2017 Pierre Peters Les Montjolys Cuvee Speciale Blanc de Blancs ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$430. 00Bottle$5160.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkPierre Peters is a benchmark grower Champagne based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, founded in 1929 by Camille Peters and today run by Rodolphe Peters, farming around 20 hectares of predominantly Chardonnay across Le Mesnil (the core), with additional holdings in Oger, Avize and Cramant, including the famed Les Chetillons parcel acquired in 1930. Viticulture is meticulous, with replanting based on the estate's own massal selections, while vinification is largely in stainless steel (reserve wines held in a mix of steel, large oak and concrete) with partial malolactic fermentation and an emphasis on extended lees ageing to build texture and depth. The range moves from the non-vintage Blanc de Blancs Cuvee de Reserve and vintage L'Esprit through to the single-vineyard Le Mesnil bottlings Les Chetillons and Les Montjolys, and concludes with premium multi-vintage cuvees such as Reserve Oubliee (from a perpetual blend dating back to 1988) and L'Etonnant Monsieur Victor, with the house's hallmark being pure, chalk-driven Cote des Blancs Chardonnay built for serious ageing.

The 2017 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys, from a vineyard in the village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, where higher percentages of clay and an deeper topsoil render rounder wines, was disgorged in July 2024 with a dosage of four grams per liter. A year that was undeniably more favorable to Chardonnay than to red grapes, 2017 is defined by lower-than-average yields and delivered a concentration that Rodolphe Péters compares to 2019. Soaring from the glass with a bouquet of tangerine zest, red apple, spices and bread dough, it’s full-bodied and textural, capturing power without weight. Les Montjolys shares a similar signature with Les Chétillons; but they are certainly no twin brothers, as Les Montjolys is a slightly richer, more demonstrative and less electric wine. It’s a charming rendition that will offer a broad drinking window. It’s worth keeping Les Montjolys more easily accessible, as these bottles can be enjoyed in their full expression earlier than Les Chétillons of the same vintage. Drink 2024-2040.

Kristaps Karklins - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2017 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys is a wild, exotic wine. Apricot, tangerine peel, gingerbread, dried flowers and strong tropical inflections give the 2017 its distinct personality. Soft contours lend notable immediacy. This is an especially open-knit vintage for Les Montjolys. It's a commendable effort for a year marked by late-season rain followed by heat, unfortunately ideal conditions for botrytis. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: July 2024. Drink 2025-2032.

The 2013 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is outrageously beautiful. I remember tasting it as vin clair in March, 2014. Today, as a finished Champagne from bottle, the 2013 captures all of the intense ripeness and bright acidity that make this vintage so exceptional. A wine of cut and brilliance, the 2013 will thrill readers who enjoy Blanc de Blancs. Citrus, marzipan, slate, crushed rocks and floral notes pulse with tremendous energy. Readers will have to be patient with the 2013. It is a total knock-out. Wow! Dosage is 3.5-4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: April, 2020.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThe 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is almost painfully tightly wound today, but what rewards it will offer for the patient! Unfurling in the glass with scents of citrus oil, toasted almonds, buttery pastry, freshly baked bread and crisp yellow apple, it's full-bodied, layered and incisive, with superb concentration and a taut, chiseled profile. Long and penetrating, it concludes with an intensely saline finish. This 2013 vintage, the region's last October harvest, increasingly seems like a vintage that harks back to a past era, and any readers who appreciate classically balanced Champagnes that blossom after two decades' bottle age will want to consider laying down some of this beautiful Les Chétillons. Drink 2026-2055.

