    Diplomatico Reserva Rum (700ml)
    VENEZUELA
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
When this rum debuted in 1989 it took Venezuela by storm. 840,000 bottles were sold there alone in the first 24 months. It is a 50 / 50 amalgam of heavy pot still vs lighter column still rums, aged for up to eight years. A step up in richness and sweetness from the Anejo, this also ups the ante aromatically.

Tasting notes: Deep copper colour with deep straw hue. Deep and luxurious nose at first delivering coffee, chocolate and orange cake, then with time in the glass maple syrup and spice notes begin to dominate. The palate shows restrained sweetness amid a plethora of dark chocolate and milk-coffee like flavours, the maple ebbs and flows. Throughout, a fruity/floral undertone keeps the palate fresh. A feather-weight spicy surge at the finish follows through to a long, drying, light chocolate & orange-cake aftertaste with hints of hay emerging. So clean and relaxed. Delicious on its own or dedicated to upmarket cocktails.40.0% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Copper color. Aromas of waxy honeycomb, mocha gelato, and chocolate graham crackers with a satiny, fruity-yet-dry medium body and a smooth, creamy latte, toffee, mineral, and banana gelatin candy finish. Very smooth and tasty.

2001 Diplomatico Single Vintage Rum (700ml)

    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
When conditions in the field concentrate the sugars in the cane, it favours the production of the very finest grades of rum.
2001 was one such vintage. This follows on from the superlative 2000 which ranked as one of the finest rums we've tasted to date. In choosing the reserves to blend for this release, Master blender, Tito Cordero was ultra selective. All components spent 12 years in x-bourbon and x-single malt whisky casks before being rested in Spanish Oloroso sherry wood. They represent some of the very finest spirit in the Diplomatico cellars. Like its more expensive sibling, it comes impressively packaged in a reverse tapered bottle, with a heavy set base and a cork inset into a weighty high quality metal stopper.

Reviews on the blogoshere suggest this to be at least as good as the 2000. No tasting notes available.

    Diplomatico Anejo Rum (700ml)
    VENEZUELA
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Few people will be aware that as well as being home to the famous rum based medicinal bitters, Angostura, Venezuela makes a number of well-respected barrel-aged golden and dark Rums. Local producers say the combination of tropical humidity and cool winds that bathe Venezuela's sugar-cane fields helps to age the rum faster than in other countries. As José Mandry, president of the Venezuelan Alcohols Chamber that groups most of the country's rum makers says, 'Venezuela is a blessed land situated at the north of South America where the winds don't tear us up but gently rock us, and gently rock our rums.' The change in temperature from day to night stimulates interaction between the alcohol distilled from cane juice and the barrels, enhancing the taste.

This bottling is the ideal starting point for your experiences with Diplomatico, or even Rum in general. The majority (95%) input from lighter, column still rums and the average of four years in barrel translates into a lighter profile that's as versatile as it is accessible.

Tasting notes: Very pale straw colour with water like hue. Slightly restrained, drier styled aromatics offer a top note of vanilla bean above iced coffee with malted milk, honey, a whiff of coconut oil, a sprinkling of cinnamon and a subtle grassy undertone adding freshness. Soft creamy palate delivers medium dry flavours of malt, vanilla, sweet spice, and a touch of mocha rounded off with a spicy flourish. Perfect balance. Clean, dry finish. Reasonable length with an aftertaste of mocha and spice. The leaner, lighter and more elegant rum of the collection. 40.0% Alc./Vol.

