1792 Full Proof Single Barrel Select Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Selection
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 62.5%
Tasting note: [20ml sample] Usually people sit on waiting lists for years to do a barrel pick, however WHA were lucky to gain access via a relationship with a local importer. The team traveled to Kentucky in May 2019, tasting their way through several barrels until they found the perfect whiskey. For many, Bourbon is all about good American oak. What you get here reflects something extra. The wood is clearly first class, but there’s layers beyond: Stay with it and you'll find anise, bounty bar, vanilla bean, caramel fudge, sandalwood, hints of rose water and more. It’s also a Bourbon of serious structure and body; completely mouth filling yet proportioned and relaxed at the same time. Sappy oak keeps it taut, but the sustained finish sweeps everything aside in a sensational surge of sugars and high-fidelity, oily, rye-fuelled spice, demonstrating the character you associate with spirits of a rare calibre. If you’re looking to take your experience of Bourbon to another level, get this. Kudos to the team at WHA for making the effort for Australia's (American) whiskey fans. 62.5% Alc./Vol.

1792 Single Barrel Select Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Edition
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 49.3%
Tasting note: Racked in March 2021 as an eight year old, WHA's eighth single barrel release, and their fourth from the multi-award winning Barton 1792 distillery presents a deep topaz / amber colour with lots of wood spice before oily rye and a soothing, cool mint note complimenting the white pepper lift. 3-4 minutes in the glass draws out dried banana, caramel fudge and deep vanillas. Big, chewy and savoury with the sugars reigned in, a balance of grain and oak is achieved - the two reverberate off one another right through to the aftertaste. Mint-laced rye peaks at the finish alongside hints of banana bread, fresh oak, bitter chocolate and tingling spices. Overall, a peppery, slightly drier expression making for an appealing alternative to sweeter Bourbons. (Although not stated on the label, this is barrel #5941, otherwise identifiable by the distillation and bottling dates). 192 bottles for Australia only. 49.3% Alc./Vol.

Named in honour of the year Kentucky joined the United States, Barton 1792 Distillery was established in 1879 and continues today as the oldest fully-operating Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. Situated in heart of bourbon country on 196 acres, the distillery boasts 29 barrel aging warehouses and 22 other buildings including an impressive still house, and the legendary Tom Moore Spring.

Angel's Envy 2017 Release Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $999. 00
    Bottle
    $11988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 62.25%

The Angel’s Envy annual releases commenced in 2012. Each year a number of exceptional barrels are hand selected to be finished in European oak ex-port casks. Angel's Envy 2017 outturn was about 4,000 bottles - in line with previous releases but well down on the 2018 which yielded 12,000 bottles. We have just one to sell.

Chosen casks demonstrate a deep, dark richness, or a “caramelization,”. Usually they’re located towards the hotter top of the warehouse stacks. The finishing period in port casks can be for up to two years before blending and bottling. However as of 2016, the distillery began to pull back on the port finishing, concerned that wine flavours were becoming too strong. Reduced finishing resulted in a more 'bourbon-forward' expression in 2017. Bottled unfiltered at natural strength.

Other reviews... Initially, it’s extremely perfume-like, with floral notes often found in fragrances. Then the fruit completely takes over: banana, blueberry, plums, cherry, apple, pear, and quince. Of these, the banana lingers until chocolate and vanilla enter the picture, followed by hints of green pepper and graham cracker. Then, boom, baking spices launch into a lovely medium to long finish.

    Angel's Envy Rye Whiskey (750ml)

    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%
A very small volume of this sought after American Rye has come our way. Rarely found in Australia. It's super-high rye content combined with up to 18 months finishing in Caribbean rum casks makes it all the more unusual.

Other reviews... The folks at Angel’s Envy once again push the envelope with this 95% rye whiskey finished in Caribbean rum casks. Vibrant, spicy rye notes (cinnamon and mint) are tamed by rich maple syrup, graham cracker crust, nutty toffee, candy floss, subtle tropical fruit, and creamy vanilla. Warm, spicy, rummy finish. This is a mood whiskey—not one I would drink every day—but the flavors marry nicely and the sweetness tames this high-testosterone rye whiskey. Bonus points for uniqueness. Editor's Choice.

Other reviews... This begins with a big scoop of banana pudding, or maybe it’s banana cream pie, since there is a lively dusting of cinnamon and nutmeg. Pretty floral notes, sweet Jordan almonds, and apple candies are well integrated with oak. Balcones Single Barrel #21826 Oloroso Sherry Finish Cask Strength Single Malt American Whisky (700ml) - Australian Exclusive

"Balcones are unquestionably the Masters of big whisky in the USA outside of Kentucky and Tennessee". - Jim Murray

Note: These have anything from superficial label damage to torn labels.

