1800 is a 100% Agave Tequila. To understand how this distinguishes it from other Tequila, it is necessary to know something of the process by which tequila is produced. Although Mexico is famed as the land of the cactus, Tequila is in fact distilled from the fermented juice of the Agave Plant, (not a cactus) otherwise known as the ‘Century plant.’ The Agave plant resembles an unripe, oversized pineapple or spiked cactus which shoots a giant blossom that can take up to twelve years to produce. At maturity, it stands about 5 feet high, is bluish green in colour and has a heart or ‘pina’ . It is these hearts which are actually used in the distillation process, the sweet juice extracted by compression, steaming and washing prior to fermentation & distillation.

The fermentation stage determines whether the final product will be 100 percent agave or mixed ("mixto"). The highest-quality Tequila is made using only fermented agave juice mixed with some water. Mixto however, is made by fermenting and then distilling a mix of agave juice and other sugars, usually cane sugar with water. Mixtos made and bottled in Mexico can contain up to 40% alcohol derived from other sugars. Mixtos that have been shipped in bulk for bottling overseas may have the agave content further reduced to 51% by the foreign bottler. Mexican law states that all 100% agave or aged Tequila must be bottled in Mexico. 100 percent agave Tequilas are clearly labelled as such. Anything else is classified as a Mixto Tequila, however the term is seldom used on bottle labels.

1800 is today the number one selling aged super premium tequila in America. Rested in French oak casks to create a distinctive smoothness, it boasts an exceptional mellowness making it the ultimate shot.

Other reviews... The first whiffs reveal plump, toffee-caramel notes underpinned by an asparagus-like agave aroma; aeration unearths nuances of fennel, white pepper, sage and rosemary—a complex and engaging bouquet. Palate entry is vegetal, green and off-dry; at midpalate the flavor profile turns sweet and sour, fruity and oaky. Concludes on a bittersweet note that somehow closes the circle on the journey. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com

In May 2021, the famous model, Kendall Jenner announced the launch of her 818 Tequila range via an Instagram post. She became the latest celebrity to launch a spirits brand, joining the likes of George Clooney and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Like most tequila brands, the range includes three variants; a Blanco, Reposado and a top-of-the-line Anejo, all bottled at 40%. They're produced in a traditional manner under contract at La Cofradia distillery in Jalisco, home to over sixty tequila labels. Jenner's foray has been polarising, both in terms of the liquid in the bottles and accusations that her wealth means she's diverting attention and resources from smaller producers who lack her pull. The tequila itself is produced from Blue Weber agaves harvested at peak maturity (seven years) then cooked in brick ovens for 40 hours, before being subjected to the tahona extraction method - a large stone wheel that crushes the agave. Taste-wise, the consensus is these are light, approachable styles that don't make heavy demands on drinker's palates. The Anejo was aged for over one year in oak barrels.

    ABV: 40%

Calle 23 is the brainchild of French Bio-chemist Sophie Decobecq. Her expertise in her studied field has lead her to experiment with various yeast strains, in turn creating a range of distinguishable tequilas. Agave is grown and produced in Zapotlanejo, the highlands of Jalisco where they are slowly cooked in stainless steel autoclaves for a period 7 hours. The cooked agave is then distilled in stainless steel pot stills to approximately 54%. Reposado and Anejo styles are aged for 8 and 16 months respectively in Jack Daniels and Heaven Hill ex-bourbon casks until being bottled with distillery well water. The tequila pours a very pale gold colour. Amidst the initial spices emerge scents of green olive, pine nut, candle wax and faint vegetal notes. The palate shows good concentration with a slightly oily mouthfeel and a spicy overlay. Baked capsicum, green olive and mild chile flavours are followed by fine, drying tannins and a subtle white pepper fade. A vibrant, well rounded, spicy anejo. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Pale golden color. Aromas of olive, flan, spiced nuts, cedar, and golden raisin follow through on a silky entry to a dryish medium-to-full body with excellent liveliness, depth and balance. Finishes with a warming fade of milk chocolate, nuts, and minerals.

    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $149. 99

    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%
    Closure: Cork

At the age of 17, Don Julio Gonzalez opened his first tequila distillery in 1942 in Atotonilco el Alto in Jalisco. His name has been synonymous with luxury tequila ever since. The distillery hand selects every one of its blue agaves at the peak of their sweetness and ripeness—waiting up to 12 years before harvesting. Rich clay soils and larger planting spaces help to ensure maximum nutrition and sunlight, resulting a sweeter Agave for premium tequila production. The Agaves are then slowly cooked in masonry ovens at Don Julio's 'La Primavera' Distillery, where the juice that is obtained is subsequently double distilled.

