you reckon would win? - 87 points - whiskyfun.com
- Glengyle Distillery Kilkerran 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2024 ReleaseCampbeltown, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 46%
The Kilkerran brand has been described as "Springbank's big middle finger to the SWA" for trying to screw them out of a regional designation. In 1998 the Scotch Whisky Association decided to cease referring to Campbeltown as a whisky region. Two distilleries (Springbank & Glen Scotia) simply weren't enough. Prompted to restore the Peninsula's reputation, Hedley Wright, the owner of Springbank envisioned Glengyle as a project to cement Campbeltown as a region proper, rather than just an extension of the Lowlands. Its whiskies are now on just about every malt maniacs short list. Many who were lucky enough to be acquainted with Springbank's output a decade or so ago appreciate that Kilkerran is essentially a slightly less peated version of the same malt - for less dollars. The same distillery team run both operations. There is a slight difference in the production process but the upshot is a lightly peated West Highlander with fresh citrus notes and an oiliness on the palate, plus a little briney, coastal character. Because its profile clocks the range of flavours found in single malt Scotch, it is in many ways quintessential. The 12 year old is the perfect introduction. The 2024 edition was matured in 70% Bourbon and 30% Sherry casks and bottled at their standard strength of 46% without chill filtration. Experience has shown that the best time to buy it is at the start of each allocation cycle while the opening prices hold. Global demand for this distillery is already catching up with Springbank.
Notes from the producers... Initially zesty with citrus notes of lemon cheesecake and an oiliness typical of a Campbeltown whisky. Peat smoke, leather bound books and peppery, spicy notes develop over time, along with sweet sticky toffee pudding. The peat smoke carries through to the finish in campfire embers, with sweet hints of pecan pie and butterscotch.

Glengyle Distillery Kilkerran 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2023 ReleaseCampbeltown, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 46%The culmination of six "Work In Progress" releases is this core bottling from the Glengyle Distillery: a lightly peated and non-chill filtered 12 year old malt matured in a combination of 70% Bourbon casks and 30% Sherry casks. If the intention has been to create an accessible all-rounder that appeals to a wide audience, then this certainly succeeds. Offering a beautiful integration of aromas and flavours ranging from rich cereals, light sea spray freshness, a touch of lanolin and even a farmyard earthiness in the thread of peat stitching the whole together, it straddles the breadth of flavours we’ve enjoyed in the “Work in Progress” series, only delivered in a softer package. Because Kilkerran run just one bottling per annum, allocations will be ongoing - even though this is now part of the core range. 46% Alc./Vol. *All Kilkerran whiskies now arrive without presentation tubes or boxes.
Notes from the producers... Nose – Notes of sweet confectionery introduce this dram, with Turkish delight, pear drops and marzipan apparent on the nose. There are hints of subtle peat smoke, like toasted marshmallows by a campfire. Palate – Initially zesty with citrus notes of lemon cheesecake and an oiliness typical of a Campbeltown whisky. Peat smoke, leather bound books and peppery, spicy notes develop over time, along with sweet sticky toffee pudding. Finish – The peat smoke carries through to the finish in campfire embers, with sweet hints of pecan pie and butterscotch.

Glenlivet 13 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $120.00$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 40%Since about 1900, the foundation of Scotch whisky maturation has been and remains American white oak. Even many ex-sherry casks used in the industry are actually American oak. Grown in the eastern US and parts of Canada, this dense wood contains vanillins which contribute vanilla, chocolate and coconut-like notes to whisky. Used judiciously in a combination of first-fill or refill alternatives, the wood can create a perfect harmony between oak and spirit, adding richness without overpowering. A great example is the whisky in question. At an unusual age statement for single malt, first-fill American oak delivers a Glenlivet of elegance: Sweet but not too sweet, light on its feet yet not light on flavour and with a finely-honed balance of latent fruity malt and spicy warmth. The distillery's subtle ‘pineapple’ note is also evident - a signature floral, estery character that separates it from heavier Speysiders. Today sherry casks may carry more prestige, but this kind of whisky will never lose favour. Highland single malt at its uncomplicated and elemental best. 40% Alc./Vol. French exclusive bottling.
Notes from the producers... From one of the oldest operational distilleries in Scotland. Colour: Bright amber. Nose: Sweet, notes of honey, toffee, toasted oak. Taste: Multilayered, complex, fresh, notes of orange, pear, chocolate, vanilla. Finish: Long lasting, soft, sweet.

Glenlivet 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 40%Speyside, arguably the greatest of the whisky making regions, takes its name from the beautiful River Spey which flows through it and provides many of the distilleries with the water they need in the whisky making process. Only two working distilleries remain in this remote Livet Valley where George Smith began his craft nearly 200 years ago at the Glenlivet distillery. At Glenlivet, casks made of white oak - many of which are imported from bourbon distillers or Spanish sherry makers contribute character to the raw spirits. After 3 years the spirits can be legally sold as Scotch whisky, and after 5 years in barrel many more of the harsh elements have been lost. After 8 to 10 years, interesting characteristics develop, and this is the time when many malts are bottled. Glenlivet is generally held back longer however, and a minimum of twelve years is deemed to be the appropriate bottling age. After more than 18 years in selected casks the Glenlivet becomes a malt whisky of unmistakable honey-rich maturity and depth. Comparing it to one of Scotland's greatest living actors The Malt Advocate described the Glenlivet 18 Year Old as 'mature, rich and sexy.' To date, this malt is the winner of 2 gold medals in the International Wine and Spirit Competition (I.W.S.C.) – one of the most respected competitions of its kind in the world.