Besides Clear Creek Distillery in Oregon and Stranahan’s in Colorado, the brightest star in the Northern single malt firmament is Balcones. Deeply rooted in Texas climate and charisma, their single malts are bold, full of personality and rich in wood extracted spices. The very best become candidates for Balcone's 'Single Barrel Private Selection Program'. These offer the most complexity, intense palate weight and precocious balance (ABV and barrel type will vary depending on what edition you get). Usually cherry-picked for private sale, we have received cask #21826, an Oloroso finished whisky. The yield was miniscule, even by Texas standards - less than 100 bottles. Despite the cask having being used several times, the sherry influence is significant. It should appeal both to Scotch and Bourbon drinkers alike and is guaranteed to be one of the more short lived releases for 2021.

Keep in mind, this was matured in the very hot and dry Waco weather, so what you get both looks and tastes remarkably mature and complex for its age. The initial nosing finds lots of alcohol, wood and cocoa. It continues to richen and develop over five minutes in the glass adding liquorice bullets, roasted nuts, vanilla malt, dark chocolate and dried apricots to the olfactory range. Others will find still more. Swamped with an intense, dry, nutty Oloroso character and bottled at a formidable proof, this is surprisingly easily approached once passed the initial attack. And to balance the sherry and mid palate astringency, there's a perfect amount of honeyed malt and mocha sweetness at the finish. It just goes on and on, sprinkling the tongue with cinnamon and pepper along the way. While we use the term 'Sherry bomb' sparingly, what we have here is something more again. One of the most incendiary whisky sensations of the year.61.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Barrell Craft Spirits BCS Private Release D332 Single Barrel 13 Year Old Cask Strength Tennessee Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) - Barrel & Batch Selection
    Tennessee, UNITED STATES
    $235. 00
    Bottle
    $2820.00 Dozen
    ABV: 61.3%
Tasting note: This particular barrel was destined for a blend but the crew at BCS tried the liquid and knew that it was just too damn good to change it in any way. Discovered at the very top of a Tennessee rickhouse (we can't disclose which one), this is massive, weighty stuff and not for beginners. Eye watering whiffs of alcohol, shellac and spent barrel blow off revealing vanilla fudge, charry oak, menthol-rub and baking spices. Almost painfully intense, but equally absorbing: Vanillas are laid on in a thick, oily attack; the oaky astringency is salivating. Popcorn and rye dapple the tongue then vaporise. Bittersweet oak kicks in, before rye and corn oils rebound at the finish. Cascades of vanilla and cinnamon through the aftertaste. A Bourbon with brawn and an almost rustic Kentucky character - also reminiscent of Stagg Junior in its uncut, incendiary and over-the-top style. For anyone who thinks they've tried everything Tennessee has to offer. 61.3% Alc./Vol. Selected by Barrel & Batch for Australia only.

Notes from the bottlers... ...It’s big at 122.6 proof but has wonderful aromas of buttered popcorn, burnt orange peel, lemon zest, dried mango and red hots candy. The palate comes in fruity with cherry, orange and mango, followed by maple doughnuts and vanilla. It finishes with a hint of bitter orange and black tea then explodes with cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg.

'Whisky Hunt Australia' exclusive single cask selection.
174 bottles only. Limited to one per customer.

Tasting note: [15ml sample] Whisky Hunt Australia hand picked this MGP seven year old 'Honey Barrel' with a group of passionate rye enthusiasts. Summed up as "an absolute stunner", cask M745 takes the grain to a new level of finesse. It teases with floral-soft, drier styled aromatics of cedar, sandalwood and distant spearmint before deeper, dark rye bread notes emerge, and unfolds with buttered buckwheat pancake and peach, wrapped in soft, sweet tannins, dappled with spikes of rye, pepper, juniper and peppermint lifting the finish. Easily the most polished and distinctive whiskey in the 2020 BCS collection, it's a vibrant, oily textured and deceptively long rye highlighting what curated and careful cask selections can offer. Thanks to the team at WHA for bringing this to Australia's whiskey fans. Also collectable. Distilled in 2013 from 95% rye and 5% malted barley. 174 bottles. “Arguably the best one yet... A true standout of its time." - breakingbourbon.com

The third release for the Kentucky-based independent bottler is a blend of straight bourbons distilled in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana - each aged for a minimum of 15 years. Around 12,000 bottles are available. Breakingbourbon.com called it “arguably the best one yet.” Notes from BCS say to expect an ephemeral bouquet shifting between heady minerals, tart fruits, woodsy spices and rich nutty notes with a delicacy that belies the explosion of oak on the palate. Water brings out a creaminess which transforms the nose into a lush and tropical experience reminiscent of a hazy IPA. Extremely limited stocks. 52.45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... I’m shocked by it defying my expectations and overly impressed by its complexity. I was not expecting this, as few bourbons manage this elegance. A beautiful marriage of restrained sweetness, mellowed oak, and balanced heat. A true standout of its time.- breakingbourbon.com