Other reviews... Aged for eighteen months in oak, the Anejo yields initial aromas of dill, brine and bitter green vegetables but the bouquet becomes muted with aeration. The palate entry is a tad sharp and acidic, but that smoothes out at midpalate as tastes of honey, saltwater taffy and pickles take charge. Ends spirited and pungent. 38% Alc./Vol. 85-89 points - wineenthusiast.com

El Caballito Cerrero Anejo Chato Agave Spirit (750ml)
    MEXICO
    $340. 00
    Bottle
    $4080.00 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

The Caballito Cerrero (“The one that doesn`t need horseshoes”) was created in 1950, by Don Alfonso Jimenez Rosales after he separated from Tequila Herradura, a company of which he was a founding partner. Establishing it in the Santa Rita factory built in 1873 by his father-in-law, Maximiano Hernandez Orozco, his son Claudio continued to produce tequila Caballito Cerrero until his death. It was not until 2018 that his descendants (the 15th generation of “vino mezcal” producers) took the decision to produce "Caballito Cerrero" as a standalone agave distillate, distinct from tequila and mezcal. The family ceased calling their product tequila, in defiance of the industrialization of the category, and as a mark of respect to the agave distillation traditions within the Amatitán region. The Jimenez family use only mature agaves, including both Azul, or Blue Weber (A. tequilana) and other varieties such as Chato (A. angustifolia), just as their ancestors have for fifteen generations. Caballito Cerrero remains a tiny distillery but one that has consistently been regarded as one of Mexico's finest. The relative elusiveness of their products has given them a 'cult' status among aficionados worldwide.

This expression employs the rare but traditional agave varietal "Chato" (Angustifolia). This squat agave is not uncommon in the valley around Guadalajara and would have been used in distilleries to produce spirit prior to the tequila "normas" being established in the middle of the 20th century. Chato's character is generally described as more vegetal than the Blue Weber and it shows here. The aroma opens sweet like a butter-menthol lozenge, alternating with a drier aspect that's mildly terpenic, herbal and woody. The palate is full bodied, with surprising intensity and vibrancy by Anejo standards. It manages to show off the best of both the agave and the wood, neither overwhelming. Butter textured with a superb mid palate burst of exotic agave flavours tempered by sweet smoke and wood spices, in moments, reminiscent of low-peat Islay whisky, with the kind of body and feel you associate with single malt. Butter menthol, pine shoots, vanillan oak and white pepper trail through the long peppery finish. An Anejo unlike any other.

    Bottle
    $1979.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Released January 2021, the nose of this aged expression is more restrained by oak than the Platinum Blanco or Reposado, but exhibits more elegance plus added layers of fruit bread and vanilla intermingling with white pepper, sappy agave and menthol tobacco. Silky yet peppery, the palate has an appealing grassy / roasted herb / agave character with hints of vanilla and brine entering through the chalky finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This Tequila has a golden and bright appearance and buttery, toasty aromas. The palate opens lightly sweet, suggesting honey-roasted nuts and a gentle honeysuckle note into a brisk, drying finish laced with black pepper. Created in collaboration with winemaker Randy Ullom, this is a blend of a two-year old añejo and six-year-old extra añejo. 93 points - Kara Newman, wineenthusiast.com

Fortaleza 100% Agave Anejo Tequila (750ml)

    ABV: 40%

Tequila Fortaleza (meaning “Fortitude”) is the same Tequila released under the “Los Abuelos” label, produced at the distillery of the same name - “Fortaleza” is the export label that developed due to a trademark conflict with a Rum with the name "Abuelos" that was already being distributed in the USA.

Located in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, Los Abuelos are a quality orientated producer rooted in traditions established centuries ago. Their tequilas are produced from estate grown, 100% stone milled agave. A brick oven with meter thick walls cooks the agave for thirty six hours. The crushed agave is then washed with mountain water from the Volcan de Tequila to separate the pulp from the woody fibres to create the 'mosto'. The woody fibres of the agave are removed at this time, and taken to the fields to use as compost. The agave mosto is then naturally fermented for five days in small wood vats, and then double distilled using small, labor-intensive copper pot stills.

