    Amrut Two Indies Rum (700ml)
    INDIA
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42.8%
This is a premium release for Amrut, blended with column and pot-distilled Caribbean and Indian rums, the latter made from Indian jaggery (an unrefined natural sweetener made by evaporating sugar cane juice that tastes like a cross between spicy molasses and buttery caramel). It comes labelled as a tribute to farmers of the two rum cultures – West Indies (Barbados, Guyana & Jamaica) and the East Indies.

Tasting note: Deep amber gold. Bold, fruity aromas of dates and brandy sauce, cinnamon, clove and vanilla with a touch of paprika heat. Light entry builds medium-bodied flavours of caramel, vanilla and fruit cake; tannin and pepper warmth thinning out the finish. No artificial flavours. 42.8% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Deep amber gold. Slightly sweeter and richer than Amrut’s “Two Indies” with hints of stewed plum and raisin through the caramels. Supple, well rounded, medium bodied and vanilla-heavy; gentle heat livens the finish, fading on a molasses note. Straightforward mixer. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Sweet Vanilla aromas and flavours of pistachio brittle and spices; Silky dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and a long, crystallized ginger, nutmeg and bubblegum spice accented finish.

Appleton Estate 15 Year Old Black River Casks Rum (700ml)
    JAMAICA
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

A tribute to the iconic Black River, the source of limestone-filtered water used to craft Appleton's rums, and according to some reports, timber from the crocodile infested mangroves south of the estate is used in some of the barrels (other sources say they're just 40-gallon American oak casks). Regardless, this blend of pot and column still rums was rated as one of the Top 100 Spirits of 2021 at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge and has received unanimous praise from rum lovers globally. 100% tropically aged in Jamaica. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Intoxicating bouquet of orange blossom, banana bread, crème brûlée, papaya, Sichuan peppercorn, and high-toned dunderfunk. Elegant and smooth on the palate, with vanilla bean, chocolate covered strawberries, and sweet smoke coming forward before a long, tropical finish dotted with tobacco takes over. 95 points - Extraordinary, Ultimate Recommendation - Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2021

...Anyone familiar with the Appleton house style will find plenty to enjoy here, kicking off with a rich nose that offers ample notes of allspice and cloves, extracted fruit notes, and a restrained hogo character that keeps everything in balance. The palate doubles down on the tiki spice elements, a base of red fruit and figs finding kinship with a healthy cinnamon character. Everything feels like it’s going great up to the finish, which comes across as a bit thin for a 15 year old rum. However, a nice clove character lingers after the fruit fades out.

It may be too expensive for regular use as a mixer, but would certainly excel as one. - drinkhacker.com

...Since I had never heard of Black River in Jamaica, I just had to look it up. It is on the southwest coast of Jamaica about 20 miles south of the Appleton Estate. Back when I visited Jamaica in 1988 and 1996, this part of Jamaica saw no tourism at all. This has obviously changed as there are now safari boats guiding tourists through these mangrove swamps. I gather that some very special wood from this area goes into making the casks that aged this rum. If you are expecting a heavy black char in this rum, you won't find it at all. It is a very good dry rum with the usual no sugar being added, but I still prefer their 8 Year Reserve Blend as my favorite from this island. - rumratings.com

Bacardi 8 Year Old Rum (700ml) - Older Bottling
    Caribbean,
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

This aged rum, we are told, was historically reserved for Don Facundo & the Bacardi family. It is a blend of Bacardi’s finest Caribbean rums, is aged at least eight years in carefully selected, small, mature oak casks , then masterfully blended to develop the rounded complexity of that only the finest aged rums attain to. Mixing Bacardi 8 year old is strictly taboo.

Other reviews... Rich copper color. Sweet toffee, roasted nuts, and brown spice aromas are very sophisticated and deep. A vibrant entry leads to a supple, glycerous and lightly sweet full-bodied palate of chocolate, warm caramel, toasted nuts, and rich spices with a touch of cigar box and lacquer for complexity. Finishes with a long, smoky caramel and spice fade. Fantastic and a must for cigars.