Glenlivet 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $169.99$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 40%"...having been steered on a slightly different course again it is just excellent... An expression that has evolved slowly, but quite beautifully." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023
The French Oak Reserve is generally considered one of the better values in the Glenlivet stable. Jim Murray certainly thinks so, giving this mid-range malt a strong recommendation - and he's not the only one. The distillery was one of Scotland's first to employ French oak for ageing whisky. Specifically, Limousin oak, sourced from France’s Dordogne region, the only French forest that is predominantly Quercus Robur. The toughness and coarse (open) grain of the species is a result of nutrient-deficient soils, restricting vertical growth to shorter, wider trunks. It places Limousin oak at one end of the scale in terms of looseness of grain. A consequence is that the release of flavours is aggressive and more oak tannin is extracted than from other oak types, hence, it's used almost exclusively for the maturation of spirits like Cognac rather than wine. In the case of Glenlivet, the whisky is selectively finished in Limousin oak so as not to overpower the fruitiness of the distillate. The wood's low density allows the spirit to cycle deeply in and out of the staves, adding a distinctive and pleasing spiciness that's different to the vanilla-heavy American oak. Bottled at 40%, Glenlivet's French Oak Reserve is not a heavy malt, but at the right price, you do get a terrific everyday drinker.
Other reviews… Many years ago when this first came out it wasn't very good, to be honest. Then it was re-shaped, upped a gear and became a very enjoyable dram, indeed. Now having been steered on a slightly different course again it is just excellent... An expression that has evolved slowly, but quite beautifully. 93 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2023
...Antique amber color. This whisky maintains the elegance cherished by Glenlivet enthusiasts, but finishing the whisky in limousin oak produces a whisky of deeper wood notes, particularly wood spices (vanilla, sandalwood, perhaps even mint) and floral notes. It's rich, complex, and dry-especially on the finish. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com
First whiffs pick up scents of fresh pineapple, cedar, and paraffin; later sniffings detect subtle notes of baked pear and sweet oak. Palate entry features a firm, moderately oily, and velvety texture; by midpalate, integrated flavors of ripe peach, pear drops and bran delight the taste buds. Finish is extended, semisweet and coconut-like. Replaces the 12-year-old French Oak Finish. Best Buy. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com

- 1998 Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 23 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$1199. 00Bottle$14388.00 DozenABV: 43%
The eighth addition to the Bond House No.1 Collection, Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1998 showcases some of the first 'Morangie ever to be aged in new charred oak barrels. Distilled in 1998, the year Dr Bill Lumsden became Director of Whisky Creation, the 23-year-old limited edition results from one of his earliest experiments. By marrying that experimental whisky’s intense colour and spice with other casks selected for notes of ginger, baked apples and orange chocolate, Dr Bill brings a delectable twist to Glenmorangie’s fruity finesse. 43% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... Ripe pears, plums and baked apples are drizzled with rich toffee sauce. Then comes gentle oak and creamy vanilla, touched by fresh mint leaves and a spiralling scent of incense. A splash of water reveals Glenmorangie’s classic citrus side, light with lemon and mandarin orange. Sweet tobacco is brushed with lavender and a sprinkling of ginger. Zesty, vibrant fruits pop in the mouth, smoothened by chocolate and soft butter candy, scattered with raisins and figs. Then, deliciously hinting at the new charred oak, comes orange chocolate, spiced with clove, ginger, aniseed and sweet chilli. Subtle and mellow. A harmony of sugared almonds, leather and dates.

Glenmorangie The Infinita 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 43%What was the 'Extremely Rare 18 year old' is now titled 'Infinita 18 Year Old', with packaging updated to a vibrant blue gift box with copper accents. The expression is said to be a favourite of Glenmorangie's Director of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden. He says: “For me, Glenmorangie Infinita encapsulates every element of our house style in perfect harmony and is our most deliciously complex creation. There are aromas of honey, vanilla, narcissus and jasmine, and tastes of figs, dates, nuts, gentle spices and more. Fans of Glenmorangie 18 Years Old can rest assured that our wondrous whisky is unchanged. I’m sure they’ll agree that, as its new name suggests, Glenmorangie Infinita is deliciousness without end.” The whisky retains its flavour profile from Glenmorangie's characteristic distillation process and maturation in ex-bourbon and ex-oloroso sherry casks. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... This marriage of bourbon and oloroso sherry casks on Glenmorangie’s revamped 18 year old has created a delightful nose of heather honey, toasted oak, citrus peel, candied ginger, mandarin orange flan, lemon zest, icing sugar, and floral notes. Polished and elegant on the taste buds, with honeyed fruits, peach, mandarin, pepper, clove, and orange cake, with little licks of smoke, sultana, oak, and Olde English marmalade on the lengthy finish. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...extra time has changed things more than a little: The nose is richly earthy and laden with umami notes, almost leathery and vegetal rather than clearly herbal or grassy. A light furniture polish note adds a level of austerity to the experience. The palate at last sweetens things up, its baked apple character mixing with toasted almonds and crushed graham crackers, making for a chewy cobbler experience. A gentle beefiness endures here, some of that rye-driven greenery evoking rosemary and thyme. But watch carefully for a final burst of strawberries on the conclusion, along with a touch of saffron, which perk this rather savory experience up enough to keep things lively. - drinkhacker.com
- Glenmorangie A Tale of the Forest Limited Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$179. 99Bottle$2159.88 DozenABV: 46%
Glenmorangie’s “Tale” series continues a tradition of experimentation that started with the now discontinued Private Editions. The latest to land in Australia is 'A Tale of the Forest' and it's guaranteed to be one of the most novel 'Morangies of recent times. Frankly, we're surprised it made it past the Scotch Whisky Association - the hard-line and somewhat conservative body that enforces Scotch Whisky regulations. It's a malt infused with natural botanicals during kilning, including juniper, birch bark, heather and rowan berries, bringing flavours of peppermint, menthol, eucalyptus, pine, wood sap, angelica, bitter orange and aromatic wood smoke. It’s not entirely unique. Swedish single malt producer, Mackmyra employ juniper branches to dry some of the malt for their 'Svensk Rok' release, which makes sense, as juniper has been used to season food in Sweden for generations. Glenmorangie's Head of Whisky Creation, Bill Lumsden says there's a good reason why no one has done it before in Scotland. “The whole thing was horrendously difficult, but that made it more appealing to me, because anything like this should always be a labor of love.” He adds, “This whisky calls to be tasted outdoors, where people can get their senses awakened by being outside, hopefully in a forest, with some moss-covered boulders and running water, because the sound of running water adds to the mix, igniting your senses.” Replete with botanically themed packaging designed by noted Thai illustrator, Pomme Chan, the whisky was aged in Bourbon barrels (mostly refill casks) and comes bottled at 46% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.
Other reviews... The nose is immediately unique and engaging. It’s a bit smoky, which isn’t something I’ve ever really detected in a Glenmorangie. Not a heavy, peat-fueled smoke, but a thin, sweet campfire smoke that does indeed evoke the forest. That sensation is enhanced by notes of fresh mint, sweet pine sap, and dried berries that eventually give way to more classic Glenmorangie aromas of tinned pear and honeyed malt. The palate is elegant with a subtle oiliness and soft warmth. The smoke carries through here, as well, with bit of toasted fir branch that complements sweeter, brighter notes of juniper and clove. The herbal and resinous elements threaten to turn sharp on the midpalate but instead soften to candied ginger, peppermint, and Christmas cake on a long, silky finish dusted with five spice and pipe smoke. It’s a well-built, if very unusual, whisky, ideal for exploring in the winter season. Although it might appeal more to smokeheads than Highland purists. - drinkhacker.com