The distinctive bottles are hand-blown in Tonala, Jalisco by artisan glassmakers and the bottle tops, artisan designed and hand made. They represent the harvested heart of the agave.

Tasting notes: Deep bright gold colour preludes a big, buttery opening sniff that suddenly recedes into near neutrality. Like the Reposado, this takes time to 'wake up'. Later inspection finds enticing scents of butter menthol lozenge, beeswax, cedary oak and hints of grilled pineapple. A light entry develops into a medium dry, buttery yet fresh profile that's creamy textured and with vibrant yet controlled spices. Grilled corn flavours are followed by a semi sweet herbaceous fade that's refreshed by hints of eucalyptus. Beeswax returns into the aftertaste. Shows good length. Immensely attractive, fresh-styled Anejo. 40% Alc./Vol.

Finishes clean, salty and dry with an exceptionally long white pepper, clove and lanolin aftertaste. A vibrant and complex Anejo in which the oak never overpowers. Great balance. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The bouquet features wonderful aromas of caramel, cream, pastry dough and nutmeg with a background hint of honeyed peanuts. Entry is spicy and full-bodied; the midpalate displays a trace of vanillin that supports the more vibrant flavors of brine, salt, green vegetable and green pepper. In 1989 two visionaries, John Paul DeJoria and entrepreneur Martin Crowley formed The Patrón Spirits Company with the singular goal of producing “the best tequila in the world”. Under the stewardship of DeJoria and former Seagram executive Ed Brown, a new distilling factory was built in Jalisco. With the guidance of the renown master distiller Francisco Alcarez, the new factory was designed as a state-of-the-art complex but with a core steeped in tradition. Patrón Tequila has since become the world’s number one ultra premium tequila, outselling it’s nearest competitor by eight times in the United States alone. In 2004 Patrón Tequila was recognized with the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences Five Star Diamond Award. Patrón is the first spirits brand ever to receive this prestigious honor. The Company’s headquarters are in Las Vegas Nevada.

Jalisco, Mexico is considered the most ideal region for the production of the Blue Agave plant. The climate is warm and the soil is clayey with high ferrous oxide content, resulting in Agaves of higher "honey" or sugar content. Patrón tequilas are made from premium selected Weaber Tequilana Blue Agave plants. The trimmed heart of a premium agave plant resembles a large "pineapple" and takes eight to nine years to reach maturity. There are certain "bitter" sprouts which must be carefully removed from the "pineapple" before steam baking. Few distilleries still take the care and time to remove these sprouts as Patron does. After harvesting the Agave’s, the next step in Patron’s production is the slow vapour steam baking in masonry ovens. This steam baking takes approximately thirty six hours (most tequila factories fast cook the pineapples caramelizing the outside and leaving much of the inside under cooked, bitter and starchy.) The cooked agave is then carefully torn and placed in a shallow stone milling pit and slowly macerated by large stone milling wheels. Crushing in this fashion leaves the sweet juice freely absorbed in the mescal fibers. The juice filled fiber is then placed in wooden fermentation vats. Once in the fermentation vats the juice is naturally adjusted and yeast added to encourage fermentation. This fermentation lasts for sixty to seventy two hours. The "must" is then submitted to a double distillation in copper pot sills. The tequila is then balanced to 80 proof (40% Alcohol by volume) and fine filtered. Finally, like Patron’s extraordinary commitment to quality, the Patrón bottle is also unique. Each beautifully designed glass bottle is hand made and individually numbered making every one a collectable.

Patrón Añejo is a delicate blend of uniquely aged tequilas. All the tequilas are aged in small white oak barrels for a minimum of twelve months. As in many premium red wines, the blends must be adjusted for each vintage.

Tasting note: Pale straw colour with a water-like hue. Subdued with subtle notes of charry vanillan oak, liquorice, old tobacco and clay. Medium to full bodied; exceptionally smooth delivery includes flavours of sweet spice, baked citrus and hints of peppermint. Ends fleeting, dry. The aftertaste suggests liquorice, light spice and cedary. 40% Alc./Vol.

A new entrant into the Tequila market comes from a joint venture between Moët Hennessy and the Gallardo family. Using only lowland Blue Weber agaves, production is overseen by Master Distiller, Anna María Romero Mena.

