Flavoured Vodka
Flavoured Vodkas have been produced for centuries. Initially, extra ingredients were added to mask the harsh taste of rough cuts in early distillates. Nowadays flavouring vodka is a mark of the distiller's skill. The best examples offer a pure, non-confected representation of the key note flavour - not so easily achieved, as many fall into the 'too sweet' trap. Flavoured vodkas are now in vogue with several celebrity affiliated brands leaving a mark on popular culture. Their convenience and versatility as mixers means there's a steady demand, and the flavour range currently available is better than ever. Click here to learn more about Vodka.

Ursus Roter Sloe Berry Flavoured Vodka (1000ml)NETHERLANDS$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 21%Sloes (prunus spinosa) are the blue black fruit of the wild black thorn and cluster like tiny plums in hedgerows and thickets deep in the European countryside. When the berries have been softened by the late autumn sunshine, the best fruit is picked and then steeped in alcohol to make delicious flavoured spirits.
URSUS is the Latin word for ‘bear’. The brand name emphasizes the Nordic heritage of the original formula. In the early 20th century, URSUS Vodka was produced by a traditional Icelandic family of bootleggers. At that time, alcohol distillation was prohibited in Iceland. Nevertheless, they succeeded in perfecting their recipe. In the early 1990s, the URSUS Vodka Company in the Netherlands obtained the original URSUS Vodka recipe from its Icelandic owners and introduced the drink to a broader market. The subtle sweetness of sloe berries results in a delicate, very mixable vodka drink. Enjoy URSUS Roter straight, on the rocks or mixed in your favourite soft drinks or juices. - Notes partially sourced from Ursus Vodka.
Tasting notes: Deep crimson and brown brick color. Fruity, spicy, slightly smoky dark berry pie and light molasses aromas. A soft, buoyant entry leads to a round, fruity medium-to full-bodied palate with tart, ripe dark berry, mineral oil, and wet stone flavors. Finishes with a nice melange of berries and mineral notes with no burn. Pure, deliciously ripe and tart dark fruit riding on top of a smooth, minerally vodka. Superb and fun.21%Alc/Vol

Vincent Van Gogh Double Espresso Flavoured VodkaSchiedam, NETHERLANDS$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 35%The complete range of Van Gogh Vodkas are produced under contract at Dirkzwager Distillery, in Schiedam Holland, a family owned company established 125 years ago. Besides producing their own brands, the distillery also produce many private labels, including Van Gogh, various vodka-based Liqueurs and Amsterdam vodkas. Dirkzwager Distilleries Master Distiller, Mr. Tim Vos, handcrafts Van Gogh Vodka in small batches using the finest grains - primarily a combination of wheat and a little corn and barley. The vodka is distilled twice in column stills and then a third time in a traditional pot still to produce a spirit of the highest refinement. The copper pot still takes the "bite" out of the alcohol, making the vodka particularly smooth. Purified water which is considered superior over distilled water is employed. Mr. Vos believes that when water is distilled, it takes the character out and the water becomes a liquid without identity. Mr.Vos's desire and passion to continuously achieve perfection is evident in his award-winning vodkas, all made through this same multiple distillation process.
For those in love with the standard Espresso bottling, this is the next step with double the caffeine content equivalent to three espresso shots.
Tasting note: Slightly viscous, deep transluscent, burnt umber appearance with a deep mauve blush. Smells like ‘chico’ lollies (a chocolate variation on the jelly baby). Second pass brings out more of the coffee-mocha naturalness with hints of milk chocolate. The palate repeats the aromas and maintains an appropriate balance between the sweet / gently bitter aspects although more bitterness would be desirable. Finishes clean, dry and mildly spicy. 35% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The supple bouquet has a strong coffee bean-like quality with additional scents of cocoa, road tar, roasted chestnut and wood smoke. The palate entry and midpalate are nicely mellow with plenty of rich espresso character. Finishes smoked and tar-like, with the coffee taking a back seat. P.P. (10/1/2006)

The brand received a Five-Star rating (the highest recommendation) from the highly respected "Spirit Journal." Shortly after, the "Wine Enthusiast" rated the Vodka 94/100 commenting: "The nose is rich and full, and the body is big and lush with a wonderful "bread-dough" quality that gives this vodka character and an oily sweetness. The finish is long, leaving the mouth with a final burst of pepperiness, and the oilness of the vodka seems to coat the throat. This vodka makes a stylish martini. 40% Alc./Vol."