Other Reviews.... The nosing passes find layers of honey, old leather, palm oil, old oak and molasses. The palate entry explodes with succulent tastes of oak, vanilla cream, and honey; the midpalate offers tastes of cookie spices, raisins, dates, and dark chocolate. Ends up balanced, correctly sweet, and elegant. A fabulous deal. - P.P. (5/1/2007) - 90-95: Superb/Highly Recommended Wine Enthusiast Magazine

...Gold amber color. Aromas of toffeed nuts, dried pineapple and papaya, mocha, vanilla bean, and rich brown spices follow through on a smooth, velvety entry to an off-dry medium-to-full body with honey, cherry cola, and tropical fruit salad notes. Finishes with nice polished wood and spice notes and a balancing wave of pepper and wet stone minerality. A little on the sweet side, but extremely inviting and drinkable. 2002 Diplomatico Single Vintage Rum (700ml)
    VENEZUELA
    $280. 00
    Bottle
    $3360.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
The result of a single crop, distilled in a combination of old copper pot stills and a batch kettle. The rum is aged in bourbon casks and x-single malt barrels for approximately 12 years before finishing in old sherry casks. The 2002 bottling completes a triptych of Venezuelan vintages with the next release expected to be several years away. Impressively packaged in a reverse tapered bottle, with a heavy set base and a cork inset into a weighty high quality metal stopper.

Tasting note: The glossy, deep copper colour is a pleasure to behold. Initially reticent with subsequent passes yielding a slow cascade of dessert styled aromatics opening as raw sugar / molasses with aeration adding sponge cake, dates and vanilla slice; Five minutes ups the intensity and accents sticky date pudding, creme caramel and later hints at toffee apple and cinnamon. Creamy entry with flavours of raw sugar, molasses, vanilla and cinnamon to the fore. Finish is gently warming, finely balanced, with cinnamon and dates echoing in the aftertaste. 43% Alc./Vol.

    $1559.88 Dozen

The Barbet Column distillation system, originally created in France was brought to Venezuela the same year as the Batch Kettle - 1959. The still is made of 100% copper, aiding the elimination of undesirable compounds which form during the fermentation process. Aged in x Bourbon barrels and produced from high quality sugar cane molasses, the Barbet Column typically produces a distillate with a strong fruity profile.

Tasting note: [Batch 3 tasted] Slightly lighter in colour and on the nose than the No.1, this seems all round softer and better structured; almost floral with distant citrus blossom and fresh honey notes over deeper, richer scents of vanilla cream and dried tropical fruits, especially banana. Fabulous mouthfeel, with a viscous, semi sweet entry, building with fanning spices towards a perfectly balanced finish. Raw sugar, cinnamon, light liquorice and dried banana late in the creamy, long and delicately spiced aftertaste. Great rum. You'd expect this to be reserved for something special. 5000 bottles. 47% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.
Don Papa Small Batch Rum (700ml)
    PHILIPPINES
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Ths rum takes its inspiration from the Phillipine's former occupiers, back when Spain still colonised the country in 1565 a rule which lasted for 333 years. Inspired by the story of Papa Isio, who played a big part in the late-19th century Philippine revolution, the rum is made using sugar cane grown on the island of Negros in the Philippines. It's first aged for at least 7 years in oak barrels in the foothills of Mount Kanlaon before being blended. The packaging is terrific. We look forward to tasting the rum! 40% Alc./Vol.
    Doorly's 8 Year Old Barbados Rum (700ml)
    BARBADOS
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Established in 1908 and now owned by Foursquare Distilery, Doorly's was the first non-bulk rum to be exported from Barbados. This 8 year old is a new expression, reportedly intended for the Australian market. It's a single Blended Rum (Traditional Column and Pot Still) bottled at 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... In the glass Doorly’s 8 year old is a classic reddish/golden brown.  Likely there is some caramel colouring to help with colour consistency. Nosing reveals a light, fruity typical Bajan style of rum.  Classic rum I would say.  It’s beautifully balanced.  It displays all the classic traits of tropical ageing in American oak casks.  Lovely light summer fruits, vanilla and the sweet/sour mash spice of the Bourbon casks. If this was from another producer I would be surprised to be getting such a great balance.  I have said it before and I will say it again.  Foursquare, like Appleton Estate simply do not make bad rum.  An average Foursquare rum, by their high standards will eclipse the best of most rum producer's efforts.  By a mile. Sipping the Doorly’s 8 offers few surprises.  Which on this occasion is no bad thing! Everything that is promised on the nose is delivered when sipped.  Nice oak notes and spicy sweet/sour bourbon mash. You also get sweet fruity notes – a little grape and some coconut.  A slight caramel sweetness as well, a just a touch of toffee. It perhaps lacks the little extra bite and complexity some of the older Foursquare offerings have.  4 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