'Cristalinos' are the latest trend in premium tequila. They're matured in American oak, then charcoal filtered to remove any colour. The result looks like a Blanco but tastes and smells like a Reposado. Volcan De Mi Tierra's expression is a blend of anejo and extra anejo tequilas aged for four months with different cask finishes, including whisky and cognac.

Other reviews... Slivery straw color. Aromas and flavors of pressed flowers, clay, hints of celery, and clove with a supple, crisp, dryish light body and a warming, amusing, medium-length finish with nuances of hazelnut and roasted almond. If you're into Tequila, you'll already know that the NOM (or distiller registration number) is the only real way to determine which disitllery produced your tequila. Generally speaking, Tequila brands, as opposed to producers, select a single distillery to work with and they use that brand’s NOM on their bottles. But this is not always the case. And with more than 500 brands produced by about 70 distillers, the brand name is not a reliable indication of who made the product. Knowing the NOM is an absolute necessity if you're keen on ensuring the provenence (and quality) of your purchase. As one of the only companies to offer tequila from several distilleries under a single brand, the ArteNOM venture emphasises this Mexican convention in marketing their tequila, labelling their limited releases as "Seleccion de 1445", for example. The numbers will change from batch to batch depending on the source.

In Atotonilco El-Alto, Jalisco (Elev. 4,620′), El Arquitecto Enrique Fonseca is a fifth-generation agave cultivator and master distiller, possessing the largest highland agave holdings in the industry. Matured in lightly toasted French Limousin oak for two years, this is Mexico's answer to Single Malt Scotch or Cognac. While some of the natural vibrancy and exotic agave character is lost with extended time in barrel, what you gain is a luxurious mouthfeel and sweet, buttery notes. Clase Azul Ultra Anejo Tequila (750ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $2699. 00
    Bottle
    $32388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
This is the legendary Clase Azul bottling that consolidated Arturi Lomeli's reputation as a high-end tequila craftsman.
It quickly become the prize jewel in the portfolio, only surpassed by Clase Azul's most expensive offering to date - a US $30,000 ceramic bottle studded with amber and 24-karat gold, created to celebrate the brand's 15th anniversary.

Made from nine year old 100% organic Tequilana Weber Blue Agaves, cooked in traditional brick ovens for 72 hours and fermented using a proprietary yeast which is said to contribute natural sweetness and a silky texture. Following distillation, 'Ultra' is aged for three to five years (depending on your source) in heavy char, x Oloroso Spanish sherry casks. The first edition was limited to 100 bottles (50 for Mexico and 50 for the United States) with subsequent runs limited to 100 bottles per batch. At this age, the tequila takes on the character of a super-premium whisky or fine brandy with nuances of "cinnamon, almond, vanilla, fruits and a rich, earthy balance."

Lomeli says this tequila is for savoring, not mixing in a cocktail or downing as a shot. "We want people to taste the tequila, to make them erase that bad memory that every single person has about low-quality tequila," he said. "You can sip it and enjoy it neat without having that nightmare of hangovers."

More than any other Clase Azul before it, 'Ultra' comes packaged to match its extraordinary contents. Once fired and glazed, the distinctive black ceramic decanter is adorned with a 24k gold label and a design hand-painted in liquid platinum by renowned artist, Leon Fernandez. The Agave medallion is Ley sterling silver, while the vessel itself is sealed with a pewter cap. Each decanter takes around 40 days to create. In short, it's a true collector's piece and a work of art that will be appreciated long after the tequilas gone. 40% Alc./Vol.

Also known as the “Edición Indígena-Mazahua” ( Mazahua Edition) in relation to the bottle's cultural references, this exceptionally hard-to-find Clase Azul marks a high point in our Tequila collection: A nine-year-old produced from traditionally roasted agaves, rested for 25 months in ex-bourbon barrels, and packaged in a hand made and hand painted Talavera style decanter with a 24-carat-gold charm on the neck. The decanter also includes unfired clay, representing the history of the people and their land. Each decanter is numbered and signed by both the master distiller and the Mazahuan artisan who decorated the piece. A true collector's item.

Notes from the bottler: The viscous body shows off a delicate, yet balanced mouth-feel. Spanish for Bordeaux, "Burdeos" is Patron's super-premium tequila finished in casks from the famous French wine region. The production process is unusual to say the least - after an initial distillation, the spirit spends a year in American and French oak barrels. It's then distilled again, then racked into x-Bordeaux red wine barrels which contribute additional complexity - in particular flavours of vanilla, raisin and dried fruit.