    4.3 / 5 - distiller.com

A finely honed assemblage of Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, New York, Texas and Illinois straight Bourbons is a combination that's never existed in the history of American whiskey - until now. It's one reason why the Barrell Craft Spirits project is one of the most interesting things happening in Kentucky today. The second is a quality of output that continues to take whiskey lovers by surprise: Breakingbourbon.com ranked their 15 year old Bourbon as on of the top releases for 2020. An earlier batch took out Best in Category at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, meanwhile 'Dovetail Whiskey' was awarded the “Chairman’s Trophy” and topped the scores at (97/100) in its category. Whisky Advocate are impressed, while Forbes Magazine's drinks authority, Fred Minnick ranked them among the best of 2018. If you need further testimony, BCS revenue is up from $300,000 in 2014 to around $8.5 million in 2019 - an unlikely achievement for any company selling second rate spirits.

Rather than focus on distillation, BCS have mastered the craft of sourcing and blending. Founder Joe Beatrice and Master Distiller Tripp Stimpson (nine years with Brown-Forman) are based out of Louisville Kentucky, working in the heart of Bourbon country since 2013. Dubbed the "Lone Ranger of the bourbon industry", Beatrice explains “We let the barrels speak to us. We find thematic tastes and pair based on what we want in that moment. If we taste chocolate in a barrel and really like it, we select barrels to amplify that note.”

Purists will appreciate their transparency in contrast to the usual NDP (non-distiller-producer) model. Ingredients can arrive from anywhere in the world, via different distillation methods, barrels and aging environments. As one of the first true independent American bottlers, these are guaranteed to be some of most distinctive premium limited releases of the American whiskey year. Australia represents their first foray into an export market. This offer includes a small allocation of Whiskey Hunt Australia's collectable single barrel selection "The Drunken Bumblebee", and several small batch Caribbean rums.

...Look for big, bold, concentrated caramel on the nose and palate. The complex flavor extends toffee, dusty cocoa and orange peel into the super-long and clove-accented finish. Add water to taste on this sipping Bourbon, but go easy on the dilution to reward yourself with the smooth orange and caramel. Before you realize, the glass is empty.

...Sweet and rich, with a mouth-coating velvety texture. Deeper and more polished than its younger NAS sibling (see below). Caramel, cocoa powder, lush orchard fruit, kiwi, Seville orange, fig, and honeyed vanilla, balanced by drying oak. Distinctive in character. Best after a hearty meal.

A label that debuted in 2015, paying homage to one of Bourbon's lost brands. It's produced by Michter's. They don't declare the age and mash bill, but it's likely above ten years old. There are multiple batches released simultaneously, once per year, and each batch is made up of around 1000-3000 bottles, so that's roughly equivalent to Michter's own label releases. A fraction has been imported to Australia with 1234 bottles representing the current batch. It should be noted that what we actually receive may vary without notice, so those numbers can't be relied upon. 54% Alc.Vol.

Other reviews... Bomberger’s has once again nailed the landing with this year’s release...  If you like the rich, oaky tastes of Knob Creek Single Barrel (especially the ones that were 13-15 years old) but without the nutty tastes, this one is for you.  If you like Russell’s Reserve Single Barrels because of the manageable proof and complimentary spice, this one is for you.  If you like Old Forester 1920, 1910 or Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, you’ll find many of the similar oak and spice-forward flavors here as well.  This year’s Bomberger’s stays more-or-less on the same level as last year’s release in terms of how good it is.  The main difference between the two seems to be the large amount of chocolate notes that could be found.  This is something that I think anyone would enjoy and makes this a top-notch bourbon.  Michter’s seems to really pour their heart and soul into this bottle yet I still have this feeling that it is undervalued among enthusiasts.  Please note, I’m not saying it’s undervalued on the secondary market so please don’t raise the value of this anymore, taters! - thebourbonculture.com

Production volumes are well down on this year's Bomberger's release, with the 2020 yielding just under one thousand bottles. (Previous releases have been as high as 3000). Meanwhile, the proportion matured in Chinquapin oak has been increased.

Debuting in 2015, it's a fairly new product from Michter's honoring their past in Pennsylvania while paying homage to one of Bourbon's lost brands. The Bomberger's legacy can be traced back to 1753, when two Swiss Mennonite farmers began distilling rye on their farm near Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The distillery was passed down through relatives until 1860 when it was purchased (and subsequently renamed) by Pennsylvania Dutchman, Adam Bomberger. He owned and operated the distillery until Prohibition forced its closing in 1919. Lou Forman who followed, abandoned the original Pennsylvania operation in the 1950s after filing for bankruptcy. In the 1990s, two entrepreneurs filed for the Michter’s trademark and relocated the brand in Louisville, Kentucky.