    Dos Maderas Atlantic Rum (700ml)
    SPAIN
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.5%

The fifth label in the Dos Maderas portfolio of Sherry cask-aged rums, "Atlantic" follows the standard set by 5+3, 5+5, Selección, and Luxus. Inspired by the vast ocean that embraces the Sherry bodega of Williams & Humbert on the western shores of Jerez de la Frontera, the rum's maturation navigates a blend of five-year ex-Bourbon oak-aged Rums from Barbados and Guyana, finished in twenty year old Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks. While Palo Cortado butts are employed for most of the Dos Maderas stable, proprietary VOS PX Sherry ‘botas’ are emphasized here, contributing notes of figs, dates, honey, treacle, chocolate, tobacco and leather. Silky and medium sweet, the flavours lose momentum towards the finish where vanillas take over. It may not be quite as decadent as the 100% PX matured 'Luxus', however Atlantic is perfect for cocktails. Try it in a Mojito, Daiquiri, Piña Colada, Rum Runner, Negroni or Old-Fashioned to get familiar with its range and versatility. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [15ml sample] The distinct notes of sherry oak and sweet Pedro Ximenez Sherry found here typify the house style: Seductive aromas and flavours of caramelised fruits, sticky date, light molasses and vanilla cream feature with honeycomb and caramel rallying late. Decadent and almost aged muscat-like to finish, as with the other Dos Maderas rums, the concentration at standard ABV combined with near perfect sweet/dry balance make it stand out from the pack. Classy and elegant, through and through. 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Deep polished copper / gold with pale straw edges. Exudes superb aromas of brown sugar, vanilla bean and creamy soda in the initial pass, developing hints of milk chocolate, custard and dates. Medium sweet, then delicately bittersweet, sappy through the middle stage. Finish showcases a sensational burst of sugars in the form of molasses, dark chocolate, caramel and pipe tobacco. Other reviews... [2006 release] Fascinating nose - whisky like. The dark fruits remind me of Canadian Club 20 year old or a sherried single malt, like Glendronach 12. The nose continues with pastry, like an almond croissant, sweet wood, and something like black currants or cherries - incredible! The palate has a touch of sweetness up front to begin, but this is not a sweet rum. There is a good dose of wood and spice before exiting to a woody, medium-length finish. Other reviews... [2006 release] This rum was made on an old, wooden Greenheart still built in the 18th century. It has got a fabulously rich colour; deep amber. Aggressive aromas of leather, pepperiness, demerara, coffee bean, chicory, anise, and a subtle fruity berry quality on the finish. This is the most pedal to the metal of El Dorado's three single still series (Enmore and Versailles being the other two). Comparatively, the Versailles has the heavy demerara but is more subtle and delicate, with vanilla and a smidge more fruit. The Enmore is demure on the demerara and has more chocolate and toffee. 40% Alc./Vol. - nataliemaclean.com/