To complete the package the bottle is presented in a gorgeous display case. Apparently, the taste is as impressive as it looks. Be tempted!

Other reviews... Delightful aromas of dill, asparagus, baked bread and black peppercorn; following aeration subtle notes of vanilla, just-sawn oak, loose leaf tobacco and fennel are added. Entry is poised, sap-like and delicately honeyed; midpalate is regal, satiny textured, rich in grapy yet vegetal and spicy flavor. Concludes long, layered and succulent.

This will make a stunning addition to any bar.

Formerly a travel retail offering, Patron's decision to release this for a broader audience comes as competition hots up in the super premium Tequila category.
Piedra, which means “stone” in Spanish, is one of very few tequilas that's still produced in an age-old way as opposed to a more industrialized process.

Geoff Kleinman from drinkspirits.com explains, "Piedra uses the traditional process of grinding the roasted agave heart (called the pina) using a stone wheel called a tahona. The resulting juice is called agua miel, which translates to “honey water”. Typically this agua miel is fermented on its own, but for Piedra, the crushed agave fiber is added back into the mix. This mix is distilled and then aged in a combination of new American oak and French oak casks for at least three years (making it an extra anejo tequila). As with many high end releases, Patron Piedra is then bottled in a fancy etched glass decanter topped with an enclosure that emulates the tahona stone. This bottle is then enclosed in a fabric lined display case that looks a lot like a fancy coffin."

He adds, "There’s no question that Patron Piedra is an expertly crafted tequila which manages to maintain the core character of the Patron flavor experience while coming at it with a lot more balance and finesse."

Made from 100% blue weber agaves, the tequila was matured in both American and French oak casks.

Other reviews... Patrón's first-ever extra añejo is aged at least three years, and is named for the stone wheel (piedra) that crushes agave to make Tequila. It has an amber hue and a rich aroma that mixes caramel, dried fruit and peppery notes. The palate is silky and rounded, with lots of caramel and oak up front, tapering off gently with anise, ginger and cinnamon. 40% Alc./Vol.

    $2820.00 Dozen

First released in 1995 to celebrate the company's 200th birthday, José Cuervo Reserva de la Familia pioneered the category of extended age Tequila. Matured for a minimum of two years in a combination of American and French oak barrels, some of the reserve components are up to thirty years old. The tequila itself which has been described as "rich and brandy-like" doesn't change much from year to year. And just as consistency has become its hallmark, so too has been its high praise.

What does change annually is the packaging, with a different Mexican artist making each release a collector’s item. For the 2017 Edition, acclaimed painter, Abraham Cruzvillegas has depicted a golden monkey on a royal blue background. Cruzvillega's multimedia exhibition at the Cuervo Cultural Centre entitled 'Tequioh', paid homage to the workers, the tools, the rain, the pollinating bats and the plants that make this exceptional spirit possible.

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Pale copper gold. These extra old tequilas are hard to pin down... this one combines blanco-like vibrancy with the kind of depth you'd expect from XO cognac - brine, charred capsicum, smoldering eucalyptus, later beeswax, vanilla and menthol in a bouquet that also presents a drier, woody aspect including cigar box, cedar, white pepper.... Likewise the silky delivery matches sappy agave and butter menthol lozenge-like flavours against drying astringency. It's delicate and somewhat fleeting through the finish, trailing off with black tea, potpourri, white pepper, hints of grilled pineapple, vanilla and trace beeswax. The overall effect strikes a fine balance between young and old. 40% Alc./Vol.

This unique tequila has been introduced in celebration of Cuervo’s long family tradition of tequila production that spans more than two hundred years. The family selects only the best of its tequilas, maturing them in a private cellar, the majority aged at least 30 years. Family member, Juan Domingo Beckmann recalls: "I was five years old and I remember being here with my father and grandfather preparing Reserva’s limited edition for 1972. This tequila was a private reserve, shared exclusively with family and close personal friends; that is why the name of this product is Reserva de la Familia, which means 'The Family Reserve”.

This is the 16th installment of the limited-edition handcrafted wooden box collection from Jose Cuervo, this time adorned with the artistic styling of celebrated tattoo artist Jerónimo López Ramírez, known in the tattoo community as “Dr. Lakra.”