Until Prohibition, Bomberger's was the oldest operating distillery in the United States, and in many ways represented the transformation of whiskey distilling from an agricultural level to an industrial one. While the age and mash bill of the Bomberger release is unknown, speculation puts it above 10 years old.
It's been described as "...one of the more intriguing releases from Michter's thus far." 955 bottles. 54% Alc./Vol.

A Booker's collectable, probably released circa 2010. Like other Booker's, you can expect a relatively high-rye Bourbon with the mash bill typically around 77% corn, 13% rye and 10% malted barley. Apart from the consistently high quality, the fact that you can actually source these and afford to buy them (unlike Pappy's et al) makes them all the more desirable.

If you've already had the pleasure of tasting Thomas Handy, Van Winkle Family Reserve and Sazerac 18 and are looking for a new rye sensation, here it is. Aged for 13 years, one month and twelve days, this limited edition Bookers has received rave reviews from the likes of Jim Murray, declaring, "If this is not world whisky of the year for 2017, it will be only fragments of molecules away." Rating it a whopping 97.5 points Murray added, "for a big well matured rye it simply doesn't come better than this...brain draining and mind blowing..."

Other reviews... Is this perfect? From the look and nose, yes. Rich caramel and campfire smoke early on; it’s robust, but balanced. Crème brûlée with a sultry smokiness, raw honey with a dusting of nutmeg and a Scotch ale malt profile that’s creamy and mouth-coating. Alas, a heavy bite hides much, needing water to open up. A drop adds complexity, spice, vanilla, chocolate, and licorice.

Indie bottlings from the US usually offer something special. This selection (rumoured to be a George Dickel) from UK's Cadenheads was drawn from two barrels yielding 282 bottles. Their tasting notes describe aromas and flavours of "Smokey oak, maple syrup, thick treacle, lots of vanilla, cigar box and honeycombe sweets with more wood smoke and nougat coming through at the finish". Why do we think it's a Dickel? The clue is in the spelling of 'whisky'. Where JD include the 'e', Dickel do not.

Other reviews… Good, let’s be an a****le for a minute. They state ‘bourbon’ as the wood type, but can it be bourbon since they’re only allowed to fill new oak? Can some bourbon (including Tennessee) be ex-bourbon? Good, stupid moment over… Oh and yes this is Dickel. Colour: amber. Nose: almost luxurious, extremely soft and caramelly, full of popcorn and gingerbread, maize syrup, Cointreau, praline and nougat, then dried coconut, which might be a tad excessive. Mouth: very easy and soft, sweet, on coconut balls, vanilla, preserved apricots, candyfloss and white chocolate. Tends to go towards café latte too. Drops of Cointreau once again, sweet rye bread, then cocoa powder. Finish: rather long, pleasantly dry. Some marmalade and a touch of lavender and caraway in the aftertaste. Comments: very good too. Rather fascinating to be able to compare these babies, thank you Cadenhead! Am I getting American? PS: looks like once a barrel's left the US, you could indeed do whatever you like with it, including finish it in Port (!) while keeping naming it Bourbon or even Kentucky straight Bourbon, as for example Angel's Envy just did. This is an older presentation of the Calumet Farm bottled at an age statement that is no longer part of the portfolio. William Monroe Wright established Calumet Farm in 1924 on a small farm in Lexington, Kentucky. After Wright’s death in 1933 his son Warren began to move the farm’s business toward Thoroughbred racing. After developing the farm’s stock and pedigree for a short time the Wrights hire famed horse trainer Ben A. Jones. Through dedication passion and hard work the farm began an unparalleled ascent eventually topping the horse racing world. This rise to glory would cement Calumet Farm as one of the most dominant names in horse racing history... and now, Bourbon! 47% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Grainy and floral on the nose, with aromas of bananas Foster, pine resin, cardamom, lemon, iced tea, tart blackberries, and nougat. Kicky black pepper and cinnamon smooth out with a touch of water, yielding banana Popsicle, lemon bars, roasted pistachios, and cigar wrapper. A short finish with toasted oak, pecans, and nougat. 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Susannah Skiver Barton 2019

Originally established in 1856 in Paris, Kentucky, Chicken Cock is one of the oldest brands in Bourbon history. The original whiskey rose in popularity during the 19th century and was infamously a staple of Prohibition-era speakeasies, where it would be smuggled inside in nondescript tin cans. The label disappeared from the market in the 1950s after the original distillery burned down, but was resurrected in 2013 as a "sourced whiskey". The new Chicken Cock is based on a 'non-standard' mash bill from MGP in Indiana of 70% Corn, 21% Rye and 9% Malted Barley. Thirty barrels were selected. Most will buy this for the name and the handsome replica pre-prohibition bottle, however the whiskey itself has received favourable reviews.