Glenmorangie The Cadboll Estate 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Batch 2Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $179.99$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 43%Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
From Glenmorangie's Cadboll Estate range, which is made using single-estate barley, Batch No.2 comes aged for 15 years in x-Bourbon casks. A short drive from the distillery itself, Glenmorangie’s 440-acre Cadboll Estate produces just enough of their own unique strain of barley for no more than two weeks production per year. Time and care goes into making sure the barley is exactly to spec. Dr Bill Lumsden comments, “The Cadboll Estate barley brings an extra creaminess to our delicate, fruity spirit. For those of you who do not live in the Highlands – in other words, most of you – enjoying our Cadboll Estate whisky is the next best thing to being here.”Each batch release reflects the subtle changes in the barley crop. Taste wise, Batch 2 pretty much does what the label says. From the soft, vanilla tea biscuit and waxy orange peel aromatics to the elegant, American oak driven palate that adds dried coconut and wood shavings to the profile, it delivers a whisky in typical 'Morangie style. On the down side, at just 43%, it's neither as intense or well-defined as younger releases like Astar and there is a touch of bitter cocoa combined with a slightly acidic, spirity feel thinning out the finish, also detracting from the length.
Notes from the producers... NOSE: A full and fruity nose with orange and honeyed apricots. Creamy vanilla candy, toasted almonds and a hint of coconut and sugared almonds. With a few drops of water more floral notes of orange blossom, jasmine and heather come to the fore. TASTE: A rich, smooth silky texture is followed by a burst of sweet fruity flavours - poached pear in syrup, apricot and zesty lemon. Ginger & cinnamon spices sizzle and are tempered with a cooling mentholic freshness. FINISH: There is a long lingering finish, with layers of orange oil, toasty oak and eucalyptus.

Glenmorangie The Tribute 16 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $199.99$169. 99Bottle$2039.88 DozenABV: 43%It's no secret that Glenmoragnie's Head of Whisky Creation loves to be creative. Dr. Bill Lumsden began experimenting with adding peated barley to the mix about twenty years ago, but never anticipated sales for the category to explode in the way they have. Indeed, it’s only been in the past few years that Glenmorangie have realised the potential for smokey styles. To ensure this expression doesn’t overwhelm drinkers with its peaty character, fifty percent of the malt is traditional, non-peated Glenmorangie. There’s a little bit of smoke upfront but then it’s very fragrant, more floral, like hay that’s dried out on a farm, cut grass and fresh flowers, even a little bit of milk chocolate. For many tasters, the peat might be almost indiscernible until the last, where it comes across like a soft slather of soot. Otherwise, The Tribute is perhaps best thought of as a ramped-up ten year old - still crisp and elegant, but definitely more mouthfilling and textural, the phenols adding a noticeable oiliness. This is a genuine throwback to the distillery's past that pays tribute to the historic use of a peat fired kiln (yes, many a Highlander used to be peated!) Aged in bourbon casks, like the other three in the series, you get a large format bottled at a slightly higher ABV of 43%. The value is very good.
Other reviews... Lemon pith and lime marmalade on the nose begin a citrus theme that leads into the bright, green fruit driven palate with tangy salinity and elegant peat character. Beautifully refined. 94 points - International Wine & Spirits Competition
...Nose: A charcoal barbeque chock-a-block with tropical fruits. Mango, pineapple and kiwis all grilling away with a sprinkling of coconut flakes, lavender infused rock salt and then some shards of white chocolate. Palate: Waves of tobacco smoke, plasticine and burnt coffee granules join the succulent fruit notes from the nose. Finish: A delightfully waxy element to it and a hint of smoky florals towards the end. Comment: If a box of crayons were fruit flavoured and being stored in a smokehouse. - whiskymag.com
"...Earthy smoky notes and delicate oak tannins are balanced by acacia honey, ripe apple and vanilla, all enlivened by a touch of clove and black pepper spice." 5 stars - diffordsguide.com
"...The Tribute just nicks it for me, given that I haven’t forgotten my love for smoky whiskies. The balance is just right on this for me: a lovely combination of sweetness and smoke." - malt-review.com