Dr. Lakra started creating tattoo illustrations in 1990 when he discovered that tattooing was a form of art that could be transferred from the skin to a variety of inanimate surfaces. By mixing traditional tattoo art and Mexican graphic art, he transforms objects such as vintage posters, Japanese print art, paper glasses and plastic dolls. Lakra’s work has been shown in individual exhibitions in galleries around the world including London, Berlin, Tokyo, and of course Mexico.

    Bottle
    $23988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
With only 580 bottles on offer world wide, this ranks as one of the most exclusive tequilas ever produced.

The special bottling commemorates the advent of tequila production and the establishment of 10 generations of Cuervo family tradition: on November 2, 1758 King Carlos of Spain granted Don Jose Antonio de Cuervo the first plot of land on which to cultivate agave. In anticipation of the 250th anniversary, Cuervo's jimadores planted blue agaves on the same land granted in 1758 and used these estate-grown plants exclusively in the production of Jose Cuervo 250 Aniversario. Every decanter maintains a direct link to this historic event and pays tribute to the centuries of labour and family passion that led to the creation of an industry.

It is reportedly composed of 5, 10, 15 and 20 year old anejo tequilas, plus a selection of blanco tequilas uncovered in the Cuervo cellars that had been stored there for a century. The blanco was aged for three years in oak barrels before blending with the rest of the aged spirits. Finally, the tequila was finished in sherry casks for an extra 10 months.

Packaged in a hand-blown decanter inspired by the original glass bottle first used by Jose Cuervo to ship Tequila to towns throughout Mexico, and presented in a custom oak box containing a reproduction of the Spanish land grant for the original Cuervo agave plantation. A sequential number etched into the glass certifies the product's rarity and authenticity. A glass stopper for the decanter is also included. 40% Alc./Vol. One bottle only to sell.

Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Añejo Tequila uses 100% Blue Agave in its production. These are hand-selected agaves, carefully cultivated for dozens of years. The agave is then baked in antique ovens of stone and clay , the sugars are then extracted and double distilled. Finally, Reserva is aged a minimum of three years in new French limousin and American oak barrels to produce a stunning tequila experience. The Cuervo Reserva comes beautifully packaged in a unique presentation box. Every year, Jose Cuervo offers the opportunity to appreciate Mexican artists through its box designs. What does change annually is the packaging, with a different Mexican artist making each release a collector’s item. For example, the dark, silhouetted lines that cover the surface of the 2019 edition wooden box are designed by the artist Jorge Pardo. He's created a series of drawings depicting jimadores skillfully working the fields of western Mexico with the coa and barreton. The designs produced digitally from real photographs, are composed of dense superimposed stripes that make the whole difficult to take in at a glance. This method of visual composition not only blurs the bodies of the jimadores themselves, but also creates an illusion of movement that lends the piece a charged energy. This theme and approach hearken back to the great traditions of Mexican avant-garde painters of the first half of the 20th century who often depicted subjects of rural development and revolution.

Although 'KAH' means "Life" in Mayan, the striking packaging for these tequilas is inspired by a 3000 year old Mexican celebration known as the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). A death/rebirth festival, it honors deceased loved ones. The skulls containing KAH tequila reference traditional Calaveras (skulls made from sugar) used in Dia de los Muertos rituals of centuries gone by. Like Northern European 'Vanitas' paintings, each hand-painted bottle reminds one of mortality, and doing so encorouges us to celebrate life (with KAH Tequila in-hand, of course!) No two bottles are the same.

But while the brand has attracted a lot of attention for its Day of the Dead presentation, what's the tequila itself like? Thankfully the gimmick is only skin deep. Reviews have been favourable. We look forward to tasting these tequilas soon, all of which are certified organic.

Other reviews... Rich old gold color. Aromas of coconut frosting, caramelized nuts, latex, and peppery spice with a lightly tannic, dryish medium body and a wood driven cola, tobacco, pepper dust and charcoal finish. 40% Alc./Vol. International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal

Milagro, which means ‘miracle’ in Spanish, was founded in 1997 by two Mexican entrepreneurs who successfully built the brand in their native country and the USA (the two largest Tequila markets). Famed whisky producer, William Grant & Sons has recently acquired a 51% stake in the company.

Agaves are harvested about 8 to 12 years after planting, and the juice is extracted from the heart of the plant by roasting in clay ovens made from the estate’s volcanic soil. The fermented juice is triple distilled in small batches.