The Barbados edition is just one in BBR's first batch of value, entry-level rums which also includes Jamaica, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Predictably, it hails from the acclaimed Foursquare distillery. A blend of pot and column distilled components bottled at an accessible 40.5%, expect a lighter style with attractive notes of honey, ripe banana and melon.

Other reviews... I’m judging the rum alongside something like the 3 year old Neptune Rum and Doorly’s 5 Year Old. My initial impressions based on the price point and nose is that this is likely a blend of rums aged between 3-5 years. With the majority of that time (say less a year) being in Barbados. Sipped this is a pretty spicy affair. Lots of oak spice, ginger and more than a touch of bitterness. It’s a very dry rum. The initial sip is quite deceptive as further sips of this rum reveal a lot more of the rum. There is a lot more sweetness on the second and third sip with some really nice notes of toffee, dark chocolate and some cashew nuts. Finish wise it’s a little short in terms of flavour. The oak and spiced linger for a fair period but the tastier aspects of the rum quickly fade. All in all it’s a nicely balanced glass of rum but it isn’t anywhere near as complex as something from the Exceptional Cask Series. In terms of profile it is probably closest to Doorly’s 5 and 8. It’s unfussy, uncomplicated and a fairly straightforward, easy going Barbados rum. - thefatrumpirate.com

Better known as an independent bottler of high quality Scottish grains and malts, Berry Bros. & Rudd's collection now extends into rums, representing a range of countries from Jamaica and Barbados to Mauritius and Fiji. These can vary greatly in smell and taste: spicy or fruity, white or dark, smoky or bright. Though broadly speaking, for BBR, there are three distinctive styles which have been shaped by historical colonial forces: British, French and Spanish. Rums made in English-speaking regions, such as Barbados and Belize, tend to be heavier and richer in style. Those made in French-speaking areas, such as Haiti, are likely to be leafy and smoky; while Spanish-speaking countries, such as Nicaragua and Guatemala, are likely to produce a lighter, brighter style of rum. In this example, the spirit offers an intriguingly restrained nose, with notes of baklava, crepe bandage and marginally undercooked arrowroot biscuits, with maybe a hint of curry leaf. The palate is dominated by sugar cane, although pleasingly dry on a finish where any wood is beautifully smothered in cane honey. Mojitos all round, please! 40.5% Alc./Vol.

Black Gate Distillery Ranga Rum (700ml)
    New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $135. 00
    Bottle
    $1620.00 Dozen
    ABV: 51%
A new Aussie rum from the team at Black Gate, better known for their cracking single malts. This is produced from molasses in a traditional copper pot still, then matured for two years in a second fill 100 litre ex sherry cask. A final twist sees the rum finished in a 100 litre ex ginger beer cask, pushing this into spiced rum territory. 161 bottles on offer.

Tasting note: Brilliant gold. Ideal clarity. Nosing finds an amalgam of golden syrup, ginger bread and green banana. Entry is hollow, subdued, understated. Builds to an intense, off-dry ginger beer attack that pretty much eclipses any trace of rum, excepting the spirit heat. Rounds out like a double barrel Dark'n'Stormy, which is essentially what this cask experiment is. Ginger beer defines the aftertaste. Great if that's the sort of thing you like, but the ginger will be over bearing for Rum purists. 51% Alc./Vol.

    HAITI
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
One of a handful of rums we've been able to source from Haiti. Influenced by the French agricole tradition, this lighter coloured style is still big on flavour. All ex bourbon oak matured, it's almost certain Cadenhead's sourced it from that very famous distillery, Barbancourt.

Notes from the bottler... Nose: Minty sweet notes along with a lively hit of eucalyptus at first but this is soon tempered by a rich sweet fruity note. Palate: Sweet and very rich to start, some tropical fruits and all spice mingle with a rich oily middle palate of soft peaches and honey. Clean soft fruity finish, summer on the beach comes to mind as this well balanced rum finishes its dance across the palate. 46% Alc./Vol.

