If you collect Michter's or Van Winkles, then this super premium release from the acclaimed Sazerac Company should get your attention. Eagle Rare's twenty year old bourbon, named after America’s national emblem, matures twice as long as the standard Eagle Rare and is aged on the lower floors of Buffalo Trace’s historic Frankfort warehouses, reducing evaporation rates. It comes bottled at 101 proof, a nod, the distillery says, to the original proof of Eagle Rare when it was first released in 1975. At the time of writing, no independent reviews are available, however there is a caveat in BT's own notes stating “it's like nothing you’ve ever tasted.” One can imagine that the stunning presentation bears some correspondence with the quality of the liquid inside. The heavyweight decanter is a high-point for American whiskey, featuring two beautifully-sculpted crystal glass eagles - one inside the bottle and the other outside (used as a stopper). The decanter comes housed in a luxurious box covered in a silver 'feather' pattern with sliding doors. Once opened, they trigger two spotlights installed above and below the decanter. Needless to say, very few bottles are produced, with annual outturns ranging from 200-500 bottles, depending on the release date. An individually-numbered letter of authenticity is included with each bottle. 50.5% Alc./Vol. Collectable.