Bright amber color. Aromas and flavors of cherry syrup, cola and coconut, vanilla frosting, and polished fine furniture with a velvety, vibrant, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a warming, interesting, crisp cherry pop tart and blueberry candy, fresh herbs, orange flower water, and toffee and aniseed finish. Rye has experienced a strong resurgence in the American whiskey landscape. This small batch, bottled-in-bond 100 proof straight rye pays tribute to the former distillery owner. According to producers, Buffalo Trace, it is “An altogether different recipe and profile than Sazerac Rye, containing just rye and malted barley, no corn. The result is an aroma full of dried fruit, black pepper, and touch of fresh dill.”

Other reviews... Very different than other straight rye whiskeys you might be familiar with: there's no corn in the recipe, just a large percentage of rye and a small amount of malted barley. It's youthful, with spice as the defining character (cinnamon, mint, allspice, freshly ground pepper), balanced by blackberry preserve, caramel, butterscotch, and a hint of cotton candy. Lingering dried spice and polished oak on the finish provide balance to the sweeter notes. 50% Alc./Vol. 85 points

If you collect Michter's or Van Winkles, then this super premium release from the acclaimed Sazerac Company should get your attention. Eagle Rare's twenty year old bourbon, named after America’s national emblem, matures twice as long as the standard Eagle Rare and is aged on the lower floors of Buffalo Trace’s historic Frankfort warehouses, reducing evaporation rates. It comes bottled at 101 proof, a nod, the distillery says, to the original proof of Eagle Rare when it was first released in 1975. At the time of writing, no independent reviews are available, however there is a caveat in BT's own notes stating “it's like nothing you’ve ever tasted.” One can imagine that the stunning presentation bears some correspondence with the quality of the liquid inside. The heavyweight decanter is a high-point for American whiskey, featuring two beautifully-sculpted crystal glass eagles - one inside the bottle and the other outside (used as a stopper). The decanter comes housed in a luxurious box covered in a silver 'feather' pattern with sliding doors. Once opened, they trigger two spotlights installed above and below the decanter. Needless to say, very few bottles are produced, with annual outturns ranging from 200-500 bottles, depending on the release date. An individually-numbered letter of authenticity is included with each bottle. 50.5% Alc./Vol. Collectable.

Other reviews... This year’s Eagle Rare 17 Year delivers an intriguing fruit-forward sip that is ultimately hampered by its overreaching dry finish. This year’s Eagle Rare 17 Year brings the age closer to its namesake and comes in at just 5 months over its 17 year moniker. Compare this with the 2021 release that came in over a year older at 18 years and 6 months. It remains the only bottle in the Antique Collection that comes close to a more traditional classic bourbon flavor profile due in part to its manageable 101 proof and rye as the secondary grain in the mashbill. While the overall sip contains lots of classic bourbon scents and flavors, its focus on fruits is its most intriguing aspect. These fruits become readily apparent as the nose is dominated by noticeable baked cinnamon apples. Its crisp aromas make you perk up and prepare you for what the remainder of the sip offers. Moving into the palate, these cinnamon apples are still noticeable, but no longer the center of attention. Instead, they’re joined with equal amounts of classic flavors along with a touch of dark fruit which adds nice contrast. It’s the finish where the more than 17 years this bourbon spent in barrels is most noticeable. Its dry, chewy oak and leather border on being a tad too much, but never quite cross the line into being too dry. Overall, it’s a nice showing for Eagle Rare 17 Year. While it’s definitely not the most dynamic sip in the 2022 Antique Collection and the finish is pushing the limits of enjoyable dryness, in the end it will surely please those who are looking for a manageable sip that focuses on classic flavors. - breakingbourbon.com

A delightful mélange of flavors on the nose—new leather, orange peel, angel food cake, orange Creamsicle, cooked peaches, sweetened ice tea, dark chocolate, nutmeg, and allspice. A well-structured, full-bodied palate starts with earthy notes of warehouse and then lets fly with flavors of blackberry tart, nutmeg, pepper, and semi-sweet chocolate. A lighter but superbly balanced finish adds more dark chocolate, roasted pecans, cherry, tobacco, pepper, and beautifully integrated oak. 50.5% Alc./Vol. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: David Fleming (Winter 2020)

...This year’s release of Eagle Rare 17 Year again sees 101 proof and ups the ante by carrying an 18 year old age statement as evidenced by the Fact Sheet from Buffalo Trace that accompanies the release. 18 years in oak can be tricky, as this much time aging can often leave a bourbon dominated by more oaky and earthy flavors. While aged oak is ever present throughout the sip and earthy flavors specifically in the finish remind you of Eagle Rare 17 Year's age, the bourbon is also full of wonderful nuanced flavors. The nose brings forth a complexity that reveals its layered nuances as you spend more time with it, while the palate delivers a great mix of dark fruits and sweet baking flavors that intertwine nicely together. All of this taken together delivers a well rounded sip on par with Eagle Rare 17 Year pours in recent memory. - breakingbourbon.com

High-aged bourbons are commanding big dollars nowadays. EC 21 is reported to be one of the best. Like others in this series, for such old bourbon, it’s not overpowered by wood. This release was from barrel #70, so the reviews below are indicative only. 45% Alc./Vol.