    GUYANA
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
The firm of William Cadenhead Ltd, Wine and Spirit Merchants, was founded in 1842 and is Scotland's oldest independent bottler. The company was in the ownership of the same family until taken over by J & A Mitchell & Co.Ltd in 1972, the proprietors of Springbank distillery. Today, Cadenhead is probably the only Company in the world that holds extensive stocks of old matured-in-oak Demerara Rum (though they're also legendary for bottling excellent single cask, cask-strength, non-chill-filtered whiskies). The company places particular emphasis on the individuality of each bottling and bottle only a single cask of Rum at one time.

Guyana is justly famous for its rich, heavy Demerara Rums, named for a local river. Demerara Rums can be aged for extended periods (25-year-old varieties are on the market) and are frequently used for blending with lighter Rums from other regions. Neighboring Surinam and French Guyana produce similar full-bodied Rums.

This is a big, old fashioned style, without being especially dark - no colouring has been added. In Cadenhead's own words, expect a rum that's "... Creamy and dry at the front but opens to a sweet crisp fruity tone as the dram crosses the palate, Victoria sponge and fresh cream then a little honeycomb chocolate with peppery sweet spices. .Finish Quite rich thicker than expected with some rather nice vanilla & spice." 46% Alc./Vol.

1996 Caroni Extra Strong 21 Year Old Cask Strength Rum (700ml)
    TRINIDAD
    $350. 00
    Bottle
    $4200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.18%
While the Caribbean has a long history of rum, a significant part of this history has been irretrievably lost. Trinidad once boasted more than 50 distilleries. The number dwindled to eight by the 1950s and now only Angostura remains. The decline was mostly due to the demise of the local sugar industry (Trinidad now imports molasses for rum production).
This increasingly rare bottling represents a small part of that era.

The Caroni Estate Distillery (est. 1918), closed in 2003 and is now sadly, demolished. It was built on the site of an old sugar factory and for a period supplied rums to the British Navy. At the time, there were some eight to ten other sugar factories operating, each producing different types (and qualities) of rums, bought up by merchants and sold to rum shops all over the island.

Caroni gradually increased the quality of its distilling process, moving on from its original cast iron still to a wooden coffey still, until 1945 when they acquired a copper still which was followed by a single column in 1957 and then a four column Gerb Herman still in 1980. Rums from the estate gained a reputation for being particularly flavoursome.

After the 2003 closure, some Caroni casks made their way back to the U.K. We're pleased to be able to offer an allocation of what is unquestionably a true collector's and connoisseur's delight. Once these are gone, they're gone forever. It's also one of the oldest Caroni's to hit our shelves, bottled at natural strength.

Tasting note: Polished copper. Wafts of alcohol give way to profound aromas of vanilla bean, raw sugar, molasses and sticky date. The massive attack manages to balance all of the above in a slow-motion cascade, the sugars weaving in and out of the encroaching oak in a sustained, bittersweet sensation. Another side of Caroni, demonstrating just how well its rums can age. 57.18% Alc./Vol.
    Chairman's Reserve Legacy Rum (700ml)
    SAINT LUCIA
    $105. 00
    Bottle
    $1260.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Saint Lucia Distillers (SLD) have been busy with new releases, and the latest installment is this tropically aged, 5-6 year old molasses-based rum labelled 'Legacy'. Rums from both the John Dore and Vendome Pot Stills and the Coffey Column Still are employed. If you're a bit of a rum maven, the exact breakdown is as follows: John Dore 2 -7.5 years old (16%); Pot Still Vendome 7 years old (4%); Coffey Column Still RR104 marque 5.5 years old (72%), plus a final addition of Pot Still John Dore 2-5 year old rums distilled from sugar cane juice (8%). The percentages represent their contribution to the overall blend. All the components were aged in ex-bourbon barrels.