'ICBU' was the marque used to identify rums from the Dutch owned Uitvulgt Distillery. While Uitvlugt continues to operate as a sugar refinery and producer of molasses, the equipment used for rum production reportedly ceased operation in 2000. (Not surprisingly, Uitvulgt's have become quite collectible). The still was subsequently moved to the Diamond Distillers Estate. Other reviews... The newish OB! Entirely aged in Guyana, where they have very greedy angels. The volumes go down fast, while the strengths remain high or even go up. Colour: gold. Nose: it seems that it’s a little simpler than the Mezan, but that’s probably the super-high strength. What I seem to find in the background is a bag of vegetables and herbs, such as capers (which is a flower, isn’t it?), and plenty of wood varnish, with an acetone-y side. Let’s dig deeper… With water: as expected, this is more wood-driven than the Ultra-clean Mezan, with a BTAC side (yup) and plenty of tarmac, tarry wood (restored old boat, teak oil), and just ideas of ‘brand new sneakers’. Mouth (neat): huge. Distilled vin jaune, mint essence, artichoke, concentrated walnut oil… All that is spectacular and, I have to say, wonderful. Huge distillate. With water: very extremely good. Please call the anti-rumporn brigade! Finish: very long, big and yet elegant and ‘well-chiselled’, always with a lot of tar (and other tar-like elements, pitch and such). Droplets of lemon in the aftertaste. Comments: like, I mean love it much more than the Port Mourant in the same series. Ça c’est un alcool, monseigneur, as they would have said at Versailles (the castle).

    GUYANA
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.5%

Guyana is justly famous for its rich, heavy Demerara Rums, named for a local river. Demerara Rums can be aged for extended periods (25-year-old varieties are on the market) and are frequently used for blending with lighter Rums from other regions. Neighboring Surinam and French Guyana produce similar full-bodied Rums. The El Dorado range of rums, often referred to as the "Liquid Gold of Guyana", are outstanding examples of the Demerara style. In 1992, the company introduced its El Dorado range of rums to the local and international markets. A small allocation has finally arrived in Australia.

The distillery has the facilities to produce every type of rum and has assured supplies of its basic raw material, molasses, from locally-grown sugar-cane. Its distilleries are entirely self-sufficient, with their own capability for steam and electricity generation, water supplies, water treatment, quality control and process laboratories. As well as the most up-to-date distillation equipment, Demerara Distillers possesses a wealth of traditional expertise, with old-style Demerara pot stills, and patent rum and alcohol stills. The last fully operating rectangular wooden Coffey still in the Western world continues to be used for the production of the company's finest spirits.

Tasting note: Pours a deep sienna brown with a gold ochre hue. Superb opening notes include sticky date pudding, creme caramel and hints of liquorice bullets after exposure. A creamy entry leads into a silky, middle weight profile of golden syrup / molasses and sweet spices rounded off with iced coffee and a gently warming finish with the sweetness in check. Delicately bitter, sarsaparilla / honeycombe fade. Old school Demerara that's both distinctive and impressive. Top buy. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

Launched in 2016, each one features a rum from one of three renowned Guyanese stills. Demerara distillers actually operate nine different stills, capable of producing a range of rum styles. Of significance are the three heritage Wooden stills in the operation, relocated from their original estates: Enmore, with its wooden continuous Coffey Still. Port Mourant, with its wooden Double Pot Still and Versailles with its wooden single pot still.

On the surface, the Rare Collection mirrors El Dorado’s 12, 15 and 21 year old rums, though the packaging is more conservative with low key colours and an embossed ship on the shoulder of the bottle. The big difference is that these are all-natural, single still, cask strength, unblended and non-chill filtered rums. They're also limited to 3,000 bottles worldwide.

The Port Mourant still is the world's only operational Wooden Double pot still. Founded in 1732, the original estate is reckoned as one of the oldest in the region. Traditionally the PM rum was very popular with the British Royal Navy. Nowadays, it's a key component in El Dorado's 15 Year Old. This special release was matured in x Bourbon barrels and bottled at 61.4% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.