Van Gogh's patented square-shouldered bottles are frosted white, etched and feature Vincent Van Gogh's paintings. These are finished in multiple silk-screened colours, and can be viewed in three dimensions. The magnifying effect of the vodka makes the pictures larger, creating a different scene when the bottle is turned.
In perpetual pursuit of the perfect Martini for any ocassion, the Van Gogh company has compiled over 6,700 martini recipes for any mood (this number is soon to reach 10,000), available at www.vangoghvodka.com and also available by CD. These recipes include the Van Gogh Vodka flavours which are now also available in Australia: Citroen, Oranje, Wild Appel, Vanilla, Dutch Chocolate, Raspberry, Pineapple, Melon and Coconut - all made with the highest quality196 proof distilled alcohol and double-infused during a 6-week long process. The bold-tasting, all-natural flavours of these vodkas allow Van Gogh Vodkas to create the greatest number and best-tasting martinis of any vodka.
Like all other Van Gogh Vodkas, this is an all natural melon vodka. One bottle is made from 20 melons resulting in watermelon overtones with some sweetness from the honeydew followed by a lingering taste of cantaloupe.
Tasting note: Clear. Offers a bouquet of very ripe melon / honeydew that's bordering on over ripe and a little on the confected side. The soft, sweet palate possesses good concentration, but like the nose tends towards being over-sweet. Could be better balanced. While this is not the freshest expression in the range, you'd still buy this before sickly sweet concoctions like Midori. 35% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Lovely, balanced, pleasantly ripe fragrance of melon; as with all Van Gogh flavored vodkas, the key aromatic element is the underlying balance and subtlety. Palate entry is plump, viscous and reeks of ripe melon; the midpalate displays a lovely oiliness and viscosity that underpins the flavor of freshly harvested and cut melon. Concludes sweetly and mildly.

Van Gogh Pineapple Vodka is made with the juiciest pineapples sourced from the tropics.
Tasting note: Pours crystal clear with a slight viscosity evident. First pass is overly confected and not particularly appealing. Second pass releaves with a scent more resembling fresh sliced, very ripe pineapple. The palate is broad and soft, lacking the cleansing acidity one associates with this fruit. The finish offers a mild zing that goes some way to redeeming the mid palate. 35% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Bouquet is like freshly cut pineapple. Palate entry is sweet and fruity; by the midpalate it's the viscous texture that's as attractive as the intense pineapple flavor. Finishes sweet and fruity.

Persistent aftertaste. Like a quality kirsch brandy with all the rough edges smoothed out. 35% Alc./Vol.
Other Reviews...The aroma is deeply cherry-like, ripe, tart and fresh. The palate entry goes very sour at first but at midpalate the flavor becomes noticeably sweeter as the fruit pulp and juice elements move to the forefront. Finishes juicy, medium-weighted, and moderately sweet. A flavored vodka clinic.
90-95 points. Superb/Highly Recommended. - www.wineenthusiast.com...A small-batch vodka from master distiller Tim Vos, this pretty pink spirit with a mild cherry-almond scent is surprisingly big and sweet on the palate, with a touch of bitterness. The Acai berry (pronounced ah-SIGH-ee), is one of the most nutritional food sources known to man, and while small in size, packs a nutritional punch greater than any other food in the world. Derived from the Acai Palm Trees in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil, the berry itself is mostly seed (in fact, about 90%), covered in a small amount of pulp. They have a berry flavour with a subtle chocolatey after taste.
Other reviews... The bouquet offers delightfully tart fragrances of ripe blueberry, blackberry and black cherry, with intriguing side notes of cocoa bean, textile and green vegetation. Van Gogh Espresso Vodka utilizes Columbian coffee beans, which are then infused with premium grain alcohol. This is a quick and thrifty solution for creating a classic Espresso Martini.
Tasting note: Crystal clear appearance. What a compelling opening sniff! Equates to dipping your nose into a bag of freshly ground coffee. Stunning purity. The initial impact subsides, but only marginally, with the aromas turning towards milk chocolate and gently toasted coconut. Retains excellent intensity even after ample aeration, as many other flavoured vodkas don’t. A soft, silky entry leads into a mid palate burst of creamy coffee flavours that just avoids been overly sweet. A subtle spirit warmth adds depth. Dries towards the finish with a persistent cafe-creme, marzipan note returning into the aftertaste. A stunning effort! 35% Alc./Vol.

Van Gogh's patented square-shouldered bottles are frosted white, etched and feature Vincent Van Gogh's paintings. Van Gogh Mango Vodka incorporates natural Indonesian mangos infused with premium grain alcohol utilizing a unique double infusion method. Give it a whirl in your summer cocktails!
Other reviews... The initial whiffs find an authentic aroma of just-picked mango freshness; aeration time brings out even deeper levels of amazingly genuine fruitiness and tart mango perfume. The entry is ripe and sweet, then by midpalate the flavor turns tart, acidic, yet completely true to the source. Finishes sweet, lean, and savory.