The addition of a little sugarcane juice distillate was a tradition of Laurie Barnard's since his first cane harvest from the plantation that he established around the distillery. That was also in order to isolate the signature proprietary yeast that Chairman’s Reserve is now famous for. It's an appropriate touch, given that 'Legacy' is a tribute to Barnard, the “Chairman” who created the iconic brand. He was known as an early innovator. While other distilleries were purchasing column stills to increase production, Barnard was investing in eclectic barrel types, small pot stills, a proprietary yeast strain and sugarcane. Legacy has been well recieved in the rum community and is considered one of the better values in SLD's portfolio.

Other reviews... On the sip, it is reminiscent of Chairman’s Reserve Original but it has an extra layer of refinement and complexity. The entry has a spicy, slightly grassy/floral note which again reminds me of pine cones and a touch of pot pourri. The vanilla comes through afterward taking you through to a mid palate which has a note of spearmint. It’s very fresh with a spicy hit of oak and some tobacco notes. The fruity notes come more in the way of coconut and some banana. Baking spices and notes of sweet shortcrust pastry.... This is amazing value for money as an everyday sipper and a fantastic introduction to Saint Lucia Distillers output. I think Laurie Barnard would have absolutely loved this rum. I dare say you might quite like it as well. At this price and value for money it’s a real no-brainer for me. 4.5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

...It’s a quite dry rum, a touch peppery on the nose, with a clear hogo edge and ample notes of dried tropical fruits. Some brown banana and a bit of spice make their presence known in time. The palate finds an enduring dryness interrupted modestly by notes of apple, brown sugar, and gingerbread. It isn’t until the finish where a light sweetness finally makes its presence felt, evoking banana bread and a spray of baking spices. Legacy may lack the effusive depth of, say, Chairman’s Forgotten Casks bottling, but it’s a solid, mixable, old-school rum no matter which way you look at it. - drinkhacker.com

Notes from the producers... Mahogany hue in the glass. Pineapple, banana, and vanilla on the nose. Intense grilled tropical fruit and spice on the palate persist throughout a long wonderful finish.

Clairin is better known in its un-aged form. This follow up from last year's 'Communal' bottling changes that. Blended from Velier's partners (Sajous, Vaval, Casimir and Le Rochers), it was matured for approximately two years in ex-rum casks from Bielle, Caroni and Mount Gay, as well as ex-whisky casks from Benriach, Widow Jane and Buffalo Trace distillieries. Bottled in Haiti for La Maison du Whisky, the result is fruity, floral, spicy, herbaceous and honeyed, so typically complex. 49.3% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.
    Cockspur Fine Rum (700ml)
    BARBADOS
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.5%
Cockspur is a blended rum brand created by Valdemar Hanschell who in 1884 settled in Barbados and founded a chandlery which supplied ships traveling the Caribbean with rope, sails, salt, fruit, meat and rum.

Today, Cockspur is produced from Barbadian molasses, a unique yeast culture and water sourced from an underwater spring, each said to contribute to it's distinctive character. The 'mash' is distilled in two types of still, the 'continuous' or column still and the traditional copper pot still. Both stills are employed to add complexity, as the column still produces a fine, light, elegant rum whilst copper pot stills produce a 'heartier' spirit. Maturation takes place in small ex-bourbon American oak barrels.

Other reviews... The color of apple juice, this rum has a warm, fruity scent and a light smokiness. Although boozy up front, that fades out to a pleasing tropical fruit and sweet vanilla finish. Glug the bottle into a punch to smooth out the rough edges.Tasted 2011.

...Golden amber color. Fruity and lightly floral tropical aromas of coconut, banana, and dried pineapple have a buttery toffee note and follow through on a supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with great depth and balance. Finishes with a long, peppery and spicy oak, mocha, coconut, and limestone accented fade. A delicious and vibrant dark rum.