As good as the Chétillons is in 2013, the 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys is even better. In fact, it is the single most impressive Champagne I have ever tasted from Rodolphe Péters. Deep, rich and pliant, the 2013 possesses tremendous depth to play off the searing, bright acids of this late ripening harvest. Light tropical accents add gorgeous nuance to a core of apricot, marzipan and lemon confit. Next to the Chétillons, the Montjolys is richer and creamier. It will be a matter of personal preference as to which wine readers prefer. The Chétillons is taut and focused, while the Montjolys is broader and more vinous. In two separate tastings, I slightly preferred the Montjolys. Both are moving, profound Champagnes. Dosage is 3.5-4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: March, 2020.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThe 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys is lovely, unwinding in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, walnuts, green apple, crisp stone fruit and fresh bread. Full-bodied, layered and structured, it's more gourmand and less austere than Les Chétillons but is still a taut, chiseled and notably structural wine that will really repay extended bottle age. As readers will remember, Les Montjolys is a lieu-dit that sits in a small depression where the soils are richer in clay than those of Les Chétillons. Drink 2025-2045.

The NV Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut is entirely from the 2014 vintage and was sourced in four parcels of the Côte des Blancs. Opening with potted ginger and white flowers on the clear, fresh, precise and chalky nose, this is a pure, fresh, elegant, beautifully dry and chalky grand cru with an expressive, stimulating iodine-inflected finish that reveals a persistent structure and freshness. This is a damned serious and chalky Blanc de Blancs that was disgorged in January 2018 with just two grams of dosage. Tasted at the domaine in April 2018.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parkers Wine Advocate (September 2018)The 2014 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs is another fine example of the vintage. Creamy and open-knit, with soft contours, the 2014 offers plenty of near to medium-term appeal. The lemon confit, almond and dried flower notes are finely knit. The Blanc de Blancs is the first release of the same wine that will be sold as L’Esprit with higher dosage next year for the US and other countries. The Blanc de Blancs is mostly destined to Scandinavian markets and is the only wine in the Péters range that is sold as an Extra-Brut. Disgorged December 2017. Dosage is 2 grams per liter.

Disgorged in March 2024 with four grams per liter dosage, based on the 2018 vintage (50%) and complemented by a perpetual reserve component that dates back to 1988, the NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Réserve Oubliée goes through partial malolactic fermentation (as the rest of Péters wines) and is matured for about 18 months in a variety of vessels: large wooden casks, stainless steel tanks and concrete (roughly one-third each) before aging under cork in the bottle. Péters observes, and the wine confirms, that long aging on the lees contributes to an aromatic range of complexity that evokes associations of maturation in barrels. Opening in the glass to reveal notes of baked bread, toasted nuts, vanilla pod and dried fruit, it is harmonious and enveloping, laden with vibrant acidity and marked by lip-puckering salinity. It’s a perfect blanc de blancs for enjoying now, while laying down Les Chétillons in the cellar. Drink 2024-2035.

Kristaps Karklins - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Dec 2024)The NV Brut Réserve Oubliée (base 2017) currently shows a bit more freshness and verve than the 2016 base tasted alongside it, which could be a reflection of the base vintages and/or disgorgement dates. In any event, I would prefer to cellar this for at least a year. Bright citrus, white flowers, crushed rocks and bright saline notes confer energy. The 2017 is a wine for readers who enjoy tense Champagnes. I especially admire how the wine opens with time in the glass. It's a beguiling Champagne to be sure. As a reminder, the Réserve Oubliée is a selection of Cuvée de Réserve that spends an extra year on its lees and is aged on cork. Disgorged: October 2022. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Drink 2023-2031.

Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.com (July 2025)The NV Champagne Grand Cru Blanc De Blancs Reserve Oubliée Brut is based around the 2016 vintage in this release. A bright straw/silver color, it opens to a floral and fruity bouquet of white peach, jasmine, lime candies, chalky earth, and frangipane. This cuvée is predominantly raised in stainless steel, but the reserve wine is brought up in a combination of stainless steel, concrete tanks, and Stockinger barrels, adding a bit more depth that’s felt in the resulting wine. Medium to full-bodied, it takes on the concentration and texture of silky citrus oils, a refined mousse, and a rounded and elegant feel through the finish. It’s hard to resist now but it will reward those who wait. Drink 2026-2040.

