Milagro, which means ‘miracle’ in Spanish, was founded in 1997 by two Mexican entrepreneurs who successfully built the brand in their native country and the USA (the two largest Tequila markets). Famed whisky producer, William Grant & Sons has recently acquired a 51% stake in the company.

Agaves are harvested about 8 to 12 years after planting, and the juice is extracted from the heart of the plant by roasting in clay ovens made from the estate’s volcanic soil. The fermented juice is triple distilled in small batches.

Tasting note: Deep straw colour with a pale green blush. First pass offers scents of crushed chile and black pepper with a gentle prickle. Several minutes later the spices take back seat revealing beeswax, salt and some fresh herbal notes (lavender?) Wonderful vibrancy and spiciness for an Anejo - more what you'd expect from Blanco tequila. Deceptively light entry crescendos into a medium bodied anejo that's dry, salty and delicately peppery. Slightly oily texture. Beeswax finish followed by a subtle aftertaste of unripe pineapple, green wood and white pepper. Tails off a little too soon but compensates with its terrific complexity. 40% Alc./Vol.