Compagnie des Indes is a French bottler, based in Beaune and managed by Florent Beuchet. Rums are selected for their typicity and regional distinction, then bought back to France for maturation. Most are bottled without the addition of caramel colour or sugars.

The Latino edition is created from a blend of Central American rums, (60% from Guatemala) with a touch of Guyanese rum as well as some from Trinidad and Barbados. The rums were matured in x Bourbon casks for five years.

Tasting note: Bright gold. Almost floral with softly spoken aromas of wafer biscuit, custard and light sponge cake. Medium bodied, silky and graceful in the mouth offering flavours of dried mango, banana cake, tea biscuits and a mouthcoating, salivating, creamy-soda-like burst to finish. Moreish. 40% Alc./Vol.

Dead Reckoning Port Broadside Single Blended Jamaica Rum (700ml)
    JAMAICA
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Dead Reckoning is offering their first edition of 'Port Broadside', a funky but mellow blend of three low-ester Jamaican rums (Hampden, Worthy Park and New Yarmouth; pot stills and a column still respectively). Born, bred and married in the tropics for three years, it was then honeymooned in the heat of Adelaide in a Seppeltsfield Tawny Cask that had held port continuously for 120 years. There was so much port infused into the grain that the cask was said to be almost 'gooey' inside. Specifically blended to exhibit the funk that Jamaican rums are famous for, it includes low ester ‘marques’ as stated on the label – all of them amongst the lowest of their distillery. The upshot is that this is ester-forward rum (it is Jamaican, after all!) but not overstated or over-the-top hogo, yet it's evocative enough to transport you to the Caribbean in a way that only all-natural Jamaican rum can. Overripe tropical fruit, moist fruit cake, dilute molasses, sarsaparilla and liquorice bullets slowly gather definition on the nose. In the mouth, it errs on the bittersweet-dry side rather than being sugary and fat; the flavour concentration is impressive at 50% delivering a slow-motion surge of papaya, semi-ripe banana and raisin slice with hints of muscat as the sugars gain ground at the finish. Skilfully balanced and with fabulous persistence, the value for money is high (taste this against Velier's bottlings and it compares more than favourably). There's also ample funk giving it an emphatically Jamaican character. As with other Dead Reckoning releases, nothing has been added and the rum comes with zero chill filtration. 360 bottles were decanted in September 2023. For the non-sailors out there, a Broadside is a firing of all the guns from one side of a warship. 50% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the importers... Nose: The nose on this really evolves over time. There’s waves of mashed banana, juicy fruit chewing gum, creaming soda and a sultana-laden bread and butter (or is it rice?) pudding and custard! Palate: Masses of firepower with a rich and syrupy mouthfeel yet there’s also a crisp and dry backbone that makes itself known with just a touch of astringency that balances out the sweetness. [The column still component plus the tawny barrel at work there I’m sure!] Masses of fruit salad, lots of sweet and fragrant spices and stewed fruit to boot! Finish: Lovely, long and utterly divine. Burnt liquorice, sarsaparilla-spider, caramel and sweet banana custard. Another amazing release from the master of the dry-aged finish. Sweet and slightly funky on the nose, but takes a port tack to the dry side on the palate before rolling back to round sweetness in the finish. Mellow and funky like a groovy summer breeze, carrying the rhythm of a laid-back Funkadelic tune. Complex as quadratics, but easy as 1, 2, 3.

    Diplomatico Reserva Rum (700ml)
    VENEZUELA
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
When this rum debuted in 1989 it took Venezuela by storm. 840,000 bottles were sold there alone in the first 24 months. It is a 50 / 50 amalgam of heavy pot still vs lighter column still rums, aged for up to eight years. A step up in richness and sweetness from the Anejo, this also ups the ante aromatically.