Soothing in nature, with layers of sweetness (honey, vanilla cream, caramel, nougat), lively complex fruit (coconut, pineapple, ripe peach, honeydew melon), and gentle cinnamon. Soft, creamy finish. This 9 year old was drawn from barrel #6284680, Rickhouse MM on Floor 4. Tasted against Bourbon Brother's 8 year old 'sister' selection, the differences weren't dramatic, however, just one year is enough to make a noticeable change in the warm Kentucky climate. In this example, the flavours are more oak driven and there's a little more astringency and pepper kick on the palate. If you're new to Bourbon, that spiciness means it's not quite as approachable as the eight, but nothing that couldn't be settled by a few drops of water. Splitting hairs, this is the slightly drier, spicier number, with the vanillas curbed until the finish. It also benefits from air contact. When considered side by side, the two barrels make for an interesting tasting. 47% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the importers... Nose: Brown sugar, toasted oats, copper tinge and vanilla. Palate: Splash of oily richness that warms up brown sugar, baking spice, cardamom, vanilla, oak and all spice. Finish: Long finish with a lingering note of peppercorn and macadamias.

The standard release Elijah Craig Small Batch is always a solid pour and well-priced. Single barrel picks, ranging in age from 8 to 12 years old can be quite different from one to the next, one leaning more into oak and another into caramel and spice. They also tend to evolve in the bottle after opening, sometimes even radically, but always maintaining a dependable trifecta of oak, caramel and baking spices. This 8 year old was drawn from barrel #6670891, Rickhouse P, Floor 3. Our tasting revealed resin, low key vanillas, oak shavings, glace cherries and peachy fruitiness on the nose, with a medium-bodied cinnamon and pepper laced palate that suggests fresh oak and roasted nuts, richening up with hints of cocoa, caramel and vanilla malt through the finish. It tastes its age, and at 47% is supple enough to enjoy straight or just over ice. The outturn isn't stated, but we expect less than a couple of hundred have been bought into Australia. Our thanks to Heaven Hill and the Bourbon Brothers for sharing these beauties. 47% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the importers... Nose: Toasted almond, graham flower, hazelnut, pine sap, fresh green apple, pomelo, honeycomb, red cherry, oregano, char. Palate: Maple syrup, marshmallow, whipped cream, toasted oak, pumpkin pie, vanilla, clove, pecans. Finish: Long finish with notes of pink peppercorn and toasted honey cashews.

"Arguably the best Barrel Proof release to date". - drinkhacker.com

Fans of full-proof, super-charged Kentucky styles will be keen to get their hands on this. Although there's too little to justify opening a bottle to review, Batch A120 is by several reports a phenomenal follow up to the acclaimed A119, but even more skewed towards palates that can handle the heat. If you loved A119 and agree it's is the way Bourbon ought to be bottled, you'll find this batch equally satisfying. The proof is marginally higher again. The critics are also closely aligned (it gets the same 94 point rating as A119 from whiskyadvocate, which is most people's 96+).

Made from a mash bill of 78% corn, 12% malted barley and 10% rye and designed to showcase the variety and complexity of Heaven Hill's finest stocks, for those new to the Barrel Proof series, three batches have been offered every year since 2013. Each is identified with a code in the form XMYY, where X is A, B, or C to designate the first, second, and third batches, respectively. M is the month and YY is the year. Thus, A120 was the first batch of 2020 released in January. As always, uncut, straight from the barrel, non-chill filtered and hoarded by collectors, the quantities imported remain negligible. There's no guarantee on future shipments. Winners will be need to be quick on the draw. Limited to one bottle per customer. 68.3% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... An herbal nose featuring menthol, eucalyptus, and horehound is endowed with plenty of earthy oak, evoking sawmill, empty wine casks, and dusty floorboards. Generous oak courses through the palate, the drying tannins reining in the dense sweetness as the whiskey brandishes bold spices, including allspice, pepper, and clove. Water gives this bourbon much needed room to run, revealing greater polish and rich layers of flavor. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com - reviewed by: Jeffery Lindenmuth 2020