Glenmorangie The Elementa 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 43%The Elementa is the second of Glenmorangie's new Travel Retail whiskies released in late 2020, in this case, celebrating the art of wood finishing. Thirteen years in bourbon barrels followed by nine to twelve months in charred virgin American oak casks results in an unusual age statement with sweet, woody depths and a spicy edge that's also creamy with notes of vanilla, lemon peel and crystalised ginger. One litre format. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Nose: Quite gentle at first. Strawberries, dark chocolate and cracked black pepper, just a touch of aged balsamic. Slabs of toffee and rose petals, peanut brittle. Soft as possible wood notes. Oak chests. Palate: Sweet and all that honey comes in. Fruit as well with those strawberries, oak gets a grip. Fizzy sherbet. Treacle tart, jammy with plump blackcurrants. Finish: Long, sweet and honeyed, just a hint of bitter walnut skin to balance it. Ginger prickle eventually. Comment: Fairly well balanced and straight forward too. - whiskymag.com

Glenmorangie A Tale of Winter Limited Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$169. 99Bottle$2039.88 DozenABV: 46%Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
Released in the UK in 2021, 'A Tale Of Winter' is the latest annual limited edition from Glenmorangie to arrive in Australia, coinciding with the approaching Winter season and World Whisky Day (Saturday the 21st of May). Like its predecessor, "A Tale of Cake', this is a concept whisky from the inside out. Bill Lumsden has used 13 year old (plus) x-Bourbon matured single malt and finished it in Sicilian Marsala wine casks. The flavours of Marsala typically hint at apricot, vanilla and brown sugar and range from dry to very sweet. Evidently Lumsden felt these casks were perfectly suited to provide the profile he was looking for. The marketing team have responded with an eye catching knit-sweater-patterned presentation to evoke the feeling of the season. As for the whisky itself, it kind of reminds you of mulled wine or spiced rum. The colour is deeper and the nose heavier and richer than most 'Morangies to date; Festive spices feature, with cinnamon and nutmeg over ginger snaps and hints of orange cake and boiled confectionary. The palate is more full bodied again with a deliberate spice theme: Ginger beer, fruit cake and persistent warming spices ricochet around the drying finish. Ultimately, it's a whisky that achieves exactly what the label suggests - a genuine Winter warmer. Besides sipping straight, Glenmorangie recommend it in a Winter Old Fashioned (recipe below). 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.Other reviews... Rustic and wild on the nose, with barrel char, burnt-rubber smokiness, and raspberry and green banana emerging. Rich, full, and honey-textured on a palate of milk chocolate, almond nuttiness, and spice, with notes of dried leaves and old oak. Dark rather than bright, with the cask influence lending a certain profundity. Spice and tobacco leaf accent a finish of dried dark fruits and more chocolate, with cherry and spice at the end. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, Reviewed by: David Fleming 2022
Notes from Glenmorangie... Curious and slightly sharp, with the classic Marsala top-note of slightly oxidised fruits. Hints of orange toffee intermingles with a fragrant top note of lavender honey and sweet rose. A juicy viscous, but slightly peppery mouthfeel, leads in to a burst of sweet, nutty flavours – coco powder, red pepper, brazil nut toffee and sweet barley malt. Sweet demerara sugar and a long lingering spicy aftertaste of clove, ginger and cinnamon.

Matured for 15 years in ex-bourbon casks, and transferred into Spanish Oloroso casks for a final three years of maturation, the mature aged statement is matched by super-premium presentation.
Tasting note: Pale gold colour. Moderate aromatics offer seamlessly integrated floral scents of sweet, delicately peated(?) cereals, subtle citrus notes (mandarine, grape fruit) followed by a touch of applemint. Concentrated and mouthfilling, the palate is perfectly poised delivering flavours of mandarine peel, grape fruit, toasty oak, vanilla and honey. Long biscuity, orange cake-like aftertaste rounds off a wonderfully fresh 'Morangie expression.43% Alc/Vol.
Other reviews... sharp, eywatering mix of mainly fruit and honeyed barley; nutty and, with the confident vanillas forming a breakfast cereal completeness...Cocoa crispies... The perfect start to the day whisky. 91 points- Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019
This is part of the distiller’s Extremely Rare range, and has been matured in bourbon casks for 15 years, before a third is transferred to oloroso sherry casks for 3 years. Dried fruits, icing sugar, honey, lemon cheesecake, and floral aromas on the nutty nose. The palate offers figs, crème brûlée, cinnamon, more honey, and citrus fruit. The finish sees citrus fruit and oak merge nicely.
89 points- whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Spring 2019)Of course not ‘extremely rare’, but pretty good according to my notes for earlier batches. The price is similar to that of the new NAS, and it’s partly a finishing as well (30% have been finished for three years in oloroso). Colour: pale gold. Nose: cleaner and fresher, more ‘natural’ than the Bacalta, more floral as well, with lovely whiffs of acacia flowers, orange blossom, and simply all-flower honey. Some orange cake, and brioche flavoured with orange blossom water. Mouth: really much brighter and more citrusy than Bacalta, with tangerines, honey, and more ‘oriental’ brioche. Some figs, dried pears and apricots, and then vanilla. Good body at just 43% vol. Finish: medium, honeyed, with dried fruits again and always this citrusy/floral side. Comments: a very easy, approachable, and consensual malt whisky. Really enjoy it. - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