Tasting notes: Deep copper colour with deep straw hue. Deep and luxurious nose at first delivering coffee, chocolate and orange cake, then with time in the glass maple syrup and spice notes begin to dominate. The palate shows restrained sweetness amid a plethora of dark chocolate and milk-coffee like flavours, the maple ebbs and flows. Throughout, a fruity/floral undertone keeps the palate fresh. A feather-weight spicy surge at the finish follows through to a long, drying, light chocolate & orange-cake aftertaste with hints of hay emerging. So clean and relaxed. Delicious on its own or dedicated to upmarket cocktails.40.0% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Copper color. Aromas of waxy honeycomb, mocha gelato, and chocolate graham crackers with a satiny, fruity-yet-dry medium body and a smooth, creamy latte, toffee, mineral, and banana gelatin candy finish. Very smooth and tasty.

    VENEZUELA

    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Few people will be aware that as well as being home to the famous rum based medicinal bitters, Angostura, Venezuela makes a number of well-respected barrel-aged golden and dark Rums. Local producers say the combination of tropical humidity and cool winds that bathe Venezuela's sugar-cane fields helps to age the rum faster than in other countries. As José Mandry, president of the Venezuelan Alcohols Chamber that groups most of the country's rum makers says, 'Venezuela is a blessed land situated at the north of South America where the winds don't tear us up but gently rock us, and gently rock our rums.' The change in temperature from day to night stimulates interaction between the alcohol distilled from cane juice and the barrels, enhancing the taste.

This bottling is the ideal starting point for your experiences with Diplomatico, or even Rum in general. The majority (95%) input from lighter, column still rums and the average of four years in barrel translates into a lighter profile that's as versatile as it is accessible.

Tasting notes: Very pale straw colour with water like hue. Slightly restrained, drier styled aromatics offer a top note of vanilla bean above iced coffee with malted milk, honey, a whiff of coconut oil, a sprinkling of cinnamon and a subtle grassy undertone adding freshness. Soft creamy palate delivers medium dry flavours of malt, vanilla, sweet spice, and a touch of mocha rounded off with a spicy flourish. Perfect balance. Clean, dry finish. Reasonable length with an aftertaste of mocha and spice. The leaner, lighter and more elegant rum of the collection. 40.0% Alc./Vol.

Other Reviews.... The nosing passes find layers of honey, old leather, palm oil, old oak and molasses. The palate entry explodes with succulent tastes of oak, vanilla cream, and honey; the midpalate offers tastes of cookie spices, raisins, dates, and dark chocolate. Ends up balanced, correctly sweet, and elegant. A fabulous deal. - P.P. (5/1/2007) - 90-95: Superb/Highly Recommended Wine Enthusiast Magazine

...Gold amber color. Aromas of toffeed nuts, dried pineapple and papaya, mocha, vanilla bean, and rich brown spices follow through on a smooth, velvety entry to an off-dry medium-to-full body with honey, cherry cola, and tropical fruit salad notes. Finishes with nice polished wood and spice notes and a balancing wave of pepper and wet stone minerality. A little on the sweet side, but extremely inviting and drinkable. Note: the wax seals are very brittle and may develop cracks and fragmentation during transport, as shown. This is not considered a packaging fault.

A blend of 40% pure juice rum (aged 12 years) and 60% molasses rum (aged 5 to 7 years), Emperor Deep Blue Palo Cortado Finish is a unique experiment in maturation. The rums were blended and then put into old Palo Cortado sherry casks for a further eight months. Once bottled, the rum was lowered sixty metres into an underwater cellar on Ushant Island off the coast of Brittany. According to the distillers, "underwater aged rums differentiate themselves from their counterparts by demonstrating more aromatic and fruity freshness, more balance and roundness, less acidity and the better preservation of some properties". For ten months at a temperature of 10 to 13°C, without oxygen and with six bars of pressure, the bottles acquire a unique appearance and arrive covered in marine concretions and sub-terranian 'cellar bloom'. The rum itself boasts notes of vanilla, caramelised fruits and sherry. 1250 bottles are on offer globally. 40% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.