Other reviews... The problem is that DDL have been too optimistic with their prices, as it seems. I had thought these new OBs would sell like Mars bars in Scotland, but the hefty prices (a disease called scotchitus severis) seem to have discouraged most rum lovers, and the bottles remain available from just everywhere on this planet. After all, they’re afraid of nothing, them who just launched a $500,000 50 yo rum. Now that's Guyanan dollars, and that's a 50 yo look-alike - you know, nasty 'anniversary' bottlings that suggest a 'faked' age and all that, some Scots do it as well. Colour: deep gold. Nose: much gentler, easier, without the phenolic base, and with more ‘average’ rum aromas, such as tropical fruits, papayas, pineapples… It’s really lovely, and at times you’re thinking about rhum agricole from Martinique, but there’s also a little too much sweet oak, in the modern Scotch style. Let’s see… With water: wood spices, unsweetened tea, vanilla… Mouth (neat): a bourbon of rum, clearly. Or a light spirit in some very active American oak. Vanilla, maple syrup, orange liqueur, a touch of ginger liqueur… With water: once again we’re between rum and bourbon. It’s fine, and I do enjoy these notes of artisan maple syrup, it’s just that the Versailles kills it. Finish: medium, sweet, bourbony. Vanilla and pineapples. Comments: don’t get me wrong, it’s excellent rum, but the traditional Demeraraness (excuse me?) is a little absent. A strong light rum. 81 points

    Classic Cocktail: Pina Colada

The Piña Colada was originally just the juice of a fresh pineapple served either strained (colada) or unstrained (sin colar). One of the earliest references to a drink called a Piña Colada, containing Rum, Coconut and Pineapple was from the April 16, 1950 edition of the New York Times: "Drinks in the West Indies range from Martinique's famous rum punch to Cuba's piña colada (rum, pineapple and coconut milk). Key west has a variety of lime swizzles and punches, and Granadians use nutmeg in their rum drinks." It is a delicious, fragrant and mellow drink in itself -- rapidly shaken up with ice, sugar, lime and white rum in delicate proportions.

El Dorado 151 Superior Overproof Rum (750ml)

Use with caution and keep away from open flames. It may light up your cocktails, literally. Include in Mai Tais, Rum Runners and punches.

Tasting note: Crystal clear with a silvery blush. Offers up notes of icing sugar, fairy floss and vanilla bean. A sweet entry belies the spiritous explosion, repeating the aromas with lip numbing intensity. At this ultra high ABV there’s a prickly, hot mouthfeel, the finish is bittersweet, more texture than flavour, and fairly short. Add to the punch bowl. 75.5% Alc./Vol.
El Ron Prohibido Reserva Solera 15 Rum (700ml)
    MEXICO
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

During the early 1700s, ships would come from Spain to the New World, bringing with them sweet raisin wine, which would be bottled and sold in Mexico. For the return trip, the barrels would be filled with “Chinguirito” (which was the name for Mexican rum). During the course of the voyage, the spirit would take on the flavours of the barrel and the sweet wine. As its popularity grew, wine-makers in the region began to see the spirit as a threat, so the King of Spain prohibited its production, hence the name El Ron Prohibido, “The Forbidden Rum”. That title has now been given a new lease of life. Solera aged in former Pedro Ximenez Spanish oak barrels, the oldest spirit in the blend is said to be around 15 years old. Like its younger sibling, it serves up notes of dark sugar and coffee with plenty of sweet dried fruit notes, tannic oak, black tea, creamy vanilla and toffee. 40% Alc./Vol.

El Ron Prohibido Reserva Solera 22 Anejo Rum (700ml)
    MEXICO
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Arguably the most full bodied rum in the El Ron Prohibido collection, the amber-coloured Solera 22 is derived from distillation in small copper pot stills, delivering a heavier spirit. Ageing takes place in a solera system. In this case, it's reported that the number 22 refers to the number of barrels and not the age of the liquid itself. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: sugar cane syrup, vanilla, caramel, peach, cocoa, almond, pecan, cinnamon, anise, cloves, wood, a hint of smoke. Flavor: peach, vanilla, nut (pecan, almond), clove, sugar syrup, caramel, mint. Aftertaste: wood, smoky tobacco.