Glenmorangie The Accord 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$139. 99Bottle$1679.88 DozenABV: 43%The youngest in a trio of Travel Retail exclusives, those already familiar with Glenmorangie's 'Lasanta' may find similarities here. While the Lasanta is finished in Oloroso and Pedro Ximinez sherry casks, 'The Accord' is aged in ex-bourbon and finished in Oloroso only. The result is “a punch of richness, depth and spiciness that great sherry whisky should have,” says Brand Ambassador, Brendan McCarron. It's otherwise summed up as a fruity and rich Glenmorangie showcasing Bill Lumsden's expertise in marrying casks. x Bourbon barrels deliver smooth, fruity notes while oloroso sherry adds gentle sweetness and spice. One litre format. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Nose: It’s like someone mixed apple crumble in with Playdoh. There’s then waves of freshly cooked doughnuts with Nutella and mint choc-chip ice cream. Palate: Nutty and rich with toasted walnuts and cinnamon oats to begin with which is slowly followed by poached pears and smoked Applewood. Slight grassy hints of morning dew appear. Finish: A creamy consistency with charred oak notes creating a subtle smokiness. Comment: Every possible food group in a glass. What more could you possibly want?!

Glenmorangie X Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$68. 99Bottle$827.88 DozenABV: 40%This is Glenmorangie's new expression marketed as a made-for-mixing whisky. The story goes that Dr. Bill Lumsden wanted to create a low-cost malt that could challenge the ubiquitous (and massive) blended Scotch market. He approached the problem by vatting standard ex-bourbon Glenmorangie with a portion finished in virgin oak casks, blending it in consultation with top international bartenders. 'X' could well stand for 'Glenmorangie Light'. The aromas are fairly reticent and simple, like a young blend or a single grain; cut grass is followed by hints of over-ripe apple, tea biscuits and vanilla malt. Brisk, accessible and grainy at first; the mid-palate builds with moderate distillery character, while the finish presents a fresher, fruitier side adding citrus, baked apple and spice. It's very laid back and quaffable stuff to enjoy as you might a young blend. Try it in a highball with soda. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... A delicate, paradoxically complex malt which does the simple things to rather lovely, refreshing effect. Surprisingly impressed. 90 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024
Notes from Glenmorangie... A single malt with tantalizing aromas of pear, vanilla and honeysuckle oranges, cueing up a sweet extravaganza of taste, from bursts of crème brûlée to swirls of orange sherbet and chocolate fudge. Made for mixing playful, simple, refreshing drinks.

Glenmorangie The Original 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 40%Glenmorangie Master Distiller, Bill Lumsden, delivers one of the most consistently high-quality portfolios in Scotland. But it’s his ‘entry level’ product, the Glenmorangie 10 Year Old that sets the bar for the rest to follow. Jim Murray is rapturous about this expression declaring it to be “...one of the great single malts” rating it 94 points. Elegant swan-necked stills ( said to be the tallest in Scotland) are claimed to contribute to the lightness of the spirit. Maturation takes place in ex-Bourbon casks, made from oak sourced from Glenmorangie's own section of forest in the Ozark Mountains in Missouri. Our tasting found delicate aromas of creme brulee, pineapple, pear drops, barley sugar, vanilla, cocoa and spice. The palate is medium dry, supremely soft and full of flavour. Vanilla custard, toffee, toasted coconut and cocoa are aided by a softly spiced, malty background. Hints of dried fruit emerge. The balance is very good and there's a lingering aftertaste of vanilla, cocoa and toasted coconut. Put simply, there’s an alluring delicacy and complexity to this whisky that seems to punch above its price point. 40% Alc./Vol.

...Fully matured in bourbon casks and currently at 29.99€ at our nearest Leclerc supermarket. Glenmorangie 10 was one of the seminal malt whiskies here, together with Glenfiddich NAS/8/12. Colour: pale gold. The very embodiment of a fresh, pleasant, fruity malt whisky. Mouth: I find it really very sweet, as if a part of the casks had been recharred/deep-charred. Some light molasses honey, some mirabelle liqueur ripe butter pears, plums… I find it clearly fruitier and less on butterscotch than earlier batches of Glenmo 10. Finish: short/medium, still fresh and fruity, but with more green tea. Green tea with milk, and some vanilla in the aftertaste. The raw materials used to create this whisky are quite unusual and include estate grown Cadboll malt along with chocolate malt (chocolate malt is usually used in the production of beers like porter and stout). The whisky has been matured in new, low toast, Ozark American oak casks and ex-Oloroso sherry casks. It is the brainchild of Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's head distiller who first had the idea over 20 years ago.
Retasted June 2017... Brilliant topaz / beams from the glass. Almost floral notes of cocoa and manuka honey drizzled over hints of orange spice cake and shortbread. Starts understated and fresh but finishes unlike almost any other whisky: A peacock's tail of fantastic length and force with miniature detonations of orange zest, dark chocolate, hazelnut and sweet spice dappling the tongue. The persistence is quite exceptional. Maintains its place as a high point in the Glenmorangie stable. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... It is the pace of the flavour development of the whisky, with it moving from one phase to the next, which is most mesmerising...Glenmorangie is in a very good place right now. 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024
...An innovative offering made with a proportion of chocolate malt and matured in virgin American oak. Some of the component whiskies are between 35 and 40 years old. Milk chocolate, honey, orange marmalade, sultanas, and spice on the inviting nose. The palate is rich and full, with malt, dates, Jaffa oranges, dark chocolate, and coffee beans. Long and spicy in the drying finish. Glenmorangie at its very best. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Spring 2019)
First tasted 2008... Deep orange brown colour with golden hue. Sweet and inviting nose of Mixed Peel, Chocolate, Coffee beans and Almond biscuit. The palate is thick, luscious and mouthfilling, almost creamy. Pronounced flavours of chocolate, coconut, orange, vanilla and hazelnut. The palate shows no sign of spirit heat, even without the addition of water. Outstanding balance. Exceptionally long, supple aftertaste of chocolate, vanilla, almond and hazelnut. Hints of orange emerge then fade. Drink with chocolate or dried fruit desserts, coffee or a cigar. A phenomenal, if unusual whisky. 97 points