Centuries ago the Dutch traded for the best cocoa beans in the world. In Holland, the Frisian cows produce rich milk from the green grass grown in the lowlands. After combining these two ingredients, Van Gogh Dutch Chocolate Vodka stands up to the centuries old chocolate reputation, a rich tradition reflecting quality and taste.
Tasting notes: Clear with a faint straw / yellow blush. Generous bouquet includes notes of honeycomb, milk chocolate and caramel. A silk like texture is accompanied by cocoa and caramel, fading a little fast. Finishes medium dry with a subtle praline aftertaste. 35% Alc./Vol.

Van Gogh Wild Appel Vodka is made from wild apples grown in abandoned apple orchards in Holland. Because they are wild apples, the apples are "harder" containing less sugar. Wild apples also yield a more intense flavour.
Tasting notes: Clear, slightly viscous appearance. Sweet scents of apple concentrate / apple juice becoming toffee apple-like with exposure. The toffee apple repeats on the palate which is disappointingly broad and overly sweet with hints of caramel. Finish is more naturally apply with the fruit freshness evident, but could be better expressed. Aftertaste of very ripe apple accompanied by a gently warming spirit. 35% Alc./Vol.

In this curious new release, Van Gogh have recreated the iconic flavours of peanut butter and raspberry jelly and combined it with their world class vodka base. This is sure to be the talking point at your next party.
Tasting note: Crystal clear appearance. Captivates from the get go with its authentic fresh cracked peanut / pistachio nut aroma that’s not overly sweet. Loses little vibrancy with time in the glass, but becomes more nougat-like. Sweet entry, Light to medium bodied with good concentration. Flavours of peanut laced nougat fill the mouth, though the raspberry jelly seems to be lost. Finishes dry to balance. Good persistence with a subtle nutty, raspberry aftertaste. Quirky but utterly convincing. 35% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Made from the finest Indonesian vanilla beans. Crystal clear appearance. Perfumed scents of creamy vanilla delivered with superb definition and purity. With aeration, traces of grated coconut and milk chocolate emerge. A light, silky entry follows through to a plush, svelte-textured, vanilla bean infused palate with excellent concentration. The mid palate sweetness is relieved by a medium dry finish following into a lengthy aftertaste that’s superbly clean, sufficiently dry, with hints of vanilla and dried coconut persisting. Tasting note: Bright crimson / deep pink appearance. Opening aroma reveals pomegranate jam / cranberry juice scents with cough lolly undertones. A soft silky delivery includes cordial like flavours that are more in the berry - jube spectrum with subtle pomegranate undertones. Overall too sweet and a little out of balance. We've heard some batches are better than others. This one fails to harness the natural acidity of the fruit. 35% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews...The bouquet smells of genuine pomegranate, is slightly berry-like and acutely brambly; aeration maintains the strength of the ripe, but not overly ripe, pomegranate. The palate entry is crisp, refreshing and true to the fruit; the midpalate offers succulent tastes of pomegranate beads plus a distant citrus note.

Wisniówa Cherry Flavoured Vodka (700ml)POLAND$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 40%Specialty flavoured vodkas have become increasingly fashionable over the last decade, despite the fact that in most parts of Europe the tradition of flavouring vodkas has been practised for centuries.
This delicious cherry vodka successfully preserves the fresh cherry fruit, the natural aroma, taste and colour of the cherry. Semi-sweet, it is best consumed neat, or as a cocktail ingredient and is also used as a dessert ingredient. (Traditionally such vodkas are drunk with dessert in Poland, and it's very easy to see why). For those who are partial to cherry brandies and similar drinks, Wisniówa Cherry Vodka will also be appreciated.
Tasting notes: Deep burnished copper colour. Semi sweet bouquet of cherry glace and marzipan is a little shy. Soft, viscous entry. Cherry glace and marzipan repeat at mid palate. Very gently warming spirit backbone adds depth. Creamy texture. Finishes slightly drier with a subtle cherry ripe confectionary fade. 40%Alc./Vol.

Wodka Gorzka Orzechowa Walnut Flavoured Vodka (500ml)Bielsko-Biala, POLAND$42. 99Bottle$515.88 DozenABV: 36%Pours a deep burnt sienna brown. The aroma takes a good half minute to intensify towards a moderate ranking. Smells convincingly of walnut, but lacks freshness and intensity. Some mild bitter chocolate / herbal notes later emerge and pretty much swamp the primary note. A light entry leads into a medium weight palate offering bitter herbal digestif notes - moreso than walnut. Soft creamy mouth feel. Aftertaste is dry with the mild herb / chocolate bitterness lingering. Weird yet fascinating at the same time. 36% Alc./Vol.