...Spoiler alert: A120 is going to be one of the more coveted expressions in this collection. While some of the ECBP releases can sometimes be overwhelming on the wood front, A120 finds a unique sense of balance. On the nose, there’s plenty of (at over 68% abv) heat here, but it masks a note of fresh-cut lumber that pairs deftly with spearmint, cherry pits, and smoky coal fire. It’s a blazer on the tongue, but incredibly expressive with counterbalancing notes of butterscotch and red pepper, raspberry and spice. Surprisingly approachable at full proof, water is a clear benefit, but only a couple of drops. This really brings out the fruity notes in the whiskey, along with a milk chocolate note that lingers on the finish. I had a hard time balancing the water here, as even a few drops too much will water the whiskey down too far. All told, it’s arguably the best Barrel Proof release to date. - Christopher Null, drinkhacker.com

....The first 2020 batch of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof delivers all the classic flavors you’ve come to expect. Rich in okay and sweeter sugary flavors, Batch A120 delivers a well rounded but fiery sip. The proof shines through, especially in the long lingering heat that develops in the finish. It’s not the best showing for the brand, however it’s also far from the worst and should please most Elijah Craig and high proof bourbon fans alike. - breakingbourbon.com

Unanimous praise as one of the great batches in the Barrel Proof series. Strictly limited to one bottle per customer.

A non chill filtered release with previous editions garnering considerable praise from Bourbon enthusiasts, including No.1 in Whisky Advocate's 2017 Top 20. This particular batch left Jim Murray impressed. In fact, it was one of the highest rating Bourbons in his 2021 Whisky Bible. Sheer chance led us to discover and import a tiny quantity for Australia. While it's not the most sophisticated Kentuckian of recent years, it is one of the most emphatic: The aroma packs a punch with a straight-from-the-barrel whiff of nose prickling, penetrating alcohol; Shellac develops into vanilla bean and fresh sawn oak with cinnamon and toasted coconut in support. The entry is creamy, vanilla-heavy; mid palate is dense and chewy, though surprisingly approachable until the atomic ABV explodes in a mouth-coating, mouth-tingling wave of oaky sugars and booming spices. Layers of orange zest, cocoa, caramel and vanilla are left in the wake. Whew! If you're looking for a whiskey to separate the men from the boys, this is your bottle. Batch A119. 67.6% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... When you get this degree of toastiness from a Bourbon, either there has been one hell of an average temperature rise in Kentucky. Or this has been plucked from near the top of a warehouse where it has been cooking happily for over a decade. The result is a Bourbon that takes no prisoners. It is also a fascinating bourbon, not just because of the intensity of the blood oranges on the nose or the prickle of the splinters on the palate. But it is because it shows an inordinate degree of copper in the flavour profile, the mid-point to the finish in particular. It is as though something was just done to the still, maybe some repair work, just prior to this being distilled. And that to the blindingly busy small grain input and the result is a bourbon of cor blimey richness!

[previous batch] As bourbon matures in new charred oak barrels over time, it approaches a perilous point when the oak dominates the flavor. To sip Elijah Craig at 12 years of age—at full barrel proof, without dilution or filtering—is to taste bourbon at its apex, so dangerously close to going over the crest of the hill, yet delivering a massive mouthful of incredibly robust flavors that drape leathery oak over a gooey caramel core, sprinkled with baking spice, while candied nuts and tobacco leaf notes appear on a drying finish dusted with cocoa. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Whisky Advocate's American Whiskey award winner for 2012.

Long time followers of whisk(e)y related news may recall the Elijah Craig 20YO being Whisky Advocate's American Whiskey award winner for 2012. Subsequent accolades confirm Heaven Hill's reputation for big age statements, which must be partly down to a seemingly infinite amount of aged stocks. A Bourbon boom over the last few decades means the reality is a little different. Those stocks are becoming increasingly reduced.

The varying nature of single barrels means their identification is important. The title ‘Best American Whiskey’ is bound to sway some buying decisions - especially when it comes from a reputable source like Whisky Advocate. However, it would be inaccurate to promote all barrels as equals. This bottling is from barrel #42. The front label states: “drawn from the same lot as Whisky Advocate’s American Whisky of the Year”, which implies that it hails from the same distillation run. The barrel reviewed by Malt Advocate was a 2011 release numbered 3735, and was only sold via Heaven Hill’s Bourbon Heritage Centre in Bardstown, Kentucky. The good news is, considering past form, it would be hard to imagine this single barrel to be anything short of brilliant. John Hansell provides a reassuring statement from a February 2nd, 2012 entry, "If there is one thing Heaven Hill has proven on numerous occasions, it’s that they know how to cherry-pick great whiskeys for their single barrel bottlings." 45% Alc../Vol.