1996 Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 23 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $1,499.00$1199. 00Bottle$14388.00 DozenABV: 43%Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
The sixth release in Glenmorangie’s Bond House No. 1 collection was distilled in 1996 and aged in first-fill bourbon casks. Made from oak handpicked from Missouri’s Ozark Mountains, these casks aren’t just any old barrels. Rather, they were created to Glenmorangie's exacting specifications and filled with Bourbon on Glenmorangie’s instructions. The general flavour profile is reportedly similar to Glenmorangie Astar (also matured exclusively in these casks). The wood adds extra creaminess to the malt, only this is much, much older whisky than Astar. In fact, as Dr. Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Director of Distilling & Whisky Creation explains, “ This is the oldest whisky we have ever aged in our bespoke casks... Its fresh, floral aromas and luxuriously creamy tastes are gloriously enhanced by age.”
The Bond House No.1 series consistently rate highly, with the 1991 Awarded Whisky of the Year at the 2019 International Whisky Competition. They're already considered good acquisitions for collectors. If you are looking to add this one to your set, be quick. Very limited stocks.
Notes from Glenmorangie: Color: Bright sunburst gold. Nose: Fresh, floral and perfumed, with hints of roses, carnations, jasmine and a curious herbal note like coriander. Luscious mandarin orange and pear follow, with a beautiful candy sweetness, reminiscent of mixed fruit jellies. A splash of water releases even more floral notes of carnation and geranium, along with some soft, buttery vanilla. Taste: A zesty, citrus mouthfeel leads into a powerful burst of citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, kept under control by the thread of soft, sweet vanilla and fudge. The finesse for a whisky of this age is quite remarkable, with gentle spices, such as ginger and sweet chilli and subtle oaky notes. Finish: Delicate and dancing with almonds, pear and cake mix. 43% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Nose: Weighty and rich: cumin powder, sweet orange peel (and pulp), bitter chocolate torte. Water melts the chocolate and orange together. Palate: Very dense and fungal, suggesting maturity. Lightly smoked with tannins and a citric/marmalade fruitiness. Balanced and complex. Finish: Long, soft and raisined. Comment: Big and powerful but with sufficient character to cope. Another cracker from Rothes. 43% Alc./Vol.Rating: 85

'Another cracker from Rothes'.
Other reviews... The newest expression from the 1990's. Heavier, richer, and more ripe that the 1987 Vintage. It is very creamy and mouth-coating, with layers of sweetness (vanilla, caramel, light toffee, white chocolate), fruit (sultana, plum), along with a good underpinning of oak spice. A very nice effort for a whisky this young. Rating 88

Glenrothes 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 40%"...plenty of sherry-driven citrus up front..Definitely worth the few extra bucks over the 10 year old." - drinkhacker.com
Billed as the classic house style, aged only in Sherry casks, this is the second in the Soleo series devoted to sherry matured expressions ranging from 10 to 25 years of age. Showing more 'breed' compared to the entry level bottling, the 12 year old is also softer and more rounded, offering moderate weight and length. All of the dried fruit, dark chocolate and spice notes you’d expect from a sherried Glenrothes are present, with nothing in excess. It's the ultimate easy-drinking Speysider. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews.... Light berry fruit notes, with resin, walnuts, and icing sugar on the nose. More confident berry notes on the palate, with a hint of cloves, then developing licorice, dark chocolate, and tangerine. The finish is spicy, with aniseed. 40% Alc./Vol.
87 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Summer 2019)...I don’t think this whisky has changed in the last 10 months, and my notes are very similar to my prior review. There’s plenty of sherry-driven citrus up front, followed by a bold almond note, making for a quite nutty expression of Glenrothes. The malt is far more rounded and better integrated into the whole than in the 10 year old, with a much more soothing, lingering, pastoral finish. I’m finding I like it a bit more now than I did then, actually. Definitely worth the few extra bucks over the 10 year old. - drinkhacker.com

Glenrothes Whisky Makers Cut Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $139.99$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 48.8%"...unspoiled Sherry casks at work. An absolute must for Sherry lovers." - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2020
Glenrothes’ owners The Edrington Group are instigating some significant changes at the distillery. An upgrade is scheduled in the coming years and the marketing emphasis has already taken a dramatic shift towards 'ultra premium' bottlings. The ten and twelve-year-olds as well as the Whisky Maker's Cut are all discontinued, at least in Australia, with the range now starting at 18 years. However alternative reports suggest they’ve stopped making them altogether, which is supported by the fact that these products are now archived on the Glenrothes website and listed as sold out at major UK retailers. Whatever the case, knowing the strong following for this distillery, we’ve bought up big and negotiated Australia’s best deals. Opportunity knocks!
In and out of the country over the last few years and at variable pricing, the Whisky Maker's Cut was originally exclusive to an Australian Whisky Club where it sold for $125; elsewhere it's been selling for up to AU$140. We've secured an even better price again with a scoop buy on the last domestic stocks. Matured in first-fill sherry casks, bottled at the Master Distiller's preferred strength and rated 95 points by Jim Murray, this will attract drinkers more than collectors. The aroma wavers to and fro from sweeter notes of fresh prunes, dried apricots and candied orange peel to drier scents of leather handbag, cocoa and light prickles of alcohol. Early oak and baking spice flavours develop before dates and wisps of vanilla. Extra kick from the higher strength adds depth, especially with the spike of intensity at the finish. The final stages turn leaner and spicier, but the balance is good. In short, plenty for Sherry heads to enjoy - and at a very reasonable price. As the undisputed bargain of the Soleo collection, expect it to go fast. 48.8% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... "...a semi-simplistic of happy, dry oloroso dominating... the late sherry trifle, enriched with chocolate sauce is deeply attractive. Unspoiled Sherry casks at work." 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2020
...The nose offers rich fruit—plums and sultanas—with milk chocolate and new leather. The palate is silky and luxurious, with medium-sweet sherry, vanilla, blackcurrants, and treacle. Dark berries and black pepper in the lengthy, mildly oaky finish. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Summer 2019)
No age statement, but a considerably higher abv here. That higher alcohol level really makes the sherry pop on the nose, although I also get a bit of a smoky kick here that I didn’t find in any of the other whiskies. On the palate, that smoky element lingers, giving the body a peppery, beefy note that is slightly at odds with the citrus-driven sherry notes. The beefy, smoky elements continue to reign on the finish, alongside a somewhat green note. - drinkhacker.com