Tasting note: Deep straw colour with a pale green blush. First pass offers scents of crushed chile and black pepper with a gentle prickle. Several minutes later the spices take back seat revealing beeswax, salt and some fresh herbal notes (lavender?) Wonderful vibrancy and spiciness for an Anejo - more what you'd expect from Blanco tequila. Deceptively light entry crescendos into a medium bodied anejo that's dry, salty and delicately peppery. Slightly oily texture. Beeswax finish followed by a subtle aftertaste of unripe pineapple, green wood and white pepper. Tails off a little too soon but compensates with its terrific complexity. 40% Alc./Vol.

Launched in early 2017, Patrón's Sherry cask-matured Tequila was limited to just 8,000 bottles as a Duty Free exclusive. It takes a leaf out of the Scotch Whisky Industry, departing from the traditional x Bourbon barrels that are more commonly used to mature tequila.

“Sherry casks exhibit an elegant flavour and aroma of pecans, which marry beautifully with the taste of agave,” says Francisco Alcaraz, Patrón’s master distiller, who has been experimenting with Sherry casks for several years.

Anticipating the expanding export market for 100% agave tequilas, the Porfidio Tequila company was created by Austrian entrepreneur Martin Grassl. Aiming at the super-premium market, Grassl employed techniques learned from his experience in the apple-brandy industry to create a world class tequila experience. The brand has become famous for its hand-blown bottle which actually contains a small glass cactus. Although the cactus plant has nothing to do with the production of tequila, the bottle has received numerous awards for it's beautiful and innovative design. Grassl himself, has adopted the pen name of "Don Ponciano Porfidio" to give his product a Mexican character, as well as to poke fun at the snobbery of some tequila makers. Regardless of the animosity in the industry over Grassl’s methods, Porfidio has drawn considerable attention to tequila and its presence has helped the sales and promotion of other super-premium brands.

Porfidio don't make their own tequila: they buy what they consider the best from other manufacturers. Grassl rents five distilleries from several weeks to a few months every year, replacing its employees with his own crew to make his product. It may be difficult for consumers who want to know which distillery is producing their favorite Porfidio at any given time, with the tequilas having been produced by the distilleries who make El Viejito, Arette, Tres Alegres Compadres, Regional, and J. R. Reyes tequilas. Porfidio’s success has upset many producers who feel the brand gets inappropriate attention, despite coming from unnamed sources. Nevertheless, 60% of Porfidio's sales are in Mexico. The company remains one of a handful to offer a single-barrel añejo, rather than a blend (the other is Cuervo's Reserva) which has also become the most successful product in the Porfidio portfolio.

While añejo tequila is normally matured in a number of oak barrels and then combined prior to bottling in order to achieve a level of consistency, each bottle of Porfidio Anejo is the product of one single selected barrel. Porfidio has been the winner in four consecutive years of the World Champion Añejo Tequila Award by the Wine Enthusiast with the highest qualification ever given to a tequila brand (98 out of 100). 39.3% Alc./Vol. Very Limited Stocks.

"Roca" is Patron's new premium selection, named after the Spanish word for “rock” (roca), "...a reference to the giant volcanic-stone wheel traditionally used to crush the cooked agave." Originally, manufacturers beat the cooked agave pinas with mallets to break them up once they were soft and cool. Then they moved to the tahona, or grinding wheel, operated by mules, oxen or horses (nowadays more likely by a tractor). At Patron, a two-ton volcanic stone tahona is employed. The Anejo is aged about 14 months.

A stunning ultra-aged tequila unlike any other and one of the greatest Anejos ever produced.

'Spirits chasers' who are always after the latest and greatest releases as well as the more esoteric, would almost be disappointed to know that Tapatio has been floating around Mexican bars for about 75 years and already enjoys a strong following in its country of origin. Outside of Mexico is another story. Until recently, the brand was not even obtainable north of the Mexican border, at least not by legal channels (it only debuted in the US in 2012.) The family owned distillery behind the brand, "La Altena", preferenced the promotion of another of their Tequilas,"El Tesoro" for overseas markets, but thankfully Chief Distiller, Carlos Camarena, finally succumbed to the pressure to release the Tapatio tequilas to faithfuls around the world. Some of these were no doubt introduced to its charms on a Mexican bender from Juarez to Tapachula. Many others probably fell in love with the drink from a single shot and became instant converts.