    MEXICO
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Stemming from Mexico, El Ron Prohibido is matured in a 12-year old solera composed of barrels that previously held sweet raisin wine. The story goes that this rum used to be served to sailors in Mexico, but they all got so drunk that the captains made it illegal to serve! Hence the name 'El prohibido' - the forbidden rum. Nosing finds hints of balsamic over richer scents of candied orange, choc-chip cookie, praline, chico lollies and dilute molasses. Five minutes sweetens the aroma and shifts the emphasis to sticky date pudding. Light to medium bodied, off-dry delivery. Coffee milk, caramel fudge and lingering mocha flavours are nicely counterpointed by subtle bitter chocolate in the aftertaste. An atypical style with a likeable cocoa / mocha accent. Would work well with dessert cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottler: “In 1700, Spanish ships arrived to the colonies in the New World loaded with products from Spain. One popular product was sweet wine stored in barrels, which were later emptied after use. These empty barrels were filled with Chinguirito, which is rum that was produced in Mexico and shipped back to Spain, it absorbed wood flavours and aroma from the sweet wine barrels, which gave it very special characteristics. The resulting product became very popular in Spain and local producers saw it as a threat to the sales of their products. Consequently, the King of Spain prohibited the production of this rum in the New World. Chinguirito was also known as Habanero because the last stop on the way back to Spain from the New World was Habana, Cuba.”

Note: the wax seals are very brittle and may develop cracks and fragmentation during transport, as shown. This is not considered a packaging fault.

A blend of 40% pure juice rum (aged 12 years) and 60% molasses rum (aged 5 to 7 years), Emperor Deep Blue Palo Cortado Finish is a unique experiment in maturation. The rums were blended and then put into old Palo Cortado sherry casks for a further eight months. Once bottled, the rum was lowered sixty metres into an underwater cellar on Ushant Island off the coast of Brittany. According to the distillers, "underwater aged rums differentiate themselves from their counterparts by demonstrating more aromatic and fruity freshness, more balance and roundness, less acidity and the better preservation of some properties". For ten months at a temperature of 10 to 13°C, without oxygen and with six bars of pressure, the bottles acquire a unique appearance and arrive covered in marine concretions and sub-terranian 'cellar bloom'. The rum itself boasts notes of vanilla, caramelised fruits and sherry. 1250 bottles are on offer globally. 40% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.

Nicaragua is an often neglected producer of medium-bodied Rums from column stills that lend themselves well to aging. Thanks to the exceptional quality maintained by distillers like Flor de Cana, the region's rums have begun to gain well deserved international recognition. Flor de Cana is owned and produced by Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua, which was founded in 1890. Although the brand was not marketed commercially until 1937, it is today considered one of Latin America's most prestigious rums, and has won 72 awards, medals and commendations in the last five years.

Sourced from a single estate with the sugar cane grown on the distillery's own plantations in the Chichigalpa, then five times distilled, Flor de Cana 25 is a pinnacle of the range with only a small number of bottles allocated to the Australian market each year.

Tasting note: Bright polished copper. Seductive scents of light golden syrup, crème caramel and vanilla custard with later inhalations offering dates, fruit’n’nut chocolate, beeswax, pineapple pudding and more. Glides across the tongue with a graceful parade of sugars: crème caramel, vanilla wafer and dates followed by hints of caramelised pineapple and new leather. Retains a sense of vibrancy and freshness throughout. Deceptively long. Easily the most luxurious of the collection, without sacrificing complexity or elegance. 40% Alc./Vol.

Flor de Cana Centenario 18 Year Old Rum (1000ml)... More opulent than its younger siblings but consistent with the house style which is all about grace and restrained power. 40% Alc./Vol. 92 points

El Ron Prohibido Reserva Solera 12 Rum (700ml)... Stemming from Mexico, El Ron Prohibido is matured in a 12-year old solera composed of barrels that previously held sweet raisin wine. Polished mahogany colour. Mild balsamic over richer scents of candied orange, choc-chip cookie, praline, chico lollies and dilute molasses. 90 points

Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’.