2003 Gordon & Macphail Speymalt from Macallan 20 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$999. 00Bottle$11988.00 DozenABV: 57.7%Gordon & Macphail announced several years ago that their 'Speymalt from Macallan' series will continue to be bottled occasionally, however, they'll only be released in 'selected' worldwide markets. Australia doesn't seem to be one of those, and we suspect the whisky in question was scheduled for the US. Twenty years old, single cask, cask strength and sourced from one of Scotland's most prestigious independents, good things have been said about some of these early 2000 G&M Macallans - no doubt partly because the bottler continues a practice of filling and maturing in their own casks rather than buying 'ready made' malts and then finishing them off for a year or two. This way, G&M maintain as much quality control as is possible for an indie. Judging by the colour alone, this looks to have been very active on the sherry front and has all the hallmarks of a strong distillery expression. Presumably non-chill filtered, but not stated on the label, cask #13603609 yielded 298 bottles at 57.7% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Sweet stewed fruit aromas with cinnamon and ginger spice. The palate has forest fruits, toasted hazelnuts and black pepper. The finish has charred oak and citrus peel.
- 2010 Gordon & Macphail Connoisseurs Choice Caol Ila 12 Year Old Sassicaia Cask Finished Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$260. 00Bottle$3120.00 DozenABV: 45%
From the entry-level to the top end, Caol Ila is invariably included in Gordon & MacPhail's offerings. This particular release seems to be something of a tradition. Part of the Wood Finished sub-series in the Connoisseurs Choice range, after 11 years in refill Bourbon casks it spent one year in some particularly active x-Sassicaia casks (one of Tuscany's most prestigious red wines). It's then bottled without chill-filtration or colouring, culminating in a whisky filled with notes of cured meats, cranberries and spices, with zesty citrus, bonfire embers and the signature smoke of Caol Ila. In July 2023, the final outturn was 3900 bottles at 45% Alc./Vol.
- 2010 Gordon & Macphail Discovery Tomatin Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 43%
The perfect introduction to independent bottler, Gordon & MacPhail’s impressive collection of whiskeys, the Discovery Range comes in three main flavour profiles: sherry, bourbon and smokey. Although Tomatin's production is mainly intended for blends, it's also appreciated as a standalone malt, noted for its delicate, fruity profile (think tropical fruits, green apples and honeydew melon). Filled into barrel in 2010 and entirely matured in first-fill bourbon barrels to highlight its fruity character, this promises a classic, pure Highland expression devoid of embellishment, the oak contributing coconut and light toast. 43% Alc./Vol.
- 1963 Gordon & Macphail Strathisla Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$2499. 00Bottle$29988.00 DozenABV: 40%
Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.
One in a fairly long (and possibly ongoing) line of G&M Strathislas that have been released over the last few decades. It should be noted that we've not received any recent editions, which may indicate stocks are running low at Gordon & Macphail, or that they're reserving their remaining liquid for natural strength single cask expressions. This particular Strathisla was decanted from barrels in 2007, so the tasting notes below are indicative only, however we wouldn't expect dramatic variation between two compositions from the same vintage and bottler. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... [1963/2005 bottling tasted] Colour; amber. Nose: it’s a rather different story. This one starts more on bananas flambéed, coconuts (Malibu) and a beautiful oakiness. Also quite some game, ham, mint sauce (yeah we tried this one in the UK). Gets more similar to the 40yo after a moment but maybe a tad more complex. We have the same kinds of wild mushroom. Mouth: more classic, maybe a little woodier. Dried bananas, crystallised apricots. Loses a little steam with time but never gets weak. Finish: quite long, much spicier than before, getting very peppery. In short, another great old Strathisla, somewhat in the style of an old cognac. Too bad the middle was slightly on the slow side. 89 points - whiskyfun.com
- Gordon & Macphail Discovery Glenrothes 11 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 43%
Sherry matured Glenrothes are always hot items. Gordon & MacPhail have bottled this one as part of their Discovery series, curated to offer a dependable and consistent choice of 'Sherried', 'Smokey' and 'Bourbon' matured malts. 43% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Rich toffee aromas mingle with stewed fruits. Sherry influences mix with forest fruits, delicate cinnamon and chocolate. On the palate, raspberries and blackberries are complemented by cinnamon and charred oak with a creamy milk chocolate and orange finish.
- Gordon & Macphail Discovery Caol Ila 13 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 43%‘Discovery’ is the second range to launch as part of the updated G&M portfolio, with the packaging taking a major leap forward. Designed to help whisky drinkers begin an exploratory journey, the whiskies are grouped and colour-coded under three flavour profiles - ‘Smoky', ‘Sherry’ and ‘Bourbon’. The first expressions to be released include Balblair, Tormore, Miltonduff and Caol Ila, all matured in Gordon & MacPhail’s own hand-selected casks. Citrus and tropical fruit notes are typical from maturation in bourbon barrels. Add Caol Ila's peaty, cured meat notes and you get one genuinely fruity/smokey lipsmacking dram. Notes from the bottlers... Aroma: Sweet and savoury: dry-cured meats glazed with luscious apricot jam combines with rich vanilla notes. Flashes of softly swirling peat smoke complement the delicious sweetness. Taste: Bursting with juicy tropical fruit - pineapple, kiwi, and banana - brushed softly with icing sugar. Light touches of malt and vibrant lemon peel balance the sweetness. Finish: Long and luxurious with hints of sweet marshmallow toasting over gently smouldering bonfire embers. 43% Alc./Vol.