A blend of column distilled, molasses-based rums from Gray’s Distillery, Mauritius and Foursquare Rum Distillery, Barbados. The Gray’s component is aged in a combination of French Limousin Oak and ex-Cognac casks for ten years. It's then shipped to Barbados and blended with rum aged in ex-bourbon casks for a minimum of eight years. Richard Seale and Co. at Foursquare distillery oversee the bottling. The name references Olaudah Equiano, an African born writer, abolitionist and traveller who financed his activities (partly) via the trading of rum. He was enslaved in Africa, taken to Barbados, and eventually settled in the UK.

Billed as the first 'Afro-Carribbean ' rum, the brand are donating 5% of profits to the Equiano foundation in his honour.

Tasting note: Deep amber gold. Medium sweet aromas of rock candy, date cake and golden syrup. A supple, rounded, fruity rum, with graceful, semi-sweet flavours of pineapple pudding, cocoa, mango lassi and light molasses through the aftertaste. Excellent length and balance. Make no mistake, Foursquare is fast becoming one of the brightest stars in the rum firmament. Globally, the Exceptional Cask series continues to garner all the right kind of attention, which means they don't last long on retailer's shelves. Most are allocated, some are now been offered via ballot only, and several are unlikely to ever make it to Australia. Number eighteen in the ECS collection is a pot & column distilled Single Blended Rum, and the second ECS release to feature rum aged in Zinfandel wine casks (the first was the now sought-after ECS Mark IV offered back in 2016 at a lower 43%). The understated appearance of these bottlings belies their generally outstanding quality. This edition was bottled in 2021 at 48% with zero additives and no chill filtration. Very limited stocks.

Other reviews... The initial sip is very fruity – lots of Strawberry, Dark Cherries and heaps of Raspberry. This move into the mid palate where more oak and spice kicks in. Warming gentle Vanilla and a touch of Cinnamon. The mid palate leads to a finish, which is long and lingering. Lots of Raspberry and Dark Plums mingle with some acidic and tart Orange Zest. There is a bit more “woody-ness” on the finish – some tobacco, cocoa and some pencil shavings. For me it drinks way beyond its ABV and has a remarkable depth and complexity. It’s dangerously drinkable and all in all a pretty stunning rum. I’ve really enjoyed this and I hope I can find another…….sadly unlike its name its been rather easily removed from most retailers… 5 Stars - the fatrumpirate.com

Doorly's and Foursquare Rums are made at the Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados and fall under the banner of R.L. Seale & Co, one of Barbados' oldest trading companies. Currently owned and operated by the 4th generation of the Seale family, (who have a history of rum making in Barbados dating back to 1820), Richard Seale is the Master Distiller & Blender. He continues to operate from the south eastern quarter of the island in St. Phillip in a distillery built on the site of a former sugar factory that dates back to 1650s. The modern company dates to the 1920s, when Reginald Leon Seale set up a distribution business in the island’s capital, Bridgetown. The company’s success saw it acquire brands such as ESA Fields and Doorly’s. In 1995 they opened the Foursquare distillery, installing a double retort pot still and a three-column continuous still. The first spirit was produced in 1996. Introduced in 2008, the Exceptional Cask Selections are exemplars of the finest rums they produce.

"...young Ardbeg in Jamaica." - whiskyfun.com

HLCF stands for "Hampden Light Continental Flavored", and is one of the marks that are produced at Hampden Estate for those rums with a high concentration of esters, i.e. from 400 to 700 gr / hlpa - depending on your source. Despite its potency, the profile here is relatively relaxed. Fruit-forward in the initial inhalations, moving from ripe papaya to overripe bananas, countered by a bitter dark chocolate note, the theme continues in a supple delivery with an unmistakably Jamaican stamp; dried pineapple, mango chews, pepper heat and a mild spike of alcohol are followed by residual notes of candle wax and struck match as well as more creamy mango and 'funk' that serves to heighten the experience. Fully tropically aged for four years with nothing added before bottling at 60%, it's another wonderfully expressive Hampden that resonates a sense of place. Very limited stocks.