The arrival of Tapatio Tequilas in Australia is a welcome one, as from a production point of view, this is as traditional as you will get: 100% estate grown agave, brick ovens, wooden vats and copper stills make La Altena one of the last bastions of old school tequila, resulting in a drink of character rather than a mass produced commodity tailored for the 'senoritas in sombreros' segment - even though some would say there is nothing wrong with that, we know where we stand when we're looking for a true Mexican delight!

This very special Extra Anejo expression was previously reserved only for the friends and family of Don Felipe and Carlos Camarena. It was aged for around four years in new French oak before being rested in five litre glass vessels. Spirits can't evolve in glass, you say? Well, agave breaks all the rules. From a 50ml sample, the Gran Reserva has a bright copper appearance with the first pass offering sensuous aromas of melted butter, salted nuts and forgivable flashes of varnish. Second round finds sweeter scents of vanilla, marzipan and stewed fruits. A light entry expands into a surprisingly fresh, off-dry profile including beeswax, cedary oak, dried herbs, suggestions of dark chocolate and fruit paste (kumquat? fig?) Ends perfectly balanced, crisp, vibrant and super long with cocoa and cigar box lingering. A stunning ultra-aged tequila unlike any other we’ve tasted. Don't miss it. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Bronze color. Aromas of fresh lumber, luxury tobacco, caramel, prune, eucalyptus, and vanilla-scented black tea with a fat body and a very long cherry-almond, dark roasted agave, sandalwood, baking spices, and root beer finish. A superlative sipping tequila that combines elegant wood with rustic, authentic agave flavors; an outstanding spirit. Superlative. 98 points - tastings.com

...Given this is one of the most aged tequilas on the market, it tastes surprisingly vibrant. Sure, there are heavily-raisinated, dried fruit, dark caramel, banana, and sweet vanilla flavors. However, that's not the only thing going on here. Strong, funky herbal notes of sage, thyme and dill poke through. You can still taste the peppery vegetal properties of the agave, and there's a lemony acidity to round it out. Given how old it is, it actually has more complexity and finesse than some añejos a fraction of its age. 97 points - distiller.com

"...a definite anejo for the blanco lover." - drinkhacker.com

Described by many connoisseurs as one of the world's finest sipping tequilas, Tapatio's Anejo is aged around 18 months in first-fill ex-Bourbon casks, six months over the minimum requirement. It pours a pale straw colour with a subtle green blush. Opening aromas are moderate, semi sweet and buttery followed by hints of wild honey and menthol. The palate is medium bodied with a delicate, juicy sweetness countered by a herbaceous, gently peppery finish. The wood has been kept in check. Concludes with a brief green chille fade. 38% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Aged for 18 months in used Jim Beam barrels, this straw-hued añejo has a lively, zingy peppery aroma. The palate is similarly light, with a floral hint and gentle vanilla fade braced up with drying black pepper heat. Overall, silky and complex. 93 points - wineenthusiast.com

The nose doesn’t give up much. Hints of both agave and creme brulee, but both are very light. A mysterious nosing leads to a moderate wallop on the body: Agave hits you first, then red and black pepper. The silky smooth caramel notes come on after that, washing down the heat. Nice balance — though the finish lacks much secondary character — a definite anejo for the blanco lover. - drinkhacker.com

The relatively new 'XA' classification includes the most aged and (often) most pricey tequilas on the market. Established in 2006, it applies to tequilas aged three years or longer. Like Anejos, you get even more depth and richness from the extended oak contact but less overt presence of agave. This is Tromba's first XA and the presentation demonstrates just how proud the distillery is. The company employed Hipólito Gutiérrez, one of Mexico’s most celebrated glass-blowers to create the distinctive 500ml bottles. We have one only to sell of 328 available globally. More batches are expected to follow. If the rest of the range are anything to go by, this should be quite special. 42.1% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: The young Chardonnay-like colour is only marginally deeper than the Reposado. Retains good agave definition and vibrancy alongside aromas of oak shavings and cough lozenge - also slightly terpenic (menthol / crushed pine shoots?) A lively, bright and well-rounded Anejo with a moderate mid palate burst of juicy agave and sweet spice. Ends dry, tingly, peppery hinting at balsa wood, pencil shavings and dried pineapple. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producer... Aroma: cooked agave, butter, vanilla, baking spices, dried fruit, butterscotch. Palate: light oak, creamy butter, cooked agave, citrus, brine, mild pepper heat. Finish: velvety soft with subtle sweetness, and the heat of the oak and pepper at the end. 40% Alc./Vol.