2010 Hazelburn Oloroso Cask Matured 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Campbeltown, SCOTLAND$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 49.9%Collectors note: Springbank's labels almost always arrive with minor wearing and markings, most often to the top of the front labels. This is unavoidable. If you are likely to be disappointed by minor label scuffing, we recommend you don't buy these whiskies.
Although some of Hazelburn's sherry editions can be inconsistent, when you get a good batch you'll find much more depth than what's usually encountered in Hazelburn. Judging by the 13 and 14 year olds, this promises a lovely and perfectly quaffable composition of sherry and Campbeltown character. Drinkers should note the unusual ABV of 49.9% Alc./Vol. Like all Hazelburns, it's triple distilled and made from entirely unpeated, air dried barley. Bottled in November 2022, 9000 bottles were released globally. Collectable.

Hazelburn Online Tasting Week May 2021 15 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Campbeltown, SCOTLAND$799. 00Bottle$9588.00 DozenABV: 54.9%Collectors note: Springbank's labels almost always arrive with minor wearing and markings, most often to the top of the front labels. This is unavoidable. If you are likely to be disappointed by minor label scuffing, we recommend you don't buy these whiskies.
The Online Tasting Week was organised in 2021 and had multiple sessions in lieu of the usual in-person events, presumably due to Covid. Each session included exclusive whiskies from Springbank, Glengyle and Cadenheads. Described by some tasters as "more Springbanky", this cask strength Hazelburn featured in the May 2021 session and was limited to 1174 bottles drawn from fresh oloroso casks. 54.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.
Other reviews... Colour: amber. Nose: a much cleaner sherry when compared to the North Star, but it does have these tiny eggy notes indeed, engine oil, soot, suet, coal smoke, then sweeter notes, cakes, raisins, dried figs, black nougat, pipe tobacco, crude chocolate… This one's certainly the most Springbanky of them three so far. With water: there, game sausages, high grouse, toffee, old red Bourgogne this time again, a little leather, pipe tobacco… Well, it sure is very oloroso-y. Mouth (neat): it's as if someone would have blended the two previous ones, as it's got both the NS's animal dirtiness and the OB's cleaner, more coastal vibrancy (for lack of a better term). Wonderful marmalade, allspice, chocolate, tobacco, a little ginger, mushrooms, a drop of Maggi, lovage, lemons, a little brine… All that while it's gaining fatness too. Big baby. With water: this time it would rather become a little sweeter, but some kind of chalky gingerness is there too, truffle oil (you pour that over any pizza and presto!) roasted chestnuts, earthy tea, roasted black raisins… Finish: very long, with some rancio wine this time. Even touches of PX that, we agree, shouldn't quite be there. The aftertaste is more on salted lemons, rather appropriately. Comments: an excellent so-called sherry monster with a distillate that's having its say too. Rather less meaty/dirty than the NS. 89 points - whiskyfun.com
Whisky and Scotland inseparably intertwined.
Made from the most elemental of ingredients, water and 100% malted barley, Single Malt Whisky has become inextricably woven into the fabric of Scotland's history, culture and customs. Indeed, there are few drinks which are so closely related to the land of their birth than Scotch (even though most distilleries nowadays are not actually owned by the Scots.)
Malt Whiskies, which differ considerably in flavour according to the distillery and region from which they come, tend to have a more pronounced bouquet and flavour than grain-heavy blended whiskies. By definition, malt whiskies are also single distillery, made by the one distiller in the one location. They offer something blends generally don't: a sense of time and place that translates into a one-of-a-kind flavour sensation influenced by the water source, the shape and size of the stills, the type of cask, age and the degree of peating. If you're new to whisky, it's worth reading our Scotch Whisky primer here.
How Single Malt Scotch suddenly became so popular...
90% of the single malt Scotch produced continues to be used to make blended whisky, and the proportion was once much higher than that. Glenfiddich's famous 'Special Reserve Pure Malt' was the whisky that introduced and popularised the bottling of Single Malts to the world. Glen Grant, Macallan and others followed suit and in the 1980s malts started to gain a reputation as a 'more authentic' product than blends. At the same time, the popularity of vodka and other spirits began threatening the market share. In response, blenders dropped their prices. Unfortunately, consumer's perceptions of blended whisky were also lowered. A sense of snobbery developed against the 'cheap' and 'inferior' blends. Unjustified as this was (and remains), it was a sequence of events that helped prepare the way for the current Single Malt boom. So successful has the rise of Single malt been that the industry has found itself in a position of deficit. Older malts are becoming increasingly rare and pricey, partly accounting for the present trend of N.A.S. ('No Age Statement') bottlings and limited edition collector releases.