Once the lacy white mousse dissipates it reveals a pale straw coloured base that has shades of gold to the edges. The bead is fine and profuse. Refined yeast lees, citrus and baked bread aromas are followed by light notions of oyster shell and cashew. Possessing good richness and fine airy feel, there’s a faint creaminess to the oily bread, yeast lees and citrus flavours which are backed by a subtle toastiness and some brioche. Finishes dry and finely textured with stimulating acidity and a long savoury aftertaste.

Risky Business has been sourcing prosecco from the King Valley for nearly 10 years. There's an enviable consistency to style. It's seen here from the bright, just-cut green apple and citrus summery scents through to the utterly delicious lemon sorbet crunch and bubbly zing on the palate. And dry ... prosecco looks so good when it's dry and clean-cut.

A pioneer in the champagne trade, the Ruinart House has stood out due to its unique know-how and history. Made in the pure Ruinart tradition exclusively from the Chardonnay grape, Ruinart Blanc de Blancs reflects perfect harmony. Its striking luminosity is further enhanced by the clear glass bottle, a replica from an 18th Century model.

Occupying a stylistic middle ground between the incisiveness of the 2013 and the fleshier textures of the 2012, Taittinger’s 2014 Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne—disgorged in July 2024 with a dosage of nine grams per liter—has turned out beautifully. It offers aromas of orange peel, peach, pear and brioche mingled with hazelnut and burnt buttered toast. On the palate, it is full-bodied, ample and textural, with a layered yet crisp core of fruit, considerable tension and a long, chalky finish. Harmonious and racy-fresh though it is, this is a marginally richer rendition than the 2013 tasted alongside it, yet both promise excellent longevity and will make for fascinating comparative tastings in the years to come. Drink 2026-2054.

Kristaps Karklins - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2014 Comtes de Champagne is pristine. In this tasting, it comes across as a mini-2008, similar in its linear personality, with just a touch more mid-palate creaminess. Readers will find a Comtes that plays in the realm of tension and energy. Citrus confit, white flowers, chalk, mint and chamomile are all finely sketched. Light tropical overtones grace the finish. What an absolute delight. The 2014 can be enjoyed now or cellared. Dosage is 9 grams per liter. Drink 2026-2044.

Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.comTaittinger's Comtes de Champagne shines in 2014. It's a vintage that offered crisp yet open and beautifully defined wines from the grand cru Chardonnays of the Côte des Blancs. This is still primary and youthful, its zesty roasted grapefruit, sweet clementine and pineapple flavours meet juicy white peach and gentle ageing flavours of demerara sugar and toasted brioche. It's a little less intense and dynamic than 2013 but equally fine in its restrained, racy energy. With even a short time on cork the classic toasty Comtes richness will start to emerge. French Champagne is not an everyday luxury for many. Thankfully, over the past few decades the production of Sparkling Wine in Australia has made a quantum leap, and to be fair, much of the increased quality is because of the presence of French know-how. The most prestigious and expensive technique for Sparkling wine production has become known as 'Methode Champenoise' (fermentation in the bottle). As we have all learnt to our joy, sparkling wines produced by Methode Champenoise, as opposed to other techniques, invariably result in a superior drink. But it is a very difficult wine to make - costly, time consuming, even risky.
The two key grape varieties employed are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, though warmer regions may favour others. Chardonnay gives life, acid, freshness and aging potential to methode champenoise, though care must be taken to avoid excess maturity, particularly in warmer climates, which can produce a dominant, aggressively varietal character. Warm climate Chardonnay cuvees may suffer from a narrow flavour profile, high "melony" aroma notes and lack of freshness, liveliness and length. Additionally, rich fertile soils can cause this variety to produce foliage and grassy aromas. When combined with Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay has a greater capacity to age harmoniously and for a longer time. Pinot Noir adds depth, complexity, backbone, strength, and fullness (what the French call "carpentry") to methode champenoise wines but is seldom used by itself, even in Blanc de Noirs.