Other reviews... From one barrel, and only sold in one location, but well worth the effort to procure a bottle. Other reviews... This seems older than its 23 years. Then a light shone in my soul and it occurred to me. Hang on...I have wines going back to last century. For the older ones do I not allow them to breathe? So I let the whisky breathe. And behold, it rose from the dead...this Methuselah of a whisky had come alive once more...and how! 94 points 53.5% Alc./Vol.

Produced at Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. circa 1975, this looks like it belongs on a movie set from a '70s western. We have one only to sell. There's some scuffing and cellar bloom to the label which makes the bottle look all the more authentic. Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 49.5%
An old Ezra B with an increasingly rare age statement. Quite collectable. One only.

Other reviews... [Batch 10 tasted] Amber-walnut color. Deep, mature aromas of wood spices, mint, molasses, and dark, candied fruit. Thick and mouth coating. Flavors of molasses, mint, leather, dark fruit, leading to a very long, very dry wood and spice finish. The oldest of the Ezra Brooks line, and a very mature expression. Some might find this whiskey a little too woody and dry. Otherwise, there's plenty of character and complexity to entertain the palate. 49.5% Alc./Vol.

Ezra Brooks Bourbon is distilled at Heaven Hill Distillery but the label is owned by the Luxco Spirits Company, whose more well known brands in Australia include 'Rebel Yell'. The portfolio is considered a value buy in Bourbon circles and is a genuine sour mash; aged naturally in new charred white oak barrels and charcoal filtered. Numerous bottlings are presently available on the American market.

    $550. 00
    Bottle
    $6600.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54.2%
Talked about as one of Four Rose's best bottlings of recent times, this 11 year old is based on their OESF recipe, being a mash bill of 20% rye with a more herbal tasting yeast strand. Only 7122 bottles have been released. The bottle includes a toast from Four Roses Year of the Toast contest to celebrate Four Roses 125th anniversary. The winning toast by Frank Wheatley of Louisville is: “If I could age like bourbon, I wouldn’t mind getting old." Non chill filtered. 54.2% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Aged 11 years, this year’s single barrel release is a lively mix of caramel and bright, zingy orange on palate entry. Cinnamon, vanilla, and mint emerge mid-palate, leading to polished oak, baked apple, and a hint of leather on the finish. A lively bourbon, with crisp, clean flavors and nicely balanced. Another winner from Four Roses. 95 points

The 2014 Four Roses Small Batch is technically a 9-year-old whiskey, but with material up to 13 years of age. Drawn from selected barrels as follows (the four letters refer to particular mash bills) OBSV at 13 years, OESV at 12 years, OBSF at 11 years, and OBSK at 9 years, 12,516 bottles were released. We've managed to snag a miniscule quantity for collectors and Four Roses completionists.

Other reviews... Crisp clove, cool mint, cinnamon, and cocoa mingle with glazed orange, honeyed vanilla, caramel, and maple syrup. Polished oak and leather on the finish balance the sweet, fruity notes. More oak and dried spice when compared to the 2013 release (our American Whiskey of the Year) and, while not quite reaching that caliber (it’s not quite as seamless, drinkable, or complex), it gets close. Very impressive.

    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $899. 00
    Bottle
    $10788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54.2%
A September 2018 release to celebrate the brand's 130th anniversary.
These limited bottlings have become sought-after by Bourbon enthusiasts, not just for their rarity (batches max at around 14,000 bottles) but for their reputation for exceptional quality. Four Roses is the only Bourbon distillery that combines two mash bills with five proprietary yeast strains to produce ten distinct Bourbon recipes, each with its own unique characteristics. The 2018 features a 10-year-old Bourbon from the OBSV recipe, a 13-year-old OBSF, a 14-year-old OESV and a 16-year-old OESK.
Earlier bottlings have received rave reviews.

“For this Limited Edition Small Batch, I wanted to create something very special to celebrate the 130th anniversary of our brand,” said Four Roses Master Distiller Brent Elliott. “From the beginning of the process, I focused on building around the unique fruit flavors in our F and V yeast strains, and these flavors shine through in the finished product. As a contrast, I also included a spicy, older batch. By mingling these different flavor profiles, I think we achieved a wonderfully balanced, complex and unique Bourbon. I could not be happier with the result and can’t wait for you to taste it.” 54.2% Alc./Vol. Extremely limited stocks.

Extremely limited stocks of this very rare 13 Year Old, non chill filtered Four Roses. Just 6559 bottles were released world wide.

Other reviews... Thirteen years old, but it shows its age nicely. It’s peppered with complex dried spice notes (mint, cinnamon, ginger, vanilla), yet it also has interwoven sweet notes (maple syrup, caramel, honey) to keep the whiskey from being too dry. Hints of dark chocolate and berried fruit add complexity. Dry, spicy, tobacco, and leather-tinged finish. Great complexity! 62.9% Alc./Vol. 92 points