Other reviews... There used to be an excellent 7 yo 'Overproof' at 60% vol. but it looks like this new one's lost any age statements. (UPDATE it's a 4 yo 2017). HLCF means 500-700 grams esters per HLPA. Colour: white wine. Nose: once again, this has far more brine and acetone, more earth as well, olive oil, tarragon, a really salty and acidic style on the nose but at 60% it's hard to get a proper full picture. With water: a lovely earthiness and some big rubber. New wellies, all sizes, plus touches of strawberry gums, a thing that's related to some yeasts and that would go away over the years, I've been told. Nutshell, pears and strawberries mean really young spirit. Mouth (neat): very pungent, very salty, with echoes of the most extreme finos de Jerez. With water: pure brine, liquorice, lemon and tar, perhaps a little minimalistic but we do enjoy Bauhaus sprits. Finish: long and even saltier. Rubbery signature, with tinned anchovies. Comments: young Ardbeg in Jamaica. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Followers of Hampden will already know that the LROK marque indicates a kind of 'average' esteriness from 150 to 400 g esters/hlpa. (In reality, most Hampdens are pretty estery anyway, so what you'll get here should be typical - aromatic, funky, fruity stuff). Weighing in at 314.8 gr/hLPA, 'The Younger' is only slightly down on its older sibling. But keep in mind, this is less than half its price. Expected to sell fast. Havana Club is produced according to careful Cuban tradition from sugar cane of the highest quality. After fermentation of the molasses, called mieles in Cuba (literally honey), an extremely slow distillation process in columns specially designed for Havana Club produces a powerful and aromatic liquor known as aguardiente. This young liquor is aged in white oak casks and then blended with fresh sugarcane distillate to produce ron fresco (fresh rum) which is then successively aged and blended again several times until the maestros roneros (master blenders) are satisfied. The choice of barrels is crucial, as the wood gives colour, aroma and complexity to the liquor. The entire range of Havana Club is aged naturally, with no artificial acceleration – the best guarantee of excellent quality. This is a versatile aged rum making it perfect for the most genuinely Cuban “Cuba Libre” cocktail. Anejo Especial is elaborated with rums aged in oak barrels and perfectly balanced by the Maestro Ronero, who selects each component for the final blending.

Tasting note: Bright gold colour. Nosing yields powerful aromas of coffee bean, vanilla wafer biscuit and cream. The palate is sweet and medium to full-bodied with honey, nuts and butterscotch flavours. Turns dry at mid-palate balancing nicely before the sweetness kicks in again with a subtle brown sugar, mocha aftertaste. Sweet and straightforward. Good choice for mixing with citrus juices. 40% Alc./Vol.

As Dave Russell from www.rumgallery.com points out, Australians should feel privileged to have access to the fine Rums of Cuba. "US relations with Cuba is easing slightly, but more change is needed to end the stalemate of the past half-century, that prevents Americans from traveling freely to Cuba or even purchasing Cuban rum in the States. Most American rum lovers just don’t know what they’re missing. One sip, and you’ll understand why Havana Club Cuban Barrel Proof is one of the leading brands in the Caribbean and Europe. Travel to the Caribbean or Europe and have someone treat you to Havana Club rum, particularly the fine Cuban Barrel Proof. Trust me, you won’t turn commie, but you will gain an appreciation for the true taste of traditional Cuban rum craftsmanship. Just don’t bring any home - yet!

"Havana Club’s Maestro Don José P. Navarro Campa starts with delicate light, sipping rums aged in extra-old white oak barrels to impart an amber hue and smoothness, then combines them with more complex aged rums. RnD suspect’s it is at this stage the “barrel proof” is also established. The final blend is rested in specially selected finishing casks that breathe new life into the old rum, giving it character and added complexity. According to the distiller, the final product is “bottled straight from the cask.”
